Suzumori Yukina's status board
I'm getting around to learning the language, but I keep getting sidetracked. This is present in the game Toki no Kizuna, which is the prequel of Hakuouki in the terms of the demon clans. The titular ten demon clans, Jukkishuu, have this as their insignia - as present in their clothing, banners, and in Suzumori Yukina's status board(?). Does anyone know the significance and symbolism in the culture of this flora?
Other than that, I'm wondering what happened to the council during Edo Era as it seems that after the formation of the group, it eventually sundered? Based on what I've understood when I went into the game blindly, the clans seems to be relatively close then - especially that of Yukimura, Kazama, and Amagiri , they essentially view Amagiri Kazutake as their aniki. Of the central clan, Yase Clan, the clans revered it as a powerful figure considering they do have prophetic visions and ties to the imperial family. For families with such close relationship, its pretty tragic that they ended up separating due to the effects of the Battle of Sekigahara.
In the game, there were also other clans such as the Tsukishima, Shiomi, Kotoura, and Hatsushimo which were part of the council. The clans Nagumo and Oboro were long ostracized by the council due to their affront centuries earlier and thus were considered as a solitary oni. What does this signify when Amagiri Kyujuu decides that if Kazama Chikage were to go to Ezo, he'd be considered as such? Are his actions so grave that he would be relegated to be alike to the families that his ancestors once fought?
In the Chuugoku Region(which would be considered as Choshuu Domain) where the Shiranui Clan resides, they revered them as deities - pretty ironic, though Shiranui Shin does look very pretty to be stated otherwise. There are many more of others that I can mention, but I'll do it on another day.
There's tons of information that can be extracted in TnK for the supernatural side of Hakuouki, it would be good discussion on Chizuru's family. :3

D-Frag! : Near Limitless Fun
Tumblr media
Yes, this is an old series. Yes, it can be hard to find physically because of that. And yes, it is fun as all hell. I recently managed to get my hands on all but 3 volumes of the series so I've done a re-read from scratch on it, and it really is just incredibly hilarious. It can be a little formulaic with the whole straight man routine, but it gets both incredibly meta and off the rails with it. I mean, the sheer amount of jokes that they break out in relation to it always keeps it fresh. Getting tired of Kazama making comebacks? There's probably a joke or a remix on the horizon for it. And personally speaking it always gets me, whether it's one volume in or 16 volumes in.
Anyways, let me backtrack a little. What is D-Frag! ? Well. Well.... It's a high school comedy taken the max of what can be weird, with lots of other little bits mixed in. Kazama is a young delinquent who comes to Fujou high believing he'll be able to take it over and make a name for himself. Too bad he gets suckered in by the curious ongoings of a video game club and gets tortured into joining them. From there, his high school career of insanity and infamy as the king of comebacks (and second fiddle to the most fearsome people around) begins as they galivant and explore and in general cause mayhem and headaches.
Oh yeah, and there's 17 volumes and it's still not been a full year in real time in D-Frag! Yeah, that's right, this thing is stretched out, but you don't even think about it. One could only imagine how experiencing all of these moments one after the next would affect a young high schooler. Moving on, some art to break up my monotonous explanations of what D-Frag! is!
Tumblr media
I don't think words could really explain what's so appealing to this manga. It's got such a classic feel to it and is so incredibly true to itself. No matter what trope it brings up, it'll subvert expectations and find a way to turn it silly and diffuse any and all tension. It builds things up and up and up, and just as it's about to place the final piece on top to complete it, Tomoya Haruno (the author) comes swooping in to topple it in the most satisfying way possible.
Not to mention, it's running jokes are absolutely top notch. There's definitely some that are rather cliched, but also more than a few that are fresh and enjoyable within the overall approach of the series. Like the constant jokes about the envy and fear that Takao's (one of the characters) chest instills in fellow women and girls.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
It's really hard to talk about how D-Frag! is so much fun and such a great read without spoiling because I could talk on end about how refreshing, unique, and interesting redacted was. Or how the entire redacted arc was a wild card that was incredibly fun. Maybe this. Parents exist in D-Frag!, they really do. We see both Kazama's mother and father, we see Roka's mother, Takao's mother, Chitose's older sister, and a handful of others. Oh yeah, and just for effect, Sean Connery is a teacher at Fujou High.
And who totally could would forget the unique side characters of D-Frag! ? There's , and there there's , and of course you can't forget about . Jokes aside, the side characters have a real thing for being bald and weird in general and I'm all for it. It's so out of left field and random that it feels like two series collided to form this single one.
Tumblr media
I swear, at least one chapter every volume has these ridiculous battle shounen introductions and interactions, and no matter what they get me every time. And they're so detailed? Haruno sensei absolutely put a good amount of effort into designing them and adding random throwaway details just to make them seem more absurd.
I don't know, I fully admit that D-Frag! isn't some foundational, groundbreaking series that has incredibly well timed or apt and effective humor, nor is it something super relatable or anything that really stands out by critical metrics. But to me, it's just plain dumb fun. One stupid thing after the next, one ridiculous escapade followed by another, guided by Haruno sensei's incredibly odd sense of interest and direction. It's something I don't know I'll ever grow tired of because Haruno sensei has stumbled upon a golden formula for D-Frag!. We're going to hit 15 years of publication this year, so here's to many more. (Also, check out the anime, it's loads of fun for what it adapts from the manga).

infinite wealth chapter 7 directly post-kiryu stuff talk
yeah none of the haruka stuff really. hits for me. at all. maybe it would have two games ago but the way they wrote (and fridged) her in six and then proceeded to completely ignore her until now, even in gaiden (other than the looming We’re Gonna Blow Up Da Orphanage threat) where they totally had a chance to acknowledge all that stuff……. rgg’s failure to write women hits again!! it’s so fucking funny she’s not even in the Baka Mitai 2 “I Lament That I Can’t Tell My Loved Ones I Love Them” Slideshow. because that spot is reserved for all the men in kiryu’s life and also the dog. haruka ceased being a character and simply became a driving force for kiryu and now i don’t care anymore 😔
i appreciate that they’re allowing kiryu to have character development even now; i was disappointed in gaiden’s refusal to allow kiryu to acknowledge kazama as like, Sucking. A Lot. but i can at least accept and respect that they let him realize he can rely on others for once
also so mad that they gave us nanba for two seconds and then took him away from us again
EDIT: also also it’s soooo so so funny to me that kiryus like Tch… asking for help from people younger than me. What have I become……. when said people are like majority middle aged men. and chitose

Not my review for Kazutake’s route, but a Kazama Chitose preview... [Note: MINOR spoilers--this takes place early in all routes.] [Note: Abbreviated view in captions if you want to skip my comments below!]
So in Yukina’s first meeting with Chitose (Kazama/Heisuke??) he proves to her that she’s not as strong as she thinks (i.e., he’s a lot better--which he is, although she’s not too bad) and he mocks her.  For which he and his silent quasi-partner, Kasuya (Saitou), get whacked by Kazutake (because (a) it’s not helpful and (b) she’s a girl--thank you, Harada-er-Kazutake).
This scene (above) takes place shortly after.  Chitose is disgusted that Yukina totally lacks femininity, so one of the Elders insists that she prove her “feminine” skills to Chitose by mending his frayed sleeve.  Both he and she are dubious, but the Elder insists that she can do it, so she tries.
Yukina has never learned to sew.  The Princess has always done all her sewing.  She doesn’t even know how to thread a needle. (Really??)  But golly gosh darn it she tries anyway!!  She eventually manages to thread the needle, pokes the unfortunate (but in my view deserving) Chitose a couple of times, and MENDS THAT SLEEVE.  Woo-hoo!
Yukina and Chitose both stare at the not-surprisingly terrible sewing (darning?) job.  Yukina immediately wants to try again.  Chitose says no; his first comment is very funny (IMO). Anyway, he starts out well by saying that whatever else it may be, he can tell that she genuinely tried her best.  Then he slides back into traditional samurai / Kazama mode in the last few panels.
Hope you enjoy!

So Chitose! I am sorry to ask if this is a sensitive topic but curiosity won't allow it to slide until I ask. What was going through your mind during that time when you were still with Rei and, well, not exactly yourself? What made you decide that it was better to leave without telling Rei anything? I get it's for his safety yes but why did you think it was best to leave without saying anything? Yes, Rei came out okay, but in his current state of mind at the time it could have gone differently.
His expression quickly turned into a doleful one, looking at the floor. “I...I’m sorry, I’m not sure if I can explain myself clearly...” He was silent for a little while, contemplating if he should say more, then he looked up at the anon. “I can’t forgive myself for what I’ve done to him. I hurt him... I had to leave.”

Yeah. Kyo & Chikage is grounded. Just confirming it. And guess what I wasn't alone either...
