"A guy like George Carlin couldn't be a comedian today." Really? Because a lot of less funny people have recently said much worse things in their stand-up and have had it put on Netflix. They've won awards for it. Cancel culture isn't real; get a hobby.

I'm going to say the most Carlin-esque iconoclastic thing I can think of: fuck George Carlin. Our behavior as a society is not bound by one stand-up comedian. He sure as fuck wouldn't have wanted it to be.

People say he was right-wing, say he was left-wing. He had a lot of reactionary opinions and a lot of radical ones. They weren't all good. Some of them, like everyone's opinions, stunk. And many of them probably weren't even his opinions; he was just doing them for laughs. I'm sorry you've based your whole life on his stand-up, but it's time to move on and explore the world a little more. And judge for yourself which of his jokes hold up, and which are regrettable and have harmed society (but still might be funny as jokes).

Use your own brain. Stop worshiping comedians from different times as if they weren't products of their time the same way today's comedians are. America's past was even more cruel than its present, and we're allowed to move on from that.
