A perfect formal attire having soft 80’s combed cotton, the intricate jacquard thread borders, with unique tie and design in the borders and pall. Moreover, the coarse and rustic 60’s cottons makes them a comfortable wear and also provides a good drape. The Paramakudi sarees are woven by a community known as the Saurashtrians who migrated to the region of Tamil Nadu about 900 years ago. The Puthinam variation has a contemporary touch which gives it a new and modern touch, making it a saree for everyone. These sarees have been given the ‘Handloom mark’ that was launched as a government initiative in 2006 to offer a guarantee to the consumers that the product they are purchasing is a genuine hand woven product and not something out of a power loom or mill. This also provides an exclusive identity to the Paramakudi saree and contributes to their significance not only in India but also abroad. This scheme is being implemented by the Textile Committee, Ministry of Textiles, Government of India. The Road to Menofiya
Menoufia governorate, located north of Cairo on the Nile Delta, is the city of great exceptionality. In Egypt “Being from Menoufia puts you on the way to fame,” is a well-known saying and proudly known among the Egyptians as the city is famous for giving birth to hundreds of important people that have occupied high ranking positions in different fields, including presidency. Perhaps not many people are aware of the fact that Maria al-Qibtiyya, wife of Prophet Mohamed and mother of his son Ibrahim, was from Menoufia. Menoufia’s name was derived from the hieroglyphic word “Nafr”, which means “The Good Land”. It was the birthplace of four Egyptian presidents, Mohammad Anwar el-Sadat, Hosni Mubarak, Adly Mansour and the present incumbent President Abdel Fatah al-Sisi.
Recently I had the honour of visiting Menofiya as a part of my work for opening Know India Corner in the Menofiya University. Its amazing how much similarity this town has from my hometown Bulandsehr and for once if we ignore the date trees it will look the same as my hometown. The vast agricultural fields and  people working in them, tube wells, vehicles carrying fruits and vegetables and the narrow roads, the variety of birds and animals ( though they use Donkey more than us, specially in agriculture). While my driver informed that it has agricultural roads instead of the desert roads (PS : Desert roads are considered better roads in Egypt), I instantly got reminded of PM Gramin Sadak Yojna which has benefitted thousands of villages in India by linking them with other important roads.
Anyways out of this nostalgia, we reached Menofiya University in 1.5 hrs from the ever bustling Cairo. The Menofia University (MU) was founded in 1976. It started with four faculties with nearly 9500 students, 214 staff members and 372 assisting members. It has steadily and remarkably developed to be one of the largest universities in Egypt. Today the University includes 22 faculties & institutes with about 80000 students and  3500 teaching  staff members. Professor Dr. Sayed, who teaches Modern history in the university was waiting to receive me at the Gate. Prof Sayed did his M. Phil from JNU and his visiting card has the logo on JNU on it which was very comforting. He is a great admirer of India which shows in his talks. I met the Dean of the Library and many of his colleagues. He offered me Suleimani tea, it’s basically a tea without milk and which really made the conversation interesting. We discussed the reforms being carried out by the present regime in Egypt.  While India has been the foremost in investing in Human resources in different parts of the world, our small projects are the ones which touch hearts of people. From building Parliaments, Libraries, roads for better connectivity, airports, railways stations, dams, power projects, Scholarships to study in premier institutes of India and a host lot of things, we have been transforming lives across the world.  Here in Egypt too, apart from many other initiatives we have opened state of art IT center in Al-Azhar University.
The “Know India Corner” once open, will bring the student of Menofia Univeristy more closer to my country. Its like opening the doors of India to them and that’s why it is a wonderful initiative, though they know of India through Bollywood and the daily sops.
This is what the Indian Foreign Service gives you, an amazing opportunity to interact with the amazing people of the world, to know their views and one learns from all these interactions.

From Earth Science Picture of the Day; April 30, 2018:
Kerala, India Photographer: P. R. S. Roopaushree; Summary Authors: P. R. S. Roopaushree, Jim Foster
Road trips can be a feast for the eyes. A few years back I took an excursion to southwest India, the lush tropical land of Kerala state. The vast green fields of rice found here, near the village of Kollengode in the Palakkad district, with the cloud-kissed Western Ghats mountains as a backdrop (rising to nearly 9,000 ft or 2,743 m) will be etched in my memory for some time.
Kerla has a wet climate. Most of the monsoon rains (southwest summer monsoon) that fall here occur between early June and late August, but late September through December is generally wet as well. In addition to rice, tea, coffee, pepper and cocoanuts are important agricultural products. Photo taken on November 11, 2015.

New Post: Beautified by Beetles ~ Every time Nalini comes out of the museum, her fascinated head spews out an animated talk about clothing and textiles from the eras just visited, putting an emphasis on how the embellishments used on them gleamed of a grandeur only accessible to us in fairy tales now… and the fact that during those time these embellishments were sourced directly from nature instead of being made artificially like today. Things like precious pearls and gems, pure gold and silver wires, ivory and rare animal fur, feathers and shiny beetle wings were used. In the making of the Jama especially, the gota patti work incorporated a unique kind of sequin made from Elytron or the fore-wing of the Jewel-Beetle that belongs to Buprestidae family. ~ Read more ~ https://gaatha.com/jewel-beetle-work-royal-dress ~ #historyofindia #blogs #craftstories #craftsofindia #storytelling #gaatha #knowindia #indianheritage #loveindia #embroideryart #royalstyle #royaltextile #textileart #beetle https://www.instagram.com/p/CY_4bdSoWIY/?utm_medium=tumblr

Dotted with a thousand tiny specks, possessing a fine crinkled texture an dyed in rich vibrant colours, 'Bandhani' or 'tie and dye' of Gujarat draws immense admiration and attention alike. The craft takes its name from 'Bandhan', the Sanskrit word for 'tying' and  refers to both the technique as well as the end product. The earliest written reference to Bandhini is in Bana's 'Harshacharita' or the 'Life of King Harsha', where he describes with beautiful detail, the tie dye work done on special "Odhani" (Head Cover). The earliest use has also been evidenced in wall paintings of the Ajanta caves as well as Jain Manuscripts- with illustrations depicting dot-patterned garments. https://gaatha.org/Craft-of-India/research-kutch-bandhani-textile/ #bandhani #tiedye #storytelling #history #craftstories #handmadelove #gaatha #womenempowerment #workfromhome #loveindia #handmadeculture #craftmanship #knowindia https://www.instagram.com/p/CVNHTp6II4j/?utm_medium=tumblr

Pichwais are religious cloth paintings that are hung behind the idols in the shrines of Lord Shrinathji at Nathdwara and other temples of Pushti Marga sect. The word Pichwai means ‘hanging at the back’ and is derived from the Sanskrit words ‘Pich’ which means back and ‘Wai’ means hanging.  The idol of Shreenathji in the Nathdwara temple, is of a seven-year-old Krishna who is holding the Govardhana using one of his hands with the other hand on his waist. So, the idol is also treated as a child. Everything that happens inside the temple is done with keeping him in mind, like the puja is done in such a way that when the oil lamp is lit, the flame from the wick don’t burn the eyes of the idol. Also the people visiting the temple cover their faces, so that if they cough or sneeze the viruses don’t reach the idol of the lord. It’s similar to how a mother would take care of her child. All these things are depicted in the Pichwai paintings, which makes it of utmost significance to everyone who wants to learn about Shreenathji as well as to the people of Vallabha Sampradaya as these paintings are in a way documentation of their traditions. The first paper industry developed in Kashmir was established by Sultan Zain-ul-Abedin in 1417-67 AD after he returned from detention in Samarkand. He brought along artisans of various skills to develop crafts and introduce new trades in India. And soon, because of its quality, the Kashmiri paper or Khosur kagaz was much in demand in the world and the rest of the country for writing manuscripts. This brings to the mystery of why the art of painted papier-mâché in Kashmir was originally confined to making Kalamdan or the pen-case only and got to be known as Kari-Kalamdani. Due to the rapid growth of paper industry during this time, the demand for pens along with bookbinding and craft of making decorative book jackets in papier-mâché also flourished. ~ Read more --------------- Short story ~ https://gaatha.com/kari-kalamdani-papier-mache-painting-kashmir Research ~ https://gaatha.org/Craft-of-India/documentation-papiermache-art-kashmir --------------- Images by Sandeep Sangaru #papercrafts #papermache #kashmir #craftsmanship #storytime #history #lovehandmade #loveindia #gaatha #craftstories #knowindia #knowledge #handicrafts #srinagar https://www.instagram.com/p/CT47a4eILjw/?utm_medium=tumblr
