DOUG STEALS KONG'S LUNCH LOL. He's even so smug about it when Kong relents and lets him have it.

Mothra is so much fluffier this time around! Love how when she breaks up Godzilla and Kong's fight she's almost SCOLDING Goji lol. "Goji! Stop bullying the poor monkey!" "S..sorry, dear..." Jia seems to be her main priestess now tho? Whatever happened to the twin scientists from KOTM? I hope they aren't entirely forgotten and replaced. Maybe they can return as Jia's guides.

Shimo is adorable. I'm glad she got a happy ending and some neck scratches from Kong. Big huggable lizard-horse-kitty.

Suko saves the day by retrieving Kong's axe? Huh. That lil kid pulled his weight a lot more than I'd expected to. Also love his mean streak at the start, he and Kong bickered a lot at first.

And of course, Skar King's very very karmic and brutal demise. I can only imagine the state of him (and Rio de Janeiro's streets) when those ice chunks finally thaw out. Good luck with the cleanup, Monarch.

I think Mothra suddenly becoming an Iwi protector is because supposedly there was going to be another Original MonsterVerse Monster called Phosphora or some-such, but it wasn't well received by test audiences or something so it got reworked into Mothra. I could be misremembering, but that's what I remember hearing. Which is funny, because if memory serves correctly the KOTM end credits hinted at Mothra having already laid an egg before the Boston battle, so... retcon?

I'm really glad Shimo survived the movie, I felt so bad for her being under Skar King's pain control and how she visibly resists him throughout. Even her roars sounded pained. It was really sweet seeing the look in her eyes when the surface world sky is being cleared up, like if she's the source of the last Ice Age then it's been literally thousands upon thousands of years since she's last seen a sky like ours. Hoping we see her again in another movie!

Holy shit, Suko's introduction scene got SO MUCH FUNNIER when he goes from "i'm baby" to biting Kong's finger to being used as a BLUDGEONING WEAPON BY KONG. Suko really chugged that character development juice.

I feel vindicated for not once underestimating Skar King, because he is the most vile MonsterVerse... uh, monster villain we've gotten so far. Ghidorah was a sadistic son of a bitch and Mechagodzilla was a crazy Titan Terminator On Blue Rock Steroids, but Skar King has the heads of fellow Kongs stuck on pikes (presumably to set an example for anyone looking to challenge him), when he mocks Kong's new tooth most of the apes and especially Suko seem to laugh along out of fear, he straight up KICKS an ape into lava, and has actual sex slaves holding babies in his throne room, and you just KNOW they don't consent to what he does to them. On top of him controlling Shimo with pain and his attempts on Suko's life - and considering the number of red/orange-furred babies in the throne room, we can surmise that Suko is one of his own children - Skar King may not have the spectacle or scale Ghidorah had, but my god did it feel good seeing him go down.

So on Serenes Forest there’s some interesting speculation/info about the plot of the Fell Xenologue, big spoilers:

“Potential spoiler. The Revanche axe has a variant for Fell Xenologue 5. Usually, weapon variants only belong to enemies. Plus among the leaked DLC characters, Nil is not listed as playable; instead, there’s a separate prince character called Rafale. Alternatively, Rafale could be Nil’s real name?”

Rafale’s datamined bond conversation with Edelgard mentions wanting to atone.

“Update 2: The Hong Kong version of the trailer briefly shows the map before the Fogado versus Fogado battle. If you stare/zoom in, you may notice something very suspicious.

There’s an axe wielder synced with Dark Chrom, with 2 revival stones. From their appearance, it looks like Nil. This would also fit in with his Revanche axe having a Fell Xenologue 5 variant.

Additionally, one of the Corrupted foes is a Mage Cannoneer. So I imagine you’ll also encounter Enchanter foes, similar to the Divine Paralogues.

The final map, Fell Xenologue 6, I don’t think was shown. This is when you fight the wielders of all 7 Bracelets.

There also seems to be some kind of instant-death map gimmick at play. Where certain zones become highlighted, perhaps to collapse. There’s also some kind of vortex. Plus a beam attack. Sounds a bit like the final chapter, gone crazy!

Major spoilers: I suspect Nil will be the final boss. They seem to have animations for an upgraded class that shares animations with Sombron’s Great Fell Dragon.

Major spoilers, continued: Oh, it absolutely is Nil. In the base game, there are animation calls for multiple special attacks (similar to Sombron’s) during Fell Xenologue 6, with “Il” in the name. At the time, I didn’t know what it meant; my best guess was “Illusion”. But instead it’s referring to Nil.

To finish off, according to the data-mine, Zelestia, Madeline and Gregory should be playable in the main game. They also have S supports.

Fun fact. There is a currently unused function in the base game for calling additional battle conversations for Zephia, Marni and Griss. Presumably when you fight them with Zelestia, Madeline and Gregory. This function is called during every encounter with one of them. I’m unsure how many unique conversations there are though (like maybe you only get a conversation the first time for each?).

We already know Nel is playable, which leaves Nil. I find it strange how they confirmed Nel, but not Nil, plus there’s his Fell Xenologue 5 enemy appearance and possible identity as the final boss, so I have a feeling he’ll be non-playable.

There’s also the question of who Rafale is. According to the dining quotes, Rafale is a prince, just like Nel is a princess. Hmm, could he be this world’s version of Veyle?”

what's the kowloon manifesto take on where to put airports in cities?

Well the obvious answer would be Kai Tek Airport of Hong Kong:

Because of the geography of the area positioning the airport with water on three sides of the runway, with Kowloon City's residential apartment complexes and 2000+ft mountains to the north-east of the airport, aircraft could not fly over the mountains and quickly drop in for a final. Instead, aircraft had to fly above Victoria Harbour and Kowloon City, passing north of Mong Kok's Bishop Hill. After passing Bishop Hill, pilots would see Checkerboard Hill with a large red and white checkerboard pattern. Once the pattern was sighted and identified, aircraft made a low-altitude (sub-600 ft) 47° right-hand turn, ending with a short final and touchdown. For pilots, this airport was technically demanding, as the approach could not be flown by aircraft instruments, but had to be flown visually because of the right-hand turn required

The increased crash rates are absolutely worth it to ensure that no land capable of hosting a skyscraper goes undeveloped! Closing it in 1998 was a mistake.

But seriously I don't think here there is too much specialness to airports. I think the good answers are A: Land reclamation, and B: Combining mixed use w/ good urban transport connections. I think Changi airport in Singapore is the best the airport in the world along these axes. Reclaimed land - aka building land out into the ocean - is great because using reclaimed land for heavy, large skyscrapers and such is absolutely doable but pretty expensive, but for runways aka strips of pavement its much easier. So just take your city coastline and jut out a reclaimed land strip somewhere so you aren't eating up valuable real estate. Changi, like 40% of Singapore, is built this way.

And then just make sure it has in particular robust metro access (you should never have to go outside to get to the metro), honestly many airports that aren't in the US do this fine, Heathrow is a good example and literally anything in Japan does it. Narita for example has its "express" line that takes you right into Tokyo station in Ginza (to compensate for the fact that Narita was built way too far outside the city, which is a mistake and definitely a relic of its 70's construction time), which links right into the Tokyo Metro's expansive express "circle" lines so you can orient quickly to any region of the city:

Finally I will pivot back to Changi airport because what it does better than any other airport on earth is being a "mixed use" facility via its shopping and retail section, Jewel Changi:

A massive park-retail complex embedded in the airport, it is where passengers check their bags, etc, but also where regular people just go to hang out; about 40% of its daily visitors are not airport customers at all. The customer-facing aspects of an airport are in fact not special; its restaurants, hotels, shopping, etc. There is no reason to box them off, make them *only* used by airport customers; it renders part of your city inaccessible, makes restaurants go unused, etc. They should be integrated and Changi does that to a degree I don't think anywhere else does.

Not that Singapore is perfect or anything; while its urban density/land use is top tier, its public transport is only okay - buses are preferred over metro in Singapore, and the most common way to get the airport is by taxi. But flaws aside its a good model to look to.

New characters/character for my AU, Nick and Jet Jaguar.

Story is below

I wanted to add a character who would literally fight for the Titans and decided to turn two into one! I also redesigned Jet Jaguar to fit in better with the monster verse and the story of the character/armor. I hope y’all like his story below.

Nicks story:

Niko Tatopoulos or Nick as his friends call him starts off with the same team as he did in Godzilla the Series, code name “HEAT”. HEAT team is a separate Titan studying branch from Monarch with the intention of protecting and learning about the Titans.

A few years before the events of San Francisco in Godzilla 2014 there was another Cavern that was discovered besides the one containing Dagon’s remains and the Mutos. HEAT investigated this second cavern and came across the egg of Zilla Jr. along with the bones of two parent Zillas. When Zilla Jr. hatched he instantly imprinted on Nick just like in Godzilla the series and the two formed a bond. HEAT studied Zilla collecting information and data that they shared with Monarch in order to better learn the Titans.

Shortly after Godzilla 2014 Zilla Jr. disappeared without any trace, leaving HEAT very confused. In the years between this and KOTM Nick married Audrey Timmonds and they had a kid with another one on the way. Sadly a few months before the events of KOTM Nick and his family were at HEAT headquarters when Alan Jonah’s team raided the head quarters, leaving Nick badly wounded and his whole family dead along with valuable intel stolen.

Nick was mentally torn apart for many months and did not come back until the events of 2019/KOTM. After witnessing Mothras sacrifice it became clear to Nick that the Titans possessed more than just simple emotions and behaviors but, actually had the ability to think and make such decisions. Nick turned his focus towards proving this theory making it the only thing that could take his mind off of what happened only months before.

Nick had a obsession with his work and the Titans that grew to the point that his team became worried. Nick sold his home and now lives at HEAT headquarters where he works night and day and rarely sleeps. He began to develop this idea that the Titans and humanity needed to be protected from itself. When he was not working Nick exercised channeling his emotional trauma into the burning pain of his muscles as he pushed, pulled, lifted, and worked until exhaustion. Nicks team tried to approach him about this but, he refused their help saying there were more important matters than his own.

When the events of Godzilla versus Kong happened revealing Apex’s creation of MechaGodzilla, Nick started a new project which he named Jet Jaguar. Using alien tech from a Leviathan ship that crashed around the time Ghidora came to Earth, Nick was able to grow and shrink objects. Using this tech when he returned to the Cavern where the bones Zilla Jr.’s parents remained, he shrank down the front two largest dorsals of each. He then shrank the Gojira Dorsal off of the ax that Kong used in GvK and constructed a shield and a ax of his own.

With Zilla Dorsals being similar in composition to Gojira Dorsals, Nick could charge this ax just like Kong’s using it as a weapon that can cut right through metal or any enemy he may face. With the Gojira Dorsal shield Nick could now protect himself from weapons as strong as Godzillas Atomic breath, and collect the energy to use later to power his armor or his ax.

Nick then crafted the Armor out of a Titanium alloy allowing it to be lighter and more durable than something such as steel. The armor would possess the ability to grow and shrink, however trying to grow a living life form was a whole other set of issues. Nick had to do many tests in order to make it safe for him to grow and shrink, and with this came limits. Nick found that each size possesses different problems and his current range was very limited. At the current moment he can only grow a bit larger than a Juvenile ScullCrawler.

With the Jet Jaguar armor Nick has a goal, to destroy any threat to the Titans whether it be another organization like APEX, or the worlds militaries. Jet Jaguar would be there to defend the Titans. With the abilities this armor possesses Nick can now more easily study Godzilla, Mothra, and the other Titans collecting valuable data for HEAT team to show the government and collect funding.

When Nick started building the Jet Jaguar armor the rest of the HEAT team became very nervous. However when Nick started bringing promising results with Jet Jaguar, the team decided to continue supporting him and help him out. One of the members Randy, suggested that Jet Jaguar should be some sort of super hero, however Nick quickly shot this idea down saying that Jet Jaguars purpose is not fame, but solely to protect and study the Titans Nick did however allow Randy to design Jets paint job leaving it white with red, gold, and black.

Nick continued to tweak and fix the Jet Jaguar armor to be more mobile and fly. While working on the armor one day Mendel alerted Nick that HEAT team picked up Godzilla on the move, heading straight towards the hollow earth facility in Antartica. With this news Jet Jaguar was quickly in the air in pursuit of Godzilla and whatever it is that draws him so suddenly to this location. Until then, the most he can do is follow.

Alright, new Trailer dropped and there's a little more to talk about.

Mario's voice...is clearly not being fixed, so I'm gonna have to get over it. Hearing more of it, it's...acceptable. Not good, but it is what it is.

I love Donkey Kong's design though! His design has been translated so damn well for the movie! He looks amazing! Nothing to say on his voice, if he even talks and not just grunts and makes noises.

And look at this! A gladiator battle on top of a red gurder/ladder jungle gym set-up! It's an awesome set-up! It's kind of a shame we see Mario get his ass beat.

And I love Cranky Kong here. He's getting his due. Look at that swagger.

And now for the difinitive critique on Luigi's voice. It's...honestly exactly what everyone thought he'd sound like. Honestly, it's just Charlie Day being Charlie Day. It's exactly what my friend said he'd sound like, it's what YouTube thought he'd sound like; this isn't Luigi, it's Charlie Day.

And...it kinda works?

Like, maybe it's just the delivery, but Charlie Day's voice fits for Luigi better than Chris Pratt's voice does Mario. Maybe it's because as real people, Charlie's able to deliver a very funny voice. Luigi's in peril, but you I can't help but snicker a bit at the voice. It fits pretty well.

And now it's time for Peach, and...I'm gonna be honest, I'm kinda split.

Like the Mario Bros., it's just Anya Taylor-Joy is Anya Taylor-Joy, but the voice is perfectly fine. It's more on the side of Luigi than Mario, where the voice isn't what I'd want, but it's perfectly fine and fits the character. Then again, Peach, although has a recognizeable voice, I feel has a little more leeway than the two brothers.

And the part that makes me a little worried.

From what we see in the trailer, it seems like Peach is gonna be a super competent warrior princess. Which is fine, I didn't have a problem. In fact, I thought this was so damn cool! Seeing her kick up that axe and snatch it was so clean!

BUT, she doesn't feel like Peach. She's not the bubbly Princess we've always known who knows how to roll up her sleeves and get to business.

I'd say she's Strong Female Character #774, BUT her being competent and not the same as her game coutnerpart isn't enough for me to write her off. It just feels like Peach's traditionally fem traits are being written out for her character here.

And it's a shame, because Peach in the Nintendo Power Super Mario Adventures comic was a badass, but still felt like Peach.

Here's hoping I'm just being overly critical and that the movie is a good spin on the Mario Mythos, much like how the Sonic Movie(s) are a good spin(dash) on the Sonic Mythos.

One Piece Chapter 1081 Spoilers

The only people that can kill Garp (in a thematic story appropriate way) is Imu, The Gorosei, Blackbeard, or the reincarnation of Xebec.... anybody else would be shit.

Kuzon is not that guy. Akainu would leave a bad taste in people’s mouths. Kong would be confusing (like only if he was given orders by Imu or the Gorosei). and someone like Shanks or Mihawk would just be weird (same if Big Mom or Kaido are still around).

Dragon is likely not the “man marked by flames”... if it is someone we know of previously, it may be like Scopper Gaban or Silver Axe, someone from Roger or Rocks’s old crew.  (imo, Scopper may just be at Laughtale, doing a Treasure Island thing).

We already seen the Flying Dutchman, it is Vander Decken’s ship (even tho he does have a devil fruit power that could move a ponygliph rather easily). There is also the Davy Back Fight and the whole thing with Davy Jones being a sea devil. A Davy Back Fight near the end of the series would be appropriate. It could even take place after the World Government is over thrown just to add some high-stakes levity to determine who gets to set foot on Laughtale First.   (a last minute tournament of power... you say.... fffff)

Like, going on the whole “One Piece is turning into Star Wars” kick.

Dragon...

We have characters in OP that deal with souls and the afterlife. One of them was right there on God Valley and with Rocks. That being Linlin. If someone gives their soul up willingly, she doesn't have to use force to steal it. She also doesn't have to take all of someone's soul. She could leave enough parts behind for them to still be alive/functional and have the rest in a Soul Jar somewhere else (maybe to be returned later).  

What is Linlin going to do with a large chunk Rocks' soul after his body was killed? She could turn it into a Homie, that may end up turning on her.... or maybe even stick the soul in some unsuspecting toddler at some random port they come across?

And then we have Stussy Buckingham and MADS out there making clones of other Rocks Pirates. Clones have lineage factor that remembers past abilities of the person they were cloned from. It also takes 5 years for a clone to mature to 20yo (according to Judge and his clones). 35y ago Weevil was made, but wasn't successful. 5 years later (30y ago) was roughly when MADS broke up, as Vegapunk was experimenting on King/Alber and Kaido for the world Government when King was still a teenager (King is currently 47... and Yamato is 28, "born" shortly around that same time) .

So in that 5 years span (35-30y ago), there might be a MADS-made Clone of Rocks that could have been produced and even matured to adulthood.... The Clones have their own personalities independent of the person they were made from. (We see this with Weevil,  S-Snake, S-Hawk, and Sussy Stussy)  So while the original may be evil, their clone may be taught to be a better person.... and just killing that clone because of who they were made from before they even done anything would be murdering an innocent person....

but wait... what about introducing Rocks' Lost Soul to Rocks' Cloned Body? hmm....? Would the clone's soul be enough to win out and dominate/expel the other soul, or would they have to occupy the same space and constantly fight over who is in control... if that clone had 30 years worth of experience to grow and be independent on their own, it may be harder for Rocks to take control.

... Dragon gets possessed by Rocks. Kills Garp. Then Luffy, Sabo, and Koby team up to fight Dragon/Xebec... much like how Garp and Roger teamed up to fight Xebec on God Valley.  Dragon is saved, but steps down as active leader of the Rev Army because his reputation is now in shreds, and Sabo is its new figure head.

Dragon/Xebec = Darth Vader

Garp = Obiwan

Luffy, Sabo, and Koby team up to avenge Garp and to save Dragon.

Another fringe theory that is going around is that Xebec destroyed Akainu’s childhood home. (this is actually quite an old one)

So when MADs broke up 30 years ago, the Government absorbed all of Vegapunk’s assets. They found Xebec’s clone (Dragon) on ice. Garp took responsibility for the clone, named him, and thought bringing him into the Marines would be a good idea (this is not ooc for Garp). The problem is... Akainu recognized that this person looked just like Rocks, the pirate that destroyed his home. It started a heated rivalry between them.

Dragon was just naturally better at everything (lineage factor), and his “equal justice” mantra clashed with Akainu’s “absolute justice” mantra. Akainu may even be the reason why Dragon left the Marines, Ohara may not have been the first time Akainu went ‘overboard’ with his orders and it disgusted Dragon.  At one point, Dragon may have even been fast-tracked onto a path of becoming a Vice Admiral or an Admiral and was given a logia fruit, but refused the promotion and left the marines instead.

1. It was partly a means of helping differentiate San/San-2's tone of voice from Ichi and Ni, but for the most part it's a product of abuse and the lingering intrusive thoughts that he's a screwup and slow and stupid, resulting in him developing into a Third-Person Person. I like to think that if Ghidorah communicated in Japanese, the pronouns they'd use are more archaic, like Ichi using chin ("I" as used by Emperors until after WWII, analogous to the Royal "We"), Ni using ore-sama ("my magnificent self"); San/San-2 would use sessha ("this lowly, unworthy one" or "one who is clumsy").

In addition to San's speech gradually incorporating punctuation and using the first person, his Japanese pronoun might be boku ("I, a non-threatening man") or he might switch to ore ("I, a tough young person") to seem more impressive; meanwhile San-2 still uses sessha.

2. Yup! That was meant to be the setup to a cheeky little Brick Joke, hence Rick Stanton's comment about Tejada owing him twenty bucks.

3. In keeping with GVK and that awesome moment when Goji charges up Kong's axe (*chef kiss*), I'd say it's the former; the latter struck me as a little strange when it popped up in the 2014 novelization, and as much as I pull things from the novelizations that's one I'm leaving alone.

Godzilla vs Kong review

I really liked this movie.  It has some really great fights. In fact I’d go as far to say it has some of the best fights in the Monsterverse so far. The fights are brutal and they don’t hold back. I love the viciousness of it. You have Kong and Godzilla going at it and they always change things up in the fight so its unique and never boring. Like in Hong Kong Godzilla goes on all fours just to bite Kongs feet. I’ve never seen him do that before. They even throw in some fun easter eggs like Kong shoving the handle of his axe down Godzilla’s throat as a reference to Kong shoving the tree down Godzilla’s throat. And the thing is it never comes off as distracting.

The human side of the story was kind of weak but serviceable. Weirdly enough the team Kong humans and team Godzilla humans never interact which I’m torn on. It would be interesting to see them interact but I don’t know if that would drag the film down. 

The one human character I found disappointing was Ren Serizawa. He’s the son of Serizawa so you’d think he’d be a big character and a dangerous opponent since he’d know the ins and outs of Monarch. Instead he’s just there to pilot Mechagodzilla. I would’ve like to see him get some characterization. Even something like him being angry at his dad for being more interested in monsters than his own son. It’d be cliche but it would at least be something. 

On Mechagodzilla it took me some time to get used to his design. He’s more boxy and bulky in this like a transformer and weirdly enough he reminds me of the Showa Era Mechagodzilla. I guess it’s all the rockets he has that does it. Personally, I always preferred Kiryu since he was sleek yet deadly. He had a long tail and felt like a real mech that could exist. Mechagozilla in this movie is brutal and I love it. He has a long tail which is nice and he has a spinning drill thing which was a neat touch. His design is a bit more basic yet it works in a way since he does appear a bit skeletal and has all these tricks underneath his armor so it surprises you. At first I was confused if Mechagodzilla gained sentience from the energy source after frying Ren’s brain or if Kevin was possesing Mechagodzilla. I thought about it over time and I think it’s Kevin possessing Mechagodzilla. I don’t think this version of Mechagodzilla is my favorite but he is an interesting incarnation of the character that is fun to watch.

I love the hollow earth. It’s so weird and creative. It shows some bizarre creatures and hints at a larger world. Even the way gravity works there is bizarre. Like when Kong jumps in the air and starts floating and lands on the other side of the canyon. Its kind of surreal to watch. The Warbats look cool and remind me of Kobra from Godzilla the Series from the 90′s. I wonder if Quetzlcoatl is a feathered Warbat? I look forward to them exploring the Hollow Earth some more. I’d like to see how the ecosystem there works. How does the food chain work? Where is that light source coming from? It gives you a tease they’ve been building up through out this film series and I want to see more.

I know they cut scenes from the film and it feels significant. I remember seeing stills on the internet of Alexander Skarsgard punching out a guy on a beach in Waimanalo. Or a still of some bully giving Emma Russel grief at school. Those scenes are never in the film. I even remember hearing a rumor Giancarlo Esposito was supposed to be in the movie yet he wasn’t. I kind of wonder what those scenes would have looked like. Would it have helped or hurt the film? I’m not sure but I am curious to see what it would have looked like.

The soundtrack is surprisingly good in this movie. It’s by Junkie XL who I’m normally not a big fan of but here it works. You get a sense of power and energy from it. It kind of reminds me of Primal Rage almost.

Regarding who won I think Godzilla won in the end. The way I interpret it is Godzilla beat Kong in the third fight and in the end he respects Kong and Kong respects him. Kong recognizes Godzilla as the Alpha, while Godzilla recognizes Kong as a worthy opponent that deserves respect. I know some fans will interpret it how they want to on whether or not Kong or Godzilla won. I think  that’s inevitable since some fans will just see things their way and twist the scenes to make it fit. It’s human nature. Overall, I liked this movie. It’s a big dumb fun monster mash and it does that extremely well. I look forward to seeing more of the Monsterverse if they decide to continue it. If they don’t, at least they ended on a high note.

Right, so I’m excited

Well, starting with Godzilla since I am a huge Godzilla fanboy (a little known fact which I’m sure my follower base has been largely unaware up until now, I’m sure) I am both anxious and excited at the prospect of Godzilla taking on an antagonistic role, although I’m sure that’s only part of the story.

As many kaiju fans have pointed out, there are some definite Gamera 3 parallels where the once heroic guardian kaiju seemingly turning against humanity, likely because of an imbalance in nature and then another group in oppostion to him summons an old rival kaiju in an attempt to stop him. Fascinating. (Also watch Shusuke Kaneko’s Gamera trilogy, it slaps.)

Also, an antagonistic Monsterverse Godzilla who’s got it out for humanity is another concept we kaiju fans have long been waiting for, including me. But I’m very much wary of just where this will go. I’m hoping they don’t outright villify him just for the sake of justifying his conflict with Kong. (That and between Shin-Godzilla and the Godzilla Earth trilogy I feel like we got a decent antagonist godzilla fix.)

(Well maybe not decent in the Earth trilogy’s case.)

Although Mechagodzilla or not, I can definitely understand his reasons for going after humanity. (The COVID disaster, the ever present dangers of pollution, rampant corruption and amorality on every level of society, writing in hollywood these days, youtube ads...)

Now for Kong, I’m actually pleasantly surprised! Quite plesantly surprised! I love how much heart they’re putting into his portrayal and all the updates they’ve given him to stand a chance against Godzilla. Sure the ancient kaiju ax is cool, but I’m quite delighted by his new child friend/adoptive daughter. A welcome change of pace from kidnapping women that warms the heart.

I love the entire set-up of the aircraft carrier fight. The whole thing feels like it’s made of hype and it even feel surprisingly plausible. Everything from the sight of Kong in chains to how Godzilla’s whole entrance tips you off to something being wrong (e.g. him cutting through a ship with his plates, as opposed to casually dodging it). Also I know it’s supposed to be a reference to King Kong vs Godzilla (1962), but is anyone else reminded of Godzilla vs Mothra (1993)?

I admit, was actually critical of the whole concept of pitting Godzilla and Kong against each other in the first place. Even if their first fight was an awesome monster movie on it’s own, I always felt like Godzilla and Kong came from two different worlds. But here they not only feel like a worthy match for each other, but they feel even more like they belong in the same universe than before! There’s a greater sense of rivalry and mythology between those two that I absolutely dig.

I can’t see what’s inside that exploding mountain--MECHAGODZILLA?! IS THAT YOU??? HAVE YOU FINALLY COME TO PUT US OUT OF OUR MISERY?!

Where’s Mothra and Rodan? Just asking.

Actually where’s Behemoth, Scylla, and Methuselah? Again, just asking.

Loving that the human story involves kids getting stuff done. Seriously looking forward to Kong’s pal/daughter, Jia, and Madison and Firebrand Josh playing Godzilla’s advocate Godzilla 2000 style.

I don’t if that Japanese guy in the shadowy blue lab with Mechagodzilla? blueprints is Serizawa’s kid or not but if his own son is out to smear Godzilla’s name or worse, the possibilities are endless. Does he resent Godzilla for taking up most of his father’s time? Did he misunderstand his sacrifice? Does he oppose his father’s views of the beast--seeing him as a bigger threat than a protector? Or is he just an egotistical jerk with daddy issues? An easy puzzle to solve on day one?

I want to say more about the other human characters, but I feel like I don’t know enough to say much about them. Although I do look forward to how they handle conflicting organizations and debates on kaiju.

I love the warbats and the fight Kong’s going to have with them but why are they called that, especially when there’s actual bats in there?

Was I seeing things or was that the Super X over Kong’s shoulder when he touched the handprint?

Seriously though, as someone who thought KOTM looked fine as it was, I adore the new direction. Adam Wingard is doing us all a huge favour with daytime colours and vibrant colour palettes without colour correction.

Hearing the Space Odyssey music from the first Godzilla 2014 trailer gave me chills.

I did not expect to hear another rap song in a Godzilla trailer so soon nor did I expect it to work as well as it did. (Although it does pale in comparison to G2014′s cinematic homage, KOTM’s classical music, or anything Shin did.)

All in all, I’m quite excited to see what WB and Legendary has to offer us now that they got their release dates and such in order at long last. Even if it means this is the last of the Monsterverse films and my favourite kaiju might bite the dust.
