it's 3 4 a.m. and I'm hungry and we're perpetually (very) poor so bc I can't help it here is a list of some foods I dearly desperately miss:
- COFFEE.
- almost every fast food. just, hot multi-ingredient satisfying meals acquired in under 10 minutes that require no prep, cooking, or cleanup (quality can vary drastically ofc but idgaf at this point)
- more specifically: giant fucking cheeseburgers, hot and juicy, fully dressed. Taco Bell. and Chinese food. And good pizza that doesn't come from dollar store freezers. And biiig thicc sandwiches from subway or similar
- boneless garlic parmesan chicken wings
- Arby's. Roast beef, curly fries.
- French fries in general
- Zaxby's/Panera salads
- only had it a couple times but chipotle/qdoba burritos or bowls
- restaurants. haven't been out to eat since before the pandemic but just, big complicated filling meals cooked by someone else
- more specifically: warm rolls with honey butter, chicken tenders and fries, enchiladas, chicken fried steak, a good hearty chili, fettuccini alfredo with broccoli and chicken, lasagna, fully loaded potato soup, loaded nachos, a good baked spaghetti and meatballs ...
- fried pickles
- homemade comfort food, like, a full "Sunday dinner" spread. Meatloaf, or pot roast with veggies, mashed potatoes and gravy, baked mac n cheese, sweet cornbread, green beans with bacon, deviled eggs, a giant deluxe salad...
- SALADS. BIG FRESH CRISP SALADS WITH ALL THE TOPPINGS AND VARIETY
- a full breakfast spread. hash browns, pancakes, lots of eggs with onions and peppers, juice, sausages, biscuits and gravy, etc
- orange juice
- a wholeass veggie or fruit tray. mostly the carrots, or cantaloupe/strawberries/apples but give me the whole tray and leave me alone
- my "safe" foods
- banana nut bread 😭
- from-scratch home baked goods, more than just the $1-box-cake-and-$1-frosting every few months. All The Bars, All The Cookies, pies, the decadent brownies
- fucking. CHOCOLATE.
- snacks in general. Just, having them, and the ability to grab a handful between meals if needed or desired
- the delicious but "expensive" (>$5) grocery shit we can't splurge on. there's this amazing cranberry almond chicken salad...
- quiche
- hamburger helper
- polish sausage fried with peppers and onions and sauerkraut
- potato salad
- deli pepperturkey
- non-american cheese
- butterscotch pudding
- chili cheese tater tots
- pizza rolls
- donuts
- granola bars. trail mix
- yogurt with or without granola topping
- really anything that isn't plain rice and beans, bologna/cheese/PB&J sandwiches, ramen, hot dogs, oatmeal, toast, canned mixed veggies, generic boxed mac n cheese, butter noodles, and frozen waffles
- i have to stop now. if u read this far, thanks! pls go indulge in ur favorite foods and take your time to deeply savor them

What did you eat at home for meals growing up at home? Is it pasta every day? Foreigner marrying an American man and stressed about cooking !!! Help!!! #Traditional American cuisine. #Internet Doesn't help.
while we did have pasta sometimes, i certainly ate other things growing up! i’ll try my best to list some options for each meal, hopefully i can help 😅
breakfast:
honestly i usually skipped breakfast because eating so early in the morning made me feel sick. and by early i mean like, 7:00 am when i had to get up for school. if my dad was around to cook breakfast (my mom usually did dinner, my dad usually did breakfast) like on holidays or weekends, we had:
- biscuits and jam/butter/honey
- lots of eggs! scrambled eggs, poached eggs, baked eggs, fried eggs, omelettes! eggs go awesome with toast
- bacon for sure. sausage is good too.
- pancakes and waffles are super common breakfast foods. syrup and butter goes great with them, as well as fresh fruit and jam.
- we also had hot peppers and cheese with toast and scrambled eggs, but that’s because it’s something my mom ate growing up and we had a garden to grow our own peppers. i don’t know if i’d call this one american, but it’s yummy
- the most american breakfast i can think of is pancakes, bacon, and fried eggs with a nice glass of milk or orange juice.
- cereal and milk is a classic too. this is really what i had/have most often for breakfast. i love cheerios and rice krispies! and then for the more sugary stuff froot loops and lucky charms.
lunch:
for lunch, i was mostly on my own to feed myself, either due to school or my mom telling my to.
- sandwiches. i’m talking pb&j, pb and honey, cheese and meats, grilled cheese, tuna fish. if somebody asked me what i thought a classic lunch was i would say a big sandwich. chips are a good side, as well as vegetables or fruit. carrot sticks, celery (if you like it), apple slices, orange, berries, etc.
- because i was feeding myself, this is when i’d have top ramen or kraft mac and cheese. sometimes canned tomato soup. easy to make and tastes good
- leftovers from dinner is good here too. cereal if you’re feeling super lazy.
dinner:
okay so my mom was a stay at home mom, and she cooked dinner nearly every single night. she also made some weird things that i didn’t like, so i’m gonna stick to dinners that i think are yummy.
- yes, pasta. spaghetti and meatballs, homemade mac and cheese, fettuccine alfredo, steak stroganoff, pasta salads, lasagna. i love pasta so damn much, and would be pretty happy eating it all the time! but there are other common dinners lol
- tacos or taco salad. we had this a lot, and it’s not too hard to prepare. lots of veggies, some meat, some hot sauce *chefs kiss*
- if we’re talking american cuisine, hamburgers and hotdogs. i mean that’s about as classic as it gets. other barbecue as well. my dad liked making barbecue chicken.
- if you’re grilling/barbecueing things you can make some killer sides. grilled corn is amazing, along with other grilled veggies! we had squash and zucchini. grilled pineapple and peaches are also tasty.
- on sundays, my dad would sometimes make a pot roast. he did most of the meat cooking, like steak or pork chops or chicken or turkey.
- lots of soups. chicken dumpling soup is a favorite of mine, but we also had tomato, borchst, minestrone. rolls are a good side for soups!
- we’d have stir fry and fried rice sometimes, always yummy.
- pizza. oh god did i eat pizza growing up. mostly because my parents seemed obsessed with making their own, but a good homemade pizza is to die for!
- baked potatoes. easy to make! throw some potatoes in the oven, prepare toppings: cheese, butter, chives, bacon, sour cream.
- quesadillas and/or nachos with homemade salsa. mmmmmm
- fish. i really hate fish, but my family likes it so. we would have salmon a lot, tilapia sometimes too. tuna steaks on occasion. not my thing tho :/
- for sides, my mom would make us eat healthy things. salads, vegetables, fruits. i mean i love vegetables! i also prefer them raw, so it’s really easy for me to prepare them lol. but you can roast them in the oven, that’s also really good! fruit salads are pretty classic. my favorite fruit salad is grapefruit and orange in a honey-cardamom sauce 🤤. rolls or french bread are common sides too. i think french bread dipped in olive oil and balsamic vinegar is super yummy. sometimes we’d open a bag of chips.
dessert:
kinda a meal, kinda not but still important! i’m not actually a huge dessert person, but i can tell you the popular ones.
- ice cream. there’s so many options at the store, and it’s common to buy a pint or quart, keep it in the freezer, and eat it.
- cookies. there are so many kinds. chocolate chip, oatmeal, snickerdoodle, gingersnaps, sugar, pumpkin chocolate, peanut butter. choco chip is the most classic one tho
- pies. pumpkin pie is usually a fall thing, but you can have it any time. other common flavors are apple, blueberry, lemon meringue, cherry, banana cream, chocolate, pecan.
- cake. i hate cake. most people like it tho! chocolate, vanilla, carrot, red velvet. i mean there’s a billion flavors and frosting combos. cupcakes too.
- brownies. a good, fudgy, chocolatey brownie is amazing.
- jello? i guess? idk i feel like people enjoy the idea of jello more than jello itself. i may not be a good judge of that tho. my mom feed me jello when i had a stomach bug cause i would actually eat it and it wouldn’t hurt too bad to puke up, so jello is a sick person food in my mind.
i hope you get some meal ideas from this! and don’t be afraid to cook from your own culture! i love eating other cultures foods, and i kinda think of american cuisine as incorporating other kinds of food as well.

Where To Get Italian Delivery & Takeout In LA (1) added to Google Docs
Where To Get Italian Delivery & Takeout In LA (1)
Sure, you could boil some pasta shells, mix in a jar of sauce, and call it dinner, but why would you? Los Angeles has plenty of incredible Italian restaurants, and most of them are currently offering their entire menus for takeout and/or delivery. Even better, a few of LA’s most-exclusive spots are doing it for the first time. So put down the Prego and support one of these great spots instead. This list will be consistently updated.
All restaurants featured on The Infatuation are selected by our editorial team. Where To Get Italian Delivery & Takeout In LA is presented by Uber Eats. In the midst of the coronavirus pandemic, supporting our local restaurant community has never been more important. Uber Eats customers can now give directly to the restaurants they love at checkout. 100% will go to the restaurant. Order now to support. See app for details.
Featured In The Ultimate LA Delivery & Takeout Guide Check out all our guides THE SPOTS  Barrique $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Venice $$$$ 796 Main Street 8.0 /10
A straightforward spot in Venice serving excellent, classic Italian food, Barrique is a great bet if you’re on the Westside. Their pastas are good - especially the linguine nere (squid ink spaghetti with lobster), but their meats are really what we’re all about here. There’s a wild boar pork chop with raspberry sauce, smoked duck, and dry-aged ribeye. Make sure you get some prosciutto and burrata, too. App delivery and takeout available.
 Jakob Layman Bestia $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Arts District ,  Downtown LA $$$$ 2121 E. 7th Pl. 9.1 /10
A great special-occasion spot that normally doesn’t do takeout, Bestia is an ideal place to order in when you’re celebrating something big (in your living room). Their $49 to-go menu includes their killer house-cured salumi, spinach ricotta cavatelli, balsamic-braised wagyu short ribs, and more - seven dishes in all, served family-style. Make sure to reserve yours in advance, because much like a table at Bestia, these meals go fast.
 Cento Pasta Bar $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Downtown LA $$$$ 128 E 6th St 9.0 /10
Cento is one of our favorite lunch spots in Downtown LA, serving high-end pastas from their tiny wine bar-style space. The bad news is that they’re not serving those pastas right now. The good news? They’re selling the next best thing: Bulk pasta and sauces, so you can make your own Italian feast at home. That means fresh braised beef ragu and amatriciana, with hand-rolled gnocchi. They’re also offering - for the first time - a porchetta sandwich that you should be extremely interested in. Takeout only.
 Colapasta $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 1241 5th St 7.7 /10
Santa Monica’s Colapasta is a tiny handmade pasta spot in a commercial part of Fifth St. In addition to affordable pre-made pasta ($2 for 8 oz. packages), they’ve got family meals like a Bolognese supper that’s an absolute steal - it involves a pound of grass-fed beef Bolognese, tomato sauce, and two pounds of pasta for $24. And if nothing else can cheer you up right now, we suspect the solution might be a tray of their incredible lasagna ($59, feeds 6-8). In-store pick-up only, order via their website.
 Jakob Layman Cosa Buona $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Italian  in  Echo Park $$$$ 2100 W Sunset Blvd 8.3 /10
Are mozzarella sticks the most Italian dish on this guide? Of course not - but the ones from Cosa Buona are so good that we really don’t care. This spot in Echo Park also serves pizzas and salads that are highly worth seeking out in whatever delivery app you’re using. Order a Biancoverde (white pizza with ricotta, garlic, spinach and basil), a chopped salad, and those mozz sticks, and you’ll have enough food for lunch the next morning. App delivery and takeout available.
Eataly $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Century City $$$$ 10250 Santa Monica Blvd Not
Rated
Yet
Eataly, the behemoth restaurant/grocery store/wine shop in the Westfield Century City is open for all your Italian food and drink-related needs. They’ve got a bunch of prepped antipasti, pastas, and pizzas, along with DIY pasta kits and Italian wines. The bucatini all’amatriciana is our favorite thing to order here, but just follow your gut, because the menu is massive. Delivery via apps, or in-store pick-up available.
 Ellie's $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Long Beach $$$$ 204 Orange Avenue 8.2 /10
Ellie’s is a Southern Italian spot in Long Beach that you should absolutely investigate, especially with their current takeout special. That involves a mix-and-match pasta deal with sauce, a Caesar salad, and garlic bread for $35. They’ve also got an entire lasagna for three or four people that we’d highly recommend if you’re feeding a whole family, and some off-menu options like Italian and meatball subs. App delivery and takeout available.
 Felix $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Venice $$$$ 1023 Abbot Kinney Boulevard 8.8 /10
Felix is usually one of toughest places in town to nab a reservation, and doesn’t normally offer takeout. So that might make your meal from this Venice spot taste even better. Or maybe not, because their fresh pastas need zero help on that front - they’re absolutely fantastic. They’re serving pizzas, pasta kits for two (we recommend the duck ragu and the casarecce with sausage sugo), and, of course, their excellent budino. Takeout only.
 Jakob Layman Hippo $ $ $ $ American ,  Italian  in  Highland Park $$$$ 5918 N Figueroa St 8.2 /10
Hippo isn’t exactly an Italian restaurant, but it is a restaurant that serves some of our favorite pasta in the city, so we won’t get caught up in semantics about it. In addition to serving dishes like fettuccine with pork ragu and butternut squash cappellacci (both of which you should order), this Highland Park spot has individual cocktails to-go for $9. We recommend the Hippo Old Fashioned, with spiced pear and walnut, but you won’t be disappointed by anything you order - especially if you order the cocktail five-pack. App delivery and takeout available.
 Jakob Layman Jame Enoteca $ $ $ $ Italian  in  El Segundo $$$$ 241 Main St. 8.3 /10
A low-key strip-mall spot in El Segundo, Jame Enoteca serves the kind of soul-curing meals we need in particularly tough times. Focus on the salads - get the spicy Caesar (with Calabrian chilies) and what might be the world’s best kale salad - and any of their excellent, handmade pastas. Trust us when we say you can’t go wrong with them, but our favorites are the mushroom lasagna and the spicy rigatoni alla vodka. They’re also offering 40% off beer and wine, so be sure to stock up. App delivery and takeout available.
 Order delivery   Benji Dell Jon & Vinny's $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Italian  in  Fairfax $$$$ 412 N. Fairfax Ave. 9.3 /10
You were probably in LA for approximately three days before you heard about Jon & Vinny’s, the Italian-American spot on Fairfax serving remarkably excellent pastas and pizzas. Their spicy fusilli is the one constantly on Instagram feeds (for good reason), but that’s not the only pasta worth your time - get the rigatoni cacio e pepe, too, and add on some pizzas. Our favorites are the LA Woman (burrata, tomato, and basil) and the Ham & Yeezy (spicy peppers, red onions, and ham). App delivery and takeout available.
 Benji Dell Little Dom's $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Los Feliz $$$$ 2128 Hillhurst Ave. 8.3 /10
If you know one thing about Little Dom’s in Los Feliz, it’s probably their $25 Monday Night Supper. Well now, they’ve got a version of it every night (which is fitting, because literally every day feels like a Monday). The three-course menu constantly changes, but will include combinations like grilled artichoke, baked ziti, and rice pudding, or arancini, grilled local fish, and olive oil cake with berries. App delivery and takeout available.
Marino Ristorante $$$$ 6001 Melrose Ave
There’s a good chance you’ve driven by Marino Restaurant a million times without noticing it - it’s been in a bungalow-style building in a residential part of Hollywood since the ’80s. Right now, they’re offering all kinds of prepped foods for you to make at home, from fresh pasta starting at $10/lb, to oxtail and bacon amatriciana sauce. And if you’re with a family (or have some space in your freezer), they’ve got affordable 12-serving trays of classic Italian-American comfort food like eggplant parm ($65) and lasagna ($90). Call for pick-up or free local Hancock Park delivery, delivery also available on most apps.
 Jakob Layman Milo And Olive $ $ $ $ Pizza ,  Pasta ,  Italian  in  Santa Monica $$$$ 2723 Wilshire Blvd. 8.3 /10
An excellent place for a family meal out in Santa Monica, Milo + Olive is just as good of a spot for ordering in. Their huge pizzas are big enough to feed two or three, and they’ve got pasta meal sets for three or four people that involve spaghetti and meatballs, alfredo and peas, and more. It’s going to be pretty hard to go wrong, especially if you order one of their absolutely addictive garlic knots per person. App delivery and takeout available.
Order delivery   Aliza Sokolow Mozza2Go $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Hancock Park ,  Hollywood $$$$ 6610 Melrose Ave Not
Rated
Yet
There aren’t many personal-sized pizzas as good as the ones from Mozza2Go, the spot on the corner of Melrose and Highland in Hollywood. They make pizzas with fantastic, high-quality ingredients, like prosciutto di Parma and rucola, and braised leeks with ’nduja. Our favorite, though, is the simple, bright-tasting Primavera pizza with peas, asparagus, and ricotta. Mozzaplex has also been helping out-of-work service industry employees with meals and household essentials, so it’ll feel good supporting them. App delivery and takeout available.
Order delivery   Holly Liss Osteria La Buca $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Hancock Park ,  Hollywood ,  Larchmont $$$$ 5210 Melrose Ave 8.2 /10
If you’re looking for an excellent way to mix up your family meals this week, Osteria La Buca has exactly what you need. They’re offering family meals for two to six that are $15-25 per person, and include shared plates of chicken parm, pappardelle Bolognese, farm lettuce salads, and tiramisu. If you’re not looking to share, they’ve also got an a la carte menu of pizzas, pastas (get the short rib ravioli), and more. Make sure you add in a bottled gin martini for two, even if you’re alone. App delivery and takeout available.
Order delivery   Jakob Layman Pasta Sisters Culver City $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Culver City $$$$ 3280 Helms Ave 8.3 /10
Considering the original Pasta Sisters on Pico is approximately the size of a parking space, and has near-constant lines, it’s safe to say they’ve perfected the art of delivery and takeout. You can mix and match the pastas and sauces, choosing from fantastic, chewy, handmade pastas like spaghetti, penne, and tagliatelle, with rich-but-perfectly-balanced options like pesto, arrabiata, and black truffle butter. There are locations in Pico-Arlington and Culver City, so chances are that wherever you are, delivery won’t take too long. App delivery and takeout available.
 Jakob Layman Rossoblu $ $ $ $ Italian  in  Downtown LA $$$$ 1124 San Julian St 9.2 /10
Rossoblu is one of the most remarkable upscale Italian restaurants in Los Angeles, so it makes sense that it’s a pretty damn good place to get takeout, too. And if you’ve got some extra money for delivery, there aren’t many better options - you can get whole-grilled orata with olive pesto, a pork tomahawk served with house sausage, and a bunch of great house-made pastas. It’s also not often that you’re able to get their food this (relatively) affordably - meals for four run $100-$125 and include a main meat dish, multiple pastas, and vegetable sides. Note that you need 24 hours notice for these set meals. App delivery and takeout available.
 Krystal Thompson Union $ $ $ $ Pasta ,  Italian  in  Pasadena $$$$ 37 E Union St 8.9 /10
If you live in Pasadena, you know about Union. But if you don’t, it’s time you learn - this Italian spot serves pastas worth driving for, even if you live in the farthest part of Marina del Rey. There’s an excellent carbonara/cacio e pepe mashup, a lasagna verde we have nightly dreams about, and a mushroom and polenta dish that may very well be our favorite thing on the menu. They’ve also got family meals for four around $60 that we highly recommend. App delivery and takeout available.

Lasagna Roll Ups
These Lasagna Roll Ups are an easier approach to this classic Italian comfort food dish of layered pasta, meat, and cheese. Simple prep and easy assembly means this is a lasagna dinner you can have on the table any day of the week!
If you are looking for inspiration for your next pasta night, you might also want to try Chicken Spaghetti Casserole, Chicken Enchilada Pasta, Creamy Pork Carnitas Pasta, or Creamy Garlic Shrimp Alfredo Pasta.
Lasagna Roll Ups
All the flavors of a classic lasagna are present in this dish, but wrapped up in a fun approach that makes puts an interesting twist on dinner! We also love how rolling up lasagna noodles means that you have perfectly portioned servings ready to be dished out or placed in containers to enjoy as leftovers later in the week.
It’s also really easy to bake only half a batch of lasagna roll ups and freeze the rest to have on hand. Just thaw the frozen lasagna roll ups in the fridge overnight then bake as directed.
The kids also really enjoy helping with this one because it’s so fun rolling up the fillings in the lasagna noodles.
What goes into lasagna roll ups?
Lasagna noodles – you will want the classic kind that you boil, rather than the no-cook kind.
Marinara sauce – buy your favorite jar of marinara sauce or make it at home from scratch.
Ground beef – if you want, you could use mild or spicy Italian sauce instead for a different flavor profile.
Onion – sauteeing the onion with the ground beef helps make jarred marinara sauce taste like it was homemade.
Minced garlic
Salt & pepper
Ricotta cheese
Egg
Dried Italian herbs – some basil, oregano, and garlic powder are added because they are all classic Italian flavors.
Mozzarella cheese – use freshly grated mozzarella cheese since it melts better than the pre-shredded kind that is coated in a powder to prevent it from sticking.
Parmesan cheese – we recommend freshly grated Parmesan cheese rather than the powdered kind from a bottle.
Parsley – fresh chopped Italian flat leaf parsley adds a bit of color and flavor to the finished dish.
How to make lasagna roll ups
Start by boiling the lasagna noodles in a large pot filled with salted water. Cook according to the package directions, then lay out flat on a baking sheet that has been sprayed with cooking spray to prevent them from sticking.
Meanwhile, make the meat sauce by browning ground beef and the chopped onion in a large skillet. Add the garlic and season with salt & pepper, then pour the jar of marinara sauce in and reduce the heat to a simmer. The flavors will combine as the sauce simmers slowly while you prepare the rest of the lasagna roll up components.
Make the ricotta cheese filling by mixing ricotta cheese, an egg, dried basil, dried oregano, garlic powder, salt, pepper, mozzarella cheese and Parmesan cheese in a bowl. Set aside.
When read to assemble the lasagna roll ups, evenly divide the ricotta mixture between each of the lasagna noodles and spread it down the length of each noodle. Top with a spoonful of the meaty marinara sauce, then roll up each lasagna noodle and transfer it to a 9×13-inch baking dish with about 1/2 cup of sauce spread in the bottom to keep the lasagna roll ups from sticking.
Top with the remaining sauce and reserved mozzarella cheese, then cover with foil and bake in a 375 degree F oven for 40-45 minutes. Remove the foil during the last 10 minutes of baking. The lasagna should be hot all the way through and the cheese wlill be melted on top. Let sit for 10 minutes, then sprinkle with freshly chopped parsley before serving.
Is lasagna better with ricotta or cottage cheese?
I have found that you can really use either option when making lasagna roll ups, so it mostly comes down to personal preference. Ricotta cheese is a more classic approach to lasagna, but cottage cheese is typically lower in fat and calories.
Why do you put eggs in lasagna?
The egg in the cheese mixture for filling the lasagna roll ups works as a binding agent to help so the cheese doesn’t ooze out as much when serving. Another thing that helps lasagna be less runny is to let it sit for at least 10 minutes before serving any of the lasagna roll ups. This gives them time to set up a bit.

While there are legitimate concerns out there over the authenticity of cultural cuisines and our American foundation of fast food and franchise chain restaurants, taking what is not ours and spinning for profit–it’s easy to get caught up on what is “real” food and what isn’t. One conversation, however, that I feel myself irked by consistently, is what makes Italian food authentic here in the United States. It’s a fair question, after all, because you’re not likely to find meatballs, Alfredo sauce, garlic bread, or a “Hot Dago” [1] back in the Old Country of Italy. But there is a distinct difference in what is Italian and what is Italian-American. After all, the cuisines of immigrants who came from Italy was heavily influenced in not only their fellow foreigners and adjacency to other cultural cuisines, but also in being forced to adapt old dishes to new based on the availability of foods in The States at that time. What we have here is a hodgepodge of old Italian with a distinctly American flair. How do you make do without olive oil? Butter up that bread instead and use plenty of garlic. And what do you do when you show up in a country that’s brimming with cows? Pack up those meatballs like your friendly neighborhood Swedes and toss them in the sugo! And, speaking of sauce, pretty much the only kind easily made was red because canned tomatoes were the only thing easily found in markets at the time–until you got to Alfredo sauce. “Who is Alfredo?” Native Italians will ask–well, he was a chef in Rome back in 1914 who made a white sauced based dish that happened to be served with fettuccine noodles that day when two American Silent-Film Stars dined at his restaurant. They loved it so much, they took the recipe back home which became a hit among the elite, solidifying its popularity in Olive Garden’s across the nation after Alfredo’s family later opened a few restaurants showcasing the dish stateside in the 1970’s. [2] So perhaps you can’t find meatball sub sandwiches in Italy, but these are authentic to and traditional Italian-American foods that were invented right here in the United States due to the unique cultural experiences of Italian immigrants at the time.
And probably nothing more storied to this unique experience of cultural history exists in Minnesota than Cossetta’s Market–a pinnacle of Italian-American cuisine and heritage here in St. Paul.
Cossetta’s Market as it stood in 1952. (Photo: Minnesota Historical Society)
In the late 19th century, around 10,000 Italian immigrants made their way to Minnesota–a vast majority of them settling around the Twin Cities, Duluth, and the Iron Range. My great-grandfather was one of them, opting to work in the mines up north. Most of them settled in St. Paul, however, and clustered near the Upper Levee/Landing or “Little Italy” where many of them worked on the railroad (In the 50’s, the Mississippi River flooded this area over and the neighborhood, unfortunately, was forced to relocate). As a result, St. Paul began to see a number of Italian run stores and restaurants pop up and among them was Cossetta’s in 1911. Michael Cossetta came from Calabria, Italy–a region where my family also hails from and can be found on the toe of the Italian boot–and established his deli on the Upper Levee. The market passed through family hands until current owner Dave Cossetta took it over in 1978, at the time only 21-years old and a meat cutter by trade. [4]
It was under Dave that Cossetta’s began to expand into the block of Italian fare it is today. He moved the market to it’s current location–situated down the street from Xcel Energy Center and within walking distance of the Minnesota History Center, Cathedral of Saint Paul, and the Science Museum of Minnesota (Here’s looking at you, Stranger Things fans!) and started branching out into selling meats, deli, and imported Italian groceries. In the grocery, you can find entire aisles dedicated to Italian olive oils, chocolates & candy, noodles, sauces, coffee, etc. And though slightly overpriced, it makes for the ideal stop to get a quick fix of whatever goodie you fell in love with overseas. The meats & deli alone are also worth a gander–it’s the best place to find a variety of spicy capicola (my family’s favorite), the best porchetta & prosciutto in town, and fresh hand-rolled ricotta cheese for those of us who still make their lasagnas homemade.
And the bread, THE BREAD!
Dave then expanded Cossetta’s into a Marketplace & Eatery–it’s here you can find a full quick-service dining experience where you can stuff your face with a slice of pizza, some of the heavenly Mostaccioli con Ricotta–a Cossetta’s staple–or simply run away with a to-go box of tiramisu before all of the delicious carbs slay you.
Or, if you’re looking for a more intimate, fine dining experience–Louis Ristorante & Bar was opened upstairs in 2012 with an eye for both more upscale, traditional mainland Italian dishes as well as some Italian-American staples like Mama Frieda’s meatballs! I’ve eaten at Louis a few times and lemme just…
Special Feature
Bucatini All’ Amatriciana
‘Louis’ Brick Chicken
Formaggi & Frutta
But perhaps the best thing about Cossetta’s is the newly added pastry shop which was designed to reassemble a pasticceria in Italy–it was actually made there, disassembled, and shipped to the US where it was rebuilt for Cossetta’s by Italian craftsmen. [5] Having been to a few of the real deals myself, it certainly does feel like I’m back in Rome.
Not pictured: Drool. Photo from MPR
Leave the diet, take the cannolis! Cakes, tarts, gelati–it’s sweets heaven courtesy of Cossetta’s here. The tables are even packed in and tight just like a real pastry shop in Italy would be–so get over your claustrophobia and get the Italian experience the way it was meant to be, elbows touching and cream puffs oozing. And, naturally, I’ve indulged in my fair share of Lavazza espresso (You’ll find this brand everywhere in Italy!) and gelato here.
Since Dave took over ownership of Cossetta’s, he’s transformed it into a pillar of both Italian-American and traditional Italian cuisine. The blend of both Italian heritages married together like a sweet marinara sauce. Cossetta’s is one of the original Italian restaurants here in Minnesota, so its foundation of Italian-American historical significance had never been in question. But as the years have gone by and with remodels, expansions, and continued redesigns–Cossetta’s is now one of the best stops to get a little taste of the real Italy across the sea too. I’ve gone here to shop for groceries and pick up spicy capicola, tomatoes, and peasant bread to make sandwiches just like my Italian-American grandfather would eat on the farm up north. I’ve been here for coffee and dessert, or for a Christmas party with all of my aunts and cousins where we sat upstairs digging into chicken parmigiana. I’ve gone on dates with my boyfriend to Louis, had met my Italian language class there at the end of semester, and sometimes I’ve simply been in that area of St. Paul walking along the sidewalk–taking the time to smile and marvel at the collection of Italian antiques and decorations in the window.
To me, Cossetta’s is the beating heart of being an Italian-American here in Minnesota.
