Volume 9, Episode 7:

Jaune: I couldn't save them. I was supposed to save them. And they're dead. Yang: No, Jaune. They're gone, but they're not dead. They'll be back. Weiss: Yeah, it's what they wanted. Right, Ruby? Ruby: why are you asking me? Blake: Um. We just— Ruby: Because I'm the leader? Because I'm just supposed to have something to say? 'Cause I don't. Ruby: [more agitated] I mean, why do I have to be the leader anyway? Why do I have to always be the one to pick people up? What about me? 'No time,' right? (…) Ruby: I'm sorry, is this a bad time? Are we supposed to be mourning Jaune's make believe friends? Jaune: They're gone because of you! The walkers came for you, because Neo hates you! Oh, and let's not forget the reason we're in the Ever After in the first place is because of your plan, that that didn't work! 'What about you?' It's ALL about you!

... which is all to say, it was fucked up the first time Ruby said all this. It was a red flag all the way back at Beacon. Ruby was wrong to tell Jaune that and frame it that way, and this has been building between them literally since day one because of it.

Ruby's never had a healthy or reasonable conception of what a leader is or what their responsibilities are and like. how could she? between being raised in her mother's shadow and her silver eyes putting her on a magic pedestal she never stood a chance. and if she confronted the fact that that might be a problem that would mean admitting she has a problem which is against the rules for leaders. it's never allowed to be about her; she can't want things or have doubts.

Ruby's optimism didn't break, she stopped choosing it. because it was always a conscious decision she was making. and now she can't anymore, understandably, because she's too tired! she doesn't have anything left to give!

which also brings up--

when Ruby snaps at Blake to shut up after Blake tries to look on the bright side, she doesn't say "You're wrong."

she says "Don't do that."

even in her meanest moment, she's not actually trying to pull Blake down.

she's trying to stop Blake from making the same mistake she did, the same error in logic she then passed on to Jaune, which was insisting relentless positivity was the only way to lead.

I wasn't really tagged because I don't have many mutuals, but @veroocasanova said anyone who saw theirs could do it, so I'm trying. Sorry if it's annoying.

Lovesquare (Miraculous), DJwifi is great too, but the irony and the shenanigans of the lovesquare win. I have a slight preference for Marichat stuff, but all sides are valid and great (even if snekmouse is clearly the best and has so many canon scenes to back it up). Adrien and Marinette are just pawsome! I usually lean towards mlm or wlw ships, but other than Marc and Nathaniel (who have some great fics and fanarts), none really caught my attention in Miraculous and the lovesquare is funny, full of love and trust and simply miraculous.

Spierfeld, Bram and Simon from the Simonverse by Becky Albertalli. I loved the books and the movie and Simon allowed me to accept my homosexuality, so I'm a little biased, but they're both so relatable, I was scared sometimes because I had similar thoughts. I'm a mix of Bram, Simon and Leah honestly. She was so relatable in Leah on the Offbeat.

Sidlink, Link and Sidon from Breath of the Wild, though Zelink is really close. Like, I still remember meeting Sidon and spending way too much time at Zora's Domain looking at him and following him.

Arkos, Jaune and Pyrrha (RWBY), though I ship Jaune with Neptune, Sun or doggo guy from Vol. 8 (I can't remember his name and I feel so bad). Marrow! Arkos is wholesome and Bumblebee is god tier too!

A bonus one but it's platonic: Toothless and Hiccup from How to Train Your Dragon. It's top tier friendship and you can't convince me otherwise. They made me cry so much, it's unreal.

Last song I listened to: Indomitable from RWBY Vol. 6's soundtrack. It's really good and always make me feel a little better. Le mur qui nous sépare is pretty neat too, but I grow tired of it after a while.

Last film I watched: Big Hero Six. I was in a Baymax mood (he's the perfect robot, don't sue me). I'm satisfied with my care.

Currently reading: Miraculous fics. Adrienette month is ending, but we were fed so much good content, it was purrty clawsome. For books, I recently finished Red White & Royal Blue by Casey McQuinston, it was really good! It felt like reading a fanfic, but it's a "real" book. The relationship between the character is well written, and I'd pay so much to live in that alternate universe. Gimme the miraculous, I'll wish for it XD.

Currently craving: Affection Something sweet like chocolate chips and banana cookies. I'm a Tikki at heart... or just for my cravings because I'm probably more like Plagg.

the thing is, if you'd told me before v9 started that the climax of one of the episodes would include Blake pulling her weapon on her past self, I would have thought Blake was having the breakdown, not Ruby.

Yang confronting the loss of her arm and how she feels about it, Weiss confronting how she'll handle her own legacy, these are really intuitive, apples-to-apples conversations and moments of clarity that have been building up for a while. Blake's, on the other hand?

It's simple, really. You could just be human… or, just a cat. If you wanted. Really, it's up to you. Like I said, it's simple-- much simpler than trying to be a bridge between humans and Faunus. Why struggle with that responsibility? Isn't that what you want-- to be something simpler?

Nothing about her cowardice. Nothing about how she always runs away, no shame over her past mistakes, no raking herself over the coals for how she brings pain to the people she loves.

that's astonishing.

it's astonishing because of how far she's come, but it's also astonishing because of what she's embracing now. complexity, nuance, "yes, and" instead of "either/or." the bi girl, the one who passed to avoid racism at school, saying loudly and clearly, No, I can be both. It's important to be that I'm both.

the absence of Blake's formerly overwhelming self-loathing and guilt and toxic blame just keeps hitting me like a 2x4. because even though her shadow doesn't bring it up, Blake responds to it anyway-- "I belong to them just as much as they belong to me." she no longer is framing herself as a burden or a leech or a selfish monster; she knows she's GIVING as much as she's TAKING, that she's wanted and that she's good enough.
