The Silver Age-version of the Legion of Substitute Heroes. The artist is unknown to me, but that looks like a Jack Abel ink job.
Polar Boy, leader of the Subs, would later go on to becoming a full-fledged member of the Legion of Super-Heroes.

July 1983. Accidentally transported to the 30th Century, Ambush Bug runs amok in the Superman Museum as the Legion of Substitute Heroes tries and fails to stop him. The ridiculous thing about the above exchange from DC COMICS PRESENTS #59 (which has been stuck in my head for years) is that it's not even a joke: The girl with the antennae is Infectious Lass (Drura Sehpt of Somahtur), and that really is her power, as explained in her first appearance in 1974:
Not the hero we need, surely, but perhaps the hero we deserve.

Anybody remember the L'il Subs? Actually, they were just some kids getting a tour of the Legion HQ. Doro stands in for Calamity King, and wears his traditional green. There are kid versions of Night Girl, Color Kid, Antennae Boy, Infectious Lass, and Porcupine Pete. From Legends of the Legion #2 by Jeffrey Moy, and W.C. Carani.

On this day in 1985, DC published Legion of Substitute Heroes Special #1 by Paul Levitz, Keith Giffen and Karl Kesel. The comic featured Polar Boy, Color Kid, Stone Boy, Fire Lad and the rest of the rejected Legion of Super-Heroes candidates battling Pulsar Stargrave, who was well above their weight class.

Superman does not often get openly frustrated with his comrades, he tries to be patient and mentorly to the best of his ability.
But he is not possessed of super patience, just the normal kind.

John Byrne drew a series of pictures re-creating what it was like reading the Legion of Super-Heroes in Adventure Comics.
Here are the founding members - Cosmic Boy, Lightning Lad, and Saturn Girl - along with Triplicate Girl and Superboy.
Next we have Chemical King, Timber Wolf, Light Lass, Ultra Boy, and Phantom Girl.
Here are Matter-Eater Lad, Karate Kid, Princess Projectra, Brainiac 5, and Supergirl.
Chameleon Boy, Sun Boy (careful, bub; she has a boyfriend!), Shrinking Violet, Element Lad, Bouncing Boy, and Invisible Kid.
Rounding out the final group of the Silver Age LSH are Colossal Boy, Star Boy, Dream Girl, Mon-El, and Shadow Lass.
Next we have the Silver Age members of the Legion of Substitute Heroes: Chlorophyll Kid, Stone Boy, Fire Lad (hey, man, that’s Cosmic Boy’s gal!), Night Girl, Polar Boy, and Color Kid.
Finally, we have the folks who were made Honorary Legionnaires: Rond Vidar, Pete Ross, Lana Lang (as Insect Queen), Jimmy Olsen (as Elastic Lad), and Kid Psycho.
I’m kinda bummed that Byrne didn’t include the Legion of Super-Pets, but that can always be a project for another day.
