My aversion to the one ship has never been about what characters deserve, because everyone deserves love and understanding and for people to be there to support them, to have a person. Suffering more or less doesn't make that any more or less true.

My aversion to that ship has been about what the characters are capable of giving - and since acowar came out almost four years ago, I've known that Az just is not capable of giving anyone a healthy, mutually supportive relationship. He just doesn't have it in him right now. Eventually, maybe. But even when you take away the mating bond, when you take away who has suffered what and who "deserves" what because of that, Az is in no place for a long-term, loving, healthy relationship.

And tbh, I'm glad that sjm made that clear in the Az short story. I saw hints of Tamlin, I saw his rage that made Mor, the woman he supposedly loved and the woman he viewed at the very least as part of his family, literally cower in fear. I saw the hints that he refused to deal with his reality, that he often acted in the interests of what was pragmatic, rather than what was empathetic, though it was mistaken for kindness. And that chapter? It verified that and then made it ten times worse, imho.

Now if people want to keep shipping it, idgaf. People can ship what they want, whether it's healthy or not, whether it's canon or not. Let's just not... pretend that it's romantic or healthy in any way. Embrace it for what it is, if you must.

I used to be quite neutral about who Elain ended up with but this book really showed me that Elucien is the relationship with the most potential. I think Lucien right now is the only guy in Elain's life who would be frank with her while remaining respectful and Elain can actually develop into an independent and active person. She talks about wanting to help but her family and the IC is shielding her and will continue to shield her so her only chance of becoming proactive lies with Lucien.

Yes, and that’s exactly what she needs! She needs someone to be honest with her, to stop handling her with kid gloves and let her breathe and be her own person, for once in her life! This has been a constant theme with elucien shippers since forever.

The feysand short just emphasizes that. As does her fight with Nesta in chapter 21. Although, re: the IC, I do think that with Feyre realizing how their shielding Elain has had potentially harmful effects, maybe they will learn to let her be herself. I actually have a tooooooon of thoughts about emotional labor and Elain now, the way she has minimized herself in order to make others comfortable.

I mean really, everything I’ve read so far emphasizes why elucien is a good ship in terms of being healthy and growth and independence, etc. The more we learn about Elain the more we know what kind of person she needs to be with, and the more we learn about Az, the more we see that he isn’t it. Again - if people are looking for a HEA, growth, healing type ship, and of course there are other kinds. But we know which of those sjm writes as endgame.

Like I said in the other post, people can still ship e/riel, but just do it with eyes wide open and don’t pretend it’s not a bit unhealthy and potentially abusive at this point. You think Az doesn’t recognize Elain’s shrinking violet routine for what it is? He’s been working her since acowar. At first I just thought it was because he’s loyal to Rhys, and that loyalty extends to Elain by way of Feyre, but... now I feel like it’s worse.

Okay after finishing the book and rereading the Az thing, he literally just thinks about having sex with her the one time as being enough, Elain just leaves his present lying around, he takes it back and flirts with Gwyn (who doesn’t deserve his bs either), and then like... moves on to thinking about how pretty she is instead?? He feels like he deserves to be with Elain because of...... fucking symmetry??? Like? But only for the one fuck, and only until someone else pretty and flirty comes along.

Think about how either nessian or feysand talk/think about one another. Yeah they’re horny but they also admire each other’s strength, or loyalty, or kindness, or willingness to sacrifice for others, etc. I didn’t see any of that here. It could come with time, yeah, but even in wings and embers Cassian was like “holy shit, this woman”, not “holy shit, boobs”. Or not *just* “holy shit, boobs”.

Rhys has noted before that Az has a cold rage, Cassian noted that his competitiveness is cruel, he is starting to outright refuse the orders that Rhys, his High Lord and “brother”, gives him, he blew up in acowar, he hasn’t dealt with his feeling for Mor. Yes, I see him as a Tamlin 2.0, getting pissed when he doesn’t get his way, feeling like he is “owed” a woman. Obviously they have differences but every red flag that was there in acotar with Tam is there now with Az.

I just...... this has nothing to do with a ship war or whatever, cuz of all the couples elucien is not my fave, it’s probably the last one I think of before I start thinking about non-canon ships, but I literally cannot ship this guy with anyone. Not Elain, not Gwyn, no. I cannot. Even if one of them became canon I’d be highly skeptical. And I’m not arguing for or against any particular ship becoming canon, this is 100% about what I would or would not enjoy reading. What will or won’t be canon is a completely different argument.

I'm halfway through and just waiting for Nesta and Mor to start getting along because the library is a wonderful place for Nesta to be and Mor created and maintained the library so what's the holdup here

Yes they have been horrible to each other but come on, that's practically Nesta's #1 personality trait and we know that Mor will be fine once she sees that Nesta won't treat Cass like crap.

Also I'd LOVE IT if the fandom would not rehash Nesta V. Mor (2021 version).

Omfg yes Cassian, please tell Rhys to mind his own gd business when it comes to the Archeron sisters.

Rhys pissed me off in acofas when he wouldn’t respect Feyre’s decisions in how to deal with her family, and he’s not being any better now.

So thank you, Cassian. Idgaf how protective of Feyre Rhys feels, it’s not his damn business, how to treat or handle Nesta and Elain. Feyre may be his family, but that doesn't mean he gets to decide how the sisters should be dealt with our how/if their relationships get repaired.

Whatever Feyre decides, Rhys needs to be 10000% behind, supporting that. Because his anger doesn't matter, not when it comes to Feyre's family, to her history.

Thoughts on part 1

Okay so far, I'm loving Nesta's journey. I am 100% here for it. I love this thread that is running through, extend your hand and wait for her to take it. It's such a perfect metaphor for the way that Feyre & Co. have behaved so far. They have tried and tried, Nesta has smacked their hands away, they keep extending, and now Nesta has to experience the same thing with the priestesses. Sometimes her family gets gd tired of holding at their hands and they pull back, but you can't blame them. This isn't about sides, and it's not about who is wrong or right. Family is freaking messy, but they still love one another anyway.

I gotta say that I also appreciate that Nesta is having that experience of wanting to help unwilling people with the priestesses and not the Illyrian women because I didn't want her going in there all white-savior-y.

I do have to say that I hate the way Nesta (or sjm) conflates alcohol and sex and music. One of those things is... not like the other? People don't go to rehab for music addiction. It's not possible to use music as a coping mechanism to the point where it harms your physically or emotionally. This makes me think that Nesta isn't actually addicted, she's just dabbling in self-harm. That doesn't mean that she isn't hurting, or that her self-destruction isn't real or that she isn't actually hurting herself, but she hasn't dipped to the point where she has become dependent on sex or alcohol to get through the day. Which is... an entirely different story, and one I suppose we aren't getting.

(I think that would make her and Cassian sleeping together way too tricky. It'd be like an alcoholic who usually gets drunk on wine switching to whisky. Not helping. But it's not going that route, so shrug)

Finally, please note that where Rhys described Az as having an icy rage in acomaf, Cassian now describes his competiveness as "quiet and cruel". We done seen this coming, y'all.
