Pferde können eine Levade machen, das ist bei Pferden eine Pathosformel, die Diego Velasquez oder Jacques-Lous David auch sehr bekannt ins Bild gesetzt haben, David auch noch mit einer zweiten Geste, einer Feldherrengeste des Reiters, das ist sein berühmtes Bild von Napoleon beim Überschreiten der Alpen, von dem es fünf Versionen gibt, also für die Verhältnisse einer exklusiven Kunstwelt fast überall, zumindest in Versailles, in Paris, in Rueil-Malmaison, in Berlin und in Wien, aber natürlich nicht in der Galerie des vaterländisches Krieges im Winterpalast. Da musste Napoleon verständlicherweise draußen bleiben, er gehört zu den Loosern dieses Krieges. Und anders als in Berlin oder Wien bietet Napoleon darum in St. Petersburg bis heute wenig Identifikationspotential.

Die Pferde bieten da sogar mehr, die durften in die Galerie. In der Galerie des vaterländischen Krieges bilden die Pferde auch Pathosformeln. Wenn das, was eine Levade oder Pesade ist, skalierbar ist (und keine feste Formel), dann sieht man dort schwache oder milde, nicht stark ausgeprägte Levaden/Pesaden. Das ist vergleichbar mit Davids Pathosformel, und der Vergleich kommt dann zum dem Ergebis: Bei David stärker, hier schwächer. Wenn ich mich nicht irre, würden die Fachleute in Bezug auf das oben abgebildete Bild im Bild noch gar nicht von einer Levade oder Pesade, auch nicht in ihrem Anfangsstadium reden. Sie würden das eventuell noch als Piaffe bezeichnen. Gemeint ist mit dem Vergleich und der Skala stark/schwach nicht die Qualität des Bildes, nur der Energielevel der Pferde. Die Pferde traben und erheben sich mit den Vorderläufen schon, die Hinterläufe stehen noch fester. Es gibt hier einen Zug von Standläufen und Spielläufen, nur sind es Vierbeiner und das ganze komplizierter.

Aber ein Protokoll läuft trotz allem, also auch in den schwachen Version durch die Bilder, denn die Leute vor den Bildern fangen auch an, sogar mit vier Beinen (es braucht also zwei Leute, am besten jemanden mit Pferdeschwanz und jemanden mit Pony) diese Pathosformel nachzustellen.

Horse Girl AU (HGAU)! In which Hob busts a wild and abused centaur by the name of Dream out of the circus and attempts to earn that horse's trust. This is difficult since Dream hates humans and wants nothing to do with them. The two go on an adventure.

I post the comics in somewhat chronological order. On occasion I will jump back to add a new beat or scene I wasn't motivated to do at the time so this master post is nice for me to flesh out previous scenes or moments while still letting everyone read things sequentially. ENJOY!

Melodramatic Rearing Poses

A collection of six assorted rears, for all your fantasy/horse movie poster needs. They're just for single horses, might try some similar ones with riders in the future though. I mostly made these for cc/custom horse showcasing purposes but they probably have other uses. I designed them to look good from various angles to get a little more versatility out of them.

Regal 1 and 2 are your classic fantasy unicorn/King of the Wind type pose, they're referenced from arabians and have a "trained rear" kinda vibe

Charger 1 and 2 are more heavy/war horse oriented with some momentum behind them

Bronco is meant to have a kinda mustang-y playing-around-in-the-pasture feel

I AM REWATCHING AND HAVE CONNECTED THINGS (NCIS)

Ok ok so. Season 7 episode 4, titled “Good Cop, Bad Cop.” After Ziva is rescued by the team following a Mossad op gone wrong and her capture.

They’re interrogating her for reasons cause they didn’t know the full story of what happened before she got captured. Part of the story includes her telling her mission partner she would rather die than remove the necklace she wears, which holds a pendant of the Star of David. After they get the story, at the end of the episode, after telling someone to tell her dad that he better leave her the fuck alone, Gibbs whispers something in Ziva’s ear. We don’t hear it, we don’t know what he said. He kisses her hair, she starts fighting tears, and the scene ends. The episode ends with her becoming an agent.

Fast forward.

Season 10 episode 12, titled “Shiva.”

Ziva’s (first) departure from the show, only meant to be temporary.Tony lets her go with whispered words: “Aht lo levad.” Hebrew words, meaning “you are not alone.” This time, she smiles. Those are the words Gibbs says to her in season 7.

Fast forward more.

Season 11 episode 2, titled “Past, Present, and Future.”

Ziva’s (first) final departure from the show. Tony had gone to look for Ziva in Israel, and this time he knows she is staying there for good. He gets on the plane to go back to the States, and put his hand in his pocket, and feels something. He pulls out Ziva’s necklace.

She is truly no longer an agent, but she has grown so much. There’s a sense of comfortableness and trusting too. She said she would rather die than take it off, and now she is giving it to him. She no longer cries when she is told she is not alone, because now she knows it and really believes it.

Later, Tony puts that same necklace around the neck of their daughter.

also the establishing years are kinda wack, i just wanted them for the ~aesthetic~. sso launched in 2011 so that's why i chose that for silverglade and moorland but i could have sworn i remembered an exact date being tied to jorvik stables... but then i found something on the wiki that said it was founded in jon jarl's time so... i just picked a year after he came to jorvik? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ if any jorvik historians or lorekeepers wanna suggest something else, please do!

Their ships have been seen too often in view of his coastline of late and he needs to be prepared for whatever their intentions are.

15 February 2024: you might be the answer to the sinner in me

“Hob, are you alright?” Hob’s shoulders tighten and his spine goes ramrod straight. It is the family holiday dinner and he is out on the back patio in the cold, staring at the over-manicured hedgerows that make up one of the distant property lines. He left to have space to pull out his vape pen and take a hit because that is probably the only way that he is going to get through the night.

16 January 2024: Placebo Effect

“You should just DM him,” Desire is studying their nails, the dark red of dried blood, while reclining on a chaise in the living room of their oldest sister’s condo. “My kingdom for anything that might throw Dearest Mumsie and Popsicle off your trail for an evening. I don’t think I can endure another holiday of it.” They sprawl, letting their head loll backwards over the armrest, to look at Dream almost upside down. “What say you big brother?”

6 January 2024: show me who I am

Hob taps his fingers on the table next to the map of Northern Ireland and takes a sip from his glass of shiraz. “I think this is it. This is the plan. We’ve got it. Anyone see something we missed?” He looks around the table at each person in turn, waiting for a response.

1 January 2024: Another Song

Shunk ka-thunkszzzz. The lights in the entire loft go out. “What the FUCK?” Matthew’s voice smacks into Dream despite the thick panels of wood between them.

30 December 2023: Thoughts on the Roman Empire (and Other Pickup Lines)

“You know, I think this whole meme going around about men thinking about the Roman Empire is great!” Hob smiles at the ceiling as he leans back in his chair, balancing it on its back legs, propping his feet up on the table in the private library study room. He doesn't need to look at Morpheus to know that the grad student is giving him a withering glare, or perhaps not looking at him at all. “First off, people are discussing history! Second, some of the jokes are actually solid gold. Like I saw one that just murdered me in broad daylight. Wanna hear it?”

21 December 2023: Levade

“Oh fuck Dream,” Hob writhes in his bonds. “You said you wanted more did you not?” The centaur smirks. “I am simply acquiescing to your request.”

15 December 2023: You create me against your lips

The first time Hob sees Dream is when the latter has the audacity to enter the Morningstar's realm. He watches as the Dream King intimidates Squatterbloat into bringing him to the Palace. The demon is stupid and gullible, easily swayed, and Hob has a mind to bury his morningstar in the moron's fleshy head, but he would rather observe the visitor and his raven from the shadows.

9 December 2023: where I'm supposed to be

For all that he shares a given name with the God of Sleep, has a nickname of Dream, he has only experienced lucid dreaming rarely. Once, maybe twice, before. But. He knows he is dreaming right now.

26 November 2023: Venus conjunct Saturn

“Show me, Hob.” Dream purrs in a way he knows will make his lover shiver. “Show me how she pleasured you.” He is laid beneath Hob, who is on all fours above him, and the only cloth they have is the sheets upon their bed here in the Dreaming.

Other than 30% of those fics having titles from Maneskin lyrics... apparently I like to start with sounds or dialog. Some in medias res beginnings in there, too. Huh. Fascinating.

And, just for fun, here are the FIRST few lines paragraphs of the finished fic I have on deck, a sequel to A Change in Tactics (published in October 2022!)... (originally I was tagged in a last lines tag game by @amielot!)

“We have to stop meeting like this!” Hob laughed as he broke the barstool in his hands over the head and shoulders of another patron of the White Horse Inn. Said patron had just previously been trying to stab Hob with a shard of wine bottle so he most decidedly deserved it. Hob pulled a chunk of wood from where it had lodged in his palm and frowned at the blood that welled up there. A crash to his left stole his attention. “Ope. Watch out Lou!” Lou ducked the tankard aimed at her head with all the sliding fluid grace of one well-acquainted with being deep in her cups. She didn’t spill a single drop of her own ale as she backed around the bar and out of the Inn through the alleyway door. Lou may have been part of starting this fight, but she clearly had no intention of finishing it. Which was just fine by Hob. Lou didn’t deserve to be in hospital any more than absolutely necessary. She had enough going on, as Hob had just learned. Speaking of his mysterious friend… Hob flung his sweaty hair out of his eyes in time to watch Dream elegantly sidestep the brawler charging him like they were a pair in some courtly dance. The beautiful bastard hadn’t even moved his hands from where they were clasped at the small of his back, while his opponent had gone headlong into a wooden pillar. “This only happens when I join you here, Hob.” One loping step over the fallen man and Dream was back at Hob’s side. (Graceful twat.) “This type of violence is notably absent when you visit my Realm.” (Double the twat on that one.)

“Jacob McGavock Dickinson started his Arabian horse farm when he purchased his ancestral home, Travelers Rest, in 1929. He named the farm after the property and continued to use the name when he bought a second location on Del Rio Pike in Franklin, TN. He operated the farm at both locations until the mid-1940s when he sold both Tennessee locations. Dickinson’s Travelers Rest Arabian Horses were popular in the United States, Poland, and England. He even was the first to import an Arabian horse from Brazil. Dickinson owned several notable Arabian horses, including Antez, Nsar, Czubuthan, Bazleyd, Jedran, Gulastra, Arie, Aziza, and Hallany Mistanny. J.M Dickinson kept the name when he moved to Santa Barbara, CA, and started the T.R. Ranch in 1947. When Dickinson moved to California, his farm was considered the second largest stud behind the W. K. Kellogg Arabian Horse Ranch. 

Travelers Rest Arabian Horse farm returned to Tennessee when his daughter, Peggy Dickinson Flemming, opened an Arabian farm on her 300-acre farm in Columbia, TN. She continued the Travelers Rest bloodline through her breeding program. She would focus her career on dressage and running the Travelers Rest Riding Camp through the 1970s.

i haven't bothered to watch this video but based on the preview it seems they're saying that the hyper extended trot in dressage is abuse?

I hope we can all understand that the riding you do in video games has no real basis in reality, so I won't even touch on that beyond noting that this is what the extended trot looks like in the video game:

There is zero contact with that horse's mouth, lol. Also, not a dressage saddle. I assume it's due to the limits of what you can design in a video game. So no one should be learning how to ride dressage from a video game.

However, the hyperextended trot is not abuse, it's just a flashy thing bred into warmbloods at this point, like how hackney ponies naturally have high-stepping trots. Dressage judges love it, even though it often results in poor dressage.

Dressage is full of abuse, most notably what we call "rolkur", which is forcing a horse's face into its chest. This can actually affect their breathing and can result in the sudden "blowups" you occasionally see of horses in the dressage ring, often caused by low oxygen to the brain (thus resulting in reactivity and confusion). It's very bad!

The video actually does point this out, but for whatever reason they focus on the toe flick instead of the news headline they actually show on screen, which yes, are actual abuse and a big problem in competitive dressage.

The video does discuss rolkur. But the video game doesn't show rolkur?? This horse's head is actually high by dressage standards, not pinned to its chest at all. Why would it be, you could drive a house through the loop in this rider's reins lol.

And honestly, its extended trot looks fine. There are much worse examples of how the toe flick can result in bad dressage. With the trot, you want to see full engagement from the HIND end, which means your horse must be driving itself from the rear. This should result in a hind leg and foreleg angle that matches. See that this more or less does:

If you wanted to look at a bad example, THIS is very bad form:

Notice the angles are all out of whack. This is a horse highly engaged in the FRONT, not the behind.

There ARE highly extended trots that are still GOOD extended trots. Look at this Andalusian

The toe is UP, but that hind leg is right there with it. This horse is still driving itself from the hind. Just because the trot is animated doesn't make it bad.

this disconnect is why you'll find graphics made by classic dressage people that look like this. There is a faction of (objectively correct) dressage riders who have come to associate the toe flick with bad dressage, but it's not necessarily always true.

These issues crop up in the piaffe, as well. The piaffe is the most extreme form of collection, and with all things dressage, should be driven by the HIND end. This means that a horse is so collected, so driven by its hind legs, that it basically "sits" back on them, which is why the Lipizzaners then continue onto the Levade.

(This is not a rear; it's a dressage movement only highly trained and conditioned horses can do)

So if you don't have that hind end motoring you, you end up with a piaffe that looks like this, which is... bad.

compare it to the form of the correct piaffe, where a horse is almost "sitting down" in the back.

Also, because it's my favorite video of a piaffe, please enjoy this guy doing one backwards.

THAT is a classically trained horse; you can see the slack in the reins, so you know his head isn't cranked in. He's also a Portugese breed (Lusitano), and both Lusitanos and Andalusians have naturally animated/expressive movement that I think the warmblood world has tried to copy to mixed results (because they aren't nearly as small/compact). So you end up with toe flicks without any of the power that Andalusians/Lusitanos tend to bring with them.

However, it's not impossible to get a big horse to do proper dressage. This dude is like 18 hands. From what I can tell, he seems relaxed and happy, and his piaffes are great. The extended trot is big but still seems synced with the hind end. Notice he's not flicking his tail constantly (which can be a sign of irritation). Also, I think a lot of people seem to think a rein with contact=tight rein, but if you know what you're looking for, you can tell the difference between a cranked in rolkur rein and light contact. This guy has pretty light contact on this horse's mouth, so he's holding his head in that way because it's his natural (working) headset.
