Hello yall!
For the end-of-semester assignment in the course "Around the World in Music and Food", I made an anonymous survey about lexical-gustatory synesthesia, occurrence in non-synesthetes, and the possible differences in experiences between synesthetes to non-synesthetes.
While completing the survey you will need to listen to three different songs that are given to you, eat bland (and cooked) white rice, and answer questions about your experiences. In addition to that, you will have demographic-placing questions at the start of the survey. None of the questions are required of you, and you are free to skip questions, stop and exit the survey at any point.
This is not a survey made for scientific research, the results will not be used to conduct any scientific research, will not be forwarded or published to or by any group, organization, journal, publisher, etc. The only people seeing it are me, you (person filling in the survey), and my poor lecturer who needs to grade the paper this is made for.
Thank you so much! please answer it to the best of your abilities, this is a survey made so everyone can answer it, both synesthetes and non-synesthetes alike!
The survey is in English.
-Leo

Hey!! A quick question for fellow systems with synesthesia,
Does it effect each of you in a different way? Like, do you all get something different from it, and do some experience it in a lessened degree or higher degree than others??
We have synesthesia, but we've never thought about this, and I obviously can't remember or know what the others in our system experience. We were going to try and document it within our own system, and probably still will, but I'm curious about others as well!! Reblog or comment your responses please, preferably a reblog for further reach! 🩵

A friend and I recently learned I we something known as Lexical Gustatory Synesthesia
Tumblr media
Tbh I just thought this was an ADHD thing but no??? Sometimes I get these ‘phantom tastes’ when I hear someone speak and their words or voice ‘tastes’ like something, but I didn’t know this was a form of synesthesia and not something having to do with adhd, dam.

Finally, finally we can say: Fallen London has an official companion tea!
We’ve been very blessed to work with Friday Afternoon Tea on an official custom tea blend based on our games!
Friday Afternoon Tea is a geeky, family-owned tea company based in Seattle, USA. Owner Friday Elliott’s unique take on tea blending stems from a neurological cross-wiring known as Lexical-Gustatory Synesthesia: she experiences language (both spoken and written) and abstract concepts as distinct flavour profiles. In short, she literally tastes words and ideas. I've longed to create a tea blend for Fallen London, and as soon as I heard about her work, I was struck with a very compelling desire to know what the Neath would taste like when filtered through her remarkable talent. I’m delighted to share that after discussing and playing our games, she’s come up with something wonderfully apropos.
Love & Murder is a deep, delectable draught with a perfect balance of heady floral and dank earthy notes. The blend features puer aged tea, reishi mushroom, rose petal, linden flower and roasted dandelion root.
It’s just the thing to brew up for a long evening in with Mask of the Rose. I hope you’ll give it a try, and I’d like to thank my colleagues and the members of the community who were able to taste test it with us at our last live event!
Try some yourself!

Kinda inspired by Headcanon #204 where they all have synesthesia but now they all have different kinds of synesthesia!
Mind has lexical gustatory synesthesia (associates tastes with words), Soul has chromesthesia (associates colors with sounds (not me self-projecting onto him what are you talking about /j)), and Heart has grapheme–color synesthesia (associates colors with numbers and letters). 💙❤️💜

Anyone else have fun facts about themselves that you don’t usually share, because they sound like complete lies no one would believe?
Mine is that I have lexical-gustatory synesthesia, and the word “Jesus” has tasted like Mrs. Baird’s white bread topped with butter for as long as I can remember.

Gabriel: ADHD (Primarily Hyperactive), Dysgraphia, Dyslexia.
Zuri (Gabriel’s younger sister): Fibromyalgia, Autistic (semiverbal), Lactose Intolerance, Eczema.
Dorothy (Chica Masked Tormentor, Gabriel’s older sister): ODD (Oppositional Defiant Disorder), Anxiety, Insomnia.
Jeremy: Autistic, ADHD (Combined Type), Seasonal Affective Disorder.
Susie: ADHD (Innattentive Type), BPD, Hypochrondria.
Samantha (Susie’s fraternal twin sister): Chronic speech impediment/stutter, antisocial personality disorder, OCD, misophonia (later develops PTSD).
Fritz: ADHD (Combined Type), NPD, Narcolepsy, PTSD (due to childhood trauma/SA occurring in earlier childhood)
Charlie: Autistic (fluctuates in between semi-verbal and hyperverbal), Anemia, Atelophobia.
Plus our three favorite siblings:
Michael: Dyslexia, Synesthesia (chromesthesia and lexical-gustatory), Misophonia
Evan: Schizophrenia (Schizoaffective, accompanied by Bipolar Disorder), Autistic (goes either nonverbal or hyperverbal with a LOT of stuttering and slurring when stressed), BPD
Elizabeth: ADHD (Combined Type), Anxiety, Atelophobia (my girl have you heard of Rejection Sensitive Dysphoria being stacked on top of that? It’s the worst /gen).

i was reading your "about me" thing and saw that you have synesthesia. what form do you have? I have scent to color synesthesia.
!!!!!! hey same hat!!
I have a bunch of types: - letters and numbers -> colours and personalities - sounds -> colours - objects -> personalities (even the components of each object. every keyboard key has its own personality and I can't turn this off. its ridiculous) - taste -> shape- this isn't as intense as the others but its the same one my dad has which is pretty cool!! - I also have a form of lexical gustatory synesthesia- I will randomly taste different things for seemingly no reason!! mint gum, apple tarts, plain bread, paprika etc, even when I haven't eaten those things in weeks. No clue what causes this!! - lastly, synesthesia adjacent is my hyperphantasia. If I imagine an apple in my mind, I can feel the texture, the temperature, I can hear the sound exactly and I can see all the colours and textures in my minds eye. I can even take an imaginary bite and taste it!! crazy stuff. works for anything I imagine, wonderful for someone who's part of a system and wishes he could hug his headmates irl
thats so cool that you have scent -> colour synesthesia!! that must be an interesting experience... what colour is artificial raspberry flavour? what about smoke from a fire? fresh paint?

"What's attractive about you?"
Tumblr media
There's a soft, airy chuckle that Adrian lets out. "Adrian Friedrich Veidt? Well, I suppose there are people with Lexical–gustatory synesthesia. As for staring, I did not know that was a quality some find attractive."

Attempt to explain my internal world
The personalities: me, Billy. Dog, Lavendar, William Oliver Michael, Nate, Raven.
Means of communication: The Scoreboard. (Mental picture of a large whiteboard, presumably infinitely expanding with new additions) Notes are written down by various people when fronting when information must be shared in order to function.
Example: “talked to X at 2:30, agreed to help move house on Nov 30th. Pick up meds.”
Level of detail varies. Sometimes information is conveyed via pictures, sometimes tastes due to lexical–gustatory synesthesia. Only Raven doesn’t convey information.
I, Billy, can only speak to my experience with The Shades . Others may have the same or separate ones, I don’t know. The best way I can explain them is weathers that pass over my cognition. For the most part I voluntarily call them. The clearest ones are Silver and Porcelain. (Not personalities, as they don’t have individuality, amnesic barriers or difference from me. They are weathers I experience, like how a lake might experience frost.)
Silver is a weather, or shade, of extreme pragmatism and logic. Porcelain is a shade of deeply depersonalizing derealization. I don’t experience any others as strong or notable, though there are small ones that come and go.
There is way more but this is just what is easiest to put down in writing.

Robbie also has Lexical–gustatory synesthesia, which is a rare form of Synesthesia that allows him to [ TASTE ] words. He has been studied for a few years as he was growing up in Anthony's care to understand what it was he experiences. Over time, he's grown with the oddity and takes it in his stride. His word-tastes are mostly triggered by singular words he reads. A large sentence will be numbing to the tongue but if he reads slow enough he can taste around 70% of the words on the page… He also has the difficulty of having syllables triggering a taste, e.g.; partake "par" and "take" are two different flavors and can sometimes make him dry-heave if they are nasty ones.
This affected his reading often, thus his academic learning was hindered in his younger years. However - growing up he's learned better methods to get through those difficulties and having his mind studied with care and understanding helped him the greatest of all. Having a name and help for the condition he thought was normal in the first place.

Ikr??? Also, the most insanest of coincidences, but I. made my own synesthesia AU, because that happens EVERYTHING that catches my eye these days, and after small research(ie before I found a site listing ALL the variants of synesthesia) I settled on lexical-gustatory synesthesia for Mirabel also? I haven't really worked on a list of word flavors for her yet but still. Cool coincidence.(also bc i lack self-restraint she also has "aura" synesthesia in my AU. And is not the only synesthete)
THAT SO COOL⁉️⁉️⁉️ Glad I’m not the only one who thinks that that’s the best variation. I looked it up and there were a TON but personally I really like that one for Mirabel as well <33 idk I just though it fit, and I’m glad someone agrees 😭 and the word things I. Completely winged mine and based the family off of fruit. There’s other words and names with different flavors, but the Madrigals are all fruits because they’re so cool <33 also aura⁉️⁉️ very cash money 🥶
