silver ring things

I spent the height of purity culture enmeshed in the evangelical world at Wednesday evening youth group and Acquire the Fire revivals. We proudly wore our “Silver Ring Thing” and WWJD bracelets in a rainbow of colors as if we were proclaiming to the world that WE were on the right side of Jesus. It was a race to see who could be the purest, save themselves, and stay on the straight and narrow. Then came LifeTeen and PhatMass - both put us on the fast track to practicing exclusionary Catholicism that separated the “Actual Catholics” from the lukewarm Catholics (the ones who only claimed to be Catholic).

It separated the straight from the gay, the white from the black and brown, the rich from the poor, piety from the Gospel. Echoes of these beliefs pop up on my socials and taunt me during late nights when I think my life would be better if I just checked the message boards on PhatMass. It reads like Catholic Twitter: vile hatred in the so-called “name of the Gospel”, leaving me wondering what would happen if all that energy was channeled into creating a world where we all could thrive.

I never did get confirmed though becuase my whole family quit going to church

Unfortunately, it's more of a "do my work for me" type of thing, but I don't mind becuase she kinda has me wrapped around her finger lol

actually fair, i wish i could do that tbh my (we call our youth group/confirmation classes lifeteen, do not ask me why) leader is too much of a hardass to tolerate anything that isnt wOrsHiP tO tHe lOrD

my family hasnt been to church in like a year, i think the last time we went was before christmas last year so i have no clue why i still have to do it

DYC 2018: Truly Present Part 1

DYC weekend (February 9-11) has been amazing. I was able to encounter God a little deeper each time my Lifeteen youth group go to Atlanta and DYC. DYC took place in Richmond and each day it gets better. Friday was concert night and Connor Flanagan was the main peep. On Saturday, we had mass with His Excellency, Bishop Knestout. After that was sessions and I was able to go to all three sessions. There were a lot of options for which sessions to go to. Good thing I already picked the day before. Those sessions were over and it was social time til dinner but first we (team yellow and blue) gotta volunteer and help make meals. That event was with the Rise Against Hunger organization. We made about 17,000 meals in the 1st shift. After social and dinner, we had adoration with worship song. It is a time of prayers, praising our Lord, and seeing our Lord walk in the aisle during the procession. On our last day of DYC, we had our gender talks and Sunday Mass. We were about the last people to leave the hotel. There is going be a part 2 of this blog talking about things that our speakers talked about.

3/4/17 Confirmation Day

It’s crazy to think that 2 years ago, summer of 2015, I was just a kid who attended mass every weekend. Until I joined Lifeteen at church. I hated it. I was anti social and my mom made me sign up because I had to get confirmed. It’s a 2 year program and well throughout those two years, everything changed.

I woke up Today knowing I was getting confirmed. I was super excited, I had already bought my outfit, I had to read the 1st reading during mass, and it was a big special day I will never forget. So I arrived at church, and everyone is talking, while we waited for mass to start. The homily was the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard, I wanted to cry 3 times in mass. Twice during the mass, and once at the end because they played “Burning in My Soul” by Matt Maher, and all the teens were singing it. It brought back memories from the retreats. I then hugged my youth minister after mass and thanked her for everything, and she was happy for me, and she wanted me to become a Teen Leader for LifeTeen, which of course I’m gonna do. My family then went out to eat and we then went home. Everyone left the house and I was home alone, but I felt like I needed to cry. I was expecting 3 tears because I rarely cry, unless I’m mad. So then, I cried my heart out, I couldn’t stop crying for 40 minutes straight. I let everything out and thanked God for allowing me to receive the gift of the Holy Spirit. I kept saying sorry for being a bad person but I also wouldn’t stop thanking God. I love God so much. I can’t believe I cried. All the pain that I held in during adoration, for 2 years straight, I finally let out on the day I got confirmed. I love God, and I can’t wait to see where he takes me next.
