If it's okay could I request how the dr3 boys would react to their s/o being accidentally shrunk during one of Miu's experiments or something? I thought it would be a good opportunity for lots of fluff and protectiveness hehE
this was actually very fun to write, thank you for requesting anon!! also, i apologize if some of these scenarios sound repetitive, i wrote the ones i had instant ideas for first, and then sort of left myself stuck trying to think of something for the others that didn’t sound exactly like everything else i’d already written...
also, just for fun, i decided to write a little scenario for Miu, too! i hadn’t planned on it at first, but her involvement in this particular request made me want to write for her and i couldn’t help myself,,,, this is my first time writing an imagine-type thing for her so i can only hope i did her justice aha~
Tumblr media
warnings: a little bit of swearing
*✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚: *✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:
Shuichi Saihara
— VERY CONCERNED!!! VERY VERY CONCERNED!!!
— you’re so small!! what if you get lost?! what if someone steps on you?! what if you fall off something and die?! what if-
— you’ll have to calm him down before he gives himself an aneurysm lol
— somehow he’s more worried than you are. Miu says she’ll be able to get you back to normal in no time, so why shouldn’t you trust her? Shuichi could give you about a thousand reasons but that’s beside the point
— if it were up to him he would hold you and not let go unless he absolutely has to in order to make sure you don’t get hurt or stuck somewhere but obviously that’s unrealistic
— to an extent, it’s cute how worried he is about you, but it does get annoying from time to time
— i mean, you’re shrunk, not stupid. you know to stay away from edges of tables and other things you could fall from, not to wander off, etc.
— but as frustrating as Shuichi can be you really can’t get upset with him because dammit he’s so cute when he gets protective and you love him so so much
Rantaro Amami
— honestly he’s not super concerned at first
— he trusts you to be careful and not get yourself killed, and he trusts Miu to get you back to normal somehow, so why should he be worried?
— though he’ll still be pretty chill for the most part, he will start to be more protective of you when he starts to fully process the sheer number of tragic deaths you could succumb to in your current shrunken state
— this protectiveness takes the form of him offering you way more assistance than you need
— it’s nice that you want to help out, rantaro, but your s/o doesn’t need you to help them find something to sit on, c’mon now
— he kind of enjoys the way you literally fit right into the palm of his hands
— additionally, there’s now a very small, feral urge in the back of his mind to brush and style your hair like his sisters always used to do with their dolls
— he’ll probably never mention it, but don’t be too surprised if he all of a sudden takes a strong liking to playing with your hair once you’re back to normal
Kokichi Ouma
— did you expect him to treat this situation with the proper concern and caution it deserves? because if so i have bad news for you-
— he thinks it’s so funny how small you are
— like, so funny Miu has to physically intervene to get him to stop cracking up at your tiny form
— obviously you don’t think it’s as funny as he does
— right away he’s thinking of ways he could use your size to his advantage to mess with somebody
— at one point he decides it would be really funny to pretend he’s going to step on you which essentially translates to pretending he’s going to murder you but once you chew him out and explain to him how mean that was he actually feels really bad for upsetting you
— while he’s nowhere near as small as you are now, Kokichi is a rather petite guy, so the size difference between the two of you isn’t quite as drastic as it is between you and the taller guys
— since he’s a little less likely to accidentally smush you, he’s able to sorta cuddle you as if you were a small stuffed animal
— and btw being gently held and all snuggled up in his arms like that??? HEAVEN. LITERAL HEAVEN
Gonta Gokuhara
— if i had to choose someone who’s the least likely to accidentally get you killed while you’re shrunk, it would be Gonta
— i mean, he handles bugs that are much smaller and delicate than you are now, and if he can take such good care of them, obviously he’ll be able to take care of you no problem!
— you draw the line at him putting you in the little bug box he carries with him, though. you’re a human being, not a beetle!
— he likes to have you sit on his shoulders! they’re so broad that there’s plenty of room for you, too
— his hair is long enough for you to hang onto it to keep your balance if you need to!
— being so tiny also really puts into perspective just how gentle Gonta is
— yes, you’ve seen firsthand how he’s able to handle delicate little insects, and he’s always gentle with you, too, but being in the position of an insect in the palm of his hand, so to speak, is so much different
— you’ve never had anyone touch you with so much care, solicitude, and just pure love before and it’s honestly the most incredible feeling in the world
K1-B0
— another very concerned boy
— (s/o) is tiny???? how??? WHY??? HUH??
— at he’s pretty concerned about his knowledge of how humans work and fears he knows much less than he thought
— nobody ever told him they could shrink!!! he didn’t know humans could do that!! that’s because they can’t, kiibo, but i appreciate the concern
— once you explain what happened to him - how you were helping Miu out when her current experiment decided to malfunction and go apeshit, making you the size of a doll in the process - he’s a little less confused but also a lot more angry
— he makes sure to give Miu a thorough lecture on lab safety! he can’t have his s/o getting hurt just by being in the same room as her!!
— don’t worry, he’ll simmer down once you assure him that you’re okay!
— similar to Gonta, Kiibo is very careful with you! he knows you’re much more fragile than he is under normal circumstances, but now that you’re so little he’s even more worried about how susceptible to injury you are
— when he holds you or touches you, he does so with the utmost precision and care, as if you’re made of glass and would shatter if he laid his hands on you incorrectly
— he won’t tell you this, but he’s really looking forward to the day Miu is able to get you back to normal just so he won’t need to be so anxious about your safety anymore
— it’s hard work worrying about the person you love!!
Kaito Momota
— another one who’s probably not as phased by the situation as he should be
— but when Miu told him that she’d accidentally shrunk his s/o, he didn’t think that meant "i shrunk your s/o and don’t have a way fix it at this point in time"
— so when he realizes that now he has to help make sure you don’t, idk, die, he’s a little annoyed. not with you, though!
— i mean, technically he doesn’t *have* to help you out, but it would be a real dick move if he didn’t lol
— he lets you sit up on his shoulder, or in the pocket of his jacket!
— at first he doesn’t totally process that you’re a little more fragile than usual, so he may accidentally manhandle you from time to time
— just be sure to tell him if he’s holding you strangely, or if you’re starting to get uncomfy
— his priority is making sure you’re taken care of and he's not about to let himself of all people get in the way of that!!
Korekiyo Shinguuji
— he’s very worried about you, but he’ll try to hide it
— the last thing he wants to do is make your situation more stressful than it needs to be by fussing over you to no end
— it’s not that he doesn’t think you can take care of yourself anymore! he just doesn’t think the world is safe enough for you anymore!
— if you catch on to his anxiety and decide to question him about it, he’ll most likely go off on a tangent about how ‘humans are at the top of the food chain’ and ‘there’s a reason most predators are large and most prey is small’ and ‘in nature small creatures are naturally put in constant danger" or something
— while you may not necessarily appreciate him comparing you to a small prey animal, you know his heart is in the right place
— he just wants to protect you!!
— Kiyo has pretty large, slender hands, and you fit in his palm rather comfortably
— under normal circumstances, he’s incredibly gentle with you, and his delicacy of his touches increases tenfold now that you’re so tiny
— in a strange way, it almost feels like he handles you the same way he would handle some sort of fragile, ancient artifact that could be destroyed with just the smallest slip of the hand
— frankly, it’s a bit of an unusual sensation, albeit in a good way!! it’s nice to be touched so gently, y’know?
Ryoma Hoshi
— he’s glad to have a chance to be the tall one in the relationship... lol i’m jk... or am i?
— unlike the other guys, Ryoma doesn’t really dote on you and assume you need his help for everything, mostly because he knows firsthand what it’s like to be so much smaller than someone
— he doesn’t really like being treated like he’s helpless, or needs constant aid from taller people, so he’s mindful of the way he responds to the situation as not to end up behaving exactly like those who frustrate him to no end
— of course if you need him for anything, whether it’s helping you go from one place to another, or just wanting some love from your boyfriend, he’s always right there for you!
— however, sometimes he needs to go get someone taller than him to help you out with something, which he really Does Not Enjoy™️, so before you ask him to help you get something from up high (by your current standards, ofc) be sure to ask yourself if it really can’t wait until you’re back to normal lol
— like with Kokichi, the size difference between you and Ryoma isn’t all that drastic compared to some of the others, so he also manages to cuddle you without much issue. it’s a little awkward at first, but at least there’s no fear he might accidentally lay on top of you and squish you to death
— perks of having a boyfriend who’s 3’5", y’know?
Miu Iruma
— you’ve always enjoyed helping Miu out in her lab, and it isn’t uncommon for her to request your assistance with something, but up until now nothing has ever really... gone wrong in there, at least not majorly
— somehow, whatever shrinking device she’d been working on decided to have an absolute freak attack and target you, not the watermelon she was about to test it on, and now you’re about ten times smaller than you should be
— at least it works... right?
— she’s very apologetic and honestly feels so incredibly guilty that she could have possibly let something like this happen to you
— you’re honestly not very upset at first. she can fix it and you’ll be back to normal in no time, right? ...right?
— now is not the best time for Miu to be telling you about how she hasn’t yet developed a way to reverse the shrinking properties of her latest invention, but unfortunately she doesn’t really have another choice
— in the meantime, she takes it upon herself to whip up a few things to make your new life as a tiny person easier until she can dedicate her time to finding out how to get you back to normal
— you’re a little surprised at the sheer amount of robotic tools and gadgets provided to you that she just had laying around, as well as how quickly she’s able to throw together little devices to help you get around quicker, or reach things up high
— if there was any doubt that she was truly upset that her experimentation could have gone so wrong, it all vanishes the second she places her lips on your head (you may be small but that’s not going to stop her from kissing you!!) and says she’s never going to let herself put you in harms way ever again
— she loves you more than anything in the world, and would spend the rest of her life trying to undo the damage she caused if she had to! that’s how much you mean to her <3

Drv3 boys request. Best friend-crush reader constantly gets confessed to and hit on bcuz of their beaty and very admirable personality, but alway declines(cuz they like the boys). The boys want to ask out reader but is scared they’ll reject them like the others and it would ruin their friendship. How would they react when reader suddenly makes a big romantic gesture and ask them out instead?
I didn't expect the last part of this ask Aaaa that's amazing.
V3 boys with a crush that constantly gets confessed to... That confesses to them!
Ryoma Hoshi
Do you really think that he even thought of confessing to you? All those people he witnessed confessing to you made you extremely uncomfortable.
So there's no way that he's going to say it and be another person on this list. He's perfectly fine being your close friend. Actually it's more than enough.
It's a bit funny really. He doubts any possible feelings you may or may not have for him while you reject everyone just to be with him.
But it's not like he thought it'd be good for you to like him. Heck he thought that you being friends was a bit dangerous for you.
So even if you shared mutual feelings it doesn't really mean that he would accept it. There was a slight possibility that he'd reject you.
You were aware of this possibility, but you still wanted to try. You had to!
You had the flowers, the time and the place. Ryoma was a little early but it's not like you were possibly bothered by it.
He was a bit surprised to see you holding flowers but there was no way it could-
You turn towards him and give him the flowers. But the most shocking part was you asking him to date you.
He wanted to think that you're joking but he knew you weren't. His silence made you anxious.
"So... You rejected everyone because you liked me? Geez you have an odd taste kiddo" he joked still not believing it was happening "I might not deserve it but- I feel the same about you"
Gonta Gokuhara
It was a bit weird when people had the guts to confess to you while you were hanging out with him.
The fact that someone wanted to tell you something while you spend time with him didn't bother him... But the fact that it made you uncomfortable did.
So he wanted to help you. Picking less crowded places, trying to make you appear busy. He asked if you agreed for him doing so. The second you change your mind he'll stop.
But you had just the thing that would stop at least the ones that are decent and know when to back off.
And it's of course confessing to Gonta and if he likes you back your relationship will be official right away.
You didn't do it to use him obviously- you liked him for a long time and what I just said was a joke.
You wanted this to be special since he was special. You thought about your favorite places and found a perfect option.
There was a lake where you often could see lots of dragonflies. And although it's not his favorite kind of a bug this lake is one of the first special places he took you to. So it had that sentimental points.
When he showed up you decided to first have a warm conversation before you told him how you feel.
The grass was soft but not as soft as he felt when you told him this. He was overjoyed and did speak ever so slightly louder.
"Gonta would love to be with Y/N! Gonta swears to make Y/N happy everyday!"
K1B0
It took him a while to figure out his feelings... When he did things got a bit awkward for him.
He was scared to change things between you two... But he wanted things to change. He wanted to be with you, to be able to hold your hand, be the reason why you're smiling and to make you feel how he feels around you.
He didn't wanted to be like all those people saying sweet nothings out of nowhere, disturbing you and even being rude to you when you reject them.
But of course those things are something he wouldn't dare to do... He just didn't wanted you to think that he's like those people.
There was no other choice, he had to grin and bear it. With time you had realized and connected the dots that he liked you too and you couldn't be more happy.
Even though it was just a silly assumption the very thought of being with Kiibo just made your day.
Now it was time to make that thought into reality! And you had a silly plan that probably would work.
You were listening to music together- but between the songs there was one audio file of your confession.
While you cringed at the sound of your recorded voice he was shocked.
He didn't really believe what was happening so he asked if you recorded it. When you admitted to it he didn't really know how to react.
"I- uhm- I like you to. Sorry I just don't know what to say, I'm so happy!"
Kaito Momota
He was over the moon about his feelings for you actually, but he had no problem keeping it to himself.
Knowing how many people made you uncomfortable with their confessions he thought it'd be best if he waited it out and most importantly respect and ask what your feelings are in the first place.
He didn't really think when he asked if you liked anyone. But as he found out that yes, there was someone he was ready to support you.
Although he'd be lying if he said he wasn't jealous... Or angry about the fact that you won't tell him who you like.
He'd try to guess but he couldn't. At that point he thought that he did guess at one point and you just said no anyways.
You knew that with him you had to be straightforward. Of course he probably would be able to tell your intentions but it'd be ideal to let him know without having to worry if he thinks it's platonic.
So you were ready for anything even to bluntly correct him.
When you were hanging out he noticed that you were acting a bit differently and he thought it was becouse he was forcing you to tell him who do you like so you're trying to be cautious around him.
So he apologized for that and ended up giving a few hints that he might like you back.
It gave you some confidence boost so you had a perfect opportunity to strike, and that's exactly what you did.
"What!? It was me all that time!?... You could've just said so. I was worried that I'll never get to tell you how I feel"
Shuichi Saihara
He tried to pay no attention to all those people who declare their love to you. Some were flashy with their confession while some just told you about their feelings.
He was a bit jealous over all those admirers... Not because you had so many. It was because he wished to be as brave as them and tell you how he feels.
But it's not like he could easily admit to it himself. He just didn't know what to say and with each admirer he became more and more scared.
One day he just asked- okay more just blurted out the question if you liked someone.
You weren't lying when you said yes, but you needed some time before you tell him you-know-what.
So his any interest to confess to you was out of the window. But he prepared himself to support you and your future partner.
His question prompted you to step up and finally confess. Since he's definitely going to start guessing.
That was what you assumed, Shuichi didn't actually want to know who you fell for. He only "knew" that it wasn't him.
You decided to confess in a bit risky way. What I mean is: you left a confession letter inside a novel you let him borrow. It could fall out at any time!
You were worried this might happen but soon enough you got a message from him.
He would call you and thought a lot about doing so but he knew he'd be at loss of words so he just decided to text you instead.
"Do you really like me?" this was a sign that he did in fact get your letter.
After that you texted for a while but as to his feelings for you, he decided that he'll try to tell you in person.
Rantaro Amami
He never paid much attention to his feelings. So even when he realized that he's in love he knew he shouldn't say anything.
Looking how many people you rejected he thought you weren't interested in anyone at all.
Of course there were some people you considered strangers. But there were few that were close to you too.
And hey being friends with you was super fun. So why should he make things awkward by letting know how he feels?
You can't have everything in the world and for Rantaro just your smile was enough.
While he set his feelings aside you were preparing yourself to confess.
You decided to strike at a perfect time. The beautiful sight before you (other than Rantaro obviously) the warm atmosphere...
You said it. Without regrets, you couldn't stop yourself. He was a bit surprised but he didn't let you wait long for his answer.
"Hah... I don't really know what to say at a time like this... Can I kiss you instead and let it be my answer?"
Kokichi Ouma
He saw you reject people so often he swears he knows the outcome just by the look on your face. Even when you politely decline and show no signs that you'll say no he still can tell.
If someone really messes it up he's gonna joke about this later with you. He just wanted to make you laugh so you won't have to worry about it much.
You might not like the idea so much but it happened when someone crossed the line and made you feel uncomfortable so you didn't feel that bad...
And it DEFINITELY doesn't make him anxious about confessing... Impossible- he would never.
Of course he's not like those idiots who don't even know you. And in the end he can turn it into a joke if he messes it up.
But the memory would probably haunt him and not let him sleep at night, so he rathers not risking it.
So you had to make the move. It was a bit hard but you knew how to get to him. You had to wait for your "making fun of people who confessed to you" session to do that.
That's when you mentioned that you were interested in someone and now it was the best time to make things obvious.
He was ready to tease the living shit out of you and hoped you'd share the news. But you made him guess.
It was interesting to hear the names he'd assume before himself. So you spoiled the fun.
"Aww Y/N I almost got it! That's not fair" he crossed his arms "But since you're really dying to be with me I suppose I can entertain you from now on in a bit different way"
Korekiyo Shinguji
He's observant and he's pretty sure somehow he saw all of the confessions so far. Some were creative while some incredibly creepy.
He did make a joke once about you being so popular just to see your reaction. It was interesting that you rejected everyone even those he assumed you were close with.
A little tease like this can show him how you view those interactions. He wanted to know if you find it amusing or heartbreaking.
Whatever your answer was he acknowledged it and knew that from now on it'd be better to keep his feelings to himself.
He was entertained enough just being with you as you were so he didn't really care that he has to ignore his heart's call.
You were beautiful, the special kind of beauty within you was something he could witness every day. What more he could ask for?
Only if he knew what you were up to... It'd ruin the surprise!
You studied the language of flowers just so when you give him the special bouquet you'd tell him meaning of each flower.
He was of course already aware of those but since you were telling them about it he knew that it was supposed to mirror your feelings.
"To believe that I was blind to your feelings all this time... Let me make this up to you"

Think Before You Speak
A/N: This is an idea I got based off Tenko's last fte and the trans Shuichi headcanon...midwriting ti I realized it could fit my bad things happen bingo so I added it))
TW: self-doubt, unintentionally transphobia, dysphoria
Tumblr media
Shuichi couldn’t have gotten away from Tenko fast enough. He understood she didn’t mean anything by it, but he could just hear her words circling through his head.
At least Tenko hadn’t thought he was a girl...she seemed so adamant that he was a guy.
Maybe that’s why he kept hanging out with Tenko. Even if she seemed to hate males, constantly calling him a degenerate, he got a small boost of euphoria from realizing that he passed well enough for her to not realize.
Of course, that all went down the drain the second those words left Tenko’s mouth, begging him to get gender reassignment surgery.
He didn’t remember much after that. Next he was aware he was in his room, staring in the mirror.
He wasn’t sure how long he stood there, just staring before his doorbell went off, making him flinch.
Glancing at the time he realized it was already nighttime. Had he...been standing there this long?
He must have worried Kaito and Maki. He shouldn’t have done that.
Well he should probably open the door before Kaito tried to break it down again.
Shuichi opened the door, and was a little surprised to see both Maki and Kaito waiting there.
“Is everything okay,” Shucichi asked. Nothing had happened right? He hadn’t missed a body discovery announcement or anything had he? He really hoped he hadn’t.
“No one’s seen you all day and Kaito was worried,” Maki said bluntly.
Kaito sputtered slightly before quickly recovering, making Shuichi smile slightly. “What Makiroll meant to say is that we were both worried when you didn’t show up for dinner.”
Shuichi winced slightly. He hadn’t meant to worry them. “Sorry I guess I just lost track of time.”
Shuichi thought that would please them but Maki just gave him a look. “What happened?”
“Nothing happened I’m f-,” Shuichi tried to lie.
“Bullshit.”
Shuichi flinched slightly, he hadn’t expected Maki to see right through his lie like that.
“Maybe don’t be so harsh Makiroll,” Kaito suggested, “I’m sure my lovely sidekick had a reason for not telling the truth.”
Immediately Shuichi felt guilty. He really shouldn’t have lied to them. Even if he wanted to make sure they didn’t worry about him, was lying to them really worth it?
“Earth to sidekick,” Kaito called, “You still with us?”
Shuichi flinched slightly. “Oh sorry about that.”
“You don’t need to apologize for everything Shuichi,” Maki interrupted.
“S-,” Shuicihi stopped himself before apologizing again, “You’re right.”
“So, you mind telling us what happened?”
“So I was hanging out with Tenko and-,” he was quickly interrupted by Kaito.
“Huh never thought you’d be hanging around Tenko.”
Shuichi flushed slightly, understanding what Kaito meant. Most of the guys didn’t spend a lot of time around Tenko, between her calling them degenerates or chasing them off with Neo-Akido. It probably didn’t make much sense that he was hanging around her much.
Maki quickly swatted Kaito, knocking Shuichi out of his thoughts again. “Let him finish.”
“Well a-anyways everything was going okay, u-until she practically begged me to get gender assignment surgery.”
Maki immediately turned from the door. “I’ll be back.”
Kaito grabbed her hand and pulled her back. “Maki, you can’t murder Tenko for hurting Shuichi.”
“Who said I was going to go after Tenko.”
Kaito just gave Maki a look, and Shuicihi almost had to hold back a laugh.
“....I wasn’t going to murder her.”
“Still not risking that Makiroll.”
Maki huffed a bit but listened. Good for Tenko too because Shuichi knew Maki might have done something.
After knowing Maki wasn’t about to go attack Tenko, Kaito turned back to Shuichi.
“1 to 10?”
Shuichi glanced up, hearing their familiar system. It was an easy way for any of them to talk about their feelings without having to go too in depth.
Shuichi hesitated before responding. “....between 6 and 8.”
“Well I guess we’re skipping training tonight then,” Kaito said.
“What, we don’t need to-,”
“Shuichi,” Maki interrupted, “I think we can all agree that you won’t do your best if you tried to train tonight.”
“That doesn’t mean you two have to skip training for me.”
“We may not have to, but we want to.”
Shuichi wasn’t used to people putting things aside for him because he was feeling down. So maybe that’s why Kaito telling him that hit so hard.
Maybe that’s why the next he realized he was sobbing into Kaito’s chest as Kaito and Maki comforted him. Even as he pushed away and they chatted until it was almost too late for them to go back to their rooms, he still felt the warmth he got from hanging out with them.
As Kaito and Maki left to head to bed, he realized that maybe….just because there were people like Tenko who preferred him how he wasn’t, there’d always be people like Kaito and Maki, who prefer him how he is.

🍬Candy Kingdom🍭
Make sure to look at the designs JJ made! (With some of mine!) It’s under the tag Candy Kingdom!
- 6 -
After basically chasing Ouma around for what felt like hours, he finally caught up to him and managed to slow him down. While Shuichi was struggling to breathe properly, Kokichi kept going on about how he could keep running for hours on end without getting tired. Though, he ended up helping him breathe properly once he realized he was still wheezing.
“Saihara-chan, you okay now?” He asked, his voice softer than usual. Shuichi nodded, glancing at the other boy. “Good!” Kokichi jumped up and grabbed his hand. “Well c'mon! We can’t sit here all day!” He grinned again, squeezing his hand a little too tightly.
“Just,” he paused, taking a few deep breaths, “No more running around, okay?” Shuichi asked warily, squeezing back without a second thought.
Kokichi pouted, gently kicking Saihara’s ankle. “Why? Are you already tired? Are you Saihara-chan? Huh?” He asked, getting closer to his face.
“Yes, I’m tired. I don’t know how you aren’t,” He murmured, gently pushing him away. Ouma stuck his tongue out at him, letting go of his hand.
“It’s because I spend all my time running away from the guards!”
“Really?” Saihara asked, astonishment seeping into his voice. “Yep! I cause allll sorts of trouble just to inconvenience them!” He chirped, placing a hand on his chest.
“All by yourself?” He tilted his head, biting the inside of his cheek. Kokichi stared at him for a moment before smiling and poking his cheek.
“Welll, I have an organization with 10,000 members! So you can imagine how much help I can get.”
“Is that a lie?“
Kokichi stared at him for a moment before laughing. "Wow! Saihara-chan’s catching on quick!” He chirped, a sly grin on his face. “That’s good,” He murmured, fondly smiling at the other boy. He just giggled and skipped away, leaving Saihara to chase after him again.
Luckily, Kokichi skidded to a stop once he arrived in front of a large shop. Shuichi was still a bit out of breath, though he tried to not show it. He had a feeling the other would tease him about being unathletic. It wasn’t exactly his fault. He would often get in trouble for running in the castle, and after a few lectures he gave up. Though, it did bring up some fond memories of playing tag with his older sister. (And being chased around by her while he screamed in pure fear. He obviously didn’t enjoy it as much as she did, but he was glad he had more memories with her. They didn’t talk as much once they got older, after all.)
Kokichi suddenly yanked him forward and dragged him into the shop. Saihara let the other boy drag him around aimlessly, not knowing where he would go. He was pretty much never allowed outside the grounds of the palace, seeing as his father would always worry he would get hurt or lost. At some point, they let him explore a bit with a guard following him around. He didn’t end up doing much though, he got too nervous around them due to their serious personality and just asked to go back home.
When he stopped day dreaming he noticed Kokichi glanced around him before grabbing something and slipping it into his pocket. After that, he went back to looking around, easily playing it off. After a second, Shuichi whispered to him, “Why’d you do that?” From what he saw, it wasn’t anything valuable. It was just a small bag of some sort of cookies, and it didn’t look too expensive. Ouma could’ve just asked Saihara to buy it for him.
Kokichi just grinned at him and pressed a finger to his lips, obviously telling the other to keep quiet about it. Shuichi just looked away, a nervous smile on his face. He quietly giggled, grabbing his arm and dragging him to another isle. After roaming around for a few minutes, they ended up leaving empty handed. After walking away from the store, he pulled the bag out of his pocket and tossed it from hand to hand, grinning.
“I could’ve bought it for you,” Saihara muttered, a small frown on his face.
“Yeah, but my many subordinates can only eat food that wasn’t paid for! It’s a tragedy, really,” Kokichi had tears in the corners of his eyes and sloppily wiped them away. “I’m sure that’s a lie. Ouma-kun, you shouldn’t do that. You could get into lots of trouble,” He stated. He made sure to be polite but firm, knowing Ouma could easily change the direction of the conversation if he wanted to.
“Jeez, you sound like a guard Saihara-chan,” he rolled his eyes, beginning to twirl a strand of his hair.
“I’m just trying to look out for you,” Shuichi quietly sighed, gently covering his mouth.
“Well, you don’t need to! I’m perfectly capable of looking out for myself, promise!” Kokichi’s voice was playful as usual, but he had a certain edge in his eyes, telling Saihara to drop the topic.
“If you say so,” Shuichi pulled at his sleeve, feeling the tension he created. He was worried that they would continue walking in silence, though his worries quickly diminished when Ouma spoke up again. “Saihara-chan! You should meet more of friends!” He said in lighthearted tone, grinning at him. “Your friends are very..” Shuichi paused for a second, making a few hand gestures. “Unique.”
“Oh? Does Saihara-chan not like my friends?” Kokichi feigned a shocked expression, barely supressing a grin.
“It’s not that! They’re just very different from people I know,” Shuichi nervously laughed and looked away.
“What kind of people are you used to then?” He asked, tilting his head. Saihara paused for a moment, choosing his words carefully. “They’re very serious and formal.”
He expected the other to question it, but Kokichi just nodded and continued walking. It was quiet except for the gravel crunching beneath his shoes. They were starting to become uncomfortable at this point, he was almost constantly wearing them and was walking around a lot more than usual. He was usually in his room reading detective novels.
It reminded him of his uncle, that was part of the reason he read them so often. He couldn’t remember his face anymore, the last time he saw him was so long ago. He was a detective, and he influenced Shuichi a lot. So much in fact, that he told his parents he wanted to be a detective like him. When they heard that, they swiftly took him away from his uncle, and he hasn’t seen him since.
He doesn’t tell his parents much after that.
“Hey, Saihara-chan, you’re spacing out again,” Kokichi had a small pout on his face. He assumed he had snapped in front of his face, seeing as his hand was directly in front of him.
“Ah, I’m sorry,” Shuichi would always have to apologize when he did that at home, so it became a habit at this point.
“It’s okay! I’m used to it by now!” He giggled mischievously, poking Shuichi’s chest.
Before Saihara could even think of a response to that, the other clapped his hands and smiled at him. “Anyhow, we’re gonna go meet up with a few more friends! Then we can do whatever your emo heart desires!” Kokichi chirped, rocking back and forth on his feet. Shuichi decided not to protest and just nodded, causing the other to cheer and drag him somewhere else.
Ouma was holding onto his hand again and was speed walking somewhere. He was swinging their arms back and forth. He was talking about his organization and how he could order them to do anything at the blink of an eye. It went on like this for a few minutes, until he arrived in front of a group of small houses.
Kokichi let go of his hand and started banging his fist on the door. Shuichi was going to say something at first, but decided against it. A string of curses was heard before the door swung open, revealing someone with purple hair that stuck up. (He still wasn’t exactly sure how that worked.)
He looked like he was about to yell at Ouma, but his agitated expression quickly disappeared when he noticed someone was standing beside him. “Hiya Momota-chan! I brought a friend with me this time!” Kokichi grabbed Saihara by his shoulders and gently shook him, earning a confused look from the other boy.
“Hey! Name’s Kaito Momota! Sorry you had to deal with him for a while,” He stated, motioning towards an offended-looking Kokichi. “Don’t act like I’m a pest! It hurts my feelings, you bully!” He started wailing, drawing attention to them all.
“C'mon, you’re causing a scene!” Kaito complained, flicking his forehead. That only caused Ouma to scream and cry even louder.
“Ouma kun, please stop crying,” Shuichi murmured, gently nudging the other boy.
“Finally someone asks nicely. I was gonna pass out from dehydration because of all of those precious tears lost,” He complained, looking at his nails. Kaito just sighed and turned towards Saihara a welcoming smile on his face.
“I never got your name, what was it?”
“Oh! My name’s Shuichi Saihara,” He said sheepishly, feeling a bit embarrassed he had forgotten to say his name.
“It’s nice to meet ya Saihara!” He exclaimed, patting (more like hitting,) Saihara’s back. Kokichi stared at Momota for a second before trying to walk past him. Kaito let him, but not before saying, “You’re supposed to ask before coming inside, dumbass.”
Kaito moved to the side and let Shuichi walk in. He was surprised to see the house was filled with talking people, who he assumed were friends and family. He quickly followed Ouma, not eager on being alone. Kokichi looked over his shoulder and grabbed his arm, grinning at him. He pushed him into the kitchen, which only had a few people in. Ouma tossed Saihara a bag of sweets before grabbing one for himself.
“Isn’t Momota-chan nice? He stocks his pantry full of sweets for me, you know!” Kokichi stated, chewing on a piece of candy. “But that’s a lie. They’re still tasty though,” He giggled to himself. Shuichi just fidgeted with the small bag, moving closer to the other boy. Ouma gently nudged him, tilting his head. “Oh, I’m just not a huge fan of sweets,” Saihara murmured, nervously laughing.
“Really?” Kokichi tilted his head. “Yeah, so you can have it,” He murmured, motioning to the bag of candy. “If you say so!” He chirped, snatching the bag from him and slipping it into his pocket. Saihara chuckled at the other, covering his mouth. Kaito strolled into the kitchen, perking up at the sight of the two boys.
“Hey, Saihara!” He waved at them, an energetic smile on his face. “So, you new around here? Small town, practically know everyone here,” He stated, giving a thumbs up. Before Shuichi could start panicking, he said the first thing that came to his mind. “I live pretty far, I just got lost and ended up here,” Kokichi stared at him for a second before grinning. “Yep! I found poor Saihara-chan all alone! If it weren’t for me he’d probably be dead!” He exclaimed dramatically, putting a hand on his chest.
“I’m sure he would’ve been fine without your help Ouma,” Kaito stated, a small frown on his face. “C'mon you dont have to be so mean to me!” He whined, tears in the corner of his eyes.
“I’m not being mean!” He exclaimed, a bewildered expression on his face.
“Yes you are! Isn’t he being cruel Saihara-chan?!” Kokichi turned towards Saihara, a small pout on his face.
Shuichi was quiet for a moment, genuinely thinking it over. “Well, I don’t think Momota’s intention was to be rude. Though, I’m not sure I would’ve been able to get out safely without your help,” Kokichi was quiet for a moment before sighing dramatically, deflating.
“I guess. I’m still right though,” He murmured, crossing his arms.
“Whatever helps you sleep at night,” was all Kaito said, a fond smile on his face.
“I’ll have you know I sleep soundly on a mattress filled with the softest stuff around,” Kokichi stated. Before Momota could even respond to that, he continued, “My organization with over 10,000 members only give me the best!” Kokichi pressed a finger to his lips, a mischievous expression on his face.
“That’s gotta be a lie,” Kaito muttered, looking a bit agitated.
“Maybe you’d know if you were, you know, less stupid.”
“You shouldn’t call people stupid Ouma-kun,” Saihara chided, hearing him whine. Kokichi just pouted and started messing with a colorful bandaid on his finger, seemingly looking bored.
“How come you never listen to me when I tell you that?” Kaito asked, frowning.
“Because I don’t listen to idiots,” Shuichi lightly glared at the other, gently nudging him.
“Stop calling me that! It hurts my feelings, you know!”
“Okay, I’m sorry,” Kokichi muttered, but not before kicking Momota in the ankle. “I appreciate it,” Kaito said sarcastically, being able to tell he was lying. Still, he ruffled Ouma’s hair, earning a surprised squawk and a slap on the hand. Shuichi quietly giggled, causing Kokichi to half-heartedly glare at him. “The sun’s setting, do you two wanna stay here for the night? I don’t need you two getting in trouble for staying out past curfew.”
“Curfew? What’re you talking about?” Saihara asked, slightly tilting his head. “Yeah, they made that a rule recently because of crime rates or whatever. It sucks, but we don’t really get a say in it,” Kaito sighed, rubbing the back of his neck. “Usually I would say no, but because Saihara-chan is such a rule follower, I don’t see why not,” Kokichi stated, obviously thinking of when he took that practically worthless bag of cookies.
Shuichi quietly sighed, gently pinching the bridge of his nose. “If you’re fine with us staying, I’d appreciate it,” Kaito pat his shoulder, a smile on his face. “Don’t worry about it! You can make up for it by training with me tomorrow morning!” Kokichi grinned at Saihara, shaking his arm excitedly. “It’s mostly just some simple work outs. Trust me, it’ll help at some point! Especially if you’re chasing him for whatever reason,” Kaito motioned to Ouma and grimaced, seeming to remember something.
“You’re just salty about the fact I came up with a genius prank,” Kokichi sing songed, grabbing a blanket off the couch.
“Said prank was taping firecrackers to my toilet seat,” Kaito muttered, loudly sighing.
“He what?” Shuichi turned towards a grinning Ouma. “It was hilarious! Not only did he chase me around for like, ten minutes, he also-”
He was cut off by Kaito throwing a pillow at him. “You’re sleeping on the couch for that. Ouma, show him the guest room, I am not going to bed angry. Goodnight you two,” Kaito disappeared into his room.
“Well, follow me Saihara chan!” Kokichi dropped his stack of pillows and blankets onto the couch and lead Saihara to another room. “This is where you’ll sleep. Maybe forever if I decide to kill you!”
Shuichi quietly laughed, feeling fatigue settle in. “Whatever you say Ouma-kun,” he said, yawning into his hand.
“Hey! You should be more scared, you know,” Kokichi’s voice was quieter than before.
“Maybe, but I’m tired and just want to sleep right now,” Saihara lazily pat the other boy’s head. Kokichi just pouted and crossed his arms. “Since I’m so nice, I guess you can go to sleep. Night Saihara chan!”
Shuichi closed the door and laid down, finally letting exhaustion take over.
And of course, he woke up tightly wrapped in blankets with a small note that read, “I decided not to kill you, maybe next time Saihara-chan!” -D.A

‘Stupid stupid stupid stupid stupid STUPID.....I’m so fucking stupid’ why did I have to fall for him of all people, the boy who very obviously likes someone else and that somebody else clearly reciprocates them; it’s only a matter of time until either of them confesses and then their perfect love story would start, it was destined to be.....so why did this have to happen? This horrible tight feeling in your chest, the cuts that were littered through out your esophagus and mouth, the awful myriad of vibrant rose petals and fully bloomed ones accompanied by their thorny stems which were stained pink with blood.
It all started when you lost your sweater, running around the school searching like a mad man for it. That’s when you quite literally ran into the poor detective, you two were in the same grade and shared a few classes, you even sat behind him in homeroom but never really talked outside of the usual formalities, that was understandable due to your somewhat questionable reputation; so maybe caging him beneath you in the middle of a hallway wasn’t the best outside of class introduction. You very quickly got off him apologizing profusely, when you saw his bright red face only one word came to mind ‘cute’. You helped him get off the ground, remembering about your missing sweater you decide to ask if he’s seen it. “Hey Shuichi, you wouldn’t have happened to see a (F/C) sweater anywhere have you?” he took a second to respond “No I haven’t seen one, sorry” “It’s ok don’t worry about it, besides I’m the one who lost it” trying to sound as reassuring as possible.
“Well...I better get back on the hunt-” but before you could say goodbye he interrupted you “I-I can help you look for it if you want?” “Well I guess having another pair of eyes isn’t bad, plus you’re the Ultimate Detective right?” “Y-yeah.” you started walking down the hallway without warning. He followed after you quickly like a lost puppy, both of you walk into various classrooms getting more and more disheartened when you didn’t find it. That’s when it hits you “I think I might know where it is. But you can’t tell anybody about where this place is, ok?” he looked rather hesitant but curiosity got the better of him “S-sure.” You waved for him to follow you and he did, as you walked towards the back of the school he started to get nervous “H-hey isn’t this the area where M-Mondo and his g-gang hang out in?” “Yes but there’s no need to worry...unless you need or want to leave then please feel free to go, you’ve already helped me a ton today.” You looked back at him with a reassuring smile “N-no...I’ll keep looking with you.” You just kept walking until you stopped in front of a door with the Crazy Diamonds logo on it, Shuichi just stared at the door with wide eyes. Before he could ask any questions you knocked on the metal door, a little window slides open “Heey (Y/N)!” “Heeey Ryuji!” but before he opened the door fully he saw Shuichi who was hiding behind you. “Who’s the runt?” “Don’t worry he’s with me.” you gently pulled him next to you. “...Alright, but he better not snitch.” “I made sure he wouldn’t.” You smlied at Ryuji as he opened the door to let you both in.
You leaned into him and whispered “Stay close.” he nodded and did just that. It was a rather large room with bikers and delinquents alike entertaining themselves, they had turned an abandoned storage area into a rather nice rec room. As the two of you walked towards the back of the room, you noticed how Shuichi was being jostled around. You snake an arm around his waist and pull him close to you “Sorry, but it wouldn’t be good if you got injured somehow because of me.” leaning in to whisper that in his ear, an extreme blush burned across his face “I-It’s ok.” You just tried to quicken the pace so you could let him go from your hold although for some reason you really didn’t want to. Once you reached the back you turned into a dark hallway with a door near the end, when you reached the door you knocked on it. He could hear shuffling from inside when all of a sudden the door swung open, causing him to jump a bit. Standing in front them was the Ultimate Biker Gang Leader, Mondo Owada “WHO THE FU-(Y/N)!?” his demeanor did a complete 180. The anger on his face melted off and his voice lost it’s gruffness “What are you doing here kid? You rarely ever come here after school.” before you could answer him, he looked over and saw Shuichi. He was shaking like a leaf when Mondo’s sharp gaze landed on him. “Who-” your arm was still wrapped around his waist, holding him close to you, this did not get past his sharp eyes “Heeeeyyyy! Did you come here to tell me that you finally got a piece of ass! Congrats kid!” he pat your shoulder as if you’d won an award. You stood there silent from shock, sure you thought Shuichi was incredibly smart and extremely pretty even while he turned into a tomato right next to you. Your grip around him subconsciously tightened, when you finally shook off the shock. You were about to correct him and ask if you left your sweater here, but as usual you were cut off.
“Hey! That’s a very unwholesome thing to say! Especially to underclassmen, we’ve got to be a good example to them!” Taka marched up to the door and stood next to Mondo his face resembled that of an angry disapproving mother. He looked over to you and Shuichi “Hello (Y/N)!” “Hey Taka.” he stuck his hand out towards Shuichi “You must be (Y/N)’s boyfriend! What’s your name, are you an ultimate as well?” Shuichi hesitantly shook his hand “Uhhh...m-my name is Sh-Shuichi Saihara, I’m the Ultimate D-Detective.” he was clearly nervous and didn’t want to possibly upset them by correcting their assumption, at least that’s what you thought with the way he leaned further into you. Mondo started to chuckle a bit “Wow kid you’re more like me than I thought.” “What do you mean?” quirking an eyebrow at him “We’re both delinquents and are dating a goody two shoes.” “We’re not date-ing!” your voice cracked hard but you continued anyways “We’re just friends.” Mondo stared at you a bit before chuckling again the smile on his face getting bigger “Ahhhh I get it friends” you just sighed in defeat as the biker wiggled his eyebrows at the two of you.
Taka cleared his throat getting everyone’s attention “Anyways, (Y/N) what did you come here for?” by the sounds of it he already knew why you showed up. “I came to ask if I left my swea-” “Yes you did in fact leave your sweater here.” you could practically feel the lecture coming. He walked into the room and returned shortly, with a neatly folded (F/C) sweater in hand “You really shouldn’t forget your sweater, what if you or your...friend was freezing, you could’ve caught a cold!” ‘Wow he doesn’t believe me either’ snatching your sweater away from him “I know, I know” letting out a small sigh ‘finally I can leave’. “Alright we’re going to leave now!” “Alright kiddo! I’m sure you and your friend will have lots of fun together!” you started to walk away faster with Shuich still glued to your side. When you both were out of earshot Mondo slung his arm around Taka “How come every relationship that’s with an ultimate detective is kept secret?”
You quickly walked towards the exit before anyone else could embarrass you even further. Pushing open the slightly heavy metal door you said a quick ‘bye’ to Ryuji, as soon as the door slammed closed behind you, you let out a sigh of relief. Shuichi was obviously tense but as you let out the soft sigh he relaxed significantly into your side, to an outsider it would’ve looked like you two really were a...couple. ‘OH SHIT MY ARM IS STILL AROUND HIM’ you had to coax the limb into letting go of him especially with the way he had melted into you. It must have taken him a moment to realize that he was no longer in your arms, he took a large step to the side his cheeks flushed pink “S-sorry!” “It’s fine, no need to apologize.” giving him a soft smile. You took a few steps forward hinting at him to follow you and he did, quickly standing by your side again as you brought him back to the ‘safer’ area of the school. “So...uhmm how do you know Mondo” “That’s a looong story....but you don’t need to worry about him” you got close to him and whispered “he’s actually a huge softie once you get to know him.” Giggling when you remembered how the big bad biker started crying over a small stray puppy. His cheeks were a light pink when you looked back at him a small smile ghosting his face, ‘UGH he’s too cute I just wannna scoop him up and...NO, NO I DON’T’ scolding yourself mentally for thinking of something like that, Mondo must have really messed with your mind when he kept talking about dating.
You sighed as you continued on autopilot to the front of the school, somehow forgetting the subject of your VERY UNTRUE thoughts was walking right alongside you. Feeling the cool breeze on your skin made a shiver run down your spine, so you put on the sweater that caused you so much of hastle today. As you slipped it on a soft voice snapped you back into reality “(Y-Y/N)....” “Mhm?” Your eyes drifted over to the fidgeting boy next to you, while straightening out the sweater. You stared at him as he seemed to plan out his words carefully, he’d open his mouth only to close it again, it was actually kinda cute...’AAAAHHH WHY DO I KEEP THINKING LIKE THIS!’ you wanted to slam your head into the concrete wall that surrounded the school. He took a deep breath and let it out with a sigh, effectively grabbing your attention. “A-are you heading h-home?” his voice got quieter ‘Huh?’ “Yeah.” ‘So that’s what he was so nervous to ask?’  You thought to yourself for a moment after seeing his what seems permanently tinted cheeks and shy smile, looking away from him to get  an unbiased answer ‘Should I...no this is just a one time thing, I shouldn’t get attached to him.’ You turned back to the blushing boy “Well...I gotta go home, thank you for all your help today Shuichi.” a sweet smile on your face “N-no problem.” You started your walk home but before you stepped out onto the sidewalk you turned around and waved him goodbye, he waved back.
Now it was back to your ordinary life, popping in your earbuds as you made your way back home. When you reached it you opened the door to the almost always empty house, you plopped your bag and stared at the books peaking out cringing a bit at all the homework you need to complete. ‘Well at least I just have one more day until the weekend’ letting out a sigh as you grab the needed books and notebooks to start, it was surprisingly easy so when you finally finished it you went about your usual routine until you decided to crawl into bed. You stared at the ceiling thinking about what exactly happened today, you could feel your heartbeat quicken as his flushed face and soft smile appeared in your brain, instead of shaking it out of your mind you let yourself indulge in the thoughts as you drifted off to sleep; cuddling into one of your plush pillows with a sleepy smile on your face.

My little take on Shuichi’s character
(or things that I see different)
[Warning that this post might include spoilers about the latest chapters and also about the length. This thing here is really, really, really long.]
In the past weeks and months, I’ve been watching some old DC episodes and re-read the manga files just to realize some things. Often I see Shuichi being considered and characterized as being someone who doesn’t know how to treat the people around him (not to mention that he is always considered to be a jerk when it is about the way he treats Jodie from people who dislike Jodie or who hate Red Starling). But there’s just a lot of material out there, about him being cold, and rude and how he seen as the guy who doesn’t know how to handle children.
But the more we get to know about him, the more I’m convinced that he’s actually a good-natured man with a soft core. He knows how to treat people and while he seems full of himself quite some times, he is never too proud to own his own mistakes.
He doesn’t spare anyone’s feelings when they mess up, but he also doesn’t spare himself either. He is by far not too full of himself to not say when he made a mistake and more than that even, he owns everyone else’s mistakes as well. He never blames anyone, even if it puts his own life in danger.
1. He takes part of the blame every time
Tumblr media
On the same page, in the second panel after this panel above, he says “We couldn’t even think of such a method, including me.” (The panel is too big for this post, so I thought I’d better leave it out).
Tumblr media
Even in the latest BO case he took the blame, even when none of the other agents did.
Tumblr media
And here again. Of course this panel has the purpose of making Masumi notice his catch phrase, but he doesn’t just say that without meaning it. He does realize when he said something that offended/hurt/irritated someone and he is very capable of just voicing that as well. This maybe is as close to an apology as it can get. But he is by no means too proud to own his mistakes.
2. He's in fact empathetic
Tumblr media
Here he is lying to Jodie. He never spares her feelings when he speaks about her driving skills, but he doesn’t tell her anything that might worry her more than is needed either. Even if his purpose is not to not make her worry, but to avoid her to think bad of some colleagues (namely Camel who she is about to rescue from the police) he still is empathetic enough to think about the consequences of telling her. If he didn’t care or couldn’t anticipate a negative reaction, he would have just told her.
3. He’s not just empathetic but his motivation is his family
I have seen posts around, saying that he is selfish and doesn’t care about his family’s feelings. However the truth is, he does all this because he loves his family. His motivation is his family. He loves mysteries, he said that ten years ago, but he also wants to find out what happened to his father and who did something to him.
He lied to Mary about his reasons to study abroad in the US, because he knew she wouldn’t have 15 y/o him go there if he had told her his motivation that early. He got into a physical fight with her when she found out and she refused to pay him an allowance even when he was of age.
(Also a side note: I don’t see Mary as being a violent mother - see Chapter 902 and 1037; in the first one she’s overly joyful as she watched Shuukichi win his 7th shogi title, even to a degree that creeps Masumi. And in the second one she is so excited for her third baby and tells her teenage boys that their dad will come back soon, because of their “cute sons”. She was and still is very affectionate. Her usual harsh and strict behavior is caused by both her fear of the BO/not knowing who to trust and, ten years ago, the fear of losing her son. She had lost her husband before and as a mother, she makes very clear that she doesn’t want to lose any of her kids either. And last to the same people who (maybe) killed her husband. She might have been a tough mom, but she is not a bad mom by any means. Just scared to lose her children too.)
Now, Shuichi does hurt Mary with his disappearing act, but he does all this for his family in the first place.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He is a little bit too confident here, but he knows that his mother acts this way because she is worried. And he tries to calm her by telling her that nothing will happen to him and their family.
4. He wasn’t exactly a jerk to Masumi
A lot of people call Shuichi a jerk for his behavior towards Masumi when he first met her ten years ago. To be fair, he didn’t seem too interested and calling Masumi a brat wasn’t nice either. (But then again, he called Conan a brat in a stressful situation too). And considering that he got into a physical fight with his mom, he was probably not in his best mood either. (More about this later). He doesn’t even say hello to Shukichi, but “It’s been a while...” My ass, Shuichi! At least he noticed that his little brother had grown in the past seven years and asked him in what High School class he is now in.
But now, let’s look at little Masumi trying to make him smile. At first she tries to archive her goal by climbing on the parasol. Shuichi doesn’t laugh about it (come on, what should be funny about it anyway?) but merely tells Shukichi that it is dangerous and he shouldn’t let her do that. He doesn’t blame Masumi for her (childish) behavior but tells his brother that it’s his job to watch and stop her from doing things that could hurt her. He just voices his concern.
The second thing Masumi tries then, is doing some failed cartwheels. Shuichi watches her, but regards her with an exaggerated yawn, as if to say “try harder”. He is aware that she tries to get his attention (maybe not aware that she wants to make him smile) but it looks rather like he’s challenging her. And third, she goes over and sticks the fries where they don’t belong. Now see both Shuichi’s and Mary’s reaction to it:
Tumblr media
While Shuichi is all relaxed and tells her to not play with her food, Mary is upset about it, if not angry. He isn’t wrong with the things he says and he does it still nicer than their mom.
And we should maybe also not forget that Shuichi is probably not in his best mood after fighting with his mom, and being bored. Mary wanted him to come back to Japan and be around his family to let go of his plans  in America (even before she knew about his intention to join the FBI). But he didn’t let her change her mind.
5. He’s good with kids
Camel was surprised to see Shuichi (as Subaru) with the Detective Boys, and even thought that Shuichi didn’t have it easy (to which Shuichi was surprised and asked “You think so?”  as if he never considered it hard). I don’t want to mention Subaru though, because some like to argue that everything Subaru does is an act and none of Subaru’s behavior is the “real” Shuichi.
So we stay at the beach, ten years ago since we saw him a lot around kids. Most of the times when he talks to Shinichi, Ran and Masumi, he shows affectionated gestures (like placing his hand on their heads) or crouches down to get as on eye-level with them.
Tumblr media
(I put them all here on imgur to not make this post bigger than needed. Just check these panels out if you want.)
I don’t think it’s a natural behavior to always kneel down and speak on eye-level with them, instead of just speaking down to them. However, I think for kids this makes a huge difference (though, I really don’t know about it, I could just imagine).
And, something a friend of mine noticed, is that he always asks the people around him if they could do the thing he instructs them to do. He always gives them the chance to opt out of it. He does that with the kids, and he does that with adults as well. He doesn’t force anyone to do anything they don’t feel okay with, but especially kids.
Tumblr media
He also protected Shinichi and asked him and Ran to play with his sister, probably thinking that she’d enjoy kids her age more than him (or even Shukichi for that matter).
6. He’s a good and proud big brother and he loves his family
Just like Mary, he follows his brother’s shogi matches and he looks all proud of his younger brother when he wins his 7th title. Also he does actually risk his mission to save his family (Shukichi, chapter 1045/1046). If it comes down to his endangered family, he’d probably risk a lot to save his family.
Tumblr media
I don’t even think there’s anything else that needs to be said. This is his raw expression when he thinks about his little sister being all grown up now. He also told Conan that he doesn’t tell Masumi about him in an attempt to keep her safe. He says he wants to keep her out of this as much as possible.
And also Mary. He gets worried when he hears Masumi talk about their mother in past tense, so he tries to get information about it and even shows a relieved smile when Masumi tells her that Mary is still alive.
He is a family guy. He might need his space at times, but overall, it shows that he loves his family and that he wants them to live a life without fear - and he wants himself to not worry about their well-being in these dangerous times.
The thing with him is just, that his life hasn’t been easy. He has gone through a lot of dangerous and traumatic things for sure. And these things left traces on him, but he’s still motivated by his loved ones and he does know how to be gentle and nice to both kids and adults. He’s acts matter-of-factly and strict when needed, he does his own things as well, but at the end of the day, he still cares and also shows his softer side, is gentle and affectionate when the situation lets him.

Danganronpa V3 | Kokichi/Shuichi | Rated T
Toast is easy to make, right? Easy to make. You put the bread in the toaster and you wait and you spread honey on it when it’s done. Shuichi likes toast with honey. It’s easy. Kokichi needs easy. He can do this.
Ignoring the voices that have started screaming at him again he fumbles with the bag of bread, barely managing to fish a slice out, hands latching onto it in a seizing grasp so tight it almost crumbles in his hand. Flashes of hot and cold ravaging his body, he practically shoves it in the toaster, aching, hurting, shattering.
(OR: a fragmented road to recovery)
note:
drv3 spoilers!!
tw // suicidal thoughts tw // kokichi's death, miu's death, gonta's death (not directly stated but vague details) tw // unhealthy coping mechanisms
this entire thing is a bit heavy in general so please proceed with caution. it's not so shippy because my goal isn't to romanticize any of this, shuichi isn't a magical being who can heal kokichi with his words and touch, and he's also on the path of recovery as well
this was all written as a word vomit vent thing in one sitting so just lmk if you spot mistakes

He should be asleep.
Kokichi should, but then again, there are a lot of things he should be doing—healing, resting, blocking all memories out—though night terrors and bubbling trepidation and the inability to close his eyes without feeling the cold metal beneath him has proved to be a hindrance. He stays awake more often than he doesn’t, which is something entirely beyond his control; no matter the soothing words Shuichi mumbles in the dead of night, or the way he always keeps Kokichi close by in a loose yet comforting hold, he can’t sleep.
He doesn’t anymore. He’s stopped trying, anyway.
(It goes deeper beyond the label he hides behind as just insomnia. If insomnia can be defined as “persistent problems falling and/or staying asleep,” can it really be just insomnia if he’s the one who’s forcing himself to stay awake? If he only faces more sickening memories when his eyes are closed, what’s the point? Or maybe, just maybe, he’s lying to himself again, something like youdon’twantanyofthoseoptionsyouwanttodisappear—but as he always does, he lets the lie bleed into him until it is him. Until there’s nothing left to call a lie.)
He could be a zombie now, he’s sure of it. With the way he’s roaming around the apartment at—a glance at the clock—4 in the morning, and the way he certainly feels undead, calling himself a zombie doesn’t seem too far off. Shuichi’s grip on him, however loose it may have been, was getting too suffocating anyway.
He sits on the couch. Stares at a TV that’s playing nothing.
Deep breath in—
(...shut up, you asshole! the whizzing of an arrow through heavy air—kaito, can you hear me, please drink this antidote sorry, but i can’t die here… since i’m the mastermind of this killing game—redwhitehotsearingmetalcold—)
He scrambles to turn the TV on.
It’s so funny. The way they never stop fucking talking like a mixtape of voices ringing in his head even though everything is over and done with, oh god, he shouldn’t be dragging this out like he is, because none of it even happened. If none of it happened, why does he always feel the phantom pain of arrows digging into his flesh, or the descension of metal onto someone so petite—it all certainly felt so real, still feels so real—
—It’s not, and he knows that. He woke up from the simulation. Fought until there was no fight in him left. Until his lungs turned to ashes and pretty amethyst hair was yanked out of his scalp (by his doing, everything bad is always by his doing, so it seems) and so many eyes came to check in on him each day he spent recovering slowly in the hospital.
Is he supposed to feel relieved?
Happy? Glad that he’s awake from all of that? It’s alarming, really, that he feels nothing of the sort. What is he supposed to feel? Even if Saihara-chan had told him that any of his feelings were valid—anger, bitterness, resentment and horror—why does he still feel like nothing? Not numbness, but akin to it, certainly, because numbness is where you feel nothing, but simultaneously he feels like nothing. Like everything. Like death. Like life he doesn’t want breathed into him.
The TV drones on, white noise in the back of his head. He could make this work. That’s right. He’s adapted before. He can make himself feel okay again, or lie himself into thinking so, because that’s how it always ends, doesn’t it?
On shaky legs, he blocks out the voices; abhorrent Maki’s, strained Kaito’s, harsh Shuichi’s, tearful Gonta’s, desperate Miu’s, all of them cherry-picked from every single corner of his mind that he can’t ever find a way to escape anymore.
He stumbles, wandering without a purpose over to the bathroom, a trembling hand pushing open the door and flicking on the light. Headache-inducing fluorescent light flickers overhead, until it floods the capacity of the room, bearing enough light for him to be able to survey himself in the mirror.
He looks dead. Or, more so, like he could die. Right now, and maybe put an end to everything. An end to nothing. How does he fucking escape? How can he live like this? Or with this, the knowledge of everything he did in the killing game, his sacrifice, the hatred in everyone’s voices that he doubtlessly deserved?
Kokichi giggles, low and empty, as he turns the faucet on with a squeak and splashes cold water on his face. He could totally die right now. The way that brings more relief to him than anything else ever since the simulation is so laughable.
I could die. Right now. It’s as simple as using the sink or smashing my head against the bathtub. How hilarious.
Giving one final splash of frigid water onto a pale face, he turns the sink off, and allows himself a small moment of breathing. He’s been so bad at that lately, both him and Saihara. Everyone, really. No one is near being the textbook definition of okay, but they all didn’t expect to be either, although the one stark difference between them and him is that they’ve accepted that they’re going to recover slowly and reach okayness once again.
So why does he feel so stuck? Whenever he runs away from the echoing whirr of the hydraulic press it clutches him in its grasp again, and whenever he embraces it it makes him relive the entire scene over and over and over again in ways so sickening he feels like he just gets worse with each damn passing night—gasping for air even when he doesn’t sleep, awakening in cold sweat if he does manage to doze—maybe there’s nothing for him left here, fuck, why didn’t they just let him stay dead—
5, 4, 3, 2, 1. He could do the anxiety coping technique, or he could listen to music as a distraction, or he could go back to bed and pretend none of this is happening, or he could do the breathing method (in for four, hold for seven, out for eight), anything.
He could eat something. He could do that.
Shuichi’s been reprimanding him for his neglect of food anyway (even though the bluenette isn’t all that better at it) so in a way, this could serve as an apology for his inability to be a good person, boyfriend, living human being, all of that. For causing him so much trouble. For interfering with Shuichi’s own recovery process, even though it’s the last thing Kokichi wants to do. Unfortunately, the universe has a lovely addiction to just screwing him over.
Swallowing past a gag, because all of this thinking is so overwhelmingly nauseating, Kokichi stumbles out of the bathroom, not bothering to turn the light off. Everything is always so loud at night, everything is doused in so much more clarity, to the point where he can see them clearly. Miu’s face, terrified and contorted, even though it was just her avatar he still recalls so clearly the look of utter anguish on her actual corpse. Gonta’s baffled and horrified look when Kokichi wouldn’t stop yelling and yelling and yelling (“I’m sick of hearing you say you don’t know! God, why are you so dumb?”). They haunt him in ways unexplainable, although both of them had already made clear they’re on the path of forgiving him, but why does he need to be given undeserved forgiveness—
He finds himself in the kitchen, hands so shaky and cold he’s barely able to even turn on the light, panic emanating for no fucking reason, because he’s all messed up and gross and mutilated in ways that can’t be seen with the naked eye. He can’t cope. Everything fails when he tries. He laughs again, choked and nervous, opening the pantry and letting his eyes mindlessly glance over the food on the shelves; he reaches with invisibly scarred arms and takes out the glass jar of honey.
Flashes of hot and cold ravaging his body, he practically shoves it in the toaster, aching, hurting, shattering.
why are you like this it’s so easy to live why are you having so much trouble with it? is it because you can’t stop hearing iruma’s pleas or maki’s harsh words or kaito’s yells or saihara-chan’s confusion whenever you hung out and played games? is it because it would’ve been easier to stay dead, easier to be crushed and leave it at that, all cracked bones under unforgiving metal? or maybe it’s because—
Stop, fuck, just—
He’s crying—why is he crying?—by the time the toast pops out, golden and hot but he picks it up anyway, he’s been burned worse before, by words and by poison, so he holds it and puts it on a plate on the counter that they must have forgotten to put away.
With a strangled sob he clumsily takes the jar of honey again, tremulous fingers barely letting him even keep his hands on it, glass smooth and cold against calloused skin, worn and too ruined and bitten to be attached to someone as youthful as he is. He can do this, he has to do this, because he doesn’t feel like he’s getting anywhere near better but if he sticks to routine and does everyday things he should be doing easily—he could trick his mind into thinking so. It works, it always works, please work this time…
(Why is something as simple as this so goddamn hard, why is it all so hard, why was dying easier than all of this, why is existing so easy but settling down so difficult, why is waking up so simple but finding reasons to let it stay that way so unbearable, why, why why why—)
He bites his tongue and curses brokenly when the glass jar slips from his hands, falling to the floor without an ounce of grace, fracturing into uncountable glass shards at his feet.
Immediately he steps back, before sinking to his knees with a pathetic sob, the same sinful hands reaching out, hovering and unsure of what to do. Broom—yeah, the broom, he can sweep this up, he can fix it, he can fix all of this, he can fix himself, he can live, he can make himself feel okay, he can exist, he can do this, he can breathe, he can—
In for four, hold for seven, out for eight. His lungs quiver and shrivel up and cease to work whenever he tries sucking in air, body failing him, mind overrun as his vision blurs. If he could just get up and get a broom or something, he could get this all over and done with, or he could stop thinking of the worst possible ways to end this, end him.
Arms wrap around him gently before he can even try to stand up. Kokichi trembles, clawing at the hands of the person as he blubbers and cries and bows his head, unraveling again just as he always does, sick to his stomach and wondering why he’s subjected to this form of torture that he’s incapable of enduring for any longer.
The person gently turns him around in their arms, cups his cheek. The hand is cold. Shaking, too.
He wants to laugh again, but all that leaves him is another mangled cry, idly pressing his forehead against Shuichi’s chest, ringing in his ears so loud he can’t hear whatever the other boy is trying to tell him. Kokichi’s fingers dig into his back, into his soft sleeping shirt, moments away from tearing the fabric. He could throw up. He could die.
A kiss is pressed to the top of his head, and Shuichi is too nice for someone who had found his very pathetic boyfriend sobbing on the kitchen floor with forgotten toast on the counter and a shattered glass jar with honey pooling at his feet. This time, Kokichi does laugh, the noise interrupted by hiccuping sobs but near-hysterical at the exact same time, the sound oddly resembling the way he had laughed in the killing game, though lacking the malice it had at the time. Tired this time around.
He laughs until it gives way to screaming sobs, Shuichi trying his best to stop his own disturbed trembling, merely speaking softly and low into the shell of Kokichi’s ear, no doubt trying to reassure him. Or get him to cope (and fail). Or help him breathe.
why is this happening why am i like this why are you doing this to me, shuichi, it just hurts more whenever you try and i’m trying so hard to feel okay again and make things easier but it just gets harder every single day and—
—Kokichi giggles softly.
Shuichi shushes him gently, but Kokichi basks in the ridiculousness of this all. He switches between laughing and crying, screaming and chuckling, breaking down. Perhaps he’ll never get back from this. Shuichi had told him that all his emotions are valid, but how can he describe how he’s feeling into words? Crying is supposed to help. How amusing.
(Is he supposed to feel better? Relieved? He stifles a noise halfway between a sob and a chortle. It’s uproarious, he decides, that he feels anything but.)

Hajime Hinata
He closes his eyes, letting himself take a breath.
You sit down, and he remains standing, ignoring your presence.
All you can do is continue to doodle with a pen you stole from Togami.
You had the command to watch over him, so now you are stuck with him in the same room, the lights not a yellow tint but instead red, helping the atmosphere.
You know Hajime wouldn’t hurt you.
But does he know that?
Irritation laces his brow at the confinement. Something irks his mind. That’s a common feeling for him. But something about this feels different.
“I know you, don’t I?”
You ears perk up at the sound of his voice. When you look up, you find yourself caught off guard by something you thought you got used to, a golden eye and a red eye glaring down at you.
“I’m your kohai.” You say with a smile, to which he stays unemotional.
So you change your response, “I’m the class below you, Hajime.”
Something about the way you say his name provoked a feeling inside of him. He doesn’t exactly understand it. So he looks away and tries to blink away the warm feeling in his chest.
You eye him for a little longer, but his face is turned away from you, so you end up just returning to your sketches.
That doesn’t last very long, however, because you are quickly distracted by him pulling up a chair to sit next to you.
This easily brings warmth to your cheeks. Warmth you don’t want to be there.
“And you haven’t seen me for awhile.” He suggests, obviously still stuck on the topic.
“A very long while, Hajime.”
The use of his name again. He pauses. A long pause. But you don’t dare break eye contact with him.
“We went to school together.” He adds on. It’s hardly a question.
“Hope’s Peak Academy.”
Anticipation drips into his eyes, for just a moment, before he quickly throws it away. He wanted you to say more. But he’s already put everything together in his head the moment you repeated his name. It’s just a matter of if he can get you to say it.
“How did we meet?”
You smile, the memory seeming like ions ago.
“You slammed a door against me. It was on accident, of course, and you wouldn’t stop apologizing.”
He watches your cheeks burn and the way you calmly set down your pen.
“When was the last time you saw me?”
Instead of a sad look, as he expected, your smile just grew.
“Well,” you start with a flirty tone, “no, nevermind.”
That just made his eyebrows furrow. So it’s true.
He eyes you up and down, taking in the figure he must have seen every inch of. Interesting, he says in his head, he is surely different.
You had no shame even giving him that hint, as well. You were laughing about it.
“I think it’s time to go,” you say through your laughs, which now come off as a result of timidness instead of joy.
No, his head commands.
You stand, pushing in your chair and putting the pen behind your ear before walking past him.
A gust of air passes your figure. You don’t even notice is at first until a hand is in front of you, blocking your path, and slammed against the wall.
You exclaim, “What’s your deal?”
His hair is cut short like Hajime’s, one of his eyes remains a familiar shade of gold, and he dresses like Hajime would dress. But Hajime was not an impulsive person.
He speaks breathlessly, forcing out the words.
“I know you love me. I know you too well.”
It was a battle with his mind. His emotions got in the way, they corrupted his way of thinking. He shouldn’t have done that. It was rude, on one hand, but it did give him the answer he wanted from you.
You put one hand on his cheek, stroking the sensitive skin. He shudders at the touch.
“And I know you love me, too. You always have.”
What should he do? His mind is is shambles. He can’t even think. What would the old Hajime do?
His hand falls, but not to his side. It lands on your hips. But gentle. He’s kind to you.
The invisible line that connects you to shortens while he leans in. You can’t even believe that your words affected him. You still thought he was still emotionless, unhopeful.
Maybe he still is. But that doesn’t stop him from kissing you.
Shuichi Saihara
Liar. The word runs through your head. Shuichi can lie? Isn’t he supposed to be on the side of truth?
Maybe Ouma is starting to get to him.
You stand behind your podium calmly, hands resting on the metal while your eyes move left and forth between the people arguing.
As long as time is being wasted, it doesn’t matter to you.
“Come on, Shuichi, it’s soooo fucking obvious!” Iruma calls out again. “But because he gives you a huuugggeee boner doesn’t mean he’s innocent!”
He glances at you, and so do the other 13 students.
“S/O would never do anything like that!”
Ouma pitches in, “Come ooonnn, Shuichi, what happened to addressing every possibility?”
A blush forms on his cheeks. He’s not flustered though, it’s the anger and embarrassment he feels when trying to protect you, especially when you aren’t responding back to him.
“It’s because he loves me.”
Shuichi freezes to the sound of your voice, one of his hands gripping onto his heart. It’s not true, he tries to soothe himself, it’s not true.
“Wh-What?” His voice still shakes and his heart quickens. A million of thoughts run through his head.
“I know you love me. I know you too well.” The words come smoothly from your lips. You say it casually - too casually.
His mouth goes dry. He thinks about the last week and all the times he spent with you. Whether it was going through the newly found rooms or escaping at night to talk underneath the stars. How sensitive he was and how softly you held him all came together to make one thing clear.
It was true.
You sigh, leaning your face into your hand. “So he’s not going to lay it all out.”
Maki rolls her eyes. “So you’re admitting to it?”
“No way!” The words slip from your tongue before you could catch them. So you continue on with your useless defenses. “There’s no reason for me to even kill them!”
But there was.
And that was the problem.
They came at you first, which is the truth, so you smashed their head open and left. No part of you wishes to share this. Instead, you’re going to become the villain. The evil antagonist for him to defeat. You know if he knows the truth - how helpless you were - he would try to fight for your life.
But you need to die. To save everyone else. And you accepted your death the moment you walked out of that room.
Everytime you look at Shuichi you see the time you two spent at night, laying on the grass and looking up. You told him how beautiful he was, and how soft his hands felt when you held them, and how much you wished time to be back to normal.
All of that just looks like a lie as you stand behind your podium, defending your faux innocence like the antagonist should.
You wonder how Shuichi will grow from this one.

Beta AU - Main story, Chapter 6, Investigation (Part 1)
Note of the author: Guess who’s baaaack? ;) Boy have I been waiting for this chapter.
Chapter 6: My killing game, our killing game
...
A young boy wanders in the cafeteria, a rather tasty-looking meal on his plate.
He spots the two other people present and approaches them.
"C-Can I sit here?"
The girl was mindlessly picking the vegetables on her plate with a fork, head resting in her palm. "Suit yourself."
The silence immediately settled back.
It's not like there was anything to say. What was the point of talking anyway?
... He doesn't know how much time passed before he heard the sound of footsteps behind him.
The person didn't even ask before sitting next to them.
He had seen him back then, so his face was not so unfamiliar.
The other guy stared at him curiously, then raised his head.
"... I feel like I've seen you somewhere before." he said. "Not that it really matters anymore."
The new guy rolled his eyes. "Yes, I killed someone a year ago and my face was plastered on every single newspaper for two weeks. Big deal."
The girl raised an eyebrow. "Shouldn't you be... you know... in prison?"
"It was a pain making my way out here, but I'm used to orchestrating mastermind-ish plans. It's a must-have in this world."
"I see..."
Leaning back into his chair, the supposed murderer glanced at the other side of the cafeteria, where two other people were discussing, far away from them. A rather frail-looking boy and a strong-looking young woman. He narrowed his eyes at them, like a predator analyzing its prey.
But the silence was rather cut short as the sound of a breaking plate was heard, accompanied by a person stumbling on the ground, now covered in food.
A man was standing next to the victim, clearly the one responsible for the incident. "Watch where you're going, skeleton."
The smaller girl looked like she wanted to cry, trying to retrieve what she could with difficulty.
He swore he saw a smirk forming on the killer's face before turning back to look at the scene. "Hey, jackass. Try to get a better adversary next time, would you? You look pathetic bullying someone half your size, just saying."
"What did you say?!"
"How about you try and fight mademoiselle over here instead?" he glanced at the tall woman in the back. "Unless you're scared of getting your ass handed to you by a girl."
"I'll fucking show you-!"
"ENOUGH!!"
Everyone turned to the source of the voice.
Just their presence was enough to make everyone on edge, but their wrath was feared by all. Like a god among men, a single misstep around them was enough to put your life and dignity on the line.
And they were not here to play poker.
"You two better not cause any more trouble. I could snap my fingers and you two would become cannon fodder for them. You wouldn't want that for yourself, would you?"
The two's gazes met. The tall man's eyes were full of rage, but the other was not letting any emotion slip out. Perhaps one could see annoyance with a hint of pride, if they were perceptive enough.
But both knew their place. It was wiser not to respond.
"... That's what I thought. Because you are here does not mean you are safe yet, remember that."
Silence settled back in the cafeteria, but the dread did not fade away.
But they were here now, and there was no going back.
Not now, not ever.

 ...
The stars were illuminating the night sky as always, giving the academy a semblance of light in the darkness.
Although that is only a lie Shuichi told himself to feel more human, even though he would never admit it out loud.
An artificial sky looming over an academy of students with fake memories and pasts.
His sense of reality was decaying over time. If he really took a moment to think for himself, he would probably feel his mind falling apart. Nothing but a structure of lies that unconsciously kept him sane, slowly crumbling into ruins.
After watching Rantaro's video and learning the truth about his intentions and his wretched success, they had left the building.
Miu stopped in her tracks. Her eyes wide, she had been staring at the ground the entire time.
"This is... This is so wrong..." she muttered.
Kaito put a hand on her shoulder. "At least... He succeeded in his own way."
The young woman immediately jerked away. "Succeeded?! Rantaro died! He killed himself and Ryoma for his plan and you're telling me he succeeded?!"
"I never said the way he did so wasn't completely fucked up!!" Kaito yelled back. "Hell, I don't even know why he considers it a success in the first place, I'm just quoting him!"
Shuichi didn't have the courage to look at them in the eyes, but spoke anyway. "He said it would kill Monokuma's will to continue the game, but... Is this really true?"
"Who the fuck cares about that?!" tears formed in Miu's eyes. "Why did he think that killing himself was something that would truly end the game?!"
Kokichi didn't even try to say anything. He could only stare at the argument.
"We don't know what Monokuma is planning to do now, he could put us through another time limit for all we know!!" Miu continued rambling. "Monokuma wants to make us suffer no matter what, why did he think he would stop after that?!"
"I don't fucking know!!" Kaito could only try to keep up. It's not like the others could. "I don't know what went through Rantaro's head nor what led him to believe that this would be a brilliant plan!"
"I don't think trying to understand his thought process would lead us somewhere."
Shuichi jumped at the voice.
Kirumi was staring at the ground. She looked... distressed.
"He was too far gone. There's something in his eyes that felt unnatural."
"Something, dare I say... not even human. I cannot describe it, but it's not an emotion you would ever want to see in someone."
The violinist felt his heart sting. He had seen it, too. The two were the ones who witnessed the most of him. Not the facade of the leader who fought no matter what, but the vulnerable him. The real him.
But Miu lost even more of her temper than she already had. She approached Kirumi and grabbed her by the strands of her corset. "Rantaro was our friend!! And you're saying he doesn't even deserve to be called 'human'?!"
Shuichi tried to step in. "That's not what she meant! Miu, please! We're all-
"Am I the only one who even remotely cared about him?!"
She slammed a hand to her chest. Her voice was cracking, and tears were now yet again flowing from her eyes.
"You're all yelling about how there was no hope in Rantaro, that he wasn't even human in your eyes!! You're all claiming to like him but can't even show him respect after he's dead!!"
"How did I even bring myself to befriend any of you monsters?!"
Shuichi felt himself stiffen.
There's a part of him that knew Miu meant her words.
He quickly realized he was not the only one who froze.
Everyone was silently staring at her.
The artist stared back, slowly realizing what she had just said. She slammed her hands on her mouth. "I..."
"It's fine."
Shuichi immediately looked at Kokichi.
"You don't need to say anything. I... I know I must have said way worse back then."
She glanced away. "You... You were just grieving."
"And so are you!" he exclaimed. "You said it to me back in my lab! We all should take the time to grieve! Why would you be an exception to this?!"
She stared at him with dumbfounded eyes.
“Please... I don’t want you to lament in despair like I did and I... I don’t want you to go through the pain I experienced.” Kokichi muttered.
“I don’t want anyone else to go through this ever again.”
His voice was low, like each of his words was difficult to speak out.
Her eyes met the ground, hoping to hide her tears just a little.
"Miu..."
Kaito took a step forward. "We've all been assholes to each other at some point or another, and me more than anyone else."
“Perhaps I’m just projecting, but... I know you had faith in me when I was at my worst, so it’s only fair I have faith in you when you are at your worst.”
The young woman sniffled. "I'm sorry, it’s just... Rantaro isn't..."
"No. Rantaro was not a monster." Kirumi spoke, eyes closed. "What I do believe is that the game had much more impact on him than he let us know. Things he hid from us for our sake. This closure must have led him to believe he had to go to extremes to help us, and thus orchestrated this... ‘case’, if we can even call it that way."
"We should have been more careful about him. But now is too late to lament ourselves over our mistakes."
"I should have worded my thoughts differently, I apologize."
Shuichi felt his heart calm down, for some reason.
Kokichi nodded. "That's... the impression he gave to me, too..."
He could only agree.
Kaito continued looking at his friend, who seemed lost in thoughts. "Maybe we should settle for the night? We might be in a better state to-
"No." Miu raised her head. "We're not sitting here doing nothing."
The violinist's eyes widened. "Are you... planning on doing something?"
"Rantaro's goal was to end the game. And the only way to honor him is to put an end to this right here, right now."
"Tonight we discover the last truths of the killing game. We investigate about Keebo's death, what really happened to us and we expose the-
Miu was cut short by the sound of an explosion right above their heads- It was coming from the building itself.
"W-What's going on?!" Kokichi exclaimed.
"I don't know but we need to get out of here!" the girl yelled.
The group immediately started fleeing.
"I can't run for shit, idiots!" Kaito shouted.
Shuichi looked back. "Guys! We gotta help Kaito!"
Kirumi stared at him for a moment, then sighed. She wrapped one of her arms around his back as support and the two followed the rest of the group.
After getting to the dorms, they turned back to the main building, witnessing the destruction caused by an unknown force.
It seemed as though an exisal -the blue one from what he was seeing- started getting involved in the chaos, but...
"Why is everything exploding?!" Shuichi exclaimed. "Monokuma wouldn't do this, right? So who is destroying the building? Who is piloting the exisal?!"
There were only one of the deadly machines. Monokuma could be the one piloting it, but that didn't explain why he would do so.
"If Monokuma is using an exisal to stop the chaos, then... Who is destroying the building?" Kokichi asked.
They all turned to him.
The bear would not create that scene by himself. So who?
They were all here. It wasn't any of the five survivors.
But before they could ponder more, another exisal showed up. The green one.
The two mechas faced each other, and not even ten seconds later, the blue exisal was tossed across the courtyard.
They could only watch the scene unfold, bewildered by the sudden appearance of the machines.
Who? Who was fighting?
He glanced at Kirumi, who seemed to wonder the same.
But she suddenly perked up, becoming as pale as the fake moon above their heads.
He turned to her. "What is it?! Do you know who is in here?!"
The others faced her as well.
She stayed silent for a moment.
"... Where is Monodam?"
Shuichi blinked. "What- Monodam? But he's dead! Ryoma killed him!"
"Have any of you seen his dead body?"
The violinist's eyes widened. "Huh?"
"This is the number one rule any assassin or mercenary must follow, no matter what."
"If there is no dead body, there is no victim."
"So where is Monodam?"
Kokichi shook his head. "Are you suggesting he is alive?"
"Can you tell for sure he was dismantled by Ryoma? Have you seen his carcass in pieces?"
Miu frowned. "Didn't Rantaro say he took him apart?"
"Do you still believe anything Rantaro says when it comes to the plan in which he managed to deceive everyone, including Monokuma and his own partner?"
... She froze.
Shuichi looked at the green exisal that was approaching them.
The machine stopped, then bent down.
The top of the exisal opened. Something jumped and flawlessly landed on the ground.
A tiny dichromatic bear.
But...
Something wasn't right.
It wasn't the white and green bear they all expected to see.
Whatever was standing before them did have its right side white, but the left side was painted in a dark grey-blue color. Its hands were no more, replaced by small black and bright blue canons, and the pacifier had the same colors as them. Small blue pins were attached to its mechanical limbs, with tiny cables entering the body.
The belly, instead of being plain white, had a particular pattern on it. Two dark scissor blades surrounded by even more thin cables.
A symbol that was all too familiar to them now.
But what stood out the most was its right eye. It was hard to tell what even was stuck on it. The piece had been attached here artificially, cables going around the head to keep it in place.
The blue parts were slightly glowing, somehow giving an eery feeling to the robot.
The new bear took a few steps forward.
They could only stare at him with wide eyes. What was he even going to do?
"5-OUT-OF-6. SOMEONE-IS-MISSING."
Missing? Everyone was here, though...
The bear made a strange noise as the others glanced at each other.
"MISSING-PERSON: RANTARO-AMAMI. PLAYING-'INTRODUCTION'."
His eye started glowing green, and 'Monodam' started talking again.
"Hey."
They all recognized that voice instantly.
Ryoma...?
The man sighed. "I really didn't want to record this part. But I had to keep in mind the possibility that this plan would fail. That Rantaro would get executed."
If only he knew...
"If you haven't guessed it already, no, I didn't kill Monodam. The hacking gun only knocked him out. All I did was repair and modify him to act as I wanted. It was tough, but manageable. What you're looking at is the project I have worked on for the past two days."
"Meet Monoshi. An upgraded version of Monodam specifically made to end the game after the trial, whether both of us died or just me. But if this introduction is playing, then that means things didn't go as planned."
"Have you guys watched the videos about Monodam's faked death and my real cause of death?"
The light in his right eye changed to a bright yellow. Was he waiting for them to answer?
"Yes, we did..." Shuichi replied.
"PLAYING-'INTRODUCTION-3'." the bear spoke again, his eye gaining back its green color.
"Good. Then you must have realized this trial was incredibly unfair for the both of us. But I'm not here to talk about that. Pretty sure Rantaro did that already, and if he missed any details, I have noted the important stuff in my lab for you guys just in case."
"As Tsumugi said in her notebook, you guys have to investigate Keebo's death. Now is the perfect opportunity to put an end to this game once and for all."
'Monoshi' approached Kaito and extended its hand to him. The mechanism opened to reveal a green key.
"Kaito. I heard from Rantaro that you wanted to pilot the exisals." he said as the biker's eyes widened. "I am giving you the key to the green one. I don't think it should be that hard to control considering those fingerless bears are able to do so. Do your best."
"Monoshi will take care of opening secret passages and entrances that are not accessible right now. Monodam knew what places are left to visit, so Monoshi does as well. Although for that, bombs will be used so make sure to get out of the way when needed."
"Kaito, you and Monoshi will have to keep Monokuma busy long enough for the others to complete the investigation."
The bombs...
Shuichi felt like he should have expected that, for some reason.
The robot turned to the blonde woman. "Miu."
"To be honest, I cannot exactly pinpoint why, but Rantaro seemed to trust you more than anyone else if we exclude me. He asked me to give you the task to lead the group for the investigation in case things didn't work out for him."
The street artist jumped.
"Huh?" she muttered, surprised by his words. But the robot didn't seem to register that.
"In short- Monoshi will unlock the secret entrances, he and Kaito will distract Monokuma and the rest of you will investigate everything you possibly can."
Shuichi nodded.
But his heart suddenly stopped when he heard a crash from behind them.
Monokuma came back with not one, but the four other exisals.
"My, my! My sweet Monodam, already an angsty teenager going through a rebellious phase... But to want to kill your own father? Puhuhu! That is not something I expected from the most tender and affectionate kid of mine!"
"But you see, with the joy of modern technology, your wonderful brothers and sisters could cross the boundary of life and death once again and come back to our marvelous and colorful world!"
"Do you seriously think you could steal *my* exisals for *your* goals? Puhuhu! These two had a great sense of humor!"
Monoshi's eye turned blue for a moment.
"VOICE-RECOGNIZED: MONOKUMA. PLAYING-'GREETINGS'."
As the eye turned green, the modified robot spoke again.
"Hey there. Knew you were going to try and stop this. But do you seriously think you're gonna win?"
"Rantaro and I have prepared a lot more than you could possibly imagine. You and this entire academy are going down whether you like it or not."
Monokuma laughed. "Puhuhu! I must admit I am impressed! To trick me into thinking my precious monokub was dead when in reality, he was rebelling against me? Such despair!"
"But you're forgetting that *I* am the headmaster of the academy and the one managing the killing game!"
"This little tamper tantrum is over!"
...
Monoshi stayed silent for what felt like an eternity. And then-
His eye glowed red.
"HOSTILITY-RECOGNIZED. PROCEED-TO-EXTERMINATION."
"What-
The bear pointed his canon at Monokuma and immediately started firing. Their captor dodged, but the group now had to get out of this conflict and fast if they didn't want to die because of collateral damage.
The exisals started shooting missiles at Monoshi as well, but he was just as agile. Their battle quickly moved away from them, the bears chasing each other in the courtyard. The scene looked unreal.
"Now's our chance!" Miu exclaimed. "Kaito! You think you can pilot the exisal?"
The biker smirked. "I've been waiting for this. But before that, you guys stay safe, alright? I know you can do this. Go and investigate without me, I'll only slow you down."
Shuichi nodded. "Count on us, Kaito!"
"Also..."
He approached Miu, and suddenly held her in his arms. The girl was surprised, but she did not push him away. After a few seconds, he took a step back and put his hands on her shoulders. "I know you can lead this group to our freedom. I better see you alive at the end. Alright?"
"I better see you alive at the end! But I promise."
She turned to the rest of them.
"Let's end this everyone! Tonight, we're ending this killing game once and for all!"
The tone in her voice warmed his heart. This strength, this emotion... He had seen it before.
It was reminiscent of the old Rantaro they had known at the beginning of the game.
A great leader guiding them to victory.
Kaito climbed into the exisal, using the key Monoshi had given him.
The mecha stood up.
"LET'S FUCKING GO!!"
The machine jumped towards the fight between the robotic bears.
This was it.
Their chance to fight back and win.
The investigation they all had been waiting to do finally started.
...
Kokichi spoke up. "How do we even start?"
Miu hummed. "Kirumi, no offense but you're the one who should know the most about how to get away with murder... How would you proceed to cover the evidence?"
"None taken." The woman pondered. "But investigating Keebo's death will be extremely difficult, and it is not the only thing we need to investigate. Monoshi talked about secret rooms as well."
"We need to know everything about this killing game."
"Good point." the artist replied. "Keebo's death was long ago and essential evidence might have disappeared since then."
She was right. The killer- the mastermind must have cleaned up after themselves. Was it even possible to solve this case now?
"For now, Kaito and Monoshi are keeping the monokubs busy, so the rooms might be opened later. We should focus on what we can investigate." Kirumi continued.
"How about groups of two? We might be able to cover more ground this way." Shuichi suggested.
"I already know I am headed to the fifth floor for Ryoma's notes, so whoever comes with me, please make up your mind fast." the mercenary raised a hand.
"Can I leave this to you, Shuichi?" Miu asked. "Kokichi and I will go to the exisal hangar to see if we can recover anything."
The violinist nodded. "Sounds good!" he turned to Kirumi. "Shall we go?"
The groups separated. His partner was fast, but she often checked to see if he was following.
And true to her words, the duo went to the fifth floor. To Ryoma's lab.
The doors had been destroyed, supposedly by Monoshi when he made his way out.
"Do you think there is something else we can get here?" Shuichi asked.
She entered the lab. "That's what we'll find out. I wouldn't be surprised if they somehow had another trick in their sleeves, even though both of them are dead now."
It was hard not to be impressed by their genius. Kiyo and Tsumugi might have tried to help from beyond the grave with their notebooks, but Ryoma and Rantaro were on a whole other level, and are still actively helping them.
Some boxes looked intact, but some had been completely destroyed and seemed to have exploded from the inside. The two started walking towards the back of the lab, but before they could do so, they noticed a box that stood out from the rest.
It was burned in the shape of an X, and judging from the way it looked, someone had done that on purpose.
However, it was easy to tell who did the damage.
Kirumi didn't wait and immediately climbed on the box. Monoshi, or rather Ryoma must have wanted them to find what was inside. Perhaps it was the notebook?
"The lock was destroyed. I'll see what I can find in there." she said.
"Alright..." Shuichi muttered. Out of nervousness, he kept going through the lab to see if anything else was worth investigating.
He did notice another box that was partially exploded, with nothing interesting inside. The lock didn't seem to have been destroyed, though.
Was this the box Monoshi was kept in?
The back of the lab, despite what Shuichi first thought, hadn't changed at all. Everything was the same as it was during their last visit earlier.
"I found the notebook."
The violinist jumped at Kirumi's sudden appearance. "Really?"
The two approached the source of light.
"Did you find anything else?" she asked as she opened the book.
He shook his head. "I mean, I found the box Monoshi might have been kept in, but nothing worth our attention."
Kirumi hummed as she read the first page. "... This indeed seems to be a recap of everything they have discovered. The summary states that this was made in case Rantaro didn't have time to tell us everything, just like Monoshi said."
"I see..." Shuichi muttered. They took a considerable amount of precautions- although the two were never on the same page in the first place.
"The flashback lights, the cameras, ending the killing game... Hm?"
Shuichi blinked. "What is it?"
"There is a chapter called 'The mastermind's goals.' I don't think Rantaro explained anything about this."
"Let me see!"
Kirumi put the book on the workspace.

Entry n°4
Don't expect me to know about the reasons why this game was created, I don't know. Neither of us do and it's for you guys to find out. At first, we did ask ourselves why, but it became clear pretty quickly that the 'why' was unimportant.
This is about the motives given to us. We didn't think much about that compared to other stuff so don't expect clear explanations. Those are just Rantaro and I's theories so take this with a grain of salt.
The first motive: the time limit and the first blood perk, were obviously to start the game by all means necessary. I don't know what else to say. Easy way to start things with someone obviously falling for this shit. Fantastic.
The second, we're not sure. That might have been to expose some of our secrets, like Kirumi's talent. The tablets were obviously switched intentionally. There's no way the only two tablets that didn't reach their owners coincidentally happened to be those of the one who hid her talent and someone who was likely to watch their video. In other words, it was to reveal stuff that we would have never guessed if not for Monokuma's 'help'. The accomplice perk was made to turn our cooperation against us. To dissuade us to work together, make sure we all become paranoid and break us mentally. Not difficult to understand.
The third is incomprehensible to me. By that, I mean the 'how'. Why would I turn into a coward? I don't know if I was kidnapped again or some shit, but whoever was with them wasn't me. But anyway, the mastermind obviously wanted to eliminate temporarily the smart people (Tsumugi, Rantaro and I) to do their little scheme in peace, which was Keebo's murder.
The fourth may have been to expose our last secrets like Kaito's leg, Kokichi's trauma, Kirumi's condition, and as Rantaro said, manipulate Kiyo into killing Tsumugi by putting more and more pressure on him.
The fifth motive doesn't make any damn sense. I know he blackmailed Kiyo to make the trial last longer to extend a new time limit, but he could have ditched it after his death for despair or some other stupid excuse. Although with the circumstances,  I can see why he would put a second time limit. But offering equipment to explore the outside world? He could have shut his mouth and nothing would have changed. Fucking idiot. He should know better by now.
Anyway, this is the least important part and the one we're the less certain about, but those were the most solid theories we had.
--
Shuichi blinked, clearly not expecting the tone in the soldier's writing. "That's... Interesting..."
However, he quickly noticed something. "Wait, you told Ryoma about your condition?"
She shook her head. "I didn't. But I believe Rantaro must have told him."
"What is done, is done. Everyone knows now, and I do not think it is useful to hide it anymore."
Those two exchanged everything they knew, so it was not surprising, actually.
The woman sighed. "A part of me thought that the 'tablet switch mistake' for the second motive was intentional, but I see that I was not the only one who got to this conclusion."
He winced.
"Although what makes me worried is the third motive." she said. "Kidnapped and replaced by some sort of clone temporarily?"
He hummed. "But... Ryoma said he wasn't sure... Can we really trust this?"
After a short pause, Kirumi closed the book. "Probably not. But we should keep this in mind."
Obtained truth bullet! Killing game motives
"Is there anything else worth reading in this?" Shuichi asked.
His partner reopened the book, and that's when the two noticed the last part of the summary.
1. Flashback lights 2. Cameras 3. Ending the killing game 4. The mastermind's goals 5. Monoshi 6. Stuff
"Stuff?" Shuichi frowned. "That sounds odd..."
Kirumi quickly turned the pages.

Entry n°6
I don't care if the person reading this is Rantaro or not. I'll be dead by the time anyone finds this anyway, and perhaps you are now dead too, boss. So I'm just going to assume someone else is reading.
I don't know why, but it feels like Rantaro is still hiding things. That he never shared certain details with me. I always told him everything I knew, I grew to know him and his habits more than anyone else here. I always somehow managed to get him to speak to me truthfully up until... I would say the 4th trial.
Ever since then, things have changed, somehow. He's been suggesting solid theories more than ever, but at the same time, he seems to be hiding even more information from me.
There is something he knows that I don't. I never got him to speak the truth and it's frustrating as hell.
We're supposed to be damn soldiers, the smartest and the strongest of the group, and our job is to help everyone escape. Why is he withholding information from me?
In any case, I'm extremely worried. I will keep the stoic face because it's easier for me to manage, but at this point I know I cannot do anything anymore and I have accepted it.  It's probably too late now, but I wanted to write this somewhere. One could count this as venting, I guess.
Good luck in ending the game, I hope you guys will make it out alive, for our sake.
Sincerely, Ryoma Hoshi.
--
Shuichi glanced away from the book. "Do you think... He knew Rantaro had planned to die from the beginning?"
Kirumi stared at the text. "I don't think so."
She closed the notebook and gave it to him. "I am more inclined to think he told Ryoma just the right amount of information for him to cooperate with his plan without any sort of hesitation. He didn't tell him things that could hurt his feelings and make him unwilling to act, or realize the mission could be pointless."
The violinist winced. "That's kind of harsh, don't you think? Rantaro... I understand he might have hidden things from Ryoma but... He wasn't a heartless manipulator, was he?"
The mercenary stayed silent for a moment.
"What would you have done in Ryoma's position if you knew nothing was real?"
He paused. That was not a question he expected to hear.
"If you knew your entire life didn't matter, that everything you had done up until now was nothing but meaningless lies, would you have accepted to sacrifice your life for everyone?"
"I-I..." Shuichi stuttered. How could he even answer that?
"Both Ryoma and Rantaro were devoted soldiers. Even after discovering all of his memories could have been faked, Rantaro continued. He went through this plan and sacrificed himself and Ryoma for us. But what about Ryoma? Would he have followed him, knowing this sacrifice could be pointless, or just not for him to do?"
...
Shuichi stared at the ground. "This is..." he looked up to the young woman, hoping to find answers. "W-What do you mean?"
The silence as Kirumi seemed to be choosing her words was almost eerie.
"... This dilemma is what I have supposedly been living for a long time. I didn't have the full details of my missions. Perhaps the target was a good person, but I was told they were vile and needed to be eliminated. The less you are told, the less likely you are to rebel or regret your actions afterwards."
"So you obey, murder, and move onto the next target without asking yourself any questions."
She turned her back, facing the exit.
"With what Rantaro told us after the vote, those philosophies are starting to lose meaning. Perhaps it is time for me to reconstruct my beliefs, and find out who I really am."
"I should be glad there is a possibility I am not the killer of numerous innocents, but somehow, I am not."
"The unknown has always been humanity's greatest fear, as they say."
Without another word, she slowly made her way towards the entrance.
Shuichi could only stare.
... Perhaps it was indeed the time to start questioning what he truly believes in.
Obtained truth bullet! Unknown memories
The two left the lab since there was nothing else to see.
But the moment they stepped on the stairs, the building started trembling, like something was happening above the fifth floor.
"What's going on?!" Shuichi turned to Kirumi.
"It looks like either the rooftop or Himiko's lab has been damaged. We need to go now."
The two ran as fast as they could.
They reached the first floor and spotted Miu and Kokichi.
"Monoshi has opened something in Himiko's lab!" Miu exclaimed. "I don't know what it is, but that's what he told us before going back to help Kaito."
"But we also need to investigate the rest of the building for evidence about Keebo's case..." Kokichi said.
"Then Kokichi and I will investigate the building itself while you two go to the lab." Kirumi suggested.
"There's no time to waste! Shuichi, let's go!" the street artist immediately made her way to the black and white door, the violinist following her.
He had forgotten how long those stairs were, but this wasn't the time to complain.
The star-patterned door opened, and the two immediately spotted two gaping holes in the lab. One giving a direct view of the fight between Kaito and the bears in the courtyard, and another leading into a strange white room in the back of the lab.
They entered and saw sixteen cabins attached to powerful-looking machines.
"What the hell are these?!" Miu approached one of them. "And why do they feel... familiar?"
She stepped inside. Only one person could fit in these. But before she knew it, the thing shut, trapping her in. "Hey! Let me out!"
Shuichi panicked. "Miu!"
He inspected the machine, but it seemed nothing was of use. His eyes darted on all sides of the room and then found a red button in the back.
Emergency shutdown system Do not press if the person inside is not in immediate danger.
The violinist did not think and immediately slammed the button.
The cabin Miu was in immediately opened, letting out some steam.
The girl stumbled out of it, a hand on her forehead. "Ugh..."
Shuichi went by her side to support her. "Are you okay?"
She rubbed her eyes. "I... I don't know, but..."
"I remember."
Shuichi's eyes widened. "Remember what?"
She glanced around the room. "We were here... We were trapped in those... I don't know for how much time but we were here at some point..."
He frowned. "For the Gofer project?"
"Yes! But... Is it, really? Rantaro and Ryoma confirmed the Gofer project was a lie, so... Why?"
Vague memories resurfaced in Shuichi's mind. He had been in this room, once. But now he wasn't so sure.
Were other people with him? Familiar faces?
Nothing was clear, and all the memories felt like they were drowned in a sea of white noise.
"I mean, I do remember being here and... I think I do remember seeing you guys but everything is so fuzzy..." she said, before gripping her head. "Ugh. My head hurts."
Obtained truth bullet! Familiar cabins
Shuichi narrowed his eyes. "Perhaps we should think about it later... There are so many places we need to explore."
He glanced at the file on the table near them. "Perhaps this could help us?"
The two approached the papers and started reading them.
It seemed to be some sort of summary.
Gofer Project Participant List
- Akamatsu Kaede - Amami Rantaro - Chabashira Tenko - Gokuhara Gonta - Harukawa Maki - Hoshi Ryoma - Idabashi Tatsuya - Iruma Miu - Momota Kaito - Ouma Kokichi - Saihara Shuichi - Shinguji Korekiyo - Shirogane Tsumugi - Tojo Kirumi - Yonaga Angie - Yumeno Himiko
Miu frowned. "Who the fuck is Tatsuya Idabashi?!"
Shuichi was just as confused. "And why isn't Keebo on this list? He was one of us!"
The two glanced at each other, trying to apprehend what was in front of them.
"... And here I thought we were looking for answers."
"Now we just have more questions."
"Great."
Obtained truth bullet! Gofer project participant list
Miu paused for a moment. "Hold on."
Shuichi pondered as well. The list looked a bit too odd for his liking.
The girl stared at the unknown name for a moment. "Do you think... This guy is the person we're looking for?"
"You know, the mastermind?"
Shuichi jumped. They had theorized the mastermind was not actually someone in the survivor group because Kiyo had not been suspicious of any of them, no matter how much he studied them.
That added to the fact that Kokichi's karma never seemed to have hit them despite all of the horrible things they had done.
But somehow, this felt... wrong.
Even after all this time, he was still praying that the mastermind was not any of his friends. And yet when an unknown name magically shows up and could solve all of his problems, he couldn't bring himself to assume the worst of them.
"I don't think we should automatically assume that... We don't even know who he is."
"But think about it, Shuichi!" Miu exclaimed. "Someone who didn't participate in the killing game with us, who is probably hiding somewhere in the academy! Someone we've never heard of before now, that's him for sure!"
"We don't know that yet! Monokuma could have just added that name on the list to throw us off for all we know!"
Miu paused. "That's..." she frowned, pondering to herself for a moment. "... not actually impossible."
She flipped the pages to see the mysterious person.
A black and white picture was provided, but they did not recognize this face.
The boy had little to no hair and looked rather scrawny and weak. He almost looked younger than them.

Shuichi stared at the profile with concern. "What? He's... dead?"
Miu shook her head. "I don't even know what I expected, but dead...?"
He hummed. "If this profile was made before the game, then there's no way he is the mastermind..."
"Didn't you say we couldn't trust anything Monokuma gives us like two minutes ago?"
Fair.
"But still... I don't think this profile comes out of nowhere."
Miu sighed. "We better find new info because whoever the fuck this guy is, I do not trust him."
He didn't either, but it was too early to assume things.
Obtained truth bullet! Tatsuya Idabashi
They looked around the room, but nothing else was worth inspecting.
"Let's not waste any more time here, the others need us to investigate the rest of the academy." Miu started making her way out.
After going down the stairs -which was still a long way- they walked to the second floor. They quickly met Kirumi and Kokichi investigating the labs as much as they could.
"So? Anything new?" Kirumi asked.
"It's very weird, not gonna lie." Miu replied, blinking. "But for now we should keep investigating, I don't know how much longer Kaito and Monoshi will be able to hold back Monokuma and the monokubs."
Shuichi nodded. "How about you guys?"
"Check your monopads. Kokichi and I managed to unlock the previous files and clues we got from the third investigation, although it's not much." Kirumi explained.
"Sweet!" Miu smiled, taking out the tablet.
And true to their words, the file was available, and it looked exactly the same as the one they had back then.
Monokuma file #3 -updated-
The second victim is Keebo, the ultimate ???
The body was discovered in the entrance hall.
The estimated time of death is 8:00 AM.
The cause of death is unknown.
No injuries were noted in the victim’s body.
Obtained truth bullet! Monokuma file #3
"We're trying to find new clues, but... For now, we got next to nothing..." Kokichi muttered.
Shuichi hummed. "Maybe we should switch partners? Perhaps we'll get a fresh view of the case."
Miu clicked her tongue. "Gotcha." she turned to the mercenary. "Kirumi? Wanna continue with me?"
She nodded. "Of course. Let's go."
The two girls confidently headed further into the corridors. Somehow Shuichi could sense a powerful aura coming from these two.
"So... Where are we headed?" Kokichi took him out of his thoughts.
Shuichi put a finger on his chin, humming. "Where did you guys investigate?"
"Mainly the first and second floor... We might need to cover the basement, though."
He nodded. "Then let's go!"
The duo headed back to the first floor, but immediately after stepping in the main entrance, they stopped in their tracks.
One of the machines outside shot the main door and provoked a large explosion right in front of their faces.
The two coughed as the smoke dissipated. They noticed Monoshi, standing right outside the door, a cannon aimed at the floor.
That's only then that they realized there was a large hole almost right in front of their feet.
Shuichi approached the damage and realized there were stairs leading underground. "What on earth...?"
Monoshi stared at them with his glowing mechanical blue eye. "SECRET-ENTRANCE-UNLOCKED: UNDERGROUND-PASSAGEWAY. ONE-SECRET-ENTRANCE-REMAINING."
The bear immediately stormed off.
Kokichi and Shuichi stared at each other before looking down. "Is this where we're headed now?"
The corridor looked devoid of light, the darkness of the night not helping at all. He could see iron grids and cables, which gave him the impression that this was made as a last-minute addition.
The violinist took a step forward. "We have no choice. There must be answers waiting for us down here."
Kokichi nodded.
The two boys headed down. Hopefully, they would find the solutions to the problems that the investigation itself made them aware of, as well as the truth of Keebo's death.
"It's our goal to seek the truth and we have no time to waste."

waking up with a gasp, she looked up at the monitor mounted to the wall of her room. she winced at the loud volume of the speakers, and at the unnecessary reminder that her life would be cut short tomorrow night. when the tv turned back off, the uneasy feeling in her chest lingered; there wasn’t anybody there to hold her and tell her ‘it’s okay, it’s just the announcement...’ her arm was asleep, and when she looked down, she was hit with yet another reminder of how alone she was, met with the sight of a detective’s jacket... but no detective.
for a good half hour, she tossed and turned on her mattress trying to fall asleep, but to no avail. once she spent the night with shuichi, there was no way she’d be able to spend another one alone again. so, she got up and took a warm shower: one last attempt at relaxing herself enough to fall asleep. (she wasn’t a stinky little bitch-baby like shuicheese across the building). she didn’t care about her face, she wouldn’t have to see it for much longer anyway. she brushed her teeth and combed her hair before changing into some clean clothes. she was going to slip under blanket until she noticed the uniform still sitting there. i should... give it back. it was really just an excuse to go to shuichi’s room. she folded it over her arms and walked over to his door, leaving her mask in her room since everyone would be in theirs anyway. once she got there, though, she couldn’t bring herself to knock. instead, she just stood there with her knuckles barely brushing against the door while she was frozen. eventually, she backed up and folder the clothes neatly and placed them on the floor right in front of his door for him to pick up in the morning.
-
she managed to get a little shut-eye during the night, but not much. she let out a loud groan at the morning announcement before dragging herself out of bed and cleaning herself up for the day. that included putting on her mask. despite it only being two days, out of habit she waited for shuichi to come and walk with her. but, when she stood outside her door and noticed kaede knocking at his door, holding the clothes she had left there last night, she realized that wouldn’t be happening today. she shook her head before heading out the door and towards the dining hall.
when she arrived, she walked into a very weird conversation. rantaro and ryoma seemed to be arguing.
“nobody will be dying, you hear me?”
“you heard the bear, someone’s gotta kick it if you wanna live another day. i’m sayin’ that someone should be me.”
fumiko was a little shocked. why was ryoma trying to sacrifice himself...? he offered a lot to the group, and he helped out with the chores a lot!
“n-no...! k-kill... kill me instead.” fumiko spoke up, making the rest of the room look over and realize she was there. korekiyo seemed to be very interested in the conversation, how brilliant was it to see not one, but two people willing to give up their lives for the sake of others. “i’m- i’m serious.” because you deserve it. rantaro shot her a look that sent a shiver down her spine.
“i said, nobody will be dying. if any of you try anything... so help me god... just- just trust me, alright? don’t do anything stupid.” the green-haired man said, placing a hand on fumiko’s shoulder as he talked before leaving the dining hall. her gaze followed him, and when she turned around she saw a detective and a pianist standing at the doorway, seemingly watching this whole thing go down.
“fuck this, i’m gettin’ somethin’ to drink! if anyone wants to join me, feel free, hmph...” miu said, following in rantaro’s footsteps out the door before opening the entrance to the warehouse. i’ve never gotten drunk before... fumiko thought. she stood there in thought before ultimately deciding to follow the inventor into the warehouse, brushing her shoulder on shuichi’s as she did.
“h-huh? someone actually came?” miu said when she heard the door open. “Y-YOU...? FOR REAL? HAH! i might’ve underestimated you!” the blonde seemed to have known exactly where to go to find alcohol, as if she’s done it before, and she pulled out a bottle of vodka. fumiko stole the bottle from her hands and started downing it like it was nothing.
“w-w-what are you doing....!? H-HOW?” it tasted awful, and she hated it. but being drunk was supposed to be fun, right? so she squeezed her eyes shut and dealt with the pain. the door to the warehouse opened, and fumiko continued drinking. miu was so fucking out of it, she had no idea what was going on. she saw kaede and shuichi at the door and knew what they were going to ask. before she acknowledged them, though, she ripped the bottle from fumiko’s hand.
“give me that,” she mumbled, “WHAT THE FUCK? YOU DRANK HALF-”
“miu!” the pianist shouted, walking towards her, “are the- are they finished...?”
“yeah, yeah, come with me. i’ll give ‘em to ya.” miu stomped out of the room, open bottle in hand, and led the two visitors to her lab. all fumiko did was sit on the ground and rub her head. her whole body felt shitty already from the idiotic way she drank the beverage, the gross taste lingering in her mouth for much longer than she’d liked. it didn’t help that she got maybe an hour of sleep the night prior, which already rendered her ill. what was she thinking? that she would be dead by tomorrow. that’s what she was thinking.
Opening the door to his room, he was met with Kaede, and... his clothes? How did she get his clothes? Voicing his troubled thoughts, he furrowed his brow at her, "W- why do you have my clothes...?" Kaede blinked, "Huh? Wha-?" She looked down at the article she had held in her arms, somehow forgetting she had picked it up. "Oh! I found this outside your door!"
Taking the folded clothing from her hands, he gazed down at it thoughtfully, racking his brain to try and think of why that had been— "C'mon, let's go! You already made me wait long, we have to get Miu's cameras and then you know," She spoke in a hushed tone, a cheeky smile on her face, "Set up the plan."
--
Shuichi found himself balancing on the line of giving her space, and running to her side to check on her—and you know what? It was stupid! He was stupid. What if she got alcohol poisoning? What if she does something rash? Most importantly, why? Throwing away the barrier that prevented him from interacting with the girl he loved, he concluded she had enough space.
God knows if she forgave or not for his bullshit, but that was beside the point she had just downed half a bottle of Vodka. As he practically dashed to the girl sitting on the ground, he left the disgruntled pianist behind—sadly, this hadn’t been the first time he had done that.
Slowing down to a stop, he crouched down across from her, subconsciously trying to see her eyes. It was strange, but he found himself wishing for a flashlight to see if the alcohol had kicked in yet.
Shuichi had to shove down the urge to scold her on drinking alcohol, knowing she didn't enjoy yelling nor was it even an okay thing to do. He had put himself on a permanent hiatus from yelling, he didn't want to see her upset like that, not today, and not ever.
"H- hey, uh..." He flinched at his own shaky and awkward voice, feeling the huge difference to how he talked to her before. Things shouldn't have felt so tense between them, today could've been the last day they— No. No, the plan would work.
"Why did...-" Shuichi pursed his lips; why did he bother asking? He knew why, didn't he? Well, maybe he just... didn't want to believe it. "W- were you drinking because of... what you said earlier? A- about the.." He trailed off, expression slightly saddened as he remembered her self-sacrificial remark.
Clearing his throat, he sat himself down fully on the floor across from her; a safe distance as he was afraid she still didn't want to be too close to him. Forcing words out of his throat, he spoke with feigned determination; despite his soul-crushing fear of 'what if the plan doesn't work?', he tried to remain strong. If not for himself, then for Fumiko, right?
"No one is going to have to die. E- especially not you, never... never you." He tried swallowing the rising lump in his throat, eyes focusing onto the ground as he tried to get rid of his emotions. He cleared his throat again, blinking violently as to rid the tears; he wasn't going to cry in front of her. And especially not Miu. "... S- sorry." Ah yes, the apology he had forgotten to give to her when he yelled near her. This fucking prick-

Kaito Momota: The Man Who Apologised Too Much
Yes, you read that title correctly, and yes, I am 100% serious right now. There seems to be this bizarre myth in this fandom (at least from what I’ve seen, and even from people who appear to like Kaito enough to have thought about him a decent amount) that Kaito believes, out of some kind of toxic masculinity, that men shouldn’t ever apologise, and therefore he never does so himself until right at the end as a supposed sign of his growth. This could not be further from the actual truth about how Kaito feels and acts and grows with regards to the topic of apologising. I am here to thoroughly debunk that ridiculous myth and talk about what’s really going on with Kaito and apologies, which is practically the complete opposite of that and far, far more interesting.
(I should also make it clear that I’m not doing this because I’m trying to insist that Kaito is perfect and without fault. If he actually did have a toxic masculinity thing going on that he needed to unlearn, I’d be totally okay with that, because that’d be him having flaws and therefore being a perfectly good character even if he’s a somewhat less good person as a result. It’s just that these are not remotely the issues Kaito has in canon, and I want to shed some light on what’s actually going on here. It still involves him being very messed up, I promise, just in a completely different way!)
Don’t make yourself feel bad!
The best illustration of Kaito’s principles on apologising is early in chapter 1. After everyone gets emotionally beaten down by the escape tunnel, half the group proceeds to blame Kaede as if she should never have encouraged them to keep trying it in the first place. Kaede agrees that it’s all her fault and apologises to them – but Kaito immediately questions why she’s doing that when she didn’t do anything wrong. Yes, things happened to turn out badly as a result of her encouragement, but she didn’t mean for that to happen when she decided to encourage everyone. It was not a mistake for Kaede to want everyone to try and escape, and she should never be made to feel like she ought to apologise for that. So Kaito tells her, phrased like this is advice he’s regularly given to people in the past, “Listen up. Don’t apologize for something that’s not your fault! It’ll just make you feel bad!”
This line not only very clearly states what Kaito’s principles on this are, but it also shows part of why he feels so strongly about this – because it’s about self-care. Kaito is always trying to encourage people to be kind to themselves and to stay positive, to not wallow in negative feelings when they could be thinking instead about what they can do to make things better. This also extends to not blaming themselves and making themselves feel like something’s their fault when it isn’t, and apologising for said thing is liable to make someone do that. Kaito advocates not apologising when something isn’t one’s fault for the sake of the mental health of the person who would be giving the apology, which deserves to be looked out for just as much as that of the person who would be receiving the apology.
(Also note that Kaito’s saying this to Kaede despite her not being a man, and he doesn’t bring up the concept of manliness at all while doing so, because this whole thing is actually not even remotely about gender to him, as I’ll go into more in a bit.)
This is very similar in principle to the type of advice that Kaito gives Shuichi (even though he never directly mentions apologies while doing so, which is a fact that will be important later). Especially after Kaede’s death, Shuichi’s biggest problem is blaming himself for all the bad things that happened, when all he did was try his hardest to find the truth, which isn’t a bad thing to do at all. Even though his deduction was wrong and the mastermind didn’t come to the hidden door, he tried his best to figure things out with what he had and it’s not his fault he wasn’t quite correct. Even though Kaede was executed because Shuichi uncovered her crime, he sure as hell didn’t want that to happen to her and was just trying to save the maximum number of people from this killing game’s rules. Kaito’s support of Shuichi focuses on trying to stop him from blaming himself about this kind of thing, because he should be pursuing the truth, that’s what they need in a killing game like this, and so he should be proud of himself for being the one who can do that for everyone, rather than beating himself up over it.
And, to skip way ahead to a part of chapter 5 for a moment, this idea is also relevant when Kaito jumps in the way of Maki’s arrow that was meant for Kokichi. Moments later, he learns that the arrow was poisoned, that Kokichi was already dying from her first poison arrow anyway and that he just made things worse by getting himself fatally poisoned too (at least, as far as he knows until Kokichi starts explaining his plan) – but Kaito never once apologises for or shows any regret over making that jump. He didn’t and couldn’t have known the arrows were poisoned, so in that situation, leaping to protect Kokichi was the best thing he could have done and therefore not a mistake. The fact that it turned out the arrows were poisoned and his actions only (apparently) made things worse was not his fault, and at least on this occasion, Kaito understands that and doesn’t go and make himself feel bad over this.
Take responsibility!
Getting back to chapter 1 – the next morning after the tunnel incident, people are still blaming Kaede for it, and Kaito is still arguing that they shouldn’t and she shouldn’t apologise. But this time, Kaede clarifies what she actually did wrong: she got so overly focused on the tunnel that she didn’t consider how everyone was feeling. While simply trying to escape was not a mistake, getting so into it that she overlooked everyone’s exhaustion and kept pushing them past their limits was. When Kaede apologises for doing that, Kaito accepts things and drops the subject.
After all, Kaito also strongly advocates taking responsibility, which means that you should apologise when you did genuinely make a mistake. We can see this in this same chapter 1 conversation when Kaito complains that everyone was blaming Kaede without taking responsibility themselves. Even though Kaede was the most forceful in pushing them into it, everyone else still chose to listen to her and try the tunnel of their own volition. So their resulting exhaustion was still partly on them, and they should be acknowledging their own mistake in doing that, rather than running away from their responsibility by pinning it all on Kaede.
And Kaito is perfectly capable of putting this into practice himself, as we see at the beginning of chapter 2 where he very clearly and openly apologises to Shuichi for punching him at the end of the trial the night before. At the time, Kaito’s words made it sound like he’d punched Shuichi to try and push him to stand up to Monokuma more – but really he just did it because he couldn’t deal with his own pain over Kaede’s death and lashed out. After having a night to calm down and think it over, Kaito realised that he was never going to help like that and he shouldn’t have lost control of himself, so he takes responsibility for his mistake and apologises to Shuichi as soon as he can. He even seems somewhat hesitant when Shuichi readily accepts his apology, as if he was expecting Shuichi to be more upset at his actions than this.
So: Kaito very evidently believes that you should apologise when you have made a mistake. In that circumstance, the you-feeling-bad that comes from apologising is worthwhile, because at least it’ll help you learn from that mistake in order to be able to make better choices in future and hopefully not let it happen again. After all, self-improvement is also a big thing that Kaito’s always trying to encourage! It’s only when you genuinely aren’t in the wrong that he advocates not apologising, because that’ll make you feel bad for no good reason and possibly end up inclined to avoid choices in future aren’t actually bad choices at all. This entire thing from Kaito is all about helping people, just like Kaito is always trying to do.
Since realising this about Kaito and thinking about it a lot, I’ve actually been making something of an effort in my own life to catch myself whenever I’m feeling inclined to apologise for something and ask myself if I really should be doing so according to what Kaito would say. Even if I end up concluding that I did in fact make a mistake that I should have been able to foresee and avoid, which I therefore do apologise for, this lets me properly think about what the mistake was. That way, not only can I keep that mistake in mind to try and avoid in future, but I also don’t end up feeling like anything else about the situation that I couldn’t actually help was somehow my fault as well. This is really emotionally healthy advice that I think everyone should try and follow! Kaito is so good.
(There is admittedly another angle to this. Sometimes, even if person A genuinely didn’t meant to hurt person B, person B was still hurt enough that they deserve an apology just for the sake of acknowledging that the hurt happened and that it mattered even if it was unintentional. In that type of case, I do believe that the person responsible should apologise even if it was genuinely an accident, for the sake of the mental health of the person who was hurt. But in that case, it shouldn’t be an “I’m sorry that I did this” if their actions weren’t inherently wrong; it should be an “I’m sorry that you were hurt because of something I did”. Kaito is never seen addressing this angle, but I really think that’s just because it doesn’t happen to come up, and that if you asked him about this, he’d agree with what I’m saying here.)
Be sure of yourself! (whether or not you’re literally a man)
But what does all this even have to do with manliness, then? Well, the short answer is “really not actually that much”, because the only times Kaito ever brings manliness into this apologising thing is when he’s giving this advice to Gonta.
The most notable example of this is during trial 1. After Gonta’s been cleared of suspicion, Kokichi’s dickery makes Gonta literally apologise for not being the murderer. Naturally Kaito takes issue with him doing that, so he tells Gonta, “A man shouldn’t apologize so easily!”. And the key part of this sentence which apparently some people completely overlook is the “so easily”. Kaito would never have uttered that sentence without that part, because he does not even remotely believe that a man shouldn’t apologise at all. What he’s actually saying here is exactly the same thing he was saying to Kaede – don’t apologise when you’re genuinely not in the wrong. Not being a murderer is obviously not a mistake and not something anyone should ever have to feel like they should apologise for and make themselves feel bad over for no sensible reason! Nobody else would have remotely let themselves be led by Kokichi into apologising for being innocent – but Gonta in particular is so tragically unsure of himself and of what he should be doing that when Kokichi implied he’d done something wrong, he immediately assumed he must have done and apologised without question.
Making this also about being a “man” does seem uncalled for, but Kaito does this for two reasons. One is because being sure of yourself is a big part of what his concept of manliness is about. Kaito believes that, ideally, people should think for themselves and know for themselves what’s right and wrong. If they were wrong, they should acknowledge it and own up to that (taking responsibility is also a big part of this manliness thing for Kaito) – but if they were in the right, they should be able to stand up for themselves and not back down from what they believe in. It’s exactly the same concept I’ve already talked about with regards to apologies, just framed in a way that’s about conviction instead of self-care. Gonta is an incredibly kind person who’s always trying to do the right thing, which Kaito can respect a lot, but it bothers Kaito that someone as good as that has such a hard time seeing what the right thing is in the first place. Gonta ought to be able to have enough conviction to stand up for himself and tell Kokichi, “no, I didn’t do anything wrong, stop trying to make me feel bad for not murdering anyone.”
And note how in the previous paragraph when talking about Kaito’s beliefs on this, I said “people”, not “men”, because neither this nor anything else about Kaito’s concept of manliness (which I’m not going into in any more detail here, because this post is about the apology thing) has anything inherently to do with gender. Literally the only thing gendered about Kaito’s concept of manliness is the word he uses for it. It’s really more like a kind of moral code that he always tries to stick to, one which can apply to anyone regardless of gender, except for some reason or another he somehow ended up using that word to encapsulate it. Unfortunately, this has the side-effect of giving it rather less morally-sound implications to anyone who doesn’t bother to pay any attention to what Kaito’s actually talking about every time he mentions it.
However, Kaito’s concept of manliness is almost always something he only has for himself, because following that code is personally important to him. He doesn’t inflict it on others if he doesn’t think they’d buy into it – after all, the concept of conviction is a lot less important in helping people’s mental health than the concept of self-care is. So the other reason Kaito brings manliness into the apology thing in this context is only because it’s Gonta. Gonta has his own very similar thing about being a gentleman, which isn’t quite the same as Kaito’s concept of manliness, but there is a lot of overlap, especially when it comes to sincerity and integrity. Kaito mentions manliness to Gonta in particular only because he believes that idea might actually resonate with Gonta and help him. Otherwise, he wouldn’t have done, just like he didn’t when telling Kaede not to apologise, and just like he almost never does to Shuichi while giving him advice, even though Shuichi is also male.
Another point at which Kaito tells Gonta that a man shouldn’t apologise so easily (again, so easily; he never omits that part) is during the investigation of case 2. Gonta apologises for being too scared to jump into the water tank to save Ryoma from the piranhas, but Kaito points out that the piranhas would just have eaten him too. Gonta staying put and keeping himself safe was the right thing to do, not a mistake that he should be apologising for and making himself feel bad over when there really wasn’t anything more he could have done to save Ryoma. Later, Gonta apologises again for not watching the tank better because he didn’t see Ryoma in there before the piranhas fell in, and Kaito gives him the same line – because Gonta is so tragically convinced that he’s wrong about everything that he automatically assumes he was mistaken in what he saw and blames himself, without considering that maybe there just genuinely wasn’t anything to see. And the last time Kaito says this to Gonta is at the beginning of chapter 3 when Kokichi tells Gonta, “Nothing good ever happens when you try to help,” and Gonta agrees and apologises… for always trying to help? Obviously that’s not something he should ever apologise for, even if his efforts don’t always work out so well. Kaito would hate it for Gonta to start thinking because of this that he really shouldn’t ever be trying to help!
There’s more on this general idea in that investigation 2 conversation when Shuichi points out that it was impossible to save Ryoma anyway because he was already dead by then according to the Monokuma File, and Gonta admits he didn’t even read the file because he doesn’t think he’s smart enough to understand it. Really, Gonta is not nearly as stupid as he thinks and would have been perfectly able to understand “the cause of death was drowning”. But because he’s so unsure of himself, he didn’t even try, which is exactly the problem with Gonta being this way! Kaito picks up on this and tells him, “If you think you can’t help, then work till you can!” – because, again, Kaito is always trying to encourage people not to wallow in the pain of what they couldn’t do but instead to focus on what they can do going forward.
And that’s exactly the kind of thing that Kaito’s apology principle is all about. Its purpose is to help people stay positive and work constructively to improve themselves. Kaito’s not-actually-gendered concept of manliness is only tangentially connected to this, only even gets brought up when Gonta’s involved, and isn’t really the point at all.
(Heck, if Kaito did consciously think about gender while considering his apology thing, he is smart enough that he’d most likely realise that, in terms of the way people are socialised to behave, it generally tends to be women who apologise too easily and men who don’t apologise enough. So, if anything, he’d frame his usual advice about when not to apologise to be a little more geared towards women, and make more of an overt point about how men should take responsibility instead. The fact that he doesn’t do this is a strong indicator that he just hasn’t taken gender into account at all when it comes to this.)
How Kaito starts to get it wrong
So, having firmly established Kaito’s principles about not apologising when you’re not in the wrong and why he feels so strongly about this, now for the fun part. As in, the part where he repeatedly breaks these principles himself. Everyone should already know how much of a delightful hypocrite Kaito is when it comes to following his own advice, and yep, that applies to this, too.
This begins in chapter 3, as Kaito becomes afflicted by his phobia of ghosts and gets so anxious and nauseous that it completely tanks his mental strength and ability to do much of anything. He apologises so many times during this part of the story: for not being able to hang out with Shuichi, for not being able to be there for him and Maki at training, for not being able to help Shuichi investigate – even though the reason why he can’t do those things is not his fault and he hasn’t done anything wrong. Sure, it sucks that he can’t be there for his sidekicks, but that is not remotely what he wanted to happen and if he had his way and wasn’t so horribly mentally ill then he absolutely would still be there for them. This thoroughly checks out, according to Kaito’s own principles about this, as Not Something To Apologise For.
(…Okay, so it’s slightly more complicated than that since his main issue in this chapter is not a literal sickness but a phobia. That’s something that it’s easier for Kaito to tell himself he should be able to fight against, since it’s all in his head, and therefore it’s his fault if he can’t, right? But, obviously Kaito is trying to fight against it in order to be there for his sidekicks. The only possible mistake here would be him not even trying at all, but Kaito is never not trying. So if he still can’t manage to overcome his phobia despite giving it his best effort, then that isn’t his fault at all.)
But Kaito apologises for it anyway, repeatedly. A lot of these are just casual “sorry”s and “my bad”s peppered into his dialogue that are easy to miss, which might read simply as something he’s doing unconsciously without really thinking about his principles at all. Yet at one point he straight-up approaches Shuichi and makes a whole point of the fact that he thinks he needs to apologise for not coming to training. So it’s not just unconscious – Kaito actively feels like he’s doing something wrong that he ought to take responsibility for and accept feeling bad about so that he can do better in future. Except, how is he ever going to be able to do better in future when his “mistake” is, effectively, “being sick”? Kaito is just going to make himself feel an obligation to be less sick, and that he’s still failing and still ought to feel bad if he continues to be sick anyway, which… well, we know how that’s going to end up for him.
Aaaaand it sure does during chapter 4 as well. Kaito doesn’t apologise nearly as much in this chapter as he did in chapter 3, presumably because he’s able to be there for his sidekicks again and appear on the surface as if he’s totally fine and isn’t doing anything “wrong” at all. But a few unnecessary apologies still slip through here and there. One is when he has to briefly leave a training session for what is totally just using the bathroom and definitely not coughing up any blood. Since using the bathroom isn’t something even Kaito’s warped logic would think of as “doing something wrong”, he’s really apologising for being sick and dying and letting that get in the way of training his sidekicks. Similarly, he apologises at the end of trial 4, after he’s coughed up blood in front of everyone and needs to head back to his room. Again, apologising simply for being visibly ill in front of them. Kaito, no.
The reason Kaito is so convinced that he apparently ought to feel bad and apologise for these things is rooted in the core of his issues, namely his unrealistically perfect standards for heroes. (If you haven’t read that other Kaito analysis post of mine I just linked, you probably should, because it’s going to get increasingly relevant to this post from here on.) A hero like Kaito must be flawlessly strong and never let his sidekicks down no matter what, and anything else is unacceptable. Being weak is a “mistake” for Kaito, even if it’s a type of weakness that isn’t rooted in his choices and is entirely outside of his control. Not being able to be there for his sidekicks is a “mistake” for Kaito, no matter how hard he’s trying to be there and never wanted to be incapable of it. He genuinely feels like he should apologise for these things, because he deserves to feel bad about it, and he needs to do better somehow, even if there’s literally no actual way for him to do so.
Just like every other bit of advice he gives to others, Kaito’s whole principle of not apologising when you’re not in the wrong is about emotional self-care – so it’s only to be expected that he’d be just as bad at following this himself as he is with every other part of his own advice. Because Kaito is horrendous at actually looking after his own well-being when he needs to, emotionally as well as physically.
(And really that’s Kaito’s only actual mistake in this situation: not looking after himself, including not telling his sidekicks what’s going on with him and letting them help. Maybe that should warrant an apology. After all, the reason he avoids them in chapter 3 is less because of his phobia of ghosts itself and more because he doesn’t want them to see that he’s afraid of ghosts. So in that sense, technically he’s skipping out on their training for reasons that actually are him being in the wrong. But that’s definitely never what Kaito thinks he’s apologising for on any of these occasions, now, is it.)
How Kaito gets it wrong in the other direction
Things get even more interesting as we move into chapter 5, in the aftermath of the nightmare that was Gonta’s trial. Shuichi is under the impression that the reason Kaito is avoiding him is because he’s angry at Shuichi for pursuing Gonta’s guilt, almost like he’s wanting Shuichi to apologise for it before talking to him again. But Shuichi asserts privately to Maki that he doesn’t think it would be right for him to apologise when it was the only thing he could do to keep everyone else alive. Of course it’s not Shuichi’s fault that Gonta being the culprit was the truth, nor that Gonta got executed as a result of his crime being uncovered. Shuichi didn’t want any of the awful things to happen and only did what needed to be done to save as many lives as possible.
Sound familiar? Yep, that’s precisely Kaito’s principles on when not to apologise right there. So it is literally not possible that Kaito could actually be expecting an apology from Shuichi; he’d understand perfectly well that Shuichi doesn’t deserve to make himself feel bad when he did what a detective should always do and saved everyone. Credit to Shuichi for being self-assured enough by this point to be able to stand up for what he did and assert that he shouldn’t apologise. The reason he’s so self-assured now is almost certainly thanks to Kaito and all the general advice Kaito has been giving him about not blaming himself and being proud of his detective work. But, because Kaito never specifically mentioned the apology thing while giving Shuichi advice, Shuichi doesn’t consciously realise that Kaito would obviously feel the same way about this. (Shuichi was there when Kaito explained these principles to Kaede in chapter 1, but apparently it didn’t stick with him, perhaps because at the time he wasn’t yet reliant on Kaito.) Which sadly leaves Shuichi floundering in the unresolvable situation of believing Kaito wants him to apologise while refusing to back down on the fact that he shouldn’t, rather than realising that Kaito’s problem is something else entirely that might potentially be fixed just by talking to him.
The problem, or part of it at least, is that Kaito is the one who should be apologising for his actions in Gonta’s trial. He lashed out at Shuichi and made reaching the truth even more difficult and painful for him than it already was, even though he knew deep down that Gonta really was the culprit and that proving this was the only way to save everyone else. Kaito had promised repeatedly before the trial that he’d always be there for Shuichi to help carry his burdens, and yet he actively did the opposite of that when it mattered most.
But Kaito doesn’t apologise for that for most of this chapter. This is the only instance in the whole story in which Kaito breaks his principles on apologising in the opposite way to normal, by not apologising when he is in the wrong. Yet it’s not remotely that he doesn’t even believe he should; of course he knows he should, given how much he cares about taking responsibility. It’s just that the pain he feels over having failed Shuichi so badly in that trial hurts so much that he can’t bear to face up to it and talk about it. He’s essentially being a coward, by running away from that pain, and there’s no way he doesn’t realise that. The reason Kaito avoids Shuichi (at least if I were to frame it in a way that’s about the topic of this post) is because he knows he needs to apologise but can’t.
How Kaito gets it wrong in two ways at once
However, Kaito does not need to apologise for everything he did in the trial. The part where he simply couldn’t bear to face the truth of Gonta’s guilt like Shuichi could is not his fault. That’s just a weakness he has that he can’t help, because he’s Kaito – of course it would be so, so hard for him to accept that someone like Gonta could have committed murder, especially without understanding why or even being able to see any indications of guilt in the amnesiac Gonta’s behaviour. And the part where he felt jealous of Shuichi for being so much stronger than him in being able to face this truth where he couldn’t is also not his fault – Kaito can’t help feeling that way, after all. Apologising for either of those things would be like apologising for being the person he is. The only part that was somewhat under Kaito’s control was the part where he allowed this pain and jealousy to cause him to lash out at Shuichi and actively make things more difficult for him. So that’s the only part which is meaningfully his fault and something he should apologise for.
But it doesn’t seem like Kaito understands that, either. Just like he did when he was apologising for being sick, he appears to believe that simply being weaker than Shuichi is something that counts as a “mistake” on his part and needs to be part of the apology he owes him. The reason I’m so sure that Kaito wants to apologise for this, even though he doesn’t actually do so for the first half of chapter 5, is that he spends the first part of the chapter fixating on a Very Heroic Plan to help everyone escape, in which he makes more of a point of it being his plan than of making it as likely as possible to succeed. Kaito is really doing this is in a desperate attempt to prove himself to Shuichi and show that he can be just as strong and heroic as him after all. An optional line of dialogue from Kaito just before they head into the escape tunnel implies that he may well finally be ready to talk to Shuichi again once they’re out of here – as if he believes that by helping them escape, that’ll be enough to make his apology worth something.
Based on this, it appears that Kaito thinks he needs to make up for being weaker than Shuichi in the trial before he can apologise to him. Which means that the weakness itself is evidently one of the things he’s intending to apologise for. He wants to prove that he’s stronger than that now, so that when he does eventually give the apology he owes, he won’t be emptily apologising for something that he’s still doing. This is the problem with believing you should apologise for things that aren’t your fault and that you couldn’t help – it makes you feel like you should be able to do better when you genuinely can’t. That just leaves you floundering helplessly in your perceived uselessness, and Kaito didn’t feel like he had the right to apologise from that position.
If Kaito didn’t believe that him simply being weaker than Shuichi was part of what he did wrong in the trial, he wouldn’t have felt the need to prove himself like this, and I really believe he might have been able to bite the bullet and apologise for his actual mistake on the first day of chapter 5. But, precisely because he’d convinced himself that he had to apologise for something that he didn’t need to and couldn’t fix, Kaito kept putting off that apology, including the part that he actually should have been apologising for, for what might even have ended up being forever if plot events hadn’t got in the way and changed things.
In short: during early chapter 5, Kaito manages to fuck up his own apology principles in both possible directions at once, both by not being able to apologise when he has made a mistake, and yet also by still believing that he should be apologising for something that genuinely isn’t his fault. Kaito’s issues make him into such a delightful hypocrite and I love it.
How Kaito gets it right again at last
At the end of trial 5, Kaito finally does give Shuichi the apology he’s owed him for the whole chapter. It’s great that he found the courage to do so and didn’t leave things unresolved, but that’s not the part that’s a sign of Kaito’s growth. It was always a given that Kaito would apologise in the end, because he always knew he needed to take responsibility for his mistakes.
The best part of Kaito’s final apology to Shuichi, the part that really does show how he’s grown, is the fact that, while giving it, he doesn’t unnecessarily apologise for anything he shouldn’t. The only thing he apologises for here is being too hard on Shuichi during Gonta’s trial: the lashing out that was his fault because it was under his control. He mentions being jealous of and feeling inferior to Shuichi, but he does not apologise for those feelings that he couldn’t help, because those aren’t his fault – he only brings it up to help Shuichi understand why he lashed out, and nothing else.
After two and a half chapters of internally beating himself up for not being a good enough hero, feeling like he should apologise and he should feel bad for “failing” Shuichi simply due to being an actual human being with weaknesses and struggles, Kaito has finally realised that that’s wrong. He’s accepted at last that things not going as perfectly for him and his heroism as he wished they would isn’t his fault, not if he gave it everything he had the whole way, which of course he always did. It’s an absolutely lovely sign that Kaito’s managed to make at least some progress with his issues about heroes just before the end.
…And then he goes and apologises to Maki, twice, for dying on her – not even in the sense that he’s about to be executed, which could be argued to be his fault, but simply in the sense that his illness is going to kill him no matter what. Of course Maki is hurting, but that isn’t Kaito’s fault and is the last thing he ever wanted to do to her, so it’s not something he needs to make himself feel any worse over than he already does! Granted, one of these is phrased as an “I’m sorry that you’re hurting” type of apology I mentioned earlier that doesn’t frame Kaito himself as responsible for Maki’s pain. But the other is literally, “My bad for making you cry like that,” which, no. God damn it, Kaito, you selfless idiot, you were doing so well.

warnings: mentions of death/dying (obviously), general angst
*✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚: *✧・゚: *✧・゚:*✧・゚:*✧・゚:
Shuichi Saihara
— to say the least, Shuichi is a little shaken up now that he’s gone and you’re... well, not.
— he always told you he’d stay by your side forever, and he feels guilty. he feels like he broke a promise
— but... you talk to him again that first night. you say his name and look straight at him. can you see him? no, it couldn’t be... right?
— of course, once he puts all the pieces together, it all makes sense
— you’re the ultimate spirit medium, for goodness sakes! of course you can see him and speak to him the same way you would any other living person
— after a while, Shuichi stops feeling so guilty for leaving you. partially because it doesn’t feel quite like he’s abandoned you, and also because you reassure him that he didn’t do anything wrong by dying
— i mean, come on, it’s not his fault he got killed! how could you ever hold that against him?
— still, it takes him some time to come to terms with everything.
— though he loves you, he still finds it sad that he can never speak to anyone else ever again. at least, not without your aid.
— but as long as he has you by his side to help him cope... he knows he’ll be alright
— after all, he loves you, and you love him. and that’s enough to give him the strength he needs to keep from falling apart.
Rantaro Amami
— he's still very protective of you, despite the fact he’s merely a spirit now
— he’s always right by your side, no matter what.
— even when you aren’t able to take a moment to talk to him, or even look in his direction, Rantaro is right there
— if he were still alive, the way he now follows you around all the time may seem obsessive and creepy, but you actually appreciate it
— nobody else can see or speak to him but you, which makes his constant presence comforting, in a way
— Rantaro isn’t able to touch you in the same way he could when he was alive, but nonetheless, he still tries
— he’ll try to place his hand atop yours, or wrap his arms around your figure, but he always just passes straight through you
— you find the chill that blossoms on your skin where he touched you comforting; it’s a reminder that even though he’s gone, he’s still there with you
— it breaks his heart that he can’t truly be with you, but he tries not to focus on his own problems too much
— after all, your happiness is much more important to him than his own; you are his priority
— you’ll have to remind him that it’s okay for him to be sad, and that he shouldn’t bottle up his own emotions to be there for you
— he’ll want to keep being the person to take care of you, and watch out for you, but he needs you to be that person for him
Kokichi Ouma
— you didn’t really think Kokichi would start behaving himself just because he’s dead, did you?
— honestly he uses the fact only you can see and speak to him to his advantage
— good luck trying to keep your cool around other people while he’s off being a clown right in front of you
— but of course, he’s not all fun and games
— i mean... he’s dead. and that sucks
— he probably won’t show it, at least not right away, but he doesn’t like the feeling of separation between you two
— sure, he’s still around, but not like before. before, he could surprise you with a kiss or a suffocating hug, but he just can’t do that anymore
— it hurts. really bad.
— but he knows he’ll be okay. he know’s he’ll get used to it someday, as long as he has you with him to cheer him up when he gets especially sad
— you’re his sunshine, and he may not show it, but he needs you. so don’t leave him all alone, okay?
Gonta Gokuhara
— lets be honest... Gonta has the hardest time of the bunch adjusting to being nothing more than a spirit
— you’ll likely have to give him a lot of comfort. he’s confused, and he misses being able to be with you for real :(
— the hardest part for him is no longer being able to touch you
— he longs to feel your lips press gently against his cheek, to lay in your lap as your hands comb through his hair... he’d give anything to hold you in his arms again...
— unlike Rantaro, he’s not content with merely passing through your body when he makes contact with you
— it just... upsets him. it’s a cruel reminder that his life ended, and that he will never get to hold you, kiss you, and just love you the way he could before his life ended
— be patient with him, please... he’ll adapt eventually... but it could take a while
— just make sure to remind him how much you love him, he’ll need a lot of reassurance and comfort from you
Kaito Momota
— surprisingly, Kaito adapts to the situation pretty well
— if he is struggling with any sort of major emotions, he’s doing a stellar job of hiding it from you. and you hate that
— you don’t totally believe him when he says he’s okay, or when he tells you not to worry about him
— you know him better than that. it doesn’t make sense to you. he just died for crying out loud! he can never follow his dreams, never have the future he always wanted with you
— and you don’t understand how he can just shrug all that off and continue being your boyfriend like normal
— you confront him about it one night. he’s laying on his back, hovering beside you as you read (Kaito loves being able to float around in midair. perks of being a ghost, right?)
— "how can you be okay?" you blurt out suddenly. he looks at you, confused.
— you continue, asking all the questions that had been gnawing at you for days, and when you finally finish, he just laughs
— "of course i’m upset. but it’s a man’s job to protect the ones he loves! and being there for you is much more important than staying upset about this." he explains
— you can’t help but feel a little stupid. he’d always put you first, always prioritized your needs over anyone else’s, even his own. and he wasn’t about to stop just because he died
— fortunately for you, he isn’t upset with you sort of asking him why the hell he wasn’t a huge, depressed mess.
— in fact, he thinks it’s really sweet that, despite the fact you should be worried about yourself so you don’t end up joining him in the afterlife, you spent your energy fussing over him
Korekiyo Shinguji
— with Kiyo, not much changes. at least, not on his end.
— he’s very fascinated by the mere notion of being a spirit and has the time of his life unlife getting used to his new body
— at first you’re happy for him. i mean, it’s good that he’s not struggling, right? shouldn’t you want him to feel okay? you wouldn’t want him to suffer in sadness like you, right?
— but he’s so enthralled with his new state of being he... almost forgets to check up on you
— and even when he does spend time with you, it almost feels like all he does is talk about himself and the new things he’s discovered about being a spirit
— it’s frustrating, to say the least. you know you didn’t truly lose him, but it feels like you did
— when you finally tell him that you feel like he’s changed, he’s confused
— when Kiyo hears you say how much you miss him, how you feel like he’s so different now, he’s kinda just like ???????
— how could he be different? it’s still him, don’t you know that?
— after a long night of reflecting while you sleep (not needing rest is one of the many perks of being a spirit), Kiyo realizes what he’s been doing wrong
— you used to love when he’d talk to you endlessly about his work, his research, etc.
— but now, when he’d ramble on for hours about new things he’d learned thanks to being a mere spirit, it was just another painful reminder to you that he was dead. that he was gone.
— the moment he gets a chance, he apologizes to you. it’s a bit of an emotional moment for both of you, being the first time either of you have confronted the end of Kiyo’s life head on
— he tries to hold you, but all you feel is an icy chill where his flesh would have met yours, but oddly enough... it doesn’t make you feel worse
— you’d anticipated another tsunami of your own tears after Kiyo’s body passed through yours, but it’s comforting, albeit in a morbid way
— he’s gone, but you haven’t lost him. and you’ll never lose him; he’ll remind you of that every day if he has to
Ryoma Hoshi
— man, if you thought ryoma’s attitude and general outlook on life was depressing before, you’ve got a big storm coming
— for a long time after his death, he’s very... cold. to everyone and everything
— he’s upset. but not because he’s dead, but because he can’t protect you anymore
— being there for you, to defend you and keep you safe, had become his raison d’être, so to speak
— he knows you can still see him and talk to him. he’s not stupid. but he pretends he doesn’t hear you at first. part of him thinks that if he shuts you out long enough, you’ll come to your senses and realize you should be upset with him
— but you never do. despite what he thinks he deserves, you never turn on him, never give up on him, never stop loving him
— with time, he’ll come around and start learning to cope with his own death, and the fact you outlived him
— and you’ll be there with him every step of the way (whether he likes it or not)

Setting the truth free.
[Shuichi, Maki and Himiko’s (And Kaede’s) apartment. 10:09pm]
Tumblr media
...*sigh*
*After being let out of the nurses office, Shuichi returns home and slumps down onto his bed. Like Kyoko said, he needed stitches, so is careful not to break them.
Tumblr media
I did it...I saved her...
Tumblr media
(Now comes the hard part...How long can I keep this up? Those guys have tried to take her away twice now, and if that’s true, then there’s nothing stopping them a third time...)
*Knock* *Knock*
Tumblr media
Come in!
*The door opens.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Kaede...
Tumblr media
Shuichi, I...You don’t have to apologize to me...
Tumblr media
It’s my fault for getting kidnapped. I know I was mad but...I probably shouldn’t have run away...
Tumblr media
Because of that I got taken and you came after me, now you’ve got all these stitches, and Miu is having to spend tonight in the hospital...
Tumblr media
Hey, going after you and saving you was MY choice. One I felt outweighed everything else.
Tumblr media
And if I’d told you the truth of matters right from the get go, this wouldn’t have happened.
Tumblr media
But...why didn’t you?
Tumblr media
Because I know how you are Kaede. You’re kind-hearted, you’re good-natured and you’re incredibly selfless...
Tumblr media
But that selflessness is your biggest weakness. I knew if I told you about what happened with Rantaro right away, you’d be torn apart inside...
Tumblr media
Though I guess that happened anyway...
Tumblr media
I remember rolling the shotput...down the vent...and then finding his body...
Tumblr media
But I already told you. You didn’t do it. You didn’t kill Rantaro. You’ve never killed anyone.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
But...You...
Tumblr media
You definitely tried to...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
What really happened?
Tumblr media
Ok, I’ll explain absolutely everything, so you might want to sit down.
*Kaede carefully sits down on the edge of Shuichi’s bed. Shuichi heaves himself up and sits next to her. He instinctively takes her hand to comfort her.
Tumblr media
When we first got into the killing game, Monokuma provided us with a motive to murder. He told us that if one of us could execute the perfect crime and get away with it withing a certain space of time, they could leave the school without a class trial. He called it “the First Blood Perk.”
Tumblr media
However, thanks to you, we were able to avoid any motivation to kill. Not only did you encourage us, and give us hope...
Tumblr media
You even took some abuse and mean words from people. Everyone was upset about the situation and wanted someone to blame, so they took it out on you...
Tumblr media
...I probably shouldn’t have forced people to do what they didn’t want to...That’s on me...
Tumblr media
Well, your efforts weren’t in vain...at first.
Tumblr media
Monokuma began to get desperate, so he introduced an additional motive. If nobody killed before the time limit ended...every last one of us would die...
Tumblr media
Oh come on! How is that fair!?
Tumblr media
It’s not. But that motive ended up being the mastermind’s downfall in the end...
Tumblr media
The mastermind?
Tumblr media
In response to the additional motive, I came up with a plan in the hopes of finding and neutralizing the mastermind hiding among us.
Tumblr media
And I invited you to help me...Unaware that you had your own plan in mind...
Tumblr media
...I...My own plan?
Tumblr media
The more I told you about my plan, the more you thought it wasn’t going to work. We were putting all our eggs in one basket after all, so...You thought of a way to neutralize the mastermind and make it so the killing game couldn’t keep going.
Tumblr media
My plan involved setting up several automated cameras and putting a security sensor on a door to the masterminds secret lair in the library. When they moved the bookcase and opened the door, the camera would go off and their image would be captured.
Tumblr media
But...While we were setting everything up, you grabbed a heavy shotput ball from the storage center, turned the flash on one of the cameras back on to get the Mastermind into place, and then rolled it down the vent in the classroom we were hiding in. The vent connected to the library, and being the one who discovered the door, it would have hit Rantaro on the head and killed him instantly...
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Wait...it WOULD have?
Tumblr media
Yeah. The shotput ball missed. By quite a large margin actually.
Tumblr media
Then how-!?
Tumblr media
Tsumugi.
Tumblr media
Tsumugi?
Tumblr media
The real culprit was Tsumugi Shirogane, The Ultimate Cosplayer, who from the start was the mastermind we were looking for. She entered the library through the hidden door, thus avoiding any of the cameras we had set up and they took the opportunity to bludgeon Rantaro to death and allow you to take the blame.
Tumblr media
In the end, we all fell for Tsumugi’s lie. Even you thought you’d killed him. That’s why you remember his body like that. You thought you killed him, but you didn’t.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Is...that everything?
Tumblr media
Yes...I hope so. You readily accepted punishment for what I did. You told me to do whatever it took to solve the case. You made me march you off towards your death...
Tumblr media
I’m so sorry...I’m so sorry for everything...
Tumblr media
Kaede...
Tumblr media
But...stop making me sound like I’m a good person. I’m a bad person! I-I’m the worst person!
Tumblr media
Kaede, stop...! No one can blame you for just wanting to save all our lives!
Tumblr media
It doesn’t matter if I wanted to help everyone or not. I should never have even considered murder an option! And I used you! I used your plan to create a murder!
Tumblr media
You didn’t kill anyone!
Tumblr media
BECAUSE I GOT LUCKY! The fact I was willing to kill someone is what’s important, not why! It doesn’t matter why!
Tumblr media
Yes it does! It matters to ME! It matters to EVERYONE!
*Shuichi grabs her shoulders and shakes her.
Tumblr media
You wanted to kill The Mastermind to protect everyone and save our lives, and we all appreciate that! You actually succeeded for the most part...Because of you the First Blood Perk went unclaimed and we all lived to see another day.
Tumblr media
Only to die another...
Tumblr media
You’re selfless. Too selfless. But that’s not always a bad thing. You wanted to protect everyone and save everyone who you only knew for a few days.
Tumblr media
Because that’s the kind of person that you are Kaede!
*Shuichi begins to cry as he pulls Kaede into a very strong hug.
Tumblr media
I was terrified you know!? Throughout the whole trial, I didn’t want any of it! I was so scared!
Tumblr media
But...I never forgot.
Tumblr media
And you don’t know how happy I was to hear that you were ok.
Tumblr media
...Shuichi, I’ve put you through so much...I don’t deserve to be called your friend.
Tumblr media
Really? Because I think you’re the kind of friend I need right about now.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
*sniff* *sob* Aaaaahh...!
*Kaede breaks down and begins to cry into Shuichi’s shoulder.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Are you alright now?
Tumblr media
Yeah, I...I think I’m good...
Tumblr media
If...If I ever meet Rantaro again. I’ll tell him I’m sorry.
Tumblr media
I might not have killed him but I almost did...So I’ll apologize for that...
Tumblr media
I see...
Tumblr media
And...I can’t really say for sure if I forgive Tsumugi or not...
Tumblr media
On one hand she framed me, but on the other I’m having a hard time believing she’s just some demonized murderer...
Tumblr media
Heh...as thoughtful as ever.
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Um...Shuichi?
Tumblr media
Yes?
Tumblr media
To be honest, finding out the truth isn’t the only reason I came in here...
Tumblr media
I...I wanted to wait until tomorrow when you were feeling a little less painful, but...I...
Tumblr media
I can’t sleep...I close my eyes and I just see that horrible image...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Kaede...
Tumblr media
So much has happened today...Too much...Can I rest here with you?
Tumblr media
You want to bring your futon in here? I don’t mind but my bed kind of takes up most of my room. There’s not a lot of space on the flo-

Tumblr media
Oh...
Tumblr media
I-I’m not trying to IMPLY anything! I-I-I would never do anything “dangerous” especially with how hurt you are b-but I-I-I-I-
Tumblr media
...
Tumblr media
Please Shuichi...I’m scared...
Tumblr media
...*sigh* Things really must be rough if you’re resorting to this.
Tumblr media
You’re more than welcome to rest with me.
Tumblr media
Thank you...I promise, I will never tell Tenko about this.
Tumblr media
Thanks. If you do, I’ll be singing soprano...
Tumblr media
Oh but...just be careful of my stitches, ok?
Tumblr media
O-Ok...
*Shuichi turns the light off and he and Kaede climb into the bed together. After a few minutes, the pianist drifts off to sleep. As she does, Shuichi begins to feel a tight grip on himself.
Tumblr media
*sigh*
Tumblr media
It’s going to be a long night...

(THIRD PERSON)
Shuichi listens half-heatedly as the Monokubs blabber relentlessly- about subjects completely unrelated to the nighttime announcement, no less. He sighs, relived once the staticky message ends with a few small chimes.
The Blunette stands, placing a purely white mug down atop the dining hall table. Shuichi will surely miss that sweet tasting tea, though he supposes heading back to his dorm is the safest option.
Shuichi had expected a quiet, undisturbed walk down the vine-covered hallways; assuming his fellow Ultimates returned to their rooms. But, what he recived was more chaotic than relaxing.
“Hey, hey! Saihara! Whatcha up to, huh? Prowling around the halls.. so late, no less. You gave me quite the scare.”
A not-so pleasant surprise greeted Shuichi that night; Kokichi Oma, overdramatic as always.
“Oh.. s-sorry, I guess-“
“-No! You misunderstand me... and you’re supposed to be a detective!” Kokichi giggles, signature laugh bouncing around the room. Shuichi just blinks, unable to reply.
“I was actually hoping to run into you!” Kokichi exclaims, smiling brightly with a thumbs up proudly displayed. Shuichi quirks an eyebrow, somewhat suspicious of the purple-haired male.
“R-Really-?”
“-Nope! That was a lie.. though, I’m not particularity bothered to have seen you, Shuichi.”
Shuichi swallows, suddenly overwhelmed by Kokichi’s genuine tone and the use of his first name. He might’ve even been blushing, because Kokichi’s intent expression becomes impure with mischief.
“Oops! I’m being unusual, aren’t I? ‘Must be, ‘cause you’re bright red!” Kokichi jokes, only intensifying Shuichi’s embarrassment. He looks away, attempting to conceal his face from The Supreme Leader.
“Anyways... what are you doing, Kokichi? Shouldn’t you be going that way?” Shuichi asks, motioning behind Kokichi with a flick of his wrist. Kokichi turns his head, glancing down the hall he’d come out of with a shrug.
“Well, that doesn’t matter.. y’know, ‘cause we’re hanging out now!” Kokichi grins, taking Shuichi’s hand. Shuichi flushes, feeling Kokichi interlock their fingers.
“What? Really?” Shuichi inquires, in disbelief. Kokichi drags Shuichi behind him, nodding happily.
“Mhm! C’mon! Let’s go to your room, Shumai!” Kokichi announces, leading the pair outside.
“S-Shumai..? Where’d that nickname come from?” Shuichi questions, nervousness only further intensifying whilst awaiting Kokichi’s answer.
Though, The Detective doesn’t earn one- Shuichi is met with giggle filled silence. He just hopes Kokichi has good intentions, knowing the Supreme Leader could potentially murder him.
“Unlock the door.”
Shuichi hesitates.
“Kokichi...”
“Trust me, Shuichi.”
Kokichi pushes Shuichi back, The Blunette falling back onto his bed. He attempts to speak, though the words are trapped in his throat. Kokichi is atop The Detective, pinning him down, smirking.
“Hm... this is just like a couple days ago, huh? When you were unconscious.. I was so worried, Shuichi. How could you do that?”
“I... I don’t know.”
“Oh, hush- say you’re sorry.”
But, before Shuichi could apologize, Kokichi presses his thin lips against Shuichi’s own. Shuichi’s eyes widen, emotions wrecking themselves, tangling his stomach into a knot.
Kokichi breaks it.
“What was that?” Shuichi pants, incredibly disturbed, scared. Kokichi sits back, giving Shuichi more space.
“I don’t know, ‘figured I wouldn’t forgive you with just an apology,” Kokichi says, far too casually. Shuichi has finally caught his ragged breath, cheeks still considerably pink.
“Well? How was it?” Kokichi wonders, reminding a dazed Shuichi of what had just occurred. He touches a finger to his trembling lips, feeling them tingle.
“I... I don’t understand..” Shuichi mumbles, swallowing. Kokichi giggles, blushing a little, himself.
“What I’m asking is.. can I kiss you again?”
(A/N): PT2? 😳

oh! oh! could i ask for an imagine of the v3 boys thinking that their s/o was cheating on them (and being really torn up about it), but then they find out that it wasn't real or that they read too much into something? thanks, and good luck with the blog!
Cheating?
Here it is! Super sorry for the wait, it’s just that I was very inspired.
Tumblr media
I absolutely loved writing this, thank you so much! I’m sorry it’s so long I have no self control :c
Mod Dia
Shuichi Saihara
Shuichi liked to believe he didn’t have to worry about that kind of thing because he wants to trust his partner, but he couldn’t help being suspicious.
You started focusing a lot more on your appearance, went out much frequently than you used to without any given explanation and seemed unreachable.
He tried to voice his concerns about it once but you just shook it off, doubling his worries.
As a detective, a big part of the cases he dealt with were of infidelity between spouses so he knew your recent behavior might be an indicator of you having an affair. He felt ashamed of having to think about his s/o like that so he decided to confront you definitively as soon as possible.
“S/o, do you have a minute?”
“Sure, what’s up?” You asked seating next to him. He served you tea and seemed nervous, you could tell immediately it was a serious matter.
“I noticed you began worrying a lot about how you look recently.” He said. “You are going out almost every day and acting distant towards me.“
He couldn’t get himself to look you in the eyes as he said the following, proceeding to look at his teacup and rubbing its handle instead:
“Please tell me the truth.” He paused and took a deep breath. “I don’t want to accuse you of anything, but… Are you cheating on me?”
“…What?”
You were unsure of what he was talking about, but then it hit you and you started laughing.
“Of course not!” You said trying to recompose yourself. “I just… I feel like I’ve gotten too comfortable since we started dating. I want to look my best for you so I’ve started working out and caring a bit more about how I look.”
He looked at you and released a sigh of relief before quickly diverting his gaze, unable to sustain eye contact with you. “…I’m so sorry.”
He felt terrible, of course you wouldn’t do something like that, not to him… You love him way too much.
He feels like he doesn’t deserve you.
Expect lots of apologies from him and him being kind of awkward for some time.
He’ll tell you that you’re gorgeous and don’t need to change anything and he’ll be more affectionate once he forgives himself. Let’s be honest, he’ll stay angry at himself a lot longer than you.
Kaito Momota
You seemed to be around less than usual and hung out frequently with his best friend, much to Kaito’s dismay.
You were happy so he didn’t say anything. Obviously, he liked that you got along with his sidekick, but his intuition told him something was off, as you were hanging out a lot without him.
He didn’t want to doubt either of you, he trusted you and Shuichi so much but…
Progressively, he was getting less and less attention to the point it were fewer the times you were together than the ones you were out.
He decided to ask you to stay at his house one night and he was overjoyed when you accepted.
After having dinner, you two were on his bedroom watching a movie, his arm around you and your head resting on his shoulder, proximity he had longed for.
Your phone, which was on the bedside table next to him, vibrated indicating that you got a new message. He instinctively reached out to give it to you but you yanked it out of his hand before he could see who was texting you.
“I-I’m sorry, I didn’t mean to-” You quickly apologized realizing what you had done.
“… S/O, I think we have to talk.” Kaito sounded hurt. “You barely go out with me anymore.”
“Uh?” This took you off guard.
“I would appreciate it if you’d just be honest with me.” He added. “Do you even love me anymore?”
“What? Of course I do!” You said. “I don’t understand where this is coming from.”
“You’re always with my friends, even when I’m not there. Especially Shuichi…” He rubbed his neck in frustration. “If you’re hiding anything it would be better to just tell me.”
“You…” You bit your lip. “You found out?”
“Are you fucking serious, S/O?” His eyes widened. “After all this time we’ve been together… and with my best friend?”
“Wait, what? What the heck are you talking about?” You said. “I was just asking if you had found out about the surprise party we were planning for you.”
“…Uh?” God, he was so confused.
“Wait, you thought I was cheating on you with Shuichi?”
“No.. I-”
“You totally did, didn’t you? Don’t worry, you’re still my one and only!” You laughed.
He would quietly apologize and hug you for a bit, telling you he shouldn’t have doubted you.
You just smiled at the sight of this cute blushing mess and kissed his cheek, reassuring him that you weren’t mad and that it’s natural to think like that sometimes…
Please don’t talk about this in front of Saihara or anyone for that matter, he’ll feel awful :(
Ryoma Hoshi
Honestly, he wasn’t surprised.
He knew you couldn’t be serious about your relationship. Someone like you couldn’t ever be happy with a murderer, right?
There was suddenly less money on your bank account and you never seemed to be home recently.
He took it has a sign of you not wanting him anymore and didn’t feel the need to bring it up, he just assumed you were with someone else.
All that was left now was waiting for the moment when you would break up with him, and so he did.
He waited for you to tell him you liked another person, for you to tell him how worthless he was to you, but that moment never came.
The times you did come home you hugged him so tightly and whispered him sweet words of love, offering him comfort and affection in your arms.
He couldn’t bring himself not to love you, he adores you… You give him hope.
He decided to believe in you. Even if it seemed unlikely, he hoped for a chance you were still his and that you still loved him.
So he confronted you about it.
“My dad has been very sick, Ryoma.” You explained. “The hospital fees are expensive so I had to lend some money; I couldn’t let my poor mother pay for it all alone. I’m so sorry I didn’t say anything before, I just couldn’t find the timing.”
“…I’m sorry I doubted you, kiddo.” He patted your back. “And I’m sorry I couldn’t see it because I was so focused on myself. I really am the worst, uh?”
“That’s not true at all.” You said. “It’s my fault for not telling you.”
You told him that you were never so sure you loved anyone more than him and for him not to doubt that. He let out a small chuckle and held you close, calling you naïve.
The next day you went together to visit your father.
On your right hand you held a bouquet you would give to your dad, and on your left you held Ryoma’s hand, reassuring him that you would always be together.
Rantaro Amami
It was summer break so Rantaro assumed he would get to spend many time with you.
Having not seen you for some weeks, when you finally came to visit him he was really happy!
He received you warmly and served you a drink while you two talked.
“I’ve missed you so much!” You said making circles on the back of his hand with your finger. “I’m sorry for being away for so long.”
“It’s alright.” He took another sip of his tea. “You could have called me at least once though.”
“I’m sorry, babe.” You started fidgeting with your hands nervously. “But now I’m here, and I miss being intimate with you…”
This took him by surprise. You weren’t usually this forward but he isn’t complaining now, is he?
“Let’s see what we can do about that…” He smirked.
(…)
“S/o, how do you feel?”
He sat next to you on his bed and kissed your forehead.
“Great.” You smiled. “God, you’re so damn amazing. I love you, you know?”
“Yeah, I do.” He chuckled. “You were quite loud about it some minutes ago.”
“You little…” You rolled your eyes and laughed.
“I’m going to make you something to eat, stay here.” He said getting up and patting your head.
“No don’t go-”
You had accidentally called him the name of another guy. Rantaro was shocked.
“What did you just say?” He turned to look at you again.
“Uh, I’m sorry Taro I just mixed up the names.”
After being on his own for several weeks he couldn’t help but wonder what you had been doing while he wasn’t there.
You had been so distant and now suddenly you wanted him. But you had called him another man’s name…
“S/o,” He took a deep breath. “Have you been cheating on me?”
Straight to the point, as usual.
He would normally prefer to go to another room and chill out before talking to you but this wasn’t exactly one of those situations where that was an option.
“What? No. No, of course not!”
“Why did you call me by another name then?” You could see it was really bothering him. “You’ve been away for so long and then you come home for this?”
“Listen…” You sighed. “I mistakenly called you by my brother’s name, I’m sorry ok?”
“Why you would mistake me for your brother I have yet to understand.”
“My brother came to visit so that’s why I have been a little distant.” You explained.
“You’re always so cool and paternal… You can’t really blame me for my mistake, can you?”
Do you know who just went from mad to puffed-up? Rantaro, Rantaro did.
He admitted to messing up and then laid down again, resting his head on your chest.
You ran your hand over his hair, in a gentle caress. “Ugh, you’re too heavy!”
He laughed. “I’m sorry for what I did, that was really stupid of me.”
“I know you only did it because you care.” You said. “And it’s kinda my fault too, so there’s that.”
“That’s true.”
“Well, thank you.”
“The first part, dummy. I love you.”
Gonta Gokuhara
He trusts you. 100%. Not even a single shred of doubt.
So when you started hanging out with some new people he thought nothing of it. S/o made some new friends? Cool!
His own friends were the ones that made him hesitant. They told him his partner was being a little too friendly with the new friends. But aren’t you supposed to be friendly with friends?
At first he was confused. Then he was sad. And then dubious.
If everyone told him you were hanging out a lot with those new people and that he should be suspicious, he couldn’t help but to be skeptic.
He decided to ask you about it as soon as possible, he didn’t want to doubt you any longer!
You two sat down at the sofa and you asked him what he wanted to talk about.
“S/o loves Gonta, right?”
“Of course I do.” You said.
“Gonta’s friends told Gonta s/o might be…” He seemed to be choosing his words carefully. “Mating with other people.”
“What? Where did that come from?” You didn’t know whether to laugh or be mad. “I couldn’t do that! You’re my partner, right?”
“Gonta knew s/o wouldn’t do that!” He crushed you with a bear hug.
Well, that was rather easy.
Kokichi Ouma
After passing on two dates with him saying you were too busy you finally agreed to go out with him.
Kokichi tried his best to keep the conversation going but you seemed to be more interested in your phone than in him.
Your eyes lit up every time you received a message and you would quickly type your reply with a smile.
He had already finished his food and was waiting for you, but you hardly looked away from your device. He was starting to get bored so he decided to mess with you.
“So, s/o I was thinking I should shave my head.” He said.
“Huhum, ok.”
“You’ll do it with me, right?”
“Yeah, whatever you want darling.” Ouma sustained his laugh as you continued typing.
“What about getting a matching tattoo on the butt?”
“That sounds awesome.”
“Are you even listening to me?” He pouted. “I thought we were on a date.”
You put your phone away. “I’m sorry, Kokichi. I really haven’t paid much attention to you recently, have I?”
“Oh, don’t you say.” He rolled his eyes. “Let’s go home! I’m boreeeed.”
“I still haven’t finished my meal.”
“Too bad.” He got up and started dragging you to the exit. “Maybe you shouldn’t have been on your phone.”
When you got home you decided to take a shower to avoid your bratty boyfriend’s calls for attention for a bit.
As you were waiting for the bathtub to fill, the door of the bathroom suddenly burst open.
“Oh, I found s/o.” Kokichi said seemingly unfazed by the fact that your only garment at the moment consisted on a pink towel.
“W-what are you doing here?!” You said throwing the nearest thing in-reach at him, which turned out to be a shampoo bottle.
“Ouch.” He furrowed his brows. “I came to pee, what the hell did you think?”
You two started arguing, first it was because he didn’t know how to knock but quickly things took a rather serious turn.
“You’re avoiding me like I have the plague!” He yelled. “You’re always on your phone looking so happy and when you’re with me you don’t even pay me any attention. I want to be with you but you obviously don’t.”
“Look, can we please discuss this some other time?” You closed the tap. “I just want to take a bath right now.”
“No need, I’m almost done.” He said. “And what are you even pampering yourself for? Are you gonna meet up with some new boyfriend and leave me alone again?”
“What the fuck?” You started tearing up. “Do you even know how much I love you?”
He immediately regretted what he said.
Kokichi stepped closer to you and wiped your tears with his thumb.
“I may not have been the best partner… and given you less affection than you deserve,” You muttered. “But I would never do that to you.”
“… I’m sorry.” He said.
Both of you stayed quiet for a while until you felt his hand reach out to yours. “It’s my fault.” He said rubbing the back of your hand.
“I always end up saying bad stuff to people that don’t deserve it.”A single tear threatened to fall from his eye but was quickly wiped away and replaced with a sad smile. “That’s why I was sure you would dump me.”
It was unusual for him to expose his feelings so openly to anyone. He felt vulnerable but also happy that he was able to do it with you.
You ended up bathing together and comforting each other after that.
He washed your hair and you just hugged him close for a bit reminding him that he’s very important to you.
Your relationship wasn’t very affected by this incident, if anything it just got you closer.
Korekiyo Shinguji
For the past two weeks you had consistently arrived at home later than usual.
Korekiyo was starting to get a bit annoyed. He would comprehend it if you told him exactly what was making you stay out until so late, but you always made something up in the spot and hoped he wouldn’t notice.
This time, Kiyo had already made dinner when you finally appeared.
“May I know what caused your delay this time, my love?” He asked.
“Something just came up and I had to stay at school for a bit more.” You said playing with the food on your plate.
“Alright then…” He didn’t seem convinced but didn’t insist more.
When you were finished you went to your room to watch TV while Kiyo sat at his desk table, writing about his latest trip and the different cultures he got to contact with.
After some time, you got bored so you got up and wrapped your arms around his neck and hugged him from behind.
“Come play with me Kiyo…”
“…S/o.” He chuckled.
You got closer to give him a kiss but before you had the opportunity he stopped you and said: “Why do you smell like men’s cologne, darling?”
He closed his hand around your wrist and pulled you to him before you had time to react.
“Is this…” He picked a section of your hair and analyzed its scent. “… Amami’s perfume?”
“W-what? Of course not.”
He looked at you dead in the eye sending chills through your body.
“Well… yeah.” You knew it would be stupid to try to fool him. Rantaro was one of his best friends at school, of course he would know. “I-I can explain though.”
“Why, I’d love to hear it.” He seemed mad. Korekiyo is usually so enigmatic and from the little bits of skin he does show you can never quite tell what he’s thinking, but that wasn’t the case now. If looks could kill…
“I started to go with Amami-kun to the school library after class.” You said. “I’m not doing well at school recently…”
Your boyfriend stayed quiet during your explanation, hearing what you had to say without interrupting you.
“He offered to help me study because he saw that I was having difficulties. I’m sorry I didn’t tell you before, it’s just… I didn’t want you to think I’m dumb.” You continued. “The reason I smell like him it’s just because he hugged me goodbye. That’s all…”
His expression softened.
“I offer you my apologies, S/O.” He calmly said. “Please do know that the next time you need help you can ask me, if you’d like.”
You were happy he heard and comprehended your explanation and he was glad his beautiful s/o still loved him.
You two shared a long embrace and he reminded himself not to jump to any conclusions before hearing what you had to say.
K1-B0
When he had his suspicions he decided to confront you right away!
It was more important voicing his concerns immediately than being torn up about it and doing nothing.
That doesn’t mean he wasn’t sad or nervous though.
He wanted to take you to a place you could feel relaxed in and not be interrupted so he decided to take you out for ice cream.
He waited for you to finish eating and then said: “S/o, I’m afraid you might have not been honest with me.”
“What exactly are you talking about, Keebo?”
“I noticed sudden changes on your behavior and close proximity with this one person.” He said. “I’m concerned you might have been unfaithful to me.”
“I don’t want this to be true however, so please prove me wrong.” He continued.
“Oh, so that’s what you wanted to talk about.” You said. “You have nothing to worry about, that person is my best friend’s boyfriend, I can guarantee you I have zero interest in him.”
“Is that so?” He seemed suspicious still. It was kind of cute seeing him jealous.
“How could I ever trade you for another person, you’re my sweet adorable boyfriend!” You got up and sat on his lap, flooding his face with soft kisses.
“S/o, please stop!” He was so flustered, poor boy. “People are watching!”
You teased him a bit more, giggling, but then apologized.
After some time you decided it was best to leave the ice cream parlor as Keebo was getting shy about the stares people were giving you.
He didn’t doubt you any longer, which was good. But now he was also mad at you for a different reason, oopsie.
Well, you’re certain he can’t stay mad at you for long so you’re not terribly bothered.
You also make sure to tell this story to your friends just to see his reaction again.
