i think season 11 wash has a really interesting arc where like. he comes to understand that the reds and blues are like. people? because like. he definitely CARES about them by the end of season 10 but he’s also very… i am the Adult here who needs to wrangle these children sim troopers because i am their superior leader and they can’t be trusted. while he’s not actively cruel to them the way he was in season 6 he still had the same air of superiority. i am the Freelancer i Outrank You. like you especially see this in his growing friendship with tucker where he’s drilling him (nice) and yelling at him and very much treating him like he was his inferior (i am going to break you) because he’s SO indoctrinated into this military mindset of hierarchy and discipline that it’s only when tucker expresses genuine emotion (he’s gone now and all i have is you) that wash goes. oh. you aren’t just this one dimensional sim trooper are you. you’re a whole ass person with complex feelings and a rich inner world and you are. hurting. and he’s able to look at caboose and see the same. and he goes ohhhh i’m doing a bad job here aren’t i. and he goes back to his own colors instead of churchs and like there’s SOOO much symbolism in this action it’s insane but for this purposes it’s very much. shedding the role of leader that he was put into to be the “church” and instead is just. himself. wash never takes a lead role again after this he’s 100% supporting. like. freckles shake is him being a self sacrificial little bitch but it’s also very much him trusting that tucker will be able to save him. this is not an action wash would have taken at the beginning of the season.

I hc wash and south (and by proxy, north) as all being ODSTs prior to pfl and one thing I really like about hcing them as such is that it adds another layer of depth to why they were all chosen to be a part of the recovery force.
ODSTs are a special forces unit within the marines, and they're generally used as force amplifiers and in high risk or sensitive operations. two such scenarios include the recovery or recapture of personal and high level assets behind enemy lines, as well as deep reconnaissance and intelligence gathering. ODSTs are also used in politically sensitive operations, which pfl was following the crash of the moi.
so basically, who better to be on the recovery force than former ODSTs who already have a background doing the kind of work that would need to be done?
this also adds to some of the tension between north and south as well imo, as while they're a great team who are capable of working together they clearly have two very different skillsetssouth is not portrayed as someone who has the patience necessary for long reconnaissance missions, and part of the reason why team b failed so spectacularly is because two snipers and an intelligence operative are not a good choice for a smash and grab mission. had north been replaced with south things would've probably went way better for them, because south is actually fairly similar to wash in her "get in, get it done, get out" mentality, though where wash comes off as more methodical and is willing to take that "wait and see" approach, south throws caution to the wind and has a "we'll cross that bridge when we get there" approach.
this is probably why wash and south were (on paper at least) going to get eta and iota—south would've benefited greatly from having an ai that was afraid and anxious as it would force her to slow down and think things through more, and wash getting an ai that was happy and cheerful would force him to loosen up a bit and be less high-strung and serious.

listen okay all im saying is that alpha should have been allowed to open all of the airlocks on the mother of invention. I think he earned it. if he isn't allowed to blow up the whole goddamn world then at least let him jettison a few folks into the cold unforgiving vacuum of space ♡

I ALSO THINK. YOU MADE A WHOLE CUCKING CHARACTER WHOSE WHOLE THING IS THAT HE CANT GET OVER THE DEATH OF HIS BEST FRIEND HES SO HUNG UP ON THE PAST THAT IT DRIVES HIM CRAZY AND YOU FUCKIGN. YOU DONT INCLUDE HIM IN YOUR TIME TRAVEL STORY ONLY ONE SEASON LATER??? WHAT????? HELLO????? temple’s LITERALLY the perfect villain for a time travel story he’s the perfect jumping off point for the characters to think about the people they’ve lost and what they would or wouldn’t do to bring them back hes the perfect mirror to them trying to save wash without caring about the consequences aggghhhhh because temple wouldn’t care! if it destroys the world to bring biff back. he’d make a deal with the devil he’d ruin EVERY timeline to bring him back and your “heroes” are doing the same thing how are they any better than him! (because i’m the end they decide to let the past be the past and move on and deal with it while temple refuses at every chance)
i just don’t understand how this show that had so many of its themes be about the past and how people deal with it barely even touch upon this theme in its time travel season. especially when the season! directly before it! written and directed by the same guy! was literally all about how people deal with the past! where did this GO. how did you drop the ball that badly
