Gladiator (2000)

You don’t know how big a deal Gladiator was unless you were there. This Ridley Scott picture isn't doing anything THAT new, but the delivery fills you with excitement. The performances are excellent, the special effects hold up remarkably well. You latch onto the story, revel in the carnage and leave feeling pumped.

In AD 180, the elderly Roman Emperor Marcus Aurelius (Oliver Reed) arrives as his favourite General, Maximus Decimus Meridius (Russel Crowe) crushes the last of the Germanic tribes under the might of his army. Knowing his son Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix) is unfit to rule, Aurelius prepares to leave the throne to Maximus. When the Emperor is assassinated, Maximus is betrayed, left for dead and eventually sold to a gladiator trainer.

You can see the picture’s $100 million+ budget on the screen and it looks glorious. From the freezing battlefield of Northern Europe to the Colosseum in Rome, it’s a gorgeous, epic-looking film. You feel every bone-crushing blow, you eagerly lap up every drop of blood spilt. “Are you ENTERTAINED?!” Asks Maximus. Oh yes, yes we are. How could you not be, seeing our hero claw his way towards the top, using military strategy to defy the odds while the vile Commodus remains unpunished for murdering his father? Every victory in the arena is an act of defiance, a way to stick it to the villain. Seeing Commodus squirm never gets old. He’s powerful but pathetic. With none of the moral backbone needed to be a leader and always eager to cheat, the part could’ve easily been over-the-top and more than once, it dances on that edge but Joaquin Phoenix saves it. He’s like a spoiled little kid with his finger on the big red button. Everyone has always paid homage to him and he's confused that with love. You would’ve been invested in the story regardless of the characters but with these two on the opposing sides, the 155-minute running time feels like nothing.

Every battle has you on the edge of your seat and the dire odds Maximus faces fill you with a boiling mix of excitement and outrage. You can’t wait for Maximus to single-handedly hand Rome back to its people… except he doesn’t. I’m not spoiling the film’s ending, I’m telling you how he fits in this world. While Gladiator has many action scenes, I’d categorize it as a political drama/thriller first and foremost. Commodus is nuts and everyone knows it. The people closest to him have been fearing his rule and they’ve been preparing. All they needed was someone to push that first domino. Maximus happens to be that someone. All he wants is freedom but he’s a slave. A slave to the arena and to those who want to exploit him for their own devices. He might play along, particularly if his former lover Lucilla (Connie Nielsen) is the one doing the talking but ultimately, he’s a cog in a machine.

There’s plenty of inhuman carnage in Gladiator but the characters are made human. You come to know and like Maximus’ fellow gladiators, you sympathize for the many people trapped by the system that’s in place. Even Commodus - disgusting worm as he may be - is kind of pitiful. You want him violently eliminated... but not right right away.

I’m not sure if Gladiator would’ve gotten my vote for the “Best Picture” Oscar in 2000 but you can see why it won. This movie is a big deal. It’s memorable and exciting. You have a great time giving a “thumbs up” to the hero and a “thumbs down” to the villain. Ridley Scott’s direction and an excellent cast make the film intense even when it focuses on the characters slowly maneuvering around each other and figuring out the right time to strike. (Theatrical cut on Blu-ray, November 23, 2019)

A Little Extra

Evelyn Nicholson has been drawing since she could hold a crayon in her pudgy little toddler hand, and she never stopped. Those early drawing were typical scribbles, blue stick figures with purple hair, wonky houses, badly drawn versions of Ariel from The Little Mermaid. By the time she was in the first grade she could draw flowers better than anyone else in her class. Her mom had been so proud, and immediately signed her baby up for kids art classes. All was well in Evie’s life, until it wasn’t. One day when she was twelve, her father called her in from their backyard where she had been sketching the fall leaves. Coming inside she knew immediately that something was wrong, she could tell that her Mom had been crying, and her dad, well, he looked terrified. She sat down at the table with them, dread beginning to bubble inside her as she waited for them to speak. And then, in the blink of an eye, her whole world shattered into pieces with one sentence. “Honey, your Mom has cancer. It’s -it’s bad.”

Her parents tried to shelter her from the worst, but their daughter was adamant, she wanted to be there for her Mom and her Dad. She didn’t want to be put in the corner while the adults spoke in hushed words about her Moms condition. he night her Mom died is forever etched into Evie’s mind. Her whole family stood in the tiny hospital room, crowded around the bed, Evie’s dad on one side and Evie on the other surrounded by cousins and grandparents. They’d all said their separate goodbye’s, and now it was just waiting, as the seconds between each gasping breath lingered as they waited for her to slip away. The funeral was somber, as all funerals are. Especially for a twelve year old, even one wise beyond her years. She didn’t cry that day. Or the next. In fact she hasn’t cried since. But the pain was there. And shortly after the funeral, her dad piled her into the car, with all their worldly belongings and her mothers urn strapped carefully into the backseat and left their bad memories behind for the greener pastures of New Orleans. Life went on, Evie kept going with art helping her through (and a few pretty girls) and it all led to here. Her big chance in New York.

Logan Hunter - Evie met Logan Hunter at a house party. They were pretty memorable for the outfit alone but Evie had been much more interested in the who they were with because she? She was gorgeous. Like, drop dead gorgeous. #rip

The Ex Girlfriend - Evie had never liked liked boys, not the way her friends did. But, she reasoned with herself, maybe I just haven’t found the right boy? And she was right, except the right boy turned out to be the right girl. She still remembers the first time she saw her with Logan Hunter. Evie remembers the way her heart raced as she watched the other girl, quickly looking away whenever their eyes met. Eventually, the two girls became girlfriends. But when they both got into college, they decided to be responsible and break up, in order to focus on their studies. Evie misses her, but tries to tell herself it was for the best.

would connor and tom actually work as a couple?

Got this a while ago (sorry my inbox is. a mess.) but I HAVE been thinking about it kind of obsessively ever since so I'm gonna answer it now. Here's how I think it would go:

They move to Connor's New Mexico ranch and bake bread and (badly) ride horses and both think of themselves as much better ranchers than they actually are. The ranch is decked out in Napoleonica and Ancient Roman artifacts. They live in romantic bliss for a while, throwing big romantic gestures at each other. Tom slowly starts to go batty like Jack Nicholson in the Shining because he doesn't have any subordinates to punch-bag and he never gets to wear a suit anymore and despite what he says about sheep farming or whatever he's always been a pretty ambitious career-oriented guy. Connor tells Tom he wants to run for President and Tom KNOWS this is not a good idea but he's thisclose to putting an axe through the front door for fun and he needs a project so he tells Connor to go for it and makes himself Connor's campaign manager. Tom becomes obsessed with winning despite Connor's batshit policy platform (which they end up having several fights about because Tom wants him to change it to something moderately palatable to the public). He engages in several strategies of dubious ethics and legality to get some of Connor's key opponents to drop out until he actually has half a shot in the Republican primary. He's going up against Mencken. He fucks the debate so bad that Tom decides to run a smear campaign against Mencken only to discover that they've spent all their money. (Connor's funds only came from Waystar stock dividends and Tom hasn't been working). They are Flat Broke. Tom leaves in the middle of the night and moves back in with his parents in Minnesota. Connor drops out of the race.

Tom gets a job doing accounting for a local business that he fucking hates and gets a mediocre apartment that he also hates. One day Connor shows up at his mediocre apartment and tells Tom that he misses him and he still loves him etc and then he proposes right there and Tom is so blown away by the gesture that he accepts without considering whether this is actually a good idea. They will get married at Lake Como (Minnesota edition). Connor starts spending all of the money Tom is earning at his mediocre job because he has no idea how to live as middle-class and it puts strain on the relationship. GoJo buys Waystar (which kind of comes as a surprise because neither of them knows what the fuck is going on ever) and suddenly Connor has 3 billion dollars and they aren't "poor" anymore so they never address the strain on the relationship. They move back to New York and buy Logan's apartment from Marcia and Connor asks Kendall to give Tom a job so Tom has "something to do". Kendall and Roman make Tom COO because they need a new one now. Long hours late nights etc Tom ends up having affairs with both Ken and Roman (separately). Connor has no idea because he's too busy sitting at home trying (and failing) to learn how to carve marble so he can make a life-size statue of Napoleon. Tom feels so guilty about it he tries to throw himself in the Hudson but he jumps from a place way too low to cause any injury at all. He gets fished out and they call Connor because Connor is his emergency contact and Tom tells him he slipped but Connor knows better (although he doesn't know why). He decides to try and carve a life-size statue of him and Tom instead to unveil at the wedding.

They get married at Lake Como (Italy edition) and leave for their honeymoon on a small boat. The boat hits a rock and capsizes and they both drown. Their bodies wash up on the Italian coast clinging to each other. All three Roy siblings forget to go to their joint funeral
