Time for another sk8 sketch. It’s been a while, but here’s another drawing of @nataliepluto. This time we’re celebrating the launch of her custom deck. As always, she makes it look like a ton of fun, but getting those skills takes more time and practice than I have. Knowing me I’d end up in the hospital. Better for me to watch, appreciate the skill, and skate via the drawing board. . BTW, If you’re interested in the deck you can get her set up at flow.page/nataliepluto . . . #longboard #longboarding #longboarders #sk8er #sk8rgirl #longboarddancing #sidewalksurfing #santamonica #sk8 @skatebloodorange #calibertrucks @caliberskate #bloodorange @prismskateco #charcterdesign #characterart #characterillustration #caricature #skateillustration #skateboardillustration #skatelife #venicebeach #venicebeachskatepark #socal #oc #skatevibes https://www.instagram.com/p/Cgg-SfqO1iq/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Representation
These images show skaters of color as powerful, strong athletes. This representation is important because people of color have historically been underrepresented in these sports and activities. Media portraying people of color has been known to be filled with stereotypes. Real representation of marginalized groups helps to dismantle these hurtful stereotypes. Photographer Deborah Willis describes what it was like the first time she saw photos of people like her represented as everyday people and not posed as stereotypes:
“Sweetflypaper spoke of pride in the African American family…Sweetflypaper said to me that there was a place for black people’s stories. Their ordinary stories were alive and important and to be cherished…For me a veil was lifted.”
Willis’s description of the veil being lifted demonstrates how important representation is, especially in those formative years. Previously seeing people of color represented only for the amusement of white people depicted as stereotypes had limited her beliefs and value of herself and what was possible.

Intersectionality: We Belong Here
Black Girls Skate also embraces intersectionality. A skatepark has been considered a cis white male dominated space where women and girls were not welcomed. Women and girls would have to go to extremes to prove they “belonged” there too. By Black Girls Skate representing not only people of color, but women and girls of color in a white cis male dominated space, it is extra empowering to show the endless possibilities to women and girls of what they’re capable of. This representation is empowering. Seeing people who look like you achieving amazing things empowers you to do and try those things. It opens up new worlds and possibilities that were closed off and never even considered before.

I always loved those Korean longboarders who do those tricks. Those young girls look so graceful, when I was younger, I aspired to be like them, dancing on those boards, skating through Seoul.
