#love drawing random outfits for characters in their colour scheme

Could you explain why idolomantises’s designs fall flat like vivs designs? Just wondering because I love hearing anything character design related lmfao
Oh me too! I could talk about character designs all day!
I think while having very different styles, idolomantises and viviziepop’s designs both suffer from characters who don’t communicate what the character is or reflect the given world building (sometimes they’d just don’t fit at all?)
Vivziepop overcompensates this by having characters with ridiculous amounts of details that usually muddys whatever the concept is, not helped by her preference for thin body types and colour scheme of “red, red and MORE RED”
idolomantises meanwhile just, goes with the most obvious and generic direction without considering any visual symbolism that one can do with more finer details, or if there is detail it doesn’t actually add anything
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sera and the angels are a good starting point here in that Sera is the one with the most obvious Angel design with rings floating (I personally think the bird and cat look more Egyptian than anything else, though that’s not an actual design issue here)
Now I will say having Sera’s eyes being in her rings while her actual face is blank is clever but besides that? They’re all just wearing very thigh revealing dresses/robes with random golden bands , the ones on their thighs has got to be painful. Sera has the worst in that her skin and clothing are the same shade of white , so her skin just blends into her outfit
Which seems very conflicting with the fact that 1) Angels/Heaven’s views are so very anti sex that they place kissing and cuddling next to kink acts
Tumblr media
And 2) Sera is so awkward and inexperienced with sex as a concept that Lili , her wife, laughs at her for being awkward about kissing her (I also do not like Lili but I’m sticking with design criticisms for now)
Tumblr media
“Skin tight , flowy and thigh revealing robe with thigh bracelets” does not at all communicate that about Sera’s character or her environment. I don’t think you have to dress the angels as nuns to properly communicate their anti sex views, and a little fan service isn’t entirely wrong either . I think one could easily write out the conflicting thigh lore with an excuse that angels don’t see the naked body as sinful, and thus only a sinful pervert would think exposed thighs was sexual! But from what I’ve seen that isn’t the direction idolomantises is doing
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
But taking inspiration from both classical paintings and modern fashion, there was more that can be done with Sera and other angels besides “put a chalk white character who is very awkward with sex in a chalk white robe that high lights her thighs!”
Giving the angels revealing designs also makes the contrast between heaven and hell weaker as both angels and demons end up having similar design elements wow that sounds kinda familiar
Tumblr media
Ignoring my own personal feelings about her, Lili’s a decent design in that you look at her and immediately go “ah yes, sexy demon lady”, she is straight to the point
maybe too straight to the point
See, Lili’s design isn’t an issue until you compare her to how idolomantises draws environments in hell and how he designs other demons
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
You know , for someone who’s well know to be critical of Vivziepop, you’d think he realise how much he is also guilty of over using red
”well , demons are from hell what did you expect?”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Idk, maybe some better values?
Oh, notice how the pink demon actually sticks out more than the main character?
Tumblr media
I unironically prefer Mara over Lili and it’s weird she (or least her pink design/palette) wasn’t (used for) the main character considering her pinkness and Sera’s white and gold palette make the lesbian flag
Tumblr media
Which is literally the logo of the comic these characters are from

Hi! What do you think are the Kotlc characters dressing style? Like, what are their opinions in fashion and beauty? What is their favourite article of clothing? What colours do they look good in? What colours dot why like wearing, and why?
Hello!! I've actually been fumbling around with this recently because I had the idea to draw some of the kotlc characters but in my own clothes/style (the Linh drawing from the ten year keeper art challenge is an example!), so I've been trying to figure them out!
Sophie: Her goal is to be as comfortable as possible at all times. Big baggy things, neutral colors, etc. The brightest pop of color in her wardrobe is subdued yellow, which she mixes with the greys and beiges she loves. She's got this one hoodie from the human world she's almost always wearing when she doesn't have to go anywhere.
Fitz: Very crisp. He's clean with it, even when he's not dressed up. Simple things like fitted shirts and pants make him look way fancier than he's trying to be. I think he'd lean into blues and browns a lot because he likes how he looks in them. But he's got a soft spot for lounge-wear, and i think he'd have a dark grey set he wears around the house (but fun, pattered socks for some flare. he's got many pairs)
Keefe: He does like fashion! He likes looking good and knows he looks good. I think he'd absolutely indulge in fun colors and patterns, the whole variety of them. You could find the most random shit in his closet. Things he doesn't even know are in there. He loves jewelry and messing around with loose vs tight pieces, framing his best features. I feel like he's the kind of person to have a specific pair of pants he really likes and pairs with everything he has. As for comfort though, I think he'd have paint-stained sweatpants he loves to wear when he's painting.
Biana: I heavily associate her with purple and gold, and her style screams embroidery to me. Embellishments in gold, intricate details embroidered into the soft, flattering fabrics are just what she goes for. She doesn't over dress herself, but she definitely enjoys the bling and strategically matches her jewelry. I imagine her having a purple fitted tunic that laces up corset-style in the back, all covered in floral decals and framed in gold. She loves to dress herself up
Dex: This boy has never once thought about fashion in his life except to compare himself to other people. He's got hand-me-downs and mismatched things for days. He's got other people's clothes and neither of them know how it happened. He's 100% function over fashion because he's always working with gadgets or alchemy. I think his favorite outfit is just what he'd wear in his lab, however tattered, stained, or old it is, because it means he's about to get to work. (But green and gold are definitely his colors).
Linh: She isn't overly invested in fashion, but she likes looking nice and her simple clothing has a demure elegance. I associate her with sage green and flow, so summer dresses and rompers in that color scheme paired with simple silver jewelry feels fitting. I think one of those would be her favorite; pretty color, allows her to move around, simple to wear and doesn't require her to think about it at all.
Tam: He's baggy t-shirts in an angry way. All black and ripped, chains, patches, scribbles, frayed edges, the works. It doesn't always start destroyed, he just wears things so long they get beat up. He has a lot of cleaner, more put together things though because that's what people (like Tiergan) get him and he doesn't ask for anything. You wouldn't know, but he looks incredible in maroon. His favorite clothing item is a tattered graphic t-shirt two sizes too big Sophie got him from the Forbidden Cities.
Marella: She's bright, she's loud. Whites and bright blues and pinks, and oranges, she doesn't shy away from them. At least when she actually thinks about fashion at all. She's always wearing something wrinkled off the floor, the first thing she could find. As for favorite clothing item...hmm. I think she'd actually be the kind of person to have a favorite piece of jewelry over a clothing item, something sentimental. Otherwise favorite clothes would just be whatever was the most comfortable, which changes for her.
Stina: She likes fashion not in and of itself, but as a representation of her status. She likes to look classy and put together. Deeper colors achieve that, so that's what she wears a lot of the time. Navy, maroon, royal purple, etc. Like Fitz, clean and crisp, but for her she's got more gathering in her clothes. I feel like her favorite fancy item would be a cape/cloak of some kind that goes with the rest of her clothes and makes her look more noble. At least in public. At home she's got this super cozy tank-top shorts combo to lounge around it
Maruca: She feels like she's got some fashion thoughts and loves to partake, but does so more from time to time, not as often as Biana. She feels less embellished than Biana, but more so than Stina. A middle ground bridged by ruffles and sashes, things like that. I imagine she looks stunning in a dusty rose color. She feels pink and magenta, purple and blue. Favorite clothing item...perhaps a half-circle skirt? It's both structured and flowy, something like this but a different fabric, with some elven embellishments.
Wylie: Dark orange is what he looks best in. That's the color I associate with him, but he wouldn't wear it a lot. He goes for neutral like Sophie. I don't think he cares what he wears, he just puts on clothes. he doesn't like put on obviously clashing things like wearing garrish patterns, but it's whatever. it's clothes, who cares; he's got other things to worry about. But I think he'd have some sort of sweater as his favorite clothing item. Soft, comforting, warm, it's everything he's looking for. Maybe it's got a fun design on the front
Those are just some thoughts about their fashion and how I think they might approach it! Not everything is 100% elven so I could break the rules for the sake of self-expression, but hopefully that's alright :)

He's the spookiest of lads! He's Danny Phantom!
[ID: A digital illustration of Danny Phantom, his outfit is monochrome with highlights of green. He is wearing a NASA hoodie under a long coat with pockets on the sleeves, dark trousers with ribbed knees tucked into mismatched socks and black converse. The Fenton thermos floats in his hand. The background is a gradient of green and purple ghosts. End ID.]

heyy!! i really like your work and think you're SUPER MEGA cool, and hope you get REALLY good at animating!! drawing is the first step, so making it move is the next haha. (once i save enough for a tablet i'll practice a lot!!) but i have a question: how do you improve as an artist? do you actively seek out critique or does it come with time and sub-conscious decisions to not do the bad thing anymore? what did you do? love you, keep fredding on!! ----some stupid idiot who wants to be anonymous
Tumblr media
thank u anon this is super sweet!!! it means a lot<3
also ive been an animation student for 5 years now so i know a little bit but probably, less than i should.....i do Not practise enough
as for tips! let me try and compile a short list of things that help me!
• u hear it all the time but its true-practise practise practise!!! sketchbooks, digital, whatever strikes ur fancy. practising is the MOST important thing u can do
• understand and research the basics. you dont need to be an expert on anything, god knows im not, but its good to know a bit! this includes but isnt limited to:
colour theory! why colours go together, what colour schemes look good, etc. heres some basics on it! personally
[i also find symbolism of colour just as important. obviously symbolism varies from person to person and culture! but heres a quick guide on the usual symbolism of colour. if something sounds wrong to you though, mess with it yourself!]
tthe form of subjects-this means drawing basic shapes, and using them to construct [basically] anything! the idea is its much easier to draw and move around a series of cubes and cylinders, than a whole human body. heres a guide on how form works.
draw a box is a challenge recommended to me by my lecturer for improving on drawing shapes and forms! i highly recommend it!
value and lighting are important! heres an explanation on value. im not sure much can be done to cheat lighting and value, except for master studies (we’ll get to that shortly!) and observation.
the most useful tip on value ive learned, is to turn your art black and white, and see if it all has enough contrast without colour. if not, time to work on the values!
composition, babey. how subjects are arranged in a piece. heres a bunch of stuff on it [im still learning this one...rule of thirds i will Die for tho]
anatomy! this is the hardest shit. i still dont get it. my lecturers recommend andy loomis [heres a pdf of his figure drawing book] idt his way was quite up my alley, but u never know!
• speaking of anatomy-life drawing is an INCREDIBLY useful reference. so goddamn useful, u dont even know. they help u figure out anatomy! this includes gesture studies, and more detailed things. i recommend googling how a typical life drawing class goes down/tips for it
life drawing classes are very difficult to access atm, so here are a couple of online resources! [all of these will obv contain nude bodies]
croquis cafe-contains free videos that simulate a life drawing class! videos are more useful than images. has a variety of ethnicities and body types, which is wonderful!
line of action- a site with a variety of images on figure drawing, animal drawing, as well as hands & feet, expression/face focus, and environmental things. you can set it to play as a slideshow for as long as u like, or set it up to be similar in timing to a real life drawing class
online stock photo artists such as senshistock, who has compiled a useful little list of similar accounts over here!
•  reference reference reference!! references are so incredibly useful, and anyone who tells you using a reference is cheating is wrong on every conceivable level. reference from photos, from movies, from videos, everything.
something ive had to do in every level of art education is recreations and master studies.
this means collecting artists work from professionals-be it historic painters, movie screenshots, concept artists, anything!
it makes you focus on their compositions, how the lighting works, the colours used, pretty much everything.
this is useful bc it can 1: get you out of your comfort zone and 2: make you use new techniques you might never have considered
online tools such as designdoll and justsketchme have poseable models for you to pose as you please and reference from! suuuuper useful, especially for perspective poses.
• experimentation! fuck around. use brushes youve never used before, try a new medium, collect every free sample from the craft store and just Do Shit with it.
•  absorb every goddamn piece of art u have ever come across, and save what you enjoy.
and i mean save everything you enjoy. u like a movies lighting? a certain shot? an outfit? a random piece of fanart u came across? save it! look at it, figure out what it is u like
make a private pinterest board or a folder on ur computer, save everything.
absorb and yank bits from art u enjoy. obviously dont imitate someones entire style, but if u like the way someone draws hands, or noses, or eyes, reference it. recreate it. see what u like, and incorporate it into ur own art
art is a big mess of taking things u like and making it ur own
•  study professionals! animations, artists, illustrators. they know what they’re doing.
heres a useful resource with a lot of rare concept art from animated movies! i go here a lot.
buy art books, or acquire pdfs of them, im not a cop, i dont care
• as for critique, i do look for critique, and pay attention to it, but it’s important to know not to take it personally. and i recommend asking people whos opinions you value!
i think thats all i can think of right now in terms of General Art....
if u want me to elaborate on anything or show me art, ask for help or just talk art stuff [character design is my fav and my speciality, ive been studying it for a while 👀] please dont be afraid to dm me or just send me another ask!
best of luck anon, i rly hope this helps! :D

Magical Girl Raising Project: Restart character design ranking
Pechka
Tumblr media
Starting with a great magical girl chef design. The outfit is recognisable as a chef’s uniform but is still strange enough to be a magical girl outfit, and the silly red thingies on the hem resembling stovetops keep it from being just a chef’s coat with frills. And the red stove things also repeat in her boots. The multicoloured hair is a little odd choice here, but at least the colours look good together. Add an overall pleasant colour scheme and a cute hat and you’re done, though the tail feathers kind of bother me. The one in the hat is an okay decoration, but the showy tail doesn’t really have anything to do with the rest of the outfit theme. 8/10.
Clantail
Tumblr media
I really like Clantail but the design is kinda meh. There is something that fascinates me about deer-taurs and in general they are always charming and pretty to me so that is a big plus for Clantail, but since that’s not really a permanent part of her design when she can use any animal for her lower body I can’t give her too many points for that. And if you ignore the animal part of her design there’s not much to talk about. I mean, what is the theme here? She has sort of kimono-esque clothes, and a frilly apron, feathers (?), triangle tattoos on her neck, and floating flowers, one of which makes me think of a halo? And also horns (?), which I guess at least go with the deer theme, but overall I find Clantail kind of a mess and none of the individual design elements are particularly interesting details either. Nice hanging tassels and eye makeup, but sorry Clantail, this just doesn’t work for me. 2/10.
Rionetta
Tumblr media
What I find a missed opportunity here is how you can barely see that she’s a doll. Shouldn’t a short-sleeved dress be a better choice here to show her elbow joints, or even a sleeveless dress altogether? The dress itself is a pretty basic frilly lolita dress without much in the magical department so in order for the design to stand out you should play up the doll body. But at quick glance she looks just like an ordinary anime girl, and even her eyes don’t really sell it properly that her sclera are black (at least in Marui-no’s style). But at least the dress design is cute with all the ribbons and layers, the colours and patterns are nice, and blue and beige (?) wouldn’t be the first option to come to my mind when thinking of a lolita style doll so there’s something non-standard there. The one unique detail she has is the... thing behind her, which bothers me a lot since I can’t quite make out what it is, which makes drawing her difficult. It’s like she has a paper fan glued to her butt, which is probably an inaccurate interpretation but it’s the best I can manage. 6/10.
Miyokata Nonako
Tumblr media
I like the webbing and ribbons on the sleeves, but other than that this is quite a basic miko outfit (as in anime miko). Still looks alright tho since miko outfits are already aesthetically pleasing so it’s a good basis for a design, and the sleeves are nice enough that the look is not completely boring. But there’s not much I can say about this one 6/10.
Magical Daisy
Tumblr media
I really like Daisy’s look; it doesn’t have a specific theme (like detective, chef, etc) and instead is just a basic magical girl outfit, as in a frilly dress with lots of layers and ribbons. But even though it is a basic magical girl look it still isn’t a boring and unimaginative one, since the cut of the dress is unique enough. Also the pale green and brown colour palette is a nice change from the usual pink you’d expect from a character who in-universe is the star of her own magical girl tv anime, and I like the logo on her (admittedly strange) headpiece and... bag? Apron?. Plus some bonus points for unique eyes. What I don’t like however are the dumb floating flowers behind her. 9/10.
Nokko-chan
Tumblr media
When you really think about it, this is a basic maid dress and there’s nothing that stands out about her from neck down, and the headpiece only really has the cat ears that differentiate it from a generic maid hat. But still I find Nokko-chan super appealing to look at. Must be the hairstyle then; the way her braids are stuffed into those poofy cloth “bags” is just so cute and gives her a soft and friendly look. Add a good amount of ribbons and the aforementioned cat ears to add to the cuteness, and finish with a simple but appealing colour scheme. 8/10.

At first I thought this was a pretty basic anime China dress girl, but upon closer inspection I find that I actually quite like this design. The way the dress is cut obviously lends itself to fanservice that I don’t really care for, but without it there would be nothing of notice about this. And the overalls-like cut gives her a nice sporty vibe. The puffy arm things and the long ribbons add the much-needed details for this to have anything to do with a magical girl look. I do question the need for the tail though. 6/10.

Not into this kind of superhero suit things, sorry. The cat ear helmet and the tail give the suit some personality but I can’t think of anything to talk about this one, like there is enough detail for the design not to be completely boring but there’s nothing that stands out either. Next! 3/10.
Detec Bell
Tumblr media
I like detectives and the generic Sherlock Holmes look, so this design is right up my alley. I think the key here is all the fluff; without that the design would be more of just girl detective, but the fluff with the ribbons pushes it to magical girl territory. Even the bunny tail like thingy works since now it doesn’t feel so random and out of place visually since there’s similar fluff elsewhere. Having the cape double as an utility belt is a fun idea and the asymmetric haircut adds some extra flavour to an otherwise (comparatively) down to earth look. 10/10.
Lapis Lazuline

One of my least favourite MagiPro girls but at least she has a great design. The dark palette and fur give her a classy and mature look, and even the tail doesn’t look as out of place as with many other Marui-no designs since she hast the same fur on her cape, earrings and socks too. The design is also recognisable enough as a magical girl design (must be the mini-dress and poofy detached sleeves?) and not just any fantasy anime outfit. And there’s just the correct amount of detail so the result is in the ideal spot between boring and overdesigned, like there’s a lot going on with the dress, but the hair and legwear are nice and basic to balance it out. Can’t really think of anything to dislike about this one. 10/10.

I like the idea for the outfit more than the actual design. I’m a big fan of concept designs, redesigns, adapted costumes and such, so a look that’s in-universe based on some other design is already an interesting idea. And I guess the actual result isn’t too bad either, though I have trouble figuring out how the pants work and it greatly bothers me. And I don’t like the huge roses at the edge of her cape, they make it look heavy and not very flowy. But at least the roses and thorns look good otherwise and the cape has a more unique look around her shoulders so that’s good. 6/10.
Cherna Mouse

I love everything a bout the hamster headgear, the ‘no cats!’ signs tell so much about the character, the single strand of hair poking out adds a playful detail and most importantly the hanging paw thingies are just so cute. Especially in the picture where she uses them as hands! The x eyes and band-aid also give the impression of a childlike character who tumbles around a lot. However while it may fit the character’s personality I’m not a huge fan of the babylike elements since I’m not a baby person in general, but apart from that I can’t really think of anything I’d dislike about this one. 8/10.

Not sure about the theme of her outfit. I mean, I suppose we’re going for some kind of “sickly girl” look here, with the eye patch, wheelchair and nightgown-like dress, but that sounds like such a strange theme for me when the rest of the characters have more understandable themes like “cowboy” “nun” “doll” “maid”. And then there’s the fact that the bandages aren’t actually even a part of her look and are instead added later. But if this is what we’re going with, uh, I guess it’s not that bad. The hairstyle certainly adds to the upper class lady’s cozy homely bedtime look, and I like that the bird theme is consistent through the whole design. 6/10.
Shadow Gale
Tumblr media
Shadow Gale is alright and a dark ‘evil’ nurse image is a less generic take than just a regular one, like I’d expect a nurse to have a white colourscheme, or at least pink or pale blue or green. Though at first I thought that without a more recognisable colour scheme you wouldn’t know this was a nurse design in the first place if you removed the hat, but then again she does have the medical crosses and a name tag. And the name being scribbled out adds to the shady look created by the dark colour scheme. Not a huge fan of the tacked on tail, but at least it is somehow related to her name and there are also feathers on the collar, which look a lot better (and black feathers also work with the eerie feel of the rest of the outfit). The tight dress and a wide outerskirt thingy also look good together. 8/10.
Masked Wonder
Tumblr media
The tail is just unacceptable and pointless, there’s nothing cat-like about the rest of her design or personality and there are plenty of other MagiPro characters with animal features so that could have been left out here. But apart from that I think this is an alright design even if it’s a little too basic; solid black and some cool details. I like the sparkles on her cape and the rose theme ties everything together so it’s not just a bunch of random elements in the same design. 8/10.
Akane

Not enough magical girl here, she could easily be just another anime samurai. I do like the giant flower headpiece thingy and there are enough details so that the design isn’t exactly boring, but nothing about this excites me as a magical girl design, nor does it do enough to differentiate itself from other anime samurai looks I’ve seen. It does convey the character’s personality and role in the story well though. 3/10.
Keek
Tumblr media
Okay this one isn’t even trying to be a magical girl. It’s just a generic anime nerd girl in a generic bikini and generic oversized lab coat. Like can’t you give the coat an interesting cut at least? Can’t the pockets be heart shaped, or maybe there could be frills on the hem or something? Or if you’re not into the frills-and-ribbons cutesy look, that’s okay, not everyone has to, but surely there are other ways to incorporate interesting details. Unique rims on her glasses perhaps? A bytecode tattoo? Some cool pattern on her socks? At least do something with the Rubik’s cubes, I mean we’re magical girls here and the best you can do is flat colours, can’t the thing at least glow?
I do like the poofy hair and the pale and muted and kind of sickly colour scheme which fits her shady and antagonistic character, and the hairclip is alright, but as a magical girl design there is nothing that interests me about this one. 1/10.
