van houten family mormon headcanons:
(i can do what i want, no one can stop me)
kirk is that asshole who talks overtime on fast sunday
no one in the ward came to milhouse's baptism </3
luann is a young women's leader, the kind none of the girls get along with
kirk went to SUU, disappointing his family who wanted him to go to one of the BYUs
milhouse wants his primary teacher to like him, so he invites non-members all the time. no one ever comes
bart actually came with milhouse once, but he was a dick about it the whole time
luann goes to the first church of springfield to spite kirk (post-divorce)
kirk doesn't stay for church activities
milhouse confesses stuff that doesn't matter to the bishop. like, he does not care that you didn't leave a tip for the ice cream guy or that you played video games for an extra thirty minutes than you should have
the van houtens are the worst ministers
as a young man, kirk had to re-do the prayers for sacrament all the time because he keeps messing up. they don't really ask him to do things like that anymore
luann overshares when giving her testimony
milhouse goes to boy's camp during the summer because his parents don't want him to get bullied at normal summer camp. he gets bullied either way
kirk wears garish ties with ugly patterns. y'know the horrific necktie from disco elysium? it's always that type of design
luann also teaches seminary during the school year. she doesn't like that she has to wake up early
kirk makes the "11 am church is the true church" jokes and they aren't funny anymore
milhouse had to go to the hospital because he got a CTR ring stuck to his finger and it was turning his whole hand green
kirk won't let milhouse drink soda because he's never actually looked through the word of wisdom
kirk doesn't pay his tithing

Round 1: MOE SYZSLAK VS LUANN VAN HOUTEN
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Moe Syzslak TidBit: Moe has killed a child on screen. Not in a Treehouse of Horror.
Luann Van Houten TidBit: Luann & Kirk are canonically cousins. She did come from Shelbyville.

btw, since they're her sisters, all of their actions and traits serve as a foil to marge. marge is repeatedly asserted to be pretty, to be servile. her main flaw is very openly that she gives too much and asks too little. there have unironically been many, many fan works done analyzing just how empty her life seems to be, aside from being married to homer and caring for three kids. she's a housewife, a homemaker, a woman who gave up on aspirations, and a "natural beauty."
the simpsons was counterculture when it was first created. marge, just as the rest of the early cast, was a subversion of the popular image of the "perfect sitcom family." but, in many ways, it fell into the trappings of just being "culture" (sans "counter"), even back then. though homer was depicted as a violent idiot and marge was depicted as a stifled woman who gave up living for herself in totality, these things were never truly criticized or changed. they always returned back to default state. marge can never liberate herself from being the perfect, beautiful, loyal housewife and mother who does everything thanklessly. not really.
Family Guy is far from comparable to the Simpsons, but your point did immediately remind me of the episode where Meg finally stands up for herself.
It's like this whole episode where everyone is trapped in the house because of a storm and Meg calls the whole family out in individual rants for the way they've treated her. It's quite satisfying since her words, realistic or not, penetrate each character, including Peter and the family descends into an angry chaos against each other where finally, Meg is not on the receiving end at all. But by the end of the episode, Meg decides that the family "needs" her to be the punching bag so they don't turn on each other, and she recants everything she said as the family swiftly agrees and returns to their bullying of her before the episode even ends.
I understand in later seasons, the writers finally took the fucking hint and just sort of made her this oddball, unhinged character now instead of the punching bag, but tbh it was too little too late and the show sucks ass (more) now so who even cares?
Going back to the Simpsons, I think a good and funny counter culture character within the show is Milhouse's mom, Luann Van Houten.
We have a whole (hilarious) episode where we finally see more of what her and Kirk's marriage is like and watch it break down until she calls for divorce from this pathetic, insecure man. For most of the episode, we spend our time with Kirk watching him lament his marriage and come to realize how useless he'd been. By the end, he sings to her in your stereotypical touching moment and asks if she'd like to try again.
To which she says, verbatim, "Ew, no."
And then she never gets back with him 😭 She stays with Gyro and that's just it lmao. (Looking up how to spell her name correctly, I've noticed that they just had them remarry in these newer, desperate, bullshit seasons that I do not consider canon so my statement stands.)

Homer, to Luann: Oh, look who’s in favor of compromise. The woman who married Kirk Van Houten.
Kirk: Hey! She didn’t compromise. She settled. There’s a difference.
