So. Last episode of season one, huh. So you know those kids shows that are totally great for kids but have an extra layer of meaning for adults?
Up to now, I've been "oh, this is so fun! The real heart wrenching stuff comes later I suppose, but that's chill."
I want to direct your focus to the fight scene with Luke.
Tumblr media
It's a fight scene between powerful demigods.
It's also a fight scene between kids. Kids who've grown to love and trust each other, like kids do.
Tumblr media
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
*horrified* "I'm sorry!!"
*almost smiling and shocked at that* "you did get better"
*every thought of fighting dropped for a moment without a second thought* "I didn't mean to..."
*asking, begging, breathing, and has NEVER ONCE stopped looking him in the eye" "last chance"
This almost broke me. This is when the euphoric music quieted to me and my tea almost slipped my hand.
It's so friends at summer camp. It's "I'm scared and my Mom just died but you're trying to be a rock for me and wow" it's "you're scared like I was scared back then and it scares me how much you're like me" it's "I'm born for greatness and I don't want it" it's "I'll give you agency and power to chose your fate by making you be able to defend yourself" it's sword lessons and life lessons and breaks from all these adults trying to tell you what to do and it's "Annabeth's my little sister"
Speaking of Annabeth
Tumblr media
He knows, right there, instantly, that he's lost her. And nothing has terrified him more.
I think this is why we can expect massive, beautiful character development in coming seasons. Because they managed to do that. They could've given us a typical good-vs-evil fight where the Villian gives a quick "join us" speech, the hero is ✨above that✨ and the Villian instantly goes over to trying to kill him. Escaping with a quick one liner.
No one won this fight. All three fought the kind of friend you make when you've been through shit together and you're too young to have power over it. No words for it, confused, and holding on to this bond with all your strength;
He was there for me.
Tumblr media
This is why Luke hates the gods.

The change in Luke’s betrayal from the scorpion was honestly perfect?? Like the scorpion involved planning and intent but I don’t believe that Luke *wanted* for Percy to die. He wanted for Percy to understand and join him. So the show makes so much more sense where Percy ACCIDENTALLY cuts Luke and immediately apologizes and THATS when Luke snaps like

PJO spoilers if you haven’t read the books.
Hey guys, so we know that Luke didn’t literally cut a slice through the protective veil in the books. It makes me wonder if maybe that’s going to have something to do with how the veil and Thalia’s tree are hurt in the show’s version of Sea of Monsters. If so, I feel like Luke specifically using backbiter as a way to cut through the veil and arguably Thalia at the same time that Annabeth catches him in the betrayal is just so much more devastating than the way it’s done in the books. Like, he really betrayed them both in one single act. With a sword named Backbiter.

I'm now re-reading TLT with some extra attention to how Luke is portrayed and this is actually SO complex.
Some people were saying there was absolutely no reason to think Luke could be the traitor because he was The Perfect Kid TM, but this is not true. Percy didn't even know him for a day when he realised his bitterness. It is very visible that Luke is disillusioned and angry and frustrated (and he has good reasons), he gives the impression of someone who has given up all hope, but trying to make the best of it.
On the other hand: He did the sacrifices to Hermes even though everyone must have known he hates him. He was there for everyone and I actually think that he tried to help everyone to survive because he KNEW WHAT WAS OUT THERE.
Was Luke the Golden Boy, Mr. Perfect, beyond any doubt or suspicion? No. It was easy to understand why he turned against the gods, even for people who didn't know him for a long time. But also, he still kept on doing like before, seemingly trying to live with it. And I think this is the reason why nobody thought Luke could be the traitor: Because he was doing all this even though he had no faith in the gods, because it seemed like he accepted this flawed world and tried to make the best of it, because it looked like he made his choice.
It was all show, all a lie. But there is a demigod who actually is all what Luke pretended to be. It is Percy.

Pjo fans saying as a theme of posts 'what a tragedy is that Percy couldn't save Luke😭' now is so fucking sick and highkey twisted.'Couldn't save him'?Since when is the job of kids to save adults from their own trauma instead of the other way around?I mean Percy did that just fine!He saved Nico,he saved Hazel,he saved all the CHB kids by sticking around to care for them even if he's not a year rounder and he's been saving people his whole life by being a bully beater who encourages victims to love themselves for being weird and nobody saved PERCY then. No,Sally dosen't count, because the bullying and Smelly Gabe's at home abuse still happened with her around and that's not her fault or a flaw on her part,it's the system's and Gabe's and DID do her best for him and he correctly thinks she IS the best for it so he grew up to be seen as the best his found siblings and pseudo-kids too and they're all also correct
And right, tell me what Luke did for Percy to even make him want to save him to begin with?Their entire dynamic was gaslighting and child grooming to leave Percy all alone with a crime he didn't commit to the gods,Luke loud and proud announced that in the TLT finale while being a grown ass 19 year old traumadumping to his 12 year old summer camp 'friend'.Even they really WERE friends,it still should've been Luke to save Percy, just like it's MY job as an adult to save my actual friends who're kids from what's been done to them by their abusers and i'm happy to because i genuinely love them as people and see them as my younger siblings as much as i do my bio ones, who i've also helped grow up with self-worth and defense mechanisms against shitty people.I'm an eldest,it's in me to and i'm more like Percy than Luke could ever be so stick to your lil oink oink child military creating in his 20s minor-coded sellout and leave Percy out of it so he can move on with his life since Luke was the one who ruined it to begin with and kept forcing it onto him, alright besties?I have links to actual anti-fascist tactics and history instead of just Karl Marx memes if you feel like reading them to put on a break on the 'dark smut' too💕

Suppressing my laughter whenever someone who hasn't read the books goes—
"UGH! LUKE IS SO NICE AND RELIABLE! HE'S SUCH A NICE GUY!"
... Oh yeah... Totally...

Yeah no if I were a demigod Luke could so much as breathe '"I've got a way to stand up against these gods that are so distant to us, calling them parents is a mere formality, I'm angry and traumatized since my best friend died and instead of protecting her, her dad made her useful and all we do all day is learn how to fight their battles and die for them. Wanna join"
And I'd be like "sign me up bitch."
I wouldn't see the lurking agenda of Kronos. I wouldn't see that I'm just aiding a different impressive power to control my life, probably in an even worse way. That would go completely over my head, all I'd be able to see is that I could fight back

I've been thinking about this for years now since I first read Percy Jackson and the lightning thief.
When Luke threw that can in the forest- he spent years in camp, he must've known it would alert something to their presence. Even if just to put in them the wrath of nature.
I wouldn't go so far as to say he was trying to save Percy.
But, he's also spent most of his life as the caretaker of a cabin full of kids, and Percy ticks a lot of boxes for 'the kinds of kids he'd learned to protect and save'.
I just think Luke sat there, thought about what he was going to do, realizes he's going to go through with it and wouldn't regret it, but it doesn't mean he's not sorry that he's going to have to kill this pretty okay kid who's only real sin is being born and that's really the root of all his hatred. Just another tally against the gods.
So. Decides to toss him a chance. It's not saving him, there's no guarantee someone will be fast enough to save his life, but hey, if Percy lives.... good for him.
Not to say Luke wouldn't try his damnest to kill Percy later on, but at that moment.
He's Luke. He's always been Luke. A fatal flaw doesn't erase everything else about you.

I wholeheartedly think that if Sally was actually killed by the Minotaur and Percy had stayed at camp for a bit instead of immediately being sent on the quest he would have absolutely sided with Luke because Luke wasn’t wrong in his ideals just in his methods but Percy is also insanely loyal and Luke was KIND to him

Ok, SO.
I just had a thought…
To the people who bathed in the river styx, (Percy, before the Tiber. Luke, before his death) do oaths on the river Styx still work on them?
Like since they have the blessing of the Styx, do their oaths still work, or do they just like repel off of them or something?
Also, I barely know anything about the Styx or real Greek mythology, so don’t come after me 😟

that scene in tlo where thalia tells percy he can't start feeling sorry for luke bc luke made his choices. and thalia reveals that the reason they couldn't make it to camp in time for all of them to make it to camp was bc luke kept picking fights. and annabeth never saw this as wrong bc luke was her hero. so thalia had to pick up the pieces. and percy thinking both that luke was put in a cruel position and that luke was putting others in a cruel position. and percy is the only character who understood both sides of luke bc annabeth sees only the best of him and thalia sees only the worst. and that's why percy is the prophecy kid and the one who gives luke the knife. bc annabeth had spent the entire series essentially giving luke the knife when he didn't deserve it. and thalia was never going to give luke the knife. but percy is the only one who can see exactly when luke deserves the knife.
