Every footstep is a twist of a knife in Rebekah's heart. She presses her lips together to hold back the sting in her eyes, blinking them away as she tries her best to focus on the blurring words on the page. Part of her thinks the main girl has the right idea; turning to a life of alcoholism and cynical loneliness rather than risk another broken heart. The pain isn't worth it.

A door closes and her heart shatters. She covers her eyes and gives up her pretence of caring about the book. Her skin is starting to wrinkle from being in the bath so long, but she couldn't bring herself to leave before him. She thought that a bath might soothe her emotional pain. No luck.

She's so wrapped up in feeling sorry for herself that she doesn't realize she's not alone until the bathroom door opens. If she had been even a little bit more attentive, she would have realized the footsteps hadn't left at all.

"I'm just gonna run out and grab us something for breakfast," Matt begins. "How do you feel about--"

He cuts himself short when he catches a glimpse of Rebekah's teary expression. She quickly tries to hide her face behind a hand, but she's mostly unsuccessful for fear of dropping her book in the water.

"Hey." He kneels beside the tub and tenderly takes her wrist, pulling her hand gently from her face even as she shakes her head in defiance, flushing with embarrassment. "Hey, what's going on?"

"Nothing," she forces out, but her voice betrays her with an audible crack that makes the opposite quite clear. "I'm being ridiculous, it's fine. Just... go. It's fine."

"No," Matt says firmly. "I'm not leaving while you're like this. Something's upsetting you. What is it?"

When he gets no response, he sighs. His thumb is rubbing a soothing circle into the bone of her wrist. It's making it rather hard for even her to remember why she's so upset. Matt's here. Comforting her. What possible reason could she have to doubt him?

Maybe because this isn't right. It shouldn't be.

Matt presses his mouth to her hand and finally, she looks at him. A giant mistake, she quickly realizes; how could anyone ever resist his big blue eyes? She feels that she could drown faster in them than she could in this bath.

"You know that you can talk to me," he murmurs into her skin, winding the promise of safety into her veins and up to her heart, forming a layer of protection. Maybe she's simply been reading too many romance novels lately.

"I just..." she sniffles, shaking her head and looking up at the ceiling out of growing sheepishness. "I thought you were leaving me."

Matt sits up a little straighter, and she readies herself for the blow. For him to pull away and reveal that he is, in fact, leaving her, and was merely trying to do it gently.

"Are you crazy?"

She looks at him sharply and his features soften apologetically.

"Not what I meant," he says softly, and she relaxes her own expression, knowing he's sincere. "I just meant that... how could you possibly think that? We've been together all summer. Why would I just suddenly up and leave now?"

"I just thought... maybe that's all it was. Another summer fling. We did it before, and we called it off once summer ended." She pauses and shrugs. "Well, mostly."

Matt chuckles. It trails off into another sigh, a lopsided smile lingering on his face as he merely gazes at her. The look is almost familiar, but the fluttering in her stomach is unlike anything she's felt before. Except when she's fallen too deep for anyone to save her without it inevitably ending in heartbreak.

"I'm gonna say something, but I don't want it going to your head. Okay?" He waits until she nods, pressing her lips together to contain any reaction that may try to escape her. "I love you. And I don't say or... even feel that sorta emotion a whole lot. But when I do, I'm not just gonna walk away from it. I wasn't sure last summer. We had fun, and I thought that's all it was, because anything more seemed crazy. You're you and I'm... well, me. But, as it turns out, us being together is not the weirdest thing to happen, so I've decided to just let whatever is gonna happen.... happen, and not stress too much about it."

Rebekah is kind of wishing he was a vampire and had the ability to compel her quiet. It's taking far too much restraint to stop herself from reacting.

"If it wasn't obvious," Matt continues, his smile twitching a little wider at the corners of his mouth, stretching his pretty little scar on his upper lip, "what I was trying to say is that I'm not goin' anywhere. Not without you. Not unless you want me to."

She has to clamp her teeth together to contain her shout of relief and that, no, of course she doesn't want him to leave. It would be going too far to propose forever to a human coming from an eternal vampire, but the thought certainly crosses her mind. It leaves her with a hollow ache for a life she may never get to have.

Her heart still manages to skip to life as Matt leans in. Her eyes flutter closed for a moment, inhaling sharply as his lips press against her forehead and his thumb caresses a line across her cheekbone.

How could she possibly deserve to be touched so lovingly? With so much love and care and delicateness, to be treated like she's worthy of not being broken?

Pulling back, Matt smiles properly at her. "So, breakfast. I'm thinkin' waffles, strawberries, whipped cream and maybe some bacon. What do you think?"

She swallows thickly, once again finding herself using her eyelids to bat away tears like it's a sport and she's the Olympic champion of it.

"It sounds lovely," she says softly, nodding.

Matt's smile widens impossibly further. She just wants to trace that little scar with her thumb, but he presses another kiss to her hand.

"Great. I'm gonna head out, pick up a few things. I'll be back in about a half hour, okay?" He stands up, finally letting go of her hand.

She leaves it dangling over the side of the bath longingly. He's only a few steps away from her and still, she aches to be by his side. In his arms, against his skin.

Just as he opens the door to leave, her chest explodes with the force of keeping all of her thoughts and feelings buried in it, and she blurts out, "I love you, too!"

Matt looks back at her like he already knew. Still, there's a gentle flush against his neck beneath the collar of his shirt that brings her a touch of pride.

"See you soon," he says, and closes the door behind him.

Rebekah stays staring at the door until she has the chipped wood ingrained in the underside of her eyelids. She can't stop smiling.

least favorite storyline: d*lena sirebond nonsense probs, caroline/andie being reduced to a blood bag, st*ferine in s5.

what I wish had happened but didn’t: abby actually working hard for her and bonnie to have a relationship, caroline hating on DE in s4 for the RIGHT REASONS and reminding elena of the fact that she did not "jump into bed" on the first date but was assaulted, elena being free of the [redacted] brothers and regaining agency in s4, sheila having more of a presence on the show (and replacing the s*lvabros/al*ric as PRIMARILY BONNIE'S CARETAKER because she would prioritize her granddaughter first, but also protecting the rest of the scooby doo gang as well she'd also teach bonnie to value her self worth and not allow them to step all over her), BONNIE BEING ALLOWED TO MOURN the same way her white friends were allowed to, a motivation for bonnie outside magic, more love interests for bonnie, bonnie/qetsiyah interaction, caroline having motivations/storylines outside of male love interests, at least half the characters on this show being queer, luke parker being allowed to actually date men, nora realizing her exgirlfriend took the side of valerie's abuser over valeria and that she can do better/dating bonnie, katherine and nadia exploring their mother-daughter relationship, the mikaelsons and bonnie securing some kind of alliance

what happened that I wish hadn’t: d*roline (do i need to explain), tyler!klaus (it could have been an opportunity for michael trevino to show off his acting skills the same way nina dobrev did by playing multiple characters in one body, but instead the writers just had to go there), the second KC biting scene (which was completely unnecessary/recyled idea and totally could have been handled differently), katherine pursuing stefan instead of prioritizing her daughter

least favorite storyline: elijah's character regression in s5

what i wish had happened but didn't: klayley basically "adopting" davina in some sense; and i wanted cami to be dark!cami for a little while longer so klamille could parallel steroline. also klayley exchanging platonic gestures (klaus's hand on hayley's shoulder, her hand on his arm when she told him kindness=/= weakness) should definitely have been utilized more.

Hi! I've been rewatching TVD (I must be a masochist!) and wanted to challenge you to rank these ships in order from favorite to least favorite! I'm guessing you put Bamon and Stelena first, but I may very well be wrong :) Bamon, Stelena, Delena, Klaroline, Steroline, Forwood, Matt/Caroline, Bonenzo, Beremy, Matt/Rebekah. Have fun :)

You're pretty much right haha. I'm basing the ranking on how much I enjoy the dynamics between the two characters rather than how much I like them as a romantic pairing, because that's what works best for me.

Happy New Year, amazing friend! I'm thinking my resolution should be to stop stalking your blog so often :) I'm dying to hear about why you prefer Stefan/Rebekah to Matt/Rebekah whenever you have the time and inclination!

Happy (Almost) New Year, sweetie! I don’t know about you, but I am not sorry to see 2022 go. It was a lovely year in many regards but also taxing in many others. 😅 Wishing you a wonderful start to 2023! 💖

As for why I prefer Stebekah to Mabekah, I think it’s because they both have bleeding hearts to some degree and because they have a rich, bloody, and entangled history. (Fantastic chemistry, too!) They both yearn for a lot of human things, love and companionship above all, and I thought there was a lot of room for them to grow together. To live. They could reflect on the mangled chapters of their past and yet still end up somewhere, if not exactly new, then healed. I think it would have been rewarding to see them forge a path of their own together, you know? After all the heartbreak and betrayals and disappointments they’d had as both humans and vampires.

With Mabekah, while they were undeniably cute, I feel like they’d never work long term because Rebekah would have to be the one making all the sacrifices/compromises. Matt is sort of a brick wall in his romantic relationships. It’s his way or the highway. More than that, he totally resents the fact that Rebekah’s a vampire. He hates the supernatural. So, unless she were able to find and take the cure then they would never be anything other than a passing fling. He would never commit to her otherwise, and I hate the thought of his love being conditional. Rebekah deserves better than that.

Why do you think when it comes to ships in TVD kissing in the woods is a sign of death to a relationship? Like Stelena, Forwood, Klaroline, and Mabekah kissing in the woods.

I don't think kisses in the woods are a kiss of death. The only kiss of death I see in TVD is 3x19. It's a kiss of death because Elena chose Damon in that moment. Not Stefan, Damon. All of her devotion to Stefan is gone. By this, I mean there's a huge difference between a devoted friend and a devoted girlfriend. Elena can claim whatever she wants, but that moment is everything.
