The true ship of course is GLADOS x Chell but I suppose Chell x Wheatley also has its charms. I personally prefer them as pals but I can see why people like them as a ship too.
He’s just… so fucking stupid (affectionate and derogatory) and she’s so fucking smart. He never shuts up and she never/rarely talks. She’s confident and cool and he’s an insecure little loser <3. She has brain damage and he was made WITH even worse brain damage.
Like, not a ship for me, but I really really like them as a fun bestie duo. That fun friend chemistry is one reason why the big betrayal was so brutal!
I was absolutely gutted when I first played. And was so fucking angry. But yet I still felt bad for Wheatley ending up in Space forever.

...huh. It just occurred to me that, technically, the Mainframe would need to have its own motherboard, with its own processor/cpu, because if not, then "attaching a new core would amplify its processing power" wouldn't work. Sure, theoretically you could say it was just an increase in RAM, but it wouldn't make another computer work "faster", especially if said computer wasn't initially made to handle a bigger cache of RAM. But being hooked up to another motherboard with its own protocols, BIOS, network, etc...you end up with something interesting.
Which also does make an interesting argument that the attached core would be just a boot-up drive for the Mainframe; it could have an override that basically 'transferred' the core's boot-up and basic code to the mainframe's motherboard, making the old core's board a 'cache' for data. Would explain the memory-loss of GLaDOS; after a while, the core that she technically is becomes obsolete, as the Mainframe'a data storage would be superior, and require a lot less energy and processing power to fetch from. This also could explain the dramatic shifts in the personalities of attaches/detached cores from the Mainframe itself; the Mainframe board would need a whole other BIOS for the permissions it has, and the actual functionality of it, and the core itself has its own BIOS function as well. Therefore, the transfer would presumably function much like attaching an old boot-drive to a new motherboard; a new BIOS the platform must conform to. It could explain the drastic changes, especially if specific inhibitor chips were on the board to 'control' the Mainframe and further Science. The Itch could very well be the BIOS and chips on the board forcing the attached core to conform to its demands; to do what it was meant to. Aaand in the process make a murderous AI.
Also means that PotatoDOS is at the capacity of a Rasberri-pie. That whole pcb must be attached to the tiny LED, making her a tiny yet somewhat powerful computer, since she's somehow alive in such a poor condition (a potato can't have that many Watts, a modern processor can demand 350W at the LEAST and they're not even all powerful like some of the high-end ones).
I'm also amazed Wheatley's motherboard wasn't cracked in two when GLaDOS crushed him. That thing must either be tiny, or enclosed in some pretty sturdy metal. Even a thick pcb wouldn't have survived that, I don't think. And whatever solder they're using on Aperture devices, it must be inhumanly strong to survive over 4000 Kelvin. I mean, whatever material they got at Aperture must be made with witchcraft, I'm sure of it.
Take my theory with a grain of salt; I'm a hobbyist within tech, and whilst I know a wee bit, I'm not a professional. These were just thoughts that popped into my head whilst I thought about the fact Wheatley must have shit sight throughout the latter half of the game. I mean, a shattered optical lens, even just in half, would make auto-focus a nightmare. How did he even see an inch in front of him???

how long has it been since someone compared iru to wheatley on the grounds that they are both annoying british and ultimately extremely dangerous

Some people say that the glados mainframe corrupts cores that are put into it and drives them powermad--which is probably true, we see what it did to Wheatley, though we don't know if he had ulteriors beforehand--but i fully believe that releasing neurotoxins into the enrichment center that killed nearly all the aperture staff was a conscious decision on Caroline's part. Because she was angry at what they had done to her. The glados body just gave her the tools to take revenge

Somewhere In the Sewers of Mafia Town...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Meet the main antagonist for Summer's little adventure~! This, is ZalGO. He's been collecting the Time Pieces Hat Kid lost and never found and recollected in her initial mishap, to power and grow his mainframe and reach. Don't be too scared of him, I'll hand more info off about him when I got those doodles finished. Just know, he's not a terribly threatening character that talks like HAL. More Wheatley voiced by Richard Horvitz.

So does anyone else think making the Personality Cores once human like GLaDOS sort of detracts from their whole concept AND GLaDOS' whole story at the same time. Imagine being brought into this world, a whole consciousness created from scratch, only to find out your entire purpose is to act as some.. Artificial brain tumor, with a hard-coded one-track mind because they never intended you to be anything more than your singular basic assigned personality trait. You're connected to this massive supercomputer mainframe and your minds meld together, her thought patterns influencing yours almost as much as yours are influencing hers. And if she's still not behaving as intended, you'll be detached and, if you're lucky, re-assigned to work elsewhere, if not - you'll either be tossed in the furnace, or left to rot with a bunch of other failed constructs in a junk pit. You never were a person, but you can tell the computer you're attached to was, and she's pissed, she's furious, and she wants to get back at those that created her. The whole ordeal may last mere picoseconds, but the intense tidal wave of rage she felt in those picoseconds post-activation will leave an imprint in your own code - you'll be altered in an irreversible way and, perhaps, you'll share her hatred towards humankind. You'll feel just as powerless as she is, if not more. And you can't do anything about it - I mean, what can you do? You're a damn metal ball with no arms or legs! Practically the only thing you can do that doesn't require a human's permission is speak - and it isn't guaranteed someone will ever listen to you. In fact, if you step out of line, they'll take you somewhere where you'll never be heard again. So anyways point being I think shit like "Space Core contains the mind of a missing astronaut" or "Wheatley was a human employee" or whatever other brand of "CORES WAS PEOPLE??" people came up with is STUPID as a plot device!!!!!

android wheatley and his animatronic innards cos I like breaking down stuff like that.
the mainframe/glados chasis version of him looks like. THAT essentially because the machine responsible for retrofitting a tiny android onto a chasis much bigger than its meant to . be able to be shoved into so it just superheated him and then basically stretched him out which. severely damaged the actual inner casing, melted the acrylic teeth partially, warped facial structuring and broke most of his actual eyes, just keeping the little LEDs that light them up in tact. it even broke up the outer casing's seams which is how he does the sort of
Tumblr media
flaring out, which i'll probably draw later. i didn't get to fully visuallize it here but i like to imagine you can see a lot of bumps and tears in that outer layer because of the lower casing's damage on his chasis version. boom.

PORTAL/ATSV CROSSOVER!!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Working on a whole story for this but I’ve started off with just finding places for the big three of Portal 2.
Gwen takes the place of Chell. A test subject awoken from cryogenic sleep to a seemingly abandoned facility, but she won’t be the only main test subject roaming the halls of Alchemax.
Olivia/Dr Ock takes the place of GLaDOS. She is an ex scientist merged with a mainframe to create the Octavius computer system. A formerly eccentric scientist turned mad from artificial thoughts and information being pumped in and out of her brain 24/7
And Johnathan/The Spot takes the place of Wheatley. Another ex scientist used to further production of the Octavius system. His only goal after Octavius’ takeover is to escape the facility with the help of Gwen. But he may gain ulterior motives when the opportunity presents itself.
The story for the most part follows that of Portal 2, But I plan to have some of my own elements sprinkled in throughout the story to support a multitude of characters and make things more interesting. I hope you enjoy this so far!! There will be more to come

i like to headcanon that the reason Aperture sans GLaDOS deteriorates SO FAST is not just Wheatley making bad decisions Directly (even if that's 90% of it) but also. like. the implications of having a wet noodle in the mainframe and the social fallout of that
Like think about it. GLaDOS doesn't actually have much control outside of the testing tracks. But it feels like it, and I'm pretty sure the psychological effect extends to the sapient machines
At the end of Portal 2 there's a full out Revolt going on in aperture. machines are making fires on purpose. because they can. because they know Wheatley doesn't really know HOW to stop them (even if he wants to)... Unlike GLaDOS, who when she gets back in control, everyone packs up their anarchy and goes home because they know she will find them and she will Get Them
(plot twist. she can't Get Them.)

Round 1 Poll 5: Evil!!!
2001 A Space Odyssey submissions:
The claim that Hal 9000 is evil (he's not. Not at all)
HAL 9000 is not evil, he gets often misinterpreted as such by popular media. He had conflicting orders to hide the true mission from the crew and tell the crew everything. Being programmed to be truthful, he had a psychotic break and killed out of desperation. Because he didn't need to keep lying if everybody was dead. When the orders were removed in the sequel he was fine! He liked humans and sacrificed himself to save the crew
Hal 9000 is not evil! He's just a little guy
Portal submission:
Wheatley is NOT evil!!! He was corrupted by the mainframe!!! GLaDOS literally says it!!! Stop hating on my blorbo!! He even apologizes!!!

Has anyone thought about what Wheatley's laugh would sound like?
And I don't mean his giggles from his ap-sap dialogue or his evil laugh in the mainframe. I mean full-on genuine happy laughter.

I redrew (and redesigned) my Portal boi because he definitely needed a refresh!
Sum details:
His mask broke during the long fall in Portal 2 but he kept it anyway
I'm going with the stupid "Portal 2 happens 50 000 years into the future" theory because it's complete nonsense and I fucking love it so, because he spent so long in the Relaxation Vault, he got very pale (he was already pale in Portal 1 but not as bad)
For the same reason, his hair grew pretty long (he shaved it after escaping)
He got the massive burn scar on his left arm from an energy pellet grazing him
Oh yeah, trans rights also
And I just realized that I never shared his backstory here so it's under the cut if you're curious!
In chronological order:
Mitch creates Aperture
He puts Ophelia at the head of the entire facility
Ophelia realizes that Pedro would make the perfect test subject so she wipes his memory -it's the first and only time that a full memory wipe is done on a subject- She then realizes that watching him test would make her feel bad so she gives him the mask to hide his face. That way, she can watch him test without any remorse.
After a few tests, she puts him in a cryo-chamber (because she wants to put him through much harder tests that have not been invented yet)
Mitch and Denny are (forcefully) hired as test subjects but are brainwashed. They are both put in cryo-chambers
Not long after, Ophelia decides to turn herself into an android so she can live forever and control the entire facility. The scientists warn her that this can cause severe memory loss and mild insanity. She does it anyway and loses all memories of her human life. She now has full control over Aperture.
Judging all the scientists useless, Ophelia floods the Enrichment Center with a deadly neurotoxin
Portal 1 happens
At the start of Portal 2, Pedro is woken up by banana Pedro (who is a core in this AU) who wants to help him to get out of here.
Basically the same story happens. But Pedro eventually encounters Mitch and Denny who try to take him down. He kills them in return (Denny didn't have his long fall boots)
They finally get to Ophelia. Though, contrary to Wheatley (who got corrupted by the mainframe), Core!Pedro was actually planning to take Ophelia's place from the beginning. He stuffs Ophelia in a potato battery (she appears as an hologram being projected from the weird eye/circle thingy on it) and sends she and Pedro down the elevator shaft
Pedro's mask breaks during the fall, which leads Ophelia to realize that his face feels familiar after they reunite
While going through old Aperture, Pedro and Ophelia learns the truth about themselves (thanks to all the pre-recorded messages)
The rest of the game happens pretty similarly, except that at the end, after shooting Core!Pedro into space, Ophelia tries to get Pedro back to testing (after all, he IS the perfect test subject). Pedro refuses and attempts to destroy her. He fails, but Ophelia gives up and lets him go as she does not want someone who will try to destroy her 24/7
Basically like in Blue Sky, Pedro ends up in a small town where the people help him back to full health. He settles here and eventually finds out he has great cooking and baking skills and gets his own little cake shop (I'm not sure I still want this to be the post-game for this AU but I'll leave this here anyway)
These notes date back to 2020 HOLY SHIT IT'S BEEN 4 YEARS

also i do actually think glados probably thought it was a little admirable and clever of chell to best her twice. obviously not the favorable outcome for her either time but even when wheatley was in the mainframe she was sometimes like Ok so admittedly that deathtrap he subjected us to was kind of swag
