I feel like I probably have the world record for “Person who thinks about the Hollands the most”
Anyway, next season I hope the Upside Down becomes known to the town, Gravity Falls style. I’ve mentioned this before a long time ago, but rn I want to add that I want the Hollands to find out about how Barb relates to it

Headcanons about Nancy and Robin talking about Barb?
I actually have a very very specific scenario in mind set in my comphet robin/monster hunter AU, in which Nancy is responsible to look out for Robin, who's under Vecna's curse - but that doesn't mean she needs to be with her 24/7 (which is a relief to both of them, because they don't really like each other at this point). BUT, for some reason, one night Robin decides to make it her goal to annoy Nancy as much as possible, or at least that's how Nancy feels like, because she keeps following her and tagging along everywhere she goes, just talking her ear off even though Nancy has plans that night, plans that don't involve Robin, and would much prefer it if Robin just went home.
Anyway, as Nancy walks and Robin follows her, they find themselves at the door of a hourse Robin doesn't recognize, and Nancy tells her to leave one more time before knocking.
But then the door opens, and it's Mrs. Holland there. Nancy was to have dinner with them that night. She's been having dinner with them every saturday night for the past two years, ever since Barb's body was found.
And Nancy expects Robin to finally leave her alone, now that she's joining the Hollands - but then Mrs. Holland inhales and says:
"Robin? Dear, is that you?"
Nancy freezes, mind racing, wondering from where could Mrs. Holland possibly know Robin from.
"Um. Hi, Marsha," Robin mumbles.
"Oh, Robin! It's been so long. Please, come in! It's always nice to see Barb's friends."
So Robin ends up awkwardly joining them, much to Nancy's confusion. She and Barb hadn't really talked ever since they were... twelve? But here she was - not in the house in which she'd spent a great deal of her childhood, drawing and listening to music and infodumping with Barb for hours on end - no, this was a new, smaller house, but with far more pictures of Barb than the old one. Barb's parents are so happy to see her, or the closest thing to happy one can be when you lose a daughter. They reminisce about Barb's childhood with her - how they used to make fun of boys and how they were both so smart and loved to read together, how they held hands everywhere they went and how they played all sorts of games in the playground and the old house's backyard. It's uncomfortable for Robin at first, but then she begins to feel really sad, becuse she remembers thinking Barb had just ran away, but she was dead. Dead, dead, dead. Gone forever. She would never see her childhood best friend again. She tears up a little. She tells them that, even though she hasn't spoken to Barb in years, she treasures every memory she had with her, and even knowing how everything ended, could she travel to the pas she would be her friend again, because every second of their friendship was worth it.
Here's a small scene I have in my WIPS:
“Yeah, I mean, Barb and I were weird as hell.” Nancy put her glass down  “What Robin means to say is that… she and Barb had a really unique friendship.” “No, that's not what I mean.” Robin shook her head. “Barb and I were freaks. We were weird. Like… Nance, why are you kicking me? Stop that. Anyway, I once found a weird slug in the grass and Barb helped me figure out what the heck it was, and we kept it in a jar for like a week. We took it to school every day in secret and we showed it to everyone because we thought having a slug pet named Neil Armstrong would make us really cool. And when dumbass kids made fun of us - Barb wouldn't even care. Like, I kept hiding Neil Armstrong in my hoodie because I didn't want to be known as the Slug Girl but Barb… she just shrugged. Like I distinctly remember her shugging when they called her Slug Girl. It was a full body shrug, like the intensity with which she did not care had overcome her entire being. She was way beyond all of us. No one even held a candle to her. She was authentic. Not fake authentic, like, being pretentious just for the sake of being pretentious and stuff. She was herself, utterly and wholly and I - I don't think I ever met anyone else like that.”
Nancy is... tense when they leave. Robin says goodbye to Barb's parents with a big long hug, and then Nancy walks back to where she left her car, before Robin intercepted her. They climb inside.
"They sold their house," she said. "To pay for a... private investigator who could tell them who killed Barb." Robin felt something in her gut drop, like a piece of wet cement falling from the walls of her stomach. "I didn't know that." Nancy adjusted her grip on the steering wheel. "They hired someone who would ruin their life, with the amount they charged. All to tell them what I already know." Who killed Barb, by breaking her arms, her legs, her jaw, sucking in her eyes. Robin remembered the ticking clock and shuddered. "I'm assuming you have a very good reason not to tell them." "It would put them in danger." Nancy said. She pressed her lips together. Looked down, then back up again. "So instead, I let them ruin their lives all over again." Robin observed her - the bags under her eyes, the mess that was her hair, the broken skin around her nails from picking and biting. "Nance," she said. "You know it wasn't your fault, right?" Nancy stares ahead, unmoved. The street was dark and silent. "I'll be droping you at your house, now," she said. "Call me if you have any headaches, or if you have a nosebleed or just... see something." Robin nodded. "Alright."
Next time they talk about Barb it's... well, it's complicated. I don't have anything written for it, but I know it'll be a lot, because they talk about a lot of things - there's Nancy's survivor's guilt, there's Robin feeling like a burden, and most importantly, Nancy confessing she was in love with Barb, and that thinks she died because she was so scared of it that she rushed to sleep with a boy, when she should've been looking out for her. So forgive her if she's not going to run away from her feelings for Barb, now. Last time she did, it got her killed. If maybe she hadn't been so cowardly, Barb may have lived, and she misses her so much today, she has so much love inside of her with nowhere to go, that she can't keep pretending she didn't love her anymore.
It shakes Robin to her core - this is comphet!Robin after all, she's in a whole different wavelength and she's frozen from hearing Nancy talk - but it does put some things into perspective.
Next time they talk about Barb, it's less dramatic. They couldn't sleep, so they're having some tea at midnight, and it's Robin who starts - tells her about she and Barb's childhood mischief. Or rather, her own mischief, with Barb behind her keeping her out of trouble. Nancy's lips twitch into a tiny smile. "Sounds just like Barb," she says. "Between her and me, she was always the sensible one."
They exchange anecdotes - Robin tells Nancy about Barb's childhood, and Nancy tells her about her teenage years (Robin can't help but notice, in Nancy's words and tone, just how deeply her love runs. How she mentions the little things. How she found each small gesture so endearing and precious). Together, it's like they're putting together a tapestry of who Barb was, the whole of her, and at the same time, they get closer to her. Despite her absence, they get to know Barb better. Nancy cries, because how could she not? But they're not entirely sad tears. She's happy, too, because she hasn't felt this close to Barb in years.
They visit her grave together one time. Nancy brings her flowers, and she sits on the ground and talks to her. She tells her about her day and how the world of the living is doing, and about her old friend, Robin, whom she supposes is now their friend. Robin isn't as sure of what to say, so she just says they both miss her, and that she'll take care of Nancy now, the same way Nancy takes care of her.
She holds Nancy's hand, in hopes it'll be comforting. Nancy squeezes back.

He’s so fucking stupid. Standing there in the clothes he changed into after school- his loafers and a clean sweater, because he doesn’t bother with what he wears at school anymore, but for this he’d wanted to look presentable. Now, on the Holland’s front stoop, with Raymond Holland staring at him like Steve’s an alien that just landed on his front lawn, he feels exactly how stupid he’s obviously been.
“I thought- shit, I mean damn- I mean, I’m sorry. I thought- because Nance and I come over on Tuesdays. And today’s Tuesday, so I assumed- “ he trails off. When you assume you make an ass out of you and me, that was the corny phrase Mrs. Winkler his freshman English teacher was so fond of saying. But the only ass here is Steve. Even with his romance with Nancy officially over he’d assumed that the weekly dinners at the Hollands were still a thing.
Nancy had declared as much of the truth as could safely be exposed to the wider world, and it was clear from the TV interviews that that meant more to the Hollands than anything in the world. But the cameras were gone now, and their daughter was still dead, and Steve had assumed that he and Nancy were on cordial enough terms that they could share a meal in company. He hadn’t wanted the Hollands to think he stopped coming the minute he wasn’t getting into Nancy’s pants anymore, that he didn’t care about what had happened to their only child at his house.
“Didn’t realize that we- that there was a change of plans.” He turns to go, not just warm with embarrassment but downright buzzing with it. Stupid stupid stupid. Stupid Steve. Even if Nancy had been continuing to visit every week, obviously no one cared if he came or not. But Nancy had given them closure, and here he was acting like nothing had changed. Because it always took him twice as long to get the memo.
“Wait!” A hand lands on Steve’s shoulder. “You don’t have to go. We weren’t expecting Nancy but Marsha and I- we’d still appreciate the company. If you don’t think it’d be too boring, having dinner with a pair of old fogies like us.”
“No- I mean yes, that is- of course. Thank you for having me.” He’s falling back on manners, the first lesson ever drummed into him, and he cringes, knows how lame it sounds. You sound like a robot, Tommy had once teased him, not even a robot. Robot’s too interesting. You sound like a sock puppet. Please and thank you’s not a personality.
If Steve has a personality he’s not sure what it is anymore. But adults don’t usually seem to care about that, so it’s probably alright with the Hollands. He lets Ray usher him into the familiar entryway. “To be honest,” the man continues in a low tone, “It’ll be good for Marsha to have something to do. She had so much fire, so much purpose finding what happened to- our Barb.” Steve’s never yet heard him manage to say his daughter’s name in a normal tone of voice. “Since the news, it was a blessing to know the truth. But now I don’t think either of us really know what to do with ourselves.”
Marsha Holland rises from the sofa when they come in. She’s dressed nicely as always, outfit well chosen and coordinated, but rumpled as though she’d gone through all the preparations of dressing and styling, then laid down and slept for hours. “Oh Steve, how nice. We weren’t expecting you.”
The dining room table is piled with notebooks, pens, magazines, newspapers, all of it clearly dated from before the news conference. It leaves only one spot clear to sit at. “Excuse the mess. We haven’t been sitting down to meals properly.” She hurriedly clears the table.
“I thought we were- that is, Nancy never mentioned that dinner was cancelled.” Steve shifts from foot to foot. “Sorry, I should have called. I can go, really, you don’t have to go to all this trouble.”
“Please, it’s no trouble, sit.” She pulls out a chair for him. “Let me see what I have. Nothing’s defrosted but maybe there’s a frozen lasagna.” Marsha disappears into the kitchen, leaving Steve and Ray at the table both staring at their hands.
“So- ”  “How is- ” They speak at the same time, then laugh awkwardly and lapse into silence. Marsha returns a moment later, her mouth wide, not a smile but trying to be.
“I’m sorry, this is so embarrassing. I’m afraid I have nothing in the house. I haven’t done the shopping since- haven’t been this week. We’ve just been eating sandwiches, Ray and I.”
“We can order- ” Ray starts. And Steve sees the abyss of time it would take to deliver the food. What could he possibly say to them in all that time?
“Sandwiches are fine, great even. I love sandwiches.” God he’s the worst. Steve Harrington: manners and sandwiches.
“Oh but it’s just peanut butter and jelly. I don’t have any cold cuts.”
“That’s ok, I haven’t had peanut butter and jelly in forever.”
They’re both smiling uncertainly at him. Steve hasn’t been smiled at this much in he can’t remember how long.
“That’s sweet of you to be so understanding. I’ll just- excuse me a minute while I fix them.” She turns to leave again.
Steve leaps to his feet. “Let me help!” In the kitchen he can do something, in the kitchen they can at least talk about kitchen things, he can ask them where things are, where they go.
“If you’re sure?” He nods. Well let’s all go. You can tell me what jelly you like. And do you want crunchy or smooth?”
In the kitchen she shows him a half-full jar of smooth and a nearly scraped empty jar of crunchy Skippy. Mr. Holland starts taking plates out of a cupboard. Steve was right for once. They move more easily, talk like real people as they pass bread and jelly along the counter.
“This is good,” he says taking a bite, “I never had peanut butter and marmalade before, but it’s really good.”
“Thank you. It was- Barb liked marmalade. We never cared for it particularly. She liked to have it on toast while we did these silly English accents- ” Mrs. Holland cuts herself off.
Oh shit, he’s done it again. Stupid Steve.
“Sorry, sorry. I didn’t mean to...”
“It’s alright,” and even though she hadn’t been able to finish the memory, her voice sounds as though it might actually be alright.
“It’s nice to talk about her to someone,” Ray says, “We tell each other the same things over and over. Nancy’d been her friend so long, she let us talk but of course she knew all the stories already. ‘S nice sharing her with someone new.”
“Well,” Marsha says briskly, “How are you Steve. We were sorry to hear about you and Nancy, but I’m glad you two are still on good terms. I think it’s very mature of you both.”
“How’s school? Heard from any of those early admissions?” Ray asks.
The sandwich is suddenly dry in Steve’s mouth. He’s ready to lie, to give the usual brush-off grownups secretly want. Maybe because these two seem to be fumbling around their lives the way he’s fumbling around his. Maybe because the lie is such a short answer, and then he’d have all that empty space to fill up with talk about what? Whatever the reason, he tells them.
“I never sent them.” His voice is quiet, directed at his plate. “Shit- I mean damn- I mean, sorry.” He’s doing it again, what is wrong with him? “Please don’t say anything to my parents.” When he looks up they’re both looking back at him, some expression he can’t quite identify. But it isn’t anger, or disappointment or annoyance, so there’s that.
“Your parents don’t know?” Ray asks.
Then Marsha, “Did you forget?”
Steve shakes his head. “I don’t know why I never sent them. I did the essay. I got my recommendations sent in. It’s just filling out the forms left, name and birthday. It should be easy. But I just... they’re in my desk drawer at home, and it’s like there’s an invisible wall between me and the drawer and I don’t know why I kept not sending them, and now its past most of the deadlines...”
“Do you wish you had sent them? Now, do you want to fix it, I’m sure there are ways to get an extension if you try,” says Marsha gently.
“No.” It’s weird, surreal he thinks is the word Nancy would use, to hear himself say these things out loud. “I don’t want to stay in high school. God do I not want to stay in high school! But when I think about leaving, about college and whatever- it feels like trying to climb Mount Everest.” He cringes at his own melodrama. “I’m sorry. I shouldn’t be complaining to you. You’re probably thinking how excited Barb was for college and I’m just- whining, being selfish, lazy.”
“I don’t think you’re lazy,” says Ray. “Like you said, you did the hard part. If something got you stuck on the last step, just couldn’t bring yourself to lick the stamp- that isn’t lazy. I don’t want to tell you your own mind, but that doesn’t sound like lazy.”
“You came here tonight, even though you’re not going out with Nancy. A selfish person wouldn’t do that. Barbara was always thrilled about college, but that doesn’t make you selfish for not wanting it. Kids are different, they have different strengths. And people take all different paths through life.”
“I don’t know what to tell my parents. My dad’s gonna be so so mad at me.”
“Tell him to call me. You’re young, you’re bright. You aren’t in jail or on drugs or failing out of school,” says Ray. “He should be jumping for joy just to- just to have you. You can tell him that from me. Or I’ll tell him myself.
“Tell them you didn’t get in- just that, you didn’t get in. No need to lie. And I guarantee you that in ten years it won’t matter.”
“Really?” Steve asks.
“If you’re meant to go, you’ll go. When you’re ready.”
They’ve hit him with so many new ideas, things Steve had never considered, never imagined that others, adults, would consider. That he hadn’t committed some cardinal sin, some irredeemable error. That his life wasn’t over. It was still a blank in his mind, whatever the future might be, but maybe it was blank not like the eggshell colored walls of his parents’ house but like a canvas. He could put anything on it. Whatever he liked. The Hollands made quiet conversation with each other while he thought.
Mrs. Holland stood, reaching for the empty plates. Steve stood as well, trailing after her with the stacked glasses. “Oh no, dear, you sit, you’re a guest.” “You did us a favor just coming here.”
“No really,” says Steve, and means it, “I’d like to help.”

@madwheelerz with your theory about some characters having time manipulation powers in mind I want to write another one.
1984. Both Will and Barb are taken into the Upside Down by the demogogon. Barb's dead and Will is alive, but badly traumatized and the trauma is haunting him throughout the whole show, but it's especially shown in s2 with the Mind Flayer. One year after.
Tumblr media
1x01: The Vanishing of Will Byers/2x01: The Weirdo on Maple Steet
1985. Both Billy and Fred got into an accident. Billy's possessed by Vecna and is killed by the monster, controlled by Vecna by the end of the s3 and Fred is traumatized. As with Will, his trauma is haunting him and Vecna uses it against him and kills him the year after.
Tumblr media
1&2x03: The Mall Rats/2x04: Vecna's Curse
1986. Max and Mike. Both are distant from their loved ones, both are acting weird, both have the shared trauma connected to the Upside Down. Max is Vecna's target throughout the whole s4. Vecna Curse. She is killed by Vecna but her heart starts working again. However, we don't see much of Mike's thoughts and struggles during s4, so it will be revealed in s5, as we are still in 1986. I'm m more than convinced he'll be Vecna's next target.
Tumblr media
8x03: The Battle of Starcourt /4x04: Dear Billy
And we have Barb's mother, Marsha (=warlike) Holland (=wooded land), who also wears her watch in her right hand. We don't have much information about her, but we know that Barb is the same age as Nancy, so let's say, she is around Mrs Wheeler's age. And Mrs Wheeler is around Alice Creel's age. This leads us to 1959. Alice Creel was killed by her brother Henry/001/Vecna. What if Alice and Marsha are somehow related? Maybe she also was Henry's target the same year?
And wait, in 1959 we do have 2 victims - a mother and a daughter. Virginia and Alice. What if Marsha is actually Alice? So, 11 people in total: Virginia, Alice, Will, Barbara, Billy, Crissy, Fred, Max, Patrick, Mike and El?

Siempre a tu lado (EEUU.

The Mommy Myth by Susan J. Douglas and Meredith Michaels
Tumblr media
“Intensive Mothering” as defined by sociologist Sharon Hays.
“New Momism” originated in 1942 with Philip Wylie’s book Generation of Vipers where he attacked (let’s be real) moms for being smothering and turning their sons, America’s soldiers into weaklings as “Momism”. This new definition refers to a highly romanticized and demanding view of motherhood where standards for success are impossible to meet.
“Intensive mothering insists that mothers acquire professional-level skills such as those of a therapist, pediatrician (’Dr. Mom’), consumer products safety inspector, and teacher, and that they lavish every ounce of physical vitality they have, the monetary equivalent of the gross domestic product of Australia, and, most of all, every single bit of their emotional, mental, and psychic energy on their kids. We must learn to put on the masquerade of the doting, self-sacrificing mother and wear it at all times. With intensive mothering, everyone watches us, we watch ourselves and other mothers, and we watch ourselves watching ourselves. How many of you know someone who swatted her child on the behind in a supermarket because he was, say, opening a pack of razor blades in the toiletries aisle, only to be accosted by someone she never met who threatened to put her up on child-abuse charges?....Motherhood has become a psychological police state.”
Tumblr media
“Intensive mothering is the ultimate female Olympics: We are all in powerful competition with each other, in constant danger of being trumped by the mom down the street, or in the magazine we’re reading. The competition isn’t just over who’s a good mother--it’s over who’s the best. We compete with each other; we compete with ourselves. The best mothers always put their kids’ needs before their own, period. The best mothers are the main caregivers. For the best mothers, their kids are the center of the universe. The best mothers always smile. They always understand. They are never tired. They never lose their temper. They never say, ‘Go to the neighbor’s house and play while Mommy has a beer.’ Their love for their children is boundless, unflagging, flawless, total. Mothers today cannot just respond to their kids’ needs, they must predict them--and with the telepathic accuracy of Houdini. They must memorize verbatim the books of all the child-care experts and know which approaches are developmentally appropriate at different ages. They are supposed to treat their two-year-olds with ‘respect’. If mothers screw up and fail to do this on any given day, they should apologize to their kids, because any misstep leads to permanent psychological and/or physical damage. Anyone who questions whether this is the best and the necessary way to raise kids is an insensitive, ignorant brute. This is just common sense, right?”
Tumblr media
“According to postfeminism, women now have a choice between feminism and antifeminism and they just naturally and happily choose the latter. And the most powerful way that postfeminism worked to try to re-domesticate women was through the new momism. Here’s the progression. Feminism won; you can have it all; of course you want children; mothers are better at raising children than fathers; of course your children come first; of course you come last; today’s children need constant attention, cultivation, and adoration, or they’ll become failures and hate you forever; you don’t want to fail at that it’s easier for mothers to abandon their work and their dreams than for fathers; you don’t want it all anymore (which is good because you can’t have it all); who cares about equality, you’re too tired; and whoops--here we are in 1954.”
A doozy? Well re-reading this tome made me think of the moms on Stranger Things and the fan reactions to them. I in fact thought of this book because the demands of motherhood have changed since the 1970s when most of the Party where growing up and there was an anti-feminist backlash around that time that culminated in a media that co-opted the idea of feminism and exploited boomer anxiety about raising their kids without the trauma of their childhoods.

Why every girl/woman in Stranger Things is a badass:
Joyce Byers:
Fights tooth and nail to find her missing boy, even when the whole town is convinced she’s overreacting or going crazy, even her own son.
Going into the upside down in a hazmat suit because she’ll be damned if she isn’t there the second they find Will
Screaming at Lonnie for being the worthless piece of shit that he is.
Raising her two sons on her own!!!!!! Working her butt off to provide for them!!!!
Fights doctors who she knows have the power to wipe her off the face of the earth.
Put the death of her significant other on the back burner to take care of her son.
Claudia Henderson:
Raises Dustin on her own!!!!
Really cares about him and what he’s doing!!!!
Supports his interests, even if she thinks they’re a little odd
Mrs. Sinclair:
Is supportive of her children
Dealt with Billy before he went to visit Karen and somehow she managed to not strangle him
Karen Wheeler:
Raises three children (pretty much on her own, because wE ALL KNOW HOW USEFUL TED IS)
Supported her friend Joyce after the loss of her son!
Desperately wants her children to know that they can talk to her about anything
Has to keep secrets about probably the most horrifying time of her life, where her son almost got killed because of what happened with El and Hawkin’s lab.
Nancy Wheeler:
TAKES IT UPON HERSELF TO CAPTURE AND KILL THE DEMOGORGON
Slices her own hand open to attract it.
Sets up fucking bear traps
IS AN INCREDIBLE SHOT
DAMSEL IN DISTRESS WHERE? WHO? NOT NANCY WHEELER!
Keeps what happened to Barb a secret from her parents even though it is literally eating her up on the inside. But she knows it’s for their protection.
GOT JUSTICE FOR BARB BY PURPOSELY GETTING TAKEN BY HAWKIN’S LAB
SUPPORTS JONATHAN WHILE HE WATCHES HIS BROTHER PRETTY MUCH GO THROUGH AN EXORCISM!
Barbra Holland:
Tries to protect Nancy from becoming somebody that she’s not.
Never strays from who she is even though she has pressure from the outside.
Marsha Holland:
Has never given up hope of finding her daughter
Is willing to risk her livelihood if it means she can get answers to what happened to her.
Terry Ives:
Never gave up hope of finding her daughter!!!!!!
PRETTY MUCH BROKE INTO HAWKINS LAB TO SAVE HER!
Becky Ives:
Has been taking care of her catatonic sister for at least a decade.
Supports El in her quest to find out what the hell happened and how to connect with her mother.
Doesn’t think El is crazy for trying to connect telepathically.
Eleven:
Do I even have to say why she’s a badass I mean COME ON?
Escapes Hawkins lab after straight up murdering her captors.
Runs into the night with just an oversized tee shirt.
Saves Mike and the party more times than anybody can count
Puts herself into scary and life-threatening situations to save Will Byers who she has never even met before.
GOES UP TO SINGLE-HANDEDLY FIGHT THE DEMOGORGON
LIVES ON HER OWN IN THE WINTER IN THE WILDERNESS FOR GOD KNOWS HOW LONG
knocked a bitch out using only a squirrel
Kept herself isolated from Mike for almost a year because she knew it was the safest thing for her and for him.
Sought out her mother despite knowing it was probably dangerous
Sought out Kali even though she knew it was dangerous.
CLOSED THE FUCKING GATE TO THE UPSIDE DOWN.
Kali:
TAKING REVENGE ON EVERY PERSON WHO HURT HER!!!!!
Coming up with a rag-tag team of misfits and all of them supporting and protecting each other
Living without much knowledge of her family or where she came from.
CAN MAKE PEOPLE SEE WHATEVER SHE WANTS THEM TO SEE! BADASS.
Helps El come to the conclusion of who she is and who she wants to be, even if the two of them don’t agree.
Max Mayfield:
Doesn’t tolerate creepy behavior from the party.
Says what’s on her mind
Defeats a bunch of stereotypes by skateboarding and being good at video games and not dressing in stereotypically ‘girly’ outfits.
Stands up to and defies her brother when he’s being a dick, no matter what.
Understands her brother’s rage but doesn’t tolerate it when it becomes abusive.
Stabs that bitch in the neck with a tranq
then threatens his dick with a baseball bat
Demands he leaves her and her friends alone.

Recently watched: The Girl in the Black Stockings (1957). Tagline: “She was every inch a teasing, taunting “come-on” blonde … and she made every inch pay off!” I’m using this period of enforced social isolation to explore the weirder corners of YouTube for long forgotten and obscure movies. (My boyfriend is accompanying me only semi-willingly).
Look, I don’t mean to overpraise what’s essentially a lurid minor exploitation b-movie. But in terms of low-brow fifties pulp thrills, the addictively trashy Girl in the Black Stockings veritably pulsates with prurience, misogyny, twisted psychology and an almost tangible revulsion towards sex. And it condenses its shock-by-shock twists into a taut 73-minutes.
While vacationing at The Parry Lodge, a luxe mountain resort in Utah, hunky Los Angeles-based attorney Dave Hewson (Lex Barker) tentatively romances shy Beth Dixon (Anne Bancroft), the hotel’s switchboard operator. We first encounter the couple dancing by moonlight at an outdoor pool party. “Are you breathing this hard because of me or the altitude?” Hewson suavely inquires.  Their tryst is abruptly ruined when he lights a cigarette, and the flame illuminates a brutally slain female corpse in the bushes. The dead woman is Marsha Morgan – the local “good time girl” (prepare for lots of slut-shaming and blame-the-victim talk). Her throat has been slit – and her black stockings are in shreds! Suddenly, every guest and employee at Parry Lodge is a suspect – and what a menagerie of freaks they are! They’re all hiding sordid secrets, and they all seem guilty as hell. One thing’s for sure: as Hewson surmises, “We’re not dealing with an ordinary killer committing an ordinary crime!”
The hotel’s proprietor is Edmund Parry (Ron Randell), an embittered misanthropic quadriplegic who viscerally loathes women in general and Marsha Morgan in particular. “I must say, the man-eating witch deserved it!” he’s apt to declare. “She was poison. Like a disease! A common creature whose every word, every breath, every gesture, was the show of an empty shallow strumpet. Miss Morgan was an example of a completely justifiable homicide!” Edmund is doted on by Julia (Marie Windsor), his devoted-to-the-point-of-incest sister. Does Edmund’s paralysis eliminate him as the killer? (It’s hinted his disability is psychosomatic). And what about the hotel’s knife-wielding, blood-splattered Native American handyman Joe (Larry Chance)? Due to an alcoholic black-out, he can’t account for his actions on the night of Marsha’s murder. Or bad boy ex-con sawmill employee Frankie (Gerald Frankie), who was sexually entangled with Marsha? Meanwhile, faded matinee idol Norman Grant (John Holland) is staying at Parry Lodge while preparing for a screen comeback, accompanied by his platinum blonde paramour Harriet Ames (Mamie Van Doren). As more dead bodies begin cropping up (cut to newspaper headline exclaiming “Maniac Strikes Again!”), it becomes apparent a serial killer is stalking this remote desert town. Who will be next?
The Girl in the Black Stockings certainly boasts a fun ensemble cast.  By this point, premium fifties beefcake leading man Lex Barker (a former husband of Lana Turner’s) had already portrayed Tarzan and was yet to feature in Federico Fellini’s La Dolce Vita (1960). Barker’s facial expression is permanently set to “pensive squint”, but we get copious glimpses of his wondrous physique, so who’s complaining? Today we remember Anne Bancroft as a heavy-weight credible “prestige” talent, but before she won her 1962 Best Actress Academy Award for The Miracle Worker, she paid her dues in b-movies like Don’t Bother to Knock (1952), Gorilla at Large (1954) and this one. Character actor John Dehner plays local sheriff Jess Holmes as if he’s wandered in from a Western. Tough-as-nails film noir broad Marie Windsor is cast against type in a virtuous “good girl” role. The Girl in the Black Stockings’ poster mischievously hints archetypal fifties bad girl and personification of moist womanly needs Mamie Van Doren is the film’s star (and the titular girl in the black stockings). In fact, her third-billed role as “the stunning blonde who lived for pleasure” is surprisingly small. Ultimately, it’s Ron Randell’s ferocious performance as the twisted-by-hatred Edmund that leaves the most indelible impression.
Because it was made in ’56 (when the Motion Picture Production Code was still enforced), The Girl in the Black Stockings can only imply the violence and kink. All the murders occur off screen, but the script compensates by having characters describe the mutilations in gruesome detail (“A girl was slaughtered and carved-up like a side of beef tonight!” “Those arms! Cut up like a jigsaw puzzle!”).  Some particularly vivid moments: when one of the potential culprits is cornered by the cops at the lumber mill, he panics and falls into a buzz saw! And when a little girl discovers a dead body floating face down in the hotel’s pool, she giggles, “Look at that funny man!” Foreshadowing Alfred Hitchcock’s Psycho (1960), William Castle’s Strait-Jacket (1964), eighties slasher films and even David Lynch’s Twin Peaks (think of Marsha Morgan as the equivalent of Laura Palmer), The Girl in the Black Stockings offers a tawdry good time.
Watch the film here.
