STRANGER THINGS LADIES APPRECIATION WEEK: DAY 7 FREE THEME
Minor characters are brief flickers of light that quickly go extinguished, but shine very brightly when they’re on screen.

This moment keeps me up at night—
Tumblr media
because it doesn’t align with what we’re being told the entire season.
The point that they tell us explicitly in the dialogue in season one is that Joyce was right about everything.
Tumblr media
She wasn’t hallucinating, she wasn’t out of her mind, she was right.
So then, if Joyce was right about everything, if she wasn’t just hallucinating Will in a bout of hysteria, why then choose to show us a clear example where she is hallucinating Will?
Unless she wasn’t.
I will admit that there is a chance that this is just a dream or a hallucination. Joyce is very sleep deprived and was just told that her son had died. I wouldn’t put it past her to have dream visions of her newly dead son. The scene is also presented as if this is the case, with Joyce shown sleeping before seeing Will and then sharply waking up after the fact.
Tumblr media
So okay, case closed, maybe it’s looking like this really is just a dream situation after all 😂 but I wanna just entertain the harmless idea that maybe the audience is being mislead with the dream allegations.
So the scene above actually happens right after we get the first confirmation that Will is still alive, when El is able to find him singing over the radio.
Tumblr media
So we learn that Will is still alive at the top of the episode, the title sequence plays, and then we get a scene where Will appears right in front of Joyce. The sequence of events should be enough to at least raise an eyebrow.
At the end of the episode, Joyce recieves the verification for herself when Will is able to make contact with her. I want to point out that Will is able to do so while screaming for his mom, exactly the same thing that “dream” Will was doing.
Tumblr media
So what do I think? That Will was actually physically in the Rightside Up? That he some how got through and then decided to go back in?
Well, no, not exactly, but he could have been doing some form of shadow walking— or his consciousness travelling to the other plane.
Of course since I’m a Will has powers truther I think that his powers are at play here. Shadow walking is brought up by Dustin in the subsequent episode—
Tumblr media
And we see this very type of thing in season two with Will’s true sight.
Tumblr media
Was Will just seeing into the Upside Down? Or was there a projection of himself that was physically in the UD? I’m going to say in the latter option, considering that the Mind Flayer was able to physically enter Will’s body during one of these true sight episodes.
Bringing it back to the scene at the very beginning of the post, I’d like to propose that this is what Will was doing, using his powers to shadow walk into the RU from the UD.
I don’t think Will waa be aware that he was using his powers. He was thrown into a high stakes situation, scared, and desperately wanted to get back to his mom and his powers were running amuck without him consciously knowing. This instance of him shadow walking to reach his mom is similar to what happens with the lights, his powers are activating as a way to reach his mom. It’s also implicated through dialogue that the thing with the lights is because of Will.
It would make total sense for his powers to activate in this way, even if he wasn’t conscious it was powers, based on how we know powers work in the show. It’s when El remembers the strong love that her mother feels for her that she is able to unlock her ability to open gates, a unique power that El herself probably didn’t even know she had.
Tumblr media
So all of this being said, while made to be believable that Joyce was just dreaming, there’s still enough evidence to suggest that this image of Will was a manifestation of his powers.
Think about it this way, if you wanted Will having powers to be a twist, then you would want to write it in a way where the hints are all there, but there’s enough room to believe that the opposite is also true, so you aren’t playing all of your cards all at once. If Joyce was undoubtedly awake and seeing a vision of Will, that would be way too obvious right off the bat.

I’m gonna tell you right now—if we don’t get a plot about the realities and ramifications motherhood in S5 im gonna be so confused.
Between the parallels of normalcy v stepping “out of line” in a son with Karen / Mike and Virginia / Henry, realities of a loving motherly presence between Joyce and Terry for El, the way a son “being different” comes up for both Will and Henry but there’s a difference in Joyce supporting and Virginia trying to suppress…I will be in the walls of the duffer compound if they don’t explore this to the fullest extent. I am so serious lmao
Also we never talk about the Mike & Henry parallels as a wider people, and we need to. Will mirrors him in half a million ways I know, but…Mike’s push and pull with “normalcy” while grating against it + how isolation and insecurity is becoming a clear theme for him, given how “normal” literally comes up in Henry’s monologue to El, all the Wheelers struggle with conformity, and Vecna goes after people’s insecurities? The way Will is a target right alongside Mike, and they’re paired off as a team even outside of their romance? COME ON

ELEVEN FROM STRANGER THINGS IS NOT JANE IVES AND I CAN PROVE IT.
I've been rewatching Stranger Things before we cancel our Netflix subscription, and while I've always believed El is not Jane Ives, I can prove it now after this rewatch.
So, let's start with Season 2, where El finds out that her mama is still alive.
Tumblr media
She finds Terry Ives' files that Hopper stupidly kept in his cabin (literally, Hop, you have an ENTIRE office to put that stuff in, why did you put it in your CABIN?)
And like Jim and Joyce, come to the conclusion that SHE IS Terry's lost daughter.
Tumblr media
So she sets out to find Terry. Once she does, she talks with Becky, tells her who she is, and then talks with Terry in a special sorta way that only they can do.
Tumblr media
El goes up to the woman she believes is her mother, and says "Mama, it's me, Jane. I'm home."
AND TERRY'S FIRST WORDS TO HER LONG LOST DAUGHTER, THE CHILD SHE LITERALLY ENDURED YEARS OF TORTURE, RIDICULE, AND MOCKERY FOR, LOOKS AT THIS GIRL CLAIMING TO BE HER DAUGHTER, AND SAYS NO.
And THEN she shows her what happened to her.
Tumblr media
When she shows El that she had a dangerous and traumatic labor, she shows that she had an emergency C-section.
KEEP THIS IN MIND, IT'S IMPORTANT.
Also, she shows a different lab, a different rainbow room, and two little girls who, specifically, were wearing normal clothing and who did not have buzz cuts.
Tumblr media
El understands that Terry wants her to find someone, but she thinks it's the other girl, Kali?
Tumblr media
If Terry wants her daughter to come home, why send that same daughter who has been gone for over a decade out to find another child that isn't hers?
And Kali doesn't know who El is when they meet? She has to show her tattoo? She literally doesn't recognize her.
Furthermore, when picking out one of the Bad Men to kill, El only remembers the one that she saw in the memories Terry showed her? She doesn't recognize ANYONE else out of all those people except for one person she doesn't know personally?
Then, Season 3 goes by with few references to El's past.
Then we get to Season 4.
Tumblr media
El has lost her powers from her fight with the Mindflayer at the end of Season 3. She is starting to remember her past, and she remembers something completely different from what Terry showed her.
Children with buzz-cut hair and hospital gowns, just like her.
Tumblr media
A different-looking rainbow room from the one Terry saw and was in.
Tumblr media
Then time goes by.
Brenner magically shows up to help El get her powers back, proving that he has connections outside of Hawkins and the Bad Man that El picked for Kali and the others to kill was NOT lying.
Tumblr media
And El slowly gets her memories back. At least enough to remember what happened with 001 and the Upside Down and how things started. Conveniently, the memories of where she was before the lab are ALMOST COMPLETELY in Terry's POV.
Except one very awkward and out of place memory that didn't fit the others.
She remembers her birth. And she remembers going through a tunnel--like a child passing through the birth canal.
Which can only be done via a vaginal delivery.
El remembers being born vaginally.
Why is this detail important?
Because TERRY DIDN'T HAVE A VAGINAL DELIVERY, SHE HAD A C-SECTION.
THEREFORE,
IT IS IMPOSSIBLE for El to be Jane Ives.

Headcanon that when El finally does find Max in the void, she’s not alone. Instead, she finds Max sitting quietly next to El’s mom since we know she can communicate in the void, a part of her is still stuck there. Somehow, El’s mom knew her daughter was in trouble and tried to find her but instead found a scared Max screaming her daughter’s name. She decides then and there that she’s not going to leave her side until El finds her.

If people could take their Will Byers bias glasses off for a second they could see how incredible it was that love has pushed El to fight back twice in S4. When she first fought Vecna she remembered her mom telling her she loved her and it was what gave her the strength to fight. And then in the finale she heard Mike tell her he loves her and that is what gave her the strength to fight Vecna again. That is some poetic beautiful shit for a girl who was abused most of her life!

i honestly cannot get over how much this scene from tfs
Tumblr media Tumblr media
reminds me of terry stuck in her chair in st2
Tumblr media
especially how much her dress is reminiscent of the sheet(?) over henry's lap, and arms in the same pose on the arms of the chair (yes, i know henry is tied down and that's the logical place to do it, but still). even the cuffs on her sweater are visually similar to that of the straps tying henry down
it took me a minute to connect the visual back to terry, but with the general context of the scene in question (brenner talking to henry about the kids in the lab, how he's been behaving well enough that he's now allowed to meet them, etc.) i was immediately looking at it like "this looks like a woman just coming out of a rough pregnancy/delivery who was barred from seeing the kids due to her acting out of sorts/unhealthily." and maybe it's just because of all of henward's mother coding (shoutout to mothergate and the post of all time by james) but with all the sa coding throughout tfs, the weirdness with henry's supposed relation to the lab kids, etc... i definitely feel like it's a connection we're meant to make
and while i don't have the full context from that tfs scene yet, james and em have also said that henry is way out of it in that whole sequence (and you can really tell in the still of him looking down at where brenner is touching him. he looks exhausted). which only further reminds me of terry, not just in the sense of her being involved in hnl drug programs and mkultra, but also her general state after she's been zapped (not to mention how terry has no real way to communicate other than these flashes of memories using her/el's powers, much like how atp henry has no real way to communicate the truth to anyone, including the audience, so we have to form our own conclusions based on the fragmented evidence we're given, but anyway)
which, speaking of...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
sure, a ball gag and a bite block/mouth guard aren't exactly the same thing, but they could be used for similar purposes (in this case, to prevent biting. in the case of terry, to keep her from biting her own tongue. for henry? perhaps the same case, but likely also to prevent biting others if his arms are also strapped down)
and with the question of henry's relation to the lab kids/el specifically, it brings me back to the idea that el and jane might not be the same person at all and it was more of a mixup/el misunderstanding what terry showed her, etc. (which has been talked about countless times before by multiple people but i can't find the posts atm rip im so sorry)
and so if we're meant to make a connection between henry and terry with these visuals, plus with the whole "henry was being kept away from the kids for misbehaving" and "terry was punished for trying to find her child after she was taken from her" ... i feel like it's stupid to not draw a line between the two of them and reach the conclusion that henry fathered (or mothered) at least some of the lab kids. and to then see terry fight so hard to get jane back... only to be shown 001 (some version of henry) doing everything he can to save el as well?
anyway i can't remember where i was going with this post anymore lol. long story short, i think this new visual from tfs is just one more nail in the mothergate coffin, and henry definitely was used to breed more powerful kids, and the close tie to terry just makes me think that he really and truly fathered el

Continuation of this post where I talk about how Will’s powers manifested as a way to reach his mom
There is a visual parallel within the same episode that helps reinforce this point
When Nancy and the gang are trying to contact Dustin in the RU, Nancy has a lightbulb moment (pun intended) “Will found a way to talk to Joyce through the lights.”
Tumblr media Tumblr media
We then get this shot of Nancy’s hand playing with the light particles—
Tumblr media
Which is nearly identical to a shot we get later in the same episode when El recalls a memory of her mom while she’s fighting Henry—
Tumblr media
Notice the shallow depth-of-field, the framing of the hand, the fact that the hands are nearly in the same positions, and the light sparks in both shots. They are practically the same shot.
Now, obviously this isn’t trying to say that Nancy is actually Will’s mom 😂 but I do think they are using a visual parallel in order to say that both El and Will’s situations were similar. They were both in desperate situations, and used the love of their mother’s to unlock a new power.

In S1, Richard Brenner is mentioned twice in the articles about Terry, but we still don't know what really happened to her.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But then in S2, the season in which we see Brenner fry Terry's brain, El finds an article written by Richard Fryer? And we see that name when she looks at Brenner and Terry's photo?
Tumblr media
Richard Fryer. Really? Lmao, ok

so I posted about how the mlvn breakup + Max talking to her mom leading into a Vecna vision making to clear the scenes were at the very least thematic parallels (while mentioning 2 other scenes where the track was used) but I got a couple of asks requesting clarity about what I thought the connection was, so!
Here's a video with all 4 uses of the alt-Eulogy included, with notes demarcating elements that make it clear they're the same.
the scenes are:
El losing her connection to Terry Ives in the Void in 'Will the Wise'
Hopper reaching out to El via radio when she's gone in 'The Spy'
The Mlvn Fight in 'The Monster and The Superhero'
Max's time with her mom turning into a Vecna vision in 'Dear Billy'
Each of these scenes has a familial love undertone (including the mlvn fight if you take all of my other 'parentified mike' commentary at value) while also carrying some element of loss of connection or emotional distance—aka an relational loss to the "actual" loss of death we see for the uses of actual Eulogy (which plays when Nancy cries over Barb while at dinner with her parents, and when Mike is talking about how a recently-dead Bob started the AV club).
TL;DR: when you look at all the other times this track has been used in the show, it becomes clear that its use for the mlvn fight is a coded signifier of the fact that Mike's "care" (and later 'love') for El is platonic-familial, rather than romantic—which is why he struggles to say it to her when she wants him to say it romantically.
Given the fact that in S1 we started with "will you be like my brother," them giving S5 being like 'S4 & S1 had a baby," it is clear with this (along with 4899273 other bits of evidence) that rounding back to the start with these two means we're getting breakup-meets-familial vibes from mvln come S5. Which, if you know El's arc is about found family rather than romance, makes complete sense! lmao
