GNC Is Closing 248 Stores After Filing for Bankruptcy. Here’s the Full List.

GNC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday night, announcing that it expects to close between 800 and 1,200 stores while on the hunt for a buyer for its business.
In a letter to shoppers, GNC said the COVID-19 pandemic “created a situation where we were unable to accomplish our refinancing and the abrupt change in the operating environment had a dramatic negative impact on our business.”
GNC identified 248 stores that will close imminently as part of the restructuring process. Stores are closing in 42 states, as well as in Puerto Rico and Canada.

GNC Is Closing 248 Stores After Filing for Bankruptcy. Here’s the Full List.

GNC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday night, announcing that it expects to close between 800 and 1,200 stores while on the hunt for a buyer for its business.
In a letter to shoppers, GNC said the COVID-19 pandemic “created a situation where we were unable to accomplish our refinancing and the abrupt change in the operating environment had a dramatic negative impact on our business.”
GNC identified 248 stores that will close imminently as part of the restructuring process. Stores are closing in 42 states, as well as in Puerto Rico and Canada.

GNC is closing 248 stores after filing for bankruptcy. Here’s the full list.
GNC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy and announced it would close hundreds of stores.
It identified the first 248 stores that would close.
Here is the list, arranged alphabetically by state.

GNC filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection on Tuesday night, announcing that it expects to close between 800 and 1,200 stores while on the hunt for a buyer for its business. The vitamins and supplements retailer had about 7,300 stores as of the end of March.
In a letter to shoppers, GNC said the COVID-19 pandemic “created a situation where we were unable to accomplish our refinancing and the abrupt change in the operating environment had a dramatic negative impact on our business.”
GNC identified 248 stores that will close imminently as part of the restructuring process. Stores are closing in 42 states, as well as in Puerto Rico and Canada.

Trump taps cancer specialist from Texas hospital to run FDA
President Donald Trump on Friday picked a cancer specialist and hospital executive to lead the Food and Drug Administration.
If confirmed, Dr. Stephen Hahn of the MD Anderson Cancer Center in Houston would inherit a raft of high-profile public health issues, including leading the agency’s response to a wave of underage vaping and the opioid epidemic.
The White House announced the nomination in a statement, citing Hahn’s role as the cancer center’s top medical executive. The Senate will vote on whether to confirm the 59-year-old to the post.
Ned Sharpless, who previously led the National Cancer Institute, has been serving as acting commissioner since April, when Trump’s first FDA chief, Scott Gottlieb, stepped down after less than two years on the job. The administration faced a legal deadline of Friday to nominate a permanent replacement.
Headquartered in the Maryland suburbs outside Washington, the FDA regulates a variety of consumer goods, including prescription drugs, medical devices, tobacco and vaping products, cosmetics and most food.
As head of the FDA, Hahn would be expected to take up the long list of projects kicked off by Gottlieb. Those plans include an effort to make cigarettes less addictive by cutting their nicotine levels and reevaluating the risks and benefits of opioid painkillers. The agency is also grappling with the regulation of CBD, a marijuana-derived compound that has become a trendy additive in foods, drinks and supplements.
“At the beginning of a presidential cycle, a new commissioner has an opportunity to set the agency’s agenda,” said Wayne Pines, a former FDA official who now consults for FDA-regulated companies. “To a certain extent, the next commissioner’s agenda is going to have to include following through on initiatives that Gottlieb undertook.”
Hahn is certain to face intense questioning in the Senate on his approach to regulating electronic cigarettes, as the FDA attempts to reverse what regulators call an epidemic of underage vaping among teenagers.
In September, President Trump announced plans to sweep most flavored e-cigarettes off the market. But anti-vaping advocates are furious that a concrete plan has yet to appear. Meanwhile, vaping companies and retailers argue that the prohibition on fruit, candy, menthol and other flavors could wipe out their industry.
The FDA is also working to find the source of a mysterious outbreak of sometimes-fatal lung injuries tied to vaping.
Unlike many past FDA nominees, Hahn has not worked in Washington or served as a public health official.
“If you don’t know how the game is played — it doesn’t matter how talented you are — you’re at a disadvantage,” said Peter Pitts, a former FDA official who now runs the Center for Medicine in the Public Interest, a nonprofit that receives funding from drugmakers.
But Hahn’s professional colleagues say the internal politics of a large medical center provide ample preparation for the FDA role.
“I think he’s got that awareness of how to work with various difficult stakeholders and people with different policy agendas,” said Karen Bird of the Alliance of Dedicated Cancer Centers, who has worked with Hahn in his role at MD Anderson.
Bird and others credit Hahn with restructuring the cancer center’s operations to avert hundreds of millions in financial losses after he was promoted to chief operating officer in 2017. That plan ultimately led to hundreds of layoffs at MD Anderson, a leading research center affiliated with the University of Texas. Hahn was again promoted last year to the role of chief medical executive, overseeing the center’s 1,100 physicians and other medical staff.
In June, MD Anderson was cited by federal regulators for several safety issues related to the quality of patient care, nursing and laboratory services. The government probe followed the death of a leukemia patient who received a contaminated blood transfusion in late 2018. MD Anderson, led by Hahn, has been working to resolve the issues.
Hahn received an annual salary of over $933,000 from MD Anderson, according to state records filed earlier this year. The FDA commissioner earns roughly $160,000 annually.
Federal records show Hahn has supported Republican candidates and causes, including campaign contributions to former President George W. Bush and presidential candidates Mitt Romney and John McCain. The records do not show donations to the Trump campaign.
Still, some of his longtime friends said they were unaware of his political affiliation until recently.
“I kind of think of him as a middle-of-the-road guy who just does his job,” said Dr. Otis Brawley of Johns Hopkins University, who trained with Hahn at the National Cancer Institute in the late 1980s.
Hahn, a cancer radiation specialist, received his medical degree from Temple University in Philadelphia.

Factbox: List of some reported racial attacks in U.S. deemed to be false
(Reuters) – Actor Jussie Smollett of the television drama “Empire” staged an attack on himself that appeared to have racist and homophobic overtones as a publicity stunt, Chicago police said on Thursday.
The 36-year-old, who is black and openly gay, was arrested and charged with lying to police in connection with the Jan. 29 incident, in which he paid two men $3,500 to strike him and put a noose around his neck, according to police.
Here is a brief list of other incidents in the United States involving discredited reports of racially motivated attacks:
December 2016 – Yasmin Seweid, 18, was charged with filing a false police report after telling police that three white men, yelling the name of then President-elect Donald Trump, had attacked her on a New York City subway for wearing a traditional Muslim head scarf.
January 2016 – Ariel Agudio, Asha Burwell and Alexis Briggs, former students at the State University of New York at Albany, were charged with false reporting and misdemeanor assault after claiming they were racially attacked on a bus by 12 to 20 people, including white men, according to reports by Times Union newspaper. University police accused the three students, who are black, of being the aggressors in the physical altercation and were dismissed from the school.
October 2008 – Ashley Todd, a former volunteer for John McCain’s 2008 presidential campaign, admitted to Pittsburgh police that she lied about being robbed and beaten by a black man after he saw a McCain bumpersticker on her car, according to reports by the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. Todd, who is white, was sentenced to nine months of probation.
October 1994 – South Carolina native Susan Smith drowned her two young sons when she let her car roll into a nearby lake with the boys inside. Smith, who is white, had originally told police that the children had vanished when an armed black man forced his way into the car. She later confessed to the killings and was sentenced to life in prison.
November 1987 – Tawana Brawley, then 15, claimed she was kidnapped and raped by a gang of white men in Wappingers Falls, New York, who used charcoal to scratch racial slurs into her skin. A state grand jury found her story to be untrue and all the men who were accused in the attack were exonerated. Brawley, who is a black woman, insisted years later that her story was true.

Sec. 128. It shall not be lawful to make entry of any ship or vessel, which may arrive from any foreign port, within the United States, or of the cargo on board, elsewhere then at one of the ports of entry established by law, nor to unlade the said cargo, or any part thereof, elsewhere than at one of the designated ports of delivery; but every port of entry shall also be a port of delivery. Act March 2, 1799, Sec. 18.
Sec. 129. The master or commander of every vessel bound to a port of delivery, only, in any of the following districts, to wit, — Portland and Falmouth, except the ports of North Yarmouth, Freeport, and Harpswell; Bath, except the ports of Georgetown and Brunswick; Newburyport, New London; Middletown, except the ports of Lyme, Saybrook, Killingsworth, Haddam, and East Haddam; Norfolk and Portsmouth; Bermuda Hundred, (now Petersburg,) or City Point, Yorktown, Tappahannock, except the port of Urbanna; or Edenton, — shall first come to, at the port of entry of such district, with his ship or vessel, and there make report and entry in writing, and pay, or secure to be paid, all legal duties, port fees, and charges, in manner provided by this act, before such ship or vessel shall proceed to her port of delivery; and any ship or vessel bound to a port of delivery in any district other than those above mentioned, or to either of the ports of delivery above mentioned, may first proceed to her port of delivery, and afterward make report and entry within the time by this act limited.

Democratic candidates out-raise GOP incumbents in 3 districts
While North Carolina Democrats are boasting record fundraising, three Mecklenburg County Democrats have bigger war chests than incumbent Republican lawmakers, according to new finance reports.
Democrats are trying to break the GOP’s legislative “super-majorities.” That would mean the General Assembly could no longer easily override vetoes from Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper.
The state Democratic Party this week announced a record $5.8 million cash on hand at the end of the second quarter. The Republican Party reported just $11,000 on hand. But that doesn’t include the accounts of legislative leaders such as Senate Leader Phil Berger, who has $1.6 million on hand. They typically use it to help other Republicans.
“The overall combined Republican effort between the party, the caucuses and the individual candidates has us in solid position,” said state party Executive Director Dallas Woodhouse.
But in some of Mecklenburg’s most competitive races, Democrats are sitting on more money than GOP incumbents:
▪ In House District 103, in Matthews and southeast Mecklenburg, Democrat Rachel Hunt has $132,700 on hand to Republican Rep. Bill Brawley’s $88,600. Hunt is the daughter of former Democratic Gov. Jim Hunt.
▪ In southeast Charlotte’s District 104, Democrat Brandon Lofton has $95,500 on hand, almost twice as much as GOP Rep. Andy Dulin’s $51,000.
▪ And in Senate District 41, which wraps around west Mecklenburg from the northern to southern suburbs, Democrat Natasha Marcus has $156,000 on hand to Republican Sen. Jeff Tarte’s $137,700. That’s even though Tarte has out-raised her overall, including in the second quarter.
Republican consultant Larry Shaheen said the money on both sides could be dwarfed by outside spending by parties and other groups. Still, he said, it signals a competitive election year.
“What I’m taking away from all this is Republicans are going to have to work harder than they ever have to hold onto their seats,” he said. “No one’s saying that this wasn’t going to be a challenging year.”
What had once been safe GOP districts have become more competitive. Dulin’s District 104 went for Democrat Hillary Clinton in 2016. So did House District 105, represented by Republican Scott Stone.
Stone has a comfortable financial advantage over Democrat Wesley Harris. He has $104,000 on hand to Harris’ $34,200.
“With these well-organized and well-funded candidates (Democrats) can compete on a level playing field with these incumbents,” said Democratic strategist Dan McCorkle.
