The long overdue why TOA Apollo is an enfp analysis for @fearlessinger

(I'm going to preemptively say: If anyone has a different opinion please make a new post instead of in my comments XD )

I'm going to explain using the functions. There are eight functions total: Fi, Fe, Ti, Te, Ni, Ne, Si, Se.

And each mbti type will use 4 of these 8 functions. The order the functions are in determines their type. The first function(dominant function) is used the most, the second is also commonly used, the third is more subconsciously used and the fourth is inferior function which is not as developed and tend to be used in times of crisis as a last resort.

Functions are basically types of thought processes and associated behaviors. And it's only possible to have one of each type of F, T, S, N with extroversion or introversion classification.

Hence it would be impossible for a person to have both Fi and Fe.

I won't go into too much detail on this so if you guys are interested you can look at the link at the end of this post for more details.

But anyways, here we will take a look at the functions and decide what Apollo is.

How much the traits of each function show through depends on their ranking in the 4 stack. Higher ranked functions tend to be used more etc etc.

Lets start: Te vs Fe.

Fe people tend to value the group and the emotional wellbeing of others. They also care about fitting in and belonging to the group. "how does the group feel about this?"

Te people value the group but from a productivity and practical wellbeing standpoint. They care about getting things done effectively.

A very basic example, if deciding if the population should be waiting at a traffic light for a time or have the option to speed past it but crying and sobbing for 1 minute. A Fe person might lean towards letting everyone wait but the Te person might lean towards letting everyone speed through. This is because Fe is considering the emotional state while Te is considering the time wasted from the person's life.

You might be inclined to say then Apollo should be Fe! He cares about his friends! But I'll actually argue he does not have Fe. Recall that a person can only have either Fi or Fe.

Fi people tend to have a personal moral system that is very tied to their sense of self, and a desire to figure out who they are and what they believe in, and where they belong. You can argue that all people do this, but I'll say Fi havers definitely does this way more than average. Especially if the Fi is first or second in the function stack. Fe sees identity as something that is part of you, "I am what I am".

They will never have the thought of "oh i did xyz but that's not really me" Fe will consider that since they did it, it is them.

Apollo is a strong Fi. He values his identity a lot. During TOA, he struggles with his identity after losing what he thinks makes him, well, him. Hence you can see his original concept of his identity was tied to what he could do as a god, and his beauty and powers. Once he lost that, he lost his sense of self. This is devastating for a Fi because their identity is heavily tied with their moral system. Fi make decisions based on their moral compass that they created over their lifetime. This allows them to quickly make decisions based on it in times of crisis. They may say "I FEEL xyz" but the feeling they speak of is generated through their moral system.

Outside input -> Moral system + identity -> feeling - > decision - > action.

An older, experienced Fi user will be able to sense what they are feeling and make quick decisions based on it, and leave the analysis part to their databank of past judgements. However, on the outside this can look rash and like they are making decisions based on emotions (which is true. But there's more to it!)

Apollo lost his sense of self and had to start from scratch. This makes him begin to doubt his morals and past judgements, because they were all part of his old self, and that's now gone. Now how can he make the "right" decision? He no longer knows what is right. He has deluded himself that his choices were right for so long, that once his self is shattered and he is rebuilding his identity from scratch, his entire world tilts. Key word here is delude, he probably already had a sense he was doing something wrong but he ignored it and kept using the old pathways of thought he made to arrive at conclusions. Now that its like this:

Outside input -> ?????? -> feeling - > decision - > action.

It leaves him in constant doubt about his present and past self.

So yeah, Fi.

And Fi users must have Te, so Te as well. But I argue his Te is lower than Fi and not that noticable.

Now, we move to Ne vs Ni.

Ne and Ni are two different ways of thinking and connecting things.

Ne connects thoughts in a spiderweb like pattern and hence has seemingly random jumps and connections. (The grass is green, my shirt is green too and oh, my shirt is from california, and I think california has great icecream and now we are talking about icecream.) Ne tend to derail conversations with their explorations.

Meanwhile, Ni tend to think more linearly on one topic and discuss it to the end. Their thoughts are more like a graph form where they explore along the line. (the grass is green and it is very lush and beautiful. It grows well in the summer etc etc) Notice we are still talking about grass

Apollo's narration is a classic Ne style narration where you see him talk about traveling with Meg and the next thing he's telling you what happened in Egypt 50 A.D.

So now we know he has, Ne, Fi, Te.

We just need to figure out whether he has Si or Se.

Si is focused on memories and familiar things. They like consistency and patterns.

Se is focused on experiences and physical sensation. They like to explore new things and go out.

However since these aren't as obvious, I will first narrow down the possible types.

Mbti with Fi, Ne, Te are:

ESTJ, ISTJ

ENFP, INFP

And since these types don't have Se, we know he has Si.

We can rule out ESTJ and ISTJ because Fi is not as prominent , and are more Te based (see image).

Apollo bases his decisions on his heart (Fi) more than rules and traditions (Si) or productivity (Te).

This means his Fi is either first or second. Which means he's either INFP or ENFP.

And now it's an easy choice because INFP is an introvert.

And Apollo is just… extroverted, he loves being around people, he gains energy around them. He loves meeting new folks. (I can promise you as an INFP, I do not feel this ajjfjsksksk)

Hence.

Apollo is ENFP! A type who follows their heart, is passionate about their interests, loves learning and exploring new things, and curious.

As well, in regards to his Si as his last function (also called the inferior function) . When people are in times of extreme stress, they can sometimes fall back and unhealthily overuse their last function. For example, for Enfps they will go into "Si grip" and begin to have tunnel vision and overanalyze their past mistakes, try to make little detail perfect, project previous bad experiences onto the future, become isolated and withdrawn…

Does this sound familiar and like a certain sun god during TOA…?

Other enfps in fiction, that kinda have traits similar to Apollo: c!Tommy, Steven Universe. (I know ppl say steven is ESFJ but I'll maintain he's enfp based on functions)

introvert/extrovert yeah ok sure

feeling/thinking do you justify being an ass by saying you're right or saying your feelings are valid

percieving/judging: self diagnosing with adhd before it was cool

intuition/sensing: ok given that mbti is jungian you might be like. oh intuition? sounds kinda sketch. is this weird witchy bullshit vs material concerns? but nah. every 'mbti employment personality quiz' thing just treats this as 'do you consider yourself capable of abstract thought and object permanence OR do you like textures and smells' and it's like oh you answered sensing. have you considered, coffee barista? unskilled laborer? middle manager?

i like it because it's like. HELLO we are meyers briggs and our hobby is devising abstract typologies of people. hello women entering the workforce did u know there's 2 types of people: people who like thinking about typologies, classifications, and universal truths. and trashy idiots. but we all have our natural place in society. 😇

summary : the crushing weight of everything and everyone changing is a bit too much. jean wants to bear the burdens with you.

you were used to contradictory sentences. double negatives that were only meant to confuse you, double positives that you thought meant anything but, adorned with a sarcastic smile and a roll of the eyes that left you needing to figure the meaning out yourself.

jean was a walking contradictory sentence. he was a walking double negative, one that you didn't know how to understand. he was blunt but sweet, cold and warm, never being in one spot with his feelings, always on his feet but not running away. somehow he stayed.

all your friends were moving on. every one - sasha was moving out with her boyfriend niccolo, a chef who she had become extremely close to over the past year and who treated her in the highest of regards. your other roomate, Mikasa, was also moving out, but not with her boyfriend, eren, as you had suspected but instead for a chase of starting a new flourishing business of selling handcrafted oxidised jewellery online. that and being closer to eren, she had explained to both you and sasha.

Marco wasnt moving, per say, but he was already applying for his masters in law to broaden his perspective, and there was a prospect of him going abroad for his soon to approach future. he was currently visiting his extended family. Connie, surprisingly, was the first of your friend group to actually get a job at a marketing firm, and even if it was sort of exhausting, people praised Connie's charms and puns that made people buy the products. he was also helping Mikasa with her business, alongside eren and armin.

jean, currently making dinner for the pair of you in your mostly empty apartment, was also interning for an architectural firm. well, he hadn't started yet, but he did get accepted with the interview he gave last month.

and you? even though you were currently looking for new roomates to occupy the now empty spaces in the apartment, you felt lost. sure, you had a plan, and had also applied for a handful of internships, but that didn't mean you knew what you were doing.

you were used to keeping things and people in boxes. it started ever since you were in middle school and had just heard about books like Harry Potter and divergent, books that had a clear distinction of which people belonged where. you'd define people with those distinctions so it was easy to figure them out; it was easier to think of someone in a faction or Hogwarts houses or godly parent instead of actually trying to figure them out with all their complexeties. eventually it graduated into astrological signs that were probably all bullshitted anyway, and into MBTI types. there was always an explanation for something, and if it wasn't given them you'd find it out for yourself as you always had. but you couldn't go by those simple classifications anymore. they were too narrow and too claustrophobic.

but you also hated too-wide expanses that came with simply existing. the expanse of your unknown lifespan, the limitlessness of unlimited time, the enormous amount of things you had yet to learn. it was easy to get lost in nothing. how did your friends and family and all the people around you ever manage to make a clear path for themselves with a multitude of stops and landmarks when you didn't even have the basic gravel and stone and concrete to get started on making a road for yourself? would you be yet another chapter that ended in a fullstop in their thick books that they'd flip away from? the change - the uncertain steps - were never something you looked forward to.

helping mikasa and sasha move out was a challenge, another full stop in their books, helping Connie by teaching him how to properly format professional emails was another landmark that he passed, seeing Marco off at the airport before he caught his flight was another certain step.

the wide tumultous blue of the sea that you were floating in and it's unnerving depth used to be somewhat manageable. you had been swimming with your friends for a long time until your fingertips got all shriveled up, but now it seemed as though they had all swam away from you and towards a shore they were looking forward to, but you werent. the horizon line was all you could see, and you dared not to open your eyes underwater to see how deep the water was.

you were happy for them, ofcourse you were. you loved them with all your heart, and sections of your essential heart were left only for them with their names carved into the ridges of your brain. but the change was too much, too empty, too wide, too limitless, too uncertain.

a knock on the wood of your bedroom door made you turn your swivel chair towards the noise, and jean stood there against the doorframe, leaning on it. "dinner's ready. didn't know which movie to watch, though." he said, and only half of his words are registered by your ears.

you nod, your lips quirking up only slightly. "I'll be there in a bit," you say, watching Jean's brows knit closer together. you loved the way his forehead crinkled in obvious worry and concentration, but you didn't have the tongue to speak out your admirations.

he tilts his head. ever the observant, he asks, "what's wrong?"

his tone is patient. his words demand acknowledgement.

you sigh a little, knowing you can't hide anything from him. you thanked that quality of his, even if it was a little inconvenient at times, because his unrelenting persistence was the reason you felt so loved today, the reason you and jean had gotten closer in the first place.

your shoulders slump, "i dont know how to explain it," you say, because it's true, but also because even if you could explain it, you wouldn't know where to begin. but you begin anyway, even though you know it would end with you trailing off. jean would understand anyway as he always had. "just.... everything's changing... and I, i dont know, i dont really like change, I guess." there's a pause and you refuse to look at his face which you're sure is observing yours carefully as he always does. "it's just...too much." you say, shrugging at the end. "it's too much and I don't know how to deal with this. like everyone's dealing with it better than I am and I don't even know if I've....if I've grown much, if at all. i dont know what I'm supposed to do. i dont know what my role is, like i just, i wish there was an author writing my life so I'd know what to do because I don't know how to...how to do everything myself. i-" you didn't know when the lump had formed in your throat, refusing to be swallowed down anymore after being ignored for months on end. "i dont know anything, jean, and it's scary." you say, and your eyes don't shed tears even if theyre stinging. you wish you could cry just to get it over with.

you were probably overreacting. everyone was doing so great with themselves, and at the end of the day, it wasn't a big deal. so what if everyone would move on with their lives? wasn't that what was supposed to happen? so what if your friends would probably forget you? shouldn't you be glad that you had them in the first place? wasn't it better to have felt alive for the first time than to not have felt it in the first place?

warm and sturdy arms wrapped around your unshaken frame, and you were pulled away from your rolling chair to sit down on your bed. the mattress dipped comfortably under you as it always had and jean smelt like he always did and you took comfort in the predictability. your sheets would smell the same today and tomorrow and the day after, your clothes would be in the same closet, your mirror would be in its same place in the bathroom and jeans arms would always hold you softly.

he held you for a couple minutes as you wallowed in your own sea. your legs were in his lap, leaning your weight on his arms. your eyes were closed, and you felt his warm hands rubbing circles in their place on your thigh and on your back.

you speak again, feeling the need to be understood even though you already were. "i just wish that... that I could freeze time whenever I have a good day." you say, and it's the final nail in your coffin and the final scoop of dirt on your grave. it's all you have to say, it's all jean needs to hear as he holds you a little tighter.

he hums in thought, no doubt thinking of a proper response. sometimes you wish you could take a peek inside his head, just to see, even for a useless moment, what he was thinking about. and more selfishly, if it was about you.

but that didn't matter because who was jean if he didn't speak his mind? his cheek rests on the top of your head and you can feel his warmth, and you wish you could let his warmth spread all over you, you wish that it would ignore the barrier of your skin and go straight to your organs and muscles because your warmth hadn't felt like it had been yours for a very long time and Jean's heat would be much more than welcome. but that was wishful thinking and you feel him kiss the top of your head instead, and you accept it.

"you know," he finally starts, and you can hear his heartbeat. "when we first met I had one of the moments you're talking about. the want to like.... somehow freeze the moment and just relive it forever." he says. you don't move, you don't dare remove your head from his shoulder afraid that if you did, he'd be another thing lost to the depths of your mind.

he continued. "what I'm saying is, i know what you're scared of. that your friends will forget you and move on without you. but... i dont think they will. i dont think anyone can. don't you think just like you have parts of them in you that they have parts of you in them? I've seen it. sasha started talking like you like a month after you guys moved in together. Mikasa likes buying flowers now. Marco texts like you. Connie has so many jokes that only you'd understand. and i-" he says, cutting himself short with a small breathy chuckles that makes your heart dangerously stutter, "i dont think that, god forbid, if we were to ever not be together, i dont think that i would ever be able to forget you. but that's probably because I'm in love with you and that's not changing for atleast this lifetime," another short laugh, "i dont think any of our friends, any of your past friends could ever forget that you existed. i mean, you'd always be there. youd always exist even if it is in the back of their minds.

"and you don't have to know everything. it's not a race. it's just...a nice walk, if anything. you don't have anyone or anything to catch up to. you can take your time, love, and i know it's hard convincing yourself of that, but you can. and if it's any consolation," he says, grabbing your hand that had formed into a loose fist on your knee, encasing your hand in his, "I'm...I'll be here. even if we aren't talking, which I'm pretty sure won't happen, but even if it does, I'm here. i will be." he says, squeezing your fist.

his words breathe comfort into your lungs that rested inside the prison your ribs had become. your chest felt a little lighter, the stubborn knots in your stomach were slowly undoing themselves and maybe his words didn't undo any damage nor did they paint over it but they did help heal.

you breathe in deeply, burrowing yourself even further in his shoulder, and he thankfully gets the message as he holds you tighter, like he's the only twine holding you together. you nod, and he kisses the crook where your shoulders meet your neck.

"thank you," you whisper, something that could get lost in his clothes but he catches it and shakes his head. you know what he's going to say before he even says it and you smile a little.

maybe jean was a contradiction to himself, a double negative, a not not persistence. and maybe you did feel lost, maybe time had swam away from the desperate deathgrip you had on it. but jean was there. he wasn't a fullstop or a chapter, he was more of a "okay, and," sentence, something that continued over with a comma, and he wasn't a guide that held your hand towards the shore, but he was more of an insistent presence that helped you not drown by holding your hand. he wasn't the shore itself, but he did provide the comfort of finding footing against the depths.

not a race, not a stand, just a walk. a walk with your hand in Jean's, a walk with uncertain but hopeful steps.

not a book, not a chapter, just scribbles of incoherent but excited writing in a diary.

Ferid's Repressed Temperament — his ENTP Si grip (a cognitive analysis of Ferid Bathory)

I am going to start this analysis by giving a little introduction about what MBTI is.

MBTI is a personality classification system based on the temperamental schema identified by psychologist Carl Gustav Jung.

This scheme includes the existence of eight cognitive functions, which have a different role of importance in each person. I note that this temperament scheme represents only 20% of the personality, since temperament is one-fifth of the personality scheme, and that no MBTI type should be viewed as a generality or as a fixed pattern. Every human is unique in his own way.

Continuing, according to the MBTI scheme, Ferid is classified as an ENTP. This means that his cognitive functions (the basis on which his personality operates) are the following four: Extroverted Intuition (Ne), Introverted Thinking (Ti), Extroverted Feeling (Se) and Introverted Sensing (Si).

• Extraverted Intuition ( Ne ) refers to the ENTP's ability to see possibilities through their intuition in the outside world, lots of possibilities. It translates into creativity, brainstorming, curiosity.

• Introverted Thinking ( Ti ) refers to the ENTP's ability to internally analyze the information they receive. It provides rigorous, logical, detailed structured thinking and very solid logical support for the first function, Extraverted Intuition.

• Extraverted Feeling ( Fe ) refers to the ENTP's ability to sense and analyze the desires, interests, motivations of those around them, to understand the feelings of others and human nature in general.

• Introverted Sensing ( Si ) refers to how the ENTP perceives personal experiences, experiences that then influence how they make decisions in the present and future.

These four cognitive functions are placed in a developmental hierarchy in the ENTP's cognitive system.

• The first function, Extraverted Intuition is the most developed, the one that develops in the first 10 years of life.

• The second function, Introverted Thinking, develops during adolescence, being a highly developed function in ENTPs, in general.

• The third function, Extraverted Feeling, develops, beginning in adolescence and continuing into adulthood.

• The fourth function, Introverted Sensing, the least developed and insecure for ENTPs, develops towards the age of 30.

Again, these are some statistics and statistics are general.

I have explained quite a bit of theory to be able to understand why Ferid is an ENTP in cognitive functioning and how his childhood developmental environment affected this temperamental foundation of his personality.

I begin by recalling how Ferid confesses to Guren Ichinose, in Wrat19, volume 1, chapter 1, the following:

"How scary. But, ever since I was born, I have never been silent. As Papa and Mama have said. Ever since I came out of the womb, I had an incorrigible mouth. Even so, they were still my parents. What was it again. What were we talking about~ Anyways──"

"Incorrigible mouth", beyond the fact that the term used is very painful for a child, because it means "uncontrollable", "impossible to correct", it can be deduced very simply that Ferid, since he was born, was an extremely talkative, curious, full of ideas child.

However, his parents' reaction was the same. Ferid was repressed by a strict, " saintly " education, as he declares in chapter 91 of the manga:

" I've always been perfectly normal. Especially for someone who was second in line for a royal throne. "

" I had such a strict upbringing. They were teaching me to be a saint. "

We can see in the flashback with him from the age of 16, how this "strict upbringing" manifested itself, by forcing him to adopt an obedient position, in which he humiliates himself in front of his older brother, the heir, and stands aside in the way of his ascension to the throne, even though Ferid is smarter than his older brother and even the brother tells him that if Ferid did not visibly help him, the royal court would split into two warring factions.

It is a learned humility that his older brother is perfectly used to, that his brother even enjoys:

" Sheesh... You've always been like this. " ( His brother tells Ferid )

Since Ferid was raised to be the shadow of his older brother, the heir, he had a clear role for "someone born second to the throne", that of obedient servant of the future king.

Basically, Ferid's natural nature was repressed, subjected to very harsh restrictions. He was assigned a role to be validated, to survive in his family as a child.

This enviroment is very stressful for a child.

And what I want to explain is that under such stressful conditions, where an ENTP personality is under a lot of stress, repression, strict routine, the dominant function, Extraverted Intuition (Creativity, talkativeness, many ideas, curiosity) becomes "useless" in the ENTP's eyes.

Because its intuition through which this temperamental type finds possibilities in the external world is repressed, forbidden to be used and thus, an anomaly occurs, whereby the person will unconsciously change the place of the dominant function ( Ne ) with that of the inferior function, the least developed ( Si ). And this is where things start to break down and what is called the ENTP Si Grip appears.

And Ferid suffers from this ENTP Si Grip, meaning that his dominant function, the one through which his cognitive system navigates, has become Si, Introverted Sensing, the least developed, the one that only develops in his 30s. And this happened in Ferid's childhood.

Why?

Because Ferid was subjected to a strict education, he was repressed with his creativity and ideas, being reduced to a mechanized role that his family imposed on him, that of "saint", or, as I say, "obedient porcelain child ".

" I had such a strict upbringing. They were teaching me to be a saint. " - Ferid Bathory, chapter 91, manga

This brought a lot of stress to the child Ferid and made him, as I explained above, unconsciously, to consider his dominant function, his intuition through which he explores the external world (the ability to see multiple possibilities towards the world and life), meaning, his simple way of being, unnecessary. And in order to survive, his cognitive system starting to navigate through Si, the Introverted Sensing function.

This is very clearly visible in the manga flashback of chapter 134. At 16, Ferid has become unable to see possibilities through his intuition towards the world, life, and above all, he becomes fixated on the idea of stopping reincarnation; idea which will rule the rest of his life, including as a vampire.

Introverted Sensing, as I said above, refers to a projection of personal experiences onto the outside world, onto our present and future decisions. And when this cognitive function is not developed, it creates a "tunnel" vision.

And for ENTPs, this translates into the inability to see other possibilities through intuition and starting to governate their life in order to repair past mistakes, traumas, and the development of fixist behaviors and habits, which provides a false sense of security.

And this is fully visible in the adult Ferid.

As an adult, and a vampire, it can be seen how his style of keeping his hair has not changed at all in a thousand years. It is the same black ribbon, the same bangs. Also his old vampire uniform, white with black collar, with black boots with white soles, is very similar to the white tunic with black collar, and black boots with white soles that Ferid wore when he was 16.

It is also mentioned in the novels that the mansions that Ferid owns are all the same, they have exactly the same design, the same decorations, the same architecture.

We can see very clearly here what I was saying, the development of some fixist habits of Ferid, which would not be normal for someone with an intuition and ability to see ideas as strong as his.

But in all these gestures, one can observe a repetition of some elements from his past, from his childhood, which reinforces what I was saying, that Ferid is governed by the need to repair a "mistake" from his past, that everything he lives in the present, or thinking about the future reconnects to that past trauma.

The trauma of being invisible in his own family, repressed as the second born, and the trauma of realizing he is destined to die and be reborn endlessly for the plans of a broken god.

All these past experiences and achievements limit Ferid's sense of freedom, block his ability to use his intuition to find ideas, solutions, and return him to the same "mistake" from the past that marked him so deeply.

In fact, Ferid as a vampire is closed, stuck in certain patterns, from clothing, hair, to the fixation he developed in causing chaos (behavior opposed to the fixed role of "obedient and holy child" that had been imposed on him in childhood)

And just that, all these things confine Ferid and rob him of his freedom, continue to suffocate him.

Because, cognitively speaking, he is driven by something immaturely developed, weak, insecure and haunted by past experiences (his childhood, the idea of his past reincarnation) in a very deep way.

That is why Ferid as a vampire, in his old uniform, with his old attitude, even if he seems uncontrollable and dominant, does not feel like himself. He continues to hide, now, behind the mask of "bastard monster " what he really feels and closes himself in fixist habits that always remind Ferid of the past that hunts him.

Interestingly, as an adult and a vampire, Ferid is seen wearing ruby earrings.

Earrings appeared to be insignia showing the noble status of powerful men. And the ruby, the stone that Ferid wears, symbolizes the passion and the power of a leader.

Literally, Ferid wears a ruby, which symbolizes the passion and power of a leader.

He, who had no passion as a human teen and was raised as a shadow of a leader (his brother, the heir to the throne in the kingdom).

What I mean is that Ferid's every gesture and habit as an adult (and vampire) speaks of something that happened in his past, shows how he still filters the present and the future through personal past experiences that have marked him.

That is why I say that Ferid suffers from what is called in MBTI language, ENTP Si grip, when he is ruled by the weaker and immature function, the one that projects the mistakes of the past into the decision-making of the present and the future.

Or, simply put, Ferid is stuck in his past and his freedom is thus restricted. It is not a natural state for someone with his nature, it is the result of psychological abuse (the depersonalization to which he was subjected through repressive education) of an immense stress felt as a child and of the terrifying realization that even on the divine plane, he is only a pawn on the game board of a broken god, holding him captive to the same fate indefinitely.

However, what I want to point out is how Ferid changed his clothes in the story. Since he was burned at the stake, a moment that I consider symbolic for him, he started wearing a white shirt, black pants, classic black shoes, black gloves and a black cape. His earrings are gone too.

Sometimes Ferid even wears his hair down.

I can say that he looks a lot more like himself now, a lot more comfortable as who he is, actually.

And this change of clothes came after he officially allied himself with humans.

Basically, when Ferid got out of his fixist routine of being the "monstrous enemy", another role behind which he was hiding.

Thus, in these new clothes, Ferid sometimes starts to say things about his past, like when he told the Shinoa team that he too was lied to that he was Michaela, "the chosen one", but that he ended up being abandoned by Rígr Stafford, or when he rebels against Rígr in chapter 91 and mentions his frustration at being subjected to a very strict upbringing meant for a "second-born to the throne", or when he states how lonely he is always felt in chapter 112, looking at Shinoa Team hugging each other.

Basically, Ferid begins to bring to the surface fragments of his past that marked him painfully and haunted him for a thousand years, and gradually, to search more clearly for his freedom, his meaning of being.

That is why I consider his clothes to be a symbol for him.

As a child, and as a vampire, before, the dominant in his clothes was white. He seemed very "closed" in the 16-year-old tunic and the vampire one, fixed there.

But with the new clothes, the dominant became black, the ruby earrings disappeared. As if a change takes place in Ferid, something of him comes to the surface and he becomes more and more himself on the way to free himself from the past that has hunted him for so long. As if, now, Ferid becomes the leader of his own destiny and way of being from the inside, from where he should be.

I think Ferid has matured more and I expect more from him.

What I can say is, that Ferid's path consists of learning how to be himself, without masks to hide behind, without pasts and fixed destinies hunting him, without the despair of realizing an eternal loneliness.

"Wathing them reminds me how alone I've been my whole life." (chapter 112)

A path without being a pawn in someone else's hands, as he was in his brother's dreams, in Rígr's plan, in the hands of the broken god who created him to reincarnate infinitely for his own plan.

A path of acceptance, freedom and learning to love himself, even if no one has ever done it for him.

It is a path of maturation, of overcoming some tragic constants in his life, but it is motivating that he still wants to find that Meaning, Truth, to stop the cycle of reincarnation.

Ferid seeks self-liberation.

And I look forward to his further development, with great confidence in the author.

Because Ferid was so well thought out as the character. Absolutely every behavior of his as a vampire, his clothes, his mansions, every detail is a result of the childhood that formed him, of the past that marked him, how he is a product of the environment, of the world, like each of us, and how Ferid fights precisely with the rotten origin that created him, which is really motivational.

That is why I find this character so fascinating and well built and I can only thank the author for creating Ferid in this story!

merlin's personality type (mbti)

Post inspired by my own poll, which was in turn sort of inspired by a post calling Gwaine and Merlin "extrovert bisexuals". This baffled me at the time because, to me, Merlin was obviously an introvert. But when I stopped to think about it, it wasn't actually all that obvious.

As I mentioned previously in my own tags, I think you could make a decent argument for either Extrovert Merlin or Introvert Merlin. After some flip-flopping, I think I've gone back to my original position (for now). Introvert Merlin still feels right.

Why, you didn't ask?

Below I ramble about MBTI types despite actually knowing very little about the whole system. Read at your own risk.

(I want to clarify that I don't think there's anything scientific about MBTI classification. I like to think about it in the same way I would try to sort a character into a Hogwarts house. It's just fun.)

Since it was proving tricky to pinpoint Merlin's position on the Introversion/Extraversion spectrum, I decided to first narrow it down to a few MBTI types that might suit his character.

The 16 MBTI personalities can be divided into four “macro-categories” (known as “temperaments”):

Guardians

Artisans

Rationals

Idealists

To me Merlin obviously belongs in the "Idealists" group, which would make "NF" the "core" of his type (xNFx). This leaves us with two orientations still to be defined: "Extroversion vs Introversion" and "Judging vs Perceiving".

(The 4 MBTI dimensions)

Potentially, Merlin could be an:

INFP – The Mediator

ENFP – The Campaigner

INFJ – The Advocate

ENFJ – The Protagonist

Judging vs Perceiving

One thing I find interesting about Merlin is his decision-making process.

There are some momentous decisions that Merlin spends a considerable time agonising over – for example, whether to kill Morgana or, later on, Mordred – but once he's made a choice, he tends to actually be quite inflexible about it.

Seriously, good luck stopping the little guy once he's decided that something Must Be Done.

“Don't try and stop me, because...you can't.” (The Wicked Day, 4x03)

(That's right, Gaius. Fucking deal with it.)

Merlin will BULLDOZE his way to his goal regardless of anyone's opinion, sometimes even in the face of actual evidence suggesting this might actually be a Bad Idea™.

There is one significant occasion in which Merlin backtracks after having made a huge choice, and it's when he resolves to save Morgana's life after an accident he involuntarily caused (her fall down some stairs) left her deadly injured.

I'll come back to the reasons behind Merlin's change of mind later. What's interesting to notice is that, even in this case, once Merlin’s made his decision he sticks to it quite stubbornly.

He has to ask Kilgharrah for help to heal Morgana and his exchange with him, in case you don’t remember, goes something like this:

Kilgharrah: Merlin don't this is a terrible idea

Merlin: JUST FUCKING DO IT

This stubbornness – or better yet, inflexibility – makes me lean towards Judging rather than Perceiving as Merlin's preferred mental function.

While it's true that Merlin sometimes defers making a decision until it's no longer possible (see: freeing Kilgharrah), which is superficially similar to the way Perceivers prefer to keep their options open for as long as they can, Merlin doesn’t do it to see if new information might come up and help him make a better choice. He only needs time to internally evaluate the decision and consider how it aligns with his moral values.

Once a choice is made, Merlin can act very impulsively – as I've joked about here – and is very reluctant to deviate from the plan, which is typical of "Judger" types.

I also think this becomes especially apparent during the whole Mordred situation. Merlin never really pauses to take Mordred's actual actions into account when deciding whether or not he poses a threat to Arthur – despite Gaius trying to at least make him consider that Mordred might not mean the king any harm. Once Merlin decides that Morden is dangerous and needs to go, there's no turning back (not until it's too late).

Extroversion vs Introversion

(A typical introvert, according to most people.)

Merlin tends to make decisions based on his own values and feelings first. Yes, he will consult others in moments of doubt – like Gaius or Kilgharrah – but his first instinct and tendency is to do what feels right to him even when it's not the wisest or most logical course of action based on the facts at his disposal.

(Incidentally, I find this interesting when compared to Arthur, who – in my opinion – turns to others for counsel far more readily [Merlin, Gwen, Agravaine] and gives more weight to the advice he receives. Arthur’s actually more open and flexible than Merlin when presented with evidence that contradicts his worldview – see his attitude to magic at different points in the show, perhaps most notably in episode 5x05, when he decides to return to the Disir.)

Merlin's decision-making progress is very much inward focused, which makes me think of an Introvert rather than an Extrovert.

I'm thinking of Introvert vs Extrovert (or Extravert) in a Jungian sense here, which is to say, not (just) how someone interacts with others and how social interaction might drain or energise them – quite a subjective metric* – but rather whether they have a tendency to turn inwards or outwards to process information and react to external stimuli.

Or, in Jung's own words, whether someone is "more influenced by environmental influences or more influenced by subjective factors".

An introverted consciousness can be well aware of external conditions, but is not motivated by them. The extreme introvert responds primarily to internal impressions. (x)

In this specific sense, I think Merlin acts more as an Introvert than an Extrovert, which would make his MBTI personality type “INFJ”.

INFJ – The Advocate

INFJs are also known as Advocates, Protectors or (rather aptly, in Merlin's case) Counsellors.

I won’t go into a description of this personality type here – like I said I’m no expert, and you can Google it just as easily as I can.

I’ll just highlight a few INFJ traits that I think are very relevant to Merlin.

Once they have formed an intuition about something, INFJs tend to stick to it very tightly, often to the point of being single-minded in their focus. INFJs are sometimes viewed as stubborn and unyielding. (x)

Because the INFJ has such strong intuitive capabilities, they trust their own instincts above all else. This may result in an INFJ's stubbornness and tendency to ignore other people's opinions. (x)

Something typical of INFJs is also having strong "hunches" (what Arthur would call "a funny feeling"). They are very much a "mystic" or "visionary" type.

INFJs have uncanny insight into people and situations. They get "feelings" about things and intuitively understand them. (x)

Of course, much of Merlin’s intuition is based on magic, but that isn't always the case.

When Gwen Comes Back Wrong™ from the Dark Tower, Merlin can sense she isn't quite the same. When Gaius asks him to elaborate, however, he is unable to articulate exactly why he feels that way, because there is nothing obviously different about Gwen.

MERLIN: Have you noticed anything about Gwen of late? GAIUS: Nothing unusual. Why? MERLIN: I'm not sure exactly. GAIUS: Something she’s said? Something she's done? MERLIN: No. It's nothing in particular. (A Lesson in Vengeance, 5x07)

I'd like to point out that 1. Merlin looks especially hot in this scene, 2. his "funny feeling" has nothing to do with magic here. In fact, it takes him stalking Gwen and digging for evidence to discover that she is conspiring with Morgana.

Advocates tend to carry around a sense – whether conscious or not – of being different from most people. With their rich inner lives and their deep, abiding desire to find their life purpose, they don’t always fit in with those around them. (...) Many Advocates feel that their life has a unique purpose – a mission that they were put onto this earth to fulfill. For people with this personality type, one of the most rewarding aspects of life is seeking out this purpose – and then, once they’ve found it, striving to do it justice. (x)

Merlin's search for purpose is one of his main drivers (if not the main one). He almost immediately asks Gaius if he knows why he was born with magic and is quite heartbroken when Gaius can't offer a satisfying answer. After Kilgharrah tells him about the prophecy that concerns him and Arthur, Merlin throws himself into his destiny wholeheartedly, readily adopting it as his life's purpose.

Another INFJ characteristic which I think fits Merlin’s character quite well is that INFJs are harmony-seekers and deeply concerned about others’ feelings.

We see it at times in Merlin’s interactions with Gaius – although the two of them have their disagreements, and Merlin can be quite vocal about his opinion, Merlin's first instinct is usually to keep secret anything that might upset or worry Gaius too much.

For example, when Gaius earnestly pleads with Merlin not to meet with Finna (The Kindness of Strangers, episode 5x10), Merlin gives an evasive answer rather than confronting him, despite having already made his decision.

Being at odds with Gaius is truly distressing to Merlin – as shown in episode 3x09 (Love in the Time of Dragons), where Merlin's dejection after an argument with Gaius is evident enough for Arthur to notice and try to offer his advice.

Although INFJs rely primarily on Introverted Intuition (their dominant function) this is supported by Extroverted Feeling, their auxiliary function.

Extraverted Feeling is the secondary function in INFJs. Deeply concerned with the energy, moods, and feelings of others, INFJs have deep insights into people and situations and make decisions based on how they will affect people. (x)

In stressful situations, an INFJ might try to rely on emotions when making decisions, especially if it means pleasing other people. (x)

I think the best example of the above trait is Merlin deciding to save Morgana’s life in episode 3x05 (The Crystal Cave) after his initial decision to let her die. He does not do this because of any new evidence or information – he still has every reason to believe Morgana poses a threat to the king and kingdom, if not immediately at least in the near future – but because he's witnessed how her imminent death is affecting those he cares about (in this case, Arthur and Gwen).

It could be argued that Merlin’s choice not to reveal his secret to Arthur is also partly motivated by his Extraverted Feeling tendencies rather than just self-preservation.

"I didn't want to put you in that position" – he tells Arthur – again, showing a keen awareness of other people's feelings and a desire to maintain social harmony.

What’re your characters’ mbti type?

You asked me such a simple question, Anon, but I've been struggling with it for hours lol MBTI lacks nuance, so I constantly thought that "my boy has much more personality than that! This description barely suits him!" Not to mention that people's choices for grouping characters that, in their opinion, belong to those types are so weird and questionable… But enough of my whining about that.

Edmund was easy enough - he's INTJ, without any doubts. He might sliiightly remind of INTP, maybe.

Ned is ISTJ. He was also easy to figure out, and the description fits him nicely.

Then my struggles started. Niall is someone like ESFP?.. He's definitely extroverted, observant, thinking and prospecting, but the description for the Entertainer sounds so off 😭 Although not the worst one and gets some of the aspects right.

Liam, in his typical fashion, is a fucking enigma and a pain in the ass because he doesn't follow any rules orz not even mine. I can describe him as introverted, observant, and that's when I lost him. Feeling? Yeah, that's what he'd like you to think. Or more so that's what you'd think without knowing him well. And then judging… I guess. So, the answer would've been ISFJ, but it's just awful and doesn't suit him at all. I'm so sorry 🥲

However, I can describe his type with a bunch of other characters. Maybe you're familiar with some of them, so it'll help you to understand him better. Just imagine them united by the same mbti-type: Nagito Komaeda (Danganronpa), Fuji Shusuke (Prince of Tennis), Tohma Seguchi (Gravitation), Jade Leech (Twisted Wonderland), Russia (Hetalia), maybe Vincent from Silent Hill 3? Idk.

Can't remember anyone else so far, sorry!

The funny thing is, I actually had their types in mind when coming up with characters - that being said, it was for the classification we have in Russia, socionics - it's a pseudoscience which has the same concept in its base. I like it much more in this case, and have 0 problems with putting my boys into neat little groups from there. They don't really correspond to MBTI types, despite the article probably stating otherwise (I haven't read it).

A guide to TWS.

TWS is a multinational group of six members under the management of Pledis Entertainment, who made their debut on 22nd January 2024. The members consist of Shinyu, Dohoon, Youngjae, Hanjin, Jihoon, and Kyungmin, ordered from eldest to youngest. Interestingly, the group name TWS stands for "TWENTY FOR SEVEN WITH US".

Their debut mini-album, named Sparkling Blue, showcases the excitement and tension of the beginning of a new semester, where everything starts afresh. The songs in the album feature lyrics about everyday topics and a refreshing concept that can be relatable to the younger generations. Moreover, TWS can also be pronounced as Two Us.

On the 10th November 2022, the sub-label of HYBE, Pledis Entertainment, announced the debut of a new boy group around the year 2023. It was during the Fan Meeting of SEVENTEEN in Carat Land on 12th March 2023 when Hoshi from SEVENTEEN introduced five trainees as the upcoming members of the label's new group. However, their identities remained a mystery. Pledis officially confirmed on 7th November that the group would make their debut in the first quarter of 2024.

On the 21st December 2023, the group launched their official social media account and released their first debut teaser. The following day, Pledis Entertainment announced that the group would consist of six members and would debut on January 2024.

On 27th December 2023, it was announced that the group would release their debut mini-album, Sparkling Blue, on 22nd January. The pre-release single, titled "Oh Mymy: 7s", was released on 2nd January.

The six members were introduced through a group profile video released on 3rd January and individual videos, which followed the next day, on 4th January.

Brief profile of members (from oldest to youngest)

1. Shinyu

Shinyu, whose birth name is Shin Junghwan, is the oldest member and leader of TWS. He was born on 7th November 2003 and claims to be "the father" of the group. Shinyu graduated from Lila Art High School in 2023, a year late due to being a dropout from Yesan High School previously. He has two elder siblings, born in 1997 and 2002, respectively. Shinyu has an INFP personality type based on MBTI classification and represents the visual of the group. He has a mature, trendy, and flower boy appearance with a small face and broad shoulders.

Before joining Pledis Entertainment, Shinyu was a former trainee at both SM Entertainment and Big Hit Music. He began training since his freshman year of high school. Shinyu is known to be friends with actress Lee Chaeyoon, who once participated in Girls Planet 999. They even shot a school activity video together at Lila Art High School. Shinyu has a calm and mature personality, but he also has some randomness that allows him to adapt well to other members.

2. Dohoon

Dohoon, whose birth name is Kim Dohoon, is a member of TWS, born on 30th January 2005. He has an elder brother and completed his schooling at Lila Art High School before transferring to Hanlim Multi Art High School. Dohoon began his trainee journey in 2017 and is the longest trainee among the TWS members, making him a versatile member.

Based on the MBTI personality test, Dohoon's personality type is ISTP. His face is often compared to Nam Joohyuk and EVNNE's Lee Jeonghyeon, and he is known for representing the "strong and fierce" visual in the group. Together with Shinyu, Dohoon is responsible for the rap line in TWS.

During dance performances, Dohoon's movements are clean, precise, and he knows how to control his power and weakness. He is often chosen as the center during the highlights of the song. Additionally, his vocal ability is exceptional, with a wide range and good pitch. Dohoon tends to sing high-pitched tones with a soft voice, and he also features in rap parts.

Despite the group's challenging pre-debut period, Dohoon is known for not crying when all members remain teary-eyed two days before their debut. He was also very popular among his seniors and juniors during his middle school years. Dohoon is a talkative and random member who adds life to the group's chemistry.

3. Youngjae

Youngjae, whose birth name is Choi Youngjae, was born on 31st May 2005 and is a member of TWS. He has a younger sister and completed his schooling at Jamshin High School. Based on the MBTI personality test, Youngjae's personality type is ISFJ. Compared to the other members, Youngjae is relatively calm, but alongside Shinyu, he often speaks more.

Youngjae's position in the group is as the main vocalist. He has the loudest voice among the members that is clear and gentle, optimized for band vocals. He is particularly responsible for delivering high notes and the song's highlight parts. During his dance performances, Youngjae showcases flexible dance lines with big and proportional body movements.

Youngjae's soft and gentle look comes from his double eyelids, round eyes, and slim face. According to his fellow members, he has an organized personality with strong vitality. Additionally, he was discovered by Pledis Entertainment through Instagram DM. He occasionally uses a Gyeongnam accent while speaking.

4. Hanjin

Hanjin, whose birth name is Han Zhen, is a member of TWS. He was born on 5th January 2006 and is originally from Xinxiang, Henan, China. Hanjin completed his schooling at Hanlim Multi Art High School and has the personality type of INFJ based on the MBTI classification.

Hanjin is the only foreign member of the group, who joined Pledis Entertainment through an audition in China in 2022. He worked as a trainee for approximately a year before debuting. Hanjin's position in the group is as the sub-vocal due to his lacking Korean. However, in the b-side song "Unplugged Boy", Hanjin showcased his stable and warm vocal.

Hanjin's dance skills are excellent even though his training period was relatively short. He is also the visual member, who is a handsome Chinese man with large, beautiful eyes, dark double eyelids, and a sharp nose. His small face is filled with attractive features that exude luxury.

Despite Hanjin's limited language skills in Korean, he is actually a talkative and noisy member. His favorite season is autumn because it is not too hot or too cold. Furthermore, Hanjin is an active user of selca and loves photography.

5. Jihoon

Jihoon, whose birth name is Han Jihoon, is a member of TWS. He was born on 28th March 2006 and has an elder sister born in 2002. Jihoon is skilled in guitar playing and dancing, and he is also INFJ based on the MBTI personality test. He attended Hanlim Multi Art High School.

Jihoon became a trainee in the entertainment industry after attending Move Dance Studio in Suwon. He began his training at YG Entertainment in 2017 and subsequently moved to JYP Entertainment. He then joined Big Hit Music (later known as Big Hit Entertainment) in 2020. Jihoon was part of Trainee A and was set to debut next, but the group was canceled. He finally joined Pledis Entertainment in 2023 as a trainee for about seven years before his debut.

Jihoon's position in the group is the main dancer. He is passionate about dancing and has a precise and controlled movement. He has excellent choreography memorization and can create choreography as well. Jihoon likes hip-hop music, and his clear and transparent tone showcased remarkable vocal ability with a comfortable listening experience. He has plump lips, lovely skin, and cheeks that are soft, portraying a cute image when he smiles with a round-opened mouth, revealing his gumline.

Jihoon is an excellent dancer, but he is said to practice too much that resulted in his knee joint inflammation. Monica, who appeared in Street Woman Fighter, is his dance mentor. He attended a dance school called OFD dance studio ran by Monica.

Jihoon is fluent in three languages, Korean, Japanese, and English. He is reportedly more popular than other members, just like Shinyu and Dohoon, but with a wider range of recognition due to his exposure as Trainee A. Jihoon and Kyungmin are known as the loudest and most talkative members of the group.

6. Kyungmin

Kyungmin, whose birth name is Lee Kyungmin, is the youngest member of TWS, born on 2nd October 2007. He is the only member with two younger brothers and attended Hanlim Multi Art High School. Based on the MBTI personality test, Kyungmin's personality type is ISFP.

Kyungmin received training from Mu Doctor Academy, an audition academy, before passing an in-house audition held by Pledis Entertainment and joining the label. He is the main vocalist, with no remarkable contrast between his natural voice and singing voice. Kyungmin's voice is refreshing but somewhat childlike, with a beautiful and unique tone that captivates the ears, particularly at higher notes.

Kyungmin's dance technique is clear and loud. His slightly droopy eyes and plump lips give him a cute look, often compared to a puppy, especially when he smiles with a raised mouth corner and a dimple that appears, making those who look at him smile along.

Kyungmin and Jihoon are known as the loudest and most playful members of the group. He is known for his outstanding academic achievement and excels in mathematics, ranking sixth in his class. Kyungmin is the first HYBE idol to debut in 2007, but based on the RU Next audition program, Wonhee from I'LL-IT was the first to confirm his debut. However, Kyungmin made his debut earlier than Wonhee.

Hi there! Firstly I want to thank you for your account! is a great approach to MBTI in an ocean of misinformation; I like how the concepts of Jung are portrayed in your posts, because you show his work how it is, but at the same time, there is space to elaborate and develop new ideas. I came here because I'm quite confused with my MBTI type. I've read and discussed the thing for a while, understanding a bit more the cognitive functions and all; but the thing is, even when I can see myself as a certain type, there is a bunch of things that I can't see at all.

I've always liked (and cared) for my aesthetic (I don't mind if it is trending or not tho), leadership is natural in me, my moral compass has been evident since little and it has an important role when I take decisions. My close relationship with arts is one of my prominent characteristics and I think I can't function well without them (painting, crafting, music, writing...). Being on my own, having one-to-one interactions, discussing possibilities and theories without a personal attachment to them (I really enjoy doing that) and being aware of the "vibe" in a room is like breathing to me. I've thought that I'm an ISFJ, but I kinda see Se and Fi in my way of reasoning, so I would appreciate if you could guide me to understand it. That's okay. You are a unique example of your type and you should understand cognitive functions as patterns, and not as a list of traits in which you have to score 10/10 to be that type. Jung said: "Classification does not explain the individual psyche. Nevertheless, an understanding of psychological types opens the way to a better understanding of human psychology in general."

What you say just shows to me a preference for feeling over thinking. I see more Fi than Fe and I see more Ne than Se (I actually don't see Se at all in what you say haha). My take would be INFP, ENFP orrrr xSFJ; even your first paragraph shows poor Si: you are so lost in the details of the parts of a type in which you don't "fit in" that you lose track of the essence and factual proof of that certain type = NeSi > SeNi.

hi-hi, i'm EG (or eggy, whichever) and i was here a few months back with a muse i was really stoked about and had a lot of plans for, but life kind of prevented me from investing as much time into her (and rp, in general lol) as i would've liked! but, fortunately, the new year is basically a free hack for more downtime, so here i am again, with a plate that is significantly less full :3 i have every intention of bringing #her back, but i figured i'd start off easy this time with a veteran idol who can forge more temporal connections and work my way back to a rookie, and then, eventually, a staff member! so, without further ado, this is gong huiseok! extremely-reluctant-morally-ambiguous-nepo-baby and idol-actor. to know him is to.....know him. below the cut is a "brief" rundown of him as a person, pretty soon i'll have some pages linked that are mostly self-indulgent but definitely help paint a more comprehensive picture for his celebrity profile and his history in the industry, as well as his familial background. do-too-much gene, chronic world builder disease, etc. etc. but this should be a good huiseok starter pack while i'm work-week lazy!

huiseok looks just like his father. even if he didn’t already think so himself, more and more as he gets older, he hears it often enough that it must be true. he thinks maybe it’s their way of comforting him, but it’s been years and his dad lives on in his mirror; in the pictures that cover their family home; in the comments that people leave under everything he does, good or bad. he lives. and sometimes, when huiseok has a particularly rough day, when the people around him go out of their way to make him feel like he’s as good as wearing his father’s skin, he kind-of hates him for it and then hates himself for hating him for it. all of the best things that huiseok has wouldn’t even /be/ his, if it weren’t for the industry “in” he’d had by virtue of his parentage. he’s gong hanwook and choi sunhui’s only son, the sole carrier-on of his father’s legacy, and that means something. it means everything, actually. he starts young, a fresh face on a children’s show, a child in the presence of adults who make all the decisions for him. he’s cute and he’s charming, and obedient in the way that all introverted little kids tend to be. he takes direction like a champ and they decide, before the velcros are even off his shoes, that he’ll be a star. he is his father’s son. mercifully, they give him his youth, and it’s of his own volition that he comes back into the industry, first through acting and then, finally, through music. becoming a member of indigo feels like the first thing that he ever really does on his own. with acting, he’s a name and a face, but as a member of a group…okay, he’s still a face, but he has his merit, too; his voice, his dancing, his words. that much feels true. for a while, at least — and, for years, it is. he does “music” and takes on acting roles when time allows to appease the tiny voice in his head that still, always, wants to make his father proud. his father dies in an “accident” in late 2019 during the early unfolding of a scandal. huiseok does not take it well and neither do his father’s fans. he feels suffocated. people are a lot more forgiving than he deserves when he lashes out about it. there’s headlines about him partying, getting belligerently drunk and causing scenes that are only ever documented through hearsay, the year after it happens and people respond with pity. he’s a boy without his father, afterall. he’s 22 and that ship has long sailed, but he lets them think that they understand what things were like between them. it’s complicated and, more than that, none of their business. maybe it’s guilt, a sense of obligation (the persistence of millions of middle-aged women who want to relive their glory days,) or just time that leads huiseok back onto the screen. he couldn’t tell you for sure himself, but his big return to acting following the passing of his father is a major role on a drama. the comments are about what he expects him to be, but he learns to tune out the part of his brain that aches with the comparisons and copes with the money he rakes in from brand deals, more roles, growing publicity, higher demand; the lucrativity of a pretty face - his father’s face. it makes his mother happy. (he is his father’s son.)

his father, Gong Hanwook, is a household name, an actor who rose to fame in the early 90s, first through a popular drama and then eventually for his visuals and multiple roles in deeply culturally impactful movies and media. there was a point in time where he was more or less the equivalent of a brad pitt, a tom cruise or a leonardo dicaprio in hollywood and, to this day, he's always a part of the "great actors of south korea" conversation. his wife, huiseok's mother, Choi Sunhui is a retired supermodel who rose to prominence around the same time as his father with a career more comprable to a devon aoki or a kate moss in terms of iconography. her star has faded some, but she's still someone that young women look up to for visual inspiration and it's fairly often that pictures of her modeling, and even off-duty, in the late 90s early 00s go viral. huiseok was always closer with his mother than he was his father and that really only worsened as he got older, tossed into the spotlight, and people began to compare the two of them visually. his father's passing unearthed a lot of really complicated emotions about this and coming to terms with those emotions has been one of his more complex points of development

he trained for six months, haters speculate that it's because the company was eager to push him after news of him signing with them dropped to capitalize on his name, but fans argue that he was just that talented upon arrival — the truth lies somewhere in the middle.

every now and then, a cover he did of grind on me by pretty ricky when he was like 17 makes its rounds through the fandom. people argue about it being spread because he was a minor and the subject matter is objectively super suggestive but others say it's funny, so it's something people fight about for forty days and forty nights whenever a new gongdoongie unearths the clip again lol

despite his focus these days being on his acting and honoring his father's legacy (and self-promo tbr...), he posts cover (dance and vocal) videos to the group's official youtube channel every now and then. he's also, in the last year or so, opened up a youtube channel of his own, but it's heavily curated and a lot more focused in Gong Huiseok the brand and legacy than it is on gong huiseok, the guy

huiseok went out on a limb during their relationship and said the quiet part out loud, while muse, either unprepared for the seriousness of a love confession, hung up on another lover or not ready to say it at all, left him hanging. it’s not easy to be the first one to say the l-bomb, and after taking a chance on their relationship, only for muse not to say it back, huiseok ended things, ego bruised, but head held high. years on, wounds healed and seeing each other being an inevitability considering how small their world is, huiseok is willing to pursue a friendship. forreal this time. it’s just that… old habits are so hard to break, aren’t they?

in their rookie days, reckless and, quite frankly, cynical, huiseok and this muse went out on the town and made quite an event of things. so much of an event that pictures leaked onto forums and started quite the conversation. the only problem is that, in all of the commotion, muse wound up being the only one to take the heat. things were never quite the same after that. it’s been ages and huiseok wishes they could just move on, but that’s really easy for him to say.

something about this muse breathes life into huiseok's drearier days, they’re a breath of fresh air at the end of a particularly rough work schedule, and a warm reprieve from the coldness of the industry. it’s impractical to see each other all the time, but huiseok makes it a point to see them as often as possible. with no siblings and his mother constantly on the go, it feels nice to have someone that feels as good as blood in his corner and he hopes that, in some way, he makes them feel that way, too.

huiseok and this muse have been hooking up pretty regularly, both content to keep things mainly transactional while they blow off steam but the more time they spend together, the more they find they have in common. and what’s worse, they’ve started working together now, too.

huiseok and this muse are industry rivals, filling a close enough niche in the market that it causes constant comparisons between the two of them. fortunately, (or unfortunately, depending on who you ask,) the rivalry translates into a beef that’s withstood both the test of time and petty match-ups during variety show specials. they pretend to get along to keep things from flying into a media shitstorm, but if they were anything but celebrities, it would probably be on-sight.

huiseok overheard a conversation in the waiting room of a music show that put a bad taste in his mouth. now, he looks at this muse with something half-way between disdain and confusion. for muse’s part, they don’t have the slightest clue what could have caused this animosity and have taken to believing that the rumors of huiseok being cold and difficult to approach behind the scenes are true. on both ends, this is all a terrible misunderstanding, but it’s hard to clear up when neither of them has a clue in the world what the other’s problem even is.

someone who initially hated huiseok for being the kid who got put into the lineup through connections, not merit, but has come to understand him a lot better due to their forced proximity over the years - he’s still kind of a brat who got into the group with an unfair advantage, but he’s more than proved himself a capable and valuable member of the team (more than likely an indigo member but i’m open to exploring other idols having some initial wariness about his relatively easier path to debut)

someone who saw huiseok through his spiral in 2019 following his father’s passing; they offered him a reliable shoulder to cry on, someone to come to when everything felt like too much, a genuine friendship, and usually cleaned him up after his benders. huiseok loves and respects this person, and has spent the years since paying all of their love back

they’ve done a special stage together (award show, music show, any of the gayos)

they’ve appeared on variety shows together

they’ve bonded over often staying late in the company building

they initially only knew of each other but grew surprisingly close over the course of the tour
