"Ominis, really," Sebastian groans.

Ominis turns to him, confused. It had been fairly quiet in the common room until now. He can hear Sebastian stomping over and laughs to himself. "What have I done?" He feels something land in his lap as Sebastian sits on the couch next to him.

"This was tossed in my food this morning."

Ominis furrows his brows, picking the item up. An envelope? "Is it not yours, then, Sebastian?" he asks, genuinely confused.

Sebastian shakes his head, scoffing. "I only ever get mail from Anne. Besides, your name is on it. I'd prefer to not eat your mail, Ominis." He leans in close, smirking. "Another love letter?"

Ominis feels his face burn a bit and shifts away, opening the letter.

My Darling Ominis,

I couldn't wait to send you another letter. I cannot stop thinking about you.

I try to hold my thoughts back but my feelings flow through me like a flood.

I imagine what you must be like away from the eyes of the world. What is it like

to lay with you? Are you warm? Would you hold me gently? How comforting it

must be to fall asleep to the sound of your heartbeat. The slowness of your breathing.

I wonder how soft your lips are and how delicate a kiss it could be. I think of how

your eyes look in the light of the fire. How it makes them glow just a little bit

brighter. I adore the way you smile at me and I wish you knew just how beautiful

you are.

Ominis keeps his fingers over the paper when he finishes reading. His face is bright red and Sebastian is laughing.

"Was it a spicy one, Ominis?" he jokes, nudging him.

Ominis swallows hard, shifting and quickly folding the letter up and sliding it into his pocket. "My business, isn't it?" he hums, standing. "I need to go."

He walks away quickly, leaving Sebastian confused on the couch. He walks around aimlessly, thinking about the letters. Merlin's beard... His face felt hot and he paced around Central Hall, unsure what to do. He can't send a letter back. He has no clue who they are. He hears footsteps approach and stops, turning his head up, blush fading.

"(Y/N)?" he calls.

You laughs and walk up. "How do you always know it's me?" He smiles and you blush, thanking Merlin he can't see.

"I've memorized how you sound when you walk. It's very specific."

You tilt your head, hands on your hips. "Is that a good thing?"

He turns a deep shade of red again and puts his hands up in defense. "Yes! I certainly didn't mean it in a negative way... I like knowing it's you."

You laugh and nudge him. He makes a shocked noise and pulls the letter out of his pocket.

"I got another one..."

You gasp and take it opening it up. You forgot. He doesn't know you can read it. You're silent for a moment.

"I can't read this..."

He laughs and takes it back. "It's...umm...it describes me a bit in depth..."

Is that good? No, bad? Was he uncomfortable? You fold your arms, looking down at the paper.

"How so?" you ask, hoping for insight on how he feels.

He feels his face burn and rubs the back of his neck. "Well..." he takes a breath. "Not here. I'm worried Sebastian followed me and he'll never let me live this one down."

You laugh and agree, following him to the Faculty Tower, standing below the stairwell. He tells you about the contents of the letter, stuttering a bit as he does so. He doesn't seem upset, but he's a bit hard to read sometimes. After he finishes reading it, he turns his head to you.

"What do you think?" he asks, hesitantly.

"I think she's in love with you," you reply, shrugging.

He's silent for a moment. "Well...how do you know it's a she?"

You stare at him and laugh. "Well this just seems like something a girl would write to the boy she loves."

He holds tightly onto the papers. "I wish I knew who it was..."

You smile and lean against the wall. "Well if it's escalating like that, you must be on track to find out."

He sighs and shakes his head. "I do hope it's someone specific."

You grin and lean in. "You like someone?"

He widens his eyes and steps back. "I...uh...I have to leave, I'm sorry." He shoves the letters in his pockets and you frown, watching him leave. If he loves someone else you have no chance...

❤: Which character do you think is the most egregiously mischaracterized by the fandom?

Louis <3 I think this is an affect of how likable and overtly sympathetic he is in the amc show but I've seen people getting genuinely offended over Louis being described in fandom (and by Anne rice herself) as a manipulative cold hearted ass who uses his perceived vulnerability and gentleness to distract from the fact that he is just as cruel if not crueler then the other vampires. Like Louis does nottt have strong morals or high empathy lmao. Book Louis weaponizes his privilege like a white woman crying to self victimize into making the other vampires look worse them him 😭 . He refuses to kill humans for a while not bcus it hurts him to take life (he actually takes more pleasure in it then most), he refuses bcus he has catholic brain the way a christians who say "how do atheists have morals without god?" do, misunderstanding that most people actually care about other people and dont need an existential threat to encourage them not to hurt others.

His moral compass is self centered and based in up keeping the appearance of self restraint and monk style lack of enjoying himself, not empathy. If a vampire killed u would u feel better if u knew he cried over how much he got off on it then flaunted his suffering over how little he indulged so that everyone knew how piosis he was 😭.

He is way worse when it comes to how he treats his victims then Armand who intentionally seeks out victims who r asking to die or Lestat who tries the vigilante approach. Louis kills innocents and he thinks it makes him better cuz he only does it sometimes and he feels really really bad about himself afterwards. As akasha said (paraphrased) he's the most predatory of them all.

To specify I love book Louis SOOOO much I love how shitty he is that's why it makes me sad when people mischaracterize him as sincere and get gen mad when ppl characterize him how he is in canon (a lying selfish bitch bless his heart). Like ik amc Louis at this point in canon is unambiguously in the right but he isn't like an accurate reflection of how he is in the books 😭 it's not like amc did what anne rice was trying to do more successfully, they just nulled what anne rice was doing in favor of a more likable protagonist. Which is fine, but like, there's no crime in preferring evil to the core horrible asshole Louis of the books.

💚: What does everyone else get wrong about your favorite character?

I think the common fandom perception of Armand as the crazy unhinged "omg I can't believe he actually did that in the books??" sadistic maniac villain guy is funny but not really accurate. Armand explicitly not only tries to avoid violence but dislikes it and finds it hard to comprehend why someone would seek out violence and conflict.

The reason he is always doing fucked up shit isn't out of a lestat-esc desire to cause chaos, it's bcus his highly strung ptsd brain has him convinced that the world is a battle ground and he must always be defending himself and acting out in violence.

Since acting out in violence is a reaction hes been taught throughout his life to be standard and necessary, as violence is something so normalized to him he considers it more of a tedious chore then a last resort measure, he usually reacts to conflict in ways that are objectively extreme to anyone who isn't thinking from his perspective. In qotd he even asks Daniel why men choose to fight in wars, explaining that he doesn't understand the draw of violence (bcus he's not a man) and he can't comprehend the supposed thrill of it.

i was going to say Marius but I figure that's too obvious since everyone at this point knows I don't like Marius 😭 so here's an even hotter take,,,,, Lestat ‼️

Only to a degree, I think Lestat is hot and deserves the hype, but i also think he's hot in a different way then a chunk of the fandom does. Based on his book description he's kind of wonky looking, mouth too big for his face, vaguely unnerving shallow pale skin, starved 1700s peasant build but also kind of buff in the unhealthy "i dont eat regularly but I'm strong enough to carry a wolf for miles on my back" sense, weirdly small fucking feet. He def has creepy ass florescent blue doll eyes too. my point is I think when drooling over Lestat the fandom tends to forget this wonkiness in favor of blonde bombshell, Sam Reid chizzled jawline and abs, or conventionally beautiful anime twink, when they should be appreciating lestat in all his weird as shit glory.

Let me pipe up from the minority and say I don’t think the honor was intended as any kind of “commoner” insult toward Catherine. I think there is real affection there on Charles’ part, and hers. And Camilla is technically a commoner. Definitely upper class, but not titled in any way, IIRC. Charles cares not one whit.

Real affection you said lmao, how blind one should be to claim this. The titles is too meaningless for royals, chuck gave it to catherine! This is literally mocking.

If the honor means so much he should have given it to his sister. The hardest working Royal. But he can't, because Anne would see it exactly for what it is.

Hey there! I absolutely love your headcanons and theories and your thoughts about the HL boys, especially Ominis. You mentioned that most of the other students are afraid and wary of Ominis due to him being a Gaunt. But what about the people who wants to befriend him but are also too afraid to say anything? Do you think he has secret admirers? What about him, do you think he has a crush on someone?

Also, since he's clearly in a family culture of arranged marriages (inbreeding and marrying close cousins), do you think he thinks of his own marriage in the future, or not? Thanks so much!

Oh man I bet there are plenty of people who would love to befriend Ominis! There are random NPCs who show some interest in befriending him and even say he’s nice. I imagine many of them don’t approach him because they don’t know how or are afraid that they’ll be the subject of rumors about associating with dark wizards.

Because I am a chronic shipper, I think there are plenty of possibilities for who he might be crushing on. MC is always a favorite, since they show absolutely no fear/judgement when meeting him. Sebastian is another I could definitely see, just because they’re so close. It would be so so adorable if Ominis had a crush on Sebastian. And a less common one is definitely Anne. We don’t really see them interact too much so it’s hard to say what their chemistry is even like, but there is always the possibility—especially since Anne mentions enjoying teasing first years about mermaids too. Ominis x Poppy is very cute, I have to admit. They’d absolutely get along really well. It’s probably quite obvious that Ominis x MC is my first choice, but I certainly don’t dislike the other ships out there. They’re all adorable in their own ways. :) As for who might have a crush on him, I’d say probably just MC, Sebastian or Anne and mayyyyybe Poppy based on her line in that video I linked.

I imagine he tries not to think of his future while he’s at Hogwarts and prefers to enjoy the time he can spend away from his family, but I always HC that it never leaves the back of his mind and probably keeps him up some nights when he’s especially lonely or upset. It sometimes creeps into my fics and I really like exploring it. Having someone willing to cuddle up with him when he’s having a hard time with worrying about his future would definitely help ease his mind. Being unable to fall asleep, then rolling over to feel his significant other sleeping next to him and pulling them close is such a cute image. Bonus points if he asks if they’re awake, they wake up all sleepy and disoriented and they talk him to sleep by whispering sweet nothings to him and reminding him of the plans for the future they’ve talked about. I think about that so often lol.

Honestly between the inevitability of him ending up in a loveless marriage and the fact that he’s not on the records in the 1920s, I’m very motivated to ship him with someone who will marry him and allow him to escape that life. Like, I kinda die a little on the inside thinking about any other future for him lmao. He deserves so much more love than he gets at face value in the game and it will forever haunt me 😭

Here's a bit more about the Persona 5 Mech au, where everyone is and what they're up to

Alright let's go

Here's some world stuff again to start

Schooling goes like, elementary for young kids, until they're about 15. After that it's either Pilot school or high school, though since pilot school only takes new applicants every 3 years, some starting pilots are as young as 12

Body augmentations are common. For non pilots, "replacements" are things you can buy to improve your life, originally created as an option for disabled people. For pilots, there is never a choice. When they sign up for pilot school, they sign a waiver that allows the government automatic consent to replace any part of them to keep them alive

Pilots dont pay for their food, lodgings, or Replacements. Medical too. They pay with their service, since the mortality rate is over 80%. They get a small weekly allowance for amusement spending, and any other money comes from their families

When they retire, there are two payment options. If they work outside the government structure or swear off working with them, they receive just enough to live in their chosen area. Otherwise, they're employed by the government for as long as they are able, and have access to standard amenities with decent pay

Joker (I use the name Akira for him but I usually just say Joker)

So, he's not human. A test tube baby too! He's a mix of human DNA and DNA taken from the monsters they've managed to kill. The "spirit" of the monster he shares DNA with was placed into the mech he tends to pilot most, Arsene

When Wakaba and her team created Joker, they used the most human parts for him. The excess was used to create unit M0N-A, aka Morgana. He acts as a companion for the pilots, and is the mascot for Pilot team 3

Joker was raised by a mix of head researcher Wakaba, and security officers Sojiro and Zenkichi (in the words of Cap, Old Man Yaoi). He was raised as Futaba's older half-brother, and is unaware that he is not human

Goro

An orphan, he joined the Pilot academy to make something of his life, to prove that he was worth keeping. One day he hopes to face his father and show him what he missed out on

He didn't have good sync scores with any pilots in his grad year, his closest to passing mark being a 61.23 with Makoto's former partner Eiko. However, he and Joker broke the national sync record by hitting a 95.89 on their first attempt, making them partners

He did nearly die around that time. In order to save him they used Joker's blood for a transfusion, and now Akechi's body is, doing strange things

He shares a quad dorm with fellow class 192 graduates Makoto and Haru, and class 193 graduate Hifumi. He gets along very well with Security officer Zenkichi, and is fond of having debates with head office staff Sae Niijima

He joined the Pilot academy after his orphanage was visited by a few members of Team 2 (the Persona 4 crew). He really looks up to pilot Naoto Shirogane

Ann

Her parents were against her becoming a pilot. They wanted her to inherit their business, which makes the sync suits the pilots wear. However, she felt a rush when she tried one on for the first time, and she doesn't let anyone stop her from reaching her dreams

She and Ryuji were sync partners in the academy, best friends from kindergarten too. Shiho joined their group in elementary school, and all three joined the academy together. Shiho's sync scores with both of them were just below theirs, and their teachers joked that they'd be the perfect team for a three pilot mech

Ann and Shiho fell hard for each other, and started dating at the academy. They planned to try to pilot at the same base after, maybe even actually become a true trio with Ryuji- so they could be together forever

But of course, the final exam is known for cutting pilot numbers down fast. By killing most and injuring the rest, leaving only the bravest to continue forward. Ann and Ryuji passed, though their training mech went up in flames. Ann had to have her left arm replaced, only up to the elbow.

However, Shiho was less lucky. Barely passing, she lost both legs below the knees. She decided to retire immediately, but vowed to stay by Ann's side even if she continued as a pilot.

And continue she did. Chosen for the elite Team 3, Ann got to stay in Central Base City, and married Shiho as soon as they were able to. She shares a room quad with Ryuji, Yusuke, and Joker

Her ultimate dream? To retire and live peacefully with Shiho, working on making better and better sync suits

Ryuji

Being a mech pilot was always his dream. His dad had been a deadbeat, and tried to hurt him and his mom. A pilot trainee had noticed and swept in and saved them, and ever since it was the only thing Ryuji wanted to do

He grew up besties with Ann, and eventually Shiho. He never minded third wheeling them, they never made him feel left out. His marks were always just barely good enough to pass, but his physical test results were always top of the class

During his final exam, his and Ann's mech caught fire. He lost his right leg, up to his hip. The replacement works well enough, but he always walks with a slight limp. Neither Researcher Wakaba nor Medic Tae Takemi know why, nothing shows up on his tests

He is the pilot that gets along the least with M0N-A, and goes off base once a month to stay with his mom for a week

Yusuke

He was the first student pilot to use a solo mech on the exam and pass. He also came out of the exam whole, since his Replacement eye came from a sneezing incident while he was sketching his precious mech

Yusuke's mom used to work at the Northern Reach base, which is where the infamous Pilot Team 1 was stationed. His art teacher was a corrupt man and tricked his ill mother out of money with the false promise of a new-gen Replacement for her liver

Orphaned once she died, Yusuke nearly killed Madarame in his rage, but two Team one members, Makoto Yuki and Kotone Shiomi, stopped him in time and took him in for a spell

He believes he owes the pilot program for his survival, and joined the academy the first chance he got. He was temporarily sync partners with Hifumi, but they could only reach a 65.20 sync rate. As such both were pushed into the test group for solo mech's due to their otherwise high test scores

Yusuke rarely pilots a dual mech because of this, but he has the most success with Joker (who is genetically designed to achieve high scores) and Haru. The highest sync score he's ever achieved was a 73.95, with Joker

He also is the one who sews on the patches to everyone's bomber jackets. Oh, cause they each have a Team 3 bomber jacket in their mech's colours. Yusuke made team 3 patches, as well as any other patches his teammates wished for and sewed them by hand

Makoto

A second generation pilot! Her father and mother had met through the pilot program, him as a pilot and her as a researcher, and they had Sae as, an accident. They were both young, maybe too young. It did keep him out of combat for a few years though

When their first daughter was about, 12-15, you know, pilot age, they found out they were having a second child. Sae didn't want to be a pilot, but she wasn't pushed that hard because well, her father was going to have a second chance for a legacy now

However, the mother didn't make it. Makoto was born during the first monster attack on Central Base City, and the complications with the birth meant only daughter survived. It was devasting for her father, but he sat in the loud, flashing hospital hallway with his baby daughter, his oldest tucked into his side and shivering, and promised to dedicate his life for their futures

With her father focusing on piloting, Makoto was mostly raised by her older sister and said sister's girlfriend, Tae Takemi. Still, she looked up to her father almost too much, and knew she was going to be a pilot no matter what

Even when he died. Even when Sae tried to rip up her pilot school application. Even when she legally died for a few minutes during her final exam.

Before the exam though, she was top of her class in all categories, competing for top spot with Goro. She was dating her sync partner Eiko, was good friends with another pilot named Haru, life was good

But you know. Her partner died during the exam, and Makoto nearly did too. Their mech shorted, sending electricity right through them, and lots of it. Makoto's heart was, well, fried. But Tae and the medical team got her in and successfully implemented the 22nd functioning organ replacement

She didn't retire though, and was paired with Haru and placed in Team 3. She always feels, less than human, and fears she'll lose her humanity without her heart

Futaba

Daughter of the lead researcher, Futaba was around mech's her whole life. Her mom is still alive! And she's doing great. She didn't want Futaba to be a pilot, but she also knew she couldn't tell Futaba no and expect her to listen

In her exam her copilot died, and her spine had to be replaced. They were, crushed. Literally. Futaba won't let that stop her though, and wants to keep pace with her big brother Joker

She is unaware that she shares more blood with her brother's partner than her brother

Both she and Makoto's Replacements require monthly check ups, whereas everyone else only has to go in every 3 months

Futaba has. Something, with Sumire. They were made sync partners when they were assigned Team 3, but there's. More. Neither will admit there are feelings involved though, so it's. A work in progress

Haru

Daughter of the owner of one of the big companies that fund the pilot program, Haru entered as a secret. Her father only found out when she was accepted, and by then it was too late to turn back

She was fond of her first sync partner, but from day one she was in love with Makoto. She was fine with the way things were, and kept trudging on. She was going to be a pilot, she was going to help

In fact, she was pretty damn good. Haru was one of few that survived the final exam without needing a replacement, yet her partner still retired. She was paired with Makoto when they were placed in Team 3, and it was like a dream come true. Only, her partner is as dense as a concrete wall

Oh well. She's already waited ten years, what's a few more?

Sumire

One half of the former Yoshizawa strike team. She and her twin sister Kasumi had record high sync scores, and were on track to be the best pilots of their generation.

You can probably guess what happened.

The final exam. Their mech was sliced in half, the core exploding from the stress. The left side was completely destroyed, Kasumi along with it. Sumire survived, barely

Her left arm, leg, part of her shoulder, some ribs and a chunk of hip were all replaced. She also feels like half her soul was ripped out. She did t retire though, vowing to be the best, for her sisters sake

Paired with Futaba on Team 3, there's. Something there. Along the lines of, friends with benefits? Maybe. Kind of. They're being, selective with the whole thing

Hifumi

And finally Hifumi! She payed for a brain augmentation, a processing chip, to be placed in her brain. So she can think and plan a lot faster, but she's still getting used to the whole thing

I don't have much for her compared to the others, she's otherwise full human and tends to be sent out the least of the Team 3 pilots

Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice The book that raised me. Louis and Lestat are my parents. I cannot tell you how many times I've read this silly book.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch This book took my soul out and explained it to me and I haven't forgiven it.

Practical Magic by Alice Hoffman This is a book that makes me happy in a way I cannot explain well enough. The movie is amazing and part of my childhood but the book... I don't know, I think you have to have been a weird girl in a small seaside town to understand.

Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones You take a doomer 18 yo girl and turn her into and old lady that goes in an adventure? Like!!! Made for me, honestly.

Frankenstein by Mary Shelley Victor and I have a lot in common. LMAO.

Jane Eyre by Charlotte Brontë There's so much in this book that is Made For MeTM from Jane's childhood queer platonic relationship with the girl from her boarding school to her falling in love with the worst man ever.

Dom Casmurro by Machado de Assis Social criticism against the white middle class in hilarious prose and a crazy bitch of a protagonist? Amazing!

Il Pentamerone by Giambattista Basile The fairytale bible, also, hilarious. One of those things that makes me feel warm "people has always been people" feelings.

Kindred by Octavia E. Butler I grew up watching telenovelas in which enslaved people was tortured, can't say this story was the first in which the protagonist was a black woman in that situation (because Xica da Silva and A Escrava Mãe exist) but like it has been a while since I watched either and this book fucked me up. Also I had dengue (they call it ague in the book) just after I read it, and I know it makes no fucking sense but I blame Rufus disgusting ass.

Anansi Boys by Neil Gaiman Hilarious shit, this book is like a crazy anime I love it so much.

The Secret Garden by F. H. Burnett Because I was once a moody neglected little girl too.

Orlando by Virginia Wolf I too began as a pathetic incel and I am in hope of one day mature enough to turn into a woman.

But honestly, aside from it being hot to me like through the lens of 'I want to see how X character does in Y environment under Z circumstances', I really love that Anne didn't shy away from showing Lestat exhibiting his emotions — they're out there and he doesn't care! He literally says he loves the release that comes with crying! That kind of emotional display isn't very common in male characters, but especially so back then. And even more incredible to me is that Anne said she did that intentionally to make her male characters more relatable to a female audience.

I miss her a lot tbh, I would've loved to ask her more about this.

The lack of media literacy in fandom is sort of criminal these days.

No, if I enjoy the Anne Rice vampire books, it doesn't mean I want to drink blood and leave a trail of dead bodies behind me. No, if I love Dune, it doesn't mean I want to practice multi generational breeding programs or lead a deadly Jihad across the known universe. No, if I enjoy [insert character] it doesn't mean that I [want to be this character/do what this character does/support what this character does]

And that goes for ANYTHING. I don't support, admire, or find any random hobby interesting. Like I may love a character and they collect butterflies or make models of planes and I have sub-zero interest for doing any of those things. Me loving the blorbo doing it doesn't change that. Maybe he's a little freak and sniffing glue as he makes WWII bomber models is stupidly perfect for him but... That doesn't reflect in any way on who I am and what I'd find enjoyable in my life.

And even if I did see a character take pleasure in a thing and it tempts me to try too (idk, scrapbooking? lmao) that doesn't mean I don't have a mental and moral filter.

Thank you I'm a grown ass person fully capable of watching (and enjoying) Hannibal thriving as he serves sausages made of human meat to his love interest's dogs, without immediately getting a thirst for murder. OR COOKING SAUSAGES.

Likewise, watching the recoms be tools of empire has not made me want to sign my body and soul to my country's military! And with my knee, back, eyesight, and soft belly, I can guarantee you that even if I wanted to be cloned and turned into an alien supersoldier, the military would never sign my sorry ass in on it.

Stop being weird and abnormal about this. Enjoying bad guys is fine and deeply unproblematic. It's been done since the first songs and stories. We love a compelling villain. There's nothing odd or freaky about it, and you're not rediscovering the wheel in 2023.

Anne sees her everywhere. In her reflections, out of the corner of her eye. Her white glow, the flaking of her skin like the rustling of leaves. Because she is proof that Anne is just a copy, and her destiny is to die of old age and (probably) become a goddess. All while yearning for a land that Anne knows she no longer has the power to see.

But she's fine! Totally! She's so fine! She doesn't need to talk to anyone or worry them, not when she is the only one who is struggling. She can't hold them down.

But perhaps she can find happiness elsewhere.

This work was inspired by the common AU that Anne is haunted by her white calamity form post-canon. In particular I was inspired by the art of Spix_rave, syrasenturi, kyoryuv, and chaska_draws (go check them out on twitter they're fantastic artists). There's a lot of mental illness depiction going on here, so if the tags or writing upsets you please turn away! A huge chunk of this though is my own projection bc I have been Going Through It and this was very therapeutic to write. Lmao.

“I know you’re here.”

Anne stands in front of the mirror in her bathroom. Her fingers grip the sink so tight her knuckles turn white. If she had any more strength it might even crack. Her gaze stares right through her reflection. It’s a familiar sight; curly hair tied back in a ponytail, green work shirt, those damn brown eyes. Brown, brown, brown, her mother always said she had the prettiest eyes, brown like Jupiter, like the sand on the beach, brown like soil beneath her feet. Not blue, blue like the sky, blue like the raging sea, blue like her gemstone. They haven’t been blue in a long time. Or maybe they never were.

“Are you gonna show yourself?” She asks into the quiet. If someone were to walk in, they wouldn’t see anyone. But she’s not alone, she knows it, just as much as she knows her eyes are brown and not blue, damn you for not being blue.

She shuts her eyes. Counts to ten. When they open, she is in the mirror.

“What do you want from me?” Anne asks, for the hundredth, thousandth, millionth time. Or maybe it’s the first time she’s asked. She says nothing, like always. Her hair swoops upward like a lotus flower, eyes like diamonds. Three colors alight her old ratted uniform. Her skin cracks and flakes. Pieces of it evaporate every time she breathes.

Silence rings in the bathroom.

“Why are you here?” Anne asks. “Are you just here to torture me? To remind me of what I used to be?” Used to be, or never was? Is she just an imitation, a flawed copy made in a factory with the wrong serial number? Every piece of her is the same, every digit copied over, and yet the location of the data is different. She is a glitch of code, a rewrite of a file long since erased from the hard drive.

She reaches a hand out. She places it on the mirror.

Anne rears back. Is she trying to crawl through, to claw and tear through reality and death, undo the blessing (curse) that was given to Anne? Is it a mercy? Is it something to fear?

Her eyes line with an indescribable emotion.

“I can’t help you.” Anne rasps. “I’m not you. I’m sorry I’m not you. I want to be you, but I’m not.” she grips her chest. Her shirt wrinkles underneath a shaking fist. “Maybe if I was you, I’d figure out a way to get back. Maybe I’d be happy, I’d still talk to Sasha and Marcy. Maybe I’d see my family again.” Her chest is caving in, it is a black hole, and she is spaghettifying into it, she is a supernova, she is exploding and destroying everything in her path.

She is everything.

She is nothing.

She is immortal.

She never lived.

She punches the mirror.

joker: disappearing into the crowd. once he puts on his glasses/activates his ability in some other way he's overlooked, security cameras don't pick up on him, you can't see him unless he wants you to

ryuji: i'd say super speed makes most sense tbh?? not quicksilver-like, rather only when he chooses to activate it, and it leaves him fairly exhausted afterwards

ann: ngl i have 0 ideas for her 😭 just pyrokinesis honestly. i'm sorry ann i let you down 😔

yusuke: replicating anything he's seen in art. he can already kind of do that in canon tbh but i'm talking down to the tiniest details without needing to get a good look first

makoto: seeing the unfolding of certain choices. leaning into her strategist role and her more careful approach to things, she can see glimpses into the future before making a choice and see how things turn out whether she does one thing or the other. it's very powerful and paralyzing so i think there'll be some drawbacks, like only seeing a few seconds ahead for example

futaba: either smth like katai has aka screen manipulation (i have literally described katai as adult male futaba like 2 days ago lol) or the ability to learn things very quickly? maybe touching a book and immediately being able to know everything in it? and somehow with practice she managed to transfer it to the internet as well. it only works for raw knowledge and not like, languages and such, and she can't learn actual skills without actually doing them, more like having the right reading material in her head

haru: there's a lot of directions you can go with her and tbh the one i'm feeling the most is plant manipulation. she can't grow ones that aren't already there but she can use existing plants in her area however she wants. bc why not. it'd be cool

goro: making people go berserk lmao. no but really i feel like he'd have smth with like. masks. like he can change the way he's perceived by others. it's also kind of a flip on joker's "don't perceive me" i think, leaning into them being foils. maybe the berserk thing can be kind of like chuuya's arahabaki, but with loki. like this deity takes over him and through it he can make people lose their marbles somehow, after being experimented on (it's already kind of a common fan theory that loki is the result of goro being experimented on, and while i don't like it in p5's context, it works nicely here imo) (also i have a soft spot for this bc one of my ocs is literally that. aka was experimented on and now she can make people go insane with one touch. so i'm biased)

sumi: stealing other people's abilities ofc 👀 she maintains an ability up until she steals a different one. at first it's triggered through strong emotions and she doesn't even know she can do it or that she did it with kasumi, but she can later learn to control it and willingly steal abilities after perceiving them in action.

Summary: Armand has seen one too many TV commercials - a few days before Christmas he decides that going to a Toy Store sounds like a wonderful idea. Daniel, with not much of a better choice, obliges.

Notes: Based on a European’s experience in good old Murcia. When I was 18, I lived abroad (in California) for five months. The amount of… things did a number on me, I often felt like I was in some kind of Wonderland. This fic is partly (or mainly) inspired by my experience of an American Christmas on the West Coast. Merry Christmas to everyone who may read it.

in lieu of a break

10pm, sept 25, 2022

the title is a lie, today and yesterday have both been breaks in their own ways! but the days do start coming and they really don't stop coming, do they. kay @girlfriendsofthegalaxy did a really nice couple of posts not long ago explaining the Theory of her tuesdayposts, to which i have only to add that-- i think for me these are turning into a steam valve, where i let out whatever is happening in my head that has built up over the past little while; they are analytical or creative endeavors in their own way, sometimes, but i mainly write them for myself and my own recall (so that i can go back and check out what i wrote about first watching the untamed, for example, please see iclb 2 or 3 from way back), and to keep track of my days. which is going to mean they aren't Reviews or really Criticism, though i may dabble in both, and any enjoyment or enlightenment anyone else gets out of reading these is incidental. for this one, it's a real head empty no thoughts list of titles, so hold on to your butts let's go.

reading the big mention here is that i just finished susanna clarke's piranesi, which i didn't know how to feel about until like 30% of the way in, and then began to enjoy quite a bit as the whole conceit became clearer, and then found...melancholy but beautiful by the end. honorable mentions over the past mumblemumble weeks to (checks storygraph): squire by tamora pierce (reread), ancillary justice by ann leckie (also a reread); the raven tower (not a reread, also by ann leckie--though i still haven't finished it); and the duchess romance which i did finish mostly out of morbid curiosity.

watching strangely this will be the largest section for once! the escapism has been strong lately-- and there have been many excellent movie and tv show friendship opportunities. in reverse order, i have now seen two episodes of the new netflix bee and puppycat and find it delightful if inscrutable; i have now seen two episodes of the second season of fate: a winx saga also on netflix which i found less delightful, even more inscrutable (since i hadn't seen the first season or the previous show, lmao) but extremely funny to watch alongside more deeply invested jammies; i have now seen the first three episodes of andor and found diego luna as charming as ever; i have now seen the prestige (2006) and it did lodge in my brain in the way only very rare movies do; i have now seen the newest three (?) episodes of star trek: lower decks and did think the most recent one with the recruiting booth and the rutherford memories plotline to be incredible star trek and some of the best lower deck stuff yet; i did make my housemates watch a double-feature of the princess diaries (2001) and the princess diaries 2: royal engagement (2004), which were extremely fun and also wild opportunities for early- oughts media criticism and an in-depth examination of the portrayal of hereditary monarchy (and on the heels of qe 2's death, no less);

i FINALLY took advantage of living where i do to get to a festival screening of a film during the actual festival and have now seen catherine called birdy (2022) on the big screen (it'll be out on prime soon) which i genuinely enjoyed as a huge fan of the book and despite my feelings abt lenaham herself-- bella ramsey was perfect, andrew scott and billie piper didn't disappoint, and i could go into excessive detail about what i liked and didn't like as a medievalist but the takeaway here was 'way better than i expected, yes even that part'; *breath* AND i have now seen true grit (2010) and had some more thoughts about tragedy/catharsis/the fragility of human life. i have, as they say, the range.

huh--that's an interesting commonality i hadn't considered before, the number of 14-year-old girl protagonists in this list-- can you even imagine maddie true grit, mia from the first diaries film, and catherine birdy in a room together.

listening checked out rina sawayama's new album hold the girl (2022) and will drop in the video for the title track here. as with her other stuff, i really like her voice, her timber/range/etc seems really rich and pleasing to me, and then there'll be just...something about a song's production or whatever that turns me off of it. in this particular song, the lyrics are what got me to listen, and then the melody and her delivery next-- but i continue to be irritated by whatever spice girls pop production beat-track kicks in at like 0:27ish. this is the part of me that prefers rock to hip hop i guess, like! just commit to a drumbeat and channel the power / grandiosity from everywhere else in the song into its rhythm! is this a genre thing? is this because she's aiming for 'dance' music? ugh.

playing mostly stardew, but not as much as over the summer, now that i'm back in term time. i think i have noticed a pattern, which is that i feel the same way about trying to complete a timed errand or request in stardew that i do about trying to finish a libby ebook on time; in both cases, the deadline helps me prioritize but doesn't help me plan ahead really, and the consistent feeling of struggle just to fall short (missed gus's omelette by one egg because i didn't THINK and of course had already given him 23 other eggs so those were all forfeit) at the last minute is. hm. disappointing. keeps me coming back to try again and see if i can get it the next time though, that it does.

making made some drop-biscuits yesterday which were rich and pretty good despite not having any attempt at layers; did some mending on wednesday during dnd which was mostly not successful but did keep my hands busy (and will be the groundwork for Actually patching those leggings when i can get the sewing machine); and have now helped my housemates do some seriously refreshing furniture-and-clutter rearranging. also i opened a word doc and now have a few dozen words of creative fiction? which i keep thinking about even as getting back into it seems more and more daunting? it turns out writing for no one but yourself can be fun, wacky and wild huh.

working on this week was a turning point, in that i found reason (and was given permission) to basically abandon the direction i'd been going in all summer, in favor of working on my second chapter and coming back to the other stuff when things are a little clearer. this feels like the right call, and i hope i don't waste the reset it offers me. it does mean that i am i think officially in violation of the pact i made with @witcheryen this summer, since the writing i'd pledged to do is now...going to happen in the spring maybe? please let me know when and if you'd like to exact the agreed-upon penalties, eek. headed to a conference in a little more than a week (!), just finished coming up with a vague direction and pitch for the talk i'm giving to my on-campus research community in exactly a month (!!), and won't see my supervisor in person again until june probably. this does all explain the manic tv / movie watching up above, doesn't it. apparently i need to work on having an 'all or nothing' approach to my days, thank you @ therapist dana.

anne = i have to admit this choice was influenced by the croaking webtoon which has a character similar to anne in personality (uptight, put-together, commanding) who is an albatross. but besides that, i found the distance of this bird's flight without rest..... an interesting comparison. (years without touching land, sleeping in the air, touching down only briefly on water.) wandering albatrosses have the largest wingspan of any living bird which could match her horse being the only one other than mc's to have wings in normal canon. it's a superstition among sailors that killing an albatross brings bad luck, another superstition being that they're supernatural because they can fly for so long without even flapping. ALSO SOME ALBATROSSES ARE SAPPHIC. (i'm gonna stop before this whole post becomes me infodumping about albatrosses heh)

lisa = out of all sparrows that live in texas year-round (as in they don't migrate out of the state) rufus-crowned sparrows have the most intricate song, as well as beautiful subtle speckling on their wings that could reflect lisa's birthmark. i focused on sparrows because they're one of the smallest and most common songbirds :) also vibes (i was going to make lisa a dove which was really tempting... it came down to a spinning wheel in the end 🥲)

alex = i would've liked a bird associated with storms, but other than fictional birds the only one i could find is an australian 'storm bird' that lands before rain. so, woodpeckers seemed more appropriate in their attributes such as tenacity! as well as their physicality (not many birds attack trees literally head-on). also, fun fact, tongues of woodpeckers are one of the longest in the bird world as they wrap around the bird's skull to cushion it against hammering!

linda = owls seemed an obvious choice, but i choose the little owl specifically because they're the sacred animal of the greek goddess athena, and so the cause of owls being associated with wisdom. also, she smol :)

maya = puffins are hard little workers! living on cliffs and being preyed on by bigger birds like gulls can't be an easy life. but they survive regardless! they have quite close-knit connections among flocks, and are adaptable enough to spend time diving for fish then return to the air. the atlantic puffin's orange beak matches maya's hair :) (that's not my only reason i swear lmao; they're most regional to areas similar to jorvik. which is probably the second and last instance i've factored in location)

evergray = red knots are associated with spirituality in quite a few different cultures/mythologies. they also symbolise long journeys and adventure

ydris = magpies are nasty bastards that steal shiny things. tell me that's not ydris

avalon = honestly he seems like the type of guy to bury his head in the ground 😭 i suppose i also view him as quite tall and lanky so vibes-wise it felt like a no-brainer to me lmao

justin = look at this man and tell me he doesn't have the energy of the kind of idiot that would hang out in a crocodile's mouth

big bonny = another owl would be sensible, but i have to be honest: there are so many to choose from. i couldn't make up my mind ':) meanwhile blue jays are actually very intelligent birds that also capture bonny's intensity!

elizabeth: fun fact, robins are regarded as the most mothering birds of the bird world! also, in england (i don't know about other countries) there's a myth that each garden has one robin, and its death brings bad luck. no other robin will visit that garden afterwards

pi = ravens are symbols of death, deceit and destruction. does that not sum up pi? (even if i think they're just cool birds and don't deserve that bad rep 😭 i can't ignore connotations)
