The Fundamental Duty of Man
Pope Pius XII: Mediator Dei, "On the Sacred Liturgy," 1947:
13. It is unquestionably the fundamental duty of man to orientate his person and his life towards God. “For He it is to whom we must first be bound, as to an unfailing principle; to whom even our free choice must be directed as to an ultimate objective. It is He, too, whom we lose when carelessly we sin. It is He whom we must recover by our faith and trust.”[10] But man turns properly to God when he acknowledges His Supreme majesty and supreme authority; when he accepts divinely revealed truths with a submissive mind; when he scrupulously obeys divine law, centering in God his every act and aspiration; when he accords, in short, due worship to the One True God by practicing the virtue of religion .
14. This duty is incumbent, first of all, on men as individuals. But it also binds the whole community of human beings, grouped together by mutual social ties: mankind, too, depends on the sovereign authority of God.
15. It should be noted, moreover, that men are bound by his obligation in a special way in virtue of the fact that God has raised them to the supernatural order.

By this, St. Augustine indicates that this Jesus, whom he likes to present as the one who alone leads to the Father, is at the same time something more: more than the way that must be followed, more than the perfect model whom we must imitate, more than the veracious witness who must be believed. WIP Whenever

Instead of working on everything else I should be working on I have become obsessed with this idea and I can't think of anything else. So far too long ago @sweatandwoe tagged me in a WIP post so here we go.
Papa Nihil travels the USA with his three sons posing as a preacher to ingratiate themselves with rural Christian communities to sew discord and spread sin. One summer finds them staying with a family, helping them work their struggling farm in exchange for somewhere to stay.

The clink of ice cubes and the gravel crushing under your feet would have given you away long before you had rounded the side of the barn if not for their argument. Well you suspect they are arguing, you can never be certain due to them always speaking Italian to each other. It was hard to tell what kind of conversation they were having most times, what with their loud voices and waving hands no matter what was going on. You pause just out of sight watching the glasses of lemonade your Mother had forced you to bring out to them as they worked in the afternoon heat begin to sweat. The condensation slid down the glass shallow pools collecting at the bases on the precariously balanced tray as you listened.  
‘In ogni caso, perché ti preoccupi dei sentimenti di tutte queste stupide ragazze?’ (Anyway, why do you care about the feelings of all these stupid girls?) The words while foreign sounded dismissive and rude as though this heated discussion was already well underway before your arrival. That was Mr Emeritus you were sure, he often took that tone when he was talking to his sons. 
‘Non chiamarli così!’ (Don't call them that!) Terzo. You push aside any thoughts about why you recognise his voice so easily. He sounds irritated, his voice clipped and angry even in his more melodic mother tongue. Interest now truly piqued, you wish not for the first time that you were more cultured, more intelligent so you could have learned another language and be able to follow the conversation. 
‘Prima la scoperai, prima potremo uscire da questa discarica.’ (The sooner you fuck her, the sooner we can get out of this dump.) The sneer in his voice is so obvious it almost makes you cringe like you are on the one on the receiving end but he is almost cut off by the intended recipient, if the scuffling sound you hear is Terzo lunging at his father as you suspect. 
‘Fermare! Smettetela tutti e due. Corrompere la gioventù cristiana non significa che dobbiamo lasciare dietro di noi una scia di cuori spezzati. Il suo modo funziona, devi fidarti di lui.’ (Stop! Stop it, both of you. Corrupting Christian youth does not mean we must leave a trail of broken hearts in our wake. His way works, you have to trust him.) While spoken loud enough to cut through the fight that was clearly about to break out, the even placating tone must belong to Primo, ever the mediator of the family you had noticed.
‘Non sono più gli anni Sessanta, vecchio mio. Ci vuole qualcosa di più che sussurrare sull'amore libero per aprire loro le gambe.’ (It's not the sixties anymore, old man. It takes more than whispering about free love to open their legs.) And that must be Secondo, his deeper voice was tinged with a droll note which could be directed at any one of his father or brothers, maybe even all three. You liked him the best so far even if his sardonic humour had almost gotten you in trouble already.
‘Ah, parli della troia e lei appare.’ (Ah, you talk about the bitch and she appears.) You round the corner just as your arms start to urgently complain about you standing there with your laden tray and just in time to witness the last of their cross words.
‘Vaffanculo!’ (Fuck you!) He spits at his father, stabbing his pitch fork into the soft dirt as if he is about to storm off but he stops short when he spots you. His expression is pinched, his brow furrowed enough for lines of frustration to form. He pushes his hair back from his face, smoothing it back into place as he schools his expression into a casual smile. He is good, probably the best you have seen squashing all his true feelings behind a mask but you can see the tension still in the corner of his eyes and the tightness of his smile. It isn’t your business though so you plaster a smile on your own face and announce the reason for your interruption.
 ‘Refreshments for the workers!’ You offer the tray to Mr Emeritus first, your Mother’s hosting rules so deeply ingrained now you wouldn’t dare to do otherwise. He takes a glass from you looking at the drink then you with an air of distaste that makes your skin prickle uncomfortably. ‘It’s lemonade sir, that Mama made fresh this morning.’ He takes a cautious sip before gesturing you away. 
‘Thanks to you and to your Mother, Signorina,’ Primo says, accepting his glass. Secondo takes his with a nod and pull of his lips that could be mistaken for a smile which you return in kind. Which leaves only the youngest Emeritus. He is watching you having settled into his casually relaxed demeanour leaning against his still stuck pitch fork. Something makes you pause until he gestures you towards him. 
‘I take it this one is for me, si?’ Your mouth inexplicably goes dry as you make your way towards him. Now your job is almost complete, you have the opportunity to take him in properly. A stubborn lock of his hair, despite his best efforts has fallen loose sticking to the sheen of sweat covering his brow, in fact his youthful face positively glows with perspiration so you hurry the last few steps towards him, needing to provide him with a means to ease his heat inspired discomfort. You avoid his eyes as he takes his glass, relieving you of your burden at last and you tuck the underside of the tray against your chest in a futile attempt to shield yourself from his piercing gaze. 
He barely hesitates bringing the glass to his full lips, tipping his head back, greedily drinking the cool refreshment. He finishes it quickly with a satisfied sigh and he hands the glass back to you, his fingers grazing yours as he makes the exchange. A drop escapes the corner of his mouth slipping off his chin before he can catch it. You can’t help but follow its progress down his neck and into his open shirt collar where it settles where his chest hair begins. For some reason you find yourself transfixed as the vivid image of you closing the distance between you and following its path with your mouth fills your mind. 
‘Thank you Canaria.’ His voice abruptly snaps you out of your trance with a gasp and you can feel your blood rushing into your cheeks as you register the impropriety of your thoughts. You realise all four of them are now watching you and you pray that they hadn’t noticed your momentary distraction. They had all finished their lemonade so you shakily collect their glasses worried that the tray will slip from your grip at any moment. With a final weak smile you make your escape. 
 ‘Ci vorrà una settimana prima che tu possa indossare le sue mutande.’ (It'll be a week before you're in her underwear.) You hear Mr Emeritus mutter as you leave but you don’t wait to hear anymore. You need to get a hold of yourself and to do that you need to be as far away from him as possible.

At work, you keep everything strictly business. People respect and admire that about you and wish they could have that characteristic within themselves. You are viewed as setting a standard. As much as people want to respect your privacy, they cannot help but feel the urge to know more about you. The gist of this all, is that your coworkers highly admire you but may overstep their bounds with you if you don't remain true to your boundaries.

You are the coworker that has probably gained a reputation of being a little bit lazy but a really good time 🤣🤣🤣 I'm hearing, "this guy does the bare minimum but boy is he hilarious!". Your personality definitely makes up for your lack of work ethic, and I hope you don't take that personally 🤣🤣 However, you are so relatable and personable. You can get along with anybody ranging from the newbies to the higher-ups. You are a shape shifter as its finest. It is your witty sense of humor that brings all walks of life, together. People don't care about your work ethic after a while because your presence alone elevates them as an individual. They love having you around. In fact, your coworkers would pick up any type of slack just to have you at work. Your coworkers want to serve you and help you succeed at this job. Your sense of humor really heals a lot of your coworkers, I don't think you fully realize it. You help people take a step away from their emotions and laugh at the situation instead of mopping over it. Your sense of humor helps the higher ups zoom out a little and release a bit of control when necessary. Your sense of humor pushes the newbies to laugh at their outrageous mistakes to push them to be a better worker moving forward. You make the work force a place that makes your coworkers happy to be at. Before you arrived, your coworkers felt like they were sleepwalking through time. When you popped up, you added color, a pep to everyone's step and you woke everybody up through laughter.
Dammmnnnn, y'all are mf GEMS! Y'all might be very attractive but super humble. Your coworkers see you as someone who isn't power hungry. They view you as being someone who is content with the position they currently hold and don't care to be a leader lol with less responsibility, means more time to tell jokes 😂 people may not take you seriously....like ever but it's fine because 99.99% of the time you're not being serious 🤣 I love this vibe. I love this energy! Stay blessed 😘

a donation post, but not for me.
so. the graduate workers at the school I'm about to graduate from are on strike. they* have been on strike for 3 weeks at this point. this has happened because our university administration has shown up all year long to gaslight us at the bargaining table. we showed up, passed proposals, and they refused to pass us back any counteroffers. they spent most of this past year arguing with us about whether or not union members would be allowed to observe the bargaining process. they called in multiple mediators at multiple different times, trying to paint our union as acting unfairly/uncooperatively in this situation, and every time the impartial mediator was like "no this is fine, you should bargain with them, in fact what is your problem here exactly?"
this university is making a big performative deal out of DEI efforts, but pays its workers below the poverty line,** which of course means that graduate education here is effectively inaccessible for people who don't have family money. grad students I know have sold their plasma to make ends meet. and we are asking for many extremely reasonable things: like "don't cut our real wages"*** and "make adjustments to the childcare vouchers so people can actually use them" and "do better with protecting healthcare for trans grad workers and also with protections for survivors of sexual assault and harrassment"****. we are also asking for the creation of a nonviolent crisis response team. it's a lot of things, but a lot of them are pretty fucking basic, and we have gotten nowhere on any of that.
well, that's not entirely true. we have gotten to court. multiple times. because this administration hired fancy and expensive lawyers to sue us instead of bargaining. one of them actually said in court that they could not find more than one undergrad witness that says they have been harmed because we, their classroom instructors, are scaring them the same way a domestic abuser terrorizes their victim. literally the Larry Nasser sex abuse lawyers compared us to domestic abusers. we won one injunction and lost another (nonbinding) case.
and now, the university has decided to pay grad workers only $100 for the entire April paycheck. they saw my colleagues were starving and they said, instead of your regular salary that you already say can't cover rent, have $100. they are doing this not only to striking workers who didn't fill out this bullshit "attestation form" to say they are working, but also to workers who did fill out the form and are scabbing. also a ton of grad workers didn't even see this form because it went straight to the spam folder. this admin is extremely bad at their jobs, except when the job is to be cruel.
all of which is to say, if you have anything to spare, send it over to our union's strike fund. a bunch of folks, myself included, gave $101 just to say we paid a grad student more than the university did this month.
*not me, I'm on fellowship
** for a single-person household, as defined by the city where we live
*** nominal wage = real wage + inflation. inflation has been going absolutely hogwild lately, and admin is offering a small % wage increase that doesn't keep up with the inflation rate. and in fact is so small relative to inflation that it would erase the gains of our past 2 contract cycles.

St. Jerome, the model interpreter of Scripture
From  Scripturae Sacrae Affectus,Pope Francis' Apostolic Letter on St. Jerome:
‘Biblical passages are not always immediately accessible. As Isaiah said (29:11), even for those who know how to “read” – that is, those who have had a sufficient intellectual training – the sacred book appears “sealed”, hermetically closed to interpretation. A witness is needed to intervene and provide the key to its liberating message, which is Christ the Lord. He alone is able to break the seal and open the book (cf. Rev 5:1-10) and in this way unveil its wondrous outpouring of grace (Lk 4:17-21). Many, even among practising Christians, say openly that they are not able to read it (cf. Is 29:12), not because of illiteracy, but because they are unprepared for the biblical language, its modes of expression and its ancient cultural traditions. As a result the biblical text becomes indecipherable, as if it were written in an unknown alphabet and an esoteric tongue.
‘This shows the need for the mediation of an interpreter, who can exercise a “diaconal” function on behalf of the person who cannot understand the meaning of the prophetic message. Here we think of the deacon Philip, sent by the Lord to approach the chariot of the eunuch who was reading a passage from Isaiah (53:7-8), without being able to unlock its meaning. “Do you understand what you are reading?” asked Philip, and the eunuch replied: “How can I, unless someone guides me?” (Acts 8:30-31).[32]
‘Jerome can serve as our guide because, like Philip (cf. Acts 8:35), he leads every reader to the mystery of Jesus, while responsibly and systematically providing the exegetical and cultural information needed for a correct and fruitful reading of the Scriptures.[33] In an integrated and skilful way he employed all the methodological resources available in his day – competence in the languages in which the word of God was handed down, careful analysis and examination of manuscripts, detailed archeological research, as well as knowledge of the history of interpretation – in order to point to a correct understanding of the inspired Scriptures.
‘This outstanding aspect of the activity of Saint Jerome is also of great importance for the Church in our own time. If, as Dei Verbum teaches, the Bible constitutes as it were “the soul of sacred theology”[34] and the spiritual support of the Christian life,[35] the interpretation of the Bible must necessarily be accompanied by specific skills."

Ieri sera sono finalmente riuscita a tornare a correre dopo un sacco, ne avevo un gran bisogno e sono stata contenta. Come sempre ho pensato assai, questa volta sulla rappresentazione del sé, un mosaico di varie idee alimentate in questi giorni, forse più un caleidoscopio per come si spostavano un passo dopo l'altro, e provo a mettere qualche pezzetto qui nero su bianco, giusto per non lasciare tutto al vento.
Tra una cosa e l'altra erano due mesi che non correvo e ne sentivo davvero la mancanza. Incrociando le dita mi dovrebbe essere passata la tosse e c'è stato anche un calo della temperatura sotto i 30° C e sono uscita in orario dall'ufficio e la mia amica che un anno e passa fa mi aveva chiesto consiglio mi aveva raccontato che aveva cominciato a correre sotto casa in questi giorni e mi aveva fatto salire ancora di più la voglia e insomma la combinazione di elementi era perfetta.
Ovviamente come sempre dopo una pausa manco 10 minuti di seguito riesco a fare, quindi su 6 km ne avrò corsi 5, ma vabbè. Per me quello che conta non è tanto la distanza o la velocità, ma la soddisfazione finale, e quindi sono andata avanti senza troppe remore un po' correndo e un po' camminando, come avevo consigliato di fare anche alla mia amica in effetti. E intanto ho pensato a ruota libera alle varie cose che mi venivano in mente, sulla scia degli eventi di questi ultimi giorni.
Ho pensato al teatro e alla narrazione biografica, dato che ho fatto di recente un regalo legato a entrambe queste cose, e sono pure stata a vedere uno spettacolo pseudo-autobiografico che mi è piaciuto molto. La biografia effettivamente è uno dei generi che preferisco, anche se non è facile a volte capire quanto ci sia di romanzato nelle storie raccontate e non è la stessa cosa se è qualcun altro a raccogliere una storia invece che parlare di sè, ma alla fine tutte le narrazioni e le trasposizioni sono sempre mediate, anche da sé stessi e dal ricordo che abbiamo degli eventi passati, alla fine è comunque una "nostra" interpretazione. Mi sono chiesta quale sarebbe la storia che io racconterei di me stessa, con quale media potrei mai essere in grado di farlo: scrivere e illustrare forse sono gli unici in cui potrei provare, ma ci sono tanti altri modi anche all'interno di questi due campi e credo che non verrebbe mai fuori la stessa storia, non agli occhi di qualcun altro e forse neppure miei. Chissà se un giorno rileggendomi mi riconoscerei, cosa ricorderei, cosa rinnegherei, in quale abisso finirei persa, a volte mi capita con i vecchi diari, anche con i vecchi post, a volte mi capita anche con gli oggetti che mi passano tra le mani quando sistemo le mie cose, fare il trasloco infatti è stata un'impresa emotivamente pesantissima anche per questo.
Ho pensato a quanto sia difficile eppure importante conoscere le storie degli altri, a quanto i monologhi siano un genere che molti non apprezzano, perchè forse ne hanno visti di noiosi e hanno perso fiducia, ma a me piace molto, anche se effettivamente è difficile tenere viva l'attenzione di un pubblico quando sei da solo in scena o quando parli in prima persona per oltre 300 pagine. Ho pensato alle difficoltà che ha incontrato una mia amica, l'autrice del testo teatrale/biografia che ho regalato, nel gestire una carriera "in solitaria" e a quanto sia complicato come mondo quello del teatro e in generale quello dell'arte, dell'espressione artistica qualunque sia il media scelto per dare vita alle proprie creazioni. Siamo in un periodo storico strano e pieno di contraddizioni.
Ho pensato alla buona dose di narcisismo che ci vuole per mettersi in scena e in mostra, paradossalmente in questo momento di sovraesposizione del sé con i social, e quanto ci sia di artificiale e di autentico, in quello che raccontiamo di noi. Un esibizionismo paradossalmente timido, chissà quanto consapevolmente selettivo. Anche ora che scrivo la scelta delle parole è ovviamente soppesata, anche se sto andando abbastanza a ruota libera, tra il ricordo di quello che ho pensato ieri e quello che ne viene fuori ora, sul filo della logica delle frasi e della rilettura prima di pubblicare questi miei pensieri più o meno sparpagliati. Chissà come sarebbe una AI basata sulla mia produzione letteraria.
Ho pensato ai compromessi che facciamo quando ci esponiamo agli altri, in questa narrazione pubblica o semiprivata, ai confronti che siamo disposti ad accettare e a quelli che preferiamo evitarci, o che magari preferiremmo evitare ma siamo comunque costretti a subire.
Non è un caso che io pensi a queste cose nel mese in cui si sono sposati in pompa magna due miei colleghi, ciascuno per conto suo, mentre io sto cercando di capire come organizzare un matrimonio in cui non vorrei invitare nessuno, ma non so come sottrarmi alla pubblica opinione rispetto quello che si dovrebbe fare in questo genere di circostanze e alle reazioni di offesa di parenti vari. Ho pensato anche a questo ieri sera, dopo aver passato qualche minuto online a confrontare modelli e prezzi delle fedi nuziali, giusto per non presentarmi da completa ignorante in gioielleria, per poi sbirciare un paio di articoli random di consigli per una buona organizzazione del matrimonio dei sogni. Io non li ho mai avuti questi sogni, pensavo correndo, l'ennesima cosa generalmente considerata femminile che non mi appartiene, e chissà cosa dice questo di me, chissà se sono sbagliata in qualche senso. Ogni tanto lo penso, mi chiedo se ci sia qualcosa che non torna, poi mi dico che non importa, rispetto a tante altre cose che sono, che faccio, che voglio, questo è il genere di cose che non importano. Il femminile, il maschile, sono qualifiche che non importano granché. A me, perlomeno. E se non importano a me, per quanto riguarda me stessa va bene così. Però ogni tanto mi devo fare un appunto mentale, perchè è facile dimenticarlo e tornare nel dubbio. L'autostima va coltivata costantemente, mi dico, a costo di sforare a volte nel narcisismo.
A prescindere dal maschile e dal femminile e da qualsiasi attribuzione più o meno anacronistica, comunque, l'idea del matrimonio mi inquieta. Non il fatto di essere sposati, quello sarebbe la parte bella che viene dopo e in cui vorrei già ufficialmente essere e in cui di fatto mi trovo da diversi anni, ma proprio l'evento nozze, l'organizzazione e la programmazione e gli acquisti e gli appuntamenti, mi mettono molto nervosismo. Non fanno per me e vorrei vivere in un modo e in un mondo in cui poter sorvolare allegramente tutto questo e invece sento già lo sguardo altrui sulle mie scelte. Anche quello premuroso di chi vuole il mio bene, eh, anche quello è un poco pesante in questo frangente. Che poi spero di riuscire a fare quello che voglio e non di più, ma intanto mi sale lo stesso il nervoso. Che pazienza. Intanto correre aiuta, al di là delle endorfine, basta incrociare un cane buffo e l'umore si alza e il filo dei pensieri si snoda più leggero.
Alla fine avrei potuto stare in giro anche di più, ma non ho voluto rischiare, e i postumi di oggi sono abbastanza contenuti. Chissà se domani riesco a uscire di nuovo.

The Faithful's Chief Duty and Supreme Dignity
Pope Pius XII, Mediator Dei, 1947:
79. The august sacrifice of the altar is, as it were, the supreme instrument whereby the merits won by the divine Redeemer upon the cross are distributed to the faithful: “as often as this commemorative sacrifice is offered, there is wrought the work of our Redemption.”[76] This, however, so far from lessening the dignity of the actual sacrifice on Calvary, rather proclaims and renders more manifest its greatness and its necessity, as the Council of Trent declares.[77] Its daily immolation reminds us that there is no salvation except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ[78] and that God Himself wishes that there should be a continuation of this sacrifice “from the rising of the sun till the going down thereof,”[79] so that there may be no cessation of the hymn of praise and thanksgiving which man owes to God, seeing that he required His help continually and has need of the blood of the Redeemer to remit sin which challenges God’s justice.
80. It is, therefore, desirable, Venerable Brethren, that all the faithful should be aware that to participate in the eucharistic sacrifice is their chief duty and supreme dignity, and that not in an inert and negligent fashion, giving way to distractions and day-dreaming, but with such earnestness and concentration that they may be united as closely as possible with the High Priest, according to the Apostle, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus.”[80] And together with Him and through Him let them make their oblation, and in union with Him let them offer up themselves.

82. The fact, however, that the faithful participate in the eucharistic sacrifice does not mean that they also are endowed with priestly power. It is very necessary that you make this quite clear to your flocks.
83. For there are today, Venerable Brethren, those who, approximating to errors long since condemned[82] teach that in the New Testament by the word “priesthood” is meant only that priesthood which applies to all who have been baptized; and hold that the command by which Christ gave power to His apostles at the Last Supper to do what He Himself had done, applies directly to the entire Christian Church, and that thence, and thence only, arises the hierarchical priesthood. Hence they assert that the people are possessed of a true priestly power, while the priest only acts in virtue of an office committed to him by the community. Wherefore, they look on the eucharistic sacrifice as a “concelebration,” in the literal meaning of that term, and consider it more fitting that priests should “concelebrate” with the people present than that they should offer the sacrifice privately when the people are absent.
84. It is superfluous to explain how captious errors of this sort completely contradict the truths which we have just stated above, when treating of the place of the priest in the Mystical Body of Jesus Christ. But we deem it necessary to recall that the priest acts for the people only because he represents Jesus Christ, who is Head of all His members and offers Himself in their stead. Hence, he goes to the altar as the minister of Christ, inferior to Christ but superior to the people.[83] The people, on the other hand, since they in no sense represent the divine Redeemer and are not mediator between themselves and God, can in no way possess the sacerdotal power.
85. All this has the certitude of faith.

L’EVOLUZIONE DELLA PITTURA
Tra la fine del XIV e gli inizi del XV secolo, nel “Libro dell’Arte”, Cennino Cennini scriveva che per la pittura «conviene avere fantasia e operazione di mano, di trovare cose non vedute, cacciandosi sotto ombra di naturali, e fermarle con la mano, dando a dimostrare quello che non è, sia. E con ragione merita metterla a sedere in secondo grado alla scienza e coronarla di poesia». Quando Cennino si cimentava nella teoria dell'arte, Giotto, la punta più avanzata della nuova pittura, era già scomparso da oltre sessant'anni, lasciando in eredità l’apertura alla terza dimensione e con essa le infinite possibilità della narrazione, le ambientazioni naturalistiche, l’espressività che connota la psicologia delle figure ritratte, la magia della luce attraverso i colori. Ma anche qualcosa di più: il ruolo della pittura quale strumento principe di nuove forme di visione. Detta così sembra semplice. Eppure, la questione non può limitarsi a registrare il processo di maturazione in atto tra la fine del '200 e gli inizi del '300.La pittura rimase a lungo relegata in una manieristica, ossessiva ripetizione del modello "costantinopolitano": forse per la mancanza di riferimenti alternativi? Forse perché le arti plastiche coglievano le opportunità del tutto tondo ovvero dell’altorilievo che colori e pennelli non erano in grado di equiparare? Cosa accadde ai vari Giunta Pisano, Coppo di Marcovaldo, Cimabue, Giotto e Duccio di Buoninsegna perché si destassero spalancando all’arte scenari inconsueti e fecondi? E perché questo cambiamento, pur timido nelle sue fasi iniziali, si affermò proprio nel momento in cui i modelli bizantini, dopo la IV crociata del 1204 e la conquista di Costantinopoli, proliferavano nell'Europa occidentale? Proviamo a capire. Senza dubbio la pittura era più economica e più rapida da realizzare. Poi, occorre aggiungere, si affermò l’uso della “tavola” dipinta poiché poteva essere rimossa e così fungere anche da icona per le processioni. Naturalmente, non basta. Esisteva un riflesso culturale legato all’opera pittorica, una dimensione nella quale il dipinto è soggetto-oggetto: modificare questa concezione, diffusa e consolidata, diveniva atto di un riformismo radicale che non poteva essere accolto così facilmente. Quindi, la pittura nuova doveva nascere in un mutato ambiente culturale, quando gradualmente le generazioni dell’urbanesimo italiano (e non solo italiano) maturarono paradigmi differenti attribuendo alla figurazione funzioni diverse dal passato. In questa scia ci si accorse che la scultura possedeva una capacità narrativa intensa ma insufficiente a descrivere le novità della rivoluzione commerciale ed il cambiamento dei costumi sociali: sul supporto bidimensionale la descrizione del mondo e dei suoi contenuti è molto più agevole, potenzialmente più ampia, diventa soprattutto una questione tecnica prima che stilistica. Anche le sensibilità religiose si stavano trasformando: influenzate e mediate dagli Ordini mendicanti, presenze che hanno luogo nella città, nella fitta trama di società convulse, tendono a farsi corpo di una nuova espressività, più profonda, più vicina ai sentimenti dei nuovi ceti sociali e del loro protagonismo. Non è un caso se spicca la figura di San Francesco che diventerà uno dei soggetti preferiti della figurazione pittorica. Allo stesso modo, il Cristo crocifisso transita dall’essere "triumphans" al diventare "patiens", mentre la Vergine in trono, che simboleggia l’Ecclesia e tiene in braccio Gesù Bambino, comincia ad assumere in volto un’espressione carica di umano sentimento e di afflato materno. La prospettiva è ancora fragile. Eppure esiste: si tratta di una prospettiva inversa, quella che colloca il punto di fuga verso lo spettatore come per accoglierlo entro la scena rappresentata. Tutti assieme, questi elementi costituiscono i vagiti ancora lontani dell'Umanesimo: è lo spirito che si realizza nella storia.
