Fuck it, I will name my dinos in homage to Dinosaur King, so I will have two trex, one named Rexy and needs to be female to reference Jurassic Park and the other- I need to search cuz has been a while since I watched Dinosaur King and I only remembef Chompy that in portuguese is named Gabu
there's no genders for dinos in paleo pines, neither there are for player to choose actually; they all go by they/them. who's to stop you from assigning them ones tho

hey . hey hey. are you like me in the fact that you used to like httyd as a kid
and then when the hidden world came out you really didn't like it and you didn't know why
well a few weeks ago i got my little goblin hands on the httyd hidden world art book and then realized. O h . The reason i didnt like it was because they were telling a different story than the one i wanted to hear. they wanted to tell a story about The Wild and Nature and i just wanted to see the funny dragon and his best friend be best firends
so i am going to start brain dumping about my httyd modern au rewrite
here's some out of context fun facts !!
toothless really fucking loves humans. he is dragon autistic about them
hiccups real name is Hayden but hiccup was a nickname that Just Kinda Stuck
toothless and the lightfury are siblings. she is so tired of his shit. theyre Worsties
hiccup is aroace
the hidden world is a universe parallel to our own where dragons live. we get the cryptid/ghost hunter vibes :333
they all get to use magic and i think im gonna give hiccup a dragon form or something (pleasing the child in me who wanted hiccup to Be Dragon Also)
lightfuries are the "main" species, an exclusively albino variant that survived well due to their semitranslucent skin allowing them to become invisible. nightfuries are melanistic, very rare versions (a subspecies)
they're derived from a common ancestor, a gray dragon that was probably called sky furies or something
since i'm american (unfortunately) the whole story takes place on the north shore bc there's lots of nordic stuff there. new berk (hiccups town) was made by viking settlers thousands of years ago and that's why they all have funky viking names because Honoring Heritage
dragons :3333

The dragons from httyd universe are our world’s sharks. Both are highly misunderstood, incredible creatures that can bring people together— but whose greatest threat is humanity. In this essay… jk
I made Toothless a (semi) melanistic mako shark— one of the fastest sharks in the world. Despite their size, makos have been seen forcing great whites to give them a wide breadth— as told by scientists anecdotally.
Just like the Night Fury, mako sharks are being hunted to near extinction. It’s up to us to save these beautiful creatures.

I’ve been getting into the headcanon that Night Furies can come in more colours than just black. Partly because Toothless’ design was based on a black panther, so I like the idea that he’s melanistic, and partly because… well, one of the arguments for not having him fall for another Night Fury is that ‘people wouldn’t be able to tell the difference’. Well, they could have, if the other NF wasn’t all black.
Which isn’t to say Toothless should be the only black “OMG so unique and special” NF, because that’s just as stupid. Even if the black coloration is due to melanism, in NFs it makes sense to be a dominant trait. But more colourful dragons is always fun. So here’s some blue colour shades, along with the sRGB codes in case you get inspired and want to plug these colours into your own designs.
If you dim the brightness of your device way down it’ll give an idea of how these colours look in low light. Personally my headcanon is that the various shades are a trade off between being camouflaged and attracting mates. Perhaps the darker coloured individuals are better at hiding/hunting at night, but a brighter colour is also attractive because they show the NF is strong and has survived in spite of it.

unpopular opinion: I’m hoping that white night fury is some oddball-ass 102 dalmatians albino/leucistic shit
I mean odds are still on obligatory dimorphic het love interest but maybe without reflecting on the rest of the species at least
thoroughly prepared to post that “man loses last additional bit of hope he didn’t even know he had” onion headline tho

A long time ago I had a HTTYD-related dream where Toothless wasn’t actually a black dragon, but a white dragon just covered in years and years soot and dirt (kinda like Chief from Isle of Dogs), and now I lowkey wanna make an AU where the Night Fury species doesn’t exist and Toothless was actually a Light Fury all along.
That or he’s a melanistic variation, which I’ve seen people do before.

In a world where HTTYD 3 wasn't complete crap:
Plot twist! Toothless is not the last Night Fury... he's the first.
"the unholy offspring of lightning and death" could actually mean something, in that Toothless is the theoretically impossible hybrid offspring of two different dragon species (Screaming Death x Skrill? Or two completely different dragon species with Death and Lightning in their names/arsenal), and is the first of his line.
Light(ning) Furies, if they made any appearances at all, would either be a dramatically-different-looking parent species of Toothless that share only a few distinctive traits that lets the characters realize they're related, or "the" Light(ning) Fury (who would actual get a name like everyone else instead of existing purely as Toothless' love interest) would be another hybrid that is around his size and general shape, with a few extra bells and whistles thrown in because she's not a slimmed down feminine copy of Toothless in this universe >:/
And hey! If Lightning Furies are here as one of the parent species, they would either be absolutely massive and spikey with electricity courses between their spines, each wingclap sending the sound of thunder over the land.... or they could be teeny tiny compared to Toothless, quick and darting and streamlined, so fast they attack like lightning, darting in to bite with their sheddable stun-gun teeth before flashing back out of range of retaliation, stalking from the shadows to suddenly strike again from the opposite side without warning, never striking the same spot twice so they don't hurt themselves on their own electric fangs. And no, they would not be pure white, or at least, not all the time. They would have very strong bioluminescence that they use to stun their prey with a blinding flash of light as they attack.
"death Furies" Could be silent, eerie, batlike behemoths that navigate with echolocation and kill with a deadly poison they coat their retractable claws with, a poison that slowly drains the victim's energy as they flee while the Death Fury patiently follows, waiting for the inevitable to take their prey with no hurry in their tremor-causing steps. Or maybe again, they are small, and travel in packs, swarming silently through the shadows as they stalk their prey, overwhelming their prey with their sheer numbers as, alone, a single Death Fury does not have enough venom on their claws to be lethal, so many travel together to bring their poison to a lethal dose in their prey, the death of a thousand cuts.
Toothless COULD have hybrid gigantism and has grown far bigger than both his parents, standing like a protective giant as he defends them from the villain of the year, or he could still be young, still be growing (and have Hiccup commenting that Toothless is going through a growth spurt at the beginning of the movie as he adjust the tailfin's size, and Toothless is significantly larger than he was in the second movie), still small for now as his parents stand taller than a mountain, his lifespan stretching ahead of him for hundreds of years to come until he too flies through the air and blocks out the moon and stars for entire islands with the span of his wings.
Just. These movies had So Much Potential when it comes to design and plot and they just... Ruined it all by tossing everything that was established as having meaning in the previous parts of the series into the trash; as the one post put it, the villain won, the villain burned Berk to the ground, the island home that our main characters have been fighting to the death to protect for generations, and no one, not the audience nor the characters cared or even NOTICED.
Why is every other dragon in existence a myriad of chaotic colors and patterns while Toothless and the Light Furies plain black and white with no creativity? Toothless could have at least canonically been a melanistic mutation and have all other Furies be rainbows to rival Stormfly... but no, the creators aren't even going to show actual Night Furies, unless they're dead pelts of one.

Fave dino and color pattern in paleo pines?
good question. I think my fav dino is the utahraptor and all the other feathered dinos, love Paprika
fav colors - oh dear, there's so many of them that I can't decide XD proud amethyst and proud lotus surely have an honourable place. on individual species I like the rose colour with stripes pattern on utahraptor and marzipan on ceratosaurus. besides, off top of my head it's storm, friday, rust, boz and coffee
I also love how the melanistic variation for all species seem to be particularly inspired by toothless

fury dragon family theory
another httyd analysis because i cant help myself!!! pls let me know ur thoughts as always :D
so, if you've read my last post you know that i see toothless as very panther-like
Tumblr media Tumblr media
they have similar coloration - mainly, mostly black with faint markings - and they're both felines (well, toothless is feline coded, but anyway). this also makes a lot of sense when you take into account toothless has very few natural enemies in the food chain, as do black panthers.
so what is a black panther? they're just leopards, honestly. specifically, melanistic leopards. basically, the opposite of albino - the stuff that albino animals lack, melanistic animals have an abundance of, and are therefore dark colored. therefore, i don't think night furies are a species at all, just like black panthers aren't!
melanistic traits come from genetic mutations. if this were to happen to a weaker dragon that is naturally lighter colored, that specific dragon would be easily spotted, die, and fail to pass on its genes. however, since night furies are naturally so powerful, i think that a few melanistic furies occurred, survived, and bred enough to make a subdivision of melanistic "night" furies.
so what is a "fury" then??? well, it's definitely a strike class dragon - the speed and intelligence are obvious. additionally, the need for echolocation insinuates that they're probably nocturnal, like felines. we can get a good idea of what a standard fury might look like if we simply edit toothless to be lighter
so maybe like this! (ignore my bad editing skills lol)
Tumblr media
for the purposes of this post, let's call this the "standard" or "dusk" fury. you'll notice i accentuated his markings a lot more, and specifically made a bit of a stripe near his eye - that's because dragons, like birds, get the sun in their eyes a lot while flying, and i thought this coloration would suit him! i also gave him blue eyes instead of green, as green eyes are more common in melanistic animals who have blue eyes originally.
let's talk about those markings though - they would be super useful in the environment that toothless lives in: a snowy mountainous region. this is taking from snow leopards, who live in similar regions, and are VERY good at camouflage.
Tumblr media
like this ^^
now, i hear you. but travers! that fury edit is basically monochromatic, how would it hide in the wild? okay, first of all, due to furies' echolocation ability, i think it's safe to assume they're night hunters. also, if you accidentally found a 26 foot long dragon, would you bother it? nah.
so what do we know about standard furies? well, what do we know about toothless, and how much of that could be adapted based on his coloring? let's list his capabilities:
- echolocation: helps him navigate in the dark for nocturnal purposes. standard furies share this trait
- retractible teeth/splitting spines: implied to be a multi-species trait. standard furies wouldn't necessarily have these
- tail fins and secondary wings: aid in turning and gliding. standard furies have these.
- strike class traits: as a strike class dragon, toothless has intelligence, speed, and a strong jaw. the standard fury would operate in the same class
- aquatic abilities: toothless can canonically swim very well! it's no surprise, due to his strong wings and tail shape - it's almost like he's build to be semi-aquatic. which makes sense, because his diet is mostly fish, and he lives in an archipelago!
so basically, night furies really are just melanistic dusk furies! because they're already nocturnal, they didn't need to evolve any further to survive.
okay. so let's talk about other members of the fury family - the light fury, and the night lights.
i will be conveniently disregarding most of httyd 3, and i apologize for that. let's focus on the light bright fury's concept art.
Tumblr media
now, i definitely think this is a more aquatic dragon. specifically, a dragon that lives near ice - the blueish coloring, fat dispersion, thicker scales, and fins tell me that much. also, her secondary wings seem more suited for aquatic travel than long flying trips. and look closely - she has the stripe near her eyes to see better!
what's up with that tail though? there are sails on it. well, sails are actually used in temperature regulation! i'm not sure what her rounder spines could mean, but it's possible that they also let her swim better.
take a close look at her mouth in the drawings - it's almost like she has mist or fog coming out of her mouth. i mean, fire is dangerous and difficult to maintain in a cold climate. could it be that the bright fury uses mist to confuse her victims and gives them ice burns? it's possible!
(we do have to take into account that she's more into adulthood than toothless though)
so we've established three dragons in the fury family - the night fury, the dusk fury, and the bright fury. the night and bright fury are very similar except in rarity and melanin - they're semi-aquatic nocturnal strike class dragons designed to fly long distances in cold-climate island chains. however, the bright fury is a demi-aquatic strike class dragon who uses mist to entrap its victims and uses ice to kill them. they both use echolocation - the night + dusk furies in darkness, and the bright fury in snow storms.
let me know if you have any ideas for any other species in the fury family! also lmk if you have any criticisms :)

They should have made other furies more draconic and crazy than Toothless and it turns out Toothless is just a runt like Hiccup. And also melanistic? He’s the reason they’re called Night Furies. He’s the only one Berk has ever seen. And then you see others and they’re just. as crazy and diverse as the other dragons.

I just really can’t see the people behind HTTYD going for the obvious route with this new white dragon. There’s been far too much heart and soul in the first two HTTYD films for this new one to be so cut and dry
I feel like there’s going to be some massive twist, and it’s just going to be a manner of what that twist is.
Perhaps the new dragon is piebald or albino, which has led it to hiding and secluding itself.
Perhaps nightfuries are meant to be white, and toothless is a melanistic oddity
Perhaps the new dragon is a shapeshifter of some sort
Perhaps the new dragon is male
A step further, perhaps Toothless is actually female and it’s female nightfuries that are more darkly pigmented
I just can’t see them going for the obvious, and I HOPE they don’t go for the obvious.
