14. kissing under the stars polyphantoms 👀

"I don't want to go home," Reggie had whispered hours ago. Alex and Luke had looked at each other and silently agreed on a course of action, which led the three of them to where they were currently: sprawled on their backs on the beach somewhere between Santa Monica and Venice.

It was long past dusk; the sun had already set over the ocean in front of them and if there wasn't so much light pollution they'd be able to see the stars a little better. Maybe if they had a car between the three of them, they could've driven a little further north to a more secluded beach somewhere along Highway 1.

But instead they were here, pressed shoulder to shoulder in the sand with Reggie's hands clasped firmly in theirs.

"Can we stay here forever?" Reggie asks, his voice a little weak after spending so long being silent.

"Yeah," Luke answers easily as Alex squeezes Reggie's hand.

"As long as you want," he adds, turning his head to look at Reggie. When Reggie meets his gaze, Alex forgets how uncomfortable he was feeling a minute ago.

It's always cooler on the beach, especially after the sun's gone down, and Alex's hoodie only does so much to keep him warm when his body's pressed against the cold sand. But the way Reggie smiles at him makes Alex practically glow.

Alex smiles back and shifts a little closer to Reggie, closing the gap between them with a soft kiss. When he pulls back, his eyes flick past Reggie to see Luke rolled up onto his side. Alex laughs as Luke takes Reggie by surprise, cupping his hand around Reggie's jaw as he kisses him too, already smiling when he pulls away.

Luke grabs Alex next, spilling more sand across both of them as he fists his hand in Alex's hoodie while he leans over Reggie to bring their lips together. Afterwards, Alex grimaces a little and swipes the sand off of the front of his hoodie, giving Luke a little shove.

But Luke doesn't mind. He just laughs and lays his head down on Reggie's chest while he puts his hand on Alex's waist to keep both of them as close as he can. Alex tucks his head in the crook of Reggie's neck and tangles their fingers together, tilting his gaze back up to the sky and for a moment, he swears he sees a shooting star.

1.) What is your favorite problematic theme/trope that appears in a lot of your ships?

Hm its not exactly a trope in itself but i ADORE guilt. I think most if not all my ships have the characters feeling guilty for loving each other. Most of the problematic ships I have rely a LOT on one or more parties hating themselves for it.

4.) First ever problematic ship? (you didn't have to know it was problematic then)

Probably Casey/Derek from Life with Derek, as they were step-siblings, but I think Sebastian/Ciel from Black Butler was my point of no return lol

1, Ghosted by Jeremy Shada

No one is surprised by this right? I really like this song (was a little more meh about the follow up) and of course, Jeremy is my eternal problem. It's a hashtag for a reason.

2. Good Kid from The Lightning Thief musical

This was actually my top Spotify song last year. I really liked the Percy Jackson books but I adored the musical soundtrack, and I became almost addicted to this song. Definite favourite.

3. Pride First by Carson James Argenna

This came up on my Spotify Discovery (pretty much how I find any new music these days) and I really liked it. Can't put my finger onto why, but I would recommend giving it a listen!

4. You're Amazing by Martin Kerr

I think I have mentioned this song to Katie before as being a great Reggie song, like I can see him singing this to whoever, throwing a wink in at the chorus; "I'm not bad myself, but you're amazing." Like come on!

5. The Ballad of Sara Berry from 35MM: A Musical Exhibition

The wild card of the bunch! This is a grisly kind of song with a super upbeat tempo that I dunno, just stuck in my head and hasn't left. Like I am here humming the chorus as I type this, so take what you will of that.

So I used to be the kind of person who had themed playlists, plural, and then itunes wasn’t really a thing anymore and I lost my hard drive full of music (an enormous tragedy i’m still in denial about.) I literally have a playlist on spotify called “Reconstruction” that’s just me trying to remember my 20s through music.

That being said, I just let YouTube play “My Mix” to see what it thinks I’ve been into lately.

1. Backseat of a Greyhound Bus - Sara Evans (I FULLY blame @where-you-go for this one; she put it on the jane/missy mix for a star sweetly gleaming and i became obsessed with it)

2. Asheville - Bright Star (the musical) (I very much want to perform this; it fits in my voice so perfectly. SOMEONE CAST ME. OR I NEED A REGGIE TO PLAY BANJO FOR ME)

3. I’ll Cover You Reprise (Rent) (For all your crying needs!)

4. Neon Moon - Brooks & Dunn (I just think Reggie loves this song and it would be a great JatP cover, complete with Julie on fiddle)

5. I’m Kissing You - Des’ree (from the Romeo + Juliet soundtrack, this was the processional at my wedding and it was amazing)

6. Run Away With Me - Michael Arden (Kerrigan & Lowdermilk) (a fantastic musical theatre-style song I’ve sung at open mics before)

7. This Love - Taylor Swift (Taylor’s Version) (I’m obsessed with this because it’s extremely to love’s self alone vibes)

The other three are trading ideas for where to go for dinner while they all pack up their instruments. Reggie's keeping quiet, mainly because he has a hard enough time picking a place to eat on his own. He'll go with the majority rule on this one to save himself some strife.

Just as he opens his mouth to agree with Bobby's suggestion, Reggie catches a glimpse of the biggest and fluffiest dog he's ever seen in his life. His jaw goes slack as he openly stares at it, feeling overwhelmed with the desire to run up and bury his face in its fur and frozen in place all at once.

The dog looks so happy to be out and about too, and Reggie can't tear his eyes away. He cranes his neck as the dog and its owner pass by, following them as long as he can before they've disappeared from his view.

Reggie sighs as he turns back to his bass, flicking the clips down so the case is properly closed before he lifts his head and finds his three bandmates staring at him.

"What?" he asks sheepishly. "Did I miss something?"

Luke snorts as he crosses his arms, and Alex rolls his eyes.

"I told you he wasn't listening," Alex tells the other two.

None of them look particularly frustrated, but Reggie still finds himself starting to blush as they all keep looking at him.

"I saw a dog," he admits in a soft voice, "and I stopped listening."

"We know," Bobby replies, reaching out to pat Reggie's shoulder. "It's cute."

And now for the 3-5 songs for Nature 2.0 ... I mean, I have so many more on the official playlist but here's a few from this very eclectic soundtrack that tries to capture the epicness and softness and melancholy of this MGS white whale of a fic:

Nitzer Ebb - "I Am Undone" - this was the first song I encountered where I went "Oh, Nature 2.0 vibes!! I should save that in a playlist or something." The lyrics don't fit 100% but somehow it's still the perfect song for this fic.

MNQN - "What Have You Become?" - More of the Industrial sound digging into the themes of transformation and mutation. Especially these lines are very apt: "Only a few species ever undergo change - The others become extinct - Man will almost certainly be replaced by a new order of intelligence - Stop looking for monsters under your bed - You are the monster"

Hurts - "The Road" - This isn't much about the lyrics but I love the juxtaposition between the softer parts and the harshness interrupting it. It just fits the idea of this story so well with the danger and importance of the mission juxtaposed with two men falling in love in the quiet moments in-between. There's a surprising amount of philosophising happening in the original game and that was definitely the plan to rescue for this story. The structure of the song just mirrors that perfectly.

Montserrat Figueras/Jordi Savall - "El Cant De La Sibil·La" - this ... yeah, this has been on the playlist pretty much from the beginning. The sadness of it fits the tragedy of the fic. You know, I've actually never bothered to look up the meaning until now but learning that the lyrics are about a prophecy about the end of the world is just sooo perfect for the scope of the fic!!!

Clint Mansell - "Leaving Earth" (Mass Effect OST) - Mass Effect my beloved!! This instrumental piece is so full of feelings: epicness, softness, harshness. And as such it's perfect for my Nature 2.0 soundtrack as well ;D

Carina Round - "For Everything a Reason" - this is an 'end credits' song for me and the first one I put on the playlist (there's a few more of those by now). It doesn't really make sense for a fic soundtrack but in my head the fic is very cinematic and there's something about imagining the dramatic end fight, followed by a tragedy that was always going to happen, the sadness and hope going into a fade out. And then the end credits roll just like your tears while this song plays.

...yes, I realise that was six songs, shh. Anyway, I hope you got an impression of the fic and its playlist :D

Hi! I just wanted to come and say thank you for reblogging your HP rec list yesterday because you linked to one of my all time favourite HP fics, Irresistible Poison. I just finished reading it again and I'm so happy to find that it held up to the test of time, it's absolutely amazing! I'm such a sucker for love potion (or similar) fics and it's such a perfect example of one. You catapulted me right back to being 13, discovering fanfic for the first time, which is why I was kind of surprised to find it held up so well. So again, thank you so much, and I can't wait to read the rest of your recs! 💜

hell yeah!!! irresistible poison was ALSO my first drarry fic when i was 13 years old all the way back in 2004-ish. i know i re-read it several times, but i don't think i've read it since i originally put together that rec list back in 2014. i'm so glad to hear you think it held up!! maybe i'll add it to my queue of fics to read over break

ALSO, we are so incredibly lucky, bc when i went through the reclist yesterday i discovered that fictionalley (where the original link directed) was shuttered down a few years ago, and i had to go digging through the internet for a complete copy of the fic! i found an abandoned version on ff.net that the author stopped updated around ch9 (they were already crossposting it to fictionalley AND a mailing list they shared with....none other than cassandra clare of fandom infamy and mortal instruments fame, so i can understand why they probably gave up on keeping up with ff.net) and almost linked to that instead before i realized that the word count was totally skewed.

i highly recommend all the fics on that reclist, so if you decide to read any others i hope you enjoy them!!

For better or for worse

2: What scene did you first put down?

So I pretty much write my fics from beginning to end, with little exception. This fic, however, was based on a prompt that @merihn wrote and graciously let me run with, and then massively got away from me (as all my best works do). So I did have a starting point to jump from, but yeah, start to finish is how I write.

6: What makes this fic special or different from all your other fics?

It was the first time I wrote demisexual Julie. I had written Reggie as demi in a previous fic, but this time I made them both demi and it was a really interesting feat, which I hopefully pulled off in a correct and sensitive manner. Also accidental marriage is not a trope I had written before but it definitely one of my faves to read!

11: What do you like best about this fic?

Honestly want to cop out and say everything? This is one of my most favourite fics that I've ever written. It had angst, pining, probably the best smut I've written, and of course, a happy ending. Plus this exchange:

"So where is this girl Reg?" Luke asked, looking around like he expected her to jump out from behind a couch. Reggie’s gaze, however, never left Julie’s. “She’s where she’s always been; right there in front of me.” 

I will NEVER top that for romance.
