Caitríona Balfe, Michael Stipe and more pay tribute to Sinéad O’Connor
On Wednesday, as the news of Sinéad O’Connor’s death broke, many celebrities took to social media to pay tribute to the music icon.
As reported by Irish broadcaster RTE earlier in the day, O’Connor’s death was confirmed by a family statement. No cause of death was immediately available.
“I hope you are at peace,” actor Caitríona Balfe wrote on her Instagram page, adding “and with your baby boy. Thank you for sharing your soul with us and soothing us with your incredible voice beautiful Sinéad.”
O’Connor contributed her vocals to the opening credits of Season 7 of acclaimed series “Outlander,” in which Balfe stars. The actor’s mention of O’Connor’s “baby boy” was in reference to the singer’s son Shane, who died by suicide at age 17 in 2022.
Michael Stipe, famed REM singer-songwriter, simply wrote on Instagram aongside a photo of him with O’Connor that “there are no words.” Stipe has spoken about how much he was influenced by O’Connor, telling the Washington Post in a 2020 interview that “so many people have lifted from her, from me to Miley Cyrus. She’s one of our great, living icons.”
Belinda Carlisle, lead vocalist of the all-girls 80s rock band The Go-Gos, wrote “may she find peace now. Forever loved,” on her Twitter page on Wednesday, while singer-songwriter Melissa Etheridge wrote on her page that news of O’Connor’s death “is such a tragedy.”
“What a loss. She was haunted all her life. What a talent,” Etheridge continued. “I remember my first Grammy show meeting this small shy Irish girl.”
The Cranberries – who lost their lead singer, the Irishwoman Dolores O’Riordan, in 2018 – shared a tribute on their official Instagram account, writing that they “are shocked and saddened to hear of Sinead’s sudden passing. We have all been big fans for many years. Our thoughts are with her family.”
Shirley Manson, lead singer of Garbage, posted in honor of O’Connor to the band’s Instagram page, writing, “I’m heartbroken.”
“This disgusting world broke her and kept on breaking her. Godspeed dear fragile dove,” the post continued. “Thank you for all the beauty and all the wise teachings you offered up to us. I wish you nothing but peace and I will love you for all of time.”
O’Connor’s contemporary Annie Lennox shared a poem in the late singer’s memory on her Instagram, beginning it with, “You bared your soul… | Shared your brilliance | Through exquisite artistry”.
Oscar-winner Jamie Lee Curtis penned a lengthy tribute to O’Connor on her Instagram page, saying, “I once heard Sìnead (sic) sing acapella in an empty chapel in Ireland. It was under construction at the private home of our host. It was one of the most beautiful things I’ve ever heard in my life.”
“I loved her. Her music. Her life,” Curtis added, going on to reminisce about the time she spent with O’Connor at a music festival.
“Sixth Sense” actor Toni Collette also shared a personal memory with O’Connor, writing on Instagram, “I was lucky enough to hang out with her a few times in my twenties. On one occasion we all sang in the hills of Wicklow in Eire. I sang a Jane Siberry song and Sinead then asked/encouraged me to sing one of my own. Can you imagine the terror? The intimidation? The thrill?!”
“She was so talented, so generous, humble, resilient, courageous and true,” Collette continued. “What a voice. What a force. My heart breaks.”
Beyond those in the arts, O’Connor’s impact was felt in her home country of Ireland.
“What Ireland has lost at such a relatively young age is one of our greatest and most gifted composers, songwriters and performers of recent decades, one who had a unique talent and extraordinary connection with her audience, all of whom held such love and warmth for her,” Irish president Michael D. Higgins said in a statement sent to CNN.
“May her spirit find the peace she sought in so many different ways,” his statement concluded.

I am a sucker for that overproduced and polished sound of music paired with some heavily processed auto-tuned vocals. I know EDM still exists, but I'm talking about within pop music. We have been in this era of "natural" and "authentic" sounding pop music for way too long. I wanna say that it started in like 2015 where artists started to sound more "natural". After 2020, music just got worst. It got more sentimental and sensitive, you can barely bop to anything anymore. I have not heard one song today that I can just have fun listening to. The music scene is oversaturated with natural and sentimental b.s. I just want club bangers and bops at this point. 2010 - 2013 was so iconic, I want THAT sound back. A perfect balance of EDM and pop. And if I do hear any dance pop or EDM music today, it doesn't have the same vibe at all. There are no catchy hooks and fun lyrics, it all sounds the same and repetitive. It just ends up being way too EDM, if that makes sense?The early 2010s had a perfect way of balancing EDM sounds with pop music. Balance is key, today's EDM feels so dead and generic. Early 2010s sprinkle of EDM into pop music was just something I feel like we'll never see again, songs that had amazing sounds, beats, and smooth to sing along with. Actually, there has been one song that caught my attention very recently, and it's Madison Beer's "Make You Mine", the song is def a bop. I love it. It definitely reminds me of something that would've been produced in 2010 - 2013, but still fits itself into today's music atmosphere as well. I miss 2011 Britney, Kesha, Rihanna, Calvin Harris, Katy Perry, Nicki Minaj, David Guetta, and 2013 Miley Cyrus. Nicki Minaj doesn't even acknowledge her 2010-2013 era anymore and it makes me so sad. That era happened to be her more "pop" sounding music at the time, and she seems ashamed to even acknowledge it anymore. It's sad cuz that's what MOST of her fans know her for. She won't even sing "Starships” anymore.

Natalia Trevino Amaro: When Fashion Meets Fanbase
When it comes to fashion and music, the synergetic relationship between the two has a long-running history. 23-year-old fashion designer Natalia Trevino Amaro bridges the two and the fashion needs of Taylor Swift fans awaiting to attend one of the dates of the singer’s The Eras Tour.
Owner of a brand named after herself, Natalia started her business in June of 2020 after graduating from the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City. As she was living with her parents in Indiana during the early stages of lockdown, Natalia found herself struggling with the lack of work opportunities available in her field at the time – “I figured I’d just start making clothes and selling them since I had nothing else to lose; fast forward almost three years later and it’s my full-time job.”
Now, alongside her own original designs, Natalia is selling custom pieces to Swifties (Taylor Swift fans). “Like a lot of other businesses, I was hit hard with inflation and had very little sales through the second half of 2022; I started making custom pieces for fans in December”. Knowing she’d be making her own custom outfit for Swift’s tour, Natalia documented the creative process and uploaded it to TikTok. “I was honestly looking for any sort of sale at this point because things weren’t looking great for me. Luckily the TikTok I made hit the right audience and I was able to take in custom orders!”.
Though making custom pieces for fans is “more of a one-time thing” for Natalia, she is open to making more custom outfits for people in the future, no matter the occasion. “If I had to choose another fanbase to make customs for, I’d love to do it for Harries! Harry Styles’ fans have a fun sense of style at concerts so it would be super fun to make outfits for that!”.
As previously mentioned, selling customs to Taylor Swift fans has brought exposure to Natalia’s original pieces: “My personal designs hadn’t been doing too well prior [to selling customs], so I’m okay with letting that fall behind for a couple of months as making custom orders for fans is the majority of my work right now”. This said, she is trying to find a healthy balance between the two, lowering the number of custom orders she is accepting to bring her original work back into the production mix – “I do want to make sure people remember that I’m, a fashion designer first, not just someone who will recreate other people’s looks.”
A self-proclaimed Swiftie “since the beginning”, Natalia assures to be 100% of a fan girl, which is “so fun because you get to connect with so many people who love the same music that you do which is really special”. “I’d say [Taylor Swift] is the artist I most fangirl over, but I also love Selena Gomez and Miley Cyrus, who I also feel I ‘grew up’ with”, whilst as of more recently she has also become a “huge Harry Styles fan”. Though fan culture hasn’t necessarily impacted her work in terms of style, “it has definitely helped get my creative juices flowing again after being in a creative rut for a couple of months.”
According to Natalia, fashion is crucial to the music industry: “Most artists are known not just for the music they put out, but for their entire ‘artist image’ […] Clothes speak for themselves and as much as a performance can be incredibly memorable, sometimes having that ‘reveal’ moment of wearing something show-stopping can really make it 10 times more memorable for years to come”. And of course, when she thinks ‘fashion icon’ in music, Natalia thinks of Lady Gaga – “I grew up seeing her wear so many ‘controversial’ outfits and pushing the boundaries of fashion; you never knew what she’d show up in. That really stayed with me and I still view her in that light”.

The single features an equally intense verse from rapper Grandmaster Caz. “Working with Grandmaster Caz was such an incredible experience,” Ru said about the collaboration process. “It made me feel validated as a creator that someone like him could feel the impact of the song.” “They laid the groundwork for something special and when I heard it I knew I had to be a part of the process,” Grandmaster Caz praised.
daddi ru, also known as Daryen Ru, is a Brooklyn-based, non-binary filmmaker who received acclaim for their 2019 short film DENIM, which starred transgender icon Jazz Jennings. The film was screened at film festivals worldwide and earned Ru a nomination for Best Short Film at the 2020 Downtown Urban Arts Festival, and was touted by publications like Dazed and GLAAD. Their musical journey started as a teen in New York, singing and playing guitar in parks. Much of their musical inspiration stems from Motown and 80s rock, with modern influences spanning from Miley Cyrus to Billie Eilish.
