I already talked a lot last year about how omori and omocat affected me as an artist, and how I'd decided I want art to be the thing I dedicate my life to (even though i pretty much already was, but, more officially). this year I managed to accomplish a lot of things I wanted to, the aubrey book that misa, hina and tsukiko helped me with, I made a dakimakura (albeit a mari one instead of sweetheart since omocat made that first...) I made it through a very serious health scare, and underwent major surgery which is something I have always been terrified of having to do... my idol liked one of my drawings though my impostor syndrome makes me have a hard time accepting that... the whole vtuber thing wasn't really on my new years resolutions list but I'm glad I did it. there have been a lot of rough patches to this year but overall I'm proud of myself, and I feel blessed with all of the important friends I've made that omori happened to lead me to. I was going to post my 2022 summary of art on my birthday but I'll leave that for the new year I think. 2023 has a lot of potential to be an even bigger year for me, so I'm going to keep trying my hardest and go even further beyond... thank you everyone who's been with me all this time, I never want to take your support for granted

You slammed your locker shut as you clenched your notebook with your free hand. The opposite hand was placed on the locker. You sighed. Lunch had already passed and you were down to the last class of the day. “Hey, Y/N!” A cheerful voice called from behind you. You stood up straight and turned around. No one was there. “Er… Down here…” The voice said again in a more quiet tone this time. You looked down.

“Not too bad.” You replied. “You?” “Exhausting!” Misa blurted out suddenly. “School is a lot of work…” She pouted.

You smiled to yourself, listening to Misa’s cute voice. You only had one thing in mind and that was her . Well… at least for the next four seconds. In which, the bell rang just before you entered your next class swiftly.

Misa also shared the same class as you and the both of you sat in close proximity to one another. The two of you shared Art class. It was a simple class that was mostly laid back. The teacher would go over a warm up; followed by a project that would be due the following week and you would set off to draw whatever you would like.

Once the warm up was finished, you shifted to your notebook and began mindlessly doodling. A small note made its way onto your desk. You looked up, noticing that Misa was pointing down towards the note with a cute smile on her face. You shook your head and grabbed the note off the desk. It was folded into a layer, so you unfolded it to read what was inside. ‘Busy after school?’ It read on a small piece of paper. You took your pencil into your hand and wrote on the paper back; handing it back to Misa informing her that you, in fact, were not busy at all and inquired that she joined you after school to escort her home.

Misa shot you a message instantly again. ‘I’d love that.’  

It wasn’t long before the day finally ended. The final bell rang and you found yourself being the last to leave the Art room. You were having trouble packing your notebook back into your full backpack before you eventually found a way to fit everything. Misa came up next to you, grabbing onto your arm and pulling you to the side. “Come on, Y/N. Could you be any slower??” You chuckled, shaking your head. “It’s not my fault our teachers pack loads of homework.”

“You are taking four APs, what do you expect?” “True…” Once you threw your backpack over your shoulder, Misa helped lead you out of the Art room with her hand locked with yours. She pulled you throughout the building until you were finally out in the sun. When you stepped outside, the bright light caught you off guard. You had felt like you had been in doors for days until you stepped outside. It wasn’t long before your eyes finally adjusted. 

You hadn’t even noticed that Misa had let go of your hand and she was now far ahead of you. “Y/N,” She called. “Let’s go!”

You jogged up to her until you were right next to her. She sighed. “The school day finally being over is a miracle.” “Oh yeah?” “Yeah…” She looked down at the pavement. “I may not be in all the smart classes like you are, but I do find most of the classes I have difficult.” “Like…?” “Well, math for one. I feel like math gives everyone issues!” You shrugged. “You wouldn’t be wrong. What makes it so difficult?” Misa looked up, now keeping her eyes in front of her. “Mostly the teacher explaining the stuff.” She said simply. “He totally has no idea what he is talking about.” You laughed. “It’s true!”

You threw your hands up in surrender. “Okay, okay. I believe you.”

Misa shook her head and your hands fell back down to her sides.

It was silent for a moment.

The both of you came across bumpy terrain, the sidewalk’s pavement was not leveled and most people would find themselves tripping over the cement (if they were not paying enough attention). You found yourself looking over to Misa occasionally to make sure that she was able to step over the needed parts of the pavement, so she would not fall flat onto the ground.

“What are you doing?” She finally asked. “Huh?” “You are watching the ground like it’s going to come alive and bite you.” You turned away, feeling your face flush with warmth. “No way.” “Yeah way-!” Misa cut herself off, you turned right as she tripped over a rather sharp, sticking up portion of the pavement. Your reactive instincts took over immediately and you bent one knee down, catching Misa in your arms as she was still partially standing. 

The two of you looked into each other's eyes for a good solid second. Her eyes flicked to your lips for a moment before they were shot back up to your own eyes again. You smiled smugly as you leaned in closer to her. You kissed her softly on the lips and she returned it. It was a swift, yet gentle kiss that left you… wanting more. You went back in for a second round, now your hand was on the back of your head as her own hand was placed on your chest. The kiss was deep and passionate. Her lips felt perfect for yours; they were soft, warm and… “Hey you crazy ass kids, get a room!” An older man shouted from his truck. He was just coming in from turning on the light until he saw you both. He scoffed as he floored the pedal to the gas and drove off in a hurry. His car made a skrrt as his vehicle got smaller off into the distance. You scratched the back of your head at the situation, looking down at Misa you noticed that her face was flushed red and she was smiling awkwardly.

It's funny. She's sure Misa would have gotten tired of her by now. 

They're not lovers, of course--Akemi is too female for Misa's metaphorical taste. (Luckily enough, not her physical one.) But they're intimate, and they talk, and they spend so much time together, and really, who wouldn't get a crush at that point?

("Aren't you all supposed to be bi eventually?" Akemi asks while she's bandaging up her bites. It's not that she needs to, really, but she figures she's been hurt her whole life and it'd be weird if she didn't have something to show it.

It's a fucked up stereotype, but she wants a chance.

Misa's eyes are blank in a way that Akemi never figured out how to get. She doesn't know if it's playing dumb. "Not really? I mean, I haven't really felt anything for a girl?")

She's never asked about the details of Misa's lover (because she can't really use the word "boyfriend" to describe something like that, can she?), and all she really knows is that they're good for each other. Even someone like her can see that.

("Are you going to drink that?"

It's weird to have someone just come up and ask that to you. She gets why. A little. She's just been holding her Shirley Temple and staring at the light pattern for ten minutes at that point.

"I paid for it, so yeah." I should after having to deal with my boss, she wants to say, but she's cut off when she sees exactly who she's talking to.

The girl is short and blonde and pretty, and maybe everyone's short to Akemi but she's very pretty, and she is clinging onto the arm of a slightly taller boy like he is her everything. Maybe he is.

"Haha, that's totally cool! You just don't really, like, look like you wanna?"

Akemi feels nice enough that day to not dump the drink on the girl's head. In fact, she feels nice enough to talk to her. And she just...never stopped.)

She can be jealous. She won't stake him (that kills anyone, she's pretty sure), but she can want him to die. She can want him to disappear. To no longer matter to either of them.

("What, does he know?" Akemi's bandages are off this time, and she's staring at some boring piece of wall art. Just some random flower vase. Why is it so important?

"That, like, you're here?" Misa is doing her eyeliner with a cell phone camera. She wipes some off her right eye, and Akemi thinks it'd make her look like a certain emoji if she stuck out her tongue.

"Yeah."

"It's part of the life. It's not like I tell him everything, silly!" Oh, and now she has stuck out her tongue.

"I wouldn't be surprised if you did." Akemi rubs the fading mark on her wrist. Give it a few more hours, and it won't be a problem.)

Really, the kind of person Misa is astonishes her. Akemi had taken her to be the type to discard people as long as they stopped being useful. That was what people like her were like, once they'd had enough. They wanted everything.

("Isn't it weird? Liking me at all?" She's lying on Misa's bed this time, scrolling through her phone in a vague attempt to figure out what place is best for a next heist. Old habits die hard.

"It's not like we're dating." Misa's voice comes from the closet. There's some joke there, but Akemi can't think of it.

"How old are you, anyway?"

"You're 20. It's not weird."

"Answer the question." Akemi gives a little huff. It doesn't work as well when they aren't face-to-face.

"What question?")

As far as Misa is concerned, they like each other in the same way close friends would. Probably closer than they should be, considering everything else. That's all.

("You don't, like, hate the dead thing?" Akemi has no idea why Misa bothers redoing her lipstick every single time. Shouldn't she have found something that doesn't smudge by now?

"You can still talk and stuff, you're fine."

Misa's lips look just like she's blowing a bubble, especially with the color. "That's new."

"Whatever. Money on the counter, like always?"

"Mm-hmm."

Akemi doesn't look back when she leaves. She never does, here.)

It's gonna stay there. That's the only way this can ever end well for anyone.

("Do you want more than this?" Misa lifts up her own wrist. Akemi wants to say yes.

More than you'll ever know. But not the way you want.

"I'm fine.")

is there anything especially interesting in the anime guidebook that you could share with us? :-]

I'm not sure what is most interesting here, so let me sum up what it is in the book! It's a pretty slim 160 pages.

It starts with some pretty barebones profiles of the characters, with the basic data points from HTR13 and few-line summaries.

Then it goes through every episode with screencaps of it and summaries. There might be a little commentary there that isn't just summary, but since I haven't read it properly... I am not sure.

Strewn in between are design arts of the various locations in the anime, which is probably my favourite part of the book. I will share those under the read more at the bottom!

This is followed by an interview with the voices of Light and L, and then another joint interview with the voices of Misa and Rem.

Then we get staff interviews with Tetsurou Araki (director), Toshiki Inoue (main writer) and Masaru Kitao (animation director).

Much shorter few-question Q&As with the voices of Mello, Near, Takada, Mikami, Soichiro, Sayu, Ryuk and... Jealous follow. Why Jealous?? I'm not sure.

There's also one-page interviews with the bands that performed the two opening themes: Nightmare and Maximum The Hormone.

Ohba and Obata also each get about a page of interview.

The book is then concluded with settei art for the characters and important objects. Nothing there is much of a revelation.

... so yeah, you'd have to read the text to see just how interesting this could possibly get, and I have yet to try and stumble through.

Review: Love & Other Natural Disasters

Summary: When Nozomi Nagai pictured the ideal summer romance, a fake one wasn’t what she had in mind.

That was before she met the perfect girl. Willow is gorgeous, glamorous, and…heartbroken? And when she enlists Nozomi to pose as her new girlfriend to make her ex jealous, Nozomi is a willing volunteer.

Because Nozomi has a master plan of her own: one to show Willow she’s better than a stand-in, and turn their fauxmance into something real. But as the lies pile up, it’s not long before Nozomi’s schemes take a turn toward disaster…and maybe a chance at love she didn’t plan for.

My Review: This book has ingredients that definitely appeal to me. There’s a meet cute, fake dating, humor, romance, and plenty of reasons to smile. Nozomi is a romantic and is really hoping to remake herself into someone interesting and sophisticated. It’s definitely hard to watch her as she lies and make some poor life choices in her effort to win a gorgeous girl. This leads to moments that made me want to scream, “Don’t do it!!”

Nozomi has a humorous way of telling a story and truly is a delight. Not everything is silliness and romance though. Of course there is relationship drama, but there is also family drama. Nozomi has had a rosy way of seeing the world and starts to discover some hard truths about her loved ones. She and her brother seem to be antagonistic, but she seems to share a lot with him and he clearly cares for her even while he taunts her. He is often helping her deal with everything she’s learning about their parents who are driving Nozomi up the wall for a variety of reasons. Her grandmother is also aging and is reluctant to accept changes that may be necessary soon which leads to a lot of conflict.

Speaking of conflict, there is also a matter of how to navigate family relationships when a loved one cannot accept all aspects of a loved one’s identify. Nozomi is not exactly hiding the fact that she is attracted to girls, but she is also hesitant to let one of her family members know because the person may respond in a way that is so hurtful that they may not be able to stay in relationship. This is such a difficult situation and Nozomi has a terrible time deciding how to proceed.

The new people Nozomi comes into contact with outside her family are each very interesting and though she seems absolutely certain about what and who she wants, over time everything gets jumbled. Of course this leads to miscommunication and all kinds of confusion. Readers have plenty to keep them entertained and wanting to know what will happen next as Nozomi learns about herself and how complicated love can be. Love might sound sweet and dreamy, but she has not really thought through how one goes about loving someone and what love may require of a person.

Recommendation: Get it soon especially if a quick rom-com with a peek into San Francisco and an art museum sound like fun.

Summary: Misa may be an up-and-coming Idol, but no one is immune to the unrelenting lure idolization can bring, not even a Shinigami.

“I can do anything I want with it, right?” Misa rested on bent knees and clung to the black notebook in her small hands, bouncing with excitement at the possibilities that were all of a sudden at her fingertips. Her eyes sparkled up at Rem, two tiny reflections of her bandaged visage looking back at her.

“Yes, as I told you when I gave it to you. You can use it however you like, but remember it came at a very high price. A Shinigami gave his life to save yours.”

Misa clutched Gelus’ Death Note to her chest, hanging her head sorrowfully, but true remorse couldn’t find its way to her. “Yes, he killed my attacker because he was in love with me and Shinigami can’t fall in love with humans.”

“That’s correct.” Rem’s low voice resonated in ghostly cadences.

“So if I wanted to kill a Shinigami, all I have to do is make them fall in love with me right?” She batted her eyes, huge and brown, framed in thick mascara painted lashes, a coy smile tugging at her ruby lips.

“Don’t try it. It won’t be that easy.” Rem’s words bordered on a warning, though she couldn’t help but stare at the young woman she was now bound to. Misa was the most beautiful thing she had ever seen, supple and warm with crimson life pumping throughout her small body. She was something Rem couldn’t deny wondering what it felt like. She was alive, made of flesh and blood stretched into curves that concealed a delicate skeletal frame.

She was something Rem could only imagine embodying. If she had ever been alive, she couldn’t recall such a time and now she was nothing more than animated dust and bones, left to inhabit a dry and baron world where a death goddess was the closest thing to life existing.

But as much as Rem found beauty in Misa’s form, admiring her was far safer than loving her…

“Oh, Rem. You knew?” Misa’s giggle rang airily, a joy that fell on ears so often bereft of hearing such melodies. “Don’t worry, Rem. I won’t kill you. Not on purpose anyway. Besides, you gave me something else to tell Kira when I meet him. I know how to kill a Shinigami.”

Rem’s golden catlike stare widened at Misa’s words. She had hoped that meeting Kira was no longer something she desired, but unfortunately it seemed to be the only thing the rising star wanted. The hollows of Rem’s chest ached. Though no heart beat within it, she was sure it was breaking. “You still plan on trying to meet him?”

“Of course, silly! I didn’t kill those people and make those tapes just for the fun of it. I want Kira and Misa always gets what she wants.” Hugging the notebook tightly, she flopped back onto her bed, blonde pigtails fanning around her angelic face as she sighed dreamily up at her ceiling. “I want to thank him for killing the man that took my family from me. I would do anything for Kira. Anything. The world is lucky to have someone like him looking out for it.”

“That’s one way to view him I suppose.” Rem had always been more interested in how humans die, but since she had met Misa, she was more concerned with how to keep such fragile creatures alive, especially when she so easily offered up half her life for the eyes…just to pursue a maybe.

“I hope he will let me help him, but if not, I will find a way to anyway.” Misa flipped to her stomach and propped herself up on her elbows, laying the Death Note open in front of her. She traced a black nail over the names she had written across the infinite pages and smiled. “Oh, Rem. Haven’t you ever idolized someone so much you would do anything to make them happy? Anything to protect them? Even die for them? Love…It would be a wonderful way to kill, wouldn’t it also be a wonderful way to die?”

“Yes, it would.”

Manga Review: Haunted House

Happy Halloween!

In honor of the spooky season I am here with a review of the one volume manga series, Haunted House.

Review

Haunted House is a comedy-horror manga created by Mitsukazu Mihara. This one volume manga consists of a series of seemingly disconnected chapters about a teenage boy named Sabato Obiga. Sabato, whose name has its roots in the word Sabbath, is a typical teenage boy. However, his family is anything but normal.

Sabato’s family embraces the Halloween and Gothic lolita aesthetic. His mother is the spitting image of Morticia Addams and his father looks like a steampunk, haunted house employee. Sabato’s twin, older sisters (Lisa and Misa) embrace Gothic lolita fashion with mirrored attire every chapter. Their home is setup like a haunted house and they each bathe in blood daily. Imagine them as The Addams Family crossed with The Munsters, only with slightly more bite.

Each chapter generally has the following setup:

Sabato meets a girl he likes.

Sabato goes on a date with the girl and it goes well.

Somehow, Sabato is forced into a situation where the girl meets his family.

Sabato’s family freaks out the girl.

Sabato mourns the fact that he will never find love.

Each chapter brings new issues for Sabato and new girls for him to pine over, as well as new, goth inspired ridiculousness from his family.

As the series progresses, we see that Sabato’s family truly loves him. They show concern that he is not embracing their aesthetic and worry that Sabato will have issues adapting to the world around him. They love him, even if the way they show it is odd and may seem off-putting to some. In that way, it’s reminiscent of Chibi Vampire, though again a comparison to The Munsters is apt, with Sabato playing the role of of a more self-aware Marilyn.

Summary

Haunted House is a repetitive, horror-comedy manga with a mix of good and bad. The art is very stylized and very 90s, though it matches well with the characters and story being told. However, due to it’s stylistic nature, it may be a turn off to some readers.

While there are some genuinely funny moments, overall the series becomes boring and uneventful as the plot resets every chapter. It’s not bad, per say, it’s just not good. If you are looking for a spooky, yet loving family, just stick with The Addams Family.

Overall Rating: C-

Art: B — Effective and matches well with the story/characters being presented. May be a turnoff to some readers.

Characters: B — The characters were enjoyable and well presented, albeit repetitive in their actions. The main character (Sabato) is bland, but that is intentional.

Humor: C — The series has it’s moments that are genuinely funny. Then there’s the other, repetitive moments.

Story: D — Overall what little plot was included was repetitive and boring.

Death Note Fanfic Writers! I bring you an AU!

I have a Death Note AU fanfic proposal. Light and L are video gamers/hackers. Simple. Light finds a glitch where he can search up any players name to find out things about them and can perminately kick them off the game, no matter what server, device or account they use. Light needs the code each user has and the username they put down. This is a problem for the makers of the game, which is obviously the task force and they ask L, a brilliant hacker to try and figure out what is going on. L confronts Light in the game to duel (basically a standard RPG) and when Light tries out that glitch, he finds that everything is literally a space. His username: “ “ Game code: “ “ Which infuriates Light and the battle is put as a draw. Now to make things interesting, both are at the same college, their dorms right next to each other. This way, they basically use the same restroom in the morning to brush their teeth and have classes and see each other ALL THE TIME. Only until later does L start to suspect the honor student neighbor of his, as they continually challenge each other and always end up in a draw. Dorms are rerouted where L and Light room together, causing all sorts of problems since they now suspect each other and both have to try and play without the other seeing. Misa is a gamer girl that can get information about the person in real life through a different glitch. Ryuk and Rem are the tutorials included with the glitch from some extra coding. Matsuda is L’s original roommate but has crushed a mouse, broke keys from the keyboard and even spilled sweet tea all over L’s computer once (keeping with the iconic ‘MATSUDA YOU IDIOT” line). Near and Mello are other rival players that decide to put their disputes away for a while to see what tf is going on with the players “ “ and “Kira.”  But this time, it ends when the programmers just completely shut off the game, as having this deadly glitch that logs people out is damaging to the game's popularity. L and Light never really felt satisfied so they end up playing board games with each other, becoming very close "friends" (With the completely no homo make out sessions occasionally). On their senior year, Light and L basically come around to telling one other that they had been fighting the whole time. At this point, they didn’t give two fucks, as they didn’t play the game because of the animation, music, plot or whatever, they played because they felt challenged for the first time when going against each other. Sow in LawLight throughout the whole fic and maybe a visit to Light’s house for dinner and L’s house just to show that L is still a rich bitch.

So tah-dah. I can write an idea, but not the actual fic. I can draw art for it and create comics, but for the entire thing? Nope..... I really want this to be a fic so please contact me if you’d like to discuss it or if you have other ideas. If your stuck, I’d be happy to talk it out. I just need to be blessed with a good writer that can do long (LIKE LONG BECAUSE THIS SUMMARY WAS NOT TO BE THIS WORD HEAVY, IMAGINE THE FIC) fics and enhance the gay in every way.
