The flowers of Camassia leichtlinii 'Semiplena' have been coming into flowers over the past few weeks. The upright stems have been described as resembling huge sparkler wands. This is an easy clump-forming, bulbous perennial to add to a border.

I came home from Share’s Plant Sale with some truly unusual geraniums with different shapes and colours in their variegated leaves, colours spreading like inks and gladdening my printmaker’s eye. These flowers have been watching over me at my desk while I work on the poems that I hope to have ready to share on the Open Day at the garden. I think I need to plan for all-and-any types of weather - it may be summer but even in June the days bring heat, humidity, rain, hail, sun and cloud, as if we are running through every season, sometimes in one long afternoon. If this holds true on 17th June, I might have to take cover in one of the polytunnels and drink in the glorious scent of sweet peas.

This amazing Paeonia cultivar was purchased from a market stall. It has grown and flowered wonderfully in the garden despite exposure to some cold winds which are not ideal for a tree peony.

The shrub roses are still providing a display, here Rosa 'Erfurt' (rose) has clusters of semi-double clear pink flowers with a white zone surrounding golden anthers. The flowers were filling the air with fragrance and will be followed by rounded green then orange-red fruits (hips). This reliable, repeat-flowering shrub has been available since 1939.

Even on a late autumn day the foliage Astelia chathamica 'Silver Shadow' (silver spear) was the star of several borders at Great Dixter, Sussex. This clump-forming perennial has dramatic silver foliage and needs a sheltered spot in a moist but well-drained, fertile soil in full sun or partial shade.

The strong horizontals of this planting combined with the changes in colour and texture provide winter interest. This is a large scale planting of the herbaceous perennial Hylotelephium (Herbstfreude Group) 'Herbstfreude' (stonecrop, sedum) and the ornamental grass Calamagrostis × acutiflora 'Karl Foerster' (feather reed-grass).
