"you said to submit birds that "have changed your *life*-- okay, maybe not that deep" but this bird has LEGITIMATELY CHANGED MY LIFE. i watched this video: [posted below] (please please please watch it it's a short animated film on John Sincock's experiences in Kauai with the Kauaʻi ʻōʻō) just as i was finishing Bill Bryson's 'A Short History of Nearly Everything', in which he chronicles the human impact on rate of human extinction--and especially birds, SINGLEHANDEDLY (or doublehandedly, since it was the combo of the animation and the book) kickstarting my obsession with extinct birds. I already really liked birds, but there's something just so tragically gorgeous about the extinct ones. I HAVE SO MANY THOUGHTS AND FEELINGS ABOUT THEM AND NONE OF THEM ARE COHERENT ENOUGH FOR WORDS."

Hey so I cried so much over this video and I already knew about the story of the Kaua'i O'o. Hawaiian birds are facing extinction at an alarming rate and really need all of the help they can get. Many other native bird species are struggling right now with habitat loss, invasive species, and mosquito borne illness threatening the last of their populations.

As for Kaua'i O'o, this is a bird we can never get back. There is no possible hope hiding on another island, because that's not how island birds work. The family this bird belongs to, Mohoidae or Hawaiian honeycreepers, is an entirely extinct family of birds, and the only avian family that has gone entirely extinct in modern times.

If the story of this bird impacts you, please hold that impact close to your heart. Fighting against habitat degradation is hard enough already, but it is possible to save what we have left.

This is the first short film I've ever made! It was an uni assignment done in the span of a week and I was the only one working on it.

Would you believe me if I said that the hardest part was translating the dialogues? I had to closely examine the ESP version of Super Paper Mario to know these character's way of speaking, plus adapt the dialogues so that the original intent and meaning was kept...... that shit is hard!!!!!! translators have my utmost respect lol

The second hardest thing was getting timing right because I did not have time to make an animatic. I really was just going with what felt right. I think I did a decent job at that...!

Something I really liked about the process was the pre-production phase because that's when I had to do the vectors for the characters! To be honest with you I felt like a caveman every time I learnt literally anything new about Illustrator........ is this how people feel when I tell them about Moho????

...Oh well!!! There's some things I'd def change of the animation but overall I'm seriously proud of this, and!!! and!!!

I've met Harrison "Jack" Smith, the one geologist that went to the Moon! (all other astronauts were test pilots)

I've become "IRL" friend with several fandom friends.

I have a PhD in Cosmochemistry (it's like geology applied to all solar system rocky bodies). As such, I've studied particles from the Wild 2 comet, brought by the Stardust mission.

I've walked on the Moho in Oman! (the Moho is the crust/mantle limit, which, most of the time is 30 km deep in the ground, but can exceptionally be brought to the surface by plate tectonic.)

The Westernest I've been is Hawaii. The Easternest is Japan.

I got tickets for the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris!

I've told Gabriel Byrne, Tim DeKay and Ioan Gruffudd how much they mean to me (Gabriel and Ioan probably don't remember me by now... At least Tim does <3 )

I have great parents and for that I'll be eternally grateful. Last example of my mom's awesomeness: she heard on the radio a doc about asexuality and she sent me the link, figuring out it would talk to me. We subsequently had a conversation about it. But like, it's not as much that I came out to my mom, as my mom figured me out.

A friend (see point 3 LOL) just invited me to a Bruce Springsteen concert tonight so... I guess I'm about to go see Springsteen on stage?!

Forefront 4 Birdsong

It's a wonderful look at the late field biologist John Sincock, especially his last encounter with Hawaii's now-extinct Kaua'i 'ō'ō ( Moho brackets) of the encounter animated work. The animator's artistry and aesthetic are very sophisticated, even if this is only her second-year film at CalArts. I love her postage-stamp-like style of pen drawing. She's always been very good with that.

She has also put out some tutorials on how she combines these things together beautifully, and I love the way she combines and discusses the Eastern and Western painting styles. It's a digital painting that combines a Western sketching relationship with an Eastern layered ink painting style. The relative feel of her use of ink brushes in this was new to me.

I was drawn to her style of drawing like early American movie posters, the combined use of materials, and the little thought that went into conceiving the story, and she suggested ending the film with the buzzing of mosquitoes. This is a small reference to the main factors that led to the extinction of ʻoʻō on Kauai. In the 1800s, mosquitoes were accidentally introduced to the Hawaiian Islands by ship. They brought with them avian malaria, a disease that many birds could not fight off. In this sense, island life is extremely fragile and human behaviour (intentional or not) can completely change the equation of the surrounding environment. I really like this form of buried eggs. This kind of iterative approach to sound effects is something I would like to learn. I will try to use more forms of using sound to convey information for my future projects.

Hola a todos esta vez cambiaremos un poco el tema de lo que nos hemos centrado ya que hemos hablado sobre la contaminación, datos curiosos y misteriosos información relevante etc. y los contare una historia muy interesante.

Sin amarre y sin tripulación

En 1872 un bergantín llamado Mary Celeste puso rumbo desde la ciudad de Nueva York a Génova, Italia, llevando a siete miembros de la tripulación, el capitán, su esposa y su hija de dos años. Un mes después, un barco británico vio el bergantín, que ya debería haber llegado a su destino, a la deriva en el Atlántico Norte, a cientos de kilómetros de tierra.

Cuando los miembros de su tripulación abordaron el Mary Celeste, encontraron semanas de comida, zapatos y otras pertenencias personales. Un desayuno sin terminar, probablemente el del niño, todavía estaba en la mesa del comedor, cubierto de moho. Para los marineros británicos que investigaron el Mary Celeste, era como si los que estuvieron a bordo hubieran abandonado el barco por completo. Sin embargo, a pesar de algunas salpicaduras de agua de mar en su bodega, el bergantín se consideró marinero.

THE OTHER SISTER (through my eyes)

As a student there is a lot of exposure to various aspects of the OT profession which can range from theory to application. The experience of watching a movie of this nature which I’ve never watched has impacted my understanding of OT profoundly. “The Other Sister” is a heartwarming film directed by Garry Marshall, offering a unique perspective on individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities which I have only been exposed to in this current semester. It provides valuable insight into those living with ID and how they live their lives, their struggles, and aspirations. About to follow are my reflections and lessons learnt from the field and how they have influenced my growth as an OT student.

"The Other Sister" shows Carla Tate, a young woman with a mild intellectual disability, and Daniel McMann, a young man facing similar challenges. Their characters highlight that people with disabilities have a wide range of abilities. Carla's determination to live independently, pursue education, and have a romantic relationship demonstrates the strengths and capabilities of individuals often misunderstood due to societal biases of those with disabilities. In OT, I've learned the importance of recognizing everyone's unique strengths, regardless of their disability. This movie emphasized that each person is special, and we shouldn't limit their potential based on preconceived ideas. It taught me to approach clients comprehensively, focusing on their strengths rather than weaknesses, and to tailor interventions accordingly.

Carla and Daniel strongly desire independence. They want to live on their own, make choices, and chase their dreams. As an OT student, I've learned how important it is to help clients, encourage independence and autonomy, regardless of their limitations. The movie highlights the significance of helping individuals with disabilities in developing life skills, social skills, and the ability to make choices. In my third year of OT, I've explored various theoretical frameworks like the Person-Environment-Occupation (PEO) model and the Model of Human Occupation (MOHO). These models stress the dynamic relationship between the person, their environment, and their meaningful occupations. The film reminded me that promoting independence isn't just about an individual's abilities but also about creating a supportive environment that enables and accommodates those abilities.

Carla's family, especially her mother, initially struggled with accepting Carla's desire for independence. But as time passed, they realized how important it was to let Carla lead her own life and make her own decisions. This part of the movie aligns with the idea of family-centeredness and collaboration in occupational therapy. This showed me the importance of involving family in interventions and allowing for open communication so there is understanding of not only the induvial but all dynamics that are impacted. Carla and Daniel's love story serves as the emotional core of the movie. It beautifully portrays the challenges and joys of their relationship, demonstrating that individuals with disabilities can have meaningful and fulfilling romantic lives. This confirmed the importance of addressing emotional and social needs as part of holistic intervention.

To end, "The Other Sister" has been a significant influence on my growth as an OT student. It has motivated me to challenge stereotypes, advocate for independence and autonomy, involve families and partners, and consider the emotional aspects of disability. The movie has motivated me to approach my future practice with empathy, compassion, and a dedication to enhancing the well-being and independence of all individuals, regardless of their abilities or disabilities. I will continue aiming to create a positive impact on the lives of those I serve.

Sarah llega a su casa de la infancia junto a su padre John y su tío Peter, la casa está para reformar: no tiene luz, línea de teléfono, cobertura y un trillón de problemas.

Llevan dos días limpiando y arreglando la casa ya que había sufrido que se colaran los okupas, ratas royendo los cables, y algo parecido al moho.

Sarah está recogiendo cuando oye ruidos en la casa, Peter ha ido a buscar al electricista, y su padre, que está recogiendo como ella, no da señales de estar en la casa. Su casa de la infancia está llena de puertas, habitaciones, armarios, etc por lo que Sarah se encuentra en su casa dando vueltas porque todas las puertas que dan al exterior están cerradas y las ventanas tapiadas por los okupas.

Sarah encuentra a John inconsciente en una habitación y vuelve a sentirse perseguida, tarda una eternidad en encontrar una llave y salir de la casa, da una vuelta gigante para acabar prácticamente en el mismo sitio (se supone que está huyendo). Su tío Peter aparece en el coche y le dice que vayan a buscar al padre a la casa (terrible idea).

Desde el principio del film hay una especie de tensión sexual entre Sarah y los dos hombres, un comportamiento sospechoso entre familiares ya que hay comentarios o miradas que hacen saltar las alarmas. Su padre tiene una polaroid con la que hace fotos de los desperfectos de la casa, y hay algo que hace click en la cabeza de Sarah.

Sarah tiene flashbacks de su infancia, esa casa abre una brecha en el cerebro de la chica, y empieza a recordar...

Animating dialogues - Learning

I kept all the shots with dialogues to be done at last because for these shots I had to first listen to each dialogue and then animate the lip sync accordingly. In this shot Zain is saying ‘Abu’ (father), I first analysed the mouth movement when we say this dialogue. First the lip open for ‘aaa’ sound and then they close for ‘aab’ then open up again making a hollow for ‘bu’. I first created the artwork for the mouth movement in photoshop and then exported them to moho for animation. I also did some research regarding animating the dialogues and found lots of helpful content that actually helped me throughout the process.

I followed these similar steps in other dialogue shots as well. Listening the dialogues again and again and analysing the sounds of each word and then breaking it into parts and then making mouth movement layers accroding to it. I started off with the easiest dialogue so that I can first learn this with an easier one and later start doing the complicated ones.
