Outsiders #1 by Jackson Lanzing, Collin Kelly and Robert Carey. Cover by Roger Cruz. Variant covers by (2) Dan Mora, (3) Christian Ward and (4) Cruz. Out in November.
"'Never the End.' A universe of secrets is about to come to light. Batman protects Gotham City from evil. Batman Inc. protects the rest of the known world. But what of the unknown world? What of the ancient evils in hidden tombs and forgotten tragedies from a magic-and-mad-science-fueled super-heroic century? Using his fortune, Luke Fox launches a new organization dedicated to shining light into the world’s darkest corners. His first recruit: Kate Kane, the Batwoman—who will re-embrace her military background to protect Luke’s dream and encounter every bit of strangeness the DCU has to offer. And just wait until you meet the Third Man… or learn what universe-shattering secret they’ve discovered buried under Antarctica. Outsiders is the return of comic book archaeology, digging into all the forgotten corners of DC’s history to preserve, record, and better understand the true nature of the DC Multiverse…and the forgotten stories that make up its fabric."

I was thinking "Man, I bet a lot of Locked Tomb fans would go nuts for Die," and then I realized I knew a bunch of comics I think fellow Muir fans would like. So here, have some of my personal faves.
Tumblr media
Bitch Planet, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Valentine De Landro
This one will probably never be completed, but the two existing volumes are absurdly good. It's about an off-world penal colony for non-compliant women. Brutal, angry, pulpy--and full of love and admiration for women who rebel.
Tumblr media
Die, Kieron Gillen, Stephanie Hans
Goth as hell, lovely, and extremely gender. All about the power of story, but story here is not inspirational. It is eldritch: amoral, all-powerful, and hungry.
Tumblr media
Love and Rockets, Jaime Hernandez, Gilbert Hernandez, Mario Hernandez
I'm particularly thinking of the Jaime stuff here--queer punks on bizarre adventures, loving and surviving in a shit-ass world.
Tumblr media
Monstress, Marjorie Liu, Sana Takeda
A terrifying and powerful lesbian on a quest for revenge has an elder god come out of her arm stump occasionally to kill people. Also, there is a cat who is a nekomancer. (Get it?)
Tumblr media
Once and Future, Kieron Gillen, Dan Mora, Tamra Bonvillain
There's a lot going on here thematically, but whatever. Just take a look at Bridgette, 80-something monster hunter with just the worst attitude you've ever heard of. See that old woman? You will absolutely want to fuck that old woman.
Tumblr media
Pretty Deadly, Kelly Sue DeConnick, Emma Rios
Ungh. The art. The deathiness. The art. Imagine if the Locked Tomb took its aesthetic cues from westerns, swap out necromancers for reapers, and you're pretty much there. Just a gorgeous series.
Tumblr media
The Sandman, Neil Gaiman, Sam Kieth, Mike Dringenberg
You have heard of Sandman. It is as good as you have heard. Shares with TLT an unflinching--but warm--look into the darkness.
Tumblr media
Tigress Queen, Allison Shaw
Buff warrior queen must enter the opulent city of the enemy empire to seek peace. Palace intrigue, diplomatic tensions, occasional fights. Everyone is very sexy.
Obligatory mention for the five of you who never put on gray bodypaint: Homestuck is interesting, but I do not recommend it because I do not think the comic itself is very good. Homestuck is a several-thousand page joke at the expense of the reader. It did not deserve the passionate, creative fandom it attracted.
It gets mentioned a lot as a TLT influence because Muir co-wrote a beloved fic (Promstuck), but she herself has said it's not any bigger an influence than a million other things she's read or played. There are some interesting overlaps, but many of those are because she's influenced by the same material Hussie is (notably parser games and jrpgs).
If you really want to read Homestuck, I recommend listening to Homestuck Made This World as you go.

My Favorite Comics of 2023
Sometimes I think I should review all the comics I read as I read them. Then I realize I read like...40 comics a month and decide to not do that. But I figured I could at least round up my favorite books of 2023!
So as not to bury the lede...
My Favorite Comic of 2023: Green Arrow
Was there ever any question? All I have ever wanted for like 20 years at this point is Arrowfamily shenanigans, and this book has been all about reassembling the gang and letting them romp through the DC universe. This is an Ollie who is overflowing with love and bad ideas, and that's perfect. Every character and relationship has gotten a chance to shine so far, and I can't wait until they bring the girls in. I especially love how clear it is that Roy is Williamson and Izaakse's favorite. ME TOO, GUYS, ME TOO. The fact that this is now an ongoing instead of a limited series is the best gift DC could have given me.
The rest of my faves...
Alan Scott: The Green Lantern: I did not expect to be as moved by this book as I am. The overall plot is a bit hard to follow, but that's not really the point of the comic. What blows me away every issue is how unflinching and occasionally brutal the book is in its portrayal of 1940s-era homophobia, including Alan's internalized self-hatred, and yet how simultaneously incredibly kind the book is. The love and validation, especially in #2 and #3, is so generous and beautiful. Also, it's the best and most beautiful I've ever see Cian Tormey's art look - he gives everything such a hazy, heartbreaking softness here. Please read this book.
Batman/Superman: World's Finest: This continues to be one of the most enjoyable books DC is putting out right now. Mora is one of those artists, like Doc Shaner, who draws the DC universe exactly 100% the way it looks in my hindbrain, and Waid is absolutely in his sweet spot of classic heroes, Silver Age lore, and extremely comic book-y adventure. Plus, Tamra Bonvillain is doing that thing she does with colors that taps directly into the happiness center of my brain - they are so rich and sunny and joyful.
Birds of Prey: I love everything Kelly Thompson writes and I'm so glad we finally have her at DC. She is the absolute perfect writer for this book, too - she gives such good superheroine. The banter! The action! The way she mixes and matches her cast in such fun combinations! Leonardo Romero's layouts are so kinetic and fun, and Jordie Bellaire's colors, YOU GUYS, JORDIE BELLAIRE'S FUNKY SEVENTIES COLORS! I can hear the soundtrack of this book. Love love love.
The Flash: To be clear, I mean the Jeremy Adams run that ended earlier this year with #800. I will forever be salty that DC canceled this delightful book, which was all of the action and humor and heart and love of continuity that I crave in comics, in favor of the so far completely mid Spurrier series. RIP Adams run, you were too good for this world.
Fire & Ice: Welcome to Smallville: This book got off to a slightly slow start, in my opinion, but every issue just gets better and better. It is so funny, and I want Natacha Bustos to design every outfit I ever wear for the rest of my life. Plus, Tamra Bonvillain is doing the color thing here, too! I want to live in her world.
Poison Ivy: I trust G. Willow Wilson with my life. This is such a good, complex, nuanced take on Ivy. (Also messy and poly and queer.) I have no idea where this story is going but I'm on this ride 'til the end.
And finally...
Favorite Backlist Title: Starman (1994): You guys. YOU GUYS. I mainlined all 80 issues of this series this year at an absolutely blistering pace because I did not want to stop reading it for even a single second. It's everything I love about comics: truly serialized storytelling with a huge cast and lots of intertwining subplots, tons of twists and foreshadowing that pay off in immensely satisfying ways, a deep dive into continuity that's still accessible to people who know almost nothing about Starman (me), a love letter to a fictionopolis, and one funky little dude trying his best at the center of it. I am BEGGING you to read Starman. Please.

Playing on Easy Mode:
More thoughts on titles and who has them, this time via writer rather than me playing with the titles, and using the known title changes due:
Chip Zdarsky – Batman, Nightwing
Ram V. – Detective Comics
Joshua Williamson – Superman, Batman & Robin
Tom Taylor – Nightwing, Titans, World’s Finest, Green Lantern
Phillip Kennedy Johnson – Action Comics, Green Lantern: War Journal
Simon Spurrier – the Flash, New Justice League Dark/Magic/Hellblazer book
Tom King – Wonder Woman, the Penguin
Tini Howard – Harley Quinn, Catwoman
G. Willow Wilson – Poison Ivy, Wonder Woman
Kelly Thompson – Birds of Prey
Jeremy Adams – Green Lantern, the Flash
Mark Waid – Shazam!, World’s Finest, Titans
Dan Mora – Shazam!
Geoff Johns – JSA (also Johns is leaving DC shortly)
Leah Williams – Power Girl
Josh Trujillo – Blue Beetle
James Tynion IV – The Joker: the Man Who Stopped Laughing (finishing next month), JSA
Matthew Rosenberg – WildC.A.T.S. (finishing next month), New Stormwatch/Checkmate/Suicide Squad
There’s also Brave and the Bold which is a straight anthology
Ignoring minis and maxis right now, that’s not a horrible spread. We’ve got 4 women with 5 titles between them (doing better than some other periods).
Playing on easy mode – allowed two reassignments without having to substitute, plus letting myself create two new titles for the two cancellations – I think I’m using this to straight out hand Wonder Woman to G. Willow Wilson and take her to two titles. I really want a woman on WW, and my other options are Howard, Thompson and Williams. I don’t want to shift Thompson from BoP until I get a better view of what she’s doing, I’m not sold on Howard as being the best choice of the four, and I have very little read on Leah Williams so far (apart from really disliking the pivot to ‘Paige’ ew)
I’m happy to leave Tom King on one title, given the spread of what everyone else has. In exchange please get DC to commission one of their fancy largely-out-of-continuity prestige maxis on *rolls dice* Maybe the Aquafam? They probably need some devoted love where King can dig in and do good work that nobody else will care about.
I still dunno who to give Nightwing to. God Dick just needs someone who loves him and who wants to write him with an edge for a while, but the options available are a mess. So gave him to Waid in that Waid won’t hurt him, though part of me is still interested in Spurrier, or even Trujillo (not that I think anyone would give Trujillo two titles and I want him on Blue Beetle) Reconsidered: putting Zdarsky on Nightwing to give me Dick & Tim & Barbara stories, I’m a genius. He probably needs to lose Batman then but I dunno who picks it up, wildcard bring someone in for it. I’m nominating Mariko Tamaki or Alyssa Wong. Alternatively give it to Kelly Thompson, I am going to increase the percentage of books written by non-men one title at a time.

✧ ˚ · –– TIME TO LISTEN TO THE MUSIC...
listen up, little bites. the more we've seen of your music taste, the more we're looking to kick up some more agency parties and events to hear more of the sick beats you're into and get to have you dj! thanks to all of you that have shared your music with us. to say we're obsessed is an understatement.
enough dilly-dallying, though, clickbites is fashionably late as usual and we know you've been awaiting this game. turn on your media asks and turn the anon feature on if you haven't yet. all of these playlists are for in character knowledge and the music and questions you answer are usable for gossip blog purposes.
all you need to do in this evening's activities is like this post to let us know you're online and engage with the following muse playlists by sending their respective user enquiries, anon or not, about their songs, lyrics, etc. all you have to do is send them a question related to their playlist, an individual song in it or perhaps a lyric that stood out to you and it's up to our lovely little bites to reveal to us exactly what the thought behind that was. who's this playlist about and why did you decide to make one for them? what were your thoughts when including the song jolene by dolly parton? how does listening to goofy goober rock by spongebob make you feel? what memory with this person does my heart will go on by celine dion bring up for you? what does the lyric "that's what makes you beautiful" in what makes you beautiful by one direction mean to you with this person? we wanna know, darlings. so, go on and do our dirty work to get the most tea... below are the playlists you need to look at and engage with, and the masterlist if you need a who's who refresher. if we missed you or if you decide you want to participate after the game starts, feel free to send us a link to your playlist and we'll make sure to get you added to the list asap to participate.
get your askbox ready, set, and go on, creep.

Arranjo vocal: Kelly S. Rodrigues. Preparador vocal: Charles A. L. Cardoso. Guitarras: Leandro Silva de Oliveira. Bateria: Renan Andrade Martins. Violão: Mattheus Felipe do Nascimento Lacerda. Baixo: Denis Silva. Teclados: Lucas Gatte Bertolozo.
