I was setting up my queue for tomorrow and had some thoughts about the Rafa/Liv scenes at the end of last season but decided I didn't wanna put them in the tags of that particular gifset and force op to see them so I'm gonna dump it here:

"when you're done feeling betrayed me" is such a toxic, passive aggressive line sksksks like if someone I cared about ever invalidated my feelings like that, ever said "when you're done feeling x" like I was being irrational for having emotions, I would quite simply never speak to them again. I love Rafa actually and I love his and Liv's relationship so much and I'm not even mad that they're fighting bc I love mess and that shit is delicious but oh my god. A serious faultline appeared in the dialogue last season where more than once characters I think we were supposed to feel sympathy for actually said some pretty fucked up shit, and it just felt to me like getting a glimpse into the writers' psyches and not in a good way. Like I don't think I'm supposed to be angry with Rafa after these scenes, I don't think the intention was to make him sound like the worst kind of jealous controlling boyfriend, I think they wanted me to feel sympathy for him, but the words they made him say - words I think they thought were fine - left such a bad taste in my mouth. It is the most dismissive, stereotypically chauvinist sort of thing to say, and that's not Rafa.

Okay I do get your point that Schitt’s Creek is a rip-off of Arrested Development but personally I’m a fan of both shows and find them both to be entertaining in their own ways although yeah Arrested Development is definitely the OG and way funnier (probably my favourite comedy of all time). I usually watch Schitt’s Creek with my family because we all like it so I kind of associate it with bonding with my family so there’s a sentimental attachment there although I get why you don’t like it. To me the show Friends is quite literally just Seinfeld but without everything that makes Seinfeld funny so therefore Friends is just sort of unwatchable to me so I guess I kind of get how you feel about Schitt’s Creek even through I’m a fan of both Schitt’s Creek and Arrested Development?? I feel like I worded this strangely and came off as a bit passive aggressive lmao.

ehhhh i don't really think friends ever tried to be seinfeld, even if they are both shows about a group of white friends in their 20s/30s living in new york. i do agree that seinfeld is funnier, but i think the goal of friends was to be more of a comfort show than anything else, and unlike the seinfeld characters, you were meant to like the friends, and you rooted for them to get happy endings. i also think friends always relied more of the comedic timing of the actors as opposed to the writing - so much of friends works solely because of how good david schwimmer, matthew perry, and lisa kudrow are at comedic acting. plus it focused more on the ensemble aspect than seinfeld ever did imo. different style of humour to seinfeld but that doesn't necessarily mean it's not good.

unfortunately, schitt’s creek did not get that message, and it tries so hard to be funny but just...fails in my mind. and i think it was a far more obvious copy of AD than friends ever was of seinfeld: wealthy family loses everything except for one piece of property, are forced to get along and deal with the sudden change in circumstances. schitt's creek just feels like a watered down and dumber version of AD, and the cast constantly felt like they were overacting. and like, yeah, not everyone is going to be will arnett or david cross or jessica walter, but SC just gave me so much second hand embarrassment. friends didn't always have the best writing but the cast usually made it work, whereas whenever a SC cast member gets nominated for something i feel as if i'm being gaslit, because...in what world. and i usually love overacting - riverdale is my favourite show - but SC was just cringey to watch.

also, unpopular(?) opinion, but i don't particularly care for sitcoms that feel preachy. the fun of arrested development were that the bluth family were self centered assholes with absolutely no self awareness. even if the writing remained good, i wouldn't want it to be about how They All Become Better People, because i WANT to laugh at rich assholes! characters shouldn't remain stagnant, but man. at least do it like community where the study group did grow and change as people, but it resulted in them becoming codependent and shitty to everyone outside the group. you loved the characters and wanted what was best for them, but you'd still despise them irl. SC is just so focused on niceness and ~making everyone likeable~ that it just falls to the same fate as mike schur shows: a preachy, dull piece of work that ultimately just feels like the writers having a superiority complex.

anyway lol this is a very long response given your ask but comedy tv is my passion and i just will never understand how so many people think SC is as funny as it is. but hey, everyone is allowed to find different things funny! i just like to complain whenever the most unfunny gifsets of all time pop up on my dash. maybe if that gay guy said I’M MAKING FAJITAS the way david schwimmer did then i would care.

✦ i’m proship & a multishipper, so i am very ship and let ship, basically. i use the word ship to mean “relationship dynamic that you find compelling or interesting” as opposed to “relationship dynamic that you find healthy” or “relationship dynamic that you choose to emulate.” me saying i ship something just means i’m interested in exploring it through fiction, or reading about it, or whatever. like, i ship derena, but i am obsessed with what makes them so incompatible. i write fic about them breaking up all the time.

✦ i don’t care what people ship as long as they’re aware what is and isn’t acceptable behaviour in real life, and treat people around them with respect, basically. shipping something doesn’t equal to endorsing it in real life. nah, i will not debate this – i know it’s a dealbreaker for some, in which case, the unfollow button is right there.

✦ i am pretty critical of this show and of the characters i love, but (especially with characters like jenny and vanessa, who the fandom loves to hate) i don’t complain uniformly about characters. do not assume that i’m endorsing something awful they’ve done just because i’ve never spoken about it.

✦ also keep in mind that i’ve watched the entire show only once, so some things might have gone over my head and/or i might’ve forgotten certain things. if you’d like to bring this to my attention, please be polite, but feel free to. if i interpreted an episode or character differently, i might just agree to disagree, but i’m always open to conversation.

✦ so far i haven’t gotten any asks on this, and i’d like to keep it that way, so. do not involve me in any sort of LGBT discourse. if i wanted that, i’d run a discourse blog. i firmly maintain that people’s genders and sexualities are nobody’s business but their own.

Hiii! So, like. I saw you ranting about Good Omens on Twitter and I enoyed reading it lol, so I was wondering what were your thoughts on the differences between Crowley and Aziraphale's personalities in the show vs the book?

(okay so, apparently just TOUCHING an ask to read it gets it actually posted? oh well. the tumbrl app sure is Something. sorry about that!)

first of all, thank you! i'm glad you liked my incoherent shouting on twitter, you might get more of that sooner or later because i'm in the middle of a Good Omens reread and, unsurprisingly, i have Opinions.

so, my thoughts. as you MAY HAVE GUESSED from aforementioned incoherent shouting, there are some things i liked about the show and a lot of things i... did not. i am staunchly in the 'The Book Was Better' camp, which i know is an unpopular opinion, given that even longtime fans of the book seem to generally love the adaptation. which is cool! lord knows if we don't deserve something nice to watch, and if someone liked the show or actually prefers how the show handled some things, good for them. i just really liked many aspect of the book that i feel the show mishandled, or changed, or directly cut out... so there.

with the disclaimer out of the way: i feel that, in general, show!Aziraphale&Crowley were somewhat oversimplified, like flattened versions of the original characters. part of it it's just the nature of adaptations - you can't have every detail of a third person pov narration in a tv show, you have to... well, adapt, choose what to keep and what to lose - but part of it isn't, and i just... i'm baffled, mostly.

the book establishes fairly early on that Crowley just likes people ("It was a major failing in a demon.") while the show is... not really consistent on that point. tv!Crowley likes human STUFF just fine, is shown a couple of times to be distressed about children (although then he turns around and suggests to straigh up murder an eleven years old, holy shit, that's why i say the show is inconsistent) but for the most part... doesn't look all that attached to humans per se? considering also that in the book, Crowley (along with Aziraphale) is ready to sacrifice himself in a suicide mission against Satan to save all the humans they put in danger with their "messing people around".

(the big finale in the show is a fucking mess so i'm not even gonna touch that.)

book!Crowley, under the general demonic tendencies and the attempts to be a proper flash bastard, is a gentle soul that resuscitates doves and didn't know about the Spanish Inquisition until he got a commendation for it, and then HAD TO GET DRUNK FOR A WEEK TO COPE. not just that, he knows that about himself (and is obviously embarrassed about it) while tv!Crowley seems to... be in denial? when Aziraphale says that he always knew that, deep down, Crowley was a nice person, tv!Crowley pins him to the wall shouting that no he's not YOU TAKE IT BACK, while in the book: "All right, all right," Crowley snapped. "Tell the whole blessed world, why don't you?"

he knows he's too nice, it's just not proper for a demon.

(btw i would have LOVED to see book!Crowley's flat in the show, because it’s another detail that cracks that stereotipical demon image: "spacious, white, elegantly furnished, and with that designer unlived-in look that only comes from not being lived in." the flat in the show is very... goth and dramatic, which is fine, but i think the white designer flat tells a lot about Crowley's persona. he doesn't want to look demonic, he wants to look like a cool human.)

tv!Aziraphale, on the other hand, is... well, soft. too soft. book!Aziraphale is a passive-aggressive, at times insufferable cryptobastard, a ruthless pragmatist-at-heart who makes the fucking mob disappear, accidentally posseses a tele-preacher and candidly tells his audience that Heaven doesn't care about righteous people and everyone is just gonna die in the Rapture (oh how i missed that scene) and decides BY HIMSELF that the Antichrist Must Be Killed.

furthermore, tv!Aziraphale is much more naive and trusting than his book counterpart. there's that gifset going 'round with that "the demon who still has faith and the angel who's losing his" (i'll link it when i see it again) that is perfectly on point for the show, but also highlights the differences between book and adaptation. the book doesn't really talk about faith (also, faith in Pratchett is A Whole Other Thing that i don't want to get into right now) and Aziraphale&Crowley's actions are not really a matter of faith or lack thereof. they just want to save the world because they LIKE IT (and free will is contagious). at the same time, both of them know perfectly well how their respective sides really are. i just can't stand tv!Aziraphale’s bubbly naive trust in Heaven when in the book you have bits like:

"My people are more than happy for it to happen, you know. It's what it's all about, you see. The great final test. Flaming swords, the Four Horsemen, seas of blood, the whole tedious business." [Aziraphale] shrugged.[this is at, like, PAGE 25]

"You'll be amazed at the kind of things they can do to you, down there," [Crowley] said."I imagine they're very similar to the sort of things they can do to one up there," said Aziraphale."Come off it. Your lot get ineffable mercy," said Crowley sourly."Yes? Did you ever visit Gomorrah?""Sure," said the demon. "There was this great little tavern where you could get these terrific fermented date-palm cocktails with nutmeg and crushed lemongrass-""I meant afterwards.""Oh."

the thing with the show, i think, is that they wanted to give more space to Aziraphale&Crowley (who are, admittedly, the most well-liked part of the book, so it makes sense) and in doing so pushed a bit in a corner the human cast. the problem is that, in the book, A&C are utterly useless and the humans are the ones who bring forth the plot and above all the fucking themes of the story - free will, responsibility, what it means to be human, etc - so what did they do? they had to make A&C's dynamic all about free will and (dis)obedience and what not, and to do so had to change the characters a bit.

and it kind of works, too, for the show. it's just that, for me, the book worked better.

someone said i was a jimin anti because i didnt have an issue with a gifset being made of jimin agreeing that’s he’d be the least to survive in a deserted island because he needs someone to take care of him.

and they were mad and a lot of other things but THE MOST LAUGHABLE PART is them saying that jimin having the highest athletic ability out of all the members “obviously rubs me the wrong way” and everyone “should know why.”

As I've said before, I have no problem whatsoever if people reblog my Jalec stuff as parabatai or friendship or whatever. If it's a simple episode gifset or scene recap, it's entirely up to interpretation anyway. And yes, I'm well aware that they're not romantically involved in canon, but I do ship them so I'm gonna tag all my Jalec posts with my OTP tag even if the scene itself may not be shippy.

(Plus, I've more often than not seen posts by anti shippers whining about how they "found out they reblogged from a Jalec shipper and how that was the most horrible thing ever" - actual thing I've seen with my own two eyes - so I want to be upfront about the fact that I do ship them LIKE THAT so people know who they reblog from, and they can choose not to do it if they're so inclined.)

As for my edits, while my personal motivation behind making them is certainly shippy/romantic, I do think that for many or most of them, a non-romantic interpretation is entirely valid if you take the special nature of the parabatai bond into account. (There are exceptions to that, a couple of them really can't be seen as anyting but romantic in nature and if you choose to ignore that you're really just wilfully ignorant, but as a general rule, that's how I see it).

HOWEVER. If you reblog my stuff and feel the need to add passive-aggressive tags like "THEY'RE BROTHERS!!!!!!!" or "don't ship them guys", I'm gonna block you. Simple as that.
