Regretfully, I had to leave all my books behind. I couldn’t bear to make the choice between my beloveds, so I left them all.   Give them back. Give us back our beds. Give us back our offices. And give us back our books.

"My dear life, I’m still searching, little by little, for shelter, or what they call a “tent.” And in the midst of searching for hope for this human soul, all forms of humanity are falling away from us. Yet humanity is within us. And inside us, there is a dignity we can choose—this is how we were raised. But everything has fallen. We have been forced out, and what they call “displacement” is another lie and another atrocity. And all that we left behind—our homes, and the smell of our rooms, and the sounds of our walls, and the talk of our neighbors, and the birds of sunrise, and the rooster of dawn—this is not displacement, but the breaking up of hearts.
No one can hasten or delay their own death. But we hustle in the queues for the bathroom, for water, for the distribution of aid—we must hustle for the crumbs of life. I write, and my mind fills with good memories—how our lives used to begin at midnight. And now, our lives begin at the cusp of dawn and end at the last grave to the unknown martyr—why?
He is someone who was martyred, but among those who know him, he is the one who has gone and never returned. He is the one whom his son is waiting for, or one awaited by his father or sweetheart. But he has gone and has not returned. He is the one fate and the moon will weep for. His family will live boxed inside doubt, asking even the dust if it has seen him passing by. No, he is not unknown, he is the furthest thing from that. He is his family’s great calamity, he is the bitterness of loss, the hope of his father, and the companion of the Prophet."

HUMAN SOUPS
Tumblr media
I made some changes after reading @jesterpunk 's descriptions of the soups human counterparts. I'd also like to add a few notes and changes!
Jester mentioned that Nabil is disabled (he's a griffin and was born without wings), and I didn't know what to do for this originally. I thought of having him born without an arm, but I eventually went with giving him a wheelchair. He is unable to use his legs, but he makes the best of it! (I have no clue how to draw wheelchairs I'm so sorry)
I had Sookie do the sign for "I love you", in American Sign Language, since it's mentioned she is non verbal
Jester has two different socks. That's all I wanted to say
There's nothing in Mawie's hand! What're you on about---

Here's a scenario I can up with! And this was drawn by @redscorpiocat
D (don't mind the fact that Kyle says "Neko!" Because in this case, that's not my main OC. That's my anon/IRL self) is making pancakes, waffles, and french toast with a side of drinks for the cat fusions. While cooking, D decides to pass the time and play the Nintendo Switch with the game "Hyrule Warriors Definitive Edition" in it and let the food cook. But she got too distracted and, well, you can probably guess what happens next. Kyle, Taylor's younger brother is trying to alert D, but she has headphones on, so she can't hear.it
Question is how will the fusions involving Neko, Nala, and Clara that we got on the bed (so far) react and will they try to alert her? Like, which fusion(s) will go up to her or something?
P.S. It was so hard for me to decide which Switch game I would be playing in this scenario!
D!!! SHE CAN'T HEAR US BECAUSE SHE HAS HER AIR PODS IN!!! (IK they aren't airpods, just a joke, lol)
Nalix: *snaps their fingers aggressively in front of D to get her attention* Hey Hey!-
Kaneko: *Their eyes are wide, as they were anxious* U-Um, D....? D....? *They jump up in their viral glitch* D!!!!
Princess Nillacream: *waves her hand politely in front of D's field of sight* Excuse me, but, er... I believe you need to check your kitchen..
Andrés: *politely lifts up one of D's headphones before leaning in* Kyle is setting the kitchen on fire
Noel: *taps D's shoulder to get her attention* Hey, so.... Kyle, right? He could use help.
Paradox: *rudely rips off D's headphones. Their body shakes violently as Nala is internally scolding Bls and Bo all the while, causing them to stutter as they shouted* Hey, airhead!!! Your mo-moron friend will s-set this place a blaze!!!
Idris: *tugs at D's sleeve to get her attention* Heya Misth, Kyle needs serious supervision.
Stella: *shaking in nervousness. They tug at D's shirt ever so slightly* M-Miss D, you might want to check on Kyle.
Nabil: *bends over so D could catch a glimpse of their face. In case it didn't look like D saw them, Nabil softly laid a hand on D's switch* I don't want to interrupt your game, but it looks like that kid over there needs you.
[That's everyone so far, right?]

(Y/N)’s POV
Another day, another mission. I wasn’t usually this tired and bored to go on missions, but I was tired of having a mission every single day these past few years. Nettie’s decision to send me to every mission wasn’t unjustified; after all, I was her best fighter and a gifted vampire, so having me on every mission guaranteed that mission's success.
But I became tired of working almost every day for the past 3000 years, all because of Aro. When he left and took Didyme, Sulpicia, Marcus, Caius, and Athenadora with him, Nettie did not care enough to stop them. She said that no matter how much Aro tries, he would never be able to surpass the power the Greek Coven held.
Nettie was a good leader, a great leader even, but she underestimated Aro’s evilness by a lot. Within the next few eons, Aro had managed to establish his own new coven outside of Greece, in Italy, from where he started to expand his power and influence. So, what Nettie did in response was to collect as many talented vampires as she could herself.
Without anyone really noticing, Nettie had managed to create a sort of vampire network, where she would collect vampires, or humans-to-be-turned-into-vampires, from a variety of countries, mainly focusing on the Balkan, Arabic, and African countries, as they seemed to have a better and closer understanding to the Greek culture and way of thinking than the Western countries did.
Many vampires came and went - they were actually killed off, but we currently had 50 vampires, including Nettie herself, who were part of the coven for a few centuries already. It had always been difficult to maintain our “somewhat anonymity” and work behind the scenes without Aro’s new coven noticing us.
There was always the constant fear that they would come after us, trying to “recruit” our vampires or even myself, which Nettie wouldn’t even think of; she didn’t want to lose me to Aro. My gift made me precious to her and an important part of the coven. My ability to manipulate someone’s actions, thoughts, and memories was not just useful. It was plain dangerous in the wrong hands.
It took me centuries to train myself, not only to develop my gift but also to train myself morally. Most vampires don’t have morals or moral codes, that’s true, but I had to push myself not to take advantage of my gift and manipulate someone in vain. Nettie respected my decision to not use my gift for everyday “inconveniences” that could easily be solved by fighting or torturing someone, and I thanked her for that.
That was why I only recognized her as my leader. I wasn’t one to obey others, nor was I ever willing to follow someone’s orders, but Nettie had proved that she cared about each and every one of us, and her leadership skills were extraordinary. She combined a strong personality with a strong emotional intelligence, which was why she managed to keep the coven strong and in a position of (hidden) power all these millennia.
Though more than half of the coven was gifted - each of us in our own way, nobody ever dared to overturn Nettie. She was the connecting link between us, and she kept everyone in order. There were many vampires around who wished for Nettie’s position, but we knew that if her role was ever compromised, we would go against anyone who dared to question her authority.
Our loyalty lay with Nettie, and we made sure everyone stayed loyal to her. Whenever there was anyone who seemed suspicious, it would first be Kerime the one to identify them. Kerime could read someone’s aura, so she could warn us if anyone came to us with malice in their intentions or not. Nabil would then read their mind, and, if necessary, Tatiana, Kerime’s mate, would be the one to manipulate their emotions to force them to open up.
Alexandros would paralyze them; Dima would use his biokinesis power to control their body; Zuzanka would cause them incredible fear - I didn’t even want to know what she was showing them; Vera would force them to see whatever she wanted them to see. In the case they still attacked, Radmir would be the one to force them to stay back, causing them terrible discomfort and sickness.
I was the last solution, the most effective, but still the last, just as I wished. In the case anyone was rendered too dangerous for the coven, I would step in and manipulate their minds, deleting thoughts and memories, and forcing new ones according to my liking. I was working mostly alongside Cyriaque, who was Zuzanka’s mate and had the ability to hypnotize others.
Nettie had paired us up based on our powers, as she wished for the best outcome in each case. I had difficulty working with others all of a sudden, working alone for about 3000 years. But, over time, I realized that working alongside others meant the work I had to get done with was minimized, and the responsibilities were shared among many people, though I still was in charge of others.
I was third in command, after Nettie and Zenobia, though I was the one who was the most active and involved in the missions of the three of us. I was the one to train the new vampires as they came to our coven, physically and in terms of developing their powers.
However, I was never one to crave the kind of power and authority Nettie had over us. At the end of the day, I was satisfied with my role in the coven, as I didn’t have to worry as much about keeping everyone in order as Nettie had.
I had a fun life when I wasn’t going on missions. I was either going shopping, having sex, or going on vacation. I liked dressing up or down; experimenting with new trends and technologies. Humans could be fun in general. When I wanted to go out in public, I always took Vera with me, so her illusions would hide our true identity.
When it came to feeding ourselves, we would either go on our own or have some vampires within the coven who were responsible for bringing us food. They were usually grouped in pairs - one of the non-gifted vampires along with one of the gifted ones, so they would each help in their own way. I was never asked to fetch food for anyone because each of them owed me more than I owed them.
Centuries and millennia would go by like this, hiding away from other covens; hiding our identities; avoiding crossing paths with the Volturi or other vampires who may have been associated with them. It wasn’t that we were scared of the Volturi, but we didn’t know a lot about them, only what we heard from others who would pass through our territory. We never made it known that we owned that territory because we knew that, one way or another, Aro would eventually find out, and we wanted to avoid conflict, their patriarchy against our matriarchy.
All I knew was that I hated Aro with a passion. He was a hypocrite, an evil, wicked, and dishonorable person. He took advantage of Nettie’s kindness and acceptance, and when he saw that he couldn’t force others to follow him, he took the ones he brought into the coven himself and left.
Nettie helped him, Didyme, and Marcus develop their gifts, and they still chose to leave her, though I knew that Marcus had no choice but to follow Didyme, who was forced to leave with Aro because she loved her brother too much. Sulpicia followed Aro because he was her mate, and Caius and Athenadora followed him because they wanted the power he was promising them.
Aro thought he could rule the whole world, and we let him think that way until he started expanding to other countries, taking more and more vampires for his coven. About two centuries after he left, he found Chelsea - then Charmion, a sweet-looking girl from Thebes, which was part of our territory. He took her to Italy and changed her into a vampire, making her his coven’s most useful and important asset, literally the link that connected all Volturi vampires to Aro.
There was also Demetri, who was taken by Amun, while he was still human. Nettie, already having her eyes all over Greece for potential members for the coven, confronted Amun as he was about to leave for Egypt with Demetri. Nettie didn’t know the potential Demetri could have, though Ilija with his gift of presentience warned her about the future if she let Demetri go. Amun offered Kerime as an exchange for Demetri, and Nettie accepted as she wanted more women in the coven.
I had never met Demetri myself; only Nettie, Zenobia, Cyriaque, and Nabil, who could read minds, were allowed to go on that mission. Back then, I thought that I was lucky I was spared this mission because it would mean more work for me. But, thinking about it afterward, I kept thinking that I could force Amun to give us Demetri and any useful vampire he had. However, I also knew that Amun’s coven was destroyed from the ground up, and he could use a useful vampire or two.
Besides, we had too many vampires for a coven’s standards, even back then. However, after finding out that Aro started collecting more and more vampires, Nettie saw it as a kind of challenge to collect vampires herself. She was lucky, in a way, to have collected so many gifted vampires as more than half of the coven consisted of gifted vampires over non-gifted ones.
For Nettie, every gift was useful and she viewed every coven member as equal between us. While others would estimate which gift was useful and which wasn’t, Nettie didn’t care because “every person and every gift had a potential for greatness”, as she would say.
For example, Selene who could control animals came useful when it came to using them instead of other vampires or people, as nobody could ever suspect that an animal would work for us. In a similar sense, Sergei, who could shapeshift into anything he wanted, whether that was an animal or an object, went beyond suspicion in such cases. Miri, who had the gift of psychometry and could read the history of an object just by touching it, could tell us whatever happened around an object if at least one person came in contact with that item.
Such gifts would go unnoticed or not be used properly if there was no Nettie. Nettie gave everyone the chance to develop and use their gifts and feel useful within the coven. It was why we cared about contributing to the coven as much as we could. It was why I kept helping wherever and whenever I could, even though I was sometimes getting too bored to do anything.
We didn’t get to experience too many exciting things in our lives, and when we did, there were over soon. Things like fighting strong vampires who would be a challenge for us, or getting to know someone new - just things that would cure our boredom and make us feel like there were more to our endless life than hiding and just surviving. We still stayed in the coven, despite the boredom because we felt like we fit in, and anything other than being in this coven would just not do for us.
We had created a sort of family here, and we felt close and trusting of each other. We didn’t rely on someone keeping all of us together and submissive to Nettie, like Chelsea did to keep all the Volturi together and submissive to Aro. We stayed because we wanted to; we stayed because we felt appreciated and needed. Whoever didn’t want to stay did not deserve to stay and they were quickly discarded, though I had always offered to just erase their memories instead of killing them off.
And life would pass by relatively quietly, until the day we came across the Volturi.

Dur-Dur Band Int. - The Berlin Session - return (after decades) of a top Somali band
The first studio album of its kind since the golden days of Mogadishu came to a halt three decades ago. Glamorous discos and beachfront stages disappeared as the city was bombed to the ground. Like a sleeping giant patiently awaiting its revival, we can finally hear a new recording by the living representatives of that distinct era so far heard only on reissues. This record captures the historic reunion which took place in 2019 in Germany’s capital. London-based Dur-Dur Band Int. - itself an eight-piece powerhouse of Somali live-music - is backing three legendary singers. Sounding equally Asian as it does African, a definitive proto-Reggae groove channels the titans as they devotedly draw the bridge between the sorrow of all that was lost and the delight of a magic which survived. So Why Did We Have To Wait So Long To Hear This Album? By the end of the 1980s, Somalia’s capital (Xamar as the locals call it) was dancing its final dance. The musicians strived to keep it up as the country fell apart, but when the war eventually entered the capital, exile was inevitable. The national theatre was a battleground and the hotels became the backdrops for destruction, many remaining in ruin to this very day. Dur-Dur Band for example was then active in the 90s in nearby Addis Abeba, yet most of the scene was eventually dispersed over 4 continents. For a decade, Mogadishu’s veteran musicians remained dormant. For Xabiib, the glamour of stardom and Gucci had been replaced with an occasional wedding - singing alongside a backing track. In 2003, a fund-raiser was held in London for the reconstruction of Hargeisa’s National Theater which had been bombed to the ground during the war. Somali singers, actors and comedians from all over the diaspora were invited. A new Kooxda was formed around Dur-Dur’s founding member Abdillahi Cujeeri - calling itself Dur-Dur Band Int. Yet for the last twenty years they’ve been performing mostly within the Somali community. In 2015 Berlin-based Nicolas “Çaykh” Sheikholeslami was enticed by Somali music. Little did he know that his mixtape Au Revoir, Mogadishu Vol. 1 - Songs From Before The War would end up sparking a massive international interest in Somali music. Soon he was approached by Ostinato Records with the idea to create a legit compilation featuring those sounds. Thus, Sheikholeslami went on to co-curate ‘Sweet As Broken Dates: Lost Somali Tapes from the Horn of Africa’ which received a Grammy nomination in 2018. Berlin’s prestigious HKW took notice and granted him an opportunity to put together a concert with artists from the golden era. Luckily for us, Nicolas sensed the chance for a recording session to be arranged - and that is how we got this album.

Dutch drug kingpin Ridouan Taghi received a life sentence on Tuesday over a series of murders committed by his gang that shocked the Netherlands. Prosecutors called the alleged campaign of assassinations a "well-oiled killing machine."
Taghi, 46, is the alleged mastermind of the Amsterdam-based group called the "Mocro-maffia" that is thought to be one of the Netherlands' largest cocaine distributors.
Security around the trial has been extremely tight with judges and prosecutors asking not to be identified. At least three people directly connected to the mega six-year trial have been killed.
"We are sentencing all 17 suspects. Ridouan Taghi gets life in prison," said a judge at the Amsterdam District Court.
Taghi was the "undisputed leader" of what the judge called a "murder organization."
"He decided who would be killed and he spared no one," said the judge, whose face was not shown on a television feed. "The amount of suffering Taghi caused to the victims and their loved ones is barely imaginable."
Sixteen other suspects were handed sentences ranging between life and one year and nine months.
Taghi's sentence can be reviewed after 25 years, but it did not mean he was automatically eligible for parole, public prosecutors told AFP. Taghi was not present in the courtroom.
A lawyer for another suspect, named Said R., said his client would appeal a life sentence.
Taghi allegedly ordered a string of "liquidations"
Once the Netherlands' most-wanted fugitive, Taghi was arrested in Dubai in 2019.
The BBC reported at the time that Taghi was detained entering Dubai on a fake ID and held under an international arrest warrant on suspicion of multiple murders and drug running. Described by police as one of the world's "most dangerous men," he was suspected of ordering a string of "liquidations", including the murder of lawyer Derk Wiersum. Taghi was believed to have been living in Dubai with his wife and six children, the BBC reported.
Despite being held at an ultra-secure prison, prosecutors say he continued pulling the strings, sending secret messages to henchmen on the outside.
Heavily-armed police on Tuesday threw a ring of steel around the courthouse nicknamed "The Bunker," on the outskirts of Amsterdam.
Officers armed with automatic rifles and wearing face masks to protect their identities were guarding the court, while drones and a police helicopter circled overhead, AFP correspondents saw.
Taghi and 16 other accused did not face charges for the three murders that occurred during their trial.
They faced six other counts of murder and attempted murder — including ordering some 13 hits — carried out between 2015 and 2017, mainly against people suspected of becoming police informants.
On Tuesday, Taghi was convicted on five murder counts, including on a man called Hakim Changachi, who was gunned down in Utrecht in 2017 in what prosecutors say was a case of mistaken identity.
"Taghi was responsible for the mistake," said the judge.
"You will always have to look over your shoulder"
Shortly afterwards police made a breakthrough in the case, when one of the suspected gang members, "Nabil B.," handed himself over and agreed to become the prosecution's main witness.
A new wave of violence followed after Nabil B. turned state witness, leaving three people dead in scenes that shocked the nation.
Nabil B.'s brother was murdered in 2018, his lawyer Derk Wiersum was shot dead outside his house in 2019, and the prominent Dutch crime journalist Peter R. de Vries was killed in 2021.
De Vries acted as Nabil B.'s confidant at the time of his murder and had said before he was on Taghi's hit list.
The judge said the Nabil B.'s testimony led to convictions in five murders that otherwise would not have been solved.
But after handing him a reduced sentence, the presiding judge added that he "will have to live with the reality that you will always have to look over your shoulder."
Taghi's gang was nicknamed the "Mocro-maffia" because its members are mainly of Moroccan and Antillean origin.
Taghi has denied all charges, and has said money spent on a "sham trial could rather have gone to employing more teachers and police and healthcare."
None of the suspects made any statements during the trial, which was delayed by several dramatic developments.
Taghi's lawyer Inez Weski was arrested in April last year, with prosecutors accusing her of passing messages between her client and the outside world.
New lawyers were appointed for Taghi, but they too have since resigned.
The prosecution's case consisted of more than 800 pages with evidence not only from Nabil B., but also conversations from encrypted telephones called "Pretty Good Privacy" (PGP) phones, often favored by criminal organizations.
"We would like to take a moment to remember the three people murdered during the hearings," the judge said on Tuesday. "All of this has given this trial a pitch-black edge."
Dutch MPs hailed the conviction, with far-right politician Geert Wilders' -- whose PVV party won last year's elections -- saying on social media, "it's a beautiful day for the Netherlands."
In November 2022, law enforcement authorities in six different countries joined forces to take down a "super cartel" of drugs traffickers controlling about one third of the cocaine trade in Europe. An anonymous Europol source told AFP that a "big fish" Dutch suspect with alleged links to Taghi was among those detained.
