#naga! Doyle AU
Naga! Doyle AU masterpost
because the original is four years old, I'm back in the building again, and I will die on this hill.
tw: human experimentation, mentions of violence
In this AU Epsilon and his people are more into the cryptid field of work than they already are. This AU kind of stems from the fact that they wanted to be able to have Kur in their corner as a well trained, well contained asset, which expanded into 'how can we use cryptids as assets' but they start building their own cryptids, honey island style. During the season 1 timeline in this AU the Greymen have been doing their own cryptid research and using the efficiency for gene splicing/cloning they have to try and make cryptid human hybrids. The aim of which being supersoldiers that are more intelligent/able to follow instructions whilst not being as succeptible to Kur's control.
(Kur has not been revealed yet, so they want to beat everyone to the punch and have their own controllable cryptid army that can be used for a range of means, including taking down Kur.)
However all of the test subjects die, with particularly heavy losses in the Naga-human hybrid line they are attempting to create. However after recovering some of the research from Honey Island and some of the blueprints for Munya in Weird World's remains (in the cases that this AU starts post season 2) they have a stable working formula. They lure in a new batch of test subject (choosing criminals they lure in with cash or snatch off the street as there is less concern for them going MIA).
One of said test subjects is Doyle (both because I like to creaturify my blorbos and I'm addicted to the 'people who physically lose their humanity are supported by their loving family' trope). He ends up the sole survivor of these experiments due to his previous exposure to the naga relic/dark mysticism, which allowed his DNA to mesh better with those of the unwilling naga/serpent cryptid donors.
The fam find out what is going on when either he escapes on his own after tearing through wherever he's being kept, or Francis turns on Epsilon and leaks the project files to Zak, who along with Wadi and Ulraj work to shut down the whole thing.
From there the AU becomes a mix of angst and fluff as the family have to adapt to living with a giant serpent man, who is dangerous at first but then just becomes a moody freeloading serpent that causes the Saturday's food and electricity bills to skyrocket. Even though he calms down enough to act like regular Doyle again, he still has a lot of naga-like habits, such as staring a little too hard at prey animals and becoming lethargic when his room is one degree too cold.
He ends up with a bunch of abilities, including being able to 'talk' to snakes/serpent cryptids, being extremely sensitive to vibrations and being able to see in infra-red slightly.
Also in cases where Zak still has his powers, he can communicate with Doyle the same way he does with other cryptids, and can control him to an extent as long as he's willing. However on an angsty note, when Doyle is still acting dangerous and instinctive, everyone finds it bizarre that Zak is the only one he will listen to, respect. They find out that this is because he is recognising Zak as Kur instead of his nephew, which breaks Zak's heart because we know how much canon Zak wants his cryptid family not to feel controlled/used in any shape or form 🥺.
May upload the oneshot collection I have for this AU onto AO3

Made this from reading about the Naga Doyle AU and imagining him like this. I do not own Secret Saturdays or the AU, thistle-bone-and-sharp-stones was the one who came up with the AU.
If they want me to tear it down I will. I hope you like it

A while ago I had made up a Zak for each day of the week to match Zak Saturday and Monday for fun, and because I wanted to give Zak some more AU similar to how Ben gets a lot of them. So not only do they all have different last names, but each have their own backstories and colour theming! So I hope you enjoy my little AU concepts.
-Zak Saturday-
Classic original Zak. I decided to draw them all when they're 11, start of the series vibes. So that's why he doesn't look like the ways I normally draw him currently, since those are when he's 14. Nothing different with his design here, beyond still giving him those vivid orange eyes.
-Zak Sunday-
Also known as Zak Argost, having been taken in by the man after he had a certain encounter with Zak's parents, resulting in their deaths. When Argost found the young toddler, seeing the start of Zak's power, he was happy enough to take the child with him and use his powers to his benefit. Due to being taken when he was very young, Zak doesn't remember his parents at all, fully believing in anything Argost tells him, the only family he has. So he happily helps his guardian in keeping cryptids tamed during Weird World shows, or during trips to learn about them, even if Argost puts Zak in more danger than he should. Due to his appearances on Weird World, Zak is a celebrity of sorts, even if he doesn't get to go out often. Argost also gives him a lot of gifts, keeping the child in a positive mood to keep him under his thumb. So Zak truly believes that Argost cares about him.
Though things start to turn when Argost finally decides it's time to hunt down Kur and take his powers, hiring Van Rook and Doyle on the mission. This leads to Zak and Doyle getting to know each other, with Doyle feeling protective over this random kid for some reason. Eventually this leads to him taking Zak away when this whole Kur business gets out of hand. While Doyle can't seem to convince Zak that Argost doesn't care about him, the pair do at least agree to try and find Kur first, Zak worried that even Argost shouldn't handle such powers. However, only time will tell if the pair discover the truth behind their unknown family history.
-Zak Monday-
The good old twisted gremlin of a child, Zak Monday and his family were a result of the smoke mirror. They come from a world that twists the very nature of people, a poor reflection of their negative aspects. If you're naive, then your mirror self is incredible dumb. If you're a bit of a perfectionist, then your mirror self is a control freak. And Zak Monday represents the twisted doubts of Zak feeling like a monster, so why have any doubts when you can be the monster?
I decided to change Zak Monday a bit to have the green eyes and green shirt with his own logo, cause I liked the idea that after his first appearance, they switch back to what they're suppose to look like. But other than that I kept the concept of him looking just like Zak, minus the inverted hair colour.
-Zak Tuesday-
The young naga is the son of Rani Nagi. Born solely to have Kur's soul enter and be a host, but whoops! Looks like Kur's memories aren't there, but that wasn't going to stop Rani Nagi, who thinks if she keeps at her plans, eventually her son will become the old cryptid king she once knew. Even going as far as to solely call her child Kur, who secretly calls himself Zak due to him often watching humans in the shadow, curious about them and wanting a name for himself. Zak Tuesday has a lot of identity issues, not helped by his mother's teachings towards him, ignoring all his dreams and personal thoughts. Eventually he just got really good at lying rather than convincing Rani Nagi.
However, the young cryptid prince is suddenly kidnapped by Argost one day, as he figured out where Kur's soul was currently living. Zak knew he would have died that day if not for Drew and Doc recusing him, having been chasing Argost over this Kur situation. Though they're a little surprise that upon meeting the new Kur, they find it's just a young naga who really doesn't know who he is. At first Doc and Drew didn't know what to do with him, but Zak begged them to not send him back home, and let him stay at their place until he could figure things out. He wasn't foolish, he knew the nagas were planning a war, and he wasn't keen on being the face of it all. So now the Tuesdays just have a snake living around the house, but they can't exactly complain as he is a well mannered guest at least. And perhaps the house doesn't feel so lonely with him around either.
-Zak Wednesday-
Some of you might recognize this one, but this Zak is from my old Zur AU, where Kur was reborn via the Kur Stone due to it being an egg, and Zak is a dragon that shapes between human form and dragon form. I decided to update him, making him Zak Wednesday now, with a pink theme! I also decided that instead of Kur being reborn, I wanted to shake things up a bit and have it that Zak was directly Kur's son. His mother is unknown, and as Kur saw how the world was at the time, he put Zak's egg into a stasis situation until it was discovered again. After saving it from Argost, the egg hatched among the secret scientist, leading to them chasing the child of Kur. But upon using his shapeshifting abilities to look like a child of Drew and Doc, they just couldn't help but adopt him on the spot, siting there was no sense in blaming Kur's son over what happened years ago.
The growing dragon is very playful with a cheeky personality. He exhibits a lot of draconic behaviors, with a wild and free spirit. He is aware of his family history, but he doesn't like to think about it, unsure in how to view his father based on the stories he's heard. Besides, Doc and Drew are his parents, and that's all that matter to him. Though perhaps this sudden appearance by Argost, claiming he was going to far Zak's father, has been a bit rattling to deal with.
-Zak Thursday-
When Kur knew he was going to die, and also knew his soul wasn't able to live the mortal realm, he made plans to make it so his reborn self would both be born in hopefully a better time, and be without his memories. It was better that way, so that his new self could live a lovely life without the sins from his past. But that didn't exactly pan out properly, as Kur was reborn and sadly remembers everything. It took him a while to understand this growing up, his young human mind not processing it until he was roughly 7-8, and even then he needed time to think about it. And now he's a depressed 11 year old who now has to be stuck with the fact his plan didn't work, unable to run away from the person he once was. Doc and Drew found out the truth when Zak tried running away one day, their son sitting them down and telling them the truth in hopes they'd just leave him, it would be better that way. But to his surprise they disagreed, as he was still their son, Kur or Zak, and it would be too dangerous to leave him alone.
So now Zak lives with his parents? Are they really his parents? The family keeping this dark secret to themself, even from the other scientists. Doc and Drew still reach out to their son, doing their best to connect with him, but he can't help but push them away. He doesn't deserve this, and they deserve better. However, their secret might come out after Argost stole the Kur Stone and now hunts for Kur, not realizing the truth right in front of him. So now the family tries to get the stones back, wanting to protecting Zak/Kur from others finding out. Doesn't help that he has to go through being a child again with such dark memories lingering in his head, feeling tired and overwhelmed with the world. Hasn't he suffered enough?
-Zak Friday -
In a world where Kur and cryptids successfully wiped out humans, the king ruled the lands for a while after, before one day he mysteriously vanished. Many concluded that he had died somehow, the details unknown, but this lead to a prophecy that one day their king would return, leading to many claiming to be him, or praying that they will be him for the power and wealth. In this universe, Zak and his family are all cryptids, with Zak being a a Chuvash Dragon, Drew and Doyle are Epimeliads, and Doc is a Gargoyle (Other characters are also cryptids in this timeline). Zak is a serpent like dragon that breathes fire, as a very twistable body, and can freely shapeshift. He's heard about the legend of Kur returning, but frankly he thinks they don't need him, even if the cryptid world has been shattered without a king for years now.
But when a yeti named Argost claims that Kur is back, being backed up by the Nagas, everyone starts to gossip and run around trying to figure out who the new Kur is. So maybe it's best that Zak doesn't tell the whole world about his sudden new powers to control and communicate any fellow cryptid is walks by.

Ok but I absolutely love the kur family au yet all I can think of is memes like Doyle @ argost "had it not been for the laws of this land I would have slaughtered you." Or Rani Nagi "Kur comes in different flavors, which do we pick." Or even better when the Naga invasion happens and they wonder why every human that's tried to fight them has kur powers
hjGHJHBDJHBDFGBDHGDFKG [rani nagi voice] hes kur, his moms kur, his dad is kur hsi UNCLE is kur, are there any more KURS i should KNOW ABOUT,,,, [the mondays show up]

Could we get some headcanons/more background on Abbey and Doyle’s kids? 🥺👉👈 I love the premise of this AU
Tumblr media
YEEEEE (im just gonna ramble a bunch about the backstory i have so far but ill put it in bullets so its easier to follow lol i apologize for it being long as fuck-)
OKAY SO,,, first of all,,, doyle and abbey timeline,,,, [i am looking respectfully]
in this au, they get back together and have a sort of ‘lovers pretending to be enemies’ chaotic on again/off again hookup thing off to the side just between the two of them thru like Most of the final season, they try to keep it a secret (especially doyle who doubts the saturdays would be hAPPY if he was seeing her again) but in the end, saturdays ofc find out, probably are unsure about it at first, but she gains enough of their trust to be there for the big finale battle in the weird world mansion.
when shit goes down and argost becomes the vessel for the two opposing kurs (regular kur, and the anti kur from zak monday) and they like. explode his matter or w/e, i imagine instead of kur just completely disappearing, the ‘anti kur’ gets shot back to its universe, while original kur gets forced into a new vessel in this universe... the closest of which happens to be the unborn child abbeys unknowingly carrying. basically, what if the two kurs just LOOKED like they evaporated but actually did what happens when you try to like tape two same sides of a magnets together and they YEETED-
So thats how we have Parker, their firstborn daughter! and this... also implies ‘Parker Monday’ exists which. 8^) i havent thought about yet so forgive me on that but hoo,
they dont know parker is kur, they got no idea and rly just assume kur is gone for good. but after they find out abbeys pregnant (which is a huge emotional trip for both of them in its own right) they do eventually sort of agree they dont want their kid exposed to that whole world of mystery. like, ik its a vital thing to the whole family, and ik these two people were probably voted least likely to ‘settle down’ in high school, but i cant imagine they didnt escape the kur/zak situation without a LOT of trauma, so while the saturdays stay in the cryptozoology field, doyle and abbey slowly pull away from the mystery and mercenary stuff, and also instead of going for big dollar lifestyle settle with ‘independently wealthy’ parenting.
also, neither of them really . grasp the concept that theyve even started a family, and are ‘together’, and that this is REAL, until around when she gets pregnant with their second daughter, Kendall. and then theyre like. oh nooo wait are we actually like boyfriend and girlfriend EWW-
when kendall is born parker is 3, and the next like 10+ years are pretty smooth sailing. as far as what the kids know/see, they probably know the cryptids when theyre little but. (tw animal death sORRY TO BE DARK I JUST??????) idk,, how long komodo dragons live/how old komodo already is and i definitely dont know Anything about giant prehistoric birds and am not even sure if science knows that lifespan, so. im not sure how long they could really be in each others lives??? i almost imagine parker would have memories of them that she assumes she remembers wrong, like “oh yeah they used to have a lizard and a bird... my imaginative little kid brain thought they were a komodo dragon and a dinosaur”, and as for fisk im still working on it but i . actually kind of imagine he might have a much longer lifespan (since lemurians are like ancient or w/e? and also if hes by dna like a gorilla cat or w/e gorillas at least live long af) and also feel like once he got older and settled down a bit he might live somewhere in the woods, maybe even his old tree? and the saturdays see him ALL the time obviously, but hey zaks gotta go to college eventually, a gorilla cats gotta eat bugs in forest, we all have to grow up and leave the nest sometime,
so idk the last time parker has actually seen fisk and she might assume he was an imaginary friend or smth but, 1. if i do write a fic they absolutely have to meet again, 2. overall the vibe is they know the saturdays are cryptozoologists, like, the same way josh gates does destination truth, seeking answers and studying, they dont really. know that theyre REAL. to them its like, a hypothetical science. (this is also part of why they dont realize parker is kur, she isnt around cryptids and therefore whenever her powers would actually show up they wouldnt be recognized) anyways parker isnt embarrassed or put off by it but just thinks its a little wacky, meanwhile kendall is obsessed with the world of mystery/paranormal/cryptic lol
speaking of the girls personalities;;;
parker is like. not really normie/preppy, even if she seems it at first glance, shes nice and has a good head on her shoulders but also is a teenage girl (inherently unhinged) and shes THEIR teenage girl (+5 feral) so despite her success and charm shes also very witty/crass when she wants to be, and deep down shes closer to the kind of person that would on pure inexplicable instinct put something random in your mouth when you’re yawning so you bite down on it afterwards. or like. that video of the girl singing in the bathroom while her friends curl their hair and she grabs the curler to use as a microphone before realizing its burning hot??? shes. the voice of reason, but the voice is usually shrieking in fear, making a cursed joke, or half the time whatever shes saying is actually smart. she kinda wants to go to college and travel, but struggles with indecisiveness and anxiety, so she has no idea where to go, what to major in, etc. and is again kinda just livin thru the typical teen life in that regard
kendall on the other hand is like. weird kid culture, the kind of kid that believes they are secretly a new supernatural creature each year (mermaid phase, werewolf phase, alien phase, etc), probably completely accidentally starts cults or witch covens at school (didnt realize teaching peers how to become ‘blood brothers’ and ‘make potions’ from puddles and stolen school supplies would be taken so seriously by parents) , very into emo/scene/punk/alt culture but not rly in an overtly dark/edgy way, more of a having fun and expressing self way. she wants answers for everything, really loves mysteries and being open minded, and definitely a rebel/adventurer at heart, even if she gets naive or in over her head sometimes.
the girls get along well! parker is not dismissive of kendall she just. isnt really into the same stuff/is more freaked out by it most of the time, but she would tag along on certain adventures, especially if it was to keep her safe. and kendall definitely directs gentle mockery towards parker a lot but does see her as a good role model and guiding figure, their bond is really strong!
other details !
doyle and abbey prob decide to say fuck it and get married after kendall is born, they probably have a few rough patches but nothing is more important to them than the kids now and in the end they understand each other better than anyone else so . canon tension idk her! family ftw! power couple! they intimidate the teacher during parent teacher conferences together hand in shady little hand !
their parenting style is exactly what one would imagine, 70% fun and sass and controlled chaos where theyre the bigger children than their children, 15% ‘this is how you hack the government and dual wield swords-- i was not supposed to teach you that im sorry’, and 15% actual guidance / emotional depth / etc. flaws might be overcoming their own immaturity for the first few years, and then being lowkey overly protective (while claiming they arent, but just bc you semi jokingly tell parker she should join the football team doesnt mean you dont actually hide 60% of ur life from her and check that her bedroom windows are locked every night and have 24 people listed in her school emergency contacts and used to cut up her food till she was 7 and-)
so abouT THE BABY BOY (Phoenix), 1. his middle name is leonidas bc im gay and i love emotional turmoil babes , 2. fully unironically the idea behind such a late pregnancy is abbey would be mid fourties when hes born right. so like. [has two kids] ‘ok birth control time’ [when theyre teens many years later] ‘ok im old enough to stop taking this’ [the hyperfertility curse that plagues many women rears its ugly head with one last hoo-rah]
and finALLY a very quick elevator pitch of what id write an actual fic to focus on;;; kendall sneaks into the attic to look for old shit bc they BOTH know their parents have been hiding stuff over the years, she finds things like a cryptopedia (now offline), the claw, maybe even a piece of the kur stone, and ropes parker into the long haul of figuring out what all this stuff is. and ofc the second they ever find the naga relic and parker comes face to face with it, [rest in rip] time for mom and dad to find out and all this kur shit to start ALL over again-

👀👀 I just read your nagaverse fic exert and holyy shit dude. That’s actually horrifying in the best way. Legit nightmare fuel. Does he at least remember the fam when they encounter him for the first time? Or is his brain too snake-ified for that? I’m guessing that he does eventually remember them if he doesn’t already, but that might just be me being overly optimistic
Had to go back and check which oneshot I tagged in my naga AU post and the answer is yes and no. When they encounter him for the first time he does vaguely remember them. His brain is scrambled with a combo of animal instincts and Doyle's predisposition not to trust people but there's a visible difference in how he reacts to them vs other humans. He will attack Doc if he gets too close to begin with but he's a bit more lenient with Drew and is completely tolerant of Zak. Unbeknownst to them, this is because he's recognising Zak as Kur (aka. his superior) and not his nephew. Fun fact about this AU: Doyle is also cryptid enough that Zak's powers somewhat work on him, which is a whole other can of worms.
He eventually comes out of survival mode and calms down enough to realise who the fam is/who he is and is trusted around the house, although for the first few months everyone is on thin ice because he is predisposed to a lot of predatory behaviours/instincts, which the fam have to learn how not to trigger. There are also a couple of mystical abilities he has that he totally learns he has by accident.
But on a lighter note sometimes the naga and human behaviours mesh together in not so dangerous ways, and Drew has to hold in laughter when he does things like tongue flicking at certain smells, puffing out his cobra hood when he's offended, or trying to cram himself into impossible spaces in search of warmer temperatures.
I haven't written anything for the moment he gets found but I do have this, which is Doc's POV set a few weeks after Doyle being found: https://docs.google.com/document/d/1ANz4Kq7HN6qgcxil1ReN3ImD8475miRi4_JEc6Ola1I/edit?usp=sharing

Naga! Doyle AU sketches inspired by my most recent asks
old, slightly outdated OG post for this AU:

I saw your request for TSS asks, and I’ll gladly deliver since it’s my hyperfixation atm. You mentioned Nagaverse in the tags, so I’ll ask about it. Is it a universe where everyone is a naga? Like there’s an entire family of half-snake scientists?? Or is it a universe where the nagas take over the world in a bad ending kinda way?
closest answer is the first one! Nagaverse is a hodgepodge of AUs that stemmed from this AU I made a few years back, which lives rent free in my brain because I'm a sucker for the 'give favourite character animalistic traits' trope:
https://www.tumblr.com/thistle-bone-and-sharp-stones/182306776903/warning-long-post-ahead-so-i-have-a-few-tss-aus?source=share
I made nagafied designs for some of the rest of the fam at one point and they are floating around my tumblr somewhere but I still make selfindulgent headcanons/ oneshots for the original, Doyle centric version of AU a lot. Anyone who wants headcanons on that needs to be prepared for a giant essay.

Okay, can you share a change for TSS? I loved that AU crack post with Doyle being Kur, or even Fisk being Kur would have been neat.
I presume you’re asking for one of my rewrite ideas, so I’ll go with that. To be honest, it’s a little hard with TSS, since I didn’t change much with the canon stuff, mostly because out of the three shows, it’s the most well written. But I do have a few ideas, and here’s one of them. I would have eventually had it that the nagas end up splitting into two factions during the later parts of season 2/post season 2, when it comes to Zak and when Argost gets Kur powers. Rani Nagi, of course, follows and worships Argost eventually, because he will give her what she wants, which is to kill all humans. And while a good half of nagas follow their Queen, still wanting to kill all humans, the other half disagrees... They feel it is wrong to turn on Kur, who they do care about and worship, after what he did for them in the past. And even if they may not like humans, they still owe it to Kur/Zak to be there for him and do what he asks of them. This faction is run by Shaahee Samaira, Rani Nagi’s slightly younger sister who is a librarian, and who ends up talking the most to Zak when her half of the naga still follow under him. Zak really doesn’t want to be worshipped by them, but eventually comes around to leading them somewhat, in hopes to help them form a better relationship with the new-aged world around them, and with humans.

CRies deviantart user magentamustang wrote me a oneshot for the kur family au i made and its so good,,,, they gave me permission to post it for em so please read on if you’re interested!!
Zak darted around the corner of the nearest building and tried to catch his breath. He could hear the shouting of the angry mob from a few streets away, their furious yelling only growing louder and more aggressive. Pressing his back further into the cold metal did little to hide him and soon, sure enough, he couldn’t shake the notion that he was all alone. He could feel his heart pounding against the confines of his chest as he tried to bring his erratic breathing under control, fearing that it would ultimately lead to his detection. His panic escalated when he realised he was failing to naturally sense any help nearby. His nearly ever present connection with his parents and uncle was gone, which indicated that they were all some distance away. Now desperate as he knew they couldn’t rescue him, he felt a warmth and agitation on his skin as Kur called out to his allies. They didn’t call back. Zak knew that there were cryptids running rampant on the city streets – he was flinching with their rage and frustration more by the minute. Yet although he was born with the remains of their ancient king flowing through his veins, he might as well have been a normal human being. They remained uninterested in his pleas. From what Zak could make out, after the Naga’s had learnt the family’s dark secret, Rani Nagi and her subordinates had seized control over most of the earth’s cryptid population. The disturbing part was that it seemed like the four ancient Sumerian cryptid entities in the family – or the parts of them that were evil at least: they were more than happy to let the Naga’s wreak havoc on New York city. The situation seemed bleak. Hopeless even. “Hey, there’s one of them!” Zak’s heart was in his throat as he saw one man come racing around the street corner and he practically felt like it was going to ditch his body when he saw the rest of the mob follow, their angry eyes set on him. Even though he felt rooted to the spot, Zak managed to work feeling back into his legs and run. Run for his life. He darted down the nearest alleyway. It was a good job he had the claw, otherwise he would have never been able to outrun some of them. Though his training didn’t prove faithful in the end because after losing his way in a back alley, he found himself cornered against three unscalable, solid brick walls. His eyes pinned from left to right and then back again wildly, looking for escape routes. The mob was rounding the last corner and the walls were all too high to grapple onto with the claw. As the angry crowd met him against the dead end, Zak felt like a rat in a trap. Back once again against a wall, Zak took out the claw and pointed it at the advancing people to create a barrier. “Stay back!” People were afraid of what they didn’t understand, so it was no surprise that the sight of the boy’s weapon glowing bright orange like a fiery stick in unison with his eyes made them move back and emit cries and gasps. However, Zak knew that his tricks wouldn’t hold them back for long. The strongest in the group were already starting to move through towards him. The situation had become so tense and heated that Zak knew it would be nearly impossible to escape on foot now. Just as he thought the people were going to grab him and the situation was going to explode into an inferno; Zak witnessed what he could interpret as a miracle. He heard the sound of a jetpack roaring overhead, slowly but surely growing louder. The people in the mob suddenly drew some of their attention away from him and started pointing to the sky, shouting and swearing profusely. Zak felt a large figure land behind him with a soft thud and a tide of relief washed over him as a strong arm was swiftly wrapped around his midsection. The crowd lunged for them in a mad bid but Zak’s rescuer sent the two of them airborne so that they hovered over the sea of people. The screaming of the mob was beginning to ring in Zak’s ears as objects were now being hurled at them alongside the array of curses and insults. Despite only enduring this for thirty odd seconds, Zak’s rescuer growled. Zak couldn’t blame him. The man had a much shorter temper, so it was no surprise for the boy to witness him plucking a grenade from his belt. Zak couldn’t help but sneer at their pursuers as the grenade was dropped into the crowd. It exploded with a loud ‘crack-bang’ and released a cloud of pungent gunpowder smoke which dispersed between the people who were now running for their lives. When Zak found that his feet were no longer dangling in mid-air as he was dropped atop a building, he felt himself (and Kur) relax. Doyle dropped down beside him, cutting the engines on his jetpack. Once Zak was able to catch his breath after being hunched over, Zak turned to his uncle. His thanks turned to worry. Doyle had never looked worse for wear. His expression was dynamite. His eyes were a warning amber, flashing erratically with little sparks threatening to ignite inside the whites of his eyes. Zak also picked up on the occasional twitch in the man’s posture. Zak could relate. He could feel the emotions of tens, if not hundreds of cryptids all screaming inside his head. He had no doubt that it was just as bad (or worse) for Doyle. When he recovered his breath and spoke up; his tone was rough. “Your parents and the gorilla cat have already made it back to the airship Miniman, it’s just us out here,” Doyle confirmed. He went to the edge of the building and looked over. “Now we just have to get there too with the near entire population of New York city trying to kill us in the process.” Zak cringed, “yeah, that should be a breeze uncle Doyle.” Doyle rolled his eyes. “We haven’t got very long before they find a way up here. The longer we stay, the worse this will get.” Zak knew Doyle was right. It was very rare for his uncle to get this serious. After they had been told by Doc and Drew that they were indeed reincarnations of Kur, Doyle had become incredibly tense and unstable. It was a wonder that he could still function that way. “I’ve had enough of helping people,” he spat. Zak broke the fragile tension forming, “H-how fast do you think you can get us away?” “Fast enough.” In order to reach the jetpack’s top speed, Zak found himself being fastened into a makeshift safety belt (had his parents been there, they probably would have yelled at Doyle about it). It enabled Doyle to fly with the use of both arms and make the odds for their escape attempt lean more towards their favour. Once Zak was secured to his chest, Doyle dove straight off of the roof and into a nose dive. Zak had to brace himself for the rush of air that slapped him in the face when they jumped. Through the wind pelting him, Zak could see the concrete hundreds of feet below him drawing perilously closer through squinted eyes. Just when he began to panic, thinking that they weren’t going to pull up, Doyle straightened out above him and flew them into a curve, the jetpack carrying them down the open road like a bullet. The speed that they were flying at was taking its toll on Zak’s airway, the pelting air making it hard for him to move and even draw breaths. It was hard to keep his eyes open and the cold, harsh air made them water. His eyelashes were fluttering too, mixing with the tears and creating a blur of passing skyscrapers and people that whizzed by them every half-second. Zak had never before appreciated his uncle’s skill when it came to operating a jetpack so much. It was a wonder that Doyle could still see, let alone keep track of where he was going at all – Zak was experiencing vertigo and there were many times when he thought they were going lose control and crash. Doyle slowed and jerked to the right down a side street. Zak felt the ropes on the harness straining as he did so. Doyle continued with his zig zagging manoeuvres for a while to keep attention focusing on them for no more than a few seconds at a time. He eventually brought his arms out in front of him in a kind of superman pose as they flew straight up like a rocket towards the blue sky. Zak spotted the coast from their height and relaxed a little, knowing the airship was somewhere across the estuary. Once he thought that his vision had settled, Doyle annoyingly threw them into another nose dive. Whether it was to avoid detection or just for the thrill - Zak didn’t know. He wouldn’t have been able to tell with Doyle. Doyle pulled up so that they were flying just metres above the water this time. Zak could feel the salty spray whipping against him as they flew underneath the bridge connecting the two islands, to make them less detectable to the motorists on the bridge. As they flew in the shadow of the structure, over the noise of the jetpack, the traffic and the ocean, Zak thought he a scream from atop the bridge. He thought he had imagined it at first but then he heard it a second time – a very human cry from above them. He shouted to Doyle. “Doyle! Something’s happening on the bridge, we need to-.” “No can do Zakman, we need to get ourselves out of here. These people can defend themselves for all I care!” Doyle shouted back with a tone of disgust. Just as Zak was working up a reply, there was a loud bang and a few large chunks of concrete plummeted from the bridge, falling towards them. Doyle swerved between the falling rocks to avoid being him. He frowned and flew up the side of the bridge to investigate. Zak immediately spotted the problem. The Taniwha that had nearly crushed his dad during their inner city fight had someway found its way onto the bridge. Half of the lanes were clear but there were still a lot of cars and trucks in the opposite lanes. The people were exiting their cars and running for their lives, screaming terror. It was a wonder that the bridge could support the huge, 100 tonne mosasaur. However, the cryptid was knocking down the support columns and wires that kept the bridge stable. If no one stopped it, the bridge would collapse into the sea, taking the cryptid and innocent civilians down with it. “Doyle, we have to do something!” “What!?” The mercenary shouted in disbelief. “If this thing keeps destroying the bridge, hundreds of innocent people will die!” Zak argued. “You’ve seen what this thing can do, it’s out of our control!” Zak recoiled at Doyle’s words. He knew that he hadn’t meant it that way but he felt like making things worse was his only purpose right now. Pleading, he looked into his uncle’s eyes. They were angered but also full of concern for him. “I’m not doing this to waste your time Doyle, it’s for me,” Zak said with a sad sigh, “I just want to do something right for once. My powers have been nothing but trouble since Antarctica and I just want to help people for once instead of making them scared of me!” Zak hadn’t meant to sound so demanding but the coldness in Doyle’s eyes seemed to thaw and he gave in to his nephew’s argument. “Alright. You can try.” Doyle dropped his nephew onto the bridge. Zak pulled out the claw and pointed it at the creature. “Alright, time to go back to the open ocean fish lips!” The creature set its huge eyes on the boy, its green orbs glowing orange. It let go of one of the support beams it was shredding. “That’s it, surely you would rather be back home, right?” The creature dropped its huge tail onto the bridge, making it sway. Zak nearly lost his balance as he poured his power on. “Come on!” The creature looked at the water, tempted by the prospect. Zak could sense its emotions and the beast was riled up by the excitement of being around humans for the first time in its life. Despite handling larger creatures before his power spike, he couldn’t summon enough energy to persuade this one to get off the bridge. He could almost feel Kur feeding off of his fear that this would turn into another monotonous situation of lost control. Kur wanted this cryptid to hurt these people. Kur hated his reincarnation’s race and he wanted nothing more than to drive them to extinction. “Do I have to do everything myself?” Zak was relieved when he heard Doyle’s voice inside the creature’s mind as its eyes grew an even brighter orange. He glanced to the left to see Doyle in a defensive stance. His eyes were orange hollows and concentration was etched into his features. Zak could hear his uncle’s Kur muttering near undecipherable commands to the cryptid without Doyle having to move his lips. Zak was overwhelmed by a feeling of accomplishment as the creature dragged its lumbering body towards the railings separating it from the sea. Crushing them with ease, it plummeted down into the water. The bridge rocked and groaned as it was released from the creature’s weight and as a huge wave of surf erupted from the sea as the cryptid hit the water, surging over the side of the bridge and spraying, Zak, Doyle and the civilians with a cloud of spray. Zak wiped his eyes and laughed, somewhat overjoyed. He had missed his ability to coexist with Kur – even if Zak never knew he was there in the first place. The boy ran to the edge of the bridge and watched the creature swim away. “Straight on to open ocean!” Zak wiped his brow of the saltwater, “No stopping and no humans. Not ever again.” He breathed. He heard Doyle laugh. “Nice work Miniman.” His uncle was smiling. As if he was proud of himself. As if it didn’t matter that they were soaking wet, exhausted and surrounded by people with gawking mouths. “I can’t believe it worked! The Kur power actually listened to me!” Doyle and Zak high-fived. Doyle chuckled. “Okay, now can we get out of here?” Zak nodded as Doyle picked him up and they flew upwards at a now steady pace so that Zak could see the astonished faces of the crowd below as they exited their cars to look at their saviours as they disappeared into the distance of high rise buildings.
