Nakagin Night.
Inspired by the (no longer standing) Nakagin Capsule Tower in Japan. If you are unfamiliar with the building I definitely recommend looking it up and reading about it!
I am forever curious about old buildings and I often like to imagine what they were like when they were first built and how bustling they were in their prime.
I saw photos of some of the capsules that were in disrepair and overrun by nature and really wanted to create an image of one being cozy and lived in.
I plan to make more art within this theme of preserving the memory of unique places from the past that are no longer around and applying my own little twist and a retro aesthetic.
This is the finalized version that I sell at conventions and is also available on my site.

My media this week (5-11 Jun 2022)
Tumblr media
📚 STUFF I READ 📚
😊👂 Peril at End House (Hercule Poirot #9) (Agatha Christie, author; Hugh Fraser, narrator)
😍 Slow Dancing In A Burning Room (No Sweeter Death #1) (feelslikefire) - great 00Q slow burn
😍 Whoever Fights Monsters (No Sweeter Death #2) (feelslikefire, circ_bamboo) - 00Q/White Collar crossover - though technically a sequel, could easily be read as standalone; does have a pandemic storyline that def hits differently in 2022 than in 2013 when it was written
🥰👂 Lord Edgware Dies (Hercule Poirot #10) (Agatha Christie, author; Hugh Fraser, narrator)
Hold It All At Bay (psocoptera) - decently entertaining zimbits soulbond fic (a small but unfortunate use of the 'magical negro' trope)
😍👂 Murder on the Orient Express (Hercule Poirot #11) (Agatha Christie, author; Dan Stevens, narrator) - no matter how many times I reread this, it never gets old
No Superman (WhoNatural) - sterek Scrubs AU
💖💖 +170K of shorter fic so shout out to these I really loved 💖💖
MWR (One-EyedBossman (desert000rose), SecretFandomStories) - MCU: stucky, 26K - Differently Okay Local Idiots #5 - can't get enough of this series!
Dash Yourself Upon the Rocks (triedunture) - OFMD: BlackBonnet, 15K - actual Kraken AU - Stede wants to be the fearsome 'Kraken Hunter' & then he finds it; lots of delicious monsterfucking tentacle sex
With Shoes Like Those (AidaRonan) - MCU: stucky, 10K - reread, perennial fave - pre-war setting with tiny Dom Steve giving Bucky exactly what he's been craving
pretty baby you have me (so weak) (inevitablemeow) - MCU: stucky, 10K, canon-divergent Daddy kink - Bucky talks in his sleeps so now Steve knows that Bucky wants to say it. And Steve is going wild waiting to hear it.
📺 STUFF I WATCHED 📺
Fire Island - 😍😍😍 thee best modern Pride & Prejudice adaptation
Legends of Tomorrow - s5, e13-15; s6, e1-4
Bob's Burgers - s3, e20
Murderville - s1, e3; interesting concept, Kumail Nanjiani was good, but I feel like the original British show is probably better (though this could be bc I'm largely meh on Will Arnett)

200,000 yen-per-night Airbnb is the successor to Tokyo’s famous Nakagin capsule apartments【Pics】
Capsule House K was the mountain retreat of architect Kisho Kurosawa, but now it can be yours for the night. Back in October, 50 years of architectural history came to an end when Tokyo’s Nakagin Capsule Tower was dismantled. Designed by famous Japanese architect Kisho Kurokawa, the Nakagin Capsule Tower was the world’s best-known example of the metabolism architectural style, with its capsule…

The Nakagin Capsule Tower, Kisho Kurokawa, 1972
PLUG N’ PLAY CAPSULES FLOAT IN METABOLIST TOWER (2015)
An interesting video from Kirsten Dirkson, who has created many low-key but informative architectural shorts.  Here, she and her family rent a unit in the tower for the night, and are given a tour of one that’s in original condition. The building’s design was based on the idea that it should evolve and adapt sustainably, with each capsule able to be detached and replaced as required. However, lack of maintenance has left many units uninhabitable, and its prime central Tokyo location means there is economic pressure (met by equal resistance, from the architectural community) to demolish it. Nakagin Capsule Tower - #中銀カプセルタワー I made this photo editing in August 2020, from a photo taken during my trip in 2018. I planned to stay at least one night in this iconic masterpiece of japanese Metabolism. Unfortunately this project won't never happen since the demolition of the building started 2 days ago, on April 12th 2022. It was built 50 years ago. It'd be interesting to rebuild the Nakagin following the current paraseismic construction standards. I'm pretty sure many people attracted by retrofuturistic architecture would like to stay in this atypical building 😊 #nakagin #nakagincapsuletower #中銀カプセルタワービル #中銀 #カプセル #メタボリズム #metabolism #architecturalmetabolism #metabolismarchitecture #metabolistmovement #Japan #Ginza #japanesearchitecture https://www.instagram.com/p/CcV7AX6tnqU/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

by scoundrel
This building is loosely based on the real-life Nakagin Capsule Tower and features 32 individual, extremely cramped compact capsules. Currently, unit 408 on level 4 is available, equipped with the most basic necessities for a single tenant. Additional units can be unhidden and furnished as required. This is a packaged lot and must be placed into %documents%\Electronic Arts\The Sims 3\Library folder. This lot uses expansion packs. This lot uses custom content. Sometimes, this lot may cause route failures due to limited space (and extensive use of moveobjects command). However, they usually occur when using the "go to floor" elevator interaction; resident(s) are able to route normally with "go here", "ring bell", and "go home" interactions. All service NPCs routed normally during playtesting. In any other cases, just redo the failed interaction. Lot Size: 20x20 Lot Price (furnished): 10710 Lot Price (unfurnished): 5268 Custom Content by Me: - Residential lot, 1 playable unit Additional Credits: Filipe Magalhães & Ana Luisa Soares: The Metabolist routine Kirsten Dirksen: Nakagin: 140 plug n' play capsules float in metabolist tower
Expansion Packs: Late Night, University Life & Into The Future

How I planned to spend my night: read comic 'friend' recommended me (only up to 5th passage, so not daunting to start), then either work on an embroidery -or- work on painting my new Nakagin Capsule Tower model
How I actually spent my night: read comic, get massively triggered, have 5 (and counting) hour anxiety attack during which I blow up at 'friend' who recommended comic (and knows about the particular phobia that got triggered) and most likely destroy one of the few friendships I have left, bother my partner with my anxious ramblings, and feel crushingly alone because all of my minuscule support network are either busy or asleep

Nakagin Capsule Tower, built in 1972, was designed for businessmen or "salarymen", who needed a place to stay after a late night at the office. Each 100 sq ft capsule has a fold-out desk, single bed and aeroplane style toilet, but no kitchen. https://t.me/InterestingasfuckBackup/4369 #interestingasfuck #rinterestingasfuck #interestingasfuckreddit #interestingasfucksubreddit #r_interestingasfuck

news: ever wonder what will our future home look like? the home competition 2020
for some people, home is the place to settle the night, which does not have to only be in one place. for as long as you have a bed and toilet in it, that's home. however, some think of home as their permanent space, a nest to live, to grow, to make memories. and this is where the progressive part of home designing matters. now, if we have to wander to the distant future, say, in 50 to 100 years. can you picture already what sort of home you would like to live in? define "home" in the futurewill it be focused on human interaction, healthy living, and sustainability? plants in every corner, biodegradable furniture, less household carbon footprints, more and more recycling. will, it provides more affordable housing? where there is a bed, living room, dining room, working room, all-in-one multifunctional space. less acquiring new lands, strongly highlights the relationships between humans and nature... 3d printing, and increasing the connections between rural and urban living? or maybe, we all are going to have no more boundaries between living creatures and machines? where you can start talking to the walls (as they are embedded throughout the house and can respond to your inquiries and priorities), like apple's siri, amazon's alexa, or google assistant. one thing for sure, you will never be alone at home; even when you are alone...perhaps, the future holds the moment where we will never be home alone anymore as it is constitutionally driven by dynamic comfort, styles, trends, and of course, technologies. the mobile phone, its applications, or the laptop and all those online meetings you have right now could be the beginning. but it is part of designing, and reinventing technologies through design. no one knows if, in the future, your life will be all-day accompanied by an invisible screen that pops up anywhere anytime. or imagine when you wake up in the morning, a robotic maid welcomes you in the dining room and serve plates of breakfast and clean them instantly through the kitchen cabinets. or do your daily chores, if your house does not have the ability to self-clean itself. what other possibilities can one imagine? for the past three years, the home competition has challenged architects to rethink the "home". as time goes by, architects and designers have continuously investigated the role that homes play in our lives, like peter eisenman's house vi or kurokawa's nakagin capsule tower. in this era, to twenty, fifty, or hundred years from now, it is essential to consider the modern role that a "home" must play and the inherent connection between a "home" and its residents. designers may consider the impacts of global population shifts, the proximity of major cities to coastlines, new building techniques, co-housing trends, and especially build to anticipate particular disaster as a reaction to the current pandemic, for example. starts reimagining, designing, and create the story that will surprise people in a way to evoke livable tomorrow and get a chance to win $8,000 in prize money plus publication opportunities! the home competition invites all designers to explore and embrace architecture ideas for the future to redefine the spaces we live in. register now submission deadline october 26th 2020.https://bit.ly/30xhhXL

Living in a Long Forgotten Future
We take a look inside the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Shimbashi, Tokyo, during a night's stay. Designed by Kisho Kurokawa and built in 1972, the cube-shaped units are meant to be individually detached and replaced as they age, but never were. The building has since fallen into disrepair and is slated for eventual demolition.
