2023 Fic+Vid recs

A variety of things I liked this year, made this year. Once again, this got long, so fic recs and fandom-specific recs for dmbj are below the cut. But first a few miscellaneous vids

[vid] Cockroach Motherfuckers by eruthros, thingswithwings multifandom Immortal queer characters multi-vid! This is exactly as much fun and hopeful as it sounds. I've seen maybe 2 of the sources so you know, you don't have to have seen them all.

(We) Didn't Just Come Here to Dance [Fanvid] by FairestCat fandom: Newsies I haven't actually seen newsies, but I really liked this vid. Taking the (very dramatic) musical theater dancing and putting it to a Carly Rae Jepsen song works SUPER well, visually very fun time. Also, unions!

[Vid] Oceanographer's Choice by absternr fandom: Heroes (cdrama 2022) Bai Choufei, Su Mengzhen, and Lei Chun's fucked up relationship(s)/falling apart bad times. This vid is deeply upsetting, just a real exploration of sometimes caring a lot about each other makes everything worse. For maximum sad times, this goes well with absternr's other heroes vid, hey, I just met you, which is the meet-cutes that led to this whole mess.

[AMV] The Draw by Lovely Goblin fandom: Revolutionary Girl Utena Black Rose Arc! I've watched this vid so many times really good weird and creepy black rose arc vibes really good parallels between all the different duelists

Also blanket rec that if you've seen Everything Everywhere All at Once, consider looking for vids for it. There's a bunch on ao3 (which can be easier to navigate than youtube, though there are definitely more total vids on youtube) and they're pretty much all spectacular? I was going to include one or two in this rec post and couldn't decide

The wild phonemes of 40 Eridani Keid by astronicht Fandom: Star Trek (aos/tos mashup canon) relationship: Spirk ~10k words rated E You know if you'd told me a year ago I'd be reccing a spirk fic in 2023 I would have been a bit surprised. This is not particularly my fandom wheelhouse. But you know, they're always good, and this fic is really great. This is almost an episode-fic except that nothing really happens plot-wise. But instead of a plot we get a lot of musing about geology and diplomacy and clever references to current events as history in that very trek kind of way and Spock being bitchy just for fun.

fuori dal mondo by bladedweaponsandswishycoats fandom: Qi Ye relationship: Beiyuan/Wu Xi, Beiyuan/Zhou Zishu (more plot than ship focused) ~60k words rated E This is a retelling of Qi Ye except Beiyuan is... some kind of eldritch horror, part-time. It pretty much goes beat for beat through canon (which I appreciate, I loved that book and do not like any of the current tls enough to reread) but with the added layer of whatever is going on with this eldritch thing, which is very cool and tied into canon so don't let me spoil it for you.

We're Leaving Our Shadows Behind Us by lady_ragnell fandom: Tortall - Protector of the Small relationship: Kel/Neal/Yuki ~70k words rated T Canon retelling of Squire and Lady Knight but from Neal's POV. This fic really digs into Neal as a character and the details of the worldbuilding of Tortall, especially the chamber of the ordeal. Also somewhere along the way it sold me on this ship, which I wasn't exactly rooting for when I read the books the first time.

The Untamed/MDZS

a harmony between qin and se by Alaceron relationship: Wangxian ~60k words rated E This is a gender-bent (to make it a het romance) no magic historical drama au where Wei Wuxian is a woman who's arranged to marry Lan Wangji. Honestly this is pretty far from the untamed, especially in terms of themes, though some plot elements will be familiar, but mostly it's just a really great compellingly written historical drama, that happens to have main characters with some familiar characteristics.

Like a Game of Chess by countingcr0ws relationship: Wangxian ~40k words rated T Modern au: influencer Wei Wuxian runs into Lan Wangji on a trip to Taiwan and they travel around together. I love all the little details of their trip - it's like getting to see a new place without going anywhere. Also sometimes I forget that wangxian are very cute? They're a good ship brant

The Epic Highs and Lows of High School Zine Production by el_em_en_oh_pee relationship: Jin Ling & Jiang Cheng, Jin Ling & the mdzs juniors ~7k words rated G Modern au: High schooler Jin Ling has big feelings about a lot of things, including zines, gender, and family. One of those juniors-centric fics that makes me say oh they are Teens huh.

A Little Hole in the Wall by MountainRose gen, Liu Sang centric ~8k words rated G Honestly I would rec this fic even to people who know nothing about tomb shows. One thing that really draws me to a book is descriptions of food (I have read multiple food memoirs this year), and this restaurant au has AMAZING food (and food prep) in it. Not too plotty, mostly just descriptions of delicious things and characterization via cooking.

green with an attitude by ilgaksu relationship: heihua ~8k words rated T If you are in the English language dmbj fandom and you care at all about heihua you probably have already checked out ilgaksu's fic, which has basically defined heihua for the English language fandom. My favorite heihua moments are when other people show up and give you that foil to realize how weird they are, and this fic has that both via Xiuxiu and Wu Xie. Also, a fic about dancing!

making anything last, keeping anything safe by A (mumblemutter) relationship: Wu Xie/Xiao Bai (background pingxie) ~8k words rated M Post canon Xiao Bai takes Wu Xie to explore a tomb that should be perfectly safe... (They set off a sex pollen trap.) I don't particularly ship this, but this fic was extremely well done and kind of sold me on the ship. Fun tomb, really fun characterization for everyone involved.

A World Made Over, Fresh and New by Thimblerig gen, iron triangle, Wu Xie & Li Cu ~1k words rated G If you've ever gotten specific dmbj fic recs from me, it's probably included something by Thimblerig, they're amazing at pulling in very specific canon snippets in under 5k words and I'd generally recommend going through their work by tags if you're looking for fic with underloved side characters or fic set during a part of canon that isn't UN or post-canon, which are generally easier to find. That said, this particular fic is in fact the fandom staple of post-reboot let's go look at a tomb and pulling in a big ensemble cast including some reboot folks. But it's a staple because it's a good vibe, and this is a really well done sliver of friendship and relationship building and perhaps even a tomb trap?

[vid] When He Died by teyla Wu Sanxing-centric This vid really leans into the weird tomb nonsense and conspiracies and builds to something quite odd, meant in the best possible way. A concentrated version of what tomb shows want to be at their best, from a horror/strange spooky things perspective. Mind the tags.

3. What fandoms do you write for?

Whatever I am obsessed with at the moment. The last stuff I was working on was Percy Jackson fic, before that Heartstopper (and I WILL get back to those wips eventually). Oh, and Newsies is also currently in the works! Basically I have ADHD and I am all over the place all of the time. I'll go back to wips I started 5 years ago and keep working on them. What I've written vs what I've actually managed to polish and post is a HUGE disparity lol

5. Do you respond to comments?

Yes, almost always. It takes me awhile sometimes, but I try to respond to every comment. I worry that if I don't respond, people will stop commenting.

6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?

I've written a couple Major Character Death fics, but they're not on AO3 because they were just drabbles so I only posted them on tumblr (also they're very old and bad)

7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?

hmmm maybe All We Do Is Run, just compared to the source material lmao

8. Do you get hate on fics?

I have a couple times. Mostly on fics where I've introduced OCs, which sucks.

9. Do you write smut?

Yes, sometimes. But I don't post it. I write it for myself and will maybe share it with friends if they're interested.

10. Craziest crossover?

I've never written a proper crossover. I'll write AUs where I take the characters of Property A and put them into the story of Property B, but I've never written a true crossover where characters of two properties interact.

11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?

Nope, but I've definitely had fic concepts stolen. Which sounds petty, but I've made posts about fics I'm working on and had people take them and write their own fics with the same details I mentioned and it's like. Not plagiarism exactly and it's impossible to own ideas, really, but it does rub me the wrong way.

12. Have you ever had a fic translated?

A couple times! It's very cool!

13. Have you ever Co-written a fic?

I tried once a long time ago and it went poorly. Turns out I am not a very good collaborator sometimes.

14. All time favourite ship?

I don't--you want me to pick ONE?! are you kidding lol

15. What’s a wip you want to finish but doubt you ever will?

I have SO MANY. There's a Star Trek fic I've been working on off and on since Beyond came out. There's my mermaid!Buck 911 fic. There's my current Heartstopper fic. There's my PJO Anastasia fic. There's my angst canon divergence Psych fic. My google drive is a graveyard of partially written stories begging to see the light of day.

Dialogue

Finishing things, clearly.

18. Thoughts on dialogue in another language?

Depends wildly. I've written this in some Heartstopper fics, because Nick speaks French. And I had a friend who is fluent in French help me get it right. I think when people take the time to find a fluent speaker to help them or are fluent themselves, it's fine and good. And when people are just using google translate, it shows. Also, obviously, being bilingual has to make sense for the character. I also especially have beef with the way people often write latine characters/Spanish specifically. I grew up surrounded by latinos and nobody talks like that. Stop it. You all know what I'm talking about.

19. First fandom you wrote in?

ABC's Castle. Say what you will about Nathan Fillion, but that show shaped me as a person.

20. Fave fics you’ve written?

All We Do Is Run (longest multi-chap I've ever written. this thing was years of my life.)

Jack

Farmboy from Earth

Smart but absolutely one hundred percent refuses to use it academically

Like...Fs in school but he built a mini airplane in his barn once and thinks faster on his feet than anyone else

Gets persuaded to join Starfleet because his dad was in it

At the academy, he makes friends with Race who’s training to be a doctor

Davey

Is a Vulcan whose mom is human

Davey went the Spock route, throwing himself into his studies and doing his best to be as completely Vulcan as he could be so he’d be accepted

Les, on the other hand, never did. Les is an emotional, exuberant little kid who loves laughing, couldn’t care less about what logic has to say, and is the Bane of Existence for his poor teachers who thought they’d be getting a model student like Davey

But when Davey gets accepted into the Vulcan Science Academy he gets some passive aggressive comments about both his mom and his little brother and he’s like fuck that I’ll take my skills elsewhere if you won’t accept my and my family here

so he also joins Starfleet

Jack still refuses to use his intelligence in the way he’s expected to but even as he’s being a total jackass his teachers can see he’s smart

Davey gets asked to design a test specifically to test the ability to think under pressure that captains need using the power of Vulcan Logictm and Jack takes it earlier than most people just to prove he can

and fails

so he takes it again

fails again and realizes it’s designed to be unbeatable so he breaks the test, technically passes it, and is treated to a very upset Davey who knows he cheated because that test is supposed to be unbeatable but can’t actually prove that it wasn’t sheer dumb luck

because the Academy knows the test isn’t supposed to be beaten, it doesn’t mean Jack is a captain, but it does reaffirm that he’s a lot smarter than he acts like he is

I don’t want to follow the plot of the 2009 movie anymore because it’s too depressing so here’s a bunch of stuff that happens after they all somehow end up in space together:

Beam me up Spotty becomes a shipwide catchphrase and Spot despises it.

“I do a very serious job! Stop making a joke of it! How many times have I saved your lives!”

Jack is very tactile. Davey is not. At first the two mix like oil and water, but with enough shaking that makes a very tasty salad dressing and they eventually get along and then Davey high fives Jack and it’s like...a huge deal

Race is awful. Just the worst. Will and has walked into a room with a sock on the door because he saw a sock on the door and therefore decided that was the time to deliver medication that just couldn’t wait until morning

Crutchie is the small, young cyborg who gets a little chuckle from everyone who meets him at first and then he smiles at them while taking out their ship without having to get up out of his seat because he’s good at his job and hates being underestimated

Jack and Race attach a knife to their cleaning robot and name it Stabby. The first time Davey sees it is the strongest display of emotion anyone on the ship has seen from him

Jack sends captionless comics out once a week and it’s a competition to see who can write the funniest caption. The winner is posted on the bridge. 

Davey won the comic contest once but never admitted it was him. Everyone knew but he never said it. It was a picture of him and the caption he wrote was “according to my calculations this is stupid and offensive” but he really did think it was funny.

Davey very slowly comes out of his shell, partly because Jack is very very determined to get him to come out of his shell

The first time he laughs out loud like not just smiles, laughs, there’s an “and the entire room clapped” moment

Jack meet’s Davey’s parents and Davey’s mom pegs instantly that Jack is in love with Davey but when she tries to mention it to Davey Davey has no idea because how is he supposed to know how to read emotions when he grew up on Vulcan?

Davey’s mom bluntly tells Jack that if he doesn’t explicitly state everything he feels Davey will never figure it out

Also Jack meets Les and finds an insane amount of humor in seeing a little boy who looks just as Vulcan as Davey doing somersaults around Davey while cheering excitedly while Davey keeps a completely straight face

That visit is also the first time Jack truly appreciates how powerful Vulcan insults can be, because they’re so impersonal sounding on a ship full of non-Vulcans but not so much on Vulcan when those are the only insults used

Jack finally tells Davey that he’s in love with him with another comic with a cutesy caption and Davey blushes all the way to the tips of his ears

Other Vulcans are Horrified when the visit the ship because they see a ship mostly full of chaotic humans and then they see a Vulcan and they’re like...ahhh, somebody sane by our standards.

And then Davey goes and kisses Jack’s cheek and laughs out loud when Stabby finally gets Spot’s ankles and generally behaves in a very illogical and emotional way and it’s just too much for them

Mostly I just like the idea of Jack as Kirk and Davey as Spock djgsdlhlas thank you and goodnight

Davey: Science officer, half Vulcan. Very protective of his boys and the crew. SPACE MOM

Crutchie: Ornery doctor. Acts like he hates everyone but actually loves them all with his whole heart. Rodger’s twin bro.

Spot: Head of engineering, very often gets hurt. He insists it’s not so he can see his boyfriend in the Med Bay.

Race: Pilot, very enthusiastic about his job. Has a pet tribble.

Elmer: Other pilot, calms Race down. Very good at his job, also a huge flirt.

Albert: Medical, he’s of the impression the Engineers are out to get hurt and is sure Spot has a death wish.

Finch: Security, he’s the best shot with a phaser on the ship. Loves his bf.

Tommy Boy: Engineering, he’s Med Bay’s second most frequent visitor.

Rodger: Also Engineering, he’s careful though. Crutchie’s twin bro.

Coffee Bean: In charge of plants. He always smells like coffee grounds.

Jojo: Works in communication, he’s the second best in the fleet.

Boots: Head of communication, he speaks fifteen languages. He cusses in every single one of them.

Les: Davey’s little brother who got on and refuses to get off.

Specs: Head of security, he has a big ass job with how often everyone gets in trouble.

Buttons: Medical, head of gossip aside from Crutchie. Somehow snuck his cat aboard ship.

Henry: He’s in the command chain but everyone ignores him.

Smalls: Other head of security, has punched every man on this ship.

Sniper: Second best shot on the ship and will punch anyone who says she’s not girly enough.

Dutchy: Third pilot in the rotation, always tired.

York: Security, has a sense of self preservation.

Joey: Scariest person in Engineering, and she keeps her nails painted.

Rafaela: Medical, also has painted nails and is a history buff. Be nice to her, she’s the one sewing your finger back on.

Do No Harm is pretty dang angsty. A lot of people tell me it made them cry.

do you write crossovers? if so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I have, though I don’t really anymore, unless you count Wreck-It Ralph as a crossover. The craziest one I ever wrote was a complete crackfic that @franniebanana I wrote when we were teenagers, called Doth 2, which...was a typo or something? It’s really stupid. But I still think of scenes from it and crack up.

Yup.

do you write smut? if so what kind?

Sure do! So much smut, haha. It’s...the sexy kind? I mean, hopefully? It tends to be what a friend refers to as ‘emo-porn’ because it’s always full of feelings, though once in awhile I write something Problematic™.

have you ever co-written a fic before?

@mareebird and I are co-writing a Brodinsons road trip fic. And, see above, weird crossover with @franniebanana. We were also writing a DS9 dance studio AU at one point, lol. @windsett and I have written a couple things together—including an original novel that has stalled.

what’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

Lol almost anything on my ffnet profile that’s incomplete. There’s some stuff from the 00s that I’m definitely never going to complete.

what are your writing strengths?

Dialogue. Action, I’m told, even though it’s a pain to write. Romance. I think I’m good at writing complicated emotions?

what are your writing weaknesses?

Verbosity, letting scenes drag on because I’m enjoying writing the dialogue, self-indulgence especially where romance is concerned. I never feel like I’m very good at putting together a good mystery, and yet I keep writing fics that include them.

what are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

I love doing it, though I always wish I knew more people who spoke other languages so I could actually check if my translations are correct. I do it more in my original fiction than my fanfiction.

what was the first fandom you wrote for?

The Enchanted Forest Chronicles.

what’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I...honestly can’t choose. I think I’m proudest of A Full and Factual Account of Asgard. Hm. Maybe Sleight of Hand.

Darling, I Know It's Getting Late (The Terror (TV 2018)) - Joplittle early career researchers au. One of the earliest things I wrote for this fandom. In which rain interrupts play and Ned is an excellent boyfriend.

To Fall Back On (The Terror (TV 2018)) - Another Joplittle, huh, you do like Joplittle. Anyway, this is a post-story somebody lives, in which Jopson and Little are settled down with their quiet trauma and their less quiet very big dog.

Promise in the Voyage (The Terror (TV 2018)) - Tozer/Little, merman au. In which Tozer is a merman. A sexy merman.

Moments of Peace (The Terror (TV 2018)) - Drabble collection of nothing but nice things. I'll open this up again once I'm done with my bang and my zine fic. I love writing these.

5) Do you respond to comments, why or why not?

I try to! At the moment, it's very hard because of various IRL stuff running me to physical exhaustion, but I do mean to get to it.

6) What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

My endings tend towards the sweet or bittersweet, tbh. It's probably It Takes All Your Power to Prove That You Don't Care, which is a very much unspoken angst, in a conversation between Little and Fitzjames.

8) Do you write crossovers? If so what is the craziest one you’ve written?

I do! The craziest, I can't tell you because it would absolutely reveal my very old fandom identity from when I was a teen and nobody needs to see that (I guarantee a few crossovers nobody else would have written). I can't think of anything too crazy I've written lately, but I have a few thoughts.

9) Have you ever received hate on a fic?

Less hate and more... weird disagreements about my treatment of Their Fave.

Once or twice, and usually not well. I'm just not that interested, and I think it shows.

In The Terror, I'm sorry, but Hodge/Pilk will not let me go, but I also love a lot of Hodge ships. I'm fond of Armitozer and Joplittle, but in VERY SPECIFIC configurations, tbh.

I've also loved Beth/Daryl from TWD, McShep (MCSHEP) from SGA, Garak/Bashir from DS9, the OT3 from Leverage and Anders/Gaia from The Almighty Johnsons.

15) What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

I have a Misfits AU featuring Pilk and Armitage that I started and is sort of hanging there.

16) What are your writing strengths?

IDK, I think sensory detail? There's a mildly synaesthetic element running through a lot of what I write.

17) What are your writing weaknesses?

Plot. PLOT. WHAT IS IT AND HOW DOES IT WORK.

18) What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

If you think it works and can do it, do it. If you're doing it to show off, don't. Provide a translation if it's important. Don't drop in random words just because you can, that's irritating.

19) What was the first fandom you wrote for?

Oh, lord, I don't know. The Mighty Ducks?

20) What’s your favorite fic you’ve written?

I don't know about ever, but I think my favourite thing I've written for The Terror is my quiet and first Hodge/Pilk, it's love's illusions i recall, because it just made me ache, and the visual of it is something that has never, ever left me.
