Forget Me Not

Summary: It's Vanitas’s birthday, and Noè still needs to find him a present. Domi takes him to the market fair, but he gets a bit distracted. Who knew flowers had powerful meanings?

Warnings: Fluff and Angst, mentions of death, grief ramble

Notes: Prompts for this were Separation/Stargazing. This plays on the monologue from the beginning that Noè does, towards the end. This is a Gen fic.

“Noe,” Domi called for him, “are you almost ready?”

The sound of her voice made something flutter inside him. Like the wings of a butterfly taking flight for the first time. It brought a warm smile to his cheeks. “Yes, indeed.”

He flipped his hat onto his head and tipped it in farewell to Ameila. Murr barely glanced over at him, too tired and snuggled into bed to care. Noe smiled anyways and skipped over to Domi.

“Someone is awfully cheerful. I didn’t realize you liked shopping so much, Noe.” Noe glanced down at her. His eyes lingered on her empty arm, feeling the phantom sensation of wrapping his own to warm her. He chose instead to keep it to himself.

“Well, this is the first time I’ve had time to fully visit the market. It's quite exciting.”

Domi shook her head. “Do you already know what you have in mind?”

The smile on Noe’s face dropped. The answer to that is no. However, Noe is confident that something there will catch his eye. Vanitas is so hard to shop for. It's not as if the man asks for anything either. Noe is not sure anything can fully represent to him how much he appreciates the man, but he must try. This he knows.

“Well, not exactly.” Noe fixed his hair. “But the market is sure to have all sorts of amazing things to choose from.”

Domi hummed softly to herself. “I know I didn’t have to,” she looked down at her shoes, “but I decided to get him something as well. Nothing too elaborate, just something of good quality.”

Noe gasped in delight, grasping her hand to bring to his lips. “That is very kind of you Domi. What is it?”

Upon seeing his hypnotized stare, Domi cringed and yanked her hand away from his hot breath. Noe almost missed the slight way her cheeks dusted red. “It's just a scarf. A fine quality one, so he better not lose it. Or get it stolen.”

A scarf? That's a perfect gift. Knowing Domi, Noe knew she must have found the nicest one. Vanitas did have a habit of getting cold. He liked to hide it, but the slight way his shoulders would shake always gave him away.

There was doubt on Domi’s face. Subtle, and mixed with something Noe couldn't read, but it was there. Noe calmed the flames inside him and gazed into her soul. “He will love it.” Domi’s face flickered into shock before settling on a smile.

The market was as extravagant as he expected. Colors and smells swirled around him like a harmony of sensations. Trinkets, food, clothes, jewelry, art, and so much more overwhelmed him. Noe wanted to touch it all. Smell it all. Feel and taste it all. The market seemed to go on for miles; he wasn't sure he could realistically accomplish such a hefty goal, but he wanted to.

Noe buzzed like a working bee around every vendor and person alike, only held back by the constant tug on his shirt by Domi. “Will you knock it off!”

Noe rubbed his neck. “Sorry, Domi.” He really did mean it. She calmed herself and huffed, telling him it was fine.

Noe couldn't help himself from gawking when his eyes landed on the most magnificent vendor he had ever seen. Domi followed his gaze and her mouth gaped with wonder, in the rare event she allowed herself to be herself in public.

They both slide over to the booth with doe eyes and slobbered mouths. The colors of every variety, creating the most vibrant rainbow, dazzled under the sun. Aromatics tingled Noè's nose. There were more flowers in this small width of space than Noè has possibly ever seen. How was this even possible?

“I want to decorate my home with these. I'll make a large order, is that alright?” Domi asked the older gentleman, who was barely tall enough to see over his shrub of flowers. The man's mustache smiled and said it was his pleasure.

The excitement flooded him. He rested his chin on her shoulder and watched, like a perched cat as Domi wrote a list of what she wanted. He hoped some of those would come to his quarters.

Jingles caught his ears. Masked dancers, dressed in striking colors, swayed through the middle of the crowd. They moved like the calm waves of water, so poised and harmonious. Their movements, the power they emanated, attracted anyone's eyes, if they were so lucky to turn and see.

One dancer in particular mesmerized Noè. One dancer kept themselves to the middle of the pack. That didn't mean they were hiding. No, they shined more brightly than the others.

Their movements were ethereal. The performance of an ancient being, or perhaps a god. Their mask reminded Noè of the Blue Moon. Round and intensely blue. Like Vanitas’s eyes as well.

Noè found himself following the performers through the crowd till they reached a white tent at the end of the yard. Around him performers of all kinds sheltered themselves, like a circus Noè supposed. For a moment the image of Naenia popped into his head. Then he scolded himself for letting her taint such a pure thing he once enjoyed.

Noè straightened himself and pushed back against that poison. He will keep his head high and remember she holds no power over him.

Noè snuck past the flaps of the entrance and kept himself to the shadows as his eyes searched for that mysterious dancer.

When he saw them, he tiptoed closer, followed shortly behind them as they went to their dressing room. There was only a single moment when he was brought back to his body and he realized his actions might seem creepy. It was right in front of the dressing room door.

What was he going to do? Noè didn't even know. Now Domi is probably wondering where he went.

Noè smacked his forehead. So dumb, he thought to himself. Looking around, he didn't even know where the marketplace was in comparison to here. Surely it can't be too far, Noè thought.

Just as Noè turned to return to Domi, a voice beckoned him from the otherside of the door. “Come in.”

Whether it was a good idea to enter or not, Noè couldn't help himself. He ducked his head inside carefully and gazed over at the poised being in the mirror across the room.

“Come. Don't be shy.” Something about their voice soothed Noè. It was comforting like a guiding mother, but wiser and nonchalant.

Noè shut the door and awkwardly stood in the middle of the room, unsure where to place his body. What would be most appropriate?

The being chuckled and patted the chair next to them. “No reason to be scared.” Noè swallowed and stepped closer. “You are lost, yes?” They gazed up at him. Even through the mask Noe could feel their eyes on him.

“I guess I am.” Noè chuckled breathlessly, with an awkward smile.

“How can I help you?”

Noè wasn't sure what compelled him to sit and tell this stranger everything, but that's exactly what he did. When he was done, the being hummed softly in thought and in confirmation. They took a moment to collect their thoughts before Noè imagined they smiled at him.

“So,” their voice sang like a hum, “You need a gift for a special friend?”

Noè nodded and curled his fists on his knees, leaning closer to say, “I've been torturing myself with ideas, but I can't figure out what would be perfect. Then I got distracted and ended up following you here.” He rubbed his neck, which grew in heat.

“I see.” The being turned to their desk to retrieve something Noè couldn't see, before turning back to him. “He is a special someone, yes? A tortured soul, perhaps. Maybe you wish to give him something that signifies a part of your bond without telling him what it is. For the risk he may turn tail and run, I suppose.” It mused.

Noè was shocked by how accurate they were. “Yes! Exactly.”

“I saw you liked flowers.” Noè kept his face calm as the shock hit him. Did they see him at the vendor?

“They are pretty, of course.”

“Have you heard of Asters?” Noè shook his head and it continued. “They were the herb of Venus, the Goddess of Love in the ancient days. Hanakotoba, or language of flowers, was used to convey what words could not in so many cultures. That is why flowers are a widely common gift.”

In their fingers they twirled a stem full of pale blue petal flowers with a soft yellow interior. Noe counts the petals, counting to five, and the amount of buds, counting to ten with there being clusters of five. The petals themselves remind him of mouse ears.

He's seen these flowers before. He's not sure where.

“These are powerful beings. There was once a story of two lovers who walked alongside a river. The man saw these flowers and knew he wanted his lover to have them. So, he went down to the river's edge to retrieve them, but he fell and the current swept him away. As he was dragged, he exclaimed “don't forget me!” And the woman wore those flowers till she could meet him in death.”

Noè sighed. “That's tragic.”

The being hummed warmly. “Yes, but from that day these held powerful meaning. These signify love and remembrance. Also great protection and good luck charms. They bloom as these vibrant blues and then shift to a hue of pink. The reason is unknown, but perhaps it signifies something about one's bond. Or perhaps, of the person themselves.” The being reaches over and tucks his hand over the stem. “They are a perfect gift. Trust me.”

For whatever the reason may have been, Noè did trust them. He was swayed by the story and their wise voice, but also the meaning. Remembrance. He liked it.

Noe thanked them with a bow and took his leave. He looked down at the flowers in his hand and brought them to his nose. No scent. Noè is sure Vanitas would appreciate that, but he finds himself a bit disappointed.

Domi was furious when he came back. He apologized over and over and eventually she settled on wrapping her arm through his.

Noe found a bouquet of the same flowers and paid for them. The older man's eyes wrinkled as he smiled. “Forget-me-nots. A beautiful, yet poisonous flower. Keep away from pets who may wish to eat ‘em.” Hopefully Murr will keep away, Noè mused to himself.

By the time Domi had finished her end of shopping, it was nightfall. She needed to return home, leaving Noè to walk the rest of the way by himself.

In the moon's glow, Noè spotted a glimpse of black figure perched on the roof. It brought a smile to his face and he climbed up the stairs to their shared apartment, through the window and up to meet his friend.

“I do hope those aren't for me.” Vanitas said without taking his gaze from the sky.

Noè chuckled and slumped down next to him. “They are. It's a present for your birthday.” Noè didn't wait for an answer. He placed the bouquet on Vanitas’s lap with hope that underneath the prickly surface he'd like them.

Vanitas holds them up to inspect and chuckles “Ne m'oublie pas. Asters. Fascinating choice, Noè. Did Domi pick them out?” Vanitas smirked.

Noè shook his head with pride. “No, I picked them myself.” Though I had help, Noè thought.

Noe half expected some witty comeback, but instead Vanitas softly smiled and said. “Thank you.” Pride flooded Noè, he began to shake with the need to burst. “I was worried at first you'd get me something obnoxiously of bad taste and useless. But these aren't bad. I'm shocked.” Noè felt slapped and complimented at the same time. At least it vanquished his need to burst.

Noè chuckled. “Domi told me once that I had bad tastes too.”

Before Vanitas could speak, the sky started to fall. Stars raced across the sky, leaving a trail of light in their wake. One after the other they fell towards the horizon, like a flock of birds coming home after a long winter.

They both stared gawking up at the stars as they passed by them. For a few moments the world stood still and it was just them and stars. Everything else didn't seem to matter in that short amount of time, not even their own names. A moment Noè has never forgotten.

That birthday, as strange as it may seem, out of the rare couple I got to experience, I cherish the most. I am unsure if Vanitas understood. At the time, I suppose I didn't fully understand either. Vanitas was always much better at figuring things out before I ever could.

We watched those stars pass for what felt like forever, yet also fleeted away too quickly. We remained on that roof, like we had so many times before and so many times after, and just enjoyed the night sky before the night came to an end.

Vanitas placed those flowers in a vase by his bed. Memory serves, they lasted forever. Perhaps till the moment Vanitas died, did they wither away too.

Those flowers. The "I'll never forget you". For how could I?

No passage of time that passes seems to relieve the ache I feel when I wake up from my dreams. I could go days, months even, where I don't even think of your name. Then my subconscious tortures me with dreams of possible realities where you are still around. They lure me to stay asleep just a little bit more just so I can see your face.

But it's not your face.

Nothing could ever compare to real thing. Dreams are a farce and vicious little things.

The heartache. The longing. The desperate pleading from my deep agony paralyzes me for the first moments of waking.

Is this grief? Do I grieve you so desperately that you and only you can shake me with a simple illusion. Or is this torture? Showing me what more I could have done to make you stay.

Whatever it may be. Forgetting about you is something my body and mind could slip into on busy days. But my soul never could. For a piece of yours touched mine so gently once, then decided to remain with me forever.

It's small and quiet, encased by shadows of my own. Whenever those shadows get too big, it whispers. Do these whispers make me feel better? No. They hurt. There was a time you caused me joy, were my light in the world, and now you cause me pain. Why? Why have you done this? Please, someone take it away. No, but if they did, then you'd be gone. I'd rather feel this horrible agony. This despicable tragedy over and over because if I do, you are with me again. Just for a moment. Oh, for a sweet moment.

I'll never forget you. My dearest friend. I will carry this burden with a heavy heart and a raised chin. For I loved you. I am humbled by the knowledge you loved me, once, too.

I always write to you. Perhaps you will scold me when we meet again in a much kinder world to you.

Usually you go to 'hunt' vampires to be treated withVanitas and Noè

In your free time you two go and visit beautiful places together tasting the typical dishes every now and then Noè will come to make the third wheel

B eauty - What do they admire about their s/o? What do they think is beautiful about them?

He loves everything about you but the thing that physically prefers are your eyes

He just loves to get lost in them and remember that these beautiful eyes belong to his better half

C omfort - How would they help their s/o when they feel down/have a panic attack etc.?

I have the hc that Vanitas, because of his past, often suffers from panic attacks so in his own way he would know well how to behave.

He’ll wait until you’re ready to talk and look him in the eye.

If you can’t, he understands it perfectly.

Without speaking, he will put a blanket on your shoulders and prepare you a tea that will leave near you that will serve to calm down.

D reams - How do they picture their future with their s/o?

He will never admit it but he has already made a lot of mental movies about your future life together: He will be a world-famous doctor in the world of vampires, you will be his beautiful, intelligent and lovable wife and together you will have two children, a male and a female.

... yeah, we can say that he has a lively imagination

E qual - Are they the dominant one in the relationship, or rather passive?

Dominant, he loves to annoy you and 'ruin' your day with his horrible jokes, maybe sometime he would even say dirty jokes😇

BUT If you get tired of his dirty and not dirty jokes and you can respond properly, you can see his cheeks blush and see Vanitas that becomes a lovely tsundere

F ight - Would they be easy to forgive their s/o? How are they fighting?

Usually you two never fight except for bullshit and therefore are useless quarrels that end in one/two minutes.

But if the fight is serious... it’s gonna be a little messy.

If it’s his fault, surely Noè can reason with him in one way or another.

If it’s your fault, it depends on your character!

But once you apologize to him ( and if it wasn’t particularly bad) he will forgive you after an hour or two and you will be back to being the usual couple.

If it’s serious, it’ll take a while, maybe a month or two, but don’t worry, he’ll take care of you without being noticed

G ratitude - How grateful are they in general? Are they aware of what their s/o is doing for them?

He’s grateful, but his pride will never allow him to admit it in front of everyone.

But I’m sure he’ll tell you when you two are alone at a special time or when you’re asleep.

H onesty - Do they have secrets they hide from their s/o? Or do they share everything?

He has few secrets he hides from you.

But these few are the worst, they all talk about his past and he’s afraid that if you found out, you might not love him anymore and leave him.

I nspiration - Did their s/o change them somehow, or the other way around? Like trying out new things or helped them overcome personal problems?

Yeah. Yeah, he does.

K iss - Are they a good kisser? What was the first kiss like?

we all saw how he kissed Jeanne, right?

Yes, yes, yes and yes. I allready said yes? Vanitas has a natural talent for being good at kissing.

Your first kiss with Vanitas was natural and not forced at all, it was very soft and with a touch of malice which made everything perfect.

L ove Confession - How would they confess to their s/o?

His confession was... a little peculiar.

He confessed after a life-or-death situation in which you were very close to death.

He was really afraid of losing you, so as soon as you recovered he took courage and confessed to you as the sun went down leaving room for the beautiful blue moon.

M arriage - Do they want to get married? How do they propose? What would the marriage be like?

Of course he does, he wants to be with you all his life (as I said earlier, he has made many mental movies about it).

He’d probably propose with a nice silver ring with a sapphire set.

Oh Lord, on the night of the proposal he would be so nervous and embarrassed.

He took you out on the terrace of a beautiful restaurant, and my God, you could easily see that that night he blushed for the least.

Obviously Noè and Dominique will be disguised as waiters to check that vanitas doesn’t mess up

At the end of the dinner, while you were on the balcony admiring the full moon, he knelt down, his face completely red (he is not used to these things, poor dear) and finally he will propose to you.

"W-Will you marry me, y/n."

You will say your yes and only then you will see the whole crowd (Noè, Dominique, Jeanne, Dante, Johann, Riche, Oliver and Roland) applauding and shouting with joy putting both of you embarrassed.

N icknames - What do they call their s/o?

“Princess/prince” “my girl/boy” and somethime even “my love”

O n Cloud Nine - What are they like when they are in love? Is it obvious for others? How do they express their feelings?

He has never experienced love in his life, so this strong feeling leaves him a little stunned.

He was so stunned that for a while he tried to avoid you in every way, he tried to oppress the desire to see you and be close to you.

At first you thought you had done something wrong, it was a huge relief for you when Noè said that vanitas was trying to avoid you 'just' because he had such a great love for you that he didn’t know how to behave.

Slowly Vanitas became accustomed to this feeling, to the point where he could not do without it.

he was always clinging to you and one way or another you always ended up having dinner or lunch together. He just can’t help loving you.

P DA - Are they upfront about their relationship? Do they brag with their s/o in front of others? Or are they rather shy to kiss etc. when others are watching?

He has no problem showing you to others, on the contrary, he boasts of having the best s/o in the world

Definitely his medical skills.

If you’re hurt, he won’t hesitate for a second to come and cure you

Usually when you’re with other people it’s more flirty than romantic.

But when you two are alone, you’ll have a pampering-thirsty Vanitas that’s sticking to you 24-7

In his own way, he’s empathetic and very understanding.

He’s a little childish, but he knows when to be serious, and he would never allow himself to hurt you.

is very important. He needs to be with you, he have to be with you.

Yes, as already mentioned many times he thought of your future wedding with him many times, imagine how you would look beautiful with a wedding dress.

Surely, he would like to have a family with you. A new chapter in his life with you.

He wants and will always be at your side even if sometimes he needs to be alone.

The case study of the tarte tatin and love

II’ll start by saying that I haven’t read the manga yet so this theory is purely based on ep. 7 of the anime.

So, Noè got pretty excited when he saw the tarte tatin and was so happy that he even took the plate from the table to show it to Vanitas. He was truly precious for that and we all know it.

After that, Vanitas goes from looking at Noè to looking at his own plate. Here, I was thinking that he was pondering whether to give his slice of tarte tatin to Noè so he could keep seeing those sparkly eyes and that happy expression on Noè.

Vanitas first takes a small bite of it and declares that it’s too sweet for him, then slides his plate to Noè who’s indeed happy to get another portion of the tarte. Watching it the first time, it felt as if Vanitas was giving himself an excuse so he could give Noè the tarte tatin. However, as the episode went on, this whole scene became a metaphor for love.

Some time later, we have Noè and Vanitas talking about what love is. We have the revelation that Vanitas likes Jeanne and among the reasons why he likes her, Vanitas says “It doesn’t seem like she’ll ever love me.” Noè is taken aback by the statement and asks “If you love someone, don’t you want them to love you back?” but Vanitas keeps saying he doesn’t need to love her back and that’s because he’s not interested in the kind of person who would love him.

This brought me back to the tarte tatin.

The two plates are like Vanitas and Noè’s idea of love.

Noè sees love as “loving someone and wanting them to love you back”, so it’s as if he wants the whole love thing and he wants it to be sweet.

Vanitas thinks that “love can be one-sided”. Taking one bite is enough for him. Eating the whole thing would be too sweet and just too much. He’s okay with getting a taste of love and then leave it to someone else.

In other words, using Jeanne as a reference (who seems to be the object of their interest), it could be translated as such.

Vanitas is taking a bite of this love for Jeanne for the sake of tasting it, just to know how it feels. He doesn’t need nor want the whole thing so, whenever the time comes, he’s ready to let Jeanne go. He’s ready to “give” her to someone who will love her and “eat her” whole. To him, that someone would be Noè who can easily have the whole love thing.

And this is my theory about the tarte tatin. I’m aware that it could be total bs and I could be reading too much into things but it was interesting to have the tarte scene popping in my head when VaNoè were talking about love hehe

What's worring me more about noè being cut out by sade and teacher is he will get persecution because he's archiviste. He didn't got problems until now beacuse teacher's status and secrety but nothing woundn't stop sade/teacher expose him

Do we know for sure that the Archivistes are or were persecuted?

We know that they were wiped out at some point in the past (or at least that people seem to think they were wiped out), but I don't believe we've been given any details. We don't know whether they were killed purposefully due to their powers, or if they died out in some other circumstance. We don't even know what's commonly believed about how they died, regardless of whether the publicly known version is the truth. Nox just says they "perished long ago," and unless I'm forgetting something major, that's the end of it.

It's unclear whether the wiping-out of their clan was due to persecution, and we also haven't seen many other signs of persecution beyond their deaths (or causes for them to be persecuted). It's true that people don't all like the idea of having their memories seen, and especially not without consent, but that doesn't necessarily translate to all the Archivistes being despised either. I can think of quite a few reasons the senate, for instance, might find a use for them, which could have given them status and power. Or it could lead to them being despised by those in power, because a deceptive Archiviste could reveal their secrets to the world. We simply don't know.

And regarding Noé's past, he was "auctioned as an Archiviste survivor," but I don't think that necessarily means anything about the treatment of the Archivistes back when they were alive. Noé was already being human trafficked when they realized his status, after all. Of course his traffickers were going to take advantage of the fact that he was an Archiviste, because they're all dead, and that makes him a unique item (which makes him profitable). "The last living vampire with the power to see memories" is an easy thing to market, but that doesn't mean those same traffickers would be prejudiced against an adult Archiviste should they encounter one in different circumstances.

Noé can't even really keep his status a secret, since anyone that knows anything about Archivistes knows that they had dark skin and pale hair. As shown with Chloé, anyone knowledgeable that sees him will immediately suspect.

So overall, while it's certainly possible that losing the protection of his teacher could bring trouble for Noé in vampire society, it's not certain that he'd be persecuted as an Archiviste. There's really too much uncertainty about the issue to say much about it right now.

Vampire society revolution

I really hope this happen in universe of VNC but I know possibilities are very low because it is a manga that talk about vampires.

It is very hard in vampire stories not being classist, despite the presence of unfair society because main characters benefit from that, and rebels are usually greed power(for example first Blade movie). Only story I remember the main character turned in rebel, it is Underground.

And because Japanise society is still pretty classist, I don't remember a lot mangas that take part of rebels.

For example in Vampire Knight , ordinary vampires were still loyal to purebloods and senate despite being the source of all their problems.

In VNC we can see how much is unfair vampire society, which also explains why vampires take risk to live in human world.

1)A corrupt Senate who make very clear difference approach in base of social class. Amelia and Loki are both curse-bearers, but Amelia was kept in prison and in chains like animal for caution, and if vanitas failed to show his ability of cure, she 'd be killed.

Loki despite being a curse-bearers, not only his life is spared but he lives confortably.

2)Members of senate who protect Naemia, the source of curses, Same people who collaborate with Church in horrible experiment on vampires.

3)Bourreau, children of traitors who need to pay for sin of their parents by fighing forever until their death. They can escape from this destiny only if they become a knight, which means by be liked by powerful vampire.

4)slaves,i don't need to say more

5) Genocide of twins(which we don't know why)

6) Rid off of Archiviste clan. I know it is not confermed but because most vampires live in Altus ,it is more probably the attack was from other vampires.And because Archiviste's power maybe they found out unconfortable truth,

7) A govement has never tried to cure the curse-bearers, a respectable govement who'd work their bu^^s hard for looking a solution

8) They are making decisions that 'd turn in a war ( I blame also Church), which that will affect commun vampires.

9) If truth about naemia or doctor Moreau come out, there is no way there wouldn't be a revolt.

But I really think a revolution in VNC would be a great plot twist and would give a lot character development to main vampires, and possible allies for Vanitas.

Thinking of Jeanne meets an another bourreau who reprimands her cause she still serve a corrupt senate who using them like tool for killing in fact more dissidents or innocents than real enemies.

Being looking down because bourreau make the dirty job.

But because Luca is nice with her,nothing matters.

Noè really faces the situation of his clan and slavery. Don't matter what somebody did, nobody deserve a genocide or becoming a slave.

Domi understands she doesn't want serve ideals of her family, who protect only status quo. Finding out the real reaction why twins are cursed and not being anymore "Louis should be alive." but " Why don't both us deserve to live a good life?"

Vanitas finding out more allies,now main character don't have a stand agaist charlatan, not in force or political power.

Come on , we are in France, a country of revolutions! And like a say revolution plot in a royal vampire story is very rare.

I want this revolution be like " Revolution become violent when peaceful way failed" and " People shouldn't be afraid of govement, but it should." No like no" both side are right and oppressed part is whining."
