I think I have a potentially controversial opinion on Aziraphale and the ending.
So one of the things that made me smile so, SO much, was THIS:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
That PURE ABSOLUTE UTTER JOY.
We have not seen ANYTHING like that from demon Crowley. We've seen him be drunk and silly, we've seen him be amused, but we've not seen this.
Now, let's consider what we know about Heaven:
It's never fully populated. ALL of the shots are completely devoid of angels, except for a few, who are almost always just getting somewhere and never really talking to each other.
Where I thought the archangels were a tight clan, it really looks like they're super catty and prone to jealousy. No doubt they would stab each other in the back happily if it came down to it. How much of Heaven is like that, if even the archangels all hate each other?
Aziraphale already has a nervous disposition when he meets Crowley. Is he perhaps an angel that NEVER fit in? Is he familiar with being ostracized by his peers? Just how lonely IS Heaven? Crowley seems to be a pretty powerful angel, and HE doesn't even know that it's all getting shut down in 6000 years -- it's like no one talks to anyone.
Aziraphale, during their whole meeting, looks absolutely smitten. At one point, Crowley goes, "Look at you! You're gorgeous!" and Aziraphale looks over with happy surprise, just before realizing he's not looking at him but rather at what he's created. And then, when Crowley starts going on about making suggestions and asking questions, Aziraphale is IMMEDIATELY concerned and doesn't want him to get into trouble.
Aziraphale is hooked on this angel, and I cannot help but think that this is perhaps the first angel who has ever WELCOMED Aziraphale into his company.
He is hooked on this angel, and the way Crowley smiles is with the light of all the stars he's just created, and it's infectious and it brings a smile to Aziraphale's face as well. And then this angel shields him from the oncoming falling stars.
He is hooked on this angel, and then this angel goes and joins the Great Rebellion, and becomes fallen himself.
"You were an angel once," Aziraphale said, softly, at the bandstand. He remembers.
I think it's reasonable to guess that Heaven has never felt so warm as it did in the presence of millions of exploding stars, next to the (arch?)angel that may perhaps be one of the few (only?) to pay him any positive attention.
I think it's reasonable to assume that Heaven was not the same after Crowley fell. I wouldn't be surprised to find out Aziraphale had wondered about the angel, wondered if he was okay. I would imagine that Aziraphale keeps that picture of pure, angelic, unbridled joy somewhere inside of him.
So, really, is it any surprise that threaded throughout EVERY interaction, Aziraphale has this deep-down feeling that Crowley is good? Would it be any surprise that Aziraphale, an angel who goes along with Heaven as far as he can (which isn't always), feels that if HE is still an angel, then what was done to Crowley was a great injustice?
I think it would make sense that we are shown "before the beginning" not just because it is fun, but because THIS is the foundational context for everything Aziraphale thinks Crowley is, everything Crowley enjoys. I think he remembers this moment and wishes he could live there forever. With Crowley. The two of them with this happiness, forever.
But nothing lasts forever, as much as he wishes it did.
I'm not saying Aziraphale was right with what he did to Crowley at the end of s2. There is a lot I think he did wrong. I think he held onto this picture so tightly, he didn't realize that Crowley had long since let it go, and painted a new one with Aziraphale with all the shades of grey he picked up as he sauntered (or plummeted) vaguely downward (into a pool of boiling sulfur).
I don't think he was right, but I do think he is understandable. I think there was a lot of selfishness, but also some misguided selflessness too. I watched that first scene with angelic Crowley and my heart actually broke a little, because I thought, "What a shame this joy was taken away from him."
I think Aziraphale is trying to right the injustice he feels has been done. But I also think Aziraphale doesn't realize that Crowley can never go back. The concept of falling never crossed Crowley's mind when he suggested that he ask a few questions, and he will NEVER get that kind of innocence back. And Aziraphale doesn't understand, because Heaven has clearly always just been that way for him (he is already aware of the danger of asking questions).
Crowley does not want to go back because he can never go back. He can never be the same angel he was when he thought he could build a universal machine that would crank out stars for eons and eons. He can never be the same angel he was when he thought he could make some suggestions and ask some questions and co-create with THE Creator.
Crowley understands that, and Aziraphale doesn't. But I can understand why Aziraphale would want to try. And I think it's all because of this:

It's a 2-man Con
Listen, I think I know a thing.
When Aziraphale comes back from talking to the Metatron and is telling Crowley about being an angel, we've all heard the theory that he's speaking code, trying to ask for help. The more I look at that scene, the more that theory tracks.
Maybe less well-known is the theory that Crowley didn't miss a damn thing, he's answering in his own code. And again, the more I look at that scene, the more this also tracks.
(When my husband, annoyingly observant beloved partner that he is, saw the second season for the first time, he said, "That whole thing was a show for the Metatron. They have a plan. Crowley slipped something to Aziraphale when he kissed him." And I said, "Nah." But now I think he's right, and damn if he isn't smug.)
I'm gonna try to break down what I think they're saying here, because it takes just a hot minute to piece it together. I've been thinking this over for a couple of months now. I think I have most of it. I just don't know when Crowley puts whatever he's handing to Aziraphale in his own mouth. I need more eagle-y eyes, it seems.
First, Aziraphale comes back from his talk. He's pensive as he crosses the road, and anxious when he starts talking, and mouths "I need help!" as he's talking. He's acting like he does when he lies to the other angels, and once it's seen "I need help!" is pretty clear.
Tumblr media
He does the whole thing about telling Crowley he could appoint him as an angel, like old times, but even nicer. It's all very uptight and not positive at all. My interpretation? "The Metatron is here, I think he knows we're up to something, we have to go to Heaven right now and put things right before he really does something awful to one or both of us. The time to spring the plan is NOW."
Tumblr media
Crowley stares at him. At first it seems like he's staring in disbelief, but if you really look at his face, he's listening, hard, and interpreting as fast as he can:
Tumblr media
He asks Aziraphale if he told the Metatron where he could stick it, then. My interpretation? "The plan has changed. I can't go with you to Heaven. You'll have to go alone."
Then Crowley starts his confession -- "We've spent our existence pretending we aren't."
Aziraphale looks at him -- not with shock, or surprise, or love, or hope, but with a "Why are you doing this now?" face. Not "Why did you wait til now to tell me, you love me, oh, I love you too!" But "Why are you telling me SOMETHING I ALREADY KNOW while our ENEMY IS LISTENING??" :
Tumblr media
He's confused, but also listening and interpreting. What I'm hearing/seeing: I don't think this is a love confession from our demon. I think they are both well aware they love one another. They can't say it in so many words, and it's a secret from Heaven and Hell, but it's not a secret between them. I'm hearing Crowley set the scene. "The Metatron either wants us together in Heaven under control, or separated. I have things I have to do here or the plan won't work, so we'll have to separate. We need to make it look good. I do love you."
I don't think Aziraphale likes this change of plan. And Crowley can't detail why the plan has changed, not with the Metatron listening. So Aziraphale insists, come with me. The plan we had will work. Do it my way. Crowley says, "You can't leave this book shop." It's easy to interpret that as "You can't leave me," but I don't think it's that. He's saying something about the book shop being safe, or even that he can't leave without whatever they've hidden in the book shop. (I THINK THEY HID SOMETHING IN THE BOOK SHOP!) Aziraphale says, "Nothing lasts forever." I hear him saying the book shop is no longer safe, and they have to move/take whatever they've hidden and they can't speak freely there anymore.
Crowley replies, "No I suppose it doesn't. Good luck." He's gotten that much, but he is still set on his "We need to fake a break up because I can't go with you."
Aziraphale still doesn't like that. "Come back! I need you!" He's scared. Whatever he has to do in Heaven is big, and scary, and he needs and wants Crowley with him. He does not want to go into the mouth of danger alone.
This is when we get, "No nightingales." What I'm hearing? ESPECIALLY since if you listen, you can hear a LARK sing as Crowley goes out the door? It's the line from Romeo and Juliet, by Shakespeare, whose plays they both enjoy, though Crowley prefers the funny ones. "It's too late, that's a lark singing the dawn, not a nightingale singing to the night, we have to part. Our happy ending isn't yet."
Then the kiss. I do not believe this is their first kiss. I don't believe they've allowed themselves many, maybe not even more than one, but I do think they've kissed before. I'm not sure when, but I suspect 1941. (Season 3, come ON!!)
And when they part, Aziraphale stops himself from saying "I love you," and instead says, "I forgive you." I'm hearing so many things in that "I forgive you." I forgive you for leaving me on my own, I forgive you for hurting my feelings like this, I forgive you for changing the plan without telling me, I forgive you because you are forgivable whatever anyone else says, I forgive you because that's what I said when we split up at the bandstand and everything was okay in the end and I hope hope hope that everything will be okay in the end this time too.
Crowley says, "Don't bother." I'm hearing, "yeah, I hope it's all okay, too. Wish me fuckin luck. My part will be hard, too."
And as Crowley leaves, Aziraphale mouths, "No." And we hear a lark sing. A lark, singing to the dawn, and so fair Romeo must away.
Just because the break up is a ruse, doesn't mean it doesn't hurt and isn't hard. It has to look real, and so it's going to feel real, too. Ouch. :'(
And then Aziraphale touches his lips. Not once, but twice. My bad, he only touches his lips once. The first long second is pure emotion. "Why now, I hate this, I want that so badly and I can't have it."
After that, though --
Tumblr media
After he pulls himself together a bit, he has a bulge in his cheek. He shifts his jaw to move whatever he has in his mouth to his lips, and then his first two fingers go stiff for a moment as he palms something right before he takes his hand away.
And then, this.
Edit to add: someone on Facebook asked me why a kiss to pass whatever Crowley gave to Aziraphale, why not palm it or drop it in his pocket?
My answers: 1. The kiss is a message. "We're still good, I still love you, I still want this." 2. The item is too important to be dropped in a pocket and hopefully found later. 3. The Metatron is paying WAY too close attention, and will definitely see them touch hands. Seeing a kiss and the angel rejecting the demon, though? Well, the demon forced that kiss on him, the angel didn't want it. Clearly the demon thinks this relationship is different than it is. It's a bigger gesture that sells the ruse. 4. Houdini's wife used to pass him the keys to his cuffs with a kiss before the show. This is a message that magic-loving Aziraphale WILL understand: here are the keys to your cuffs, sneaked to you by your beloved in plain sight.
That's it. That's what I got so far. I still have questions.
What did Crowley pass to Aziraphale? What's the plan? Why did it change? What does Crowley need to do that he can't go to Heaven again?

As a film person, this is the most f*cked up thing that happened in all of Good Omens
Tumblr media
Forget about the final 15. If there's anything that should convince you that there's something really wack going on in season 2 of Good Omens it should be this cut. I literally gasped when I saw it for the first time. It's SO BAD from a technical perspective. Because you've probably been watching TV and movies your whole life, you might instinctively feel there's something weird happening with this cut, but not be able to put your finger on what it is.
I am here to tell you: they sacrificed continuity of action to *change the main character of the shot in the middle of the scene*. I won't do a full theory course on filmmaking here, but basically, when you want a fluid-feeling sequence of shots, especially when there's quite a lot of movement on screen, you have to conserve the direction and intention of that action to feel like it's all one take, and time is moving forward like we're used to in real life. Here, Crowley, Maggie and Nina all leave the Bookshop together, with Crowley and Maggie flanking Nina, who is centred in the shot. They are moving towards the camera as the camera is walking backwards, but at a slight curve camera-left. Crowley even turns his head and swings his arm left, making us feel like the camera will keep Nina center, and pan left or even cut wider to see more of the left of the street to watch them cross.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Well SURPRISE, idiots!
Forget everything you learned in film school because we're cutting immediately to a second medium length shot of the 3 characters from a slightly more camera-right perspective for no reason whatsoever, in the *opposite* direction of where the action is going, WHILE THAT ACTOR IS SPEAKING A LINE. This is so counterintuitive to the blocking of the scene that Maggie literally gets shoved out of frame while we're supposed to be reading her reaction to Crowley's dialogue. I can't stress enough how weird it is on a fundamental level. When a camera is moving and a character is talking, conserving continuity of action is THE ONE thing you don't sacrifice. It pulls people out of the moment, and makes it extra obvious that multiple takes have been stitched together. Which leads me to think that this is intentional, and sets up what I hinted to at the beginning of this whole "The More You Know" moment : Nina is the main character of the scene we're watching, until, suddenly, Crowley is. If you separated those two moments before and after the cut and watch them as two different scenes, you can see the camera following Nina and keeping her center before, but directly following Crowley and keeping him center *after* the cut. We've switched narrators in this moment. And to top it all off, they're making it pretty obvious that, while Nina is listening and reacting to both Crowley and Maggie, Crowley does not give a rat's ass about the two humans (not either not really in frame, or cut off behind him).

Welcome back to Alex's unhinged meta corner - although today it is less unhinged and more of a watertight analysis.
What I am about to present you is something most people have probably already noticed, but it has been three months and I still lose my mind while going through the final fifteen frame by frame (which is a normal thing normal people like us do, right? right).
You literally cannot convince me my following meta is wrong, and the only person whose criticism I will accept on this post is Michael Sheen and Michael Sheen ONLY. If you're not Michael Sheen (hi Michael Sheen who probably has a secret tumblr account) then your guess is as good as mine, though again, I think mine is solid.
So.
We all love and hate Aziraphale's "I forgive you", but what I find even more painful is the fact that before that he almost said "I love you". Then he stops himself and changes it, and the amount of micro-expressions on his face as he makes that decision is my current cause of death.
Here's the clip as evidence #1, and while it can definitely support itself, let's dive into the pain a little more, shall we?
One important thing I noticed is that Aziraphale doesn't look at Crowley while he stutters his way through his initial reaction. He blinks up at him for a few frames before averting his eyes again and only holds eye contact after the almost-confession (from here on referred to as IL-).
This is Aziraphale holding eye contact with Crowley (left) vs. him looking away (right):
Tumblr media
The frame on the left is from the I forgive you (IFY) part of the scene, the other one from right before IL-. If we go through the above clip little by little we will find that he avoids Crowley's face the entire time and his gaze slips further and further down, which I interpret as him overthinking/trying to come up with something to respond to this entire situation.
He is overwhelmed and surprised, caught between his two main desires: Crowley and being a Good Angel.
Combing through the frames, we can actually nail down exactly when Aziraphale first makes eye contact before the IL- and when he stops. Keep the above comparison in mind! The angle is slightly different because his chin is lower and he straightens up throughout the scene.
So! This is where he starts looking at Crowley:
Tumblr media
And this is where he stops:
Tumblr media
Hard to see? Let's zoom in on his eyes (numbers are the file names):
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Now, you might ask me "Alex, this is all fine, although a bit insane, but why is any of this important?"
Because, fellow tumblr user and good omens enthusiast, I think that looking at Crowley is what changes his mind about what to say.
He doesn't look at him -> about to confess his feelings.
He looks at him -> says the absolutely worst possible thing.
Partly to hurt him because they're both lashing out at each other during this argument, but he looks at Crowley, looks at the person that just kissed him, that told him they could have been an us, that wants him and has always wanted him, screw everyone else.
He looks at Crowley and he wants to say l love you but then what? Once he says those words, he can't leave. He just can't.
We have to remember that they have existed within a complicated dance, a game that they have been playing for centuries without ever telling each other what that game actually is, what the rules are - because they couldn't. It was based entirely on trust and knowing the other person well enough to play it safe.
Crowley just flipped the playing board. Nothing is the way it should be, he is refusing to do their dance, refusing to play. He is looking at him and daring him to stop trying to put the pieces back on the board. The only thing neither of them has done yet is actually say I love you out loud.
Saying those words would mean stepping away from the playing board and acknowledging the room they have been playing in. It would mean saying fuck you to heaven, yes, but it would also force Aziraphale to finally define himself outside of the role he has been playing for both Crowley and heaven, and he isn't ready for that yet.
Additionally, there is the fear and/or knowledge (depending on what else the Metatron might have said or done that we did not see) that heaven will retaliate against him and Crowley if he disobeys them now, and he does not want to risk that either.
All that is what, in my opinion, happens in his head when he averts his eyes and interrupts himself. I do kinda what to make a whole different post about his facial expressions leading up to the IFY, so I will end this one with one more bit of pain.
Ready?
Firstly, the face he makes when he makes his decision.
Tumblr media
Look at the tight line of his lips, the pain etched into his face, the pure pain in his eyes.
This is the face of someone who knows exactly how badly he is going to hurt Crowley and himself. This is an apology, an I'm sorry for what I'm about to do, this hurts me as much as it hurts you. I'm sorry but I have to.
Tumblr media
And then he winces afterwards. I don't know about you, but this is exactly the kind of face I make when I'm emotionally torturing myself with my own thoughts. For the final blow, please look at the picture very, very closely, especially the last frame, because Aziraphale isn't just sorry and he isn't just in pain.
Aziraphale is scared because he knows* that he might lose Crowley over this. He knows that saying I forgive you is (almost) unforgivable. He KNOWS.
He does it anyway because he will lose Crowley either way but he'd rather have him alive and hating him than dead.
With that I am concluding today's unhinged meta corner, thank you for your attention and you're welcome for the pain.
Also: If you want to call me a 'tin hatter' or insane or otherwise make fun of me - this is very much a girl, what were YOU doing at the devil's sacrament moment because you read my meta post all the way to the end. <3
-
*authors note: what Aziraphale thinks he knows and what is actually real is not the same thing but that's a different post

The Ineffable Ducks
Tumblr media
What's with all the ducks in Good Omens that Crowley seems to be inordinately fond of? Turns out, they do have a narrative purpose, they're not just in there as a running joke about Crowley's fondness for the animals of Earth.
They appear in both S1 and S2, and get mentioned in several seemingly random places. Like, really random. There are quite a few in St James Park, where the ducks live, where the international spies also clandestinely meet, where Aziraphale and Crowley meet on several occasions, and where Crowley and Shax have a meeting, exchanging information in S2E1.
Tumblr media
Ducks also get referred to here, when Aziraphale suggests they use humans to search and spy out the missing Antichrist, but Crowley insists it will be near impossible because suspicion slides off the boy like water off, what ever water slides off, because he has an automatic defense system.
Tumblr media
The he remembers the ducks(!) later in the Bentley when they discuss using their respective networks of highly trained human operatives (Shadwell and the Witchfinder army), and Aziraphale asks if Crowley has a better idea than his. "Ducks!" Crowley suddenly utters.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The ducks that are always there, that you see but don't see, gathering bread crumbs, when any kind of surveillance or secret spy work is being discussed.
Nah, I thought, it couldn't be a sly ref to this famous cartoon by Larson, could it?
Tumblr media
Aziraphale and Crowley are always afraid that someone is watching, or listening to everything they do, from both sides. I mean isn't that partly why we got the ending we did in S2, because they have had to be so covert with their communication to each over the centuries they've forgotten how to speak plainly to each other?
Heaven has definitely been watching...
Tumblr media
And Hell certainly noticed Crowley's act of kindness in the Edinburgh cemetery, swiftly summoning him to Hell for punishment after his kind deed on behalf of Elspeth.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Then when the duo meet in again 1867 Crowley wonders if "ducks have ears" before declaring they must do - that's how they hear other ducks. So its no surprise that when Crowley asks Aziraphale for holy water that he writes the request on a piece of paper to hide it from those invisible ever-present watchers they know are never far away.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
When we come to the start of S2, where Crowley is slouched in St James Park once more, reading the Tadfield Advertiser, and yelling at the Azerbaijani secret agents for feeding the ducks bread. Crumbs, it was alright to do this in the book, and S1, why is wrong now? Has Crowley suddenly become woke and caring for the ducks? Nah.
Tumblr media
There's a lot more to it than that. I realized this is the missing Grain offering from my post about altar offerings (see The Altar of Eccles Cakes) in S2. A Grain offering represents a voluntary expression of devotion to God - or the other side you're supposed to be aligned with, in this case.
Shax is part of this scene, discussing the latest news from below, and she mentions some special intel that Hell has received, from their own secret squirrel network. Of course they would meet in St James Park to discuss this, along with all the other spies. While Shax tries to get some intel out of Crowley about what might be going on in Heaven, because she knows he has contact with a certain angel who owns a book shop, Crowley responds by refusing to show any devotion to his former side at this point, and isn't going to give any information away that could be useful. He also doesn't have any intel at this point, anyway, but he's not going to give that away either! Heaven and Hell are toxic, and no one should be going anywhere near them, in his opinion. So stop feeding them that devotional bread!
After Shax asks what they should be feeding the ducks, he eventually says "Frozen Peas. It's good for them, they like it."
Tumblr media
The short period of "peas" since they stopped the impending Apocalypse has been enjoyable, and good for Crowley and Aziraphale, but the forced meeting with Beelzebub later that day soon jolts Crowley out of any complacency when they indicate that the "generalized understanding" Crowley thought they had with Heaven and Hell after the body swap to leave them alone, the one Aziraphale-as-Crowley negotiated, while asking for a rubber duck, no less, was looking very shaky and fragile indeed.
Tumblr media
And one more random duck ref to discuss.
Tumblr media
I was inspired to write this section by lalalunamoth's post calling Muriel a duckling imprinted on Crowley, and of course I did not save it, did I, and a search does not bring it back up again (found it!), so if you're reading this, or know that post, please let me know! I read it, and thought, cute, but nah, then realized that Muriel was sent on a surveillance mission to Whickber St to ascertain the truth of Aziraphale's 25 lazurii miracle. And she did act as the eyes of Heaven, writing up some reports, called Crowley "grice," then followed him around during his escapade in Heaven just like a duckling following a grumpy gander drake while he did his own surveillance measures in a Tactical Turtle neck, channeling his best imitation Sean Connery voice (have you noticed that as well, people?)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
No, no, the op wasn't wrong - those big cross ducks, er grice geese, they make good guard dogs, no?
Tumblr media
With special mention to Crowley acting as a surveillance duck just prior to this, and Mr Brown doing his own "spying out" of Aziraphale.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To finish this meta, there is one other figure who notably offered the ducks bread, in the book. This passage, which is surely relevant to S3, but didn't appear in S1, shows another character still devoted to God in a way. Lets give Death the final word:
Crowley: "Maybe it's it's all part of a great ineffable plan. All of it. You, me, him, everything. Some great big test to see if what you've built all works properly, eh? You start thinking: it can't be a great cosmic game of chess, it has to be just very complicated Solitaire. And don't bother to answer. if we could understand, we wouldn't be us. Because it's all - all - "
INEFFABLE, said the figure feeding the ducks.
"Yeah. Right. Thanks."

hii!! Do you guys have any fanfic recommendations with that headcanon where everyone in SoHo is afraid to talk to Aziraphale because of his angry husband (crowley)? i also actually accept any indication of fanfics that look a little like that scene from S2 where Crowley goes to rescue Aziraphale in the pub
thank you in advance! I love your work on this tumblr, you are life savers. kisses xxx
Hello. Here are some Whickber Street fics featuring a protective Crowley...
A group of the two of us. by Mimisempai (G)
After what happened at the last shopkeepers' meeting, Mr. Brown asks Aziraphale to host another one, and this time a real one. Aziraphale agrees, but wants to do so well that he forgets to take care of himself. Fortunately, Crowley is there to remind him and lend a hand. However, this meeting may hold another surprise for the demon.
Brown's World Of Misguided Assumptions by WaitingToBeBroken (T)
Mr Brown, Brown's World of Carpets, is not a stranger to the criminal world. He can clearly tell that the man who has started to visit Mr. Fell down the road is up to no good. And he is desperate to help the kind bookseller escape the world of crime. Crowley, on the other hand, is unsure why this homophobic idiot is so insistent on bothering him.
Happy New Year, angel by Siobhans_world (T)
Aziraphale invites Crowley to a party thinking they're finally free to become 'an us'. Best friends turned into lovers. Little do they know Hell has promoted Shax to become the next representative for Hell in London. This short story is set between Season 1 and Season 2, explaining some of the unanswered questions; why Crowley never told Aziraphale he was living in his car and why they're so touchy-feely in Season 2.
Human expressions of love by Tossukka (M)
People in Aziraphale's neighbourhood unexpectedly start acting overly amorous towards him. Whatever the reason, it doesn't seem to affect Crowley's feelings at all, which could be explained either by him being a demon or by the non-magical attraction he has felt for the angel since ancient times. Between strangers writing Aziraphale terrible love poetry, Crowley trying to scare off the angel's suitors, and a trip to Tadfield to learn more about love spells, Crowley has to try his best to help Aziraphale solve the situation while keeping his own feelings in check.
Year of the Snake by RedThistle (T)
Mr. Fell is a sweet man (as long as you don’t try to buy his books). That’s undeniable. His partner on the other hand…well, less than savory assumptions have been made. 3 times a Soho resident thought Crowley was up to something very sinister + 1 time they knew he wasn’t.

🎂 twst 4th year anni rhythmic/twistune 🎂
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
***As the title says, spoilers for the new rhythmic/twistune under the cut!***
Tumblr media
AAAAAAAAAH, THEY'RE ALL GATHERED WITH THEIR FOOD AND DRINKS and cats😭 🍷🍸🍹🥂 (Quite honestly, the NRC staff NEED those drinks after dealing with all the troublemakers they teach/j)
I like that Vargas has a whole plate of eggs, it's very Gaston of him. Trein, meanwhile, is abstaining, which suits his personality as he's consistently the most disciplined and responsible of the teachers.
Tumblr media
asdbihlavslfiaafdavi CREWEL BEING SO ???? AT VARGAS FLEXING AT HIM... This makes total sense, they really come off like they clash (just like their tastes in fashion, as seen in Vargas Camp events)!
Tumblr media
Aw, they're toasting with each other 🥺
About halfway through, Crowley and Grim have a little dance in the center of the screen. Then the scene gets all these new glowy lights!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Sam tosses up a handful of confetti from his apron? And Grim is then so surprised he belches out some fire!! It's a very cute animation~
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
THIS LAST PART FUCKING KILLS ME So Crowley leaves the screen and wheels back this HUMONGOUS cake, right??? But then he and the other staff seem to use their magic to make the cake even bigger and fancier!
asfkhbwoifbiyoqpeof It makes me giggle because I'm thinking "damn, all Crowley is ever shown using his magic for is that ONE time he made a barrier in book 1 and then this cake magic" 😭 ALL THE POWER YOU SUPPOSEDLY HAVE AND YOU USE IT... FOR THIS... What a mood
An excellent sendoff to the 4th anniversary~

I don't have the energy right now to try to recreate the post I accidentally yeeted into the void, but I've been having lots of feelings about the ongoing fandom discussion of Aziraphale's decision at the end of S2.
I wasn't surprised by his decision at all. The minute he said "I think I might have misjudged the Metatron" I had an immediate, overwhelming feeling of "OH NO" because I saw exactly where the scene was going. And I was right! I felt zero surprise when the episode ended the way it did. (Devastation, yes. Surprise, no.)
Not only that, I was shocked at how shocked everyone else was. Because I grew up in a toxic religious community, of which I was a very devoted and enthusiastic member until young adulthood. So I have firsthand experience with that kind of indoctrination, and know exactly what a mindfuck it is.
Look, it's possible that there's something else going on under the surface, that Aziraphale was being coerced or that he was lying to Crowley in order to protect him or that he was trying to send Crowley a coded message and it failed or whatever. I'm not the creator of this story, I don't know. But what deeply distresses me is how often I've seen people say that it has to be one of those other things because if it isn't—if Aziraphale made his decision of his own free will because he actually believes that Heaven is the side of good, or at least that it once was and will be again if it can just solve the whole bad leadership problem—that means he's either unforgivably cruel or unforgivably ignorant or both.
It's a painful reminder for me, every time, of the fact that if you are the victim of this type of indoctrination, a lot of people will assume that it's your own fault for being gullible enough to believe such obviously ridiculous and wrong things. (Hint: it's only obvious from the outside! Because if you're on the outside, you are not having your mind directly and repeatedly fucked with!) Or that if you've been exposed to contradicting information, but you still continue to believe the things that were indoctrinated into you, it's because you're willfully choosing to stay clueless.
And that is just not how that works. Yes, some people cling to their indoctrination because they're genuinely happy with their lives as part of whatever institution, because it stacks the deck in their favor in some way, because they like having a respectable-sounding excuse to be bigoted jerks, or whatever. But there are also lots of people who have just legitimately had their minds twisted into pretzels by years or decades (or in Aziraphale's case, millennia) of mental conditioning and manipulation.
You can generally tell the difference between the two. At least, if you come from the kind of background I do, you can. But I imagine that even if you didn't, it's probably fairly obvious once you get to know people who is a shitty person using their religion as an excuse to be shitty, and who is a fundamentally decent person who has just had their mind so thoroughly fucked with that they've been manipulated into believing total bullshit.
And breaking the latter group out of their conditioning isn't as simple as just "show them information that contradicts what they've been taught," as much as we all wish it could be. It's a long, messy, and traumatic process. Your entire worldview falls apart and it's terrifying. You lose a community and an identity in the process. And there's often debilitating guilt afterward, about the person you were and the things you did and said while you were still in it.
So I watched the ending of S2 and my reaction was, "Well, of course Aziraphale said the things he said and made the decision he made, he's not free of his programming yet." It made all the sense in the world to me even as it was excruciatingly painful to watch, because there was a time in my life when I made decisions every bit as jaw-droppingly fucked up and incomprehensible to outside observers, decisions I look back on now and still want to shake my younger self by the shoulders and scream "WHAT THE FUCK IS WRONG WITH YOU??" And the end of S2 took me right back to that time in my life, when my head was so thoroughly messed up that I made terrible decisions that hurt myself and alienated the people around me, all while wanting nothing more in the world but to be a good person and do the right thing. And I imagine that when Aziraphale finally breaks out of his own indoctrination he is going to be horrified and devastated by a lot of what he did and said, not to mention the betrayal of how thoroughly he was manipulated and gaslit.
Yes, I am projecting hard onto Aziraphale. Yes, this is just my own theory about the final 15. But I don't see anything in the story that flat-out contradicts this reading of his character. And honestly, I care less about the veracity of my interpretation than I do about the fans saying things like "I can't take the final 15 at face value because it would make Aziraphale a terrible person," or "If he really believed that stuff he was saying, Crowley should make him beg and grovel for at least a century before taking him back" or even "if he really believed that stuff, he deserves to have Crowley never speak to him again."
Just...as a person who used to be heavily indoctrinated and has to live with the memory of who I was and what I believed back then for the rest of my life, it's incredibly distressing.

In Season 2, Aziraphale was Going Too Fast for Crowley
There's two primary reasons this is the case.
The first, is that in this season we saw Aziraphale reaching out to Crowley in ways he hadn't done before. We saw the increase in physical touch, we were told about the increased communication, the whole 'our car, our bookshop' thing and of course, the ball scene.
The second is Crowley's depression and the numerous hints we got this season that he wants to run away from it all.
I'm going to start with premise number two, because it makes me sad and I want it explored first, so the romanticism of Aziraphale can sooth that hurt.
There are multiple ways Crowley's depression is shown to us in this season. The first we see in the very first episode. As he's on the bench with Shax, he asks this:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Do you ever just think what's the point? ... Heaven, Hell, Demons, Angels. It's all... it's all, well, pointless."
This is the first indication we get that Crowley's depressed. He's struggling to care but also - and this will be a running theme - he wants to run away from it all. He doesn't want them to be his problem anymore. He doesn't see the point of them anymore.
But the biggest demonstration of his depression is his relationship with the Bentley this season.
He's literally living in his car. And we see no indication that he wants to it be any other way. It's insignificant to Aziraphale. They don't bring it up at all. It's not mentioned between them. Which means it's a status quo that's been established and set in stone.
When Aziraphale returns with the Bentley after his jaunt to Edinburgh, Crowley is literally waiting at the door to the bookshop with his plants, almost anxiously.
Tumblr media
He's ready to shove a box into Aziraphale's arms the moment he steps near the door. "There you are!" Crowley exclaims as he shoves a box of plants in Aziraphale's arms. And while Aziraphale is a bit shocked at being met so suddenly, he's not surprised Crowley is going back to the Bentley. He even helped.
But why? Yes, he loves the Bentley, it is his world, he's extraordinarily connected to it. But I also think it's more than that.
The Bentley is literally his get-away vehicle. He doesn't want to deal with Heaven, Hell and all that lot. But he's also depressed. He's lost his flat, most of his plants, he no longer has the structure of Hell to fall back on. He's listless. But through it all, he has the Bentley. If he wants to leave, if things get to be too much, he can leave in the Bentley. He's already wanted to do it in season one, when he offered to literally drive them to Alpha Centauri.
This makes the scene where Aziraphale refers to the bookshop and the Bentley as theirs hit a little bit harder. For Aziraphale, the bookshop is safety and it's staying put. It's consistency. For Crowley the Bentley is an escape, in a very literal manner.
Which brings us to Aziraphale.
This season Aziraphale was reaching out, the scene above with the 'our Bentley' being one of those moments. But other moments is the increased touching they're doing. There's a lack of distance between them there's never been before. Aziraphale is reaching out physically and emotionally (our Bentley scene), like in these moments:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But of course, then there's also the Jane Austen ball, that was "supposedly" for Maggie and Nina, but let's be real, it was as much for himself and Crowley as it was for them.
But before I get into that, lets look at a moment after Aziraphale first proposes the plan.
Muriel is poking around the Nina and Maggie thing, and Crowley says to them, "Don't hesitate to ask me if you have any other questions about love."
And Aziraphale goes on one of those lovely face journeys Michael Sheen is so very good at. He looks all at once, hopeful, nervous, tentative and like he's gearing up for something. He sucks in a breathe and then blows it out silently. There's a lovely little gif of the moment which you can find here. But here's a couple of screengrabs as well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
He does this little silent out take of air as if needing a moment to gather himself because Crowley was acting like a master of love and Aziraphale was planning on them dancing together and realising they were in love.
Oh, right lets get back to that.
Okay, so when they were spitballing ideas about how to get Maggie and Nina to fall in love, Aziraphale comes up with this:
"People would gather and do some formal dancing and then realise they had misunderstood each other and were actually deeply in love."
Coupled with the increased physical affection, the whole thing with the Bentley and then Aziraphale's actions during the 'ball', it's clear he's ramping up to 'something'. I'm still personally of the opinion that as angels and sex-less beings there won't be much of an element of 'sex' or even kissing to their relationship. But Aziraphale was leading up to 'ramping up' their relationship, giving it a new title, possibly even cohabitation, one day.
During the ball scene, when Crowley joins Aziraphale, Michael has another lovely little facial journey where you can see Aziraphale working up the courage to invite Crowley to dance.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
And then, when he does work up the courage to ask (or rather demand), he's absolutely giddy about it. (side not: that is also an amusing range of expressions for David there too)
Tumblr media Tumblr media
But he's not listening. Aziraphale is too wrapped up in his fantasy to see what's happening with Crowley in front of him. And it's not something Crowley is expecting from Aziraphale either. In that last image, the focus is on Crowley and he's confused, bemused. Not angry, though, even though he's being ignored or even worried, in that moment, about the looming demon threat. Merely confused about Aziraphale's reaction.
So, we've got Crowley's depression and his desire to run away from everything, we've got Aziraphale's attempts to bring them closer together working himself up to a confession and then we've also got the outside pressures.
Nina, assuming they're together. The tension of Gabriel there in Aziraphale's shop, the strengthening risk from Heaven and Hell, the demon attack on the bookshop, Armageddon 2.0 readying and then Crowley gets the final push.
Gabriel and Beelzebub are in love, and choosing each other over their respective sides and positions, coupled with Maggie's meddling.
Prior to Nina and Maggie coming into the bookshop, Crowley tidies the bookshop and he clearly is making plans for them to go off together for an "extremely alcoholic breakfast at the Ritz." Their celebration place, their 'us' place, but with the extremely alcoholic and public segment of it, not likely a breakfast for hearts to be laid out. Crowley's not planning that, he simply thinks they need to unwind for a moment before he lays out the whole 'Armageddon 2.0 bit.'
And then Maggie says this:
"Because you and Mr. Fell don't ever talk to each other. You never say what your really thinking. It was all we needed; It's what you two need as well."
And he's been given an answer. Armageddon 2.0 is coming, Gabriel and Beelzebub just ran away together, but maybe if he lays his cards on the table, this at least will be fine.
But he hasn't dealt with his depression, he hasn't worked through his 'need to run away' issues, he hasn't dealt with losing Aziraphale in the fire and then Aziraphale comes in with the Metatron's offer for him to return to Heaven. And suddenly every other road bar offering up his heart is closed. And so he does.
And it's a mess. It's impulsive, and unscripted and it's painful, raw and unorganised, he can hardly get the words out, it's all in a rush.
Because Crowley, at his heart, wasn't ready. He wanted the status quo to continue. Aziraphale is ready. He's been gearing up to it the whole season. He's ready to take the next step. But Crowley isn't. He wants to be, but he's pushing himself into it too soon. He has too many issues to work through before he can get to that. So much he needs to work through before he's ready to vulnerable and settled that way. But Aziraphale is still there, ready, going too fast for him.

I have a concept/idea for twst where you are Crowley.
Let me explain;
Okay so basically, I don't know if this has existed before but my idea is that you are Crowley. I'm making you 19 and the first years are NOT romantic interests(only the second and third years, Leona as well ig, are love interest) and as well as the supposed adults; Crewel and Sam!
Originally I wanted this to be leaning towards female because I thought it'll be funny but I changed it to any gender available really so male, non binary, etc are included. Btw, high heels. I want you to wear high heels. They're hot. I'm not ashamed. Short or tall, male or female, I do not care - if you wear heels you're amazing.
I can explain more if anyone is interested I don't know
Here are some scenes I made up;
[Name]: ACE DONOVAN TRAPPOLA! YOU ARE IN BIG TROUBLE!
Epel: Donovan? DONOVAN??
Ace, shivering rethinking what he has done: shut up, epel, she gave me that middle name by force and I have no control
— beep —
[Name]: Unbelievable! Leona, if you have nothing better to do than lounge around, it's best for you to not be here at all!
Leona smirking: Then where else should I be? Your bed?
[Name] stumbling in surprise: U-UNACCEPTABLE!
— beep —
Vil: It makes me wonder, dearest headmaster.. why aren't you in the modeling agency? You have the looks but of course not better than me
[Name]: Because for I am gracious, I rather let others outshine me for their spotlight!
Crewel, who knows why they don't do modeling: Gracious, my ass.
— beep —
Azul: Certainly headmaster, I can bring this school to new heights! All you have to do is sign this contract~
[Name] being held hostage by the twins: I-I will agree to your terms for I am gracious!
Floyd: Yayyy~ [insert marine animal] agreed to stay with us~
[Name]: I don't want this school anymore

Hi! Hope you're having a nice day! So, I love your metas, however, I confess the, idk tecnicalities? logistics? of a twist that they've been together the whole time still puzzle me. What would the narrative purpose of such a reveal be? Why and how would it be put into the story? I guess what I'm saying is I'd really, really like you to be correct but I'm sadly still skeptical that it could actually happen :(
Hi! Thanks for the ask. Hope you're having a nice day yourself. :) I'll give you a cheeky answer and then a real one, if you don't mind. @procrastiel also asked me to talk more about "no nightingales" and it fit into the second half of my answer here so this is kind of a combination ask response to both of you.
This gif below this paragraph here? Yeah, this is *not* the scene from 1.01 that, when decoded from their language, says they're having sex. I am not being sarcastic-- it is *not* this scene. This scene is in that meta (which is being edited, so, soon) because how could it not be, really, but *this scene* is *not* that scene lol and, yet, some people still find the idea of them sleeping together surprising:
Tumblr media
Anon, this is, like, the third, joint Crowley & Aziraphale scene in Episode 1.01 and that is consensual, mutually beneficial, kink. One that both has a sense of humor and puts a smile on your face, as Mrs. Sandwich would put it.
Let's thought experiment a bit here. Let's say this is the extent of it. It absolutely is not lol but, for the experiment, let's say it is. Let's say that they've never taken each other to bed, they've never lent each other a hand, so to speak, they've never anything else you're thinking of right now-- nothing. The most significant physical contact they will have ever had pre-2.06 in this thought experiment is holding hands on the bus on the way back from Tadfield which, as we all know, isn't a sexual thing. Anyone can hold hands and it was a long week, but let's say that's it. They would then *still* have a sexual element to their relationship and the show gave you that information in 1.01. What is happening in this scene is a form of sex. It's already in the show that they are having sex. Yeah, they're having more and different sex than this and yeah, there is evidence of it and yeah, meta finished soon, but honestly... there is actually *a lot* of suggestion of Crowley & Aziraphale sleeping together. For now, we'll just talk about this scene here...
Crowley liking to watch is such a thing that it's now a recurring joke on the show. You don't think that "can I watchhhhh" while he follows Aziraphale around the neighborhood in S2 wasn't Crowley self-deprecatingly poking fun at the fact that he's got a bit of a voyeuristic thing happening? "Can I slither over and watch you eat cake?" in Good Omens: Lockdown?... Anon. Girl.
Crowley isn't just scientifically intrigued by Aziraphale eating lunch. He's not just super happy that his pal is having a very delicious meal. He is very, very, very sexually into watching Aziraphale eat...which is to say that he's into watching Aziraphale allow himself to experience pleasure, in the face of the repression of the Heaven mentality... and Aziraphale isn't just indulging this in a one-sided way where, for whatever reason, he lets his best friend of 6,000 years get turned on watching him have lunch but they don't talk about it or something and Aziraphale lets it go because he's got no one else to talk to lol. Aziraphale is equally into this. It's easy to see why and the more the show tells you about Aziraphale, the easier it is.
Aziraphale, into Crowley watching him? Aziraphale, who painted every damn room in his house the color of Crowley's pretty, Va-Va-Voom Yellow eyes? Aziraphale, who has scene after scene after scene after scene of looking irritated and jealous at literally anything else Crowley is ever looking at and calls beautiful? lol That angel is into the undivided attention of the Serpent of Eden, ok?
Crowley made the stars in the sky. He's a creator and an innovator and an engineer and an artist. He's been on Earth since the start and has seen basically everything beautiful humanity has ever made. He drives one of the finest examples of human ingenuity-- his beautiful Bentley. He's seen The Pyramids and watched Da Vinci paint The Mona Lisa and saw first-run Shakespeare performed at The Globe. He has an eye for art and beauty... and he's the original temptress. It was Crowley who tempted Eve into eating the apple and when Eve ate that apple and discovered the pleasures of food, she and Adam created that whole Biblical fruits of knowledge metaphor by getting up to some other forms of pleasure soon after, so, Crowley is basically responsible for free thought and pleasure throughout all of human history since the Garden of Eden... and what drives him out of his mind with want is Aziraphale enjoying himself.
I mean, enjoying his food. Totally just his food. Only his food, Anon. *slight smirk*
Aziraphale is absolutely into that. Crowley likes to watch and Aziraphale likes being watched in that way. Crowley looking at him like he's more beautiful than nebulae and statues of Gabriel is attention that is absolutely welcome by Aziraphale. Two of his favorite things at once-- a luxurious, scrumptious lunch and a turned on Crowley. Aziraphale's ideal day lol. That angel is watching Crowley watch him and loving every minute of it. It's as delicious as his actual lunch. Look at that little glance over at him. C'mon lol.
Tumblr media
They do this from time to time. What do you think the results are? What would happen if you kinky-lunched with your best friend and how low are the odds that this is the only sexual thing the two of you have managed to get up to in the 6,000 years you've been on Earth? When one of you is a raging hedonist and the other likes to take beautiful things apart to see how they work?
This scene and its character knowledge is dropped into the middle of the first episode of the show with zero context and 10/10 no notes that was the single most hilarious way this extremely funny show could have ever chosen to do this but this is something the show chose to not only tell us about but to then provide context for in 2.02.
They gave kinky lunch an origin story, Anon lol. They were like also, you should probably know about Bildad at the ox rib special... you see, that hot lunch from 2008 actually started in *2,500 B.C.* when Crowley offered Aziraphale some barbecue and Aziraphale, who had never eaten before, ate an entire ox while Crowley lounged in the corner with a jug of wine and fantasized about being Aziraphale's dinner and before you yell at me, Anon, for sexualizing barbecue when really, sometimes, one just loves a good cookout, I agree with you.
Enjoying food does not have to be a sexual experience. I mean, I've had some pasta that could have given me an orgasm but... what makes ox rib cellar night sexual isn't how much Aziraphale is like omg food is delicious, I eat now, maybe forever, this is amazing. It's how he *looks an aroused Crowley dead in the eye while fully aware of how into watching him Crowley is and then goes back to enjoying his barbecue.*
Tumblr media
The next day, he's cracking Crowley up by using the ox ribs in their whole plot to save the kids by having that be what Sitis pulls out of Job's ribs. Gabriel and the angels think sex is rib removal so Crowley and Aziraphale are jointly, from across a room, like the previous night coordinating a kind of pseudo-sex to fool the angels and Aziraphale puts the ox ribs into the pseudo-sex, joking with Crowley about their own sex-that's-not-exactly-traditional-sex-but-was-way-more-sex-than-this from the night before. He winks at Crowley and gives him two thumbs up when he sets up the ox rib bit of it and Bildad was like do not laugh in front of the angels do not laugh in front of the angels...
It was absolutely an intentional joke on Aziraphale's part, poking light fun at their night of figuring out that they have a pair of wildly compatible, mutually arousing kinks that can bring them some fun and showing they have a sense of humor about themselves-- something that is on display a lot, actually.
Tumblr media
They're very aware of this and very funny about it and it has been going on since 2,500 B.C., Anon. S2 was just like Bildad at the ox rib special was the first time they had a form of sex, fyi, so yeah, that's why I would not be surprised if S3 has some flashback where they're semi-dressed in Aziraphale's bedroom or something and the implication is that they also have sex that doesn't involve food. The show is also already saying that they do and other scenes already suggest it but we'll save that for the main meta on this topic.
Ok, so my less cheeky, more technical answer :)
To be clear about what I'm saying here so we're on the same page about what S3 could potentially maybe bring... I'm not saying that there's a 25 minute long minisode that's nothing but them getting busy. It would likely be a bit more subtle than that. I say that and then also they did drop food kink into 1.01 and had that hilarious Newt & Anathema scene in S1 so who knows lol but basically, I think there's a flashback in S3 somewhere that is a little more direct about the fact that they've been sleeping together and for a long time. It doesn't need to be anything wild. It doesn't even need to be anything but suggestive of it. A friend of mine thinks it's my The Blitz, Part 3 theory but that they're in bed when Greta gets into the bookshop. All I know is that it's suspicious to me that the only room in the bookshop they haven't really shown us so far is Aziraphale's bedroom. Probably because there's at least some subtle evidence of Crowley in it and they're dragging that out a bit. The one thing I do think though for sure is that we get the vavoom-y first kiss and it being a bonkers amount of time ago, to re-contextualize basically all of their scenes that come after it, which will wind up being most scenes. I don't presume to be correct about details about stuff we haven't seen as I would not dream that I could predict the how, just maybe that I've got the overall vibes right at this point. I won't place any bets about how they'd work in a more direct implication of sex. I might on The Vavoom, though. I've got a solid feeling about that.
For the record, I wouldn't really consider them in bed a twist (as you might have gotten from the tone of this meta lol) but I can see how some people would. If your skepticism is coming at all, even in part, from a place of something like this just not frequently done on tv, I'd say, well, you might have also thought they weren't going to kiss, either, and *gestures in the general direction of Every and doesn't gif it because we've all been through enough* lol. The show is very, very queer-friendly and has a showrunner and actors who seem game enough so none of that is really an impediment to this.
Good Omens is telling its story out of chronological order, for the most part, for what amount to two main reasons: because it lends additional meaning to its themes and because it's fun as hell. The narrative purpose of adding additional context to Crowley & Aziraphale's relationship is to add to your understanding of it because your understanding of it is one of the main ways the show is conveying a lot of its themes. They are the story so adding context to the story to drive meaning is never is not without narrative purpose. By telling the story out of sequence, you wind up engaging your audience to focus more on what you're saying in every scene because you've taught them to look for the layers you're building.
Good Omens told you "no nightingales"-- had Crowley use nightingales and confirm that it's a word in his and Aziraphale's language-- in the same scene in which they showed you them kissing for the first time (and, for them, the worst time lol) to help bury the lede that this other scene earlier in the season is actually telling you about their first kiss. (By setting this up, they now have to show you it, suggesting it's in S3.) The other scene is obviously Crowley taking advantage of the fact that Aziraphale just asked him to play Cupid (and called Crowley romantic in doing so, btw-- "I don't think she [Maggie] knows how to conduct a courtship" implying that Aziraphale feels that Crowley does and that's why Aziraphale has run to his very romantic partner for help). Aziraphale is asking him to help the shop lesbians fall in love and Crowley uses the moment to demonstrate that romantic side by describing back to Aziraphale their first kiss as, to him, the epitome of romance:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Good Omens intentionally shows you stuff and then gives you more context that helps you understand it later. It spent two seasons getting you to know more about nightingales than Sir David Attenborough for the express purpose of eventually answering your question in 2.06. The question: do all these references to these romantic birds really mean that Crowley & Aziraphale are aware of them and the nightingales mean something to them or are the nightingales just a metaphor for them?
And even if a part of you was still going awfully interesting choice of metaphor since this is all romantic as all hell the whole time, you're still not sure until 2.06 if it's symbolism and metaphor and if the show is ever going to weave it totally into Crowley & Aziraphale directly, even if a few clues seem to suggest that they have been doing so all along. Like that "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" is playing on the piano at The Ritz in S1 (implying one of them either asked or magically influenced the pianist to play it, implying that it's their song/a song with meaning to them/their parallel to Ineffable Bureaucracy's "Everyday", as we'd say after S2.) Most significantly, that Aziraphale in 1967 seems to be referencing it in a coded way when he tells Crowley that maybe, one day, in the future, they could dine at the Ritz, in a scene that's almost impossible to read as anything but a discussion about their relationship.
Cut to 2.06 when Crowley busts this out:
Tumblr media
The show is now like remember when we taught you that nightingales are symbolic of romance? Well, we had to so that you'd understand that here is nightingales being used by Crowley as the shorthand word in their language for their romance. We taught you that dining at the Ritz is the act of trying to live live a little more openly with that romance, as well as meaning to literally dine at the Ritz, and that it's a reference to the lyric in "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square." Here's Crowley talking about it. Here's him using the word nightingales in a coded way and Aziraphale understanding him. Here's confirmation of this word existing between them as the word they use when talking about this romance of theirs long before this scene in 2.06 takes place. Here's confirmation that they are in a romantic relationship with one another. Crowley using "nightingales" and Aziraphale understanding him means that it means their romantic relationship in their language... which means they have a word for their romantic relationship in their language... which is to say that they have a romantic relationship.
People do have romantic relationships without having kissed one another before or without having sex but do beings who kinky lunch? Probably not. No nightingales recontextualizes the kiss in its same scene for us the way that Crowley lifting the magic for a moment as he walked away in Job's courtyard recontextualized what had happened earlier in that scene for Aziraphale. When Crowley got Aziraphale to see the crows were the key, Aziraphale understood what had just happened in the scene. When, in 2.06, Crowley says no nightingales, it's for us, this time. Not Aziraphale. He already knows how to speak their language. Even if it's the first time *you've* seen them kiss, no nightingales exists to show you that it's not the first time they ever have.
You don't have a word in a secret language unless you need it. You don't talk about a romantic relationship with one another that you don't have. Crowley pointing to Heaven the way he did when he had Muriel arrest him and saying no nightingales is Crowley saying their romantic relationship, at that moment, felt incompatible with Aziraphale going to Heaven. Heaven means no nightingales-- no romance. He doesn't know how they can continue *the romantic relationship that they already have* if Aziraphale is leaving.
2.06 is not their first kiss; it is probably the worst kiss they've ever had and they've had thousands. It was desperation in the failure of surface communication and double speak alike both seeming to fail them in the moment. Aziraphale touches his mouth with a shaking hand after Crowley leaves and thinks about how he wants him to come back and do it again because imagine loving your soulmate for six millennia and it's going to end with that kiss. This is not a show that's going to permanently break your heart here. Everyone basically already knows how it ends and it's sweet. It's called Good Omens. You really think a show like this is going to make these two adorable supernatural dorks that are its protagonists have had a depressing first kiss? Especially when they're already hinting at how they're going to reveal in S3 that it was really the complete opposite of one? And that it was a really, really long time ago...
If you look back on the nightingales references prior to this, right, you realize that this word has existed in their vocabulary for a long time. "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" was playing on the piano at the end of S1 so nightingales was already in their vocabulary then. They were already involved romantically in S1. The scene as they agree to go to lunch ahead of the end of S1 has Aziraphale saying that they should go to The Ritz and when we get in there and see them at lunch, we realize we've already been here with them in the first episode and that the show chose to only tell us in the season 1 finale. They tell you things and then add in context to give them additional layers of meaning later.
They dined at The Ritz in 2008 for the first time in 1.01, doing what Aziraphale had suggested in 1.03, so there are nightingales in the beginning, middle and end of S1 pretty directly. Aziraphale having suggested this in 1967 means that nightingales already meant romance to them then. It's *why* Aziraphale uses dining at the Ritz to describe having that more open romance as something he would like-- literally and metaphorically. It comes from the song, which was first performed in 1940. It suggests that the references to this song for them probably tie to The Blitz in 1941, which we almost certainly have a Part 3 to coming in S3. It would be a safe bet "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" is in it somewhere. Whatever happens then will also wind up re-contextualizing the "no nightingales" moment and adding additional meaning to it that we don't yet know but we know enough already to understand that nightingales = romance.
But when Crowley says no nightingales in 2.06, he frames it by asking Aziraphale to stop and listen, in a reference to the formation of their secret language in the Job courtyard. In a reference to those other birds-- crows-- that hid the goats and formed the basis of Crowley's name. Nightingales and dining at the Ritz might have existed for them since WW2 as words but there were other words that pre-date it and by framing the nightingales comment in such a way as to also reference Job, it's a reminder of how their romance isn't new. It's thousands of years old. The crows were nightingales, long before they ever admitted it, let alone got a song.
World's hottest, most romantic buddy comedy, I tell ya...

The thing is, Crowley and the Metatron obviously have history.
It’s not just Crowley recognising him in the shop, but the Metatron correctly predicting that he would. How do they know each other?
That scene could have been written differently, if it weren’t important that Crowley knew him. Aziraphale or Uriel could have been the one to recognise him, stopping Michael in her tracks as she boasted about being the Supreme Archangel. But instead, no other angel in the room recognised him. Metatron seems a bit surprised by this, so turns to Crowley, quite certain that this particular demon, cast out of heaven 6,000 years ago, would remember him when the Archangels did not.
M: For Heaven's sake. And I mean that most literally. You don't know me? [pause] Well, uh, what about you, Demon? Do you know me?  C: Oh, I know you. Last time I saw you, you were a big, floating giant head, man.
Tumblr media
And it’s not just that Crowley immediately recognised him, without hesitation (or sitting up in that chair!), but that the Metatron knows who Crowley is too. As he comments to Aziraphale, he remembers the angel that Crowley once was, and what he was like when he was in Heaven:
M: Ah, well, always did want to go his own way. Always asking damn fool questions, too.
What does this mean? What's the shared history? Crowley must have had some sustained contact with him when he was an angel, to recognise him when others didn’t and to be remembered so well in turn. Perhaps they worked together, if Crowley was as senior an angel as I believe we’re being led to suspect.
How many angels have direct contact with the Metatron? It doesn’t seem like many. Aziraphale only managed to reach him when he was trying to talk to God. He’s not typically in the meetings with the Archangels either - they were discussing Armageddon: The Sequel™ without him there. It was only when it came to demoting Gabriel, the Supreme Archangel, that they needed a more senior presence there to authorise it. Neil confirms he’s top of Heaven’s organisational chart, the most important angel in Heaven. Muriel is delighted and flattered to even be noticed by him. And they're all a bit afraid of him when they realise who he is.
But Crowley isn’t the least bit bothered by him. Sure, he’s a demon now, and beyond all that, but he doesn’t even bat an eyelid. Doesn't so much as flinch when the Metatron gives him this very dark look, (and ominous music swells):
Tumblr media
Something happened there! That look is more than disdain for a fallen angel. What happened when Crowley was cast out from Heaven, and how was the Metatron involved?
I need Season 3…for so many reasons, but I need answers to all of this…

In preparation for the upcoming release of the second book: a compilation of all translations by this account of Twisted Wonderland: the first novel!
(These do not encompass the entire book, only the parts that vary from the original game)
What Yuuya Remembers Crowley catches up to Yuuya, who has recently woken up inside of a coffin and been chased through an unknown building by a monster demanding his clothes. Crowley explains that Yuuya--just like everyone in the school--is the egg of a magic user. Yuuya tries to remember what happened.
Yuuya, Alone After escorting Yuuya to Ramshackle, Crowley leaves to visit the library. Left alone for the first time since waking up in a coffin, Yuuya is finally confronted with the reality of his situation.
Yuuya Dreams After awaking in a coffin, battling ghosts, making peace with Grim and being hired as janitorial staff, main protagonist Kuroki Yuuya spends his first night in Ramshackle Dorm--and has a dream.
Ghost Escort After spending his first night in Ramshackle with Grim, Yuuya wakes up to a surprise: the ghosts that he thought they had exterminated the night before are back, and they're friendly. Yuuya reflects on the Great Seven statues.
Meeting Ace Yuuya's first interaction with Ace is not pleasant.
Yuuya's Confession After their violent first meeting with Ace, Grim plots his revenge while the ghosts cheer him on him, forcing Yuuya to reveal something that he has been trying to avoid all day. And it leads to a revelation.
Naming Ramshackle and Culture Shock Some NRC information from the novel and emphasis on how foreign everything is to the protagonist through comparisons to how very different school systems overseas (and in other dimensions?) are when compared to those in Japan. Yuuya has at least twice the culture shock in any given situation.
Cafeteria Panic Much like the game, after Ace tries to ditch his window-washing duties it is Grim's turn to run away. Ace and Deuce are quick to turn to violence in order to capture him, which Yuuya can neither condone nor stop.
Ace Almost Apologizes Assigned by Crowley to retrieve a magestone from the mines to compensate for the damage done to the cafeteria chandelier, Ace realizes that the stakes are far higher for Yuuya than he'd thought, and almost manages to apologize.
Getting Them to Listen Ace, Deuce, Yuuya and Grim successfully find a magestone only to be chased away by a monster telling them to get out and that the stone is theirs. The situation immediately devolves into finger-pointing and arguments, which Yuuya tries his best to manage. (This scene seems significant to the "beast master" role of the Prefect that is only rarely touched upon in the game.)
Yuuya's First Class After retrieving the magestone, being assigned the role of "beastmaster" by Crowley and being permitted to attend school as one-half a student (with Grim), Yuuya shows up to his very first class at Night Raven College, and it is just as awkward as the high school he left back home.
Yuuya and Deuce Yuuya has been stared all morning by the other students, throughout disastrous potions lessons where he couldn't understand what was going on. It is finally time for lunch, but he has lost his appetite. Cue, Deuce.
Yuuya at Night A quick blurb for anyone wondering how the novel approached the sleeping situation in Ramshackle: Following an afternoon of PE with Vargas while everyone else had flying lessons, Yuuya is home after his first day at school.
Ace Apologizes After a difficult first day of school Yuuya is awoken by Ace, who is asking to spend the night after stealing a tart at Heartslabyul. Important note: just moments earlier Yuuya tells Ace that if he apologizes from the heart, Riddle will forgive him for stealing.
Yuuya and Ace Lunchtime at his second day at school is shaping up to be just as terrible as the first, when Deuce had to step in to keep Yuuya from breaking down entirely under the whispers and stares of the other Night Raven College students. Now it is his second day of school and it is happening again, but worse. Cue, Ace.
Meeting Leona Leona's introduction was entirely retconned in the novel: when Deuce and Yuuya are on their way back to Heartslabyul from the school store with eggs for the chestnut tart they are interrupted by a group of Savanaclaw bullies, and Leona steps in.
Ace Asks for Help After a sleepover where Ace, Deuce and Grim dub Yuuya the "prefect" of Ramshackle Dorm, Deuce and Ace are already awake. Ace is hoping for Yuuya's support with apologizing to Riddle, but has difficulty asking for it.
Yuuya Fails Ace has presented a chestnut tart to Riddle to ask forgiveness for what he stole, only for Riddle to reveal an unknown rule about chestnut tarts and unbirthday parties, and order it thrown out. Ace tries to stand up against Riddle and looks to his dormmates for support, but receives none. Not even from Yuuya.
Yuuya's Guilt Yuuya is wracked with guilt after failing to join Ace against Riddle, and now both Deuce and Grim have been collared as well. Ace himself is less than pleased, and Yuuya can't help but think that everything is all his fault.
Yuuya Apologizes Yuuya fails to defend Ace to Riddle during the unbirthday party's chestnut tart incident, and the guilt is eating him alive. After speaking with Chenya, the four first-year students go to Trey for answers, but Trey has nothing to say in his own defense.
Ramshackle Sleepover It is the night before the duel between Ace, Deuce and Riddle, and no one is able to fall asleep. The three begin discussing the events of the day, and the topic turns to the mysterious Malleus Draconia.
Duel for Housewarden The unstable situation at Heartslabyul has led to this, a duel between Ace, Deuce and Riddle. Cater makes one, final bid to stop it, while Yuuya finds himself more involved than he'd anticipated.
Riddle Gloats Ace and Deuce’s duel against Riddle was over almost as soon as it began, but Riddle isn’t through with them yet.
Deuce vs Riddle Deuce makes a final effort to stand up against Riddle, and Yuuya can only take so much.
Yuuya vs Riddle Someone is finally standing up to Riddle and, against all expectations, it’s Yuuya.
Ace vs Riddle Riddle shifts from insulting Yuuya's home to mocking Ace and Deuce's parents. It does not go well.
The Egg Scene Riddle throws a temper tantrum in the gardens, and the students of Heartslabyul have finally had enough.
Riddle, Breaking Down After being so mistreated for so long the students of Heartslabyul have finally had enough. Deuce is not impressed.
Riddle Attacks Riddle delights in terrorizing the students who have turned on him and Ace alone stands his ground.
Trey Protects As Riddle tries to murder Ace, Trey steps up.
Riddle on the Edge Teetering on the brink of overblot, Riddle tries to come to terms with the thought that he was made to suffer for nothing.
The Transformation Riddle transforms.
Birth of a Monster The Overblot
Crowley's Magic Riddle has been taken over, and Crowley steps up.
Something to Tell Him Cater and Trey are convinced to join Ace, Deuce, Yuuya and Grim in standing to fight.
The Struggle Crowley has left to evacuate the students, Ace has no plan, and Riddle is fading fast.
The Overblot Battle Trey saves Cater, but he cannot reach Riddle
Meeting Trey Having collapsed during the overblot battle, Riddle dreams of his childhood and meeting Trey and Chenya for the first time.
Riddle Awakens In the aftermath of the battle, Trey becomes desperate.
Visiting Ramshackle Long after the fight, Ace and Deuce visit Yuuya and they discuss how things have changed.
Stubborn Ace calls Yuuya stubborn, completely catching him off guard.
The Unbirthday Party Yuuya and Grim attend Heartslabyul's Unbirthday Party, and Riddle surprises them all.

Ever since I saw this incredible post I've been thinking a lot more about the book vs show differences, and one of the things my brain keeps returning to is the very different presentation of Heaven and Hell.
In the book, I feel like the majority of the time Heaven and Hell are mentioned, it's simply in reference to them being adversaries. They're often just referred to in the context of being Aziraphale and Crowley's bosses, both equally uninterested in humanity or the details of their employees' actions. Hence, we really do see them as not being so different from each other, and dislike them both equally. Personally, I feel this is a bit different in the show.
In the show we actually get to see Heaven and Hell. We get to see Beelzebub for more than a couple of lines, we get to meet Gabriel, and we get to feel the atmosphere of Heaven and Hell as settings.
In terms of their general vibe, the difference feels pretty stark. Heaven is empty, cold, unfeeling; every interaction between the angels we see is laced with mistrust and two-faced scheming. Hell, on the other hand, does have emotion; it's a deeply unpleasant space, of course, but the way the demons complain to each other feels more honest. Take Uriel and Michael: we've seen them throughout both seasons, yet I can't recall either of them expressing a single honest feeling. Shax and Furfur, on the other hand, have had a lot of honest moments both with each other and with other characters. In a bizarre way, Hell becomes more relatable, more likeable, in the show.
Of course, there are massive issues with Hell, but they don't necessarily come across at first glance. The really dark aspects are almost always played off with jokes, to the extent that we don't talk about them that much. Beelzebub is pretty well liked from what I can tell, despite evidently having extensively tortured their employees - but it's part of a funny scene so we instinctively overlook it. Gabriel, on the other hand, seems widely loathed; he's just blatantly a dick in Season 1, and we don't see enough of him actually as himself in Season 2 to balance that out. I'm sure that's also in part due to fake-Aziraphale's trial being resurfaced in Season 2 as a serious, traumatic event for Crowley. We aren't shown the impact that Hell's treatment of Crowley had on Aziraphale, so once again Heaven ends up seeming like the more 'evil' side.
So I suppose it's no surprise that we end up having more discussions surrounding dismantling Heaven in Season 3, with Hell's toxicity being a slightly lesser topic of conversation. It does instinctively feel a little like Heaven is the 'bad one' in comparison, whereas we have to actively analyse those throwaway/comedic moments to acknowledge the massive issues with Hell. Therefore, to me, that neutral/equal presentation of the two 'bosses' in the book is no longer the case in the show.
Perhaps this is all because the show is shifting more towards commentary surrounding religious institutions as opposed to the Cold War energy of the book. Or perhaps we'll be explicitly shown more of Hell's dark side in Season 2 and will return to truly seeing them as equally bad. Or maybe you have a totally different interpretation (please let me know 👉👈). I don't know man, I just needed to get this thought out honestly lol.

I’ve been obsessing about Crowley not taking his glasses off for that 1941 memory for ages 😂 thank you for articulating that so clearly. It’s so painful slowly realising some of the differences between how they’ve experienced all the flashbacks. I dread (a little) to think what happened next in 1941 especially with how they next meet in 1967 and are very fragile. Maybe one of the few times they are on a similar, painful, page?
It's one of those things that just kinda built in the back of my brain every time I looked at that scene until it just. turned into a full puzzle.
The thing is that what we have seen so far does not explain the way they behave in 1967 and it's honestly driving me insane when I think about it too much. Because they're not on the same page in 1967!
When Aziraphale says no to a lift and then tells Crowley to not look disappointed—yeah, there's disappointment, but he is mainly surprised. He expected Aziraphale to say yes to a drive.
Maybe Crowley is the one who pulled the breaks in '41 and thinks that Aziraphale still wants him to initiate something, so when he immediately puts up walls instead he doesn't understand why.
OR actually, after another rewatch (or five) of that scene, let's say Aziraphale rejected Crowley in '41 since Crowley seems somewhat cold-ish right up until the holy water shows up. Then he does a complete 180 and is suddenly very soft, he keeps looking at Aziraphale (who is now looking AWAY after keeping his eyes on him before that), and seeing the holy water as a peace offering, offers a lift in return.
To Crowley, the holy water is an apology, an I'm sorry I rejected you (or whatever went down), so he thinks it is also Aziraphale saying he's ready now—and then he makes it very clear that he still isn't. Bringing up the Ritz with "perhaps" and "someday", and so Crowley tries to compromise.
"Anywhere you wanna go" is please, just give me something here, angel, and when Aziraphale looks at him NOW, he KEEPS looking at him, and his eyes flit between Crowley's glasses and his lips. Aziraphale looks and he hesitates, and then rejects him again.
"You go too fast for me Crowley" is so fucking painful, and there's so much in that one sentence, but it is also quite literal in regards to time. Aziraphale is literally 105 years behind because that's when Crowley asked for holy water and said no—he's giving him the water in 1967 when it should have been in 1862.
They have somehow once again ended up living on parallel but displaced planes of existence.
Sorry, this ended up being way longer than intended because you magically compelled me to go look at the 1967 clip and it all spiraled from there jshdkad
In conclusion, Neil i NEED to know what happened.

Baggy Uniform (Vil)
Inspired by this
Tumblr media
NOTE: I only write for female reader but everyone is welcome to read it!
— ( ಠ_ಠ)
"I'd love to, really I would," the Ramshackle Housewarden answers dryly, and Vil holds back a scoff. "But I have no money for that and this is good enough"
"Doesn't Headmaster Crowley pay for your expenses?"
"He made me live in an abandoned mansion, what do you think? Last time I took some money for food, he used that to blackmail me into doing his work. I stopped asking him long ago. Sadly, I just happen to have no magic, so the job options aren't as well paying, and I do have to also feed a cat monster and fix Ramshackle before it collapses on my head. So no, I don't have money for a good uniform. Can I help you with something else, Housewarden Schoenheit?"
Vil blinks twice, actually surprised at the rant. (Y/N) clearly needed to get all that out, and while cold, her words held to bite. In fact, she sounds just tired. Looking her over once again, Vil can see it more clearly: the disheveled hair, the pimples threatening to appear due to lack of care, the dark bags under her eyes, the hunch of her shoulders, the chipped nails... Her baggy uniform is the last of her worries when she's spending her free time laying down on a random staircase looking like an alcoholic going through withdrawal.
"... Get up, I'm not leaving you like this."
"Why do you care?"
Why does he care? It's not like Vil is a particularly altruistic person. Sure, he tries to be gracious, in his own way, most of the time, but otherwise he mostly keeps to himself until something bothers him. Does she bother him? Yes. But no. It's complicated.
Vil hates that he loves looking at her. She is bothersome because he can't stop thinking about her. She is bothersome because Vil feels the urge to go out of his way to be bothered by her.
"I'm not allowing the only girl in this school to be mistreated like that. We're going to get you a spa day, then some fitting clothes. Once that's done, we'll do something about the Headmaster."
"Pass. Pepel—that's Epel, by the way—warned me about you, and I'm really not feeling like being scrutinized today. Thanks, though"
"I'm– I will not– Seven, you're so bothersome. Do you know why?"
"Because I'm ugly?"
"Because you look like crap, and I still think you're breathtaking, and I hate it."
He watches as his words work their magic, her eyes widening to the size of saucers, her mouth falling open. She looks like a potato carved into a messy raccoon, and she's still gorgeous and Vil hates it, so much so that he wants to kiss her. So he keeps on talking.
"You look like a potato that has been out in the sun for three summer days, and I still want to kiss you. You walk like a raccoon goblin, and I still want to hug you. You act like a fifty years old alcoholic smoker, and I think it's so charming. And I hate it, I hate it all. If you allow me to be terribly cliche, I hate that I love you so much."
Tears rush so her pretty pretty eyes, and she tries to hide, but he catches her wrists before she can. The blush on her cheeks is absolutely captivating, and he wants to bite them like he'd bite a ripe apple.
"And I hate even more to see you be mistreated and go through so much misfortune. So, please, come with me. Allow me to help you bloom—no, to help your appearance reflect the beauty you already are inside."
"... Rook is going to love this whole scene," she grumbles, but allows Vil to pull her up, resting her forehead on his chest once they're both face to face. "Fine, pamper me, Your Beautifulness"
"This is not pampering, it's basic decency"
"Then basic decency me, Your Beautifulness~"
Seven, why her out of all the potatoes? He loves this girl so much.
