The New Wave of Traditional Heavy Metal offered no pretense of originality or evolution, and Ancient Empire was perfectly content to join their counterparts in imitating the sounds and gestures of old. So “Fight Another Day” sounded like mid-tier ‘80s metal and that was exactly the point. Presumably the long running time was meant to signal that this was some kind of epic, but there wasn’t really much in the way of bombast or grandeur: sure, there was an intro of sorts, but mostly it just rocked, chugged and shredded as one would expect. To be sure, “Fight Another Day” was enjoyable as a fundamentally heavy metal semi-anthem with hooks and momentum, and was very easy to appreciate on its terms. It was just that those terms also rendered it more or less completely unnecessary.
