Williamsburg Bridge, 1903 The Williamsburg Bridge was the second bridge to span the East River following the Brooklyn Bridge almost two decades earlier and took half the time to build. By the time the bridge opened the independent city of Brooklyn had been consolidated into New York City. Compared to the neo-gothic towers of the #BrooklynBridge the public hated the steel towers of the Williamsburg Bridge when it opened. The 333-foot towers were originally designed to have a 140-foot tall spire atop each but were never constructed. The Bridge also featured a trolley terminal under #DelanceyStreet where streetcars going over the bridge would turn around. Streetcar service on the bridge was discontinued in 1948 and the terminal was shut down and lays abandoned to this day. The underground space was selected for the proposed #Lowline underground park, which features technology to reflect sunlight underground to grow plants. #williamsburg #brookyln #southwilliamsburg #nyc #dumbo #fortgreene #williamsburgbridge #manhattan #skyline #nychisory #nyhistory #urbanism #delanceystreet #brooklynbridge #manhattanbridge #nycphoto #eastriver #skyscraper #brooklynhistory #brooklynheights #nycurbanism (at Williamsburg Bridge) https://www.instagram.com/p/CgxJYYguUL3/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

40 east 68th street, the john d crimmins house • upper east side, manhattan [excerpt below pulled from Tom Miller’s “Daytonian in Manhattan” blog. you should google the full thing because he details the entirety of this building’s fascinating history] “[John D Crimmins] commissioned German-born architect William Schickel to design a more fashionable brownstone house on the site of Pettit’s home. In the meantime, George and Nathaniel Williams were erecting a similar residence next door at No. 42. Crimmins and his wife filled the house with a collection of prints, books, historical documents--and children. The couple shared the house with their ten sons and daughters. Devoutly Catholic, Crimmins was a prominent parishioner of St. Patrick’s Cathedral and donated altars, sculptures and paintings to the church. He involved his family in his charitable works and every Christmas Day the entire family would don white aprons and serve dinner to the indigent, elderly women at the Little Sisters of the Poor on East 70th Street.” #ethanbarberco #nyhistory #oldnewyork #architecturephotography #newyorkcityphotography (at Upper East Side) https://www.instagram.com/p/CoQJAC-PASu/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

On This Day in New York City History March 16, 1827: The Freedom Journal which was fhe first African American-owned and operated newspaper in the United States was founded by John Brown Russwurm and Samuel Eli Cornish. The newspaper covered such issues as education, health, jobs and social events for free blacks not only in NYC but throughout the Northeast. After a falling out between co-founders, the focus for the newspaper would center on the movement for the return of Blacks to Africa in the form of the new colony of Liberia. This practice established by the American Colonial Society started in 1820. Liberia would become the first African colony to become an independent nation in 1847. The paper would cease publication in 1829. #FreedomJournal #AfricanAmericanHistory #AfricanAmericanStudies #BlackHistory #BlackStudies #BlackHistoryMatters #JohnBrowbRusswurm #SamuelEliCornish #NewspaperHistory #NewYorkHistory #NYHistory #NYCHistory #History #Historia #Histoire #Geschichte #HistorySisco https://www.instagram.com/p/Cp2dFnHur0k/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Good afternoon, everyone - we would like to offer a Very Happy 90th Birthday to one of America's most iconic locations - Radio City Music Hall. Tuesday, December 27th, 1932, the curtain goes up for the very first time at 1260 6th Avenue (Avenue Of The Americas). These images were taken between late November through December 26th, 1932 - she is seen here as quiet as a tomb, untouched and ready for the big step off - not unlike a grand ship just before her launching. In some of the photos, you'll see workmen putting on the finishing touches or a stray piece of equipment ready to be picked up and removed. The final image was taken on opening night - today - 9 decades ago. I wanted to share these in contrast to the flurry of activity that RCMH is still known for to this day. Ironically, Radio City had a catastrophic opening night - the live performance program ran from 8pm to 2am, and acts had to be crammed and many patrons simply up and left. It was a public relations nightmare. A month later, after restructuring and a few sackings, things turned around. Moving pictures were added to the rotation and the epic, ground-breaking "King Kong" was to premiere there in March, 1933. Ever since, Radio City has become the benchmark location for movie premieres, and some of the most popular music and theatrical performances of all time. And the rest, as they say, is history. 🇺🇲🇺🇲 ** Please Like & Follow "Sandy Hook History" on Facebook & Instagram for more amazing maritime and military histories of the Garden State and New York Harbor as well as a review of the 80th Anniversary of the Battle Of The Atlantic and World War 2** 🇺🇲🇺🇲 Photos: Getty Images (all) #visitmonmouth #newjerseybuzz #thejournalnj #locallivingnj #journeythroughjersey #onlyinnewjersey #njspots #centraljerseyexists #discovernj #yesnj #newjerseyhistory #newjerseyforyou #sandyhookbeach #sandyhooknj #sandyhookhistory #forthancockhistory #forthancock #radiocitymusichall #rockefellercenternyc #rockefellercenter #newyorkcityhistory #nyhistory #nyhistoricalsociety #therockettes #performancearts #newyorkcitylandmarks #nationalregisterofhistoricplaces #1930movies #radiocity #avenueoftheamericas (at Radio City Music Hall) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cmrl0H_gshQ/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

This is truly an amazing photo: The Long Island Motor Parkway (AKA Vanderbilt Parkway) in 1908 with the Manhattan skyline in the background. Built in 1908 and running from Queens to Ronkonkoma, Long Island, historians have called it the first road in the country built specifically for automobiles. The privately built toll road featured overpasses and bridges with a toll of $2 when it opened – limiting the roadway for wealthy men wishing to race their new cars. The parkway was closed and absorbed by the state in 1938. Part of the trail still exists as a bike trail in Queens. #longislandhistory #brooklyn #longislandmotorparkway #longisland #brooklyn #robertmoses #vanderbiltparkway #longislandexpressway #lie #bqe #brooklynqueensexpressway #nyhistory #hychistory #urbanism #urbanplanning #thepowerbroker #architecture #urbandesign #cityplaning #urbanplanning #vanderbiltmansion #ronkonkoma (at Queens, New York) https://www.instagram.com/p/CfrN-ZKOFWz/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

did you know? 653 fifth avenue, also known as the cartier building, was originally built as a private mansion. The residence was built during the guilded age and completed around 1905. after a few years, jeweler pierre cartier, came into manhattan in search of a mansion that could serve as a proper storefront for his jewels. he passionately believed this building matched the elegance and stature of his flagship in paris. he quickly set out to own it. in a very uncommon turn of events, he bartered the sale of the building for a double string pearl necklace that was worth around 1 million dollars at the time. the building still stands on fifth avenue today and is one of the very few remaining guilted age mansions in the city 🌇✨ shot on fujifilm x100v #ethanbarberco #nyhistory #oldnewyork #timeless_street #newyorkcitylife #newyorkphotographer #fifthavenue #newyorkcityphotography (at Fifth Avenue) https://www.instagram.com/p/Cke-Khrg7zd/?igshid=NGJjMDIxMWI=

Today's #UrbanExploration post concerns the building known as the Piano Factory aka the Sohmer & Co. Piano factory building on Vernon Boulevard and 31st Avenue in Astoria, New York.
Built in 1866, the building was built in the Romanesque Revival style with a two sided clock tower corner and a copper trimmed mansard roof.
The building was the home of the Sohmer & Co. Piano factory for over a decade. In 1982 the company moved its operations to Ivoryton, Connecticut. For the next couple of decades, the building's ownership changed hands multiple times. In 2007 the building earned landmark status number 2172 courtesy of the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission. The building is now a residential building.

A photo from 2018 and I never posted it! This is Olana, in Greenport, #NewYork, near the city of Hudson. The estate was home to Frederic Edwin Church (1826-1900), one of the major figures in the Hudson River School of landscape painting. The main building was designed by the architect Calvert Vaux working closely with Church. The property was passed along to Church's relatives and later a nephew who was going to put it up for auction (which would lead to development). However after an anti-development campaign, it was purchased by New York State in 1966 and it was opened to the public. It was designated a National Historic Landmark in 1965 and added to the @nationalregisternps in 1966. #ny #SpreadTheHistory #nyhistory #historygirl #explore #adventure #travelblog #travelblogger #blogger #blog #history #ushistory #americanhistory #exploreny #historicsite #architecture #archi_ologie #oldhouselove #olana #olanastatehistoricsite #greenportny #greenport #iloveny #fredericchrch #hudsonriverschool #painter (at Olana State Historic Site) https://www.instagram.com/p/CGTlgdtjytj/?igshid=mk0gi1w07nqw
