Top ten weird ways Oswald Cobbepot gets called in Gotham

As I was rewatching Gotham, I decided to write down every name that people in the show canonically call Oswald Cobblepot aka the Penguin. It was a wild ride. Please enjoy

10. "Funny looking fellow"

(season one)

We start with a simple one. This isn't even an insult, it's just a fact. He is, indeed, a funny looking fellow. I'm pretty sure they say it more than once too.

9. "The Dapper Gangland Kingpin"

This one it's just silly, especially since it was written on a newspaper. Just... that's weird ? Idk it's silly it makes me chuckle

8. "Yellow rat snitch"

We start getting a little weirder. Why a rat? And, more importantly, why yellow???

7. "Stupid lame birdbrain"

Just so mean. Especially since this scene it's his dumb husband making a room full of people chant it

6. "Golden goose"

Right back to season one and it's incredible dialogue. This one is particularly amazing thanks to Oswald's reply to it, which was, of course: "Honk honk". I can't even start to describe that scene. It's a classic.

5. "Beaky nosed freak"

Definitely the best nickname the last season had to offer. Like, you know that moment when a guy kills your bestfriend/girlfriend and you call him the silliest name you can think of? This is one of those times.

4. "Scaley faced bitch"

This is the first one in the show, directly from the first episode. I am a firm supporter of calling men bitches when they deserve it, and he did, so I wholeheartedly approve this message. Adding the scaley face part just makes it more poetic.

3. "Sad little breadhead"

This one from never fails. Imagine it delivered with the most condicending tone in the world. Just amazing. Makes me laugh every time.

2. "Fruitcake leprechaun"

This. This is the one that started it all. It was thinking about this one that I decided that this rewatch I was gonna write down all the nicknames. I dont know if it has something to do with english not being my first language, so I don't have the background of the word "fruitcake" used as an homophobic remark, but this name is one of the funniest things I have ever heard in my life.

This couldn't not be on the first place. I am obsessed with the writers of this show, i want to get inside their brains. Because like what does it mean? How did they come up with this? I need to know every thought that crossed their mind for them to write this. This is art. This is poetry. Incredible. Amazing. Absolutely insane. Kudos to the actor who played Maroni because if they gave me that line I wouldn't be able to say it with a straight face.

I'm 5 eps into Avatar and I'm very... mixed

Now Avatar is one of my most precious shows. For the longest time, Avatar and Sex and the city were my only shows. And then Stranger Things and Barry entered my life and they all became my top 4 (would love a fifth but Lost and OITNB ended so terribly)

These are non-animes ofc

Let's just say my Avatar weekend was planned months ago, and been getting through a few a day

By the end of ep 3 I had thoughts, and by the end of ep 5 I had basically the same thoughts

My biggest con with the show, bc I cant, currently, understand the motives behind it, is... why are they showing season 2 scenes??? And characters??

Like... season 1 of the animated series has 20 eps that are 20 mins each, and season 1 of the live action has 8 hour long eps. There is enough content from season 1 of the animated series to fill your show, no???

Like Ozai's reveal is season 3, but we knew of Ozai's casting quite early, and idk, I dont mind them showing him. But Azula? And Mei and Ty Lee? Why??

And the Owl??? Why??????????? Is it to make Toph the only big reveal/new character in season 2 or something? I've no clue.

But anyway. The bulk of the changes I actually dont mind. I think they did it in a way that flows well. However, they kinda cause something that is truly essential to the story to like... not happen.

So in ep 3, they go to Omashu. Instead of it being like in the OG, they decide to combine the Jet episode and the Northern Air temple episode, INTO the Omashu episode so that the 3 main characters go off and do their own thing. Aang with the wheelchair kid Teo up the mountain (tho they didn't fight off any firebenders which is a fave scene of mine in the show), Sokka with the mechanist talking about the blimp (accurate enough), and Katara off with Jet (accurate enough but would have liked their hideout to be up in the trees, would have been awesome scenery and also made more sense, y'know, being a hideout).

So what this created was separation, and the characters had just gotten to know each other by this point. With the show being only 8 eps, I kinda need to see them connecting more lol this show has a heavy friendship and love theme. Aang and Katara have literally only talked about waterbending every time they've spoke (and Aang has not waterbended once even tho he was an immediate natural at it, but whatever about that).

Again, I didn't mind that they made all these stories happen at Omashu, instead of one of them being Omashu, one of them being at the Northern Air Temple, and the other being in a pretty forest. Missed out on great scenery but, again, wtv.

The most important thing to me is that I need these characters to build their bond first and foremost. Then those changes would matter less.

Even the ep after that, the ep that Omashu should have originally centred around, was Aang meeting Bumi without Sokka and Katara. And instead of Aang and Katara in the love tunnel (since they're basically implying Aang and Katara are not gonna be a thing), they show Sokka and Katara's sibling love as a mean's of escaping the tunnel.

So we're at ep 3 and 4 by this point and they've been separated from Aang the whole time.

Changes from what I can remember off the top of my head (that I want to assume, are for a reason, so I'm not going to say they're changes that I hate, I just, currently, don't get them):

Aang is mildly playful, but defo not Aang level of playful. I'm not expecting him to go penguin sledding or ride the elephant koi, but idk........... something. Anything. It would have been fun if they made him play airball at least. I'm glad there was at least a brief BRIEF scene of them using the mailing system in Omashu.

There's no room at the air temple that shows all the past Avatar statues, which glow when Aang goes into the Avatar state which basically alerts the world he's awakaned. People just kinda........... learn he has awakened. Somehow. But Kiyoshi's statue on Kiyoshi island glowed and it led to a cool scene.

Again, Aang not knowing any waterbending. I wanna believe they've a reason for this.

Zuko doesn't have any moment where he shows any sorta, idk... respect or fear of Aang? Like he hasn't witnessed Aang show power enough to impress him

Zhao and Zuko didn't fight, another fantastic scene to show Zuko's character

Currently no pirates or foretuneteller, but may happen in the next

Iroh's dialogue is a bit... well... its different...

Changes I thought were fine:

Aang can sorta fly

Their discovery of Appa not being as dramatic was fine to me. Classic OG series moment of Sokka realising Appa could fly but I didn't mind them just getting straight to it

Aang not revealing he's the avatar but Gran-gran doing it instead

Aang already having the bison whistle given to him by kid!Bumi

The air temple backstory and Gyatso's speech to Aang not being in a flashback but in the spirit world

Zuko has a briefly important journal

The scroll being given to Katara by her gran instead of stealing it from pirates

Idk why Suki has a mother, she's not really relevant, but its fine

Azula shoots arrows, which is cool

Azula's reveal was half-cool and half-bad. I liked her in the scene, everyone else was an idiot. Did they think it would be that easy?

Aang and Iroh have had two scenes involving a prison together

Koh the face stealer was introduced early instead of during the North Pole eps where he tells Aang who the moon and ocean spirits are, which means he's going to find that out some other way in those eps.

Kioshi giving Aang wisdom before Roku

Katara and Sokka dont come down with a random illness which results in Aang looking for frogs and getting captured by Zhao and saved by Zuko

Scenes I really wish they'd kept:

Okay, this one was really important to me, bc it was the exact moment I fell in love with the show in 2005. Aangs first Avatar state moment.

In order, Aang playfully escapes some firebenders with some slick moves. An alert is made that he's escaped. Him and Zuko have a brief fight (Agni Kai music heck yeah), Aang escapes and attempts to jump off the boat with his glider, Zuko stops him and attacks Aang and then he falls into the ocean. Katara calls his name, he awakens his Avatar state and knocks out Zuko and the firebenders and then Sokka and Katara save him. And then Zuko and Iroh attack Appa and Aang redirects it.

Instead, Aang fights absolutely nobody. There's no alert that he's escaped but Zuko somehow knows?? Aang jumps off and successfully uses his glider and gets onto Appa. Zuko attacks and Katara uses BIG waterbending to save everyone.

That moment adapted well could have sold this show for me.

In addition to that:

The "Avatar" test that proved to the Air Nomads that Aang was the Avatar. Instead they just kinda showed that he was more gifted than everyone else so that's how they knew.

The big change I think most people were a fan of:

Kiyoshi's appearance. Bad. Ass.

What I like:

Sokka and Zuko. I think the casting is fantastic for these two.

Appa and Momo.

People actually being burned alive. Idk, it shows the brutality more in this version

Azula has potential

What I h a t e:

Okay. Ep 1 31:38. This scene kinda shows a few things at once. Its just so… strangely written and acted by everyone except Sokka. Aang overacts (throughout the show), Katara underacts (throughout the show). The way Aang plays with the kids is odd. The way he doesn't even have any sort of reaction to seeing Katara for the first time sucks. Katara looks depressed most of the time and she just stands around a lot without a word to say. Tbh she doesn't even really know how to stand without looking awkward.

Katara did not give Aang her motivational and heartwarming speech at the air temple which basically told Aang that the three of them are now family. He just sorta… calmed himself down. All she did was call his name

Again, the lack of relationship these two have

Ozai continuously praising Zuko and Azula being insecure? So so SO early???

The season 2 stuff. There's enough to gather from season 1 so this makes no sense to me. They've basically shown the swamp ep already. And the swamp ep is where Aang first see's Toph, y'know, super important fan favourite character. Which means she's going to get a different introduction.

Bumi's "tests"? WHERE WERE THEY? HE KEPT SAYING TESTS BUT NONE HAPPENED. ALSO THE LAST ONE IN THE ORIGINAL WAS ABOUT GUESSING WHO HE WAS, BUT AANG KNOWS WHO HE IS THE SECOND THEY MEET. SO HIS CHARACTER WAS COMPLETELD CHANGED. WHY THO.

Uh, that's all I can remember off the top of my head (I just went to check that one timestamp, but other than that, this is all from memory).

I've one ep left and then the last two will be in the North Pole eps.

I know the one ep left before those two will feature Roku's appearance (hopefully on a dragon but prob not) and Zuko as the Blue Spirit as a combo ep, which I think is also combining the Sokka and Katara sick episode but instead of them being sick, they're about to be eaten by Koh (which makes him more menacing, something the OG show didn't do so I'm fine with this). I just hate that these characters are separated so much.

fab nygmobblepot moments that remind you of kd uwu

OMGGGG AHDAHDUIADHAD

I want to use this moment to be sorry to everyone that follows me but keeps seeing my blog full of Nygmobs/Smaylor instead of kaisoo. I usually don’t get attached to otps like this and it happened in an unexpected way for me. But it’s here and I need to compensate for all the years I didn’t watch Gotham and had no idea about Nygmobs spamming everyone and making my heart warm.

But in general, nygmobblepot isn’t a vision of ideal relationship. Both Edward and Oswald (their surnames Cobblepot and Nygma were the ones who originated this name) are stupid and do stupid shit to each other during most of the series. So, a lot of moments related with the actors counterpart (Robin is the actor who plays Oswald and Cory who plays Ed) reminds me of kaisoo more. But a warning here! Although they have a HUGE chemistry on and off screen, they’re mostly friends. Robin is married for almost ten years so it doesn’t mean their closeness is romantic or sexual. But still, some details remind me of kd.

Similarities with nygmobs:

Height difference: it applies to Smaylor as well because it’s their height but it’s really visible in the series. Cory is a bit taller than JI I think and Robin is like 1.65 but KS is not that taller (I can’t believe he’s 1.73 at all, sorry). But, again, this factor is evident during the series and in some moments and it’s cute.

(when they hug, Oswald barely reaches his shoulders [their hugs are the equivalent to kisses in Gotham])

Penguin reference? That’s pretty obvious. Of course I didn’t start shipping nygmobs because one of them is small and has the Penguin nickname but it made so much easier for me to read some of their fics with kd as characters because they fit the profile so much! And also, I believe KD would totally fit the “murder husbands” couple if someone did a fanfic where they just kill everyone. The closest I remember of a fanfic with this criteria is Juice Pouche where Kyungsoo is a vampire and he protects Jongin and Jongin is kind of badass as well. But the kd fandom needs more fics like this. There’s also “(Before the night is over) come see me” where KS is also a vampire and JI a young werewolf but it focuses more on their relationship than a murder husbands idea Gotham shows so well. 

How they met: Gotham’s history has a lot of differences if you compare with other universes, so keep that in mind. In Gotham, Ed works with GCPD but doesn’t feel like himself with the good side. Oswald is the character that spices things up and is a rage of death and destruction and manipulation. But Oswald is infatuated with Jim Gordon (so isn’t the first time it’s implied Penguin is gay) but he goes to the police department to see him. Ed sees him and wants to talk to him no matter the cost. And he does that... And things don’t end that friendly for him because Oswald thinks he’s a weirdo and asks him to fuck off, basically. It reminded me of kd’s first meeting where KS was the one admiring JI all along but JI get frightned. But, during their second meeting, they bond and become friends. For Nygmobs it takes more time for their second meeting but they end up developing and being in good terms :’)

Their personas, sort of: Ed is the tall one, younger and logic. Oswald is the oldest, smaller and that thinks with his heart. I love how JI could show the more logic side of himself during the last few years and, again, while reading Nygmobs fics using kd names, it was easy to fit the profile for me (that was during the time I wasn’t too deep into nygmobs and I didn’t knok them that well. KS looks cold and deatached and that’s why many people got impressed when he said, during Knowing Bros that he would choose love over friendship. He doesn’t play the part but, considering all the context, it fits him pretty well and reading this description of Oswald made me so familiar because it fits KD well. Ofc I don’t know their private lives and whatever but it’s just the impression I had as a viewer and random person;

Drama issue: when I say drama here, it’s related with how people percieve the two OTPs and how different people visualize LGBT relationship in media. Nygmobblepot had a lot of drama involved because they’re the fucking Riddler and Penguin, two of the most famous Batman villains. People saw them in different sorts of media before and others idolize those characters because of videogames and comics. So, when Oswald mentioned expressedly that he was in love with Edward, it caused an uproar in the fandom. People accused the producers and Robin of messing with the comic canon because the fucking Penguin became gay??? Robin was outspoken about the homophobia behind those statements since he’s a gay man himself but yeah, the drama existed. Part of the people invovled with the series rooted for Nygmobblepot, including some writers and the actors (Cory was the one with ambiguous messages about the nature of their relationship but it’s not even close what happened with other series like Supergirl, Supernatural and Sherlock). But it was aired by FOX, a right wing channel and, as you may imagine, they didn’t become canon per se. Actually, after Oswald said he was in love with Ed and planned on confessing to him, the writers presented a clone of Ed’s ex girlfriend with no explanation and purpose, only to separate them for most part of the series future. After that, some people seemed to have FORGOTTEN Oswald was once in love with Edward, rationalizing many things that are hard to explain with a “bro explanation”, they had a scene where the characters would have evolved even more but it was CUTTED and CHANGED and execs added the sentence “we’re brothers” to make EXPLICIT that Nygmobblepot’s relationship wouldn’t be interpreted as a romance at the end of the series (but, honestly, the actors went for the romance path anyway, the deleted scenes and the final episode can’t convince me otherwise).

What’s related with KD, may you ask? I think you’re familiar with all the drama KD faced since 2016 and how many stuff exploded during that time. How many parts are involved into creating a certain image and shifting it to be appealing and “friendly” is similar with what happens with idols. It’s no secret now about many scandals of bullying and other issues that are considered problematic and how they need to be pushed under the rug for companies so idols can make money and be profitable. Especially for male idols, it’s important that they are viewed as desirable and an object of the fans affections. That’s why he needs to be handsome and kind and look like a person that doesn’t exist. If an idol is openly gay, this person isn’t viewed by the major public with the same interest because they can’t fit the fantasy. That’s why scandals involving idols being gay need to be forgotten and deleted from people’s minds, otherwise that celebrity is ostracized. Although we tend to see the Ocident as “progressive”, there’s similar things happening in that industry. If a celebrity is openly LGBT, they don’t receive certain roles or opportunities because of it. There’s still a huge stigma that needs to be broken and we, as a society, are so far way from it. But recognizing those differences exist it’s a step forward.

Similarities with Smaylor

For me, one of the reasons Nygmobblepot works so well is because of the actors. They portrait a good chemistry because of their friendship off screen and some non verbal signs they display around each other are amazing. Those are things that remind me more of KD as we see them in a lot of moments. So, I wanted space to show those comparisons below:

Mutual admiration: it’s something both Smaylor and KD display a LOT and is extrememly outspoken. I really love watching their old interviews because the affection and admiration is so genuine it makes me drawn to them despite not being romantically involved.

Stares and touches: Robin was the responsible for the deep stares and Cory for the random touches. There’s so many gifs of it that is hilarious. It’s like JI divided himself in two cells because we know he’s more known for both >.<

The fact the actors came up with their OTP names: people tend to forget that KD’s real otp name (according with Jongin) is dika. Cory also came up with Nygmobblepot name and Smaylor too <3

So, meanwhile Nygmobs has thropies that work a lot with KD AUs, Smaylor has healthy dynamics seen in public appearances KD made. Like I said above, there’s a huge polemic about shipping Smaylor romantically because Robin is married. On social media, is visible he loves his husband and it’s pretty cute to see. Cory himself mentioned that their relationship was sort of a platonic friendship (whatever that means) but it’s really genuine in terms of affections and display of admiration, something KD has as well.

Probably someone will question that it may changed the way I see KD or if now I ship them as bros. Nothing about that changed. With KD, although there are some similar details, there are internal AND external factors that made me support them in a romantic perspective in the first place. And it didn’t change. 

But both of them (Nygmobs too) make me feel that I’m testimoning something genuine, which is really hard in both kpop and media universes. In one side, we have a LOT of fanservice. And, in the other, it’s mostly a work interaction with lots of queerbating. Yes, Gotham has queerbating aspects in it but it’s not full of queerbating, if it makes sense. The message the actors and some writers wanted to convey are there and really display a romantic direction with character evolution and growth. And, considering the way media is nowadays, it’s nice to see.

1) The Encouraging Leader (H and Pete)

Both didn’t win in their last MCC, and they’re given a chance this time. Both are charismatic and charming leaders in their own ways with a heavy respect for the hermits/Kara that many other competitive players don’t show.

Both have proven their worth in past MCCs, but still sorta underestimate themselves while at the same time knowing they’re pretty damn decent players. Both are comparatively quiet and don’t like to interrupt others, but their ideas are often well thought out.

3) The Dodgebolt Prophecy/ The One Who Has Potential But Is Insecure (False and Grian)

Both are noted to be quite competitive and have pop off potential. They just need someone/something to make them go feral.

4) The Also Insecure Hype Support That Also Pops Off (Ren and Kara)

Both are extremely friendly and supportive people who never hesitate to offer an encouraging word. They keep on underestimating themselves and apologising for “performing badly” but everyone else, especially the leaders (H and Pete), are Having None of It.

Now onto the similarities:

Circumstances, maybe? Pete didn’t get into Dodgebolt last time so he probably wants to (like how H didn’t win in MCC8?). Grian has never been to Dodgebolt and desperately wants to step foot in the arena exactly like pre-MCC9 RenFalse. Kara and pre-MCC9 False were both loyal participants who got bottom half. Fruit and Kara both won once before.

Established duos: hermit duo (RenFalse and GrianFalse) and the non-hermit but we’re friends duo (Cherrybomb and PeteKara).

The structure. Two hermits and one S tier/ beloved leader. H and Pete are Known for getting into Dodgebolt. For the hermit half, Grian has never won, like RenFalse. (Also one HEP member and one MR member but that’s kinda irrelevant lmao)

Training arc. Both built up trust, affection, and there was a lot of chill bantering without ignoring strategy.

H and Pete wholly believed in their insecure teammates

Enter the Dodgebolt Prophecy: H screamed about False carry, Grian got an ace in practice Dodgebolt. Note: both are hermits who had never been into Dodgebolt before.

Slept on (kinda). Blue was almost completely slept on, while Purple was generally ranked 4th to 8th. Purple was not really slept on though because some people (like me haha) know their potential

MCC Day. Cherrybomb (H and Fruit) wanted to win, while RenFalse didn’t believe they could even come close. However, False is more confident now. On a whole, Purple wanted to win.

First half. Blue did average, while Purple... got kinda low to average tbh.

The First Game Changer: Ace Race and HITW. Fruityloops popped off in Ace Race while False magically glitched through the walls with the power of Protagonist Armour (yes she’s the protag no you can’t argue with me /lh). This boosted their morale after a rather depressing start. They all start screaming for the Chill Sensei (Fruit/False) and their amazing performance.

The Hype Support!! Ren and Kara were both ecstatic for the teammates despite thinking they did badly and “dragged the team down”. These two were literally like “Y’ALL AMAZING!! i just suck lmao”. They trusted their team more than they trusted themselves. H and Pete were quick to encourage Ren and Kara. (Of course the other teammates also did, it’s just that the Encouraging Leaders were a bit more significant.)

Then the TRUE GAME CHANGER. If Blue had SG, Purple had Rocket Spleef. Although Purple’s victory was predictable compared to Blue Stab Domination. Either way, this cheered them up immensely. Suddenly, the hermitteam was a threat! Wow! Reddit! Who could’ve known! Much surprise. I am so so surprised that the S tier with hermits (that have been playing for ten years)and amazing support is doing well. Wow. It’s almost like a very specific community totally didn’t believe in Blue and Purple from the very beginning. Underdogs RISE UP! :DDD

Sands of Time. Blue did okay and made smart moves, Purple was scuffed but they were also smart even though Pete died and Grian couldn’t get out. Either way, SoT allowed them to keep/improve their current ranking.

I’ll omit Build Mart, since that was almost exactly like MCC11 Orange Ocelots. However, one similarity: one very important late game. Blue got their least wanted game but did amazing anyway. Purple got their most wanted game and did amazing. They also upset everyone, which I will say again, is very sexy of them. Nothing is better than teams raising the middle finger to Reddit predictions. I’ll say Build Mart could be an extension of Rocket Spleef aka. Purple’s SG since both games brought the teams to Dodgebolt.

Dodgebolt. Oh man. Similarity: Reverse Sweep. Difference: ... on different sides of the reverse sweep

Dodgebolt Prophecy comes true: False almost managed a 1v3, Grian was a fucking beast with his quick fire. Audience started screaming/simping about False and Grian.

KARA CLUTCHED NOT UNLIKE FALSE SUPREMACY!! We have underestimated women on the arena with their boizz (and False for Purple) cheering for them!!

Let us talk about Fruity B and Grian. One takes his time to shoot and gets killed because of it. One does NOT take his time to shoot. Both strategies were successful to some degree. I just think this is funny.

One thing I’ll always remember is that how H screamed “LET’S MAKE THIS INTERESTING!!” This to me, boosted his team because it sort of implies even if they lost Dodgebolt, they already won because they gave Green a victory they had to fight for. Purple certainly made the Dodgebolt interesting with the initial domination and Grian’s quick fire. This is why I think they were happy with second— they popped off and had no regrets.

In conclusion: both teams completely fucking upset Reddit with SG and Build Mart. And they’re so (deservedly) smug about it because they KNOW their worth, it’s just that A Lot of People Didn’t. They had similar structures with similar dynamics and cheeky bantering/supportive/wholesome vibes. We have no choice but to stan.

Hi holly! If you don't mind could I maybe get your thoughts on this? While I think Oswald absolutely still loves and misses Elijah, I also think he believes his father wouldn't love him if they had met while Oswald was truly himself, which is why he often just mentions Gertrud as being the only one to love him truly unconditionally. Or is it just poor writing that Oz doesn't mention his dad as much?

Gosh, this is a GOOD QUESTION/THOUGHT.

Hmmmm.... when he was taunting Sophia about Falcone not loving/respecting her, Ozzie does say that he can’t relate because his PARENTS, plural, ‘loved me unconditionally’ (that’s during the return of Martin IIRC, when Ozzie fakes Martin’s death). That would suggest that he perhaps DOES believe that Elijah would have loved him no matter what, even if he’d been a full on violent criminal when they met or if he’d returned to being one when Elijah was still alive. But then again, he may have just been saying that to taunt Sophia and it wasn’t an accurate reflection of his true feelings. So it’s really up to personal preference how you read that I guess.

Something relevant to this, I think, is how Ozzie was always SUPER ANXIOUS to keep the truth/depths of his criminal acts/nature from Gertrude, just as much as he later tried to keep his criminal past from Elijah. That suggests to me that, actually, a large part of him lived in very real fear that GERTRUDE wouldn’t have loved him (anymore) if she knew about his violent/criminal urges. It was only, I’d argue, in those last few moments before her death that he was dissuaded from this fear, since Gertrude’s loving behaviour towards him remained the same, despite the truth of his criminal escapades being revealed to her and despite him outright saying in front of her that he was going to kill Galavan (or whatever he threatened).

Considering that.... hmmm, the way I see it, his fear that Elijah wouldn’t love/accept him as a violent criminal really just MATCHES his previous feelings about Gertrude...

And I do think that his late night conversation with Elijah where Elijah talked about their family having a history of ‘demons’ acted similar to Gertrude continuing to display her love just before her death. Because that was all about Elijah saying he understood Oswald struggled with dark urges, but that he accepted him regardless. Obviously there was also a lot of talk about Oswald leaving his criminal life behind and not acting on said urges, so you could interpret it as implying Elijah was accepting of Oswald only because Oswald was fighting his demons/darkness (or at least that this was Oswald’s take away from the conversation). But, idk, I always got the impression Elijah was reassuring Oz that even if he did grow violent again Elijah would still love/accept him, because he understood (or at least believed) that such behaviour was simply a family trait (curse?) Ozzie had obviously inherited. 

There’s also other little things Elijah did that implied very much to me that he was accepting of Ozzie’s criminal life/behaviour - eg. when Grace shows him the newspaper article about Ozzie’s life as Penguin, Elijah comments positively about he didn’t realise Ozzie had been such a dapper criminal (or something like).

Soooo.... I think, for me, overall, I do feel that Ozzie believes Elijah, like Gertrude, DID love him unconditionally and would have done even if Oz had been a criminal when Elijah was alive. BUT, Ozzie’s general issues of self-worth (which are connected to lots of other things as well, not just fears of his violent urges/behaviour being criticised) very likely makes him DOUBT this on a more emotional level, just like he doubted Gertrude’s ability to love him as a criminal.

...which is a long way of reaching the conclusion that, yes, I AGREE with you :p But at the same time I don’t exactly. I think logically Ozzie recognises Elijah loved him as unconditionally as Gertrude, but emotionally he can’t quite accept the fact in the same way he was able to with his mother BECAUSE, ofc, Elijah ONLY ever knew him when he was reformed/brainwashed, meaning he never had those vital few moments with Elijah that he did with Gertrude before she died where he WAS a violent criminal but still loved.

But that little technicality aside - I think it very much works that he wouldn’t talk as much about his father because of that niggling doubt/fear over Elijah’s love for him, yes! 

Although I also think the minimal about of time he knew Elijah should not be discounted - they knew each other for only, what, a few WEEKS after all? Even taking into account the deep love Ozzie obviously immediately developed for Elijah in that time, the impact Elijah had on Ozzie’s life simply COULDN’T be as emotionally/psychologically deep and significant as Gertrude, you know? So, even without fears about Elijah’s love, it... generally makes sense that Ozzie would fixate more on Gertrude still to me (with the naming the sub and the choir after her and stuff) - he may love and continue to grieve the loss of his father, but it’s always his mother he will want to honour.

(oh additional - there is, ofc, the added fact that he was, indirectly, responsible for Gertrude’s death, which may be another reason he feels a need to honour her memory via public means in a way he doesn’t for Elijah? ie. he feels he ‘owes’ it to Gertrude?)

I wouldn’t call it ‘bad writing’ in any case :p

(.....although, at the same time I will say that I suspect all this analysis we’re gleaning from the canon is....not necessarily stuff that was being consciously/explicitly considered by the writers....I guess I’m just not sure if I feel like it necessarily NEEDED to be? since I feel like Ozzie not mentioning his dad kinda works okay regardless - I’ll confess it’s not been something I’ve had any issue with.....buuut, my attitude towards the show has been a tad, idk, lax/casual since the start of S05!)

okay so, disclaimer: I don’t talk about it because who has the chance, but mary poppins used to be one of those movies I could rewatch for DAYS as a kid to the point where my aunt can’t look at it anymore without feeling sick ops and when the sequel came out I went like OMG SDLKGJSDKJLG NEED TO WATCH XD so, re the sequel: I realized it was a nostalgia operation but it was well-done, I really liked the take, I might have shed a few tears at the end and the fact that everyone wanted jane and jack to get together that was a++++, ADULT!MICHAEL ;________________; MY HEART ;_____; anyway I found it a really nice and enjoyable movie? not as good as the original but lovely anyway.

basically the idea was... jaime being mary and brienne being bert just with switched personalities in the sense that OBVIOUSLY he’s way more chill and she’d be like WHAT THE FUCK WHY, but REWIND because I had come up with the srsly cracked backstory.

as in, the part about the original implied a prequel where the lannister kids were the ones actually getting the magical babysitter who happened to be *cough* the blackfish *cough* and we found out that all the tullys are actually in the magical nanny business right, and it’d happen when tyrion’s like six or seven and the other two are thirteen-fourteen-ish, obviously cersei stays who she is but having the external influence etc. etc. makes jaime put two and two together and he’s like damn but that sounds like a dream job I mean I do the same stuff with tyrion all the time surely can’t be too hard...?, and like tywin is too much of a terrible mess for anyone to fix so that doesn’t ever get fixed but before leaving they manage some arrangement I hadn’t thought in depth yet so that tyrion actually gets to have a nice life with jaime and not with his father or sister but at that point jaime goes to brynden like ‘hey you think that maybe there’s job offers where you come from’, brynden is like ‘hmmmmmm see you in a few years’. cue few years, jaime disappears somewhere and tyrion who at that point is a teen himself is like NO IDEA WHERE HE ENDED UP when he’s like the only person who knows where he ended up. oops.

CUE ACTUAL AU: years later, we have the actual movie setting with rhaegar/elia being mr/mrs banks and aegon/rhaenys being jane and michael with ADDED COMPLICATION THAT RHAEGAR HAS THE ILLEGITIMATE KID WITH LYANNA AND EVERYONE KNOWS BUT NO ONE WANTS TO BRING IT UP. cue rhaegar not being the nice person he was before blah blah and thinking too much about working in aerys’s bank the prophecy obviously they need the nanny and jaime shows up because he totally got the job (meanwhile he’s become besties with cat and edmure but shh) and he’s like oKAY WE NEED TO FIX THIS MESS, cue magical adventures in which he manages to do more or less what mary did in the original movie with just a lot more bad humor, managing to make sure rhaegar/elia/lyanna turn into a functional-ish ot3 with bonus extended stark family because WHY NOT, while the kids all wonder if the local chimneysweeper brienne with whom he seems like he has a history with is his girlfriend or not because DAMN IT WHAT’S IT BETWEEN THEM THERE’S UST! (spoilers: there is obviously and they met each other before either when they were kids or while jaime was doing the magical training but I had to decide on that lmao) brienne is not so keen to jump into moving murals on the ground but hey she apparently can’t deny jaime anything so WHY THE FUCK NOT. (obv. they make out like pros where no kids can see them.) anyway, after jaime finally manages to fix the ot3 and leaves again we do the time skip...

TO MOVIE TWO where we have grown up jon/aegon/possibly rhaenys - jon is the jane of the situation with ygritte being jack, aegon and rhaenys prob. share the house, one of them probably has oc kids from some crackship I’ll come up with or maybe they ended up with relatives’s kids on them idk that’s to be figured out, they’re about to lose the house and so on (while jon goes to organize union strikes lol), they obv. took from their father when it came to practicality (jon maybe less but he’s not the one living in the house ops), bam jaime comes back like GUYS YOU REALLY CAN’T HANDLE YOURSELVES CAN YOU, at this point I’d have probably had the tullys + tyrion show up, ofc he and brienne at that point are going steady and so on (EVERYONE AGES SLOWLY IT’S MAGICAL REALISM). cue plot for the second movie, there you go.

also if you want the extra casting I was def. gonna have stannis and davos as the admiral and the (platonic??) bf living in front of the banks’s, also fuck I knew I recast uncle albert too but who the fuck remembers could have been gerion?maybe? IDK I prob. should have written it down somewhere. anyway. ONE DAY MAYBE I’LL MANAGE TO WRITE IT. that said if you wanted to know ‘but was it an excuse to put jaime in a white and red dress with the pretty bonnet while he argued with penguins who were smitten with him’ the answer could have been: no but it was a good 30% of the reason why I decided it had to exist.

Hi is me no Bepo fashion this time I'm afraid ,BUT I do have angst!(this is gonna be long and i apologize for that)

So I believe in one comic it was implied that shachi had a crush on law, I imagine that at some point he was just like "ok I NEED to het over this. It's ridiculous! He only has eyes for Bepo!" And just trying his hardest to just move on and it just not working damnit!!!!!

So he comes to the conclusion, " I need to tell him and get rejected,but will hurt but I NEED it!". This imaginary situation is after the Yuri incident.

And thus after days of hyping himself up he finds it in him to get a moment alone with law. "Law listen I know what the answer is but I just need to say this, I....I have feelings for you and I need ..I NEED to..."

And after a beat law just replied with a " No Shachi." Not COLDLY or anything but just that topical Law way. And Shachi just takes a moment to nod, apologies and walk away.

Later penguin just finds Shachi in their room just softly crying but looks at him and confirms to him that , he did it, the outcome they KNEW would happen did and now he needs to face the hurt and needs a hug from his best bro.

No one talks about it later, they don't need to. They all just move on. Stronger than ever.

Tbh I can see something similar happening with a strawhat too, probably sanji if I had to guess, and later he and Shachi kinda form a 'we were rejected by our captain' club and help each other move on.

Maybe make out a lil idk just a thought

100% agree with lu*san and luffy's method of rejection is also matter of fact but with gentleness of a sledgehammer. i like sanji having a helpless crush, like he never managed to get along with zoro and zoro getting all of luffy's love on top of feeling inferior to zoro's strength, on top of not being luffy's first most important right hand man.....sanji would internalize all of that and drive himself crazy...he loves luffy and believes in him and being with luffy gives him strength to do anything cuz thats just THE LUFFY EFFECT - but you know..you know..insecure bitch :)))))) hehehehe looove love that you mentioned it im a big fan.
