it started as little touches on your inner thigh, but you just pass it off as stiles being clingy; the brunette normally always having an arm around your shoulders or fingers intertwined with your own.

you do get a bit suspicious when his hands travel higher and higher, finally stopping him when his fingers brush against the cotton of your panties, dangerously close to your core.

"stiles!" you hiss, causing a cocky grin to form on your boyfriends face. "scott and malia are literally right there, along with half of our year group!" you say, gesturing your head to your friends that are looking through a bookshelf no less than 10 steps away.

Amanda Young style and fem whatnot thoughts

Once again here to speak my thoughts that nobody asked for because I love documenting my brain which I have to boot up like a chainsaw. I've spoken about Amanda's appearance before! Going over her outfits throughout the franchise and such and how I believe it kinda symbolises the stages she's at- I am in the firm belief her cutting her hair was almost like a rebirth for example.

However, right now I'm looking at the ''gender representation'' and stylisation side I guess? Which, I want to state- These are my opinions and thoughts and are by no way to say I'm like the only CORRECT view and anyone else's interpretation of Amanda that's different to mine is wrong, because I like seeing everyone's various takes on her character. With that said! I see Amanda as somebody who tries to be feminine, but can't express it truly how she wants? Down to factors such as she can't afford certain things like makeup accessories, and that she needs to have more of a practical wardrobe whilst being an apprentice. Oh! Also having to hide her identity at times. (I also want to slide in the fact that I don't think she's hyper feminine or masculine, honestly? She's just Amanda really, I wouldn't personally put a label on it when it comes to that.)

The first look we get of Amanda, she's in a way more revealing outfit than her future ones whilst working under John. This could just be her style, which to a certain degree I agree on... However there also could be an aspect of performative femininity, seeing as she's not ''reformed'' at this point and it's suggested in the Saw wiki that she has prostituted herself to be able to fund her drug addiction before. Basically, catering to the male gaze to get what she wants. She's wearing a cut off shirt which exposes her shoulders and collar area a lot, something we don't see again until Saw 3- And even then it's still not as cut off as the purple one. Amanda also has fishnets, a skirt and boots on. If I had to say how I view Amanda' style myself, I'd go with Hot Topic thief and or something alternative like ''grungy.'' We've also got the fact she has black nail polish on, eyeliner and more curled out hair- Even when she grows it back, it's not as wavy as it's seen here, so it's possible she's either just heavily dishevelled or she purposely has maybe curled it out a little. Once again, this could possibly be her trying to look more appealing to others by ''grooming'' herself better. However, I also think she wants to just for herself really.

Now, we've got her Saw X look, which to me is the most heavily influenced by John. Amanda has cut off her hair to I guess kinda a pixie-bob cut? A big leap from her previous haircut which had it falling at least over her shoulders if not longer. She's also very bare faced, with no heavily noticeable touches of makeup anywhere to be seen. Her clothes are drastically more practical than her previous outfit. A form fitting shirt, cargo pants and combat boots. The only influence I feel she has on this outfit is the choker and little earring. You can't really blame her for the change though- Amanda just wouldn't be putting time into something like beauty cosmetics or making any fashion statement when she's got shit to do... Y'know like make death traps and kidnap people, activities where the way you look doesn't matter and you wouldn't want your clothes to get caught on something especially.

Before I fully move on to her Saw 2 look, two honourable mentions! These both showcase the fact that nowadays, when Amanda is out and about, she's trying to hide her identity. She can't really draw any attention to herself and that is reflected in what she wears. The Scott Tibbs Documentary look has to be one of my favourites, I love the skull trousers so much and they are definitely something she wears because she likes the LOOK, not just because of ''simplicity.''

(Amanda has them on again in the deleted nightmare scene as well, so it's a recurring piece of her wardrobe.)

The pig outfit, though I believe can be slightly stupid at times, due to the fact that it's probably less convenient than whipping on something like a balaclava with a hoodie and a bit more out there visually too- It still does it's main intended job, which is to conceal the identity of the Jigsaw apprentices. With the one I've selected above, this is when Amanda is going to abduct Adam, so obviously this is still pretty early in the timeline? We can see a re-appearance of smudged eye makeup like in her introduction.

TRYING TO GET BACK ON TRACK! Here we have her ''blue'' outfits as I dub them. I'm aware there is a time jump between them, however generally what I have to say for them is the exact same? We can see that Amanda is growing her hair out more and I would say these are very relaxed fits. Saw 2 Amanda has to be one of her most basic outfits I'd say, a plain blue shirt and blue sweatpants to go along with it.... The wiki feet people are going insane too.

WOOOOO! ON TO ANOTHER OF MY FAVOURITE OUTFITS. YOU JUST KNOW SHE STOLE THAT BELT FROM HOT TOPIC I AM SO SORRY! Saw 3 Amanda to me is a mix between something like her look in Saw X and then her look in Saw (2004)- I also love the contrast between it and the Saw 2 look, a blue vs red type feel almost? You're definitely more inclined to see Amanda as intimidating here than in blue. Comparisons aside, let's look at the actual fit this woman has on! Once again, she sports cargo pants with a belt to accompany and combat boots too. The shirt isn't as cut off as the purple one as I stated before, but it leaves a lot of her collar and back area exposed. It's her influence alongside John's- And her almost I wouldn't say rebelling? But defining herself outside of him. If I once again want to go full English teacher analysis... We could make the reach and say that her physically exposing herself is paired with how she emotionally is exposed as well. Her lowest points if you will. BUT! We'll move on from that so I can ramble about some other accessories. Amanda is wearing a gold ring and a watch, nothing too out there but I wanted to point them out seeing as I am covering the WHOLE outfit. Her hair is now at it's original length, once again reinforcing the fact she is almost reverting back to her old style but at the same time redefining it? Hair growth to show personal growth. (Some more honourable mentions.)

Here we have her dress, leather jacket and DBD concept art! First we'll look at the dress. It's honestly really cute to me- The ribbon around her neck just really makes it AMANDA, otherwise there isn't too much to say on the design outside of that and it's colour. Then moving on to the leather jacket, it's something I can definitely see her wearing a lot on top of her other outfits. OK! This is getting super fucking long now, I'll try and finish off soon- I have to say I love the DBD concept art and the in game designs too, I can 100% see where they've taken inspiration from with the outfits. I'm in firm belief Amanda deserves to have her arm sleeves so where they've combined that and the Saw 3 look is URHG YES. I also enjoy their take on her leather look, fleshed out the design more in my opinion. Anyway... If you've somehow gotten all the way down here? Jesus Christ, thanks I guess? I am someone who loves over analysing things and discussing characters/movies like this, so I just couldn't help myself anymore. i wanna start making comics but like. i dont really know how??? are there any tips that you could give me perhaps?

i've been working on trying to compile a list of resources for people (@aangsfrogs--i didn't forget!) who want to make comics for a long time. It would consist of some of my personal tips and a lot of links to other people's PDFs and youtubes. But that's...a hefty project, so if you had any specific questions for the meantime, my askbox is open!

But, for just beginning, here would be my tips:

Read comics. Read manga and webcomics and cartoons and medical comics. There is so much out there, and reading is such a big way to learn. If you see something you like, take a moment to think about why you like it. Are the expressions or colors appealing? Did it make you feel a certain emotion? Analyze what the artist may have done to get across what they did. (Is it the camera angle? the style they chose to draw in? the paneling? the pacing? the color? etc.) Doing this over time will help you recognize the tools available for telling stories through this medium, and you'll be able to put them in your own work.

Try to think about what you want to make comics about. What moves you? What topics interest you? What ideas or tropes do you love in media or think about often? What do you hate and wish was done better? What characters are you drawn to, or what characters do you want to create? (What about them compels you?) I find it's hard to create an idea out of thin air, but if you start writing down random ideas you have, you'll start thinking about them, and over time, you'll have a bank of things to pull from when you want to create.

Lastly, anatomical skill or knowledge of color does not a comic make! You don't have to know much to begin, and there aren't rules. Just start drawing what is meaningful to you!

This is just cursory and doesn't get into super specifics like paneling or scripts or plotting or colors or thumbnailing or....etc, but I'll try to expand my list of resources and get that out! And, hmu if you have any specific questions on topics!

Scott McCloud's Understanding Comics and his Making Comics. These books are taught in like, every comic class ever. While not my complete favorite, they do a good job of showing some history and fundamentals, and how easy it is to make comics even if you don't have a lot of drawing experience.

99 Ways to Tell a Story: Exercises in Style by Matt Madden: Really good if you don't know how to start analyzing comics. (Also it's just a fun visual exercise.) It shows the same short story done in 99 different styles with different emphasis on different moods and points of view.

The PreHistory of The Far Side: A 10th Anniversary Exhibit by Gary Larson and The Calvin and Hobbes: Tenth Anniversary Book by Bill Watterson: Two great books with work from my two favorite cartoonists. They both have writings from the author about getting ideas, developing stories, and being a comic artist.

Uncanny Bodies: Superhero Comics and Disability, edited by Scott T. Smith and José Alaniz and Black Comics: Politics of Race and Representation, edited by Sheena C. Howard and Ronald L. Jackson II: These two aren't really about making comics, but they are great collections of analysis about old and new comics alike.

By no means a complete list, but some good ones that I can think of off the top of my head.

There's also the book Webtoon School: Everything you need to know about webtoon creation and story writing. To be honest, I didn't read this completely through because it was a bit more fundamental than I was expecting, but it gives a good cursory look of how to write comics if you're just starting out! It covers some history, how to write stories and arcs, etc.

Also, look to your favorite writers! A lot of webtoon/webcomic artists do tutorials or youtube videos. for instance, velnxi has this great tutorial up I really suggest looking at here.

New interview with Simon Stephens and Andrew Scott on their upcoming play Vanya, from The Financial Times

“We must declare point-blank that nobody can make head or tail of anything in this world,” wrote Anton Chekhov in a letter in 1888. Rarely is that better expressed than in Uncle Vanya, his humane masterpiece, published 10 years later, a play about a bunch of disconsolate souls rattling around a Russian country estate. Forced to stop their daily routine by the arrival of a demanding guest, they drift, doze, drink, take a look at their lives and are dismayed by what they see.

Many of them feel sorry for themselves, particularly Vanya, who at 47 is undergoing a midlife crisis of epic proportions. Yet as actor Andrew Scott observes, in the hands of Chekhov, they become not only painfully recognisable and funny, but quite heartbreaking.

“It’s funny because life is funny and there’s no tragedy if there’s no comedy,” says Scott, who is known to many for his “hot priest” in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Fleabag, and for superb stage performances as Hamlet and as Garry Essendine in Present Laughter. “Chekhov has such enormous compassion for people. He was a doctor and he saw how people were. I think that’s why it’s so moving.”

Scott should know. He’s about to play every one of the characters in Vanya, a striking new version by Simon Stephens. Here, the actor will play not only the protagonist but also his gentle niece Sonya, weary doctor Astrov, the pompous visiting academic and everybody else rambling about the estate in the sweltering late-summer heat.

So, I ask the writer and actor when we meet one morning before rehearsals, why is this? Could they not afford an ensemble? “I have a very bad reputation . . . ” jokes Scott, deadpan — to Stephens’ delight — before the two explain that the idea is to honour the radical impulse of Chekhov’s drama.

“I think one of the great ironies is that sometimes when you say ‘Chekhov’, people say, ‘Oh my God, is it very serious?’” says Scott. “But it’s the opposite: it’s completely human and wonderful and light as the air. And radical. He broke the form. Characters talk to the audience; they forget what they’re saying. So how do you catch that radical spirit?”

To which Stephens adds: “If you look at photographs of Chekhov, he’s funny, he’s sexy, he’s got a little twinkle in his eye. He’s not a figure from a museum.”

Chekhov chafed against the melodramatic theatrical norms of his day. “In life, people do not shoot themselves or hang themselves or fall in love, or deliver themselves of clever sayings every minute,” the playwright complained. “They spend most of their time eating, drinking, running after women or men, talking nonsense.” In his plays, one character’s heart might be breaking as everyone else witters on about the weather.

This new version heightens that poignant paradox, says Scott: it responds to Chekhov’s formal innovation by highlighting the fact that the characters, all caught up in their own problems, are far more similar than they realise.

“Usually, in the rehearsal process, you’re in charge of one character and you defend them,” he says. “This is like looking after all these people and not judging them. I have to invest in them all . . . And so much of what they are talking about — they have exactly the same wants and needs.

You play the lightness because the darkness will play itself’

“When it’s just one person [playing all the parts], you think, ‘Come on, what are you doing? This is pointless.’ And at the end, what does it matter? What are these tiny little things that we obsess about? So it squeezes out the absurdity of our preoccupations as human beings. It highlights and distils the comedy of it.”

Many recent Chekhov productions have shrugged off period detail to draw out the plays’ topicalities. But for Stephens, the genius of Chekhov’s work was that by showing humdrum life on stage, he touched on something more fundamental.

“You could say that Vanya is a great play about the cost-of-living crisis or the environment,” says Stephens. “You hear Astrov talking about the inability of humans to rise to the challenges of living in an eroding world and it feels as though it’s written this week. But for me, what’s compelling are the deeper truths about how you fall in love, how you live when you know you’re dying, how you make sense of the life that’s not been what you hoped it would be. I think there’s a timelessness to that interrogation.”

Scott and Stephens have worked together several times, and there’s a clear sympathy and ease between them. Stephens, flung over a chair, rangy and ebullient; Scott coiled up on his seat, quietly mischievous. Stephens wrote the 2008 monologue Sea Wall for Scott, an intensely moving portrayal of grief. Key to its success was their mutual ability to combine emotional honesty with lightness of touch. As Scott puts it: “You play the lightness because the darkness will play itself.”

But they also share — together with Sam Yates, director of Vanya — an instinct to experiment with form. “Theatre is the lie that tells the truth,” says Scott. “Everybody sits there, knowing that those people [on stage] are pretending to be someone else. So why not acknowledge that in some way?”

In Sea Wall, Scott wandered the stage as the audience came in, then slipped into conversation with them, making the shift from actor to character hard to pinpoint. It was an approach that invited the audience to work with him in imagining the characters of the story.

Vanya builds on that. Walking through the rehearsal room, I notice props scattered about — a bunch of roses, a bottle of vodka, a kettle. The piece will be theatrical, Scott says — “You want to be able to create the world” — and Stephens’ version, though distilled, retains the dialogue. But again, the audience will play a key role in imagining the characters.

“You need them,” says Scott. “They’re your collaborators. If the audience are alert to something, their perspective on you changes. So it’s genuinely honouring the audience’s intelligence.”

He recalls experiencing this alchemy in action while playing twin brothers in Christopher Shinn’s Dying City in 2006. At one point he had to transform from one brother to the other on stage. “I remember during previews I was trying all sorts of different things. Then I thought, ‘I’m not going to do anything, at all. I’m just going to sit there.’ And people said to me, ‘I saw you change from one person to another.’ But it was absolutely an illusion.”

Stephens hopes this approach will build on the drama’s empathy, encouraging audiences to find common ground with all the characters — and with one another. In Chekhov’s final version of the play, Vanya and Sonya return to their labours in a climactic scene that contains both solace and aching sadness. His characters may despair, but they keep on keeping on. For Stephens, there’s great beauty and humanity in that honesty.

I remember a few years ago you were drawing a lot of snk related stuff. Do you think that you are making a comeback sometime? I feel like the fandom is much more calmer now.

Ohh that was such a long time ago and it was such fun time… well, a lot of it was stressful as hell because of the fandom and the shipwars and the non-shipping crowd who are quick to shit on artists who draw niche things; but to be honest, this isn’t the only reason why we stopped posting snk fanart. The main reason was that we were getting burnt out and wanted to consume some new media, and it’s nothing unusual or bad: it happens all the time. We dive deep into the title, have a lot of ideas, create AUs, draw and post stuff, and then after some time we move on. There are some titles that we revisit every other year or so, without diving too deep into them, and sometimes we just randomly remember about the characters and get the urge to draw something with them (we’ve done a couple of Zevi sketches even after technically stopping posting snk, as you might’ve seen).

With SnK, even though it’s been quite a few years already, I think it’s still kind of fresh in our minds, so we don’t have anything new to say with our posts or my art…yet. So I can’t really predict when we’ll come back, but you know what they say; a criminal always returns to the scene of the crime lol We love Shingeki very much, so even if it takes a long time, it’s inevitable.

Also, we are very grateful to have people who remember our stuff from back then and even wait for us, I am honestly surprised by it... So thank you so much for asking <3

Which one of the Scott Pilgrim girls do you like? And other than Todd and Wallace, which other male character do you like?

My absolute favourite is probably Julie, and it’s partially because I have the Aubrey Plaza Bias, but I also really liked what they did with her character in the anime. She has the best faces, she’s so animated and so evil. I would love the second season (that we won’t get) simply to look at her more lol

I am also super weak for Kim, she and Julie both are my “best girls”. Kim’s personality just perfectly fits the type of character that I usually like, and I really like the bitter-sweetness that comes with it.

Speaking of the anime specifically, I also really like what they did with Ramona and Roxie. Their relationship didn’t get much depth in the movie (for obvious reasons, they didn’t have time to dive deeply into any relationship), and it was very delightful to see them work through what happened between them… in a way, I guess. Plus, Roxie is an idiot and that’s awesome lol

Ep3 was too much for me in general, all the girls’ interactions were very good + oh my god Hollie’s hot.

Now for the guys… Oh, Gideon, absolutely, he is great. He is such a highlight of the movie, we adore him a lot. So it was interesting to see his trajectory in the anime, and I am very happy that he is just… naturally evil and controlling fuck lol

Matthew was very enjoyable in the anime and I’m glad he got more attention, Lucas was animated very nicely and had a couple of very funny lines. I also think I developed a soft spot for Stephen at some point lol

Oh good question! Other than Trey/Riddle and Azul/Idia, the first couple that comes to mind is Rook/Vil, who pretty much already feel like a couple that’s been together for quite some time. Their household situation would probably be complicated, but in general they’re each other’s partners for life I think.

I would also say ADeuce but they’re the type of couple who is always together but just can’t settle down because of some stupid reasons. Jack might steal Deuce from Ace and settle down with him lol Who else… Kalim and Jamil are stuck together, they don’t count lol

Letters From Watson Liveblog - Jan. 3

The Gloria Scott, Part 2 of 3

You know a character's bad when they got cringe manners. Here we are introduced to Hudson, whose name suggests he's not the J.A. on Trevor Senior's arm as seen in the last letter.

I also found that neat drawing of Hudson's introduction here with other drawings. These would appear to be drawn by Sidney Paget, noted Sherlock Holmes illustrator.

I think there's a general assumption made that Sherlock is cold and calculating early on, and only becomes softer later in life. But I feel like moments such as these show that he's always been a caring person, just with a few unique habits.

I know it's just a metaphor, but can you imagine a story where Sherlock fights the literal Devil? I've always loved supernatural takes on fairly mundane characters, Holmes especially.

This is off topic and unrelated to the story at hand, but I can't help but find it funny at how many quotation marks are being used here due to how many levels in the story is being told. I'm also imagining Holmes doing Hudson's voice as he's telling this to Watson.

Good on Holmes for being able to crack that code so quickly. It's also neat that it's not even that indecipherable. I think given enough time, anybody probably could have found the hidden message, but it goes to show Sherlock's skill that he solved it in a few minutes.

Manc hetalia fan here, I think he's either Cornish, manc/Liverpudlian or a Yorkie because no way is that man a Londoner Tory (sorry if you support them, I really don't and don't think he would because of his punk phase)

I really do love Mancunian Arthur! I find him to be a very cool character, mancs are incredibly cool people. He could also be Northern mainly because of his last name: Kirkland. Kirk meaning church in northern english or scotts which comes from the old norse word 'kirkja' and last names had been introduced to the UK in the 11th century by Norman Barons after the Norman Conquest which meant he was definitely alive when people started to have last names so he (including his brothers) could've possibly been part of the church at the time or they simply chose that name as if it were an online username lmao. I just think it's a pretty interesting surname to have since he does feel conflicted alot about being either protestant or catholic later in his life.

By the way, it's against my code to shade anyone's depiction of England but Londoner Tory is the exception. Not only because I don't like tories but I just find him to be REALLY boring and decided on a whim to make it look like he has opinions. I'm also just not very keen on southeastern Arthur in general, though he would very likely live in the southeast for the longest time — Possibly for convenience or preference — I believe him to be the kind of guy whom loves to travel so it's plausible he would've stayed here and there around the country. Unfortunately though, I have to disagree with you about him not being a tory because he had a punk phase as he strikes me as someone whose (political) views would be pretty inconsistent. Arthur not being a tory and having a punk phase is obviously cool! Him not being a tory just because he had a punk phase makes me a little iffy if I have to be honest. I think it'd be a story if he went from tory to punk though — a complete 180 lmao.

But to be fair, I actually do like the more conservative or immoral Arthur for he is fun to draw and write about. He could also be incredibly useful in stories like that one AU I had about England obsessing falling in love with his own reflection and objectifying himself yet he is awfully lgbtqphobic, misogynistic and creepy overall. Or England in my other AU being a total cunt towards some of the countries and acting like a massive arse-licker towards America (even if he did wrong) which would anger America when England's clone starts to disagree with him.

I'd find Arthur to be completely boring if he always had the exact same views and morals as me. Generally, I see him as very far from a nice man, he could be a villain but he's tragically romanticized at times whether it's his appearance or behaviour; whether he's romanticising himself or it's other people seeing him in rose tinted glasses — which some people do make him out to be this cute guy that does no wrong — just like how people see a country. I also really love linking my headcanons with facts and logical reason so Cornish Arthur seems like the most plausible headcanon to me. I do intend to explain this further in another post since this is getting very long and I've already went off topic a bit here :')

First of all thank you very much! Now, I have actually drawn a little sketch for you. But I'm gonna put it in another post cause I just wanted to use this ask to say a couple things so it doesn’t get bogged down by this, cause this happens to touch close to some topics I wanted to mention for a while now but my brain has a hard time letting me just make permanent text posts on this blog specifically since it's supposed to be for my art.

Long post so I'm putting it below the read more. Sorry if this seems like an inappropriate reply, I really just don’t know how or where else to say these things.

TL;DR: I've given myself strict rules on what I'll personally depict in my mcyt art, I'm not actually fond of flower husbands or Jimmy and Scott's dynamic in general (adore both of them individually though), and I still don't really know much about e1 outside of Lizzie so have 3rd life instead.

First thing is something I probably shoulda said a long time ago cause I've gotten a few asks about drawing explicitly romantic or sexual stuff, but I don't intend to draw either of those things. I have a big difference between what I'm comfortable consuming and what I'm comfortable making myself. I gave myself a lot of personal boundaries when decided to draw mcyt stuff based on my own comfort.

Rule 1 is no sexualization or gore, basically keep things in the realm of the same rating as the hermits.

Rule 2 is that my designs would only be based on skins, lore, and fanon, and never anything around their irl selves.

Rule 3 is not to draw anything that was more than interpretive in relation to romantic vs platonic.

Rule 0.5, the only exceptions to be made would be for references to gags they themselves have made in videos.

I know some of my stuff pushes against the line on these rules, especially for jokes or replying to asks that use shipping terms, but they're ones I don't intend to ever fully cross with my own art. There's a lot of other amazing artists on here who are more comfortable with drawing that stuff.

So if you ever send in a request for art just know that ones that push against or cross these rules to me, I'm going to skip over them. Not anything against the request it's just my own rules. Sometimes I also just don't get to them, but I'd appreciate those rules being kept in mind when requesting.

Second topic starts with a bit of a story. So, I got introduced to the life series through a Grian animation that popped up when I was in my more standard annual hermitcraft phase. The first thing I watched of the life series was thus Grian's videos of 3rd life and double life very out of order and jumping all over the place.

Cause of that the very first thing I ever saw in relation to flower husbands was after Jimmy was already dead, and it was Scott talking about how his husband is dead after the desert war, telling Grian "see this is why I don't trust Jimmy with anything, because he's incompetent. I did warn you all." and it never really recovered from that first impression for me. It actually took me a long time to figure out it was more than a one off joke to call him his husband, cause it felt like every time I saw a scene with Scott he was just insulting Jimmy or begrudgingly putting up with him in a not very funny way. I really do not vibe with them as the flower husbands cause of that.

(That said I do adore both of them separately, and they are very entertaining as exes. Scott's just a lot more enjoyable as part of GGG and the divorcees, and I am very susceptible to the 'Jimmy bullying joke didn't quite land and I'm now just uncomfortable' low tolerance problem.)

Third is, I have actually watched an empires 1 pov now! Yay! But it was Lizzie's and there honestly isn't all that much related to them in her pov. There was actually not nearly as much related to others as I expected in general. Still loved it but didn't provide much is far as context for the season as a whole. Plus I'm unhappy with Scott's design for it and wanna redesign it. So basically I drew them from 3rd life instead.

Day 7: Group Exhibition/Tour No.

(I will be cheating for this prompt and selecting two, because only one of them is each program).

Part 1: ‘Waiting For My Real Life To Begin’ - SOI 2012 x

Something that is a common factor in both this performance and the one I am analysing for T, is how much you are drawn to them on the basis of the way they use their eyes, and how convey emotion that is truly palpable to the audience, AND that they draw you too them no matter who/how many others they skating with.

In this performance there a 4 guys- Scott, Andrew Poje, Jeremy Abbott (from the US) and Jeff Buttle who also choreographed it, and who I would say along with Scott, are the two most compelling performers in this- the ones you are drawn too for their emotion and movement (but I would say Jeff doesn’t have the posture that Scott does).

Now, it is one thing watching on a screen through edited camera shots, and watching live- obviously it is easier to read emotions the closer you are, but this only further backs up the point, where you see close up shots of Scott (and Jeff) and the others, who is emoting and who understands there are people sitting very far away and at odd angles- you have to perform to the back of the arena and to every person.. (btw I have not counted.. but there are a significant number of close ups of scott- I don’t think there is as many of the others, and the ones of scott are truly beautiful..)

So this program (pretty obviously) is about 4 young men individually pondering about their lives, each contemplating different things, but are all essentially mirrors of each other. The lights I feels symbolise their inner.. thoughts/demons/hopes and dreams making themselves known to them and they having to confront them.. the song is more optimistic then that so I don’t mean to say it’s is all sad and deep.. but they the idea is these men contemplating their lives- they are in adulthood and are wondering where they want their lives to go.

It is no secret Scott is one of the most incredible actors ever on ice (and together with T.. some of the most believable actors ever considering what they had the world convinced of) and I think it’s beautiful here to see him on his ‘own’ (not partnering T), that he can be so expressive and vulnerable without his soulmate to share that with - although no doubt he enjoys it so much more with her.

He by far more then any of the others in this dance, expresses an array of emotions so honestly and vulnerably. I love how he looks right into the light, like he lets it wash over him. He’s not being over-expressive, it’s as if he is really confronting the emotions the dance is about feeling- he is such a feeler and you so often feel that so honesty when he performs.

Here too the emotions in his eyes, his mouth, his body.

Scott has the first solo in this piece (both he and Jeff have solos). This would be so strange for both him and Tessa to dance alone.. that he has such command of the space, reaching out with his performance but feeling every internal emotion- that’s really how I would describe TS in general; the emotions and feelings they experience are very internal and intimate between them but they share those feelings through their movement & performance for the whole audience.

(All this movement below is much more beautiful to watch with the music so please go watch it after reading this). He doesn’t try to move like anyone else, he just moves the way he feels- as T says he has such an innate sense of musicality- he lets that and his emotions guide the way he moves and that’s beautiful:

This (below) is maybe my favourite moment (specifically as a close up shot) in the whole thing: they all skate seemingly in a circle then move into pairs and begin partnering.

(Getting slightly off topic here for a moment) There’s those I’ll-informed, ignorant people out there who think they (TS, some skaters in general but TS in this conversation) are fully aware of where the cameras and play to them on purpose, deliberate create a fake narrative, do things specifically for the cameras for superficial purposes (eg the hug™️) which is not only wrong but one of the most disgusting things I’ve ever heard, and I feel the same dumb argument has been made for when they skate-they know the cameras are on them specifically- that would be the last thing TS are worried about- not to mention in a case like this where it is not a live broadcast, there are multiple camera angles and editors will go in later and choose the shots for the master broadcast.. all this is to say.. he is not ‘putting on faces/emotion’ for the cameras. That ignorant thinking is a slap in the face to his profession the incredible, dedicated, once in a generation talent that Scott (and Tessa, and many skaters who work hard and love their craft) is. He is performing for himself, the men he is skating with, and for every person in that audience. He is beautiful and his artistry it to be admired:

His face here is incredible, is too his posture, hands etc.. (I love it so much I’ve gifed it twice!)

He doesn’t have ‘dead eyes’ when he skates.. this may be more commonly known as ‘deer in head lights’ but what I mean by the dead eyes bit is there is life, thoughts, emotions behind them that isn’t being suppressed by the stage lights, crowd, nerves or just lack of performance.. it’s not the same as ‘deer in head lights where you just looked stunned, Scott uses his eyes to connect with his surroundings- when it’s with Tessa its communicating with her through his eyes. I don’t want to call it out through gif form but if you go watch this video there’s a moment in the video of one of the other guys where this difference (between Scott and them) is quite clear- the difference with the life in their eyes.

I adore how as he gets closer to partnering his eyes get more intense- it’s as if he’s facing off with himself.. that’s the best way I can explain it but it’s just that moment not only with his eyes but his breath and posture and energy, I LOVE how he uses his breathe when he dances, like it’s actually part of his movement and emotion. It’s all so stunning and very emotional and I just love watching him so much. His performance is no less captivating just because he isn’t with Tessa here which goes to show he in himself is so talented and loves what he does so much but together they have something that truly sets their hearts on fire and it’s why they only ever ice danced with each other.

And finally this close up moment here:

🥺😣😭😔.. there’s moments when TS dance, they way they emote they use their whole bodies, their whole faces, their whole beings. They emote very similarly in this way. There’s moments through close up images sometimes where it looks like they are crying, or screaming- usually with their foreheads pressed to each other- and most of the time in those moments that’s not actually what they are doing, but they emoting so much and feeling each other so much, almost yearning for each other even though they are right there as close as they could possibly be. I feel that in this moment here even though he is on his own. The yearning, the way he looks up to light, feels the emotions with his whole body, it’s so beautiful.

I’ve always wanted to pour all my love out for this beautiful performance he gives (and to Jeff as well it is a stunning piece overall). I don’t think I’ve done it complete justice here with this analysis so please go watch it over and over and feel all the emotion and cry into a pillow about this beautiful vulnerable artist doing what he loves and was born to do.

18. Favorite animated show?

ouhhhhh batman brave and the bold baby. tossup between that and batman the animated series...both very tonally different batman cartoons....but batb i think was very beautful in that it introduced a lot of lesser known characters through the gateway of batman who everyone knows. i mean they had the worlds first ever and still persisting only blue and gold episode and introduced me as a kid to a lot of characters i really love today like plastic man, jaime reyes and ralph dibny....SURPRISINGLY EVEN THOUGH I HAD BATB DVDS AS A CHILD I NEVER RAN INTO ANY BOOSTER EPISODES? and hes my favorite superhero now!!!!! but i did meet the blue beetle back then and thought he was cute and fun and awesome so im #grateful for that. they gave screentime to so many characters no one gaf about like scott and barda and woozy winks and even their own jli episodes (with jaime filling in for ted who was dead.) also i love how it prioritizes fun over taking itself seriously ...batmans corny quips and jokes and the golden age designs it uses are all so fun and its a genuinely really funny show. i love it

i ask you who else is doing it like their league and the answer is nobody. nobody at all. the jli care so much about eachother and textually refer to eachother as family so much it makes me SICK. you know when the avengers movies were coming out and everyone pretended like they were this funny cute found family who all lived together and liked eachother it makes me cry bcuz thats what jli actually is just read jli hey (shaking you) just read jli. honestly though jli is such a wonderful and good example of a comic with characters written who actually like and love eachother. this is going off topic slightly but something that i always loved about jli is that the only romances in the story are between guy and tora and. well tora and bea LOL..like its insane to me through the entire series run they didnt try setting up bea and tora and booster and beetle with eachother even though they DID get fanletters like 'CAN BEA AND BOOSTER GET TOGETHER PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEASE" they were like Um. No. anyways i love the jli and i love that they love eachother theyre my favorite league family. I love this bit written about them from the spy article issue in jla

Helloo!!

I came here to firstly say that I love your artstyle, and secondly that I have a few questions. There's no ill intent on my part, and I hope this brings for a constructive discourse without misinterpretations.

Now, my question is about the nature of the characters you draw your sona with, mostly our friend Mr.TaC's OCs.

Having been part of that period of activity (although bare in mind, I don't consider myself a friend friend of the creator), I had the chance to see what everyone was up to in first person.

Of course, fangirls were present (as they always do, that's normal as long as they enjoy themselves), but in that moment the creator was also active and he could see everything (art, writings of his OC and theirs) and even if he didnt say anything at first, he could at least have taken action if things went a bit too far.

The other point being that these OCs - like Ivan - aren't really a part of a huge media, let's say, Scott Pilgrim (as it's trending), and aren't owned by some company or studios, they're literally some dudes' OCs that he put into a few OCTs and then disappeared from activity.

Now I totally understand that if something ends up being your comfort character, there's that, you can't do much about it, but what I'm saying is that the idea of selfshipping (plus gore and everything) with another person's character, who is not active and therefore not really consenting (theres people who claim that the sole action of putting one's OC out there in the world is already consent but...come on), always striked me as something strange to do, that calls for a calm and constructive discussion.

I think this is true for a lot of other people too but I am NOT here to scream and go off saying weird things like LOOK LOOK!! THIS PERSON IS DOING WEIRD THINGS TO ANOTHER OC!!! BAD!!!!!!, absolutely not, in fact I quite understand you and actually like your characters too, and I'm aware it can be a tricky topic.

AH it’s rLLY NO ISSUE!!!! I can see the big concern you have! To be faie im rather extremely shy and shameful about most things i draw! The gore n other things or really weird but self indulge n i kinda kinda like thinkin em as aus but again!! I really dont wanna cause harm to anyone at all! ESPECIALLY his creator!

I actually have commissioned artists who knew ivans creator personally! And i feel as if it was rlly awful they would have told me i shouldn’t comm that!
