*laying facedown on the ground* how is it going to be 30 minutes. it can’t just be 30 minutes can it (🤡)??? because, from what all we’ve seen in bts vids and the like, we have to fit (ofmd finale spoilers beneath cut)—
- Ed fishing and coming to the realization that Stede/the crew are in danger, and doing whatever he has to do in order to get back (fishing up his leathers, emerging from the ocean, etc etc)
- The crew getting captured, or maybe just something with them jailed already
- The crew devising some kind of fuckery where they dress up as naval officers
- Whatever sort of hijinks goes down in the forest where some of the crew are battling/tripping up (literally) the actual naval officers
- The actual beach battle sequence itself where Ed and Stede are both fighting through it
- The both of them reuniting and having some kind of romantic moment (I would really like them to aPOLOGIZE TO EACH OTHER BUT Y’KNOW SKDJWJD)
- Ed and Stede teaming up with Zheng and Auntie
- Some sort of sequence where Ed appears to be dressed in some sort of extravagant white outfit and also appears to have been stabbed (or is otherwise in contact with a lot of blood. please see also: that one bloody hand shot)
- Some sort of VERY suspicious looking sequence where the crew seems to be near a makeshift grave of some sort. So if someone dies, we’ll need time to sit with that/allow that moment to breathe (but also I can’t see how because everyone has died numerous times and quite literally just Can’t Be Killed DKWKD)
- That other sequence where the crew is all inside and Ed and Stede have the “it’s a suicide mission/only if we die” exchange. Which…I can’t tell where that is in the timeline?? Because I would assume Ed and Stede dramatically reunite on the beach but maybe not depending on time?????
- Some sort of scene where the crew all seem to be running towards a dinghy/trying to get away from danger
- Some sort of scene where Ed and Stede are looking at that one little house that has appeared in the background of a few shots and more than likely having some sort of discussion about their future/their relationship

And another thing! Literally any queer story that takes place during the colonial age would have a huge gaping hole in it if it didn't have anticolonialism as a theme. Especially one that centers indigenous people. Like the reason that every culture had their own concepts of gender until something happened and then suddenly the gender binary was ubiquitous is because western European colonial powers made their view of gender the only acceptable one as part of christianizing and colonizing the world. You're not gonna have a show set in 1717 in the Caribbean where the love interest is a gay Maori man and the main deuteragonist is a non-binary mestizo catholic and just skip over colonialism. Like these are exactly the people who western gender roles are being forced on at fucking gun point during this era. Jim and Ed are both mixed race characters who's gender and sexual identities are in active defiance of the colonial powers that be. And this is the fucking Stede Ed and Jim show.
And there's something to be said for the fact that Stede's toxic masculinity plot line is internalized and Ed's struggle with toxic masculinity is largely external in the form a white guy who rubs elbows with the British Navy when Ed doesn't behave to his standard of masculinity. That choice didn't come out of nowhere and it shows a deep understanding of where homophobia comes from. That's not to say that precolonial communities of color were paradise for people that we today would consider queer but the rich tapestry of sexual and gender expressions that existed in those communities were erased in the name of colonialism. That's going to affect literally any queer person at the time when OFMD is set. These two things are inextricably linked.
Like when David Jenkins says a lot of what we're taught about being men is wrong, motherfucker who taught us what a man was. Who taught Ed what a man was? Who taught Stede what a man was for that matter? It's the white dad with the English accent who is violent (derogatory) and overbearing.
Like you get what I'm saying right? Like it's a silly little rom com but also it must necessarily be that deep because of who these characters are and when and where they exist.

ofmd s2e5 spoilers!!
i love how they kissed again in episode 5 and in the YOU WEAR FINE THINGS WELL SCENE because i've rewatched season 1 episode 5 religiously and you can see that blackbeard steps forward about to kiss stede but stede is too dumb to realise or he's too scared to reciprocate and then ed takes the universal awkward rejection step back but then in season 2 episode 5... ed steps forward and is met half way.

love love love love love the genre shift of "I am the kraken" era ed, specifically the darkness in his eyes when he pushes lucius overboard. and I just managed to put my finger on exactly why I like it so much, why it hurts so bad.
because, like with all legends or myths or rules or whatever, it only works if you have some kind of proof. you can only believe it for so long before you start to question, right? if there's nothing to back up the ruse, it falls apart. and we, the audience, are beginning to see blackbeard for what he really is, a ruse. a figment. a ghost, like ed says.
and it's obvious the people that know of him, izzy, jack, the pirate community at large, know enough of what they consider to be proof to be convinced. if it was just the flag and the image and the smoke with no actual consequences, they wouldn't be scared.
but, to this point in the show, we haven't seen blackbeard at all. he was peeking out when he planned to steal stede's identity, he meandered around when ed wanted to shoot up the french boat. he pops in to threaten that old man while they're treasure hunting. he says "I will still stab you in the face" to lucius. he makes like he's gonna shoot stede but, as many people have pointed out, we know the gun's not loaded. we hear these preposterous stories "he'd stick hot pokers up their assholes" "the blackie I knew would've snapped your neck for calling him that" but there's nothing tangible.
so, from an outsider's perspective, and presumably to stede's perspective, there's no proof. we're seeing through the facade, we can poke holes in the image, we believe ed wouldn't really hurt anyone. he's never killed directly since his father, he said so himself. he's harmless, really. and then. he turns on a dime.
suddenly we're looking up at him again, fearsome and powerful, his eyes are shaded by his set brow, he's got a darkness in his features that's bone-chilling. he shoves lucius overboard without hesitation. he goes inside and cuts izzy's toe off and feeds it to him. within minutes. we get absolutely no time to process that our suspicions have just been denied absolutely. we were lured into a sense of security only to have the proof dropped right at our feet. you thought the whole blackbeard thing was gone? think again. here he is. kneel and pray. yknow>!?!??!

So....
I'd also love to know how heavily lean into the 'theory' side of fandom as shows come out.
