Have you ever made a recommendation list of general positive “feel-good” kinds of media? I think the world could always use much more of those vibes!

For this list however, I'm not going to recommend media that I would call life affirming or optimistic or uplifting, because although those are my favourite, media in this vein tend to depict some of the more darker aspects of being alive and extremely negative experiences, because how can you be life affirming and optimistic if you AVOID that which you are trying to rise above?

But for this list I'm going to recommend things which don't go too dark and which you can comfort watch without putting yourself through some kind of spiritual growth or anything like that XD because sometimes we want to watch Utena break the cycle of abuse and oppression and sometimes we just want to chill with something sparkly and pink.

SO! in no particular order;

1: Winx Club

I watched the first season as a 13 year old or so and I wasn't really into it. I was just at that age where I was starting to explore more serious media and stories with darker tones. However I've very recently started re-watching it since all 8 seasons are up for free on youtube by its own official youtube channel.

Winx Club is an Italian cartoon, starting in 2004. Although technically a Magical Girl show, I would describe it more like a hybrid of Sailor Moon and Harry Potter. You follow a human girl from Earth called Bloom who discovers she has magic powers and may actually be a Fairy. She is accepted into a school for Fairies (kind of like Hogwarts but without the traditional houses like British Boarding schools have). She attends classes with her 4 new friends (later 5 in the 2nd season) and learns about the magical world (which is a mix of magic and sci fi) while also learning about her heritage and trying to beat the witches from the evil boarding school just for Witchcraft XD.

The first season so far is a nice relaxing watch with characters who are very sweet. I hear it gets more dramatic as the seasons go on, but the first season I guess I would compare to the first Harry Potter book in terms of tone. Except aimed at preteen girls in the eary 2000s

2: Nyanners

Nyanners is a Vtuber and probably the one I watch the most. I don't really like vtubers who are completely UwU and soft and PG and have absolutely no substance to them. So I like Nyanners because her voice may sound like Yuna from FFX but she says the most outrageous shit. Also it's just REALLY FUNNY to watch a pink anime cat girl with an UwU voice yelling at a video game to go fuck itself.

She's just really funny, REALLY good at improv, knows how to be hilarious and spin a situation to be entertaining, and she's just... a really good entertainer.

She's on this list because even though she has streams that devolve into utter chaos (like her VR adventures) she also has streams where she's just relaxing and chatting either with the chat or one of her fellow VTuber friends. So if you want something really funny to watch and you like pink and you just kind of want to unwind, I'm gonna link her VOD channel which has her full streams archived. I don't watch her live because her chat is usually about 8k people at once and it's too stressful for me XD but her archived streams you can just sit and watch or play as background noise while doing something else.

3: Genshin Impact (yes. Really. Just hear me out)

FIRST. Genshin is a free to play Gacha game that wants you to spend money on its gambling mechanics. If you are someone who is susceptible to addictive gambling or who struggles with monetization in games, please do not play Genshin. Also, if this affects your decision in any way, Genshin is a Chinese developed game. I don't believe Tencent is involved (yet) and it's not something any government officials are involved with, its developer is merely based in China. However if this makes you uncomfortable, it's something you should know?

Ok. So, Genshin is basically a very long-running 100+ episode Isekai anime but in video game form where you're the main character. It plays a bit like Breath of the Wild, with the open world crammed full of chests and collectables, and materials to turn into items, to secrets that unlocks chests etc etc etc. The gameplay is satisfying but not particularly challenging, the environments are all beautiful with soothing music, the writing is generally very soft with really cute character designs and story-driven quests whether main story related or just side quests.

The game will try and push you into logging in once a day to get daily rewards, and it will gentle suggest you spend money to gamble for a random character, but if you're someone unaffected by these sort of things, it's not that intrusive and easy to ignore. And if you think of it as a single-player MMO or, as I said, a never-ending Isekai anime that just keeps going and going forever with new areas/quests/characters released every few months, it's genuinely an incredibly relaxing game to just unwind and chill. Even if you're just doing your 15 minutes daily quest.

It's also free. It's on basically every single fucking gaming platform including for your phone but I think if you tried playing it on your phone it would just melt. I had it on my laptop first but deleted it for the hard drive space and downloaded it for my PS4 instead.

4: Lucky Star

speaking of anime;

Lucky Star is an anime about nothing. It's based on a 4 panel gag manga strip where our 4 main characters and their friends are in various every day situations and just like.... talk. That's it XD the first 2 episodes are a little slow and not very interesting to watch, but the series switched directors after the 2nd episode and it becomes very enjoyable. It's similar to Azumanga Daioh, but whereas Azumanga has episodic stories and small events that carry through story wise, Lucky Star is just a bunch of disconnected events and situations that the girls react to. One episode they might be at Comiket, but generally they're just in high school and in one scene discussing what kind of animals they'd be, and then later talking about whatever new anime Konata is watching (the others don't really watch anime), or just like... doing high school stuff. Struggling with studying, going to the beach for a day, dealing the dentist etc etc.

Nothing seriously upsetting or bad happens in the entire show. It's just a light-hearted comedy that I find hilarious.

5: Zaypixel

Even if you don't have or don't play Minecraft, I'd still recommend watching Zaypixel. There are a lot of "how to" Minecraft channels on youtube... like... a LOT. But Zaypixel is different because none of the videos are narrated, the buildings are built in survival mode so no disorientating flying around, and its shown from a 3rd person perspective so no motion sickness. Plus Zaypixel is just good at picking music and visuals to make for some really calming videos, just quietly watching someone make a nice house in minecraft.

6: Music compilations

There are a myriad of channels and videos on youtube solely devoted to making hour-long compilations of music to fit any mood or ambience you might be looking for. For some feel good music I literally recommend looking up "feel-good music compilation". There's some great stuff out there. From relaxing JRPG mixes to indie Japanese music to cute anime songs.

7: 李子柒 Liziqi

You probably already know Liziqi's youtube channel but I'm gonna recommend her in case you don't.

Liziqi is a lady who lives in rural China with her grandparents. After an extremely rough period in her life up to and including homelessness for a while, she started her youtube channel where she merely makes video content of her life on her grandparent's farm.

Her videos include things like the traditional Chinese method of making and dyeing wool for a blanket, harvesting wild foods with which she then makes supper for her and her grandmother, or all the ways in which she uses wheat in her home.

Her content stands out due to the high quality of her filming and how she directs her shots and marries them to music, making it feel like a higher quality product than a vlogging channel would

Next I'm gonna recommend some things I haven't checked out yet myself but which are pretty high on my "to watch" list.

8: Yuru Camp

You probably know this one already. An anime revolving entirely around camping. It follows a group of cute anime girls, all of which have different personalities who enjoy going out and camping. The show is both a slice of life about camping, as well as exploring the relationships between these girls, and also provides tips and instructions on if you'd like to go camping yourself. On top of this, the areas shown in the anime of where the girls go camping are all real places in rural Japan that can be camped at yourself. I've been dying to get to this show, I've just been distracted by other things lately.

9: The Atelier series

Another game series I've been meaning to look into one day when I have the money for it.

I've spoken about these before, but the Atelier games are about you playing as a character (usually a girl) who is starting an Alchemy business. The game focuses around fulfilling orders, usually within a generous time-limit (although there are certain games in the series without time-limits) and gathering ingredients in the wild areas. Either by gathering them like herbs and mushrooms, or by battling creatures in JRPG style fights for drops. You slowly work towards bettering your alchemy shop while following the main plot of the game and meeting a variety of characters who become your friends along the journey.

The games are designed to be positive and uplifting, with lower budget but well designed visuals, cute anime characters, and a leisurely pace.

And then lastly

10: 도기코기 Doggie Corgi

Doggie Corgi is a channel of videos of relaxing music set to looping animations of dogs in various locations. I don't mean a gif loop, I mean long stretches of animation that eventually loop themselves.

Power Play - Re-Review #41

Woah, I honestly didn’t expect to get this far! I know I haven’t been able to reply to everyone individually last week, but I’ve read every piece of feedback/comments that came my way. Seriously, thank you all so much for supporting this series, because else the Re-Review’s would have died out long ago! Anyhow, here we go;

Attack of the giants! It’s like someone’s found and used a growth serum- oh no, we have to wait another two episode for that!

Honestly though the behind the scenes features for this episode did look pretty awesome.

But the actual episode is what we will now discuss.

Oh, lookie here, a problem! Send in the Thunderbirds (like with most episodes)!

“What’s going on down there?”

“I’m not the one in charge of the floodgates! You tell me.”

And what a response that was. Almost typical really.

“You’re going to have to close the floodgates manually.”

“Wait, something’s here. What is that thing? We need help!”

“This is International Rescue. Help is on the way.”

So we’ve got a dam that’s on the way down and some strange presence within it... interesting.

I can’t keep up with Brains and type so basically, it’s one of the largest dams in the world and it’s cracking!

“This will need all of us.”

I’m sorry to say it though, but did Scott wobble in his launch sequence? Seriously I’m hyper aware of it at the moment for some reason. I blame @tsarinatorment​ - stop putting ideas in my head! (I’m only kidding, please don’t stop). But I think you’ll find there was a wobble there.

Playing skipping rocks with Thunderbird Four? Seriously boys, hold off on the Gordon cruelty! After all, that’s the job of us fanfiction writers.

Interestingly, Alan was playing skipping rocks in the 2004 ‘Thunderbirds’ movie.

“I just have one question. If you drop me off, how are you going to get the pods out?”

“Glad you mentioned it. Better hold onto something.”

“Ok, that was awesome, but a little more warning next time.”

“It was Alan’s idea. Sorry Gordo!”

Nicknames are back! And that little bit of music accompanying it was perfect! One of my favourite moments for sure!

At least Gordon was planning on going for a swim, unlike Scott here.

“What’s the next fastest way inside?”

“You’re looking for the auxiliary entrance to number six.”

“I wasn’t planning on going for a swim, John.”

“My scan say it should be dry.”

The should gave it away for me.

“I wouldn’t want to be in here when someone turns on the tap.”

That for me was Scott really pushing his luck.

“Ur... guys, I think I’m about to take that swim after all.”

Well, you did push your luck.

“Something inside that turbine room is taking all the power!”

And who else could that be, but this guy.

“This means The Mechanic is here.”

And um, he’s still got that hacked link into their systems from ‘Up from the Depths’. Seriously, I thought Kayo was on that? Do a better job the second time around please?

“We need the GDF here and fast.”

“They’re arriving now.”

“You gone up against this Mechanic guy before, Captain? I hear he makes The Hood look soft.”

“The Mechanic will get what’s coming to him.”

Yes, I’m sure he will. Especially with the return of Captain Foster... Did anyone else worry at seeing her face?

“We’ve got nothing to fight these things with.”

“Speak for yourselves.”

Did anyone else feel the suspicion in that as well? I know ‘she’s’ a Captain, but the GDF wouldn’t only arm one person if they had the weaponry to fight The Mechanic. At least, my logic tells me they wouldn’t.

“I’m not waiting any longer. I need to get these people out of here.”

“Thanks. Scott Tracy, International Rescue.”

“Captain Foster. I got you covered, Tracy.”

Good deeds! Captain Foster helping with a rescue. That would’t normally be a new thing for the GDF.

“Looks like the GDF got some upgrades!”

Yeah, one person, Scott, and really did that not set alarm bells off? Who (other than Brains) is the only person we know capable of fighting The Mechanic? And um... who was wearing Captain Foster’s face the last time we saw him? I mean, there was of course every chance the real Captain Foster could have showed up and forced him to chance faces, but I think The Hood is more practical a thinker than that.

“No matter. I got what I came for.”

And that fact really does set off alarm bells. What does The Mechanic want super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super-super... imagine the rest- super-charged batteries for?

“So did I. We’re leaving!”

“I’ll take care of The Mechanic.”

“It’s not worth it. You don’t have to be a hero.”

“I’ll leave the hero business to you, Scott Tracy. My business is a very different kind. Unfinished.”

“The Hood!”

But, oh no, green is so not his colour!

It’s like Battle of the Bad Guys - I imagine that is actually much better than battle of the bands too...

And maybe a little bit like an episode of Eastenders..? I’ve honestly never watched it, but I’ve seen trailers in between other programs, and this first part of dialogue just seems like the sort of conversation that might appear in an episode. Let me know if you have seen it. 

“You’ve been mascaraing as a GDF officer all this time just to find me?”

“I consider it a public service. Though I admit I expected more of a challenge when I did.”

“Now that I know what I’m dealing with I’ll make it one!”

After their ‘break up’ at the mid-point of Series Two, I suppose a scene like this was inevitable. The big thing is, however, we still don’t know entirely what set these two against each other. Okay, The Hood’s horrible insults might make it onto that list, and obviously we know there’s some kind of influence/control going on with that golden eye of his (nice little nod to TOS there, even though they’ve taken all the magic and wonder out of it by replacing it with ‘cybernetics’). Big reveals are on the way though!

“Sorry pal, but I don’t want to stick around for the light show if you know what I mean.”

“Brains, I need you to keep an eye on things here.”

“R.A.D.”

And here’s the big reveal I mentioned;

“You should have left well enough alone.”

“I never forgive and I never forget. But I have to give you credit, whatever you have planned has made me quite curious.”

“You haven’t figured it out yet? It was your idea.”

“Project Sentinel?”

“Sentinel?”

Sentinel you say, Brains? Sentinel was the original name of the US Navy ship which shot down Thunderbird Two in the TOS episode ‘Terror in New York City’.

“You must be joking. I decided that was far too extreme. Even for me!”

The Hood thinks something is too extreme for him to use even though he originally planned..? Interesting.

You see - this debate will be fully taken up in that other post I keep talking about, which will appear eventually - this is where my issues with The Hood’s ultimate ending in TAG come around. There’s a great bit of writing here, with two feuding bad guys, which I’m still completely believing. I can’t quite remember what I felt the first time I watched this episode, but having seen the final and knowing how The Hood’s big career speech turns out, this loses all potential power for me. Someone who was just out for revenge and always seemed to never have a conscience compared with the great Jeff Tracy doesn’t seem like the sort of guy who would say this.

Also, with the great revelations we get on The Mechanic, his reply also seems out of place to me now. Okay, we could claim it’s because The Hood’s control over him is driving him mad, but even so, the fact is that they’ve shown The Mechanic to be able to think of his own accord still and he’s had other opportunities to get The Hood which wouldn’t have involved endangering the planet. I don’t know, it just seems to me like someone crossed their wires when writing these characters, or just forgot to re-watch Series 2 before writing series 3..?

“I, on the other hand, have no such reservations. It would have been building it for you after all. Now there’s nothing to stop me picking up from where we left off.”

“Except for me!”

“He’s fighting The Hood in there, remember?”

“As if this day couldn’t get even more interesting.”

Yes, so let’s take a look at the rescue effort for the dam in detail;

“Virgil, are you sure you don’t want me to take the pod?”

“Not this time.”

Wait, Virgil’s willingly handing over Thunderbird Two? Get the record books out. And all because he wanted to inspect the damn personally... He really is a structural expert.

“It’s pulling me off the dam!”

“Bulls-eye!”

“Nice going, Alan.”

So Alan gets Scott’s aim as well? Seems a little unfair.

“It seems to be working. I just hope I don’t run out.”

We went a couple episodes without jinxing things, and so now we’re back at jinx central.

Meanwhile whilst Gordon is fighting mechas underwater whilst trying to attach cables to the damn, Virgil is sitting pretty here... until... down they both go!

“Fancy meeting you here.”

I think that’s pay back for the dropped landing earlier.

“Alan I sure hope you’re in position. Things are about to get wet!”

I’m guessing this wasn’t the ultimate end game plan though... You okay chilling down there?

“I’m ok. I think.”

Okay, we’ll just leave you there for a minute then, so that the battle of the bad guys scene can happen.

P.S. Look at poor little beached Thunderbird Four.

In fairness though, probably neither was this;

“This stuff washes off right?”

The fact that Gordon has asked that immediately gave me the answer.

No.

“Um, no, that’s the point.”

“Oh, ok, just checking.”

“You didn’t get any on Thunderbird Four, did you?”

“Let’s focus on the positives!”

Which means: yes.

“We can’t let him or The Mechanic leave with those power cells!”

“Seal off the area. Nothing gets in or out of here!”

And bye-bye goes The Mechanic.

 Another job well done by the GDF!

Scott’s face as The Mechanic’s ship vanishes.

“Now if you’ll excuse me, I need to help Alan.”

“Why? What’s wrong with Alan?”

“Oh nothing.”

This Kayo and Scott exchange reminded me a little of conversations in TOS episodes ‘End of the Road’ and ‘Attack of the Alligators’ - you know where the big brother’s are doing the thing of wondering about the younger brother’s dating prospects.

And just a question, do we think that guy in the green shirt who came out to go fishing at the start of the episode has just been sat there watching the whole time? Because I do. Trainspotting? How about IR spotting?

So, humour aside, let’s explain what Project Sentinel is;

“What is it? Some kind of engine?”

“It’s a laser. The most powerful one I have ever seen. In the wrong hands it could be dangerous.”

This is a great episode, don’t mistake me on that. It’s got a nice rescue, balanced out with some smashing moments and a bit of bad guy brawling... but somehow, even though this episode is lighter, it’s not all fun and games. It’s a filler really, but it doesn’t portray itself in the typical way we usually see episodes of that type done. It pushes the plot forward just enough without giving away everything and ties up the remaining lose ends from ‘Escape Proof’. The comedy hits and it’s definitely less tense than some of those before it, but it’s still ultimately setting up some serious events to come and that always makes me a little worried.

strawberry shortcake s2 ep1 - horse of a different color

this one was suggested by someone who couldnt keep their mouth shut and not sing the strawberry shortcake intro theme in the middle of our economy class

no one wanted to hear that, but they  went ahead and then i actually followed up on that train of thoughts i remembered about the fucking cartoons and i knew it pronto: its a must-see shit its like slightly above the level of magical school bus series, but the final rating is for the fin not the beginning so lets begin this horseshit:

were reviewing “horse of a different color”, it focuses indeed on strawberrys horse, honey pie pony (its her entire damn name, how sweet right? like all of them, i got diabete from this review but its the cost of maintaining this blog anyway, the kids are playing together on a that tree having fun jumping around like chimpanzees hooba hooba but sadly our filly quickly realizes she cant play king kong with them and keep falling on her ass,

yet since theyre all retarded or young (id say its a fifty-fifty case for them kinda normal ig, i mean they ARE literal 6yo) they try several ways of getting her up on that tree, not thinking how to get her down if they ever were to succeed (good for them: aint happening) its child labor too btw, from an horse still same deal what if honey pie fell down on them? crushing them corpses with her mighty pounds? the findus company would be delighted to hear such news, im sure its some quality (sweet ass) horse meat

once it all fails she understands a horse isnt meant to climb a tree, too big too fat its four legged, not even entertaining the relationship giraffes have with trees

but it aint over, then (after a talk with herself) hp hears the laughters of a bunch of kids which catches her attention, it always does who can ignore that sorta noise? although she aint annoyed by it shes just into the idea of riding a bike now, shes even gonna get a go at it oh yea thats it we finally found her human hobby gogdamn shes a backward furry

of course it fails aswell since she has no hand for the handle and shes heavy so i guess its the reason why she rides into w/e and cant stop? because otherwise she couldve also just.. actually it makes no sense does it? i mean she couldve easily stopped the ride actually how is that kid bike even holding her? ive never tried putting a pony on a bike for 6 y/o but i doubt about its capacity in not being crushed aswell as i doubt in the kids bones not being severely damaged after a visit under honey pies horsy buttcheeks

but all of that really makes her sad: she cant play with her human friends and shes the only horse around strawberry land or whatever see me tearing it for her, theres so much emotions in this episode especially after that filly trynna get kids to get into some horseplay horseshit like dude theyre only 6, lets go easy on them, might have a problem with the parents of the kids watching this episode no one even thought how fucked up this one part is? sure horseplay isnt only sexual or w/e but it still is the visual of 6yos on all four jumping around and neighing together with their ass a little bit too exposed wow im going on a dangerous road here? aint i? not gonna sue the writers im sure it was their subconscious speaking probably got issues from their childhood, eventually got them sorted out since 2004 what do i know? aside from me not caring

back on track : after seeing horsey being so sad the kiddos decide to get her a horse friend but where the fuck? they got no idea, they are proud nonetheless and go tell honey the good new until they are like “wait but we have no idea where to find horses!” ofc we get a big reveal, some serious strawberry shortcake lore: actually all the horses, ALL OF THEM FROM THE ENTIRE FUCKING PLANET are on one (1) single island: ice cream themed to diversify it all they are just chilling over there in ponyland and for some reason this one here got lost or idk guys she took the boat and checked the rest of the world out as an even younger filly, found strawberry and her friends and decided now she was a centaur  slash humanrry furry human, idk you get it but shes their friend and so on to introduce the concept of an AWESOME island full of equestrian activity and ofc ice cream but its kinda lame because who cares? everythings already made out of food, also why isnt the ice cream melting? its one water? nevermind for the introduction as i was saying, hp sings an horrendous sounding song it deteriorated my ear drums they got pierced or something  or maybe im exagerrating? either case horses cant sing:

so to the ice cream land they go, huh

of course it wouldnt be a big adventure without an almost broken bridge oh no whatever shall we do? could we possibly cross it safely? lets try it out  guys: yay it worked good for us little stress and suspense it was wack how they got honey pie out of the hole her big ass hoove made im mesmerized by the power of friendship and sugar at this point, just in full awe for the rest of the episode probably over dosed on all the ice cream flavoured horseshit, i got some all over my mouth its dripping on my desk i gotta clean that later

next thing we know: horses its all this episode is about (aside from labor) but you see, so far hp would switch between normal human language and neighing well turns out her other fellow equines can only neigh and so they just neigh together while our english well-spoken mammal translates to the moronic kids who just smile smuggly

of course the animals are having a welcome party then, dancing around while the morons are just bored, harsh one being a cartoon character isnt it guys? w/e theyre gonna ask for honey pie to come back home now, convinced that her natural habit isnt her place and she loves them too much to just leave them and never come back and break any plans they ever had together- oh shit looks like shes leaving forever huh? what a plot twist mark that on the bitch quota for today

the first one to leave is the little boy btw, important thing to note: hes the biggest pussy he cant even face reality: oh no, no more pony back time before sleep thats quite a bummer, downer and man how are they going to survive now they got no animal to watch over them? jesus theyre soon, on the boat (idk where they got it from idk why suddenly theyre on a boat because then theyre once again gonna cross that bridge but ok) anyway yea theyre having a relationship crisis during that ship trip yada yada ah and the bridge, because (see i do not call them morons for now reasons obviously they deserve this title not only because theyre 6 but also because they are just daft:) they proceed, once in the middle of the bridge all 4 of them, to stop and wonder

“will the bridge be able to hold all of us? wont it break? damn i wonder if it will crack” and they talks without moving until vlam: a tree comes and breaks it (dont ask) so now theyre in trouble:

surprisingly enough, i only wanted to stop watching half of the episode and not the entirity of it so credits for thats since im an adult and not a kid, imagining kids enjoyed this sweet childish cartooness or w/e now why +1? its because of how many political questions it raised, how it made me think about our society and cakes yknow its more than kids having a conflict with an horse it talks about veganism, specism, handicap, cannibalism, the management of the limited ressources were exploiting and so on yea really makes you think, its subliminal messages to make kids smarter: they watch their dessert-imbecile counterparts doing bs and then get it right irl: good  ah- it also makes it better for you when youre watching this with your kid, you suddenly transcend to another level of spirituality, existential crisis activated or at least reasoning mode or w/e youre willing to name this the point is you arent bored still despite all of this i rated it quite low for such a serious kid cartoon what couldve possibly made me tic? 1) kids are morons and cant understand all of this, not clear enough for the targeted public 2) projection onto the characters/dialogues from the writers of their childhood traumas (the horse play event didnt go unnoticed, karren brown) 3) my little pony ripoff 4) its controversial, our society, especially in 2004 couldnt understand the depth of this shit and finally 5) i got so much ice cream flavoured horseshit all over my desk god help me this is so filthy what a fucking mess i would totally recommand it to anyone who feels like being blown away by the statements made in this work of art 6/10 but really we all know in the future, itll be a 9/10, some ahead-of-its-time-crap

Top 10 Personal Favorite Hit Songs from 1999

A list with quite possibly the most embarrassing #1 yet, and considering some of the previous ones, that’s really saying something.

Also, a very, very long list of honorable mentions.

Disclaimers:

Keep in mind I’m using both the year-end top 100 lists from the US and from France while making these top 10 things. There’s songs in English that charted in my country way higher than they did in their home countries, or even earlier or later, so that might get surprising at times.

Of course there will be stuff in French. We suck. I know. It’s my list. Deal with it.

My musical tastes have always been terrible and I’m not a critic, just a listener and an idiot.

I have sound to color synesthesia which justifies nothing but might explain why I have trouble describing some songs in other terms than visual ones.

This could have almost been a top fifteen, because holy f█cking shit look at this list of honorable mentions. I might eventually make a top 15 for some years (gosh I just finished my 2013 top and it’s a massacre of good songs, an absolute disaster, and I’m seriously considering making it a top 15 or 20 I swear), but for now, it’s still manageable.

Summer Son (Texas) - Why is this so hot. The lyrics aren’t even hot in the first place. What the hell.

That Don’t Impress Me Much (Shania Twain) - Not my favorite song from her but still very good. Fun fact, one of my English teachers was using songs as dictation exercises and that was the hardest one he ever used for that. I don’t think any of us got the Elvis line right. Also he’s solely responsible for me loving The Cure because the second song he used for this kind of exercise was Boys Don’t Cry. This has nothing to do with Shania Twain but I thought it was a fun little story to tell.

Jusqu’au Bout de la Nuit (Emile et Images) - Two French bands from the eighties team up and release a song which is composed of every single one of their hit songs from the eighties, with each chorus sung one after the other, and... it sounds great? And it charted?? My brother absolutely loved them, too. The only reason it’s not on the list is that it feels like cheating, in a way. I mean, half these songs could top some of my lists on their own. Putting them together is a dirty trick, guys! Oh well, I love you all anyway.

Baby One More Time (Britney Spears) - I really love this song and it was on the list at first, but overplay played a big role in its removal from it.

L’Ame Stram Gram (Mylène Farmer) - Has the privilege of being the first Mylène Farmer music video I ever saw in my life. Was incredibly confused but also fascinated. The song isn’t her best though, and she’s on so many of these lists that I claim self care on its removal from this one, especially because, uh... she’s still gonna appear on it anyway. Damn it.

Move Your Body (Eiffel 65) - I told you I loved stupid dance music didn’t I. Unfortunately things aren’t gonna get better as years pass. I just made a list (which is gonna be posted muuuuuuch later) where I put David Guetta six places higher than Adele. This isn’t a joke.

Save Tonight (Eagle Eye Cherry) - I genuinely love this song and it’s kinda sad I couldn’t fit it on any of the two lists where it was elligible.

La Manivelle (Wazoo) - This would NEVER have charted if La Tribu de Dana by Manau hadn’t been such an enormous hit the previous year. Not in a million years. And if it hadn’t, the world would have been a little less fun. So I’m glad. I love it and it was one of the last cuts from this list.

Kiss Me (Sixpence None the Richer) - Was also on the list at first. Was removed because it never ended on any compilation I made and that’s the only reason.

10 - Crazy (Britney Spears)

US: Not on the list?? I was very surprised / FR: #14

So I dug up the first cd compilations I ever made for the previous list, and look what’s the first song on the third compilation I ever made!

Relistened to it, still love it to bits, put it on the list. Sorry Kiss Me.

9 - All Star (Smash Mouth)

US: #17 / FR: Not on the list

I know it’s impossible to listen to it with fresh ears after something like 15 years of memes. But it’s still damn good and a ton of fun to sing along with it.

8 - Ma Baker 99 (Boney M)

US: Not on the list / FR: #66

Where’s that photo of the cd compilation I mentioned in the previous list?

There it is.

Yep, it’s a remix, but it charted here, and it sounds and looks absolutely fantastic. I had never heard the original at the time for some reason, and that song sounded so badass. I could only understand isolated bits of the lyrics (like “she was the meanest cat in all Chicago town”, “the cops appeared too soon they couldn’t get away”, “she never could cry”) but it was enough to get a general idea, and that was back when I was starting to realise than most of the dance songs I enjoyed as a kid didn’t tell stories and weren’t about wizards and magic. So, a song about a mean woman who’s also a gangster?? I was like, wow, nice, a song I like with an actual story, give me twenty.

7 - Boom Boom Boom Boom (Vengaboys)

US: Not on the list / FR: #20

Told you I loved Vengaboys! It’s also on that third cd compilation I ever made!

Fun fact, at the time, for a while I didn’t know what the lyrics were and since I only knew a couple of words of English I was convinced a “broom” was somehow involved in the lyrics instead of a “room”.

6 - Souviens-toi du jour (Mylène Farmer)

US: Not on the list / FR: #73

I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again ; I used to be a huge fan of her as a teenager and my brain somehow links her and her songs in general to some dark times in my life - and so, every single time she appears on one of my lists, I feel like I’m texting an unstable ex and that things will end horribly and I probably shouldn’t do that but, ugh, can’t help it, love her too much.

Ok so the first seconds are actually painful to listen to but holy shit, that’s a beautiful, beautiful song. When the chorus swells near the end, so full of hope and light? Amazing. Chills on my arms every single time. That’s from one of her best albums, too. I have nothing more to say about it.

5 - Better Off Alone (Alice Deejay)

US: Not on the list / FR: #30

I don’t have anything to say about this one apart from the fact one of my friends around 2005 thought the lyrics were “do you think you’re better? rofl lol” and I think that’s hilarious.

Moving on to- oh shit oh no not that song

4 - Je te rends ton amour (Mylène Farmer)

US: Not on the list / FR: #97

What I said in #6 also applies here and this song is so dark it feels even worse. That song used to be very important in my life. Bad memories, bad times. Really, really bad times.

So. Uh. This is a song about a woman in a painting, who’s despising her creator, and possibly (that’s very, very open to interpretation, here’s a translation) coming out of her frame to kill him. That’s quite possibly the weirdest story I’ve ever heard in a song, and I love it. And it sounds so sinister. God, the first notes. They are so ominous. And that brief moment of silence after the bridge, right before the guitar explodes again? Horrible chills. I’m not sure who killed who or what actually happened in the story but press F to pay respects.

Also the music video has nothing to do with the lyrics and it’s absolutely terrifying and I shouldn’t have watched this at 14 because it’s kinda burned into my mind now and it will never go away and you probably shouldn’t watch it either.

If it wasn’t so inextricably linked to bad memories, this song would be #2. I still love it and listen to it but I kinda jump like a scared rabbit whenever I hear it by surprise and it should come with its own trigger warning as far as I’m concerned.

3 - Narcotic (Liquido)

US: Not on the list / FR: #99

This is barely elligible. But I’m so, so glad it is. These chords right there? Love them. Love. Them.

Also here’s a fun story about this song and me. At first, I was like “oh wow, I can only understand one word out of five, but this sounds badass.” Then a couple of years later I was like “oh. Oh no. It’s about drugs.” And THEN a few years later I was like “oh shit oh no. It’s about sex.” But no, now that I can understand everything, it’s just a breakup song. It’s okay.

2 - Where I’m headed (Lene Marlin)

US: Not on the list / FR: #24

Ok so. Uh. I just realised this song was called Where I’m headed and not, as I believed for literally 18 years, “Pass By”. I had never checked. I have it on several tapes and several cd compilations, always labelled Pass By. It’s also called Pass By on the mp3 I still have in my playlist. I know I’m in the wrong here and probably never checked what the title was but I still feel like there’s been a glitch in the matrix. What happened.

Anyway. Fantastic song. Love it.

Now let’s embarrass myself beyond all hopes of redemption.

1 - Blue (Eiffel 65)

US: Not on the list (...yet. #49 in 2000) / FR: #2

So. Uh. Yeah.

Blue by Eiffel 65 was, for a long, long, LONG time, my favorite song ever.

See? This is one of my oldest lists of favorite songs.

Another one from several months later.

A cd compilation of my favorite songs ever, which I made around 2003 or 2004 as well, with a booklet with lyrics entirely copied by hand and with every page painstakingly illustrated with panels and characters from my favorite comic at the time, Horologiom.

You open the booklet, and look at that, Blue is the second song right after Children.

This silly song which lists blue things and has a nonsensical chorus and one of the dumbest music videos of the entire 90s was, indeed, for years, my favorite song ever. Why. How. Well, first, please remember I am, in fact, a sucker for dance music and electronic music ESPECIALLY when a piano is involved, but this isn’t at all why this song was special to me (and still is, actually).

As I already mentioned, music has colors to me and guess what’s the dominant color of this song? Yepppppp. This is one of the bluest songs ever made even if there’s a little black, yellow and green here and there - the only song I can think about right now which out-blues it is Derezzed by Daft Punk.

And I can’t even begin to explain how SATISFYING a blue song called “Blue” listing blue things and which has an extremely blue music video is.

I know. It’s an embarrassing #1 even for 1999. It took me a long time to post this list partly for this reason. But I wouldn’t be honest if it was placed at any other position. It’s stupid, it’s repetitive, it’s meaningless. I absolutely love it and I’ve loved it for twenty years.

Deal with it.

Next up: the year when I actually started to buy cds with my own money, with debatable results.

What’s your favorite thing about summer?  That's a tough one! As an artist I'm spending most of my timed bent over a drawing table and wishing I was outside. Luckily my table faces a window that overlooks a tiny dog park. So I get to watch dogs poop, people scoop that stuff into plastic bags and then disappear. It's inspiring.

Other than that I get to travel. My girlfriend (Andria) and I just got back from New York, where we visited friends and family. We were there to exhibit at a convention (Five Points Fest) but we try to massage these trips into mini vacations. In July we'll be doing the same thing for a project I did with Kirk Hammet (guitarist from Metallica) at the Royal Ontario Museum in Canada! You betcha there hey! After that I'll be exhibiting in California at DesignerCon and in New York at NYCC. We'll turn those trips into more mini vacations with tiki bars, photo booths and hangouts with good friends.

How do you TAKE FIVE and chill out when you’re not arting? Panic! Fear! SELF-LOATHING! But seriously, while I'm freelancing for bands I also tattoo four days a week at Cauldron Tattoo here in Columbus, OH. 

Art is what defines me. So if I'm not "arting" I'm hustling to do more art. I get the most joy out of seeing an idea of mine go from a sketch to a finished piece. Whether it's a poster or a tattoo. 

I also have a small toy company with a friend - MetaCrypt. And I just collaborated with UVD Toys on the "Ghost Boner"! I drew it up as a piece of tattoo flash and it became really popular so I made a resin toy & enamel pin with UVD that we just released. I'm constantly trying to figure out ways to avoid getting a real job. To misquote "Lords Of Dogtown" - I plan to be on Summer Vacation for the rest of my life. So far it's worked. 

What’s something not many people know about you? I was born in San Diego, moved to Oahu, then grew up in Milwaukee, WI. From there I moved to Chicago to successfully drop out of art school after a year. Then I moved to Minneapolis, then Los Angeles, San Francisco, Manhattan and now Columbus, OH. I am probably not done moving. I've never had a drivers license and I hate condiments & cheese. Except for pizza cheese. 

I used to work in porn at Hustler magazine. Luckily they published Big Brother and I got to work on that too. One of my first freelance illustrations was published in Big Brother. I made sure that Hustler would be my last real job type job. It's been 16 years since I quit to go full-time as an artist. The first time I went to Disneyland - the Melvins took me! I'm left-handed. I'm a kutte-wearing member of the Turbojugend. I'm sure there's more boring stuff...

What’s the last book you read and would recommend to folks?  I read mostly books and articles on art and business. Wow...I'm really boring!!! Ugh...

I try to multitask while I'm working so I'll listen to a lot of audiobooks. Youtube has a ton of them for free. I'll mostly listen to classic horror by H.P. Lovecraft to keep me in the mood as I work on a project. Otherwise "Beastie Boys Book" by Michael Diamond and Adam Horovitz. Oh, and "Girl in a Band" by Kim Gordon! I highly recommend these books!

What’s the worst piece of advice you’ve ever gotten?  Don't go to art school - you'll never get accepted. Don't quit your job in porn - you'll never make it as an artist. Don't go into tattooing - you'll never succeed.

My mom was my biggest critic and eventually my biggest supporter. I grew up a million years ago in the 1980's & 90's. There weren't any examples of successful artists that we knew of. I auditioned and got accepted into the Milwaukee High School of the Arts. In my senior year, my art teacher pulled me aside and said "you'll never make it as an artist, so don't waste your time trying to apply to art school." My mom pretty much said the same thing. So I applied to art school! I went for a year and then dropped out because I was trying to pay for it all myself. Luckily I could with a small loan from my mom and grandma and all the side jobs I took on. The thought of owing that much money with no guarantee of a job terrified me. So I dropped out. Got several odd jobs ( I was a janitor and had to dispose of body parts) and then a job at a Kinko's where they had these things called "computers"! I used my job to teach myself graphic design and printing. That's when I began my poster career - I started designing posters for the local venue First Avenue in Minneapolis.

From there I moved to Los Angeles and found myself working at Hustler magazine on their 1-900 ads and scheduling the magazines. I was hired as an assistant art director and got fired the next day because one of Larry Flynt's relatives wanted a job so they got mine. 

A couple days later I got hired there again to work on the ads for various magazines. After a few years I wanted to quit. I was engaged at the time and my fiance told me to not quit because I'll "never make it as a professional artist." Ironically we split 3 months later. I quit Hustler on a Friday and started freelancing the next Wednesday. I've been working as a full-time artist ever since. 

A year later I got hired to design posters for the Van's Warped Tour (2004). (Where I did a poster for Taking Back Sunday.) I even got to go on tour with everyone. My job was to sign posters for 30 minutes a day and then watch bands. When the tour rolled into Milwaukee (where I grew up) I invited my mom to check it out.  

My mom got to see me do a signing and then we walked around. (I even got to introduce her to the guys in the Bouncing Souls!) I said "Look around. Do you see the posters everyone's holding? I designed those!!!" (Every day there were around 20,000 kids who attended the Warped Tour in whatever city it was in.) After that she understood I was doing ok as an artist and was glad I NEVER listened to the many times she told me to quit. From then on she was my biggest supporter. 

At her funeral many of her friends and coworkers told me how proud she was of me. That meant everything to me. Gah!! I'm starting to tear up.

The next chapter in my life has been tattooing. When I started out I had a girlfriend who was very toxic. She would constantly tell me that I was never going to make it as a tattoo artist and I should quit. Ironically we didn't last long. I'm starting to notice a pattern... I've been tattooing for 3 years now (under Mike Moses) and will be done with my apprenticeship in a month.

To make a long story longer - the WORST advice I got was the BEST advice. If you have people in your life that don't want to see you succeed and be happy - ignore them! Find people that support you!!! Take all that negative reinforcement and turn it into fuel to keep you motivated and going - even when those voices are the loudest and you want to quit.

The Best Horror Comedies of the 21st Century

Spooky season isn’t just about candy and trauma (although we enjoy those things as much as the next person), it’s also a perfect time to gather together for giggles. Horror and comedy go hand in hand and as well as the classics like An American Werewolf in London, Young Frankenstein and Army of Darkness the 21st century has coughed up plenty of new gems. We’ve rounded up 13 of our favourite to delight and amuse you this Halloween.

Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010) 

Just because you’re a redneck, it doesn’t make you a psycho, in this deceptively adorable anti-slasher where a bunch of vacationing college kids keep accidentally getting themselves killed trying to escape from the harmless Tucker (Alan Tudyk) and his lovely friend Dale (Tyler Labine). Eli Craig’s directorial debut is gruesome, gory, and very funny, but the movie is more than just a gimmick: there are some top horror twists here, too.

Shaun of the Dead (2004) 

Possibly the most iconic horror comedy of the 21st century, Edgar Wright’s Shaun of the Dead is the first part of the director’s “Cornetto Trilogy,” which all riff on genre and all star Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. Shaun is a “zom-rom-com” which sees Pegg’s leading man trying to win back his girlfriend in the face of a zombie apocalypse. It’s achingly British in its humor but has become an international cult classic, with cosplayers regularly dressing as Shaun. It came out in 2004 but still completely holds up today.

What We Do in the Shadows (2014)  

The movie that spawned the excellent TV show is a deeply funny mock-doc about vampires who share a house, written and directed by Taika Waititi and Jemaine Clement, who also star alongside Jonny Brugh and Ben Fransham. Set and shot in Wellington, New Zealand, the humor is silly, self-effacing, and specific. A genuinely hilarious riff on vampire and werewolf tropes.

Psycho Goreman (2020) 

One of the most joyful new horror comedies sees an all-powerful force of evil bested by the small girl who inadvertently releases him from cosmic jail. Problem child Mimi and the brother she bullies discover they can control “The Arch-Duke of Nightmares” and rename him Psycho Goreman. They just want to play games, he just wants to destroy the universe. Packed with over-the-top gore, great gags, and a surprising level of sweetness, this is an ’80s-style schlocker with a modern twist.

The Cabin in the Woods (2012) 

Directed by Drew Goddard, who went on to make the stylish, and star-studded Bad Times at the El Royale, this clever, surprising, love-hate letter to the horror genre is packed with rug pulls, reveals, and gags. The movie juxtaposes a typical gang of teens taking a doom-laden vacation and the white collar workers who are pulling the strings behind the scenes. If you somehow missed it–go watch! Now! If you’ve seen it before, this is a movie that rewards repeat viewing.

Slaxx (2020) 

This Canadian eco-horror about, yes, killer trousers, which played the festival circuit before making its way to Shudder, is actually smarter than it appears. Slaxx is set around a trendy designer store which purports to be ethically sound but is anything but. Yes, there are multiple pants-based slayings as a sentient pair of jeans exacts its bloody revenge on the store workers, but there’s also dark satire and a killer sense of humor at work here–and surprisingly a catchy, cool dance routine to boot.

Zombieland (2009) 

Zombieland: Double Tap seemed a little late when it came out in 2019, but that shouldn’t detract from the original, which was a refreshing take on the zom-com with great performances from its now-starry cast. Zombieland sees a bunch of misfits who name themselves after their respective hometowns navigate the apocalypse via a strict set of rules. Emma Stone, Jesse Eisenberg, Abigail Breslin, and Woody Harrelson star in this zippy comedy with heart, and a surprise cameo to die for.

Trick ’r Treat (2007) 

If a film ever truly captured the spirit of Halloween it’s this one. Michael Dougherty’s seasonal anthology movie weaves together four stories with a wraparound that brings just the right level of chills and giggles–it manages to be both funny and scary without compromising either. A murderous school principal, a bus driver with a horrible past, teenage girls reclaiming the night, and a little kid dressed in a burlap sack bring the Halloween spirit to life in this cult movie with a cool cast including Brian Cox and Anna Paquin.

Happy Death Day (2017) 

This Groundhog Day-style slasher sees college student Tree Gelbman (Jessica Rothe) get murdered on the day before her birthday, only to discover she’s stuck in a time loop and destined to relive the day over and over. It’s up to Tree to work out who’s been killing her, while fixing some bad life choices along the way. Blackly funny with some good kills–even if it is, largely speaking, the same person being killed–Happy Death Day is a glossy production from Blumhouse which spawned a sequel in 2019 that is also worth checking out.

Jennifer’s Body (2009) 

Karen Kusama’s tasty teenage satire was somewhat misunderstood at its release, criticized by some for not being funny or scary enough. But in recent years it has been embraced for its feminist themes as Megan Fox’s popular cheerleader Jennifer becomes demonically possessed and begins attacking the boys at her school. Amanda Seyfried is great as Jennifer’s best friend Needy, while Fox shines in her best role. Juno’s Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay, too, so the dialogue is as spiky and sharp as Jennifer’s teeth.

One Cut of the Dead (2017) 

Breakout Japanese indie One Cut of the Dead is a film of three parts, and there are three stages of watching. Part one: Why does everyone keep going on about this low-budget zombie film? Part two: OK fine, it’s smarter than I thought, but get a grip people. Part three: OMG One Cut of the Dead is the greatest film ever, I love it so much, it’s so clever and funny and brilliant, I must tell everyone I know about One Cut of the Dead. That’s all you need to know.

Freaky (2020) 

It’s a concept so cunning we wonder why it hasn’t been done before. Magic hokum means a teenage girl suddenly swaps bodies with a deranged serial killer. How will she convince anyone that he is really her, while stopping her possessed body from murdering her pals? Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon heads up this quirky slasher comedy which stars Vince Vaughn and Kathryn Newton having the time of their lives.

Slither (2006) 

Before he became a comic book movie darling, James Gunn made his directorial debut with this icky black comedy starring Nathan Fillion, Elizabeth Banks, and Michael Rooker. Chapter 6

Hannah looked at the card in her hand. There was a number listed on the front.

She quickly dialed the number on her phone.

She heard a incoherent mumble on the other end. It sounded drowsy.

Hello? She heard the voice mumbled back.

Is this Dak-ho Jung? She asked, her fingers somehow trembling.

Yes. The voice finally uttered out, appearing to be hesitant to answer at first.

This is...Hannah Park. She spoke up.

The rain fell more heavily as Hannah waited in front of the small restaurant.

Rain? Whenever it rains like this, it reminds me of losing my parents. They lost control on that bridge that day. It hit the rail and went over. They said the car was engulfed in flames. Their bodies burned beyond recognition. They said that I was lucky to survive the accident. That I was fortunate to not sustain any serious Injuries. I can't even remember anything about it. Yet whenever I heard the rain like this, I start to become afraid. Why? She pondered silently.

Suddenly the bright flashing headlights in front of her disrupted her wandering thoughts.

The headlights belong to a luxurious sleek royal blue sports car.

It parked quickly along the side of the sidewalk, where she was standing.

The driver then got out. He looked different this time. Before he was dressed in a suit and tie and now, he wore a gray turtleneck and a leather black jacket, and ripped jean pants. The style was so unlike him, yet it somehow suited him.

He walked towards Hannah in long strides. His wet, black hair hanging over his eyes.

He finally stopped in front of her. His dark brown eyes appeared gloomy, with dark purple circles forming underneath them.

Mrs. Park? He answered.

Hannah lifted her face in confusion.

She's isnt home yet. Chanyeol murmured to himself.

I'm worried. He said out loud, looking out the window.

He then walked over to his laptop and flipped it on.

He typed in Hannah's name in the search engine page.

Too many with that name. He chewed his lip, pouting.

He typed in Seoul, girl survives car accident 2004.

Nothing comes up, to his dismay. Frustrated, Chanyeol pounds his fists on the counter.

I hate this. Did they try to cover it up? He talks aloud again.

Let me try again. He thought, typing aggressively on his keyboard.

Finally a article pulls up. It looks familiar to him.

He clicks the link in curiosity.

Soon he staring back at their faces. Chairman of Park industries: Hyun Min Park and wife passed away in tragic, freak accident. Cause of a accident:speeding. Sole survivor: their daughter Hannah.

Hannah? Chanyeol whispers.

She looks like her mother. He blushes, turning away.

Does she? A voice whispers in his ear. It makes Chanyeol's hair stand up. He looks down at his arms. He has goosebumps.

Am I crazy now? He thought. He turned around, finding no one there.

This house is rather old, it must of been the wind. He mused quietly to himself, before returning to the screen in front of him.

Suddenly a loud crack of lightning can be heard from outside.

It is the sound of a storm coming in. The lights in the house flicker on and off and the computer has been shut off.

Now? He frowns. I'll have to check the electrical box.

He turns to walk away. He stops when he hears music streaming from the living area.

The melody is haunting, yet familiar to his ears. Its sweet, like a lullaby.

Chanyeol's heart is pounding now. He quickly pulls a long, sharp knife out of one of the kitchen drawers. He tip toes carefully to the alluring, melancholic music.

Who is it? He calls out in the darkness.

Suddenly the lights flicker back on and all that remains is the piano and the empty living room.

He walks towards the piano.

Did it this play? Impossible...He thought, touching the base and keys gently.

His eyes catch the portrait hanging above the fireplace. He somehow is entranced by it.

He hears glasses clinking and voices murmuring loudly in his ears. He hears classical piano music being played. He sees a couple dancing in the center of a huge room.

You remember, don't you? Somehow you do...A chilling voice utters behind him.

Chanyeol eyes flutter open in fear.

He turns around.

He points the knife up at the voice.

Are you upset? The voice replies coyly.

The man has his finger now on the tip of the blade.

The man has mischievous black eyes. Long dark wavy hair, which falls to his shoulders. He's dressed impeccably in a black suit. He licks his lips at Chanyeol's terrified reaction.

Who...who they hell are you? Chanyeol stuttered.

You don't recognize me? The man smiles, taunting him.

No. Don't come any closer! I warn you, I know how to defend myself!! He argued back, swinging the knife around madly.

Then why are you shaking so much? The man laughs wickedly, his eyes dancing with excitement.

You needn't be afraid of me, Sujoon. The man grinned. I won't hurt you.

Sujoon? My name is Chan.. He starts to say

The man chuckles at his reaction

Well who gives a damn who I am to you. I don't have to introduce myself. You...how did you get into my house?! He hollers back.

You're house? The mysterious man chuckled back, clearly amused.

You should be grateful I allowed you to stay here in the first place. He smiled at Chanyeol.

I bought this house rightfully so. So yes, it belongs to me! Chanyeol yells out in frustration.

Is that the way to treat your dear family? The man grinned. He is now holding up Chanyeol effortlessly in the air by the neck. Chanyeol drops the knife to the ground below him.

Family? Chanyeol repeated. Sweat collecting on his forehead.

The man laughed again, dropping him as Chanyeol fell to the ground in a thud. Chanyeol began to cough. You are nuts!

I erased your memories, just as you begged me to back then. The man explained.

Chanyeol moved backwards on the ground.

You're even frightened by me. I'm so disappointed. The man sighed.

Think...think long and hard Sujoon. The man whispered, staring down at him.

Hannah!! Let's go!!

Where are we going?! The little girl asked.

That was Baek hyeon back there? The girl answered back.

Don't follow that guy. He's dangerous. Do you hear me?! Ok?! He shouted at her, grabbing her by the shoulders roughly.

But he doesn't mean any harm. And didn't you ask if he wanted to play with us earlier? Why did you change your mind? Why do you act like you hate him? She breathed out, her eyes watering.

You shouldn't be here. You should've stayed home. He snapped back.

Why? Why do you two have to have all the fun? Aren't we all friends? She cried out.

Its not safe here, that's why. You wouldn't understand!!

How do you know?! She shouted back.

Because....because...we're not like you. We're different. That's why. He said out loud.

They were now standing outside in the garden.

How? She questioned him, raising her eyes in suspicion.

Its complicated. He mumbled under his breath.

Her eyes grew wide then, when she saw the smoke emerging from the back door.

Fire!!! There's a fire!! She blurted out.

Oh my father. My father is in there!! Hannah yepled, running towards the huge mansion. Her wrist got pulled back by Sujoon.

Let me go!! She fought back, biting on his arm before he released her.

Hannah. Please don't go!!He pleaded. He looked down at his arm and the bite mark was gone now.

He ran after her until she stopped in front of a room. She heard her fathers voice. He sounded drunk.

Father!! She almost screamed, running towards the entrance before Sujoon covered her mouth and held her back by the waist.

She saw a tall man then leaning over her intoxicated father.

His menacing purple eyes locking, as if with hers.

Please be quite. He'll hear you. He whispered back into Hannah's ear.

But dad...?she whispered.

Hide over there, please. He ordered, shoving her aside.

Why? Why...is my father with that man? She whined.

Go! He growled in a low voice, pushing her away, before slammed the door shut.

The tall man chuckled, amused by the boys frantic response. He looked up and pushed the dead man's body away

What fragile beings. The tall man uttered back in disgust.

So you saw me? The man frowned, ruffling his hair.

How could you? The boy squeaked out, dumbfounded at the scene.

What...? The tall man looked unbothered.

You promised me, you wouldn't abuse your power. You said you wouldn't kill them. How could you do it then?! The boy finished.

I had no other choice. The man replied.

Are....we just monsters? The boy whimpered.

Is that all we all are?! If it is...I hate it!! Little Sujoon bawled.

You despise what you are? Look, I didn't have to raised you. A simple half breed, who wasn't even supposed to be born. He growled in Sujoons ear, yanking his hair up. Sujoon grimaced in pain.

Do you think I'm fond of you? No. You're too weak. He muttered back, throwing him aside.

Sujoon crawled backwards away.

And yet, I took you in. I nursed you to health and gave you all the luxuries, desires of your heart and this how you treat me? Accept it. Your mother was nothing more than an ignorant fool, who fell in love with a mere human. Humans....they are nothing but our source for survival. So, you shouldn't associate with them any longer. I allowed you to be with that girl, thinking you would kill her someday. I thought it was a phase. But then.. I realized you became too attached to her.

Sujoon looked down in embarrassment.

I understand it too well. I kept one as a pet myself,until recently. She was incredibly beautiful and obedient. She never disobyed my orders. She always did as I told. I made a mistake though.

What? Sujoon breathes out.

I gave her too much freedom, as with you. I was too lenient. You know what they say, you give the hand, they'll take the whole arm?

Huh? Sujoon mumbled.

Why did I have to be so kind to her? Just because she was lonely and wanted a glimpse of her child? Hypocrites. He said, narrowing his eyes.

Suddenly Sujoon is thinking of that woman in that ball room with this same man lying on the floor.

Was it that at woman...you danced with? Was it her? Sujoon interrupted.

Was it her? He asked again, desperate to know.

The tall man sighed.

Where...is she? Sujoon questioned, eager to know. He should've known not to look, but he did. His eyes saw something in the corner of the room, past the man's dead body. It was lying on the bed.

Over there. The man pointed at the bed.

No! Sujoon wailed out, concealing his face. His eyes began to fill with tears.

Do you know who that woman was? He whispered.

Sujoon shook his head, trembling.

Do you want to know a secret? The man smirks.

You're mother. He mouthed out.

Sujoon's mouth fell open in horror.

Liar!!! He screamed back.

Well...she used to be your mother. He chuckled.

The man grabbed him by the arm, forcing him to stare. Look into her eyes. So lifeless. I didn't want to...Sujoon. But she left me with no other choice. She was so selfish. She just wanted to protect her other child. That's all she ever talked about.. The man complained.

Child...? Little Sujoon said, intrigued.

Oh you thought it was you, I was referring to? No. It was that girl, who you played with often.

Sujoon felt nauseated, he leaned over to vomit on the floor.

Oh don't tell me you actually liked her? Do you feel disgusted being related to her...? He perked up, staring into Sujoon's flabbergasted eyes.

Sujoon began to cough more at his response.

Kill me then. Sujoon pleaded in a breathless voice.

No. He told him in a icy voice.

I won't. I'll let you suffer. He told him.

Sujoon clung to his pants leg. I beg of you!!!

The man gave a sympathetic smile.

Please.... The boy cried out miserably.

You want me to? The man grinned, patting his head.

Ok, come here, then. I won't do it now but I'll make you forget. I'll erase your memories. You will live as an ordinary human. However your life will be very difficult compared to the others around you. You'll even become confused and distant, wondering what is wrong with you. But eventually, you will grow up into a man and remain the same for many years to come. And with every passing time, your memories from the past will lessen, until you no longer recall anything. Its lightning now. Hannah said to Dak-ho, looking out the window.

She was sitting in his car on the passenger seat.

The owner of the restaurant said that you wanted to see me.

Yes. I did. He sighed.

Yes...He trailed off.

You're wondering if I remember anything from that night?

Do..you? He chimed in.

Hannah shook her head.

Are...are you still apart of it? She stuttered out.

No. He mumbled honestly, shaking his head.

Right...that man took over. Is this case really important to you?

He nodded his head.

I don't want it to happen again. He replied, looking down.

Again? She repeated.

Remember, I told you about how I had been trying to track him for years. But I wasn't so lucky to find him. He was always two steps ahead of me?

You said 50 years before....but you don't look that old? She answered.

Yes..that's because my father was once an investigator. I'm doing this for him. I'm not sure if you remember....or heard of it? It was before you were born , back in the 70's. It was televised nationally. It was in regards to Koreas known serial killer. The perpetrator had abducted and murdered them in the same fashion and dumped their bodies in the forest. My father was in charge of that case during that time. He was the one, who was looking for the murderer, even when the case turned up cold. He never got the chance to catch him. He unfortunately passed away 10 years ago, when I was 18. Dak-ho explained.

So you chose this occupation because you want to finish his work? She asked him.

Hmm..He murmured.

But that's not only the reason I chose to be an police investigator. I did it to find the girl I met a long time ago. He said.

A girl? Hannah looked up at him.

Yes.....it happened 13 years ago, when I started having the memories. She called me her brother then. The crazy thing is I don't know if it was real or in my mind. If I had even imagined it all? She motivated me also to follow in my dad's footsteps. But at the same time, when I came upon your case, I was more than troubled by it.

Why? She asked.

Because this case was similar to the one my father investigated. I don't know if it's a copycat committing these crimes. The deaths of the women, appeared to be killed in the same manner. Also the fact that you were found there unharmed in the same spot. That's why I'm so interested in you.

Me? She mumbled.

Yes, you...also remind me of that girl I met long ago too.

Hannah dropped her eyes at this.

I know you probably think I'm crazy. He scoffed.

No. I'm just flustered by it. She mumbled.

I have dreams about chasing after her in a dark forest but I can't find her. His eyes began to water at this.

I..don't know what happened to her but I feel almost responsible for her ended up missing. He answered in a solemn voice.

Anyway its getting late. I should take you home. He replied.

No! That isn't necessary. I'll go alone by myself. She yelped, taken him aback.

I mean I'm currently staying with someone and I don't want them to be concerned. They are probably wondering where I am right now. I don't want to keep them waiting. Plus it stopped raining, I'll be fine. She insists.

Ok. He sighs.

You have my number now. If you want to talk to me again, you can just call me. She smiled.

He nodded his head. Bye. He waved.

So do you remember now? The man asks.

No. Chanyeol lies.

The man in front of him is puzzled to hear this.

Why...should I believe a stranger like you?Family,huh? Chanyeol chuckles back. He has stopped shaking now. All fear disappeared.He has a bit of confidence in him now, which confuses the man further.

Maybe I should give you your memories back then? The man says in his head.

I could kill you right now. The man mutters.

But you won't. Chanyeol smiles back to the man's dismay.

You're not afraid of me anymore? The man asks, cocking his head to one side.

Truthfully, I don't know if you are real or if I'm dreaming? Chanyeol answers.

The man rolls his eyes at Chanyeol's answer. He doesn't seem pleased.

He quickly stands before him, facing Chanyeol. He bares his teeth, his lips curled back in disgust. But Chanyeol doesn't budge still.

Let's say this "was" your house but it's not anymore. Is it? He smirked.

Sujoon ah....you dare disrespect me?! The man hollers out furiously.

Sujoon? No...My name is Choi Chanyeol. He tells the strange man. He grips the man's shoulders.

You....are deceiving me..?

Do you know what you are?! The mysterious man argues back.

Chanyeol laughs at his irritated expression.

Leave me be. Chanyeol replies in s serious voice.

Then let me give them back to you. The man smiles wickedly, grabbing his hand.

And Chanyeol sees everything, his past life flashing behind his eyes. He sees his mother lying dead on the bed. He sees himself as a homeless child in the 1930s, digging through trash cans and hiding behind buildings. He sees himself as a young man, shuffling past soldiers in the 1950s on a busy street, where people are being dragged out of their houses at gunpoint. He sees himself tracing his hands along a graffiti wall durung the 1970s, while leaning against a silver convertible. Then lastly, the early 2000s. He sees a wounded young girl walking along an isolated highway. She is familiar to him, yet he doesn't understand why.

Chanyeol pulls his hand away.

I can't show him that I know the truth. He thought.

What are you doing?! Chanyeol stammers out.

Sujoon....you've forgotten everything?! You're even immune to my touch. He murmured, dumbfounded.

Will you go now? So I can wake up from this nightmare? I don't wish to see your face now. Chanyeol lies.

Ok. I will allow it. The man agrees. I'll give you space until you remember. He winks back.

Chanyeol opens his eyes and the man is now gone.

Oh...god...did I really imagine him? He wonders, falling over the piano.

No...he was real and those were my lost memories. Thats why I look so young...I was a half....I was a half...He rambles on.

Mr. Choi? Hannah asks, disrupting his way ward thoughts.

When you first saw him, standing onstage, tossing his beautiful red hair seductively, singing with the voice of an angel to an adoring crowd, you thought, He's a fucking god. But, slowly, as you came to know him, you discovered that Gerard was only human. Trying desperately not to fall into the same addiction that had plagued him in his twenties. Questioning if he was as attractive as the fangirls said he was - and if they would still love him if he packed on a few pounds, if he looked, again, like the fat, dateless nerd he'd been in high school. 

"They only love me," he'd told you, a melancholy look in his eyes, "because they don't know who I am." 

"That's not true, Gee," you'd protested. "I know you very well, and I love you very much."

But, you weren't sure if he believed it. 

You'd followed My Chemical Romance on the World Contamination Tour, and on this cold February night, you were in Osaka, Japan. Frank confided in you that at this same venue, six years ago, before sobriety, Gerard had gotten drunk enough to make himself horrifically sick, and, after the show, he'd spent the rest of the night vomiting into a trash can backstage. 

"That was rock bottom for him, I think," Frank recalled, frowning. "I didn't find out til later that not long after that, he told Brian he wanted to kill himself." 

"But, that was a long time ago, Frankie," you assured the guitarist. "Gerard was only twenty seven when that happened. He's thirty-three, and he's better now. He's happy."

"Is he?" Frank questioned. 

"Why wouldn't he be?" you shrugged. "He's in one of the most successful rock bands in the world." You'd even heard "Sing" get played on Top 40 radio. MCR was popular, rich, and famous. 

"He's just...." Frank sighed. "When we came offstage in Toronto last month, before we started this leg of the tour...he had that look in his eye. Like he did back then." 

"Maybe I should go talk to him, before sound check starts," you decided, feeling worried about your boyfriend. %%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%%% You found him in his dressing room, morosely smoking a cigarette. 

"Those have got to be bad for your lungs, babe," you said, putting your arms around him from behind as he stared at his reflection in the mirror. 

"I've been smoking the whole time I've been in this band," Gerard shrugged. "Hasn't ruined my singing voice yet." 

"Well, don't you want to be able to keep singing for a long time, though?" you insisted.

"I don't know," Gerard replied. "I guess." 

"You guess?!" you repeated, shocked. 

"I just....I don't know if I'll be singing for My Chem that much longer," Gerard confessed. "Truthfully, I didn't think we were going to keep going past Black Parade in the first place. I'm amazed we made it this far." 

"What are you talking about?" you gasped. You couldn't believe Gerard was talking like this. "Why would you quit now? You're at the top of your game! 'Sing' is number two on the Billboard alternative chart right now - it may even move to number one. 'Planetary (Go!)' just got nominated for a Kerrang Award." 

"So?" Gerard shrugged apathetically.

"What do you mean, 'so'?" you protested. "You're about to play a sold-out show tonight! Kids from a country where they don't even speak the language you sing in spent their money on tickets to see you, because they love you!" 

"They don't love me," Gerard argued. "They love a pretty face on a poster. They love their idea of me." 

"Well, I love you," you said, your voice breaking as you felt like you might cry. "And I don't know why you're acting like this." 

"I'm sorry, Y/N," Gerard said softly,  putting out his cigarette and gathering you in his arms. "I've just been feeling depressed lately." 

"Why are you depressed?" you asked.

"Well," Gerard laughed bitterly, "there is the small thing where I have depression. My chemicals aren't balanced right. There doesn't always have to be a reason." 

"But, is there one?" you wondered. 

"The thing is...." Gerard sighed. "All this - the constant touring, the pressure to give the fans the best show of their lives, when I'm tired and my vocal chords fucking hurt and I didn't sleep last night because I was in an airplane seat that made my back ache......it's a lot, okay?"

"I know it is," you said sympathetically, rubbing his back. "Frank's started taking pills just to keep himself awake so he can play guitar properly." 

"He shouldn't have to do that," Gerard frowned. "But, I mean, what are we supposed to tell the fans, who spent all this money to come see us? 'Sorry, no show tonight, my guitarist needs a nap'?"

"You can't do that," you admitted.

"Of course I can't," Gerard snapped. "I've got to be the perfect, pretty rock god Gerard Way, at all times, even if sometimes I want to be anything else." 

"I think you put too much pressure on yourself," you said softly.

"It's not just me pressuring me," Gerard shook his head. "It's the label, it's Craig, Howard, Brian, even the guys sometimes! You know how Ray is, he'll have us rehearse the same song fifty times until he's sure we can play it to his standards." 

"I'm sure if you talked to Ray, he'd chill a little during rehearsal," you suggested.

"No, his perfectionism, my obsessiveness - these are the things that made our music sound as good as it does," Gerard had to admit. "But, at the same time, it makes being in My Chemical Romance exhausting. It's not fun anymore. It's work." 

"So, you're just going to quit?" you asked uncertainly. 

"I don't know," Gerard mumbled. "I....I don't know what I'm saying right now. Blame it on the sake I was drinking before you walked in."

"You've been drinking?!" you gasped. 

Gerard did not drink. If the band was at some kind of party, and everybody else was drinking, Gerard would have a diet soda. MCR was not a band that went out and got wasted for fun. They couldn't, because Gerard was an alcoholic. He'd quit drinking (and abusing drugs) in 2004, when addiction had made him depressed and suicidal. 

"I'm not drunk or nothing," Gerard argued. "I just had one or two glasses."

"But, you haven't touched one glass in six years, Gee!" you gaped. "When you're an addict, you can't risk having 'just one', because you never know when it could spiral into more than that. You're.....you're relapsing." 

"I am," Gerard admitted. "What do you want from me, Y/N? I can't do this shit sober anymore! I can't keep going out there and smiling for the cameras like I'm okay when I'm not! I can't keep skipping lunch because I want to look like the perfect rock star they all expect me to be!" 

"You've been skipping meals?" you asked, surprised. 

"Yeah," Gerard confided. "The fans, they need to be perfect. They call me their hero, their inspiration to live. I have to live up to that. I have to be who they need me to be." 

"Just be yourself," you disagreed. "I know the real you, and I love you, Gee."

"Maybe you only love me because I hide things from you," Gerard said bitterly. "You didn't know about the sake, or the starving myself." 

"Well, now I know," you said, pulling him tighter. "And I'm sad, and I'm worried about you, but I still love you, dammnit. Even if you're not perfect." 

"Are you always going to love me?" Gerard asked. "Will you still love me, even if I break up this band?"

"I don't think you should break up," you advised, stroking his red hair. "At least not yet." 

"Ok," Gerard nodded hesitantly. "I'll keep going. For now. I'll go out there, and I'll do this show, the best I can."

"And you'll do great," you assured him. 

"If you say so," Gerard said, trying to smile. "Just know that I'm doing this for you, love."

Hello friends! I just realized I forgot to tell everyone that I wasn’t going to post this Sunday in order to catch up on work in preparation for finals. 

I hope to make up for it with this very sad house. 

Some houses require lots of creative backstories to make them fun because they are so boring. This house was so pathetic and sad that I really didn’t need to add many jokes about existential dread, late capitalist irony, or divorce. It kind of speaks for itself. 

To give you an idea, this is the most positive picture in the bunch:

This...house, built in 1995, boasts a whopping 5 beds and 6 bathrooms - and can be yours for around $700,000 dollars. Shall we?

Great Room (no foyer pics, sadly)

I told you it was depressing. There’s really no hope for that particular shade of oak in today’s housing landscape. The only time you see wood in that color these days is in Bass Pro Shops and unfortunate log cabins. 

But it’s okay, because they HAVE

Sitting Room 2

Okay, I’ve never seen drawers beneath a fireplace before. What could you store in them besides fire supplies that wouldn’t get super damaged? Also the placement of the fireplace is just...bizarre. I’m not a fire safety specialist but I am concerned.

I don’t hate my family, but if we all had to sit in that room together, all bets are off. “Honey, will you pass the potatoes?”  “No. No I won’t.”

Also the stairs on the right are carpeted, and it’s ugly carpet.

I kind of get the high ceiling thing if this is the alternative. $700k and y’all can’t spring for something better? At least the trim is white.

I’m the last of 4 kids so if my older siblings didn’t like a film, I didn’t watch it. This film is an example of that so at the age of 21 I watched Wizard of Oz for the first time. It’s obviously a very popular film so it’s not like I didn’t know the story or the songs but I still thoroughly enjoyed it. The whole witch melting by accident was a bit shit though but other than that Judy you talented thing and her little comrades too #squadgoals. Also Toto is the same dog as Bright Eyes and I loved him even more than I did before.

Introduce yourself  My name is Patricia Colli, but people call me Pacolli (it doesn't really have a funny story behind the name, it was just my first email because i wasn't much of a Patty and I had a band with my friend Ronaldo who introduced me to everyone as Pacolli, eventually I stopped fighting it and embraced it, it's like a one name thing like Cher and I like Cher). I'm 35, born in São Paulo (Brazil) and I live in San Francisco, California with my husband and also artist Mildred.

What’s the first thing you remember drawing?  How did you first get interested in art and making art? I remember drawing a house in the hills when I was in school and the teacher said that wasn't really good, I went to an italian catholic school in Brazil and they were not a fan of arts. Maybe that's why I started, in a very shy way, to go around it and start drawing all the time. I didn't like school from day one so I started drawing during classes to escape from it. In 7th grade I started drawing the guys that my friends and I had crushes on and passing them during class, we would laugh so much because the drawings were really sketchy and they were all about skipping class to go see them and skipping class to go to concerts, getting fake IDs and being crazy, recklessly teenagers!I always kept something like a sketchbook journal through the years and eventually they started to become zines, and then t-shirts...

What’s your artistic process like? Do you keep a sketchbook or doodle everywhere you go? I do keep a sketchbook with me at all times, and I make a lot of lists of things to draw. I also write down funny/interesting things I heard or read somewhere. I like to take my time to come up with an idea and daydream as much as I can about it before doing it. I like the process of coming up with something and letting it reveal itself as I go on. It's like finding something about yourself there.

How did your life go from drawing as a hobby to drawing as a career? I used to work on MTV Brazil as a producer and I used to make my own calendars with a big drawing on top, my co-workers used to make copies of those to use them too... I thought it was cool that people liked it but I never thought I could do this for a living. A couple years went by and I started screen printing some t-shirts and got invited for a fashion art show in Antwerp (Belgium). It was funny cause I started being asked to participate in art shows and collaborative zines in Europe but never in Brazil, so it was like a fun side gig to me. Eventually I started getting some freelance illustration/t-shirt design gigs/art shows in Brazil and abroad and gave up my tv job, started traveling where my art was taking me and it took me to San Francisco where I am since then.

What are some of the hardest challenges you have faced as an artist and how did you overcome them? It was hard to manage the ups and downs of the job and understand that's how it goes, sometimes you get called to make a bunch of shows and gigs at the same time and sometimes it feels like there's nothing happening for months to end... so I like to make things happen when I have these slower times, experiment different mediums, collaborate with other artists, start a new personal project and be productive. It's important to keep a perspective about those things and to not compare your path to anyone else cause that won't help. I tend to get anxious if I don't have projects lined up, but if there are no opportunities you have to create them yourself.

You have some many various types of characters – heart shaped people, coffee cup personalities to rabbit / cat people.  What’s the inspiration behind some of them and do they all sort of have personalities? I guess I see faces everywhere lol, drawing humans is challenging! I make myself laugh sometimes when I'm drawing strange creatures that don't exist doing humane things, it's like it's ok for them to look a bit off because there's nothing to compare them to, you know? I like drawing these characters with human feelings but not in a human form because it's more fun and freeing. Sometimes I make these creatures inspired by my friends, I drew the album cover for my friend's band Polara and we used to drink so much coffee all the time, I thought the best way to go about was to draw a bunch of espresso coffee cups dancing like crazy and dizzy bumper cars cause that's how you feel listening to their music after all that coffee!

It’s always really cool to see you printing your own stuff from shirts to stickers  When did you first start silk screening and printing your own things? Has the process evolved for you? I had some friends that screen printed t-shirts and I knew the basic process of doing it, so one day I decided to try one myself and I fell in love with the process and results. It was like playing with stamps all over again (I played with stamps and stickers my whole childhood). Since I was self taught in a way, I didn't know what I was doing...so I started to print things a bit different, not doing the same image over and over. I got a small squeegee and I took my time printing each drawing at once and composing a different story behind each tshirt. I became a screen hoarder!, I never throw them away (unless if they're clogged but I don't let it happen much) and bring them from Brazil - i know, it's crazy! I found my happy place doing these 1/1 prints, it gives me new ideas every time I'm printing, I see new possibilities and experiment without fear, it's very calming and exciting at the same time.

How many zines have you self-published?  How did you first start creating your own zine? I self published six zines so far, my intention was to publish at least one every year but I've been slacking on that goal. I had too many sketchbooks full of drawings, my friends would tell me to do something with them and I was always shy and a bit embarrassed about sharing personal things, one of my friends called me out that all I like a lot from other artists are personal and maybe embarrassing things lol.. so yeah I had no excuse anymore! Reading Jeffrey Brown, Vanessa Davis and Esther Pearl Watson really encouraged me to make my own zine at that time! They're work is very personal and it was definitely an inspiration to me!

What is it that you love so much about zine culture?   I think it's a very specific kind of subject that you couldn't find anywhere else (before the internet got huge). I started reading music zines about underground indie and punk bands. I think I still see it in the same way, a place to put on specific things you don't find anywhere else. I'm really into checking out the paper and print style, small editions with something handmade or hand drawn on it always get my attention. They're hard to find these days! Fun Chicken (the online shop from Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson) have really cool zines and I'm always checking Fudge Factory Comics (Travis Millard's online store) cause there's always cool zines. Well everything they have is amazing!

What have been some of your favorite collaborations? What do you enjoy most about them?   I collaborate a lot with my husband, he's been making art and zines for a long time too and every now and then I'll sneak one of our collabs in my zines and vice versa. It's important to have some intimacy with whoever you're collaborating with so you can say what you really think. It's fun to do it and I always learn something from the experience. 

Is there a medium you want to try and haven’t?  What is currently your favorite medium and why? I got a wood burner from my in-laws last christmas and I haven't tried yet, it's sitting next to me and I'm very excited to try it out.I really like painting with acrylics and india ink on wood panels, there's so many possibilities and room for trial and error.

What are your top 5 artistic influences, past and contemporary?  When I saw Dan Clowes comics for the first time, it changed my life! The way he draws and portrays the world was so new but so familiar in a way... he's a huge influence to me because it sparkled my interest in expressing myself through drawing. The same happened when I first saw the art of Clayton Brothers, I realized art could be so cool!! Their paintings and drawings blew my mind, I have never seen anything like that... I remember trying to like mainstream art like Picasso and Mondrian but I truly didn't have an emotional connection to any of these guys, I knew that I felt different when I saw Clayton Brothers in the cover of Juxtapoz in 2004. It was hard to find this kind of art in Brazil, and still is! Keith Haring went to São Paulo in the 80's and painted murals, he was on the tv and I thought he was such a cool guy. My mom gave me a calendar with his drawings on it and I loved it and kept it for years! Same thing happened when I discovered Warhol, his persona was always intriguing to me and it made me like his art even more. I grew up watching and reading Peanuts, so I don't think I can leave Charles Schultz out of this list. I don't separate comics from art, they have the same impact for me. I love his ability to create his own world and still being completely relatable, it's also kind of simple but extremely complex at the same time.

There’s an autobiographical nature and intimacy to a lot of your works because they come from feelings and experiences you’ve had or gone through or thought.   Can you talk a little bit of maybe you’ve used some bad experiences in your life to create art from that has been maybe therapeutic?  I feel like since my first sketchbooks were sort of journal like, that I've always had this relationship with drawing and letting emotions out... and it's therapeutic, cheaper than therapy as I always say! It's hard for me sometimes to not let it out, so I don't hold back anymore. It's funny cause the more embarrassed I am of something ultra personal that I drew, the more I get people to write me and say they really liked it. My first two zines were miserably sad ("I thought it was a love story" and "Mad for Sadness") I didn't know what to do with myself so I put together a zine with all those feelings. It kept me busy, which is usually a great thing, and a few years later I got emails from these teenage high school girls from San Francisco telling me their teacher showed my zine in class (!!) and they thought it was a good way to survive a heartbreak. I thought it was so sweet! I never thought about it before, you know? Sad things will happen anyway but how you deal with them is up to you.

What common misconception do you think folks might have about being an artist or making art for a living? I think the internet makes things look easier and more glamorous than they really are. I grew up seeing cartoonists drawing and being a bit miserable like Robert Crumb. Have you seen the documentary "Crumb"? I knew it wasn't easy being him and doing what he was doing, maybe it made me have even more respect for his work. He never tried to portray any glamour about being an artist and I think it's more like the real thing. These days people don't care for struggle, they seem to always want the easy way and that's not how art goes most of the time so I think it's funny and sad in a way. People rip off your work and forget you're a human too, trying to survive in this messy world.

What do you do to overcome those days when nothing you’re making is turning out right? What do you like to do in your off time? I like to read books when I don't know what to do with myself, it helps me to shift the focus and get into something else than my own drama. It helps me with anxiety and always sparks new ideas. Going to concerts and playing drums are my other escape tools for living a better life, music is magic... the power of live music is amazing, going to concerts is one of my favorite things to do!

Tell us about your recent trip to visit Brazil.  When you lived there, you used to do some events called Bendgy. Can you tell us how they came about and how your recent visit went? I lived in São Paulo for 28 years, it's a huge city with a lot of cultural things happening all the time, the pace of the city is maddening and it's hard to keep focus sometimes, but regardlessly it's where i'm from and I love it! I started throwing an art party/concerts in my apartment when I started to make tshirts around 2006-2007. It was a very low profile thing, just for friends and just for fun... i didn't wanted to reach out to places that already existed and try to sell my art because it was weird... so I started something unpretentious to do what I was doing and that's Bendgy!It was an art party with a concert Saturdays afternoon in my apartment, i would sell beers, vegan sandwiches and tshirts. A lot of my friends are musicians so I wanted to have a band and we would support each other, it started getting bigger and I was scared of the risk of being kicked out of my apartment for the loud noise and amount of people coming in...I threw a few Bendgys at my friends places and eventually my dad moved out of his house and it was empty for a while, I started throwing bigger concerts there and it was so much fun!

How is Bendgy now? I just came back from SP and it was a long process but now Bendgy is a real art space, I got a great staff and we open every Saturday! We're having an international art show called "Hit the ground running" with the art of Albert Reyes, Jason Vivona, Jeff Roysdon, Mats!?, Mildred, Michael Hsiung (you!) and myself! In addition to the art show, there's a zine/print/tshirt/stickers shop and we have more affordable things from all the artists in the show and from other great artists from the US, Argentina and Brazil. I'm stoked that it turned out the way it did! It was so much hard work putting it together, I thought I was going crazy.. i felt like Donal Duck, but it was worth it!I book every band and make almost every flyer for it, so it's like I'm there but I'm not.

During your time living in São Paulo, Brasil, what was the art scene like?   It was most like an all boys club to be honest. Graffiti and pixação (São Paulo style of tagging) were the underground art that I liked but always made by guys, some really talented ones too! Like, Os Gemeos still blow my mind and were always a reference for me to what brazilian art is, even though they are more respected as artists outside Brazil. I think they're a good example, for some reason Brazil doesn't cherish their own artists until someone else says it's good. It needs a foreign stamp of approval that always made me bored about it because there's so many great artists there!

Who are some artists in Brazil you admire? and why? I love Stephan Doitschinoff's art, he creates his own world and he is very focused on being true to who he is. His work has always been an inspiration to me on how to do things, if there's not a scene for what you're doing you create the scene! 

Throw a zine fest or an art party, and make no excuses for not doing things. People tend to complain there's not enough opportunities there, but i feel like it's also in our own hands to make things happen and not just wait for someone to invite you to be part of something. Jaca is another extremely talented artist living in São Paulo, he is super humble and not really into posting his art online. He doesn't need no approval or applause and I love that! He looks inside himself and his works reveal that to us, it's very inspiring! He will have a solo show at Bendgy in July and I can't wait to see what he's going to do.

When did you start your online store High in the Bay?  The products on there are all hand made by you in SF?  What’s it like keeping your own shop?   I started High in the Bay with my husband, Mildred, when I moved to SF in 2010 to make it up for the fact that I couldn't do a Bendgy here (i would have been evicted right away) so we did an online store.We do carry zines from other artists that we like and sometimes we make collaborative zine packs so people get to know other things than our own work, they get to see what we like! I brought some books, prints and zines from an amazing artist from Argentina called Tomás Spicolli, his work has been a big influence to me so I was very happy to have his art at Bendgy and soon at High in the Bay. It's important to learn to manage something even if it's an online shop, so then you get the grip of it and can do things better in the future, I used to work at Needles and Pens and I learned a lot from them on how to do things, it really helped me when I was doing Bendgy and High in the Bay.

You done a lot of cool art for bands!  What has been your favorite collaboration?  Thanks, man! I have to say I've been lucky to have worked with cool people, like I told before the Polara album cover was a cool one, it's coming out sometime this year in Brazil. All the bands were really cool to me and we became friends, I did a tshirt design for Josh Berwanger Band a few years ago, it had a funny request "draw Patrick Swayze in Road House"! And there was another album cover i did for Swivs that was so much fun to do, his music is so good!!

Give us your top 5 bands or tunes while creating?  How does music influence your art?  I'm very into the new Afghan Whigs album called "In Spades", and all their music really. It's one of my favorite bands ever, I have drawn so many of their lyrics consciously and unconsciously!I just came back from a concert last night in Oakland from another favorite of mine, The Magnetic Fields.  They're great and i came back from Brazil earlier just to see them, love everything that Stephin Merritt does, forever and ever.I'm very into the same bands for the longest time, I love the Ramones, Pulp, Os Mutantes, Cypress Hill, Tupac, Jonathan Richman, Spaceman 3... my music taste is all over the place!Music is a major influence to me, since I was a kid my best friend was not my pen but my radio.

What are your favorite Vans? how would you describe your personal style?Ok, there was a limited edition Lo Pros Saddle shoes that was SO cool! I have a photo of me wearing it, cause i wore it all the time! I'm a Hi Top girl, black and white or just white ones, love those!
