Lewis: "Was death instant?" Morse: "Instantaneous, Lewis. Coffee may be instant, death may not." (Colin Dexter; Inspector Morse)
Born in Gorton, Manchester, on 3 January, 1942, John Edward Thaw, CBE, was an English actor, perhaps best remembered for his role as Chief Inspector Morse (adapted from the novels of Colin Dexter, by Zenith Productions for Central Independent Television; 1987 - 2000)
John grew up in Gorton and Burnage, his mother having left when he was seven. Thereafter, he attended the Ducie Technical High School for Boys, and later the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art (RADA).
Soon after leaving RADA, John  made his formal stage début in A Shred of Evidence, at the Liverpool Playhouse (his performance earning him a contract with the theatre). His first film role was opposite Tom Courtenay in the adaptation of The Loneliness of the Long Distance Runner (1962), and he also acted on-stage that year opposite Sir Laurence Olivier in Semi-Detached.
Thereafter, John appeared in several episodes of the BBC police series Z-Cars. Though it was his performances as the hard-bitten, tough-talking Flying Squad detective, Jack Regan, in The Sweeney (1975–1978), that established him as a major star in the United Kingdom.
John's final appearance as the opera-loving, crossword-solving Morse, was in The Remorseful Day; where, filmed in the grounds of Exeter College, Morse suffered a heart attack, and later died in the John Radcliffe Hospital.
John Thaw died on 21 February, 2002, seven weeks after his 60th birthday, the day after he signed a new contract with ITV. At the time of his death he was living at his country home, near the villages of Luckington and Sherston in Wiltshire.
He was cremated in a private service in Westerleigh, near Yate in South Gloucestershire. A memorial service was held on 4 September, 2002, at St Martin-in-the-Fields church in Trafalgar Square. The service was attended by 800 people, including: Charles, Prince of Wales (now His Majesty King Charles III), Richard Attenborough, Tom Courtenay and Cherie Blair.

Manchesters' reviews of Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons are in!
And it is truly amazing how much better, and more accurate they are than the nonsense written by London critics.
Lemons wrapped its London run at the Harold Pinter theatre on Saturday, and started its first show at the Manchester Opera House yesterday. Here are some of the reviews I've seen:
If you read any review, read this one. It is by far and away the best, most detailed, and most accurate of all the reviews I've read. It really gives you an understanding of what the play is about, and what it is like to see it.
"With Rourke’s direction, Jenna Coleman and Aiden Turner are able to not only sit comfortable with silence themselves but make an entire audience comfortable with it too and hold that audience in the palm of their hand.  You could hear a pin drop!  Together, Coleman and Turner are utterly charming.  They depict romance and love with an adorable and natural ease, creating a warm fuzzy glow in the theatre.  However, when their relationship is tested, they create a palpable tension and static friction.  As words become limited, their use of body language and nonverbal communication is something to behold, with every intention, every nuance being crystal clear.  Coleman is fierce yet tender and moving.  Turner is charismatic and confident, yet equally vulnerable.  They have both created real, complex, pandora’s box, self-contradicting people, and it is why the audience left feeling like these are people we know.  They play comedy, romance, heartache, and conflict, all within this one act play and it is one heck of a tangy slice they serve up!"  "Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons Lemons highlights that when you’re forced to say less, it makes you consider what you say, and how you say it.  It examines how silence, expression, eye contact and body language are powerful tools of communication.  Plus, it has Jenna Coleman and Aiden Turner!  I mean, come on!  What more could you want?!"
🍋🍋🍋🍋
"If anyone has any sense, [Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner] will be snapped up to combine their considerable talents in the same small screen show because they are a dream team."
🍋🍋🍋🍋
"Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner fizz and shine in this musing romantic comedy, written by Sam Steiner."
🍋🍋🍋🍋
"Turner and Coleman’s chemistry is undeniable as their characters struggle with what to say, how to say it and how to express themselves when unable to say anything at all."

Oh, to be "Mr Manchester" who just used to casually run into James Maxwell "most evenings" in 1986. (Courtesy of the British Newspaper Archive & the Manchester Evening News).
"Whom do I see strolling through Manchester late on most evenings but James Maxwell, actor and artistic director, whose craggy features are well-known through countless film, television and stage roles.
"I walk home from work at the Royal Exchange Theatre to my urban paradise," he explains, "paradise" being a flat above the Arndale Centre.
"I love it," he says, "but no one living there can be accused of having a morbid interest in old architecture."
One of his many showbiz tales is of when he was in a show at Manchester Opera House in 1953. The scenery didn't work - in fact, some of it fell down - and the distinguished knight playing the lead not only didn't know his lines; at times he didn't know when he had to speak.
The audience was cool, to say the least, and at the end the knight decided he should speak to them.
"I apologise for the mistakes duing the evening," he announced grandly, "but I assure you that everything will be put right by the time we open in London."
Tumblr media
& Mr Manchester, at the G-Mex, "jokingly suggested this wasn't [James Maxwell's] kind of theatre.
His instant retaliation would have gladdened G-Mex boss Tony Harrison, sitting along my row. "No, It's everyone's theatre," he retorted.

Souce: the Universal Weekly, 8 May 1926
London Showing Gala Event of Film Season The London showing was in the London Hippodrome, April 9th, and was by far the gala event of the current film season in London. The picture is in twenty-two reels and was shown at a double session, each session including eleven reels. This was a decided novelty for the British filmmen and reviewers, yet was accepted with favor and even enthusiasm. It is considered likely that the American presentation of the big French film will conform to this method.
The trade showing tour of the picture which followed the London showing was as follows: West End Cinema, Birmingham, April 11th; Theatre Royal, Manchester, April 12th; Grainger Picture House, Newcastle, April 13th; Theatre Royal, Glasgow, April 14th; Briggate Picture House, Leeds, April 15th; Trocadero, Liverpool, April 16th, and Park Cinema, Cardiff, April 17th. The London Hippodrome showing was marked by unusual ceremonies and celebrations. An elaborate prologue, hailed as one of the finest ever seen in England, preceded the picture. In it many of the principal actors and actresses of the film appeared in person. Included in the prologue were the following French film favorites, who made a special trip from Paris for the opening: Sandra Milowanoff, who plays Fantine; Andree Rolane, who plays Cosette; Jean Toulout, who plays Javert; Paul Jorge, who plays Mgr. Myriel; G. Saillard, who plays Thenardier; N. Saillard, who plays Eponine and Renee Carl who has the role of La Thenardier. In the prologue, these players broke through the pages of a big book and marched across the stage before the sleeping figure of Victor Hugo. Prominent International Figures Attend
A number of the officials and executives of the Societe des Cineromans also were present from Paris, including Jean Sapene, proprietor of Le Matin and director general of the Societe; Louis Nalpas, art director of the Societe; Henri Fescourt, who produced "Les Miserables," and others of similar importance. Amie de Fleureau [sic], French Ambassador to England, was present at the showing, with other prominent Frenchmen now in England, including Marcel Knecht. The French Ambassador, the officials of the Cineromans, members of the cast and many prominent Britons were guests at a banquet held the same evening in the Hotel Metropole, London. Ambassador de Fleureau, Sapene, Nalpas and Knecht sent the following cable to Carl Laemmle during the dinner: "After the splendid and unequalled presentation of 'Les Miserables' at the Hippodrome today to enthusiastic elite of England in the presence of the Ambassadors from Japan, Belgium, Brazil; the Ministers from Greece, Portugal, Norway, Finland and Lithuania; after this most cordial banquet uniting two hundred British-American-French leading journalists, we wish to congratulate warmly and to thank Universal and yourself for most efficient demonstration of Franco-American friendship for the betterment of peace." The cable also contained high praise for James V. Bryson, general manager of the European Motion Picture Co., Ltd., Universal's distributors in the British Isles. Bryson and his aids have had most to do with the acquisition of "Les Miserables" by Universal and for the elaborate presentation it has just received overseas. Cables of gratitude and praise also were sent to Laemmle from the Mayor of Nancy, France, the home of Hugo's father, and from the Mayor of Besancon, where Hugo was born. Score and Story of Picture Broadcast In connection with the Hippodrome presentation, the British National Opera Orchestra of fifty pieces was used to supply the musical background of the picture.
The entire score, together with the story of the picture, was broadcast by radio. It has been estimated that four million radio fans listened-in on this music program. Following the London presentation the orchestra was used for the various provincial trade showings. [. . .] Other Cities Equally Enthusiastic [. . .] Definite information as to whether "Les Miserables" would be released in America the same way as in England — in two parts of eleven reels each, totaling a four-hour show — could not be obtained this week at the Universal Home Office where it was said that this method was under serious consideration, but that no decision had yet been made.  It was pointed out that several other methods of presenting the entire twenty-two reels offer themselves. One of these would be to run the first eleven reels in the afternoon and the second part in the evening. Another way would be to run one part in one theatre and the other in another theatre day and date. Still a third way would be to run the first part the first half of the week and the second part the last half.  One thing is practically certain. Carl Laemmle, rather than sacrifice any of the dramatic thrills and entertainment value to be found in the full-length version, means to present it as it stands. It is of interest that the second half is almost a complete story in itself and with a short foreword for the purpose of introducing the characters and outline the elements of the preceding action, might conceivably stand on its own feet.  It is understood that Laemmle is seeking the advice of many exhibitors, newspaper reviewers and others on the perplexing subject of how to release "Les Miserables." Meanwhile, Universal is going ahead with plans to launch the big Universal-Film de France with an advertising, publicity and exploitation campaign that will dwarf that done for such previous Universal super-pictures as "The Hunch- back" and "The Phantom."

Another review for the Manchester run. This one includes the reviewer expressing his hope that Jenna Coleman and Aidan Turner are paired up again soon in a TV show or something. From what little I’ve seen (National Theatre Live - listen to the tapping foot) they do seem to have great chemistry together!

MONKEE BUSINESS THE MUSICAL, featuring exotic locations, far out cars, groovy spies and The Monkees’ biggest hits, is swinging into the Manchester Opera House for its world premiere, follwed by performances at the Glasgow Kings Theatre and Sutherland Empire.
Take a look at the Monkees production shot below!
It’s the story of four innocent boys who fall prey to an evil record producer and are tricked into impersonating one of the biggest bands in the world. As they struggle to conceal their own personalities, a frantic world tour leads to entanglements with a harem of sexy Russian spies, an army of Tower Beefeaters and a railway carriage full of nuns.
From the producers of Chitty Chitty Bang Bang and Spamalot, Monkee Business the Musical will pay homage to both the crazy chaos of the Emmy Award winning TV series and the brilliant music of The Monkees featuring hit after hit including I’m A Believer, Last Train to Clarksville, Hey, Hey We’re The Monkees and the smash hit Daydream Believer alongside many more iconic songs from the era like My Boy Lollipop and You Don’t Have to Say You Love Me.
Made instant world-wide stars by the famous 1960s TV series, The Monkees, made up of Manchester-born Davy Jones, Micky Dolenz, Peter Tork and Michael Nesmith, became one of most successful bands of their generation – at one time even outselling The Beatles and The Rolling Stones – releasing 121 songs on nine albums and influencing many future artists.
The cast includes: Ben Evans (Chuck – posing as Davy Jones), has a wealth of West End credits already including Jersey Boys, Les Miserables, Olvier! Mamma Mia! and The Lord of the Rings; Oliver Savile (William – posing as Peter Tork), after graduating made his professional debut in the UK tour of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat and has recently been touring the world in the international tour of Mamma Mia!; Stephen Kirwan (Andy, posing as Micky Dolenz) made his West End debut in Cameron Macintosh’s Mary Poppins. He has also toured the UK in Fiddler on the Roof and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Most recently Stephen has appeared as Claude in the European tour of Hair; and Tom Parsons (Mark – posing as Mike Nesmith) has appeared in the West End in Mamma Mia! and most recently as Nicky/Trekkie in Avenue Q.
Joining Ben, Oliver, Stephen and Tom in Monkee Business the Musical, playing the role of the boys’ unscrupulous manager Joey Finkelstein will be the extremely familiar face of Linal Haft. Linal – most recently seen as Harry Gold in Eastenders – has a wealth of theatre, film and television credits to his name. Theatre includes Slaughter City (RSC), Happy Birthday Brecht (National Theatre), The Old Neighbourhood (The Royal Court) and most recently the award winning Burlesque at Jermyn Street Theatre. TV includes Minder, Shine on Harvey Moon, Great Expectations, Vanity Fair, Rome and the aforementioned Eastenders with films including Moulin Rouge.
Monkee Business the Musical is written by Peter Benedict (Naked Flame, Fire Down Under, Deadlock), directed by David Taylor (Cats, The Prisoner of Second Avenue), choreographed by David Morgan (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) and produced by the madcap Michael Rose Ltd in conjunction with the seriously-off=the-wall Ambassador Theatre Group.
Monkee Business is premiering at the Opera House as part of Manchester Gets It First, Ambassador Theatre Group’s commitment to making Manchester the UK’s official city for launching theatre’s biggest and best new musicals, a scheme which has won the backing of the city council. Ghost the Musical was the first MGiF show, and last month saw the second, the record-breaking All New People – written by and starring Zach Braff.
The Manchester run of Monkee Business The Musical will be dedicated to Davy Jones, a wonderfully talented musician whose songs brought happiness to millions of people around the world.
