Top Ten Least Bad Outfits in TNG

I'm gonna be honest and say that the non-uniform outfits in TNG are not my favorite costume design in the world, but there are some looks that stick with me:

10. That Girl Who Kissed Data That One Time's Outfit:

I can never decide if I like this look or I think it's ugly, but I love the pants and tall boots combo. Her blouse is bad and the bouclé jacket is both too heavy and too fussy for this outfit, but I love the belt and suspenders combo, and the chevron embossing on the suspenders. This costume and all the others except #9 is a Robert Blackman design.

9. This Jumpsuit On That Girl From "The Dauphin":

This is the only William Ware Theiss design on this list. I love his TOS stuff but most of his TNG designs leave me cold 🤷‍♀️. But I love this is extremely 80s jumpsuit. Love the pretty drape, love the ruching on the sleeves, love the harem pants silhouette. Only note is that the whole bodice should be a structured corset bodice instead of the kind of odd structured panel it has now.

8. Picard's Shorty Pyjama Set:

TNG is absolutely full of the strangest pyjama choices you can imagine and Picard is no exception but I love this bold look. Would kill for this pyjama set. He also takes a work zoom wearing this one time which is insane.

7. Data's 1890's Looks But Specifically This One With The Shirtsleeves And The Blue Shirt:

The best part of "Time's Arrow" is that Data isn't a fish out of water in the 1890s, he's absolutely killing it, and I love that the only real Casual Data look we get is this one. I prefer the blue shirt to the pink because Data should really wear more blue, it's a nice contrast with yellow. Please also note his emerald watch fob, which was 0% necessary to blend in, he's just having fun with it.

6. 12 Year Old Keiko's Linen Overalls:

The paperbag waist! The bow! The little bows at the shirt cuffs! I can understand why she replicated a miniature copy of this outfit.

5. Beverly and Guinan's Dixon Hill Holodeck Costumes:

I'm counting these as one because they're essentially the same design in different color pallets but what color paletts! Bev is pulling off the very difficult pink+red+red hair and the mint green on Guinan is 🤌. I particularly love how Guinan's hat is so 1940s yet also echos the silhouette of her usual costume.

4. Deanna's Teal Dress:

Like all of you I prefer Deanna in the uniform, but this dress slays, ok? The space age asymmetrical neckline. The drop waist. The structured bodice. The slit almost all the way to the hip. And of course the matching tights and shoes CANNOT BE BEATEN. Also one time I saw a dude on a Star Trek forum call this a "ballgown" which baffles me to this day, this is clearly a slightly fancy day dress.

3. Picard's 1890s Look:

You'd think Picard would go full posh in the 1890s but instead he gives us this working-class Shakespearean director look and he 👏 looks 👏 incredible 👏. Way to mix textures, Jean-Luc.

2. Lore's Turtleneck and Giant Vest:

You and I know that Lore stole these clothes from the Pakleds because we pay a lot of attention to Star Trek costumes, but to a normal viewer Lore shows up and this is just his outfit!! It's giving, like, space-age goblincore and it's incredible. I want wear this oufit every day. I want to make a little doll Lore wearing this outfit to express my love for it. It's only not #1 because the pants are too orange and a strange weave.

Deanna's Ancient West Holodeck Outfit:

Deanna!!! The pants! The hat! The calico! She looks 10/10 hot in this outfit. For sure the superior version of this is before she gives her neckerchief to Worf (it really benefits from that cool highlight) but either way this is the best anyone's ever looked on that holodeck.

I don’t care that it’s manga-faithful, the Bleach’s anime color-choices are far superior than the manga and fixing these “mistakes” now after 20 years is so unnecessary and kinda ruin the nostalgia.

Rangiku having blonde hair and blue eyes is too on-the-nose wen it comes to a character that is supposed to be very conventionally-attractive and she ends up looking like a different person now, light orange hair and grey eyes are a much interesting combo for me.

Nel having teal hair looks way better than manga Nel whose hair is the same exact shade of green as her clothes.

Having the snake’s skull in Renji’s Bankai be white looks more pleasing than for it to be the same yellowish-brown color as the rest of the Bankai (and his fur being pink matches the Bankai much more than green fur)

And I didn’t know this but apparently Ichigo’s Getsuga is supposed to be white+black and NOT red+black? I mean it looks pretty, but the red+black Getsuga is so iconic so it feels weird to change it now after all these years.

So for yellow i like bright yellow the best currently (like, lemon-colored), but i also really like (most ?) warmer shades of yellow a lot, especially camel (the kind that has brown in it but is still decisively yellow if that makes any sense lmfao, i don't know if i should call it camel or ocher actually)

For clothes i adore olive tweed, like tweed is already everything but in this color it's just... superior. My dream is to have a full suit like that one day, for i am a butch and sometimes i too want to look, you know, dapper. I also like puffer jackets in bright colors, in a matte finish (very specific i know). I have a bright red one that i love, i just love how it looks like plastic you know, like you just want to, sink your teeth in it if that makes any sense lmfao. Then for interiors i am very obsessed with bright colored metals, again in matte, like a locker type material ? i just love bauhaus design so yeah. I like dark wood, beige paper (japanese paper, kraft paper), beige seaweed carpets (my absolute favorite thing, it's my favorite smell too and it's just.. so parisian for some reason). I also like colored acrylic a lot right now, again with the plastic theme haha. Oh and i like red paint. Just clumps of red. Very satisfying for some reason.

21. What colors go best with black, in your opinion ?

So. Black is a problem for me, in clothes specifically. Because the thing is, I love black, a lot, most of my clothes are black, but i don't like how it looks with other colors, especially the bright colors that i love. Like : black + yellow = bees so no, nothing against bees but i don't want to look like one, black + orange = halloween, which is fine but like on halloween, black + red = punk which, love it but it's just not my aesthetic, etc etc etc. So basically all i really like with black is beige, and more black. (and i tolerate neutrals like grey, navy blue..). It's a mindfuck, i hate it.

28. Are you superstitious about color ? 

Not at all ! But i'm low-key fascinated by the concept. For the anecdote my cousin's wife is terrified of green, she thinks it's bad luck. And it became a problem when my aunt and uncle built a house in l'île de Ré like the bourgeois they are, because painting your shutters green is mandatory on the island (like, by law, which is crazy). So they had to find the right shade of green that was as close as grey as possible, or else she wouldn't come, nor bring her children. So wild and hilarious to me.

30. Do you or have you ever experienced color-related synesthesia ? Tell us about it.

Never !! And i'd love, love to meet someone who has (naturally or you know, drug-induced). I have met a person with synesthesia once, i think she could, taste sounds if i remember well. Synesthesia is just, one of the most fascinating things ever.

38. Thoughts on purple ? 

I'm not a fan of purples and pinks. Like i don't hate every shade of purple and pink, but at best it just does nothing for me. Obviously it's because i associate them with femininity and i'm, you know, wildly uncomfortable with femininity. For purple specifically there's also the fact that a lot of the shades have a cool undertone, which i find depressing. But, in very rare cases i can in fact tolerate purple. For example I like the combination of green and purple a lot, precisely because it's unexpected and completely devoids purple of it's girly connotation, in my opinion. I even own a button up that has purple on it and that i quite like ! It's a surprisingly bright, even sunny shade of purple and it's combined with orange and blue, and i don't think it looks feminine because of that and also because it's clearly a masculine cut so yeah, i like wearing it. In conclusion i have complicated feelings about purple as you can see lmfao

OKAY so first off i want to establish that i'm just some guy with a blog, not in any way an expert at character design or color theory. so if i come off like a total idiot here that's because i am, but:

as an individual character, I actually really love Sam's color palette! the green/purple/black is a great combo for her; those were basically the quintessential "goth girl" colors for character design at that point. (See: Raven from Teen Titans, Gwen from Total Drama, Shego from Kim Possible, this meme and many equivalents). Purple is a good color for evoking mystery, superiority, and darker femininity, while green connects to her more earthy, nurturing side. It suits her well!

My main issue is that it just does not make a ton of sense in terms of the show's overall color scheme. None of the other major human characters use a similar color scheme to her, and in fact tend to avoid purple completely! (Outside of a few outfits: Paulina's swimsuit, Valerie's shirt from SoG) It's an odd situation where there are plenty of background humans in purple or green, but the important characters - the trio, the popular kids, the Fentons - are almost all in red/yellow/oranges, blues, and the occasional pink. Here's a hastily thrown together lineup for reference:

Her color scheme is way more in line with the colors they typically use to indicate ghosts and ghost weirdness, as Technus demonstrates here:

It becomes especially apparent in when it's her, Tucker, and Danny in Phantom form:

(It's interesting that Tucker is so incongruent in this image with an otherwise very unified color scheme, and yet still manages to fade into the background thanks to everything else - composition, perspective, lighting, action - being weighted so heavily in Danny's favor)

"Hey boneheat," you might be saying, "of course Sam stands out from the other human characters. Going against the norm and not being like the other girls is a big part of her character!"

To which I would say: yes! Totally. But she doesn't actually stand out as much from the background human characters (who like I mentioned, wear green and purple in similar shades a decent amount), as she does from Danny and Tucker.

There's basically no overlap between her and the other two, who are supposed to be her fellow outcasts and best friends, and have the red connecting them. (I guess there's the green of Tucker's cargo shorts, but. Stretch.) The colors fail to reinforce this connection between the three, and instead code her as an antagonistic force, or someone who's more connected to Phantom and the other ghosts than her own friends. Which: if you asked certain fans, they would agree with those interpretations! But they certainly weren't the intent of the character designers.

I'm still figuring out how I want to resolve it. My first thought was limiting the purple in her wardrobe and emphasizing colors that connect to Danny and Tucker, but it's such an iconic aspect of her character that is feels almost blasphemous. So it might be a better idea to instead add more purple/green/black to the other two's looks, in order to establish the three of them as outcasts with a ghost connection. I think the color schemes for ghost weirdness is one of the best things this show has going for it, so I don't plan on changing that!

Fires begin rapidly spreading outside. The four go to see what's the cause of the fires. The fires begin subsiding revealing... Bowser! With an entire army of Goombas and Koopa Troopas!

Much to none of their surprise. Same old, same old, Bowser showing up to kidnap Peach scheme. Every princess present has a deadpan look at whose responsible.

Bowser is ready to breath another torrent of fire, only for his fire breath to shoot off in the direction of his minions. Bowser does this a couple more times, still hitting his troops.

Meanwhile, Daisy brings the entire dinner table outside, for them to watch in entertainment and laugh at Bowser's antics.

Bowser stops in a mixture of anger and puzzlement. Also because most of his army is now gone or lying covered in soot.

A couple of Goombas begin poking his stomach in confusion, only for them and Bowser to be blasted away from an unexpected, giant ball of fire. Sending them flying across the countryside.

Before Bowser's remaining troops can try to kidnap Peach and hurt the other princesses, a wall of fire is raised blocking them from entry. The fires subside revealing Blaze the Cat coming to their defense.

BLAZE BURNS AS BRIGHT AS HER SOL!

The trailer ends with Peach, Rosalina, Zelda and Daisy asking Blaze to come sit with them, with Blaze being shy to join their tea party. Daisy pulls her over and plants in her in what used to be her chair. Before Blaze can ask where she'll sit, the Princess of Sarasaland casually pulls Bowsers burning, unconscious body over and uses it as a chair. The four laugh, with Blaze looking at all of them, feeling a sense of welcoming and tenderness from their fond smiles. She joins in on the laughter.

Side Tilt: Blaze will backhand her foes, pushing them back keeping distance from them. Her hand is on fire.

Up Tilt: Blaze will do a burning spin kick, that can spike foes when timed correctly.

Down Tilt: Blaze sweep the ground, hurting foes. Not a strong attack, but it leaves a small patch of fire that hurt foes.

Dash Attack: Blaze will twirl gracefully across the stage, surrounding herself in fire, racking up damage from foes caught in the fires.

Neutral Air: Blaze will burst with fire around her body, spiking foes if timed correctly.

Side Air: Blaze swipes with her hands, firing multiple embers in different directions.

Back Air: Blaze elbow jabs in the opposite direction, dealing minor knock back.

Up Air: Blaze fires a ball of fire upwards, which will rack up multiple hits on an opponent, before blowing up.

Down Air: Blaze shoots a smaller ball of fire, that can spike opponents if done right.

Side Smash: Blaze fires a series of fire pillars, that sends foes into the air.

Up Smash: Blaze calls upon the Power of the Stars, via the Jeweled Scepter, pushing opponents away if they are above Blaze and caught in a series of floating stars.

Down Smash: Blaze strikes the ground with the Jeweled Scepter, leave a starry themed portal on the map. The player can leave up to three. All five Precures have gathered so it’s time for the final character introduction of the show (for a while), a little elaboration on backstory, and establishing our base of operations. So let’s dive in!

The Plot

Coco decides he needs a new place to stay after a close encounter with Nozomi’s mom, and at school the girls have trouble finding time to talk about Precure business without being pulled away by classmates. They still need to open the Dream Collet and awaken Coco’s sleeping friend, so they sneak into the Student Council room and do that. They bring their Pinkie Catches together and the Collet opens, and out comes a brown and tan squirrel fairy with an orange tuft of hair named Nuts!

Nuts initially doesn’t trust the girls and is upset at Coco’s lack of discretion, and he remains cold and belligerent throughout the episode. On the walk home, the girls discuss their need for a new place to gather, and Karen brings up that her family has a lot of unused storage units and warehouses, so they go to check one out. They finally settle on a modestly sized house that they begin to clean up. They horse around a little, and Nuts is still moping, but he tells Nozomi how to transfer a Pinky from her Pinky Catch to the Dream Collet for safe keeping.... just in time for Girinma to show up and steal both the Dream Collet and Nuts, who has a death grip on it.

The girls chase him, and he lures them to a warehouse where he turns a pile of teddy bears into a giant teddy bear kowaina. After some banter, he realizes that Nuts is the fairy who opened the gates to the Palmier Kingdom and let Nightmare in, after he had disguised himself as an injured Pinky. Nuts manages to escape and Cure Dream insists that he didn’t do anything wrong, that Nightmare are the bad guys for preying on his kindness. The five girls all reiterate that their dream is to restore Palmier Kingdom for him, and he finally warms up to them. The cures knock out Girinma and defeat the Kowaina in a fantastic combo, and the villain retreats.

The next day, the girls visit the house again, only to find it has been completely redecorated inside and out, with signs calling it NattsHouse and filled with fashion accessories for sale. A tan-skinned blonde man approaches them, and Rin, Komachi, and Karen all crush on him a little before Coco reveals that this is Nuts’s human form. Nuts offers Coco a place to stay in the house and we end on a lovely still frame of the seven of them.

The Analysis

The need for a gathering spot is pretty mundane but it’s yet another thing that will become a trend in the franchise. You could argue that the restaurants in the FW shows served this purpose, but they would just as often meet at each other’s houses, or a park, or school, because it was easier with just the two of them. With five girls all being involved in different activities, it’s inevitable that they’re going to get pulled away from time to time when they’re at school. I appreciate that they spend an episode actually hashing this out rather than just landing on a place. There’s still some hand-waving involved, like how the heck did Nuts get all the products he’s selling in the store, how did he make custom signs overnight, things of that nature, but at least they didn’t just land in a magic library that they forget about halfway through the show.

There’s also some fun comedy involved in finding the hangout. Karen, being the rich one, brings them to a spacious warehouse, with the implication that her family owns all of the ones in the complex. All the girls agree that this is too large, which is when she brings them to the “small” storehouse that will become NattsHouse. Karen comments that it’s awfully small, which has everybody looking at her kinda shocked, and Rin points out that it’s bigger than her own house. Later, when they’re cleaning the place up, Komachi discovers a lizard and shows it to her best friend, freaking Karen out big time.

Komachi insists that it’s so adorable, and the whole gag is ripped straight out of FWPC17:

It’s a fun joke and I don’t mind them reusing it, but it’s funny since I observed previously that both Komachi and Karen have attributes of Honoka. Also it’s fun to see Karen coming out of her shell and losing her composure. It makes her seem more relatable to know that she’s so easily fussed.

On the serious side, it’s a great introduction to Nuts. He’s been built up as Coco’s best friend so you’d expect him to be kind and approachable like Coco but the first thing he does is slap Coco with his tail and berate him. Nuts is upset at Coco and doesn’t like the girls at first, even chastising Nozomi for taking her Pinky Catch off for a minute to wash her hands, but the girls are sympathetic and so is the audience after learning his backstory. When Girinma reveals that Nightmare took advantage of his kindness to to take over the Palmier Kingdom, Nozomi is righteously mad and she protects Nuts while delivering a fantastic speech about how awful it was that they’d prey on someone’s good nature like that. Nozomi standing up for him and defending him, explaining that it wasn’t his fault, and then promising to revive the Palmier Kingdom with Coco and the other girls is a great bonding moment, and that’s when he turns around and yells at Girinma that he believes in Precure. He’s a more cynical character than the optimistic Coco, which balances them out, but it’s not the last time it will cause some strife.

I didn’t really have space to bring it up in the summary, but we get to see how two-faced Bunbee is in this episode. He’s standing around the office trying to figure out how he should report his failures to the higher-ups, and he probably isn’t even going to say anything, but then one of the masked people at the table stands up and reveals himself to be Kawarino, Bunbee’s superior. (etymology: Kawaru means “change”, like how he disguised himself) Bunbee’s arrogance turns to stammering as he’s clearly unsettled by Kawarino’s presence and thinly-veiled threats to his competency.

As soon as Kawarino leaves, Girinma climbs out of the trap door pit and Girinma blames him for being chewed out, then sets him to work.

Speaking of the villains, I just want to say that Girinma’s attack at the soon-to-be NattsHouse was pretty intense. He appeared out of nowhere, knocked Coco back, and nabbed the Dream Collet in no time. His only mistake was in taunting the girls to try to get it back from him, rather than just disappearing back to Nightmare to hand it to Bunbee.

Other notable scenes: in the beginning, Coco tries to wake up Nozomi so they can get the others and revive Nuts. He takes his human form to do this, and Nozomi’s mother walks in to see a strange man standing over her daughter.

She closes the door, does a double take, and opens it back up, trying to get an answer from Nozomi, who takes a minute to realize what has happened, but she convinces her mom she was just seeing things. Also, Nozomi’s sleepy face is absolutely adorable, and in general she looks good with her hair down.

In this episode, Nozomi is formally elected as the leader of the team, after they all, even Karen, agree that they wouldn’t have become Precures without her. We also see her transfer a Pinky from the Pinky Catch to the Dream Collet in great detail, no doubt highlighting the interactive features of the two toys. However, it’s done pretty fluidly, and the design and functionality of the Dream Collet are less obtuse than some other toys we’ve seen. It slides open to reveal a screen inside, and there’s a stylus you can use to play some simple games. Not as fancy as the actual computer from Splash Star.
