“Ozzy.” She’s not even mad, just disappointed that he got the same score as someone who Miranda doesn’t even know.
...... But maybe she’s asking too much. She sighs, and pins her fins back, and finally relents, “..... Well, at least you have managed to make it to the top of the board regardless, and you are the only one who knows my favorite color.”

Wicked And Worldbuilding (One Short Day)
The medicine journey is a stock storyline across a ton of literature and mythology. It's the hero's journey, but broader. The protagonist must go to a place (physical or metaphorical) to retrieve a thing (the medicine) and return home. Sometimes the medicine is enlightenment, or a secret suitcase with the MacGuffin the spies are all after, or even literally just medicine. The story focuses in on this journey.
The Wizard Of Oz follows this plot in a roundabout way, and its prequel, Wicked looks like it is doing the same. But Wicked is a satire, and so it takes this plot and twists it in a different direction. Before it can do that, however, it needs to plant its heroes in a new location.
Enter One Short Day, a song that is essentially just a transition piece to show the audience that the geography has changed. But this song manages to do a lot of worldbuilding for this place, and for some of the people who reside in it.
Let me explain.
SPOILERS AHEAD: (Wicked, Annie)
Tumblr media
So... the Emerald City is New York City. Not explicitly, this isn't like Aslan, and the argument for the metaphor is shaky. I'm talking about vibes here.
Speaking as a non-American, New York has the stereotype of being "the big city", the place that is fast moving and cosmopolitan and chaotic in that way that you can't help but love. I don't know how well it lives up the image, but I'm guessing it's slightly more complicated.
Tumblr media
Anyway, that's what Oz is, that stereotype, but with complications. And just like any stereotype, the closer you look to it, the more it diverges, and we will get to that.
But first, you know why I associate this stereotype with New York? And why I associate the Emerald City with that stereotype? Annie, which has this exact song, but for New York.
For those who don't know, Annie is a 1977 musical and a half decent 2014 film about a billionaire named Oliver Warbucks who adopts an orphan for the hell of it. There is a lot more to it, but you don't need to know that for this post.
Tumblr media
During the story, Warbucks decides to show Annie around New York, and the audience is treated to a song called N.Y.C, which has lyrics like this:
"The city's bright As a penny arcade It blinks, it tilts, it rings." "To think that I've lived here all of my life And never seen these things"
Compare that to the following from One Short Day:
"There are buildings tall as quoxwood trees" "Dress salons" "And libraries" "Palaces!" "Museums!" "A hundred strong" "There are wonders like I've never seen" "It's all grand" "And it's all green" "I think we've found the place where we belong!"
Tumblr media
So, there's very much a common link between the two. You, the audience, are supposed to feel awe for this new place. The characters are small fish in the sea and everything has a sense of wonder.
But did you catch Annie's line in N.Y.C? "I've lived here all my life and never seen such things." Annie has some themes that, while not the focus, are far from subtext. In this case, New York City is a great and wonderous place... for rich people.
Tumblr media
Wicked does this kind of thing a lot, because in this story, duality is a core tenet, and the first thing to talk about is the sycophantic nature of the citizens. Although that isn't exactly the truth, is it?
"Who's the mage Whose major itinerary Is making all Oz merrier? Who's the sage Who sagely sailed in to save our posteriors? Whose enthuse for hot air ballooning Has all of Oz honeymooning? Isn't he wonderful?"
This doesn't read to me like spontaneous love for a leader, especially since the Wizard is established later to be looking into improving efficiency through a system of spies, and his second in command is his press secretary. Is it that far out of the question that this might be, in some way, propaganda?
That reflects on to the rest of the song. Oz is wonderous, but it feels fake. The actors are playing characters who are putting on a show by everything they do. All the citizens of Oz are living in a delicate balance of seeking popularity and coveting the popular. Everything is fake, and the fact that the real-life actors manage to get that across intentionally is really impressive.
Tumblr media
I went to see the musical in Sydney twice (I knew one of the cast members), and the difference in performance between the first performance and the last was incredible. Not in terms of quality, but in terms of the emotions being conveyed. Most notably, Courtney Monsma's Glinda and Sheridan Adams' Elphaba changed from joy and wonder the first time, to the kind of disbelieving amazement of watching a drunk friend do something somehow both stupid as hell and genuinely impressive at the same time.
Tumblr media
"We're just two friends." "Two good friends." "Two best friends"
Ah yes, the totally platonic and completely "just friends" maneuver of immediately relocating your entire life after your friend quietly asks if you want to come with them.
It is also notable that Glinda is the one standing out in this place. This is Elphaba's world, and Glinda is highlighted in it in gold. Just something to point out.
Tumblr media
But, back to the worldbuilding, I think its important that Elphaba fits in here, because Wicked is a story about dreams and reality colliding, and part of that is Elphaba's dream of belonging, and freedom from ridicule. It feels important to the gut punch that she comes so unbelievably close to getting what she wants, but it isn't her that's the problem here, its the falseness of the Emerald City and Oz as a whole.
Tumblr media
"You look positively emerald."
Suddenly, Elphie is in a place where green is a compliment. This is the defining abnormality, the thing that everyone, even her father, used as an insult.
Tumblr media
And if you want something incredible to drive home this point, in the books, the Emerald City isn't even green. The outer wall is green, but the inside only looks that way because everyone is wearing mandatory tinted glasses make it look that way. The Emerald City's name is a lie. Everyone is just so caught up in the moment that they don't notice. It's like rose tinted glasses, but emerald.
The green-ness is actually fascinating, because the colour is usually associated with sickness and evil, but the story has been chipping away at that association through Elphaba's entire deal. So, the thematic of a specifically green city is confused, and I don't actually know what to take away from that.
Tumblr media
Also, the Wizard dancers look like... well I'm not going to explain what they look like because I want to keep this vaguely PG. But suffice to say this: It is a cool piece of visual storytelling that, under all the facade of heroism and wisdom and magic, the wizard is barely more than a bellend with a bow tie.
Tumblr media
Final Thoughts
I have a completely irrational love for this song, derived entirely from my time performing this musical back in high school. I was the guy at the end who shouted, "the wizard will see you now", and that's all it took to get me to like it.
The song still isn't my favourite, however. I'm going to keep y'all guessing about what that is until we get there.
Next week, I will be looking at Sentimental Man, a song that deconstructs the musical's idea of truth. So, stick around if that interests you.

I do often find Xander incredibly frustrating – especially in the high school seasons which I’m rewatching now – but I don’t particularly think the issue is that Xander is a “Whedon self insert” (whatever that means).  In fact, Xander is often at his worst in episodes written by people other than Joss Whedon, whether that’s Teacher’s Pet or The Pack or Bewitched, Bothered & Bewildered or Dead Man’s Party.  If the self-insert theory were true, wouldn’t that be the exact opposite? Or is the problem that Xander is a Marti Noxon self-insert too?
No, I think the problem is a lot simpler than that: I just don’t think the writers are very good at writing sympathetic teenage boys (which is why Oz is painfully underwritten and why Xander is … well).  And in particular I think that the writers really struggle to work out who Xander is (beyond being the token boy with no magical powers or super-strength) after Season 1.  Other than his unrequited attraction to Buffy, what does he want?  What motivates him?  I genuinely don’t think the writers have a consistent answer to this question yet, and although The Zeppo (which I’ve not quite gotten to on my current rewatch) will start to address this, I think they won’t really have one until Season 4 at the earliest.  Yes, there are fragments here and there that you can build on if you want – the hints that imply his parents are abusive, a suggestion that he looks up to Giles almost as much as Giles look down on him, the occasional moment you can claim as evidence that Xander might be attracted to men –  but if you do start building on those fragments you’re ultimately engaged in fanfiction as much as you are analysis of the actually-existing material.  The writers themselves hadn’t put in the work to make those pieces coalesce into something cohesive at this point in the show’s history (and some of those hints will never be developed further).
And the other problem, which isn't quite unique to Xander but probably affects him more than anybody else, is that the show is still mostly very episodic in these three seasons.   So – even when we’re clearly not supposed to approve of Xander’s actions – the show never really allows them to have any long-term negative consequences for him. (Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered might have Giles rage at Xander for trying to cast a love spell on Cordelia for a few minutes, but it still ends with Buffy cheerfully thanking him for not sexually assaulting her – despite his admission that “for a minute it was touch and go” –  and with the popular girl he was actively trying to take “revenge” on at the start of the episode deciding she’s so touched by the romanticism of this act that she’d rather be with him than worry about the good opinion of any of her friends.  And the events of the episode are never mentioned again.) So it’s very easy to get the impression that the writers don’t particularly think Xander’s doing anything wrong after all, even when I don’t think that’s the case.
Ultimately, I think you just have to accept that Buffy and Xander are close friends and that this friendship means a lot to both of them for the show to work, in much the same way you have to accept a lot of the show’s rather silly worldbuilding.  Which … is fine, really.  If I can accept a magical human-detecting chip in somebody’s head or Sunnydale’s ever-changing geography or the nonchalant way everyone in school reacts to their fellow students being violently killed on a weekly basis or any of the nonsense the show says about the Watcher’s Council I can, I suppose, accept a teenage girl with poor social skills and a reputation that makes her something of a social pariah becoming friends with a teenage boy who is mostly well-meaning but often kind of sucks.  This aspect of the high school seasons is perhaps a bit like the Season 6 issue of Willow and Tara living rent free at Buffy’s house while telling her she has money problems and has to get a job: in order to appreciate the show the way you’re meant to, you just have to handwave away a lot of what the writers actually show happening.

Some things I would've loved to see in early rwby (beacon volumes):
Extended staff at beacon with 1 or 2 of them being long retired huntsmen who far outlived the expected lifespan of huntsmen. The respect and vitriol they would receive from those around them who either marveled at their skill or believed them cowards who survived on their fear.
This extended staff also gives us insight into just how small the circle of people is that Ozpin actually keeps in the loop because most of the faculty I doubt would be aware of everything going on with Oz or at Beacon.
Weiss having a rivalry with Pyrrha (albeit one sided on Weiss' end because pyrrha never has to sweat) and one other student as they all compete for top scores in their class.
A map of the kingdom to give us a better layout and understanding of the distance between places and how long it would take to travel them.
Weiss and Yang having pretty big friend circles even if Weiss' are more superficial, so that when we see them compared to Ruby and Blake we get a real understanding of the difference in their social abilities. I don't need to know all the friends, maybe just some general comments about Weiss and Yang always being a bit busy or unavailable due to prior engagements.
Nora, Ren, and Pyrrha content that didn't just revolve around Jaune in early seasons. These could've been actual scenes or some cuts to us seeing the characters hanging out in town during a montage or something. Just making them feel more tied to the school and the kingdom.
The parents having a bit more of a presence in their lives; either through letters, messages, video calls, or school visits. Something that gives us an idea in the differences between the family dynamics of each character. That way when we finally see Weiss actively avoid speaking with her family/another character not even bother trying we can start piecing things together.
Mentions in passing of students dying on missions or going missing. This one is more bleak but it would help set things up more to understand the dangers and build up to Hazel in a way.
A history/geography class moment to help us as viewers understand the current government system in at least the kingdom of Vale and what it originated from.
For extra non main show stuff: I would've loved if they made world of remnant content for how marriages/death rituals/religion worked within remnant.
This is all from things that would fit into an unchanged canon, though there are things I'd add in to the canon as I've changed it.

Honestly, I have many questions about the Wicked films and I'm mostly content to reserve judgement and wait until I see them.
But I'm gonna need a map of Jon M Chu's Oz ASAP.
Mostly to explain this
Tumblr media
Did Nessa come to Shiz on a boat from Munchkinland??
Because looking at maps from the book and the musical, that isn't possible.
Which is fine if they're changing the geography, I just need to know what it is before I see the movie. Otherwise I will give myself a migraine trying to figure it out while watching.

Pirate-Son Bonding
on AO3
Category: one shot, fluff, Captain Cobra
Summary: While Emma enjoys a girl's night out, Killian and Henry have a boy's night of their own. Homework, movies and 'sword'fights included. Henry comes to an important realisation.
Word count: 1 695
Tumblr media
Henry glanced into the living room where Killian was sitting, buried in a book ever since Emma left for her girl's night out with Mary Margaret, Mulan and Ruby and Dorothy, who were visiting from Oz.
Henry started working on his homework when Emma left and Hook gave him his space, but still remained in his proximity on the other end of the open space of their ground floor. Somehow it felt nice to have company even though they were each doing their own thing. But when Henry started to lose his focus as the homework dragged on, his gaze started darting distractedly around the room and he noticed that every once in a while, Killian lifted his eyes from the pages he was reading to glance in his direction as if he was waiting for him to finish.
Henry took one of his earbuds out and tapped his pencil on the table. He smiled to himself and cleared his throat.
"Um, Hook?"
"Aye, Henry?" came his rather prompt response.
"I'm almost done with the homework. I was wondering if you could help me with it, maybe?"
Hook was already out of his armchair and ready to stride over to him, doing a poor job at hiding his excitement at being asked to help. At being asked to help him specifically, Henry realized with a sudden warm feeling.
"So," the pirate said, sitting down beside him at the kitchen table, "what sort of task do we have to resolve?"
"It's Geography," Henry said, pointing to the atlas. Hook's eyes lit up at the sight of it until he realized he was unfamiliar with most of the map, since he was not native to this world.
"Well, I suppose it's past time I learn more about this world's land and seas. What exactly do we have to do?"
"I have to fill in answers to these questions," Henry said, showing him the work sheet. "And memorize them for the test."
Killian examined the sheet with a concentrated look.
"Oh, we have to visit these places one day," he said quietly with a hint of old wanderlust.
"You wanna sail to the Caribbean?" Henry joked, doubtful that he would fully get the reference.
Killian searched the map with his eyes, until they landed on the mentioned sea.
"Sure. What's in the Caribbean?"
"I can't believe you haven't watched those movies yet. We have to fix that."
"If it's anything like that cursed drawing version of Peter Pan..."
"No," Henry laughed. "It’s life action. It's about pirates, has awesome music, great actors, iconic humor. You'll love it."
"If you say so," Killian shrugged. "But let’s get this done first, aye?"
"Ok. So... what is the highest peak of South America... that's this continent, by the way."
"Yeah, south of North America, I figured out that much, thank you," Hook responded defensively, a little offended.
"Right, sorry."
"I don't understand your technology, maps I get," he reminded him.
"Sorry," Henry smiled.
"Acon... Aconcagua? I think that's the one," Hook said pointing a finger to the tiny mountain symbol.
"Yeah, that's it," Henry nodded, trying to save its exact position in his memory. "Great. Now..."
Through their joint effort they finished the homework rather quickly. Finding specific places on the map turned out to be really fun when they turned it into a competition of who would find them quicker. Granted, Henry had an unfair advantage for already being familiar with most of it but Killian had a royal navy education and a long lifetime of experience up his own sleeve. Even when they were done with the assignment, Killian kept examining the map and they started talking about all the places they could visit in the summer. Henry realized that although he's been to Neverland, an alternate reality of the Enchanted Forest, Camelot and the Underworld, he has never been further than to New York when it came to his own world. The prospect of sailing to the Caribbean started to sound really appealing.
"We so have to watch the Pirates of the Caribbean!" Henry insisted. "You know what, I'll go find out which streaming service has it."
Killian, who was glad he knew what a streaming service was by now, just smiled and shrugged. "Alright then."
Henry collected his atlas and notes and rushed to the stairs before turning around. "Um, can you make some popcorn? It's not a proper movie night without snacks, you know."
"That's a rule in this household, I noticed."
"Yes. An important rule," Henry smirked.
"I'm on it," Hook nodded.
Henry ran up the stairs to get his mom's laptop, the password to which he has been granted access to. He was able to quickly find the first movie and signed up for a free trial he was sure to forget to cancel. When he descended the stairs to check on Hook, he found him chasing a grapefruit across the kitchen counter as it slipped from under his hook when he attempted to cut it.
"Um... Didn't I say popcorn?" he titled his head to a side.
"It's right there," Killian pointed to a steaming bowl of freshly microwaved popcorn. Next to it was another bowl full of curiously cut pieces of fruit.
"But I figured we could have some real food with it."
"Popcorn is real food," Henry protested. "It's made of corn. Corn is a vegetable. Conclusion: popcorn is a vegetable."
"I suppose you have a point," Killian laughed. "Popcorn gets a pass."
"But not pop tarts?" Henry crossed his arms.
"That awful prison food?" Killian frowned, completely serious.
"Why on Earth did I leave you in charge of snacks?" Henry wondered.
"Hey!"
"Anyway," he rolled his eyes and grabbed the bowl of the fragrant cheesy snack, "movie's ready."
Killian grabbed his unevenly chopped up fruit bowl and followed him.
"You know I'm not gonna get scurvy, right? It's not a common illness in this place and age," Henry nudged him with an elbow when they settled on the couch, the laptop positioned in front of them with the movie ready to play.
"I know, lad... I just, I've seen it. It's ugly," the pirate captain admitted solemnly.
Henry examined his face for a moment, while Hook just looked down with an apologetic smile. Henry couldn't help but wonder if he'd seen someone from his own crew succumb to the illness on the merciless seas. As annoying as it was, Hook's concern for his healthy diet came from a place of care. Didn't make it less annoying, though.
He cleared his throat and pressed play. "Okay. Movie time."
Killian was finally introduced to the character of Captain Jack Sparrow and as Henry expected, he found him quite likeable and amusing, even though he noted that if he had met him in real life, they might have ended up dueling each other. Now that was something Henry would pay to see.
When the movie was finished, they let the credits roll as Killian started recounting some of his own adventures from his early pirate days, long before he even set out on his quest for revenge on the Dark One.
At one point the story resulted in a duel against a captain of the royal navy, naturally. Killian was eager to show him exactly how it went down and decided a demonstration was necessary. He picked up some fireplace tools and got Henry to play the other guy.
"And then what?" Henry asked when his 'sword' was pointed at Hook's chest.
"Well, that's the twist. Then a giant kraken's tentacle rose up from the sea and snatched the unfortunate man right in front of me," he revealed.
"No way!" Henry shook his head incredulously.
"It's true! You should have seen the way the color drained from everyone's faces. The navy men started fleeing back to their ship, swinging over on ropes like frightened monkeys. We knew we had to run like hell. This creature could crush us into splinters. Luckily, the Jolly Roger is the fastest beauty on the seas."
"Oh, so you ran?"
"Excuse me, lad. I'd like to see you take your stand against a kraken! A captain knows when not to risk his crew's lives in vain. If I wanted to fight the infernal creature I could."
Henry laughed, lifting his free hand in surrender. A mischievous spark flashed in Hook's eyes and he struck out with his 'sword' at Henry in a way that allowed him to easily parry. The next blow was a bit more challenging, but Henry wasn't going to hold back either.
***
Emma didn't exactly have an expectation of what she would come home to at half past one in the morning, but her son battling Captain Hook in a ferocious duel with fireplace tools, jumping over the couch and nearly knocking everything over... was a surprise.
"I see you two are having a boy’s night of your own?" she chuckled, leaning against the door frame, crossing her arms.
When she spoke both of their heads turned to her with startled expressions that soon lit up.
"Mom!"
"You seem quite relaxed yourself, love," Killian smiled.
Henry sensed an opportunity and attempted to disarm his distracted opponent. But Hook never truly dropped his concentration and wasn't as overwhelmed as Henry needed him to be. With a skillful move and a grace of two hundred years of practice, Henry's weapon clattered to the floor instead.
"Now I could use a kraken," he sighed.
"Okay..." Emma furrowed her brow in amused confusion, "I'm going to bed. And you should too. You have school tomorrow, Henry."
"Yeah, I know," Henry sighed.
"Goodnight, mom," he said as he hugged her. He hesitated for a second before gathering the courage to turn to the pirate and reward him with a quick, sincere embrace too. "Goodnight, Killian."
The loving look in Hook's eyes, when he let him go and the corner of his mouth shot up in a tight half-smile, was something he knew he would treasure forever. He ran up the stairs before they finished bidding him goodnight too.
Yeah, he thought to himself, I guess I have a dad now.

CE Characters Favorite Disney Movies, Part II
Tumblr media
Pete Brenner
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Peter Pan. Released on February 3, 1953. Growing up, Pete always loved Peter Pan.
Tumblr media
Pete's Dragon. Released on November 3, 1977. This movie was one of the first movies that combined animation sequences with live action sequences. This makes sense that Pete would love a movie that has his name in it. Pete always felt that this movie was made just for him.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Mary Poppins. Released on August 27, 1964. It's one of the few movies where the movie is more well known than the book it's based on. P.L. Travers wrote the book, and had to be persuaded by Walt Disney to sell the film rights. The 2013 Disney movie Saving Mr. Banks is about this. Now, Mary Poppins is a much beloved Disney film, much like the Wizard of Oz. Dick Van Dyke, who plays Burt the Chimney Sweep, was also starring in his own sitcom, The Dick Van Dyke Show.
Pete very much loves Mary Poppins. This is his favorite comfort movie, he even watches it when he's sick. (Mine's A Christmas Story.) Now, Zoe and her sister, Mary, love it, and even sing along and dance to the songs.
Tumblr media
Tangled. Released on November 23, 2010. This is Zoe's favorite movie. Rapunzel is Zoe's favorite story, so it makes sense that Zoe loves Tangled. When Zoe wants to watch Tangled, she'll always say "Wapunzel!" She introduced this to Mary, and Mary says "Punzel!" when Mary is old enough to talk. Zoe and Mary will watch Tangled while eating their healthy snacks that are toddler and kid friendly.
Tumblr media
Cole Turner
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Sword in the Stone. Released on December 25, 1963. It also stars Alan Napier as the voice of Sir Pellnore. Alan Napier was also shooting the 1960's series Batman, which aired Saturday mornings on ABC. ABC is Disney owned. Cole can't understand why he's drawn to this, but he is. It's always been his favorite Disney movie, and yet he can't understand why.
Tumblr media
The Rescuers. Released on June 22, 1977. Bob Newhart was starring in the Bob Newhart Show. I even have a Little Golden Book of this movie.
This is another one of Cole's favorite movies that he never understood why he was drawn to, but now he knows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Rescuers Down Under. Released on November 16, 1990. I saw this in the theatre when I was 11. The late, great John Candy does the voice of Wilber. John Candy was a Canadian comedian, who was an alum of SCTV, with Eugene Levy and Catherine O' Hara.
Cole loves the sequel because he got to be your hero. He not only changed your flat tire, you got bitten by a poisonous snake when you were on a field trip on his farm with your students. He not only used his shirt as a tourniquet to stop the venom from spreading, he picked you up, carried you bridal style to his truck, and got you to the hospital quickly. Luckily, one of the dads on the trip happened to be a paramedic, and knew exactly what to do, and knew that an ambulance couldn't wait. He refused to leave your side. Cole took care of you even well after you were given the anti-venom. Cole treated you to a date night after that.
Lucas and Dawn love The Rescuers
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Ari Levinson
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Aladdin. Released on November 25, 1992. This is one of my favorite Robin Williams movies.
Aladdin reminds Ari of the time he once ran a resort. He now runs an import business, and some of the imports take him back to that place. He was also a geography teacher, and he would always talk about the time he once ran a resort when the kids studied and learned about the Red Sea, and the countries that surround it.
Tumblr media
Robin Hood. Released on November 8, 1973. Ari, Zachary and Elijah love this one. The boys can't understand how a fox is Robin Hood, but they love it. The boys are currently into animals, so they love movies that have anything to do with animals. Robin Hood is also their favorite story.
Tumblr media
Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl. Released on June 28, 2003. Ari loves this because Pirates of the Caribbean is his favorite Disney ride, and with him running his import business and the resort he ran, this hits a soft spot with him.
Tumblr media
Th Fox and the Hound. Released on July 10, 1981. This is another favorite with the Zachary and Elijah. Ari loves this one, too. It isn't strange for your three favorite guys to watch this movie, with a huge bowl of popcorn between the three of them, lemonades, and all of them curled up under a blanket, watching this movie. The boys even like to watch when they're sick.
Tumblr media
Lady and the Tramp. Released on June 22, 1955. This is Lillian's favorite. It's also a favorite of the boys. You put this on when Lillian would be teething, and she'd somehow forget about her teething pains. Zachary and Elijah and Lillian all watch this on movie night.
Tumblr media
Sleeping Beauty. Released on January 29, 1959. Ari has a soft spot for this one. This is his sister Andrea loved this one, and would often dress up as Aurora on Halloween. Lillian loves this one, too. It's another movie that you put on that helps her through teething pains. Ari and the boys get Lillian an Aurora stuffed doll for her first birthday.
Tumblr media
Zootopia. Released on March 4, 2016. Zachary, Elijah, Lillian, Ari and you love this one. The kids love animals, and they'll always pick out this one on family movie night. It's gender neutral enough where the boys enjoy it, and Lillian enjoys it.
Tumblr media
Frank Adler
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Cars. Released on June 9, 2006. Frank is a mechanic, so this movie makes sense for him. He loves it.
Tumblr media
Moana. Released on November 23, 2016. Mary loves this one. She's not sure why, though. Frank loves this one, too. He works with boats, and loves being near the water.
Tumblr media
Cinderella. Released on March 4, 1950. Mary loves this because she's treated less than. She just wants to feel beautiful even if it's just for one day.

Ok history/geography/culture lesson:
Kangaroos take the train because it's the most effect way of getting somewhere in a place as big and empty as Australia.
Our sheep cannot take the train as the vast majority of them are highland sheep which isn't accessible by train.
So the kangaroos drive the trains so they can control their public transport, the humans just hop on whichever train is the closest to the location they need (however you should consider investigating if Oz is human or kangaroo)

How To Throw a Last Supper Party
by Elise Letrondo
Holy Thursday is a day of religious reflection on Jesus’ last day before death. It is also the day we remember perhaps the most iconic dinner party in history: The Last Supper. It had everything that I seek in a soiree: carbs, alcohol, and accusations of betrayal. Believe me, I still think Jesus was greatly wronged by his friends and local government. But if we care enough to reenact the Nativity scene each December, we should also take time to echo Jesus’ effort at celebration and togetherness before his execution. I think The Last Supper says a lot about the kind of person Jesus was: casual, generous, and down as hell. So I’ve designed a party to emulate The Last Supper so that everyone, Christian or otherwise, can party like they’re dying tomorrow.
FOOD
As a raving charcuterie enthusiast, I can’t picture a party without some kind of meat and cheese assortment. Luckily, the diet of Biblical times consisted largely of meat and dairy from various livestock, so charcuterie kind of tracks historically as well as deliciously. I assembled a board with some ingredients that are loosely reminiscent of Biblical times and Jesus’ relative geography. And since Holy Thursday is also a Catholic reverberation of Passover, I should add that this party is a great opportunity to find and support your local Jewish market. Just don’t go there hungry because you will find yourself in the checkout line with three loaves of fresh challah bread and nothing on your original shopping list. Everything else pictured is from Trader Joe’s. Obviously.
Tumblr media
I used sheep and goat dairy for the cheeses, and included smoked fish and dried figs from the market. There are olives, dates, and hummus to round out the Middle Eastern vibe, though I’m realizing it is stupid to try to ethnify something as white as a Trader Joe’s charcuterie board. Blood oranges and endives add an elevated prettiness to distract you from the fact that you’re actually throwing a Holy Thursday party. Speaking of distraction, let’s move on to alcohol!
DRINK
“This is my blood of the covenant,” said Jesus, “which is poured out for many for the forgiveness of sins.”
Not to be that guy but I think if Jesus wanted to avoid sin, he shouldn’t have been passing around a cup of wine. I don’t drink much wine, as it causes me to turn red in the face and slide into the DMs of NBA players. If you’re like me and want a drink that packs the same punch as a robust merlot but tastes like a Capri Sun, I’ve crafted a signature cocktail for you to try this Holy Thursday. I call it “Blood of the Covenant”, and I think Jesus would have loved it.
4 oz cranberry juice cocktail (the sweet stuff, not the UTI stuff)
Juice of half a medium blood orange
1.5 oz vodka or gin
1 oz. Triple Sec
Club soda to finish
Tumblr media
I am as bad a food photographer as I am a mixologist, especially after sampling the drink for an hour before remembering to take a picture of it. But a little raw sugar and blood orange slice made it look slightly more presentable! Still, plain old wine is just as good and on-theme, and much less work. And as an unemployed thirty-three-year-old, I think Jesus would have appreciated less work. Cheers, and please pour out for the forgiveness of sins responsibly.
GAMES
“Judas”
Gather enough cups for each guest at your party. The cups must be opaque, and should be disposable as you’ll be writing inside them. With a permanent marker, write “JC” (Jesus Christ) on the bottom of the inside of one of the cups, and “JI” (Judas Iscariot) on the inside bottom of another. Then fill the cups with the beverage of your choosing, preferably something dark enough to conceal the labels. Shuffle the cups around. Once everyone is gathered, cheers and drink to reveal whose cups were labeled or not.
I’ve made a playlist (linked in our Vol. 18 story highlight) that contains Lady Gaga’s goated bop “Judas” on it three times, along with some other more or less thematically related bangers. Play the playlist on shuffle during your party. Every time “Judas” comes on, everyone in attendance - twelve guests if you went for accuracy - must circle up and perform a “waterfall”, wherein each person starts drinking at the same time but cannot stop until the person before them stops drinking. Whoever’s cup was labeled “JC” is first in the waterfall and whoever’s was labeled “JI” is last. Refill the labeled cups once you finish and repeat whenever “Judas” comes back on.
LINK TO PLAYLIST: https://open.spotify.com/playlist/5TVtlP6ExvGW5udMSvVQYp?si=4e5f9746b9bd42f6
“Paranoia”
Gather in a circle, drinks in hand. Each player takes a turn to whisper a question into the ear of the guest to their right. Please, make it personal and incriminating. Out loud, the guest must answer honestly, without anyone knowing what was asked. Whoever is dying to know what the question was, they must drink before it can be disclosed. I suppose this game is in Judas’ Last Supper spirit of divulging information. But also, isn’t it just fun to be nosy?
And there are the bones of a swingin’ Last Supper Party! I know the tone of Holy Week is meant to be somber and low, but if Jesus wasn’t too good for a weekday kickback then neither am I. You can look at it as a celebration of his strange, miraculous life, or at the very least an excuse to be with people you love. I’ve gone back and forth about how much of the Bible I believe and how much of it I should just take as allegorical. After all, it was written by people as flawed as I am, and translated by them too. Being a couple years removed from my old faith, I’m not sure what the gospel means to me anymore. But I still like the image of The Last Supper, a lot. And I like who I think Jesus would have been too. I may not have a faith anymore, but the prospect of gathering, of eating good food surrounded by people who make me laugh the loudest, sounds holy to me.

MY MOVIE FAVES
Movie is a play that has a characters, conflict, settings, and ending that caught everyone's attention it can be fiction or non fiction. Reading is happy but watching movies hits different. When the pandemic starts I usually watch something that caught my interest like whatever genre it would be, but watching more with science fiction, fantasy, musical, thrilled, animation, and romance are my interests. Watching movies and series makes me calm and distracted from stress that I'm going through because this is also one of my coping mechanism.
Having this interest feels like escaping from reality. I usually watch something that matched my current mood or whatever I feel like watching. I really enjoy the movies that are unique and fun to watch because they give real chills whenever you watch them and also there are a lot of lessons that you will learn not just in present but also maybe in the future. These are the following examples and some movie suggestions incase you want to watch something of my favorite films that I usually go back and forth.
PITCH PERFECT: Listening to their song covers gives good vibes. When I started watching this film I heard some unfamiliar songs that I'm not into, especially when it is old songs but I really like the flow of the music through my ears. They improve the music with their beautiful acapella voice.
Tumblr media
THE GREATEST SHOWMAN: The movie shows a lot of life lessons, be you and don't let other people get into your way, it can be a family, true struggles in life, how you handle your problems, relationship, and even how you communicate with other people, it is also a musical play that you will truly enjoy until the end.
Tumblr media
DESCENDANTS: A film about villain's wanting their children to take the power on the other island and meeting with the known Prince & Princesses. Talks about people change, some in a bad way and some in a good way depending to their life experiences but "No Matter You Hate Someone, You will Always Choose Love Instead Of Hatred".
Tumblr media
DIVERGENT: An action movie that people is divided into 4 boundaries. AMITY (peaceful), ABNIGATION (selfless), CANDOR (honest), ERUDITE (intelligent), and lastly the DAUNTLESS ( brave). you will test yourself wherever you belong but you are different if you're DIVERGENT. life lessons of people that you should trust.
Tumblr media
HARRY POTTER: A very pleasing and deep story that you will need to finish all 8 films for you to understand the fictional series. Talks about their friendship that last longer even they suffer so much and even sacrifice for their loved ones. And even got confused who's your real ally.
Tumblr media
OZ (THE GREAT AND POWERFUL): A fantasy film tells that do not be rude to the people that you're socializing with or else you're gonna face a world that will teach you a life lessons and to be a better person.
Tumblr media
STRANGER THINGS: The upside down, that's what they call the other world of creepy and spooky unbelievable place. Mike, Dustin, Will, and Lucas are playing and suddenly Will disappeared out of nowhere. How did they find will and what happens if psychology and geography aligned.
Tumblr media
TWILIGHT: About the love of a vampire and a mortal that has a past with a werewolf. Adopting a life of an immortal is difficult compared having your partner's parents blessing. Handling a problem with each other's company is a big deal it has a strong connection in every relationships.

Dimensions Beyond Our Universe
“He’s out there, you see? We brought someone back from a fictional reality and he’s loose here. There were three fictionauts in the vessel. Before the lights went out, we saw that he’d killed two and violated about five different laws of physics doing it.”
Tumblr media
The various dimensions, be they pocket, planetary or full Universes, that lay adjacent to this Universe, and are apart of it as much as any planetary body is. They differ from Alternate Realities in that changes there remain constant in relation to our universe. They are divided into three types: Fairy Realms, Heavenly Dimensions and Hell Dimensions. Between all three is a state called Mu-Phase, which was a Parallel Reality co-existing with this Reality. Many Alternate Time lines find themselves relegated to Mu-Phase when they are destroyed or removed from the main Time line (as fluid as time can be in this Universe).
Surrounding all of these dimensions, like space surrounding Planets, is the place known as the Negative Zone/N-Zone/Phantom Zone.  This encasement surrounds every Dimensional Universe and keeps each Universe Separate in the greater Multiverse, which itself is encased in a place called the Void or the Howling by the Timelords. From the outside, each Dimension resembles a planet, and each Universe resembles Earth from the Exterior (because, for many of them, Earth is their "center"). The true number of Universes seems incalculable at the present.
Below are some sample dimensions, or name-checked Dimensions commonly reached in this Universe.
Fairy Realms  Wonderland
Geography: The geography of Wonderland has no rhyme or reason to it. Snow-capped mountains valley into tropical beaches, but most of the area resembled England—albeit warmer and sunnier. Native Life Forms: Wonderland is inhabited mostly by Fairy organisms, and thus, most anything encountered might be intelligent, be it a rabbit or a doorknob. Many potent magical beings traverse, as well as anthropomorphized entities (Cards, animals, etc). Magic Alterations: Because of the high magic of the land, spell-casting rolls have a +3 bonus when cast in Wonderland.
Neverland (sometimes called “the Never-Never”) Geography: An island floating amongst the clouds, water never runs off this mountainous, Caribbean-like island. However, the height provides an unnatural variety of environments. Native Life Forms: The humans and animals are relatively normal, though there are fairies (who tend to have origins deep in the island’s jungles), Mermaids (Deep Ones, though ones more akin to the classical myths of Merfolk, they still worship Cthulhu, but are just nicer about it) and a Giant Crocodile with a clock in its guts eternally ticking. Other life forms might be added based on the dreams of the children brought around it (thus changing the makeup of Neverland). “Red Indians”, “Pirates” and the Lost Boys make up the human groups on Neverland. Magic Alterations: Humans who enter Neverland cease to age, and often revert to childish mentalities (think of the Band Candy). Imagination is quite powerful here, and simple Willpower rolls can manifest food, water, or create Plot-twist-like effects. Magic gains a +3 bonus to casting. Without heavy magical assistance, adults cannot enter or even detect Neverland. Avalon Geography: A Semi-tropical island with other features resembling an English springtime. There is a volcano on the island as well as deep mountains. Native Life Forms: Home to the Selie Court, as well as a colony of Gargoyles. Recently, various rare Ecuadorian plants have been planted there. Magic Alterations: Magic Practitioners gain a +3 roll, but may tap the land directly in a similar manner to those with sorcery sacrificing life points to bonus cast—but at double the effectiveness.
Oz/The Outer Zone Geography: Like many fairy realms, it is a strange mix of terrains—forests and cities being the most common. But don’t consider it like the Judy Garland world, think more Sci-Fi’s Tin Man. It is currently ruled by a reincarnation of one of the four directional Witches who once vied for power over a hundred years ago. Geological bizarreness includes the “Deadily Desert” which, on contact, drains 1 con per second until it reduces the person touching it to Sand. Native Life Forms: A Strange combination of magic and high technology leads to magical cyborgs, wind up robots and other such things mixing with rock-monsters, witches and fairies. Magic Alterations: Magic in the Outer Zone gains a +2 bonus casting.
The Dreamlands
Geography: Extremeply complex and covering multiple planetary bodies. Underground mazes, the Plateau of Leng, Moon Castles and other such wonders exist here. Native Life Forms: Many strange fairy creatures and lovecraftian horrors make residence in the Dreamlands. It is generally considered the most Hellish of the Fairy Realms, even more hellish than the abode of the Unselie Court: Arctis Tor (which is the Forzen Wasteland version of Avalon). Magic Alterations: Magic gains a +1 Bonus to casting for those in the Dreamlands. Some spells can only be cast in the Dreamlands (-2 modifier to Power Level). The Dreamlands are connected to The Wired, which is a dimension that has too much detail in it to be easily summarized here.
Heavenly Dimensions  Narnia
Geography: Generally earth like, but distinctly Europe-like before the Rapture took it. Native Life Forms: The standards from classical mythology as well as humans. Magic: This dimension has been completely consumed by the YHWH, locking the inhabitants into the god’s mental link or its stomach. Its Avatar in this world resembles a majestic Lion. Otherwise, the magic resembles that of Earth. Humans who enter here do not age (and time passes much faster in this dimension than it does on Earth).
The Blazing World Geography: The Blazing World is a great metropolis of magic and dreams. Native Life Forms: None. As a heavenly dimension, beings enter it, and the variety that find themselves there is simply staggering. Magic: Magic gains a +5 bonus to casting, and those who enter cease to age.
“Bliss” World Geography: None, it is a void. This is a heavenly dimension where those who have served the powers have their souls plugged into a magical device that induces a constant state of euphoria as a reward for services rendered. It is the heaven Buffy was removed from. They are reassured constantly that they have done the right thing and that everything will now be all right. This is a horrible, horrible lie and the inhabitants are essentially being doped up. Native Life Forms: None, all are occupants from other realms. Magic: No changes.
El Paradiso Geography: Outer Space populated with planets. However, it is a medieval conception of the universe, with a geocentric system. The closer things are to "God", the faster things move. Native Life Forms: Various species of Angel. Magic: Divine Magic has a +3 for working, while infernal/demonic magic has a -3 to the test.
Hell Dimensions
The Inferno
Geography: A massive pit of concentric rings which seem to expand more and more with time. Native Life Forms: This is hell.  The Hell many Christians fear they will go to, and some do. This is where the Damned Souls and many demons go to.  As well as giants and other monsters waiting to be unleashed for an apocalypse. Magic: Magic that causes pain and damage has a +3 bonus to the casting, while healing and buffing have a -3 to the casting.
The Vampire Dimension
Geography: Similar to earth, and seems to have once been earth where the world is wrecked and ruined from approximately the 1900s or so. Native Life Forms: The world is overrun with super strong and tough humanoid carnivores colloquially referred to as Vampires.  They are not supernatural, just different biological beings that happen to be cunning and ravenous for earth’s life. Magic: No Changes.
Discovered by accident by Nicola Tesla in 1927, it appears as post-apocalyptic earth overrun with the monsters dubbed ‘vampires.’   Tesla survived the discovery and hid the work as best he could, but in the 1990s, the US Army managed to re-create one of Tesla’s portals and got the vampire’s attention. Now, they know where a whole big supply of ‘food’ is…
Alternate Realities
Tumblr media
Far Different from neighboring dimensions, Alternate Realities are a magnitude removed from this (and other) Universes. These include Universes that contain only one fictional series, strange twists on fictional series, some are even copied and invaded by Reality Parasites that drain and deform their copies into unrecognizable drek. Some are called "What If's" and "Imaginary Stories" by their neighboring Realities. Others are completely Unrelated Universe, but each one seems to have what is called a "Mirror Reality" where things are a dark parody or twisting of what occurred in a "main" Reality. Some Realities have several Mirrors--and many Mirror Reality Inhabitants have Goatees for some reason.
All Realities were touched in one manner or another by The Crisis event at various points in their history.  Though temporally, the Crisis has happened, will happen, and is happening right now, the conclusion is thus already known (as reality still exists). Some 'events' are claimed to be followups to the Crisis, but they are simply echoes of it. Why this is and who did it is unknown. Those who probe deep into the event usually go mad, mumbling things about Drills and cheering for a man named Barry Allen (the second Flash, who disappeared in the late 70s) to keep running.
Those who send astral forms to investigate, but come back sane, are said to have been blown back by a mighty battle cry. Another thing that often rings in their heads is believed to be the voice of Barry Allen, saying this:
Everything that's ever mattered to me... everything that's ever been important... ...the lives of everyone on Earth and throughout our universe... ...in the present, and in the future... ... that's what I'm fighting for now!...Time to save the world!....Time...back in time...do what you HAVE to...we must save the world...we must save the world...
Only one record from the end of the Crisis is known, apparently from the Final Battle. Some recognize some of the many voices yelling in the short audio clip that exists. Roughly transcribed from alien dialects, this is what the clip says:
Whether our adversaries be Space, Time, or Alternate Realities-- They mean nothing to us. We will pierce through and go down the path we've chosen for ourselves. Not accepting things as they are is what it means to be a hero! ... Even if we were to be enslaved in the Multiverse's cycles of Death and Rebirth, The feelings we leave behind will guide a new way! Even if the Infinite Universes were to go against us, Our burning blood would cut through fate! We will break through the realities and dimensions And defy all who would stop us to forge our own paths!
Tumblr media
JUST WHO THE HELL DO YOU THINK WE ARE!?
Alternate Universe Threats
Mirror Universe
Geography: It’s exactly like the normal crossover universe, with similar events, but good and evil are flipped. Things play out ‘roughly’ the same historically, but the moralities are flipped. Native Life Forms: As our reality Magic: As our reality
The Terminated Timeline
Geography: This world is like the normal crossover universe, but it was the victim of an AI apocalypse.  Time Travel nullified this timeline’s existence, but it keeps trying to re-attach itself to the main timeline and become the set future. Native Life Forms: Terminators, Sentinels, and other killer robots. Magic: No Changes.
Tindalos
Geography: The Crossover Universe occurs in Curved Space, the beings of Tindalos come from angled space. The Tindalos come from a reality where space is angled.  They come here to balance the curves and make our space like their space.  Time Travel incidents allow the Tindalos to come in to curved space unless precautions are taken. Native Life Forms:  The Hounds of Tindalos and other Tindalosians. Magic: All spells cast in Tindalosian space round up to the nearest odd number of success levels. The Anti-Matter Universe
Geography: A barren wasteland with technological and magical marvels strewn about. Native Life Forms: The Anti-Monitor was, is, and will reside in this plane along with his Heartless/Anti-Matter Demons. They seek the destruction of all matter in the multiverse. Magic: With so much free energy around, magic has a +3 to the casting.

Triple-Combed Burgonet
Title: Burgonet Armorer: Replacement cheek-pieces made by Leonard Heinrich (American (born Germany) Munich 1900–1966 Clarksville, New Jersey) , in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Armor Workshop Armorer: Replacement cheek-pieced made in The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Armor Workshop Date: ca. 1540–50; cheekpieces replaced, 1932 Geography: Augsburg Culture: German, Augsburg Medium: Steel, leather Dimensions: H. 11 7/8 in. (30.2 cm); W. 8 1/8 in. (20.6 cm); D. 12 in. (30.5 cm); Wt. 4 lb. 15 oz. (2251 g) Classification: Helmets
This burgonet belongs to a series of virtually identical examples having three raised and engrailed combs that were worn by the guards attached to a noble German or Austrian house. Several helmets bear the mark of Augsburg and that of Desiderius Helmschmid (1513–1579), the city's leading armorer in this period (this particular helmet is unmarked). Pairs of holes in the bowl suggest that the surface was covered with fabric, stitched in place, leaving only the tall combs exposed. The forging of a helmet bowl with three tall combs from a single plate of steel required considerable skill; the challenge was also met by Italian armorers, who created triple-combed burgonets for the Farnese guard (see acc. no. 04.3.219). (The cheekpieces are modern replacements made by the Museum's armorer Leonard Heinrich in 1932.)

Treeless Plain (1983) Born Sandy Devotional (1986) In the Pines (1986) Calenture (1987) The Black Swan (1989) The Triffids
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The Triffids were the kind of band for whom, in retrospect, obscene cult appreciation seemed inevitable, even deliberate. David McComb’s monstrously passionate, unapologetically sincere, often very weird lyrics atop, the band’s songs blended country, folk, jangle and strings into a hyper-melodic, immensely scaled and fabulously well-crafted brand of post-punk. All that was likely further made distinct by geography: as many have noted before me, The Triffids’ hometown of Perth isn’t just isolated because it’s in Australia, it’s isolated even within Oz. For me, Perth doesn’t leave so much desolation, solitude or aridity in these tunes; it instead contributes to their outlook. Without feeling need to obey other post-punk trends in ‘coolness’ or ‘restraint’, the band could instead be as earnest and strange, as belting and untethered as they damn pleased.
Pick(s): ‘Place in the Sun’, ‘Lonely Stretch’, ‘Suntrapper’, ‘Blinder By the Hour’, ‘Falling Over You’
