Ooh, interesting! I’m guessing this is distinct from bingqiu, since I already tackled that one. I assume it uses non-transmigration shen yuan? So I can tell you that the biggest downside is that I’ve put very minimal thought into this ship before now, but let’s see what we get!

Downsides:

My lack of interest in this ship is... a lot drive by the fact that I’m rarely looking for an opportunity to have less fantasy in my stories, and most bingyuan I’ve seen takes place in a modern setting :X

It’s not a dealbreaker, and like, for example Iove the yi city coffee shop au, but fantasy-story-with-less-fantasy is almost never something I will seek out, it’s something I have to be persuaded into trying. I do love the silly, questionably-constructed universe of PIDW, especially with the conceit that it was constructed by Shang Qinghua, which I can identify with as an author who is sometimes forced into worldbuilding. The modern world? I live there, I don’t dislike it, but it’s a very familiar environment, while ancient fantasy china is very novel to me.

And honestly, I get much less invested in binghe and shen qingqiu/shen yuan without that ‘oh boy, my teacher who i want to please more than anything stopped hating me and started loving me instead.’ Binghe’s damage and the way that his damage affects the way he interacts with the people in my life is one of my favorite, FAVORITE parts of svsss, and dropping a shen yuan into his life after those formative childhood years... it’s just not going to have the same OOMPH as the canon body stealing situation.

Upsides:

Now, you can get some really fascinating aus working with this situation, ones that had plain never occurred to me until someone presented it as a bingyuan scenario. Portal fantasies for binghe to show up in the modern world are fine, but don’t grip me as much of some of the more inventive ones. Two specific fics that pop out off the top of my head are feynite’s homemaker au one-shot (binghe exists in the modern world.... as well as his extended demon family, which interferes with his desire to be a nice quiet house husband), and pandaflower’s great and terrible oz series (binghe has been ruling the world for a very time, and is not terribly.... balanced, then shen yuan is born into the world, and binghe thinks he recognizes his old shizun reincarnated)

Those are both wild! I never would have thought of them myself, because honestly, aus are not typically my forte, but they are delicious. WIth the feynite one-shot, you get a bingyuan dynamic with a very bingmei flavor to it, and in the pandaflower series, binghe is very bingge, and it’s delicious and tense. Not having shen yuan as a fish out of water trying to integrate himself into a new place does take away some things that I like a lot about the original canon, but it introduces some really lovely new character dynamics to play with, and gives you a lot of room to explore.

And... oh........

Anon, I may have accidentally lied to you.

‘I’ve put very minimal thought into this ship’, I type, as I alt+tab over to my writing window, where I returned to working on (one of) my bingyuan wip(s) this morning.

Okay, yeah, I’ve got... 3.5 bingyuan aus (in one of them it’s not a good situation, but his original marriage was with a bingge, which went..... badly). Now, most of these are aus-of-aus situations, and explaining them is probably more words than I want to put into this ask meme, but like..... ‘I’ve put very minimal thought into this ship’ jfc

My main priority in these is that I love shen jiu, deeply, despite his many, many flaws, and his death breaks my heart. First au! Qijiu is a thing, Shen Yuan shows up mysteriously, lost and sick, dressed in modern clothing, and looking very much like Xiao Jiu as a child. He’s adopted into their family despite Strong protests from Shen Jiu, and then Shen Jiu gets attached. Second au! Binghe (bingge lite) is working on building his harem, and one of his new husbands is a certain Sha Yuan, who transmigrated into Sha Hualing’s younger brother at a very young age and basically (re)grew up in the PIDW world. 2.5th au! Binghe (true bingge) married Sha Yuan, things were.... Not Good, and anyways, Bingge died(?), the harem fell apart, and now Sha Yuan is kind of on the run with Mobei-jun and..... Xue Yang. I swear it makes sense, but what if i... don’t explain.

And, final au, what if Liu Mingyan and Liu Qingge were swapped, and she grows up to be the Bai Zhan Peak Lord and Shen Jiu copes less badly with her than her brother because [men] are a lowkey trigger for him, doesn’t spitefully recruit Luo Binghe to Qing Jing Peak, and little Liu Qingge drags Luo Binghe off to go train with his sister. Then........ also Shen Yuan as Shen Qingqiu’s little mini-me protege. All of these are technically bingliuyuan aus (except the 2.5th one) because I love Liu Qingge and can’t stand to see him sad or heartbroken, but yes, apparently I have spent a lot of time thinking about bingyuan and love it very much :V

I have zero problems shipping the same character with more than one person. I’m a ship whore. For instance, I’m usually very drawn to Reverse Harems, stories in which many men are in love with a single woman.

Final RWBY Shipping

Because I’m not going to watch any more seasons. Season Six really dropped the ball. One of the biggest things Season Six added was banality. They added backstory to Salem, finally explaining the overall plot, and then what? They had Oz the Great and Powerful hide when he was needed the most, as anyone in the audience can tell you, this is obviously leading up to the greatest battle between good and evil. This is a typical story telling trope, withholding the big good, to let the heroes show how good they are, but it’s done incredibly poorly.

They hooked up Yang and Blake in the most milquetoast SJW fanfiction way. How bad was it?, they fought Blake’s evil ex-boyfriend and then held hands, while the relationship with every other character was completely ignored. They acted as if Yang was the one and only person who would come to Blake’s aid. No, they all would; RWBY established this over the entire rest of the series. RWY and JNPR would probably have done this early season 1. They also made all of the male characters completely useless. RWBY was always a show that didn’t need to make the male characters worse to make the female characters better. Until Season Six, the female characters were always good enough to stand on their own.

Enough of a rant.

Jaune x RWBY, because nothing says love like sharing, or something. After the girls finally reunited in Season Five, I would not want to do ANYTHING to pull them apart. I say this knowing full well that Jaune’s would not be the center of their attention. They all love each other. And they all care about, respect, and are torn up by Pyrrha’s heroic sacrifice. Hell, Jaune coming across Pyrrha’s statue could have been done so much better...

This said, Jaune x pretty much any of the women in the story works, (note: Only applies to Nora if Lie Ren is confirmed as a gay boy).

Yang x Blake: Aside from a JRWBY harem, this was the one I was most interested in, and they... did nothing with it. Where’s Blake calming Yang’s rage? Where is Yang’s cries of passion? They could certainly have done a Beauty and the Beast romance between the two, and it would have been awesome, but noooooo, asshole fans kept having egg the developers on to give us one of the most banal, underwhelming romances I have seen in shows I like. The only time in the story that Yang doesn’t seem sexual is when she’s in a romance.

Ruby x Weiss: This seemed to be getting more adorable with every season, until season six banality kicked in. I mean, they have to have Ruby spend 5min to figure out how to use her eye powers over the entire season, they didn’t have time for any sort of character development or even fluff.

Roman Torchwick x Neopolitan. I never really cared for Roman either way, until I saw him interacting with RWBY. Too bad he’s gone now, and Neo can only be saved by Jaune’s penis.

Qrow x Glenda. Everyone and their dog insist on shipping Qrow with Winter, because fighting means they love each other!, or some bullshit. Glenda is the one who forgives Qrow for his (many) flaws. Most people’s default for Glenda seems to be Oz, but, let’s face it, she tried, but moved on. Oz is too hung up on Salem.

Oz x Salem. Only two things can save Salem, Oz, or Jaune’s penis. Since Oz is in hiding, I’m going with the latter.

Sun x Blake x Kali. Never had a problem with Blacksun, but it was always second fiddle to Knightshade, until Kali adorably spent her time trying to get them together.

I had an idea for a Oz x Harem fic. It starts off as a Oz x Miranda fic, but they find a legal loophole to let them get married. If the person marrying into the royal family has a substantial enough harem, then that means they must be good enough to be a part of the family. Oz realizes dumb harem anime logic when he sees it, and Miranda is completely willing to let him find others to add to his harem. In fact, she seems strangely excited about it.

It’s going to be half serious half parody of the harem genre. I’m thinking it’ll involve Polly, Vera, Aaravi, and possibly Joy

Bookshelf Briefs 6/12/17

Anne Happy, Vol. 5 | By Cotoji | Yen Press – There’s a new character introduced in this volume who I thought at first was going to be an antagonist but it turns out is merely another one of our broken, unlucky heroes. That said, “terminally shy” is not really unlucky so much as a basic personality flaw. As for the class, we’re looking beyond graduation, and while I will marvel if some of these ditzes manage to survive in the adult world, it’s a good thinking exercise to get them to ponder dreams they’d like to achieve—Botan as a school nurse is amusing and obvious, Hibari’s “botanical research technician” a bit less so. As for the culture festival, they’re doing a play, probably to continue trying to force them to interact with others till they can do it more naturally. Mildly recommended. – Sean Gaffney

Captive Hearts of Oz, Vol. 2 | By Ryo Maruya and Mamenosuke Fujimaru | Seven Seas – As I noted in my review of the first volume, folks did not particularly read Alice in the Country of Hearts for the reverse harem—or if they did, the worst volumes of it were only concerned with that. No, they read it for the dark subtext, and I am pleased that Captive Hearts of Oz is well aware of that and turns the dark subtext into text. There are some sweet, heartwarming moments, don’t get me wrong, such as Leon finding his courage and Nick’s daring rescue of Hayward. But there’s also chilling stuff here, as one of the crows we met earlier is vanished into black mist, and after seemingly being killed in the rapids, Nick just… comes back wrong. I am fully down with this series now. – Sean Gaffney

Fairy Tail: Rhodonite | By Kyouta Shibano | Kodansha Comics – This says volume two on it, but it’s actually a single volume spinoff—volume one was Twin Dragons of Sabertooth. This second volume deals with Gajeel and his past, and as such has a lot of cool fights, disturbing revelations and shonen stubbornness. But of course I didn’t get it for that reason. I got it because Gajeel x Levy 5-evah. And I am pleased to note that fans of this pairing will have a lot to work with, from Levy’s realization that she’s never really asked much about Gajeel’s past, to Juvia’s straight-up shipping of the two of them (who can blame her), to Gajeel’s pure and honest respect for Levy. They’ve come a long way from his beating her to unconsciousness and crucifying her. Recommended for Gajevy fans. – Sean Gaffney

Food Wars!: Shokugeki no Soma, Vol. 18 | Story by Yuto Tsukuda, Art by Shun Saeki | VIZ Media – I was hesitant going into this volume since the beginning of the “Erina’s horrible dad takes over” arc was rather distressing. It isn’t over yet, and several research societies get squashed in the shokugeki they requested to challenge the order to disband. Still, Yukihira does prevail in his rigged showdown with the fate of Polaris dormitory on the line, so there’s some hope. Too, we learn that Azami at one point idolized Yukihira’s dad and is now doing all of this because the “rotten and corrupt” culinary world “dared to ruin” him. Oh, and Erina now knows that the person she looks up to more than anyone is Yukihira’s dad, causing her to reflect on all the times she’s treated him shabbily. Probably my favorite part of this volume is seeing her among the Polaris gang; I hope she loosens up a bit more under their influence. – Michelle Smith

Haikyu!!, Vol. 12 | By Haruchi Furudate | VIZ Media – Ah, what a tremendously satisfying volume! With little preamble, the first game of the Spring Tournament preliminaries begins. Everyone is much more confident now after spending so much time practicing against strong Tokyo teams, and Karasuno makes it through its two exciting games, earning a spot in the qualifier round. Essentially, this volume offers both in-game awesomeness as well as training montages, as the two months between tournaments pass quickly, with various guys making improvements, Hinata and Kageyama’s new quick set upping its success rate, and even Tsukishima asking for tips on how to effectively block a superior player. It’s also great to see Hinata getting respect on a wider stage. Sounds like volume twelve will be a great one, too! – Michelle Smith

Murcielago, Vol. 2 | By Yoshimurakana | Yen Press – Hinako is on the cover of this volume, and she does get a chapter of focus to herself, which mostly serves to make us wonder if she’s meant to be sixteen years old or six. It’s also unclear exactly what her relationship with Kuroko is beyond ‘buddy with car.’ Kuroko certainly seems like she can handle things herself, finishing up the murder mansion subplot with a few more corpses and a lot more gore—though less than I expected, as the murderous maid loses a few limbs but not her life—something it’s hinted she may regret. We also begin a new arc, trying to rescue a girl from her father, who may be a serial killer. If you like lots of over the top violence and lesbian sex, Murcielago STILL may not be for you—it’s pretty twisted. – Sean Gaffney

Please Tell Me! Galko-chan, Vol. 3 | By Kenya Suzuki| Seven Seas – As with the second volume, this one ramps back on the sex talk, though there is still some as we discuss pubic hair and the benefits and drawbacks to large breasts. Mostly what we get is more character-based gags, as Galko and company go video shopping, visit an art museum, and have a school festival, which brings about the majority of the drama in the latter half of the volume—Galko is excellent at reading aloud, so is drafted as narrator of the school play. But this means she can’t do the festival with Otako and Ojou! Fortunately, she has a childhood friend who, while he’s attracted to her, also understands her needs, and the problem is solved to a degree. A lot of fun. – Sean Gaffney

Rose Guns Days Season Two, Vol. 3 | By Ryukishi07 and Nana Natsunishi | Yen Press – This ended up being a lot more idealistic than I was expecting, even if there was a bit of manufactured drama when Zel’s real identity is revealed. The chase is on to try to rescue her father and also help Rose not surrender to the Chinese—something Lee is happy to help with provided he can consolidate his power base. Also, turns out a few of the cast from Season One are not quite as killed off as they appeared. The whole season is set up like a heist film, and a heist is what you get in the end. If there’s a problem, it’s that it all goes far TOO smoothly—you get the sense that even more was cut from the visual novel to squeeze this one. On to season three, which is in 1949. – Sean Gaffney
